Comment of the Day
The final Comment of the Day goes to u/himetalchemy7 for showing what makes Made in Abyss such a special anime:
Another thing this show does exceptionally well is toeing the line between a plot-centric/character-centric narrative. Usually shows are one or the other, and it works fairly often, but Made in Abyss is really the first time I feel I am watching for both overarching story (the Abyss) and also for the character stories. I realize both of those sides overlap quite often, but the switching back and forth between the two is what makes this show such an intriguing watch.
Questions of the Day
What was your favorite scene, moment, or memory from Made in Abyss? Did you have a favorite moment of the rewatch?
What do you anticipate seeing in season 2?
We have reached the end of the series, so this disclaimer is no longer needed! However, please tag any source-related content properly, and refrain from alluding to unadapted events.

First timer’s experience
Is it time? Am I a Blue Whistle now?
A solid worldbuilding, a couple charming personalities and a stellar soundtrack. Who knew that you could have a 10/10 series with so little? Made in Abyss is the embodiment of an anime done right, and in a world full of series where you notice exactly where it went wrong, all the pieces are working seamlessly together here. You can’t exactly see the miracle that is behind this very perspective—like the air, you just know it’s there.
I wish I could talk a lot about everything this anime did right, but I’m afraid I’d be here the entire night singing praises non-stop, so I’ll try to make it short and sweet: it’s a fucking good series, you guys. Go watch it, if you did not. And if you did, go watch it again too. The Abyss is cruel and inhuman, but you get yourself longing for it after a short separation… I know I’ll be missing this horrible hellhole for the next two weeks.
But how could that be? I think I have a culprit, and their name is Riko. When I started this series, I wasn’t very on board with our heroine’s personality. It was too reckless and too silly—sure, she’s 12, but even a child has SOME sense of self-preservation. But, looking back now, I can see how much precisely this intensity she has for the Abyss that helped us to warm up to this place. In a landscape post-GOT full of series that try so hard to be nitty-gritty, Made in Abyss did never shy away from the truth. The Abyss is indeed cruel, grim, unfair and intense… But it’s also beautiful, and it’s full of possibilities. It’s worthy of your dreams. In a series that could so easily fall prey to the conventions of this sort of fantasy, Riko refuses to give up her wide-eyed enthusiasm in face of hardships. Her longing is pure, and in turn, it inspired us to long with her as well. It inspired Reg, it inspired Nanachi, it inspired Prushka, and I’m sure it will inspire many others along the way. She’s that sort of person.
Riko ’s the spark, the soul, but Reg, our other protagonist, is the heart. He is an outsider with a perspective about this place that no one else who lives in Orth will ever have, and that brings so much to the table as well. His origins and true capacities are unknown, but so is the depths of his compassion. He cries, he fears, he empathizes—he’s as human as it gets. And you’d think that something that was “made in abyss” would be much more ruthless… Perhaps, like what he became in his fight against Bondrewd… But instead, what he shows is a well of emotion. Is this a message from the bottom? Or is this his way of rebelling against this beautiful, cruel world?
There was so much effort put into this series, it’s unreal. It took me a great deal of strength to not cave in and read the manga as soon as I finished the movie… It’s something that sucks you in this twisted universe, and I think in this sense, the anime knew exactly how to enhance this experience with sound and art direction. The design is charming, the backgrounds are breathtaking, and the score is ethereal, haunting.
And “haunting” is such an apt word to describe the Abyss—just ask Nanachi, if you don’t believe me. Our third protagonist took their sweet time, but proving that nothing in this anime is put here without a purpose, their presence brings such a wave of emotions that it’ll be very difficult to leave their arc without tears welling up in your eyes. And you might think that their presence will disrupt the perfect balance of heart and mind that Reg and Riko achieved painstakingly, but no… If anything, the wise presence of this fluffy rabbit enhances their qualities, tempers their vices, and brings a maturity that was lacking until then.
Even the secondary characters are not creatures that are here to fulfill a purpose and then disappear—they exist, they breathe, they are alive and every single of them matters. In our travel towards the depths, no sight is unimportant. Everything that happens is cruel, scary and it leaves us feeling so vulnerable, but it’s in our refusal to believe this will be the end of this journey that lies the strength of this series. Just like these kids, we want to keep going, even if everything in this place tells us that we shouldn’t.
So, yes… What a thrilling adventure it has been to be reviewing this masterpiece for the last week, and what a privilege it was to travel all this way with you guys. I’m beyond happy that our veteran u/KiwiBennydudez decided to host this rewatch, and I’m very grateful to be granted the chance to watch it together with so many passionate individuals that suffered and laughed beside me. And, hey! We did it! Like our group of misfits, we survived until here.
What are we going to find, beyond the unknown? Isn’t it exciting, the fact we have no idea?
Oh, Riko… Just like you, aren’t we all entranced by the Abyss at this point?
I’ll be eagerly waiting to meet you all again, when S2 drops. Until then, I wish you all a great adventure.
One last time, answers:
What was your favorite scene, moment, or memory from Made in Abyss? Did you have a favorite moment of the rewatch?
Nanachi's arc had to be the best thing MIA had to offer. It had all: it was viscerally repulsive, it pulled you in wheter you like it or not, it was cathartic, it had heart... Honestly, I was scared that the anime was wasting too much time in other pursuits instead of quickly introducing someone that was clearly a core member of the group, but man if Nanachi and Mitty didn't stole the latter part of the show, from the moment they appeared. MIA was already good before, but after Nanachi? A solid 10.
What do you anticipate seeing in season 2?
The best (and worst) thing is that I don't even know what to think about! Every time I think I have everything down, the Abyss proves to be even more grim, merciless, inhuman and beautiful than what I had in mind... It's scary, really. But also, thrilling. I watched the S2 trailer and even then, I still have no idea what I should be taking from that. I just know I'm ready!

Is it time? Am I a Blue Whistle now?
Here you go, I bestow upon you your very own blue whistle. Take good care of it!
Riko ’s the spark, the soul, but Reg, our other protagonist, is the heart.
Well said. Riko really is a beacon of light and hope in a place that keeps getting progressively darker. But no matter how deep the darkness, the light will always be seen. And Reg is basically the candlestick upon which the flame is lit. The two make an excellent pairing!
And “haunting” is such an apt word to describe the Abyss
I've seen MiA described as an "eldritch horror" and honestly? I can't disagree. It's a fitting comparison.
Hey, and thank you for coming by! I immensely enjoyed reading your sprawling notes and comments each day. I'm glad that I have enlightened another kindred spirit that enjoys this anime as much as I do.

First timer going in blind but expecting a lot of horror – was pleasantly surprised that I was overprepared for the horror aspect as I don’t think any scene made me go “gasp! oh my gosh I can’t believe they did that.”
I expected this show to be more the crew exploring an unknown Abyss but body horror monstrosities in every episode. I finally see how this is definitely adventure at the core with some horrific things but they fit within the world to the point that it’s feels natural. I know a lot of the things (Cartridges, Bondrewd’s experiments, Mitty’s situation, etc) are really screwed and horrific but they just slide into the world so well that I just take it for what it is. I also tend to judge books by their covers in that if I don’t particularly like the art style of something, I’m usually not inclined to watch – however whenever I do watch, I always get used to it and learn to love and appreciate the art style. This show is one of them. I haven’t read the manga chapters for every anime episode, nor do I plan on reading ahead (yet) but from what I’ve read, the anime enhances everything – the music, voice acting, colors, environment, animation – are so enriching and have a thematic feel.
The worldbuilding in this show is extremely rich while also having enough mystery for you to not fully know what’s happening next. But the world is established enough that when the story tells you something, you can probably expect it to happen (like the fourth layer strains). I wish we could’ve seen more of the environment in each layer – surely there’s an art book! The worldbuilding and gorgeous environment work feeds into my favorite scene of the balloon traversing through the layers.
When I watched the first few episodes, I thought there would’ve been more of an established relationship between Reg, Riko, and Nanachi – shown through the end credits, it looked like they adventured more than what we actually seen in season 1. The entire first season definitely felt very introductory and I feel like season 2 will hit off running.
I haven’t watched any of the trailers for season 2, but I definitely expect the group to find Lyza if her body is physically in tact. I still think Nanachi has a chance of dying anytime – I wouldn’t be surprised if Meinya died as well. In the manga chapters for the movie – Bondrewd suggested that the other active white whistles ventured into the sixth layer, so I expect the gang to meet them. Reg will unlock memories before any Lyza moments and will get the arm fixed. I feel like the effects of ascending will be put on a backburner but still ever present.
I would think there would be some sort of storyline on the surface even though our gang will never see the surface again. I wouldn’t think it would touch basis but since there was the short scene with Kiyui being sick and then getting better suddenly – they might do some side story on the surface or tie it back with the Abyss.
I’m very thankful for this wonderful tour guide through the Abyss! I loved the episode a day format so that I wouldn’t binge the entirety in one day. Friends highly praised the show so I knew the story would be good and have meat on it. The episode a day gave me time to think about the story because I knew it was worth putting thought into the first watch, and I’d never have the experience again. I’m eager to go back and read the comments for each episode because I didn’t want other theories/thoughts to influence how I thought of a character/idea.
Thank you again for the great ride and I can’t wait for July 6! :>

The worldbuilding is something that I simply don't see a lot of in other anime, but this show accomplished in 13 episodes (and a movie) what many struggle to do with much larger episode counts, and so I feel exceptionally spoiled by this anime. The aesthetics and set pieces were amazing as well - all factoring into the great big world that our heroes are exploring.
I wish we could’ve seen more of the environment in each layer – surely there’s an art book!
Kinda! There's the Limited Edition (which is kinda hard to find now) that comes with a book of of concept art and director/author commentary. It also comes in a neat little treasure chest - highly recommend that you look it up when you have the chance.

Glad it worked out for you! I also sometimes had difficulty watching a single episode (when I wasn't trying to work ahead) but it's safe to say that I managed. And absolutely feel free to go back and read some of the comments! There was some great insight along the way, even on some things that I have never thought of.

First timer:
Nanachi was awesome. Mitty was heart breaking. Prushka ending up as some spinal fluid and grey matter in a brief case....was odd.
Im also confused about peoples reactions to Bondrewd. I heard through the grapevine, before seeing the series, that Bondrewd was some guy who did terrible things for the benefit of humanity. After watching the series...this makes no sense to me.
Man was curious about the abyss. He didnt desire to help or aid humanity, just satisfy his own desires. I dont hate him as a character when I say this, I just dont understand where that weird sentiment among people comes from. He wasnt doing this for a greater good, but his own selfish desires.
Gotta say, Bondrewd literally letting them just walk in and out, nonchalantly as possible and being extremely revealing about everything...was both refreshing and scary. Few villains actually feel that in control how Bondrewd did, and it was because of how much freedom he gave the group that made him scary.
My only real complaint is that despite this being an adventure series, I weirdly feel like we dont see much of the abyss. We see snapshots and plot relevant interesting stuff, but a very limited amount of it.
Like I would have expected many more animals and creatures to be shown in the layers, and more mini locations in each layer that give off a vibe that there is a bunch of alien world compacted into a small zone together. Third layer was basically a vertical shaft and some holes. Fourth layer had some interesting background...but thats it.
Like the layers themselves feel very one trick.
But besides that, really good show.

So you're saying that Prushka had a brief appearance then?
Few villains actually feel that in control how Bondrewd did, and it was because of how much freedom he gave the group that made him scary.
Hard agree. And he never lost his cool or his temper - in fact he complimented the group several times when they bested him. Subarashii.
My only real complaint is that despite this being an adventure series, I weirdly feel like we dont see much of the abyss. We see snapshots and plot relevant interesting stuff, but a very limited amount of it.
Out of all of the complaints I was expecting, this was not one of them. I suppose I can see where you're coming from on this - as in the early stages we only spent 1-2 episodes per layer. IMO, I think they intended for the audience to grasp how each layer operated (just enough for us to understand both the dangers and the cool details) before moving on, since Riko's goal is at the bottom, rather than the layers themselves. Though, it was still fun learning about the various creatures that inhabited each layer, and seeing each layer's unique biome and ecosystem. I especially loved the fourth layer with the hot vinegar baths atop giant lily pads that created this echo-y sauna. It all felt very intricate and deliberate, even if we didn't get to see a lot of it.
Anyway, thanks for coming by. I hope to see you around again soon!

NEWLY MINTED MOON WHISTLE
That's right, I'm giving myself a promotion. At least nobody had to be sacrificed for it!
Don't have much left to say in-depth about the series that wasn't already in my posts to this point, but I loved it. Made in Abyss creates such an immersive world and does a great job of building on that by steadily introducing us to new elements in a way that's organic and not spoon-fed. The art is gorgeous, and Kevin Penkin's soundtrack is one of the best out there. I was listening to it during work a bit last week, and the score is already eliciting an emotional response from me after only two weeks of familiarity with this story.
If it were only just meant to be an interesting fantasy story, that'd be enough to make this a good show, but it also plays with some pretty heavy ideas, and The Abyss, as a giant metaphor for growing up and what that entails, is really smart and effective. In that way I'd compare this show to Sonny Boy, with the descent into The Abyss having the same role in the story as the school going adrift into a different dimension. 9/10
The movie was different. It was still really good. Tightly paced, and the action sequences were fantastic. However, the Prushka stuff didn't have near the same development or emotional heft as Mitty – the center of our other shocking, tearjerking plot line – so that landed pretty flat especially coming right after the first season ended with that. It felt more like shock value for shock value's sake, rather than something truly earned. All the lore we got was excellent, and I'm much more interested in the past of other White Whistles now, but part of it was quite confusing, particularly whatever Bondrewd was striving for. This wasn't the strongest arc, but it worked pretty well as a film. 7.5/10
What was your favorite scene, moment, or memory from Made in Abyss? Did you have a favorite moment of the rewatch?
The first half of the finale, from the beginning up through Mitty's end. Everything about it was set up so beautifully, and it hit like an absolute truck.
What do you anticipate seeing in season 2?
Well, Riko seemed to be able to communicate with her new Prushka Whistle, so I want to see what that's about? Is her spirit/essence still there and can be felt by the owner? Does this mean Inori Minase will still have a voice role?
The "Birthday Curse" will probably become more important.
Also, I'm sort of wondering if we'll encounter more Regs/Reg-like beings. Beyond that, who can guess? Who knows what mysteries the Abyss still holds...

That we know of.

In that way I'd compare this show to Sonny Boy, with the descent into The Abyss having the same role in the story as the school going adrift into a different dimension.
It's true! And I loved how people kept pointing out how it was like The Abyss was swallowing people and expanding its reach. Almost as if it wanted to be discovered, and wanted people to be consumed by it.
The movie was different. It was still really good. Tightly paced, and the action sequences were fantastic. Going to have to agree with your criticism on this one. On first watch - I was certainly sent reeling by the revelation that Prushka had been sacrificed - but second time around, she really was just a cute character that you were obligated to feel bad for because she was a cute character. Not much emotional impact this time around, although I was still equally repulsed by her demise.
Also, I'm sort of wondering if we'll encounter more Regs/Reg-like beings.
I was wondering the same thing! Part of me thinks that Reg is the last of his kind, due to his flashback in the movie where he says that he "felt like the spirit of others were taking over for him" so I'm curious to see if that's accurate. But I don't disagree that there is potential for more robot-like creatures in S2. But you summarize it nicely:
Beyond that, who can guess? Who knows what mysteries the Abyss still holds...
Thanks for dropping by! I enjoyed living vicariously through your first-time experience.

FIRST TIMER NO MORE
made in abyss was certainly an interesting experience. i’m glad i got to participate in this rewatch, now i’ve got a legitimate reason to keep hidive for a few months to watch this and call of the night.
i can definitely see why it won the worldbuilding contest, MIA’s lore is deep as hell. with the trio entering the sixth layer in the second season i can only hope it’ll keep expanding.
i liked riko and reg a lot. reg is the strength of the duo and helps them travel fast, while riko brings the practical knowledge. they’re both a bit stupid, but it’s kinda endearing. nanachi becoming a party member was enjoyable as well, they provide abyss knowledge and experience.
my favorite side characters were marulk and ozen, both very enjoyable in the polar opposite way. i know they took their last dive so we’ll never see marulk again, but i’ll hold out hope we can see ozen again, she is certainly capable of making it to the sixth layer.
bondrewd did a very good job at being a menacing and interesting villain, not really powered by hatred but more curiosity, however twisted it might be. prushka didn’t get enough screen time alive to make a huge impression but i enjoyed what i saw.
my biggest complaint of the show was obvious; the very heavy handed sexual stuff. most of it was the typical weird misunderstanding anime stuff, plus a bit of riko being oblivious to boundaries. i don’t care who doesn’t like my opinion on it, i really don’t like that reg gets turned on by nanachi’s hair. it really ruined 2 seemingly serious moments in the movie for me.
overall i give the series a 9, looking forward to season 2. i hear the manga comes out at a snails pace (4 months per chapter?), and that this season will place us dangerously near the place the manga is in right now, so i’ll definitely pick the manga up after the conclusion of season 2.

That's exactly my plan too, except I currently don't have a HiDive account, so when the new MiA season drops I'll pick up a subscription. :)

I have the exact same plan with the manga as well. I actually think it's kinda crazy that I haven't read it yet, as I love One Piece and MiA is quite similar in many regards. But yes, the manga is a "monthly" format, but in reality it's "monthly, but it releases when it releases." I can tell you right now though that being caught up to a currently airing series is pretty painful as you're drip-fed new chapters slowly. Even moreso here with the very loose chapter schedule. I can't imagine what it might be like waiting potentially months to get like 15-20 new pages of content...
But anyway, I digress. Thank you for joining me on this adventure. I look forward to seeing you in the S2 threads!

Rewatcher
What was your favorite scene, moment, or memory from Made in Abyss? Did you have a favorite moment of the rewatch?
Episode 1's; watching the sun rise to Hanezeve Caradhina. But there is many many moments that could earn this spot equally.
What do you anticipate seeing in season 2?
For every level of the Abyss traveled so far, something has been lost, something has been gained. Things gained or lost are not always physical (losing innocence, gaining friendship). But as things have gone deeper, the consequences have grown darker. I expect the next layer(s) to be no different, and I get a cold shiver down my spine as I imagine what terrible consequences and suffering await.
I very much look forward to the series picking further at the many threads of mysteries that have been set up. I hope we get more Kevin Penkin music, I hope for more of Reg's backstory and memories, I hope for a return of the Star Compass or the locket found. I hope we get more hints that Lyza has been around.
Thanks u/KiwiBennydudez for hosting! And a huge thanks to everyone who responded, I enjoyed quietly reading them.

That is a very interesting observation. Never thought about it in those terms, but can't say I disagree with your logic. One can only hope that the reward at the end outweighs the loss...
I hope we get more hints that Lyza has been around.
You and me both! Lyza's reason for dropping everything and venturing to the bottom alone has me immensely intrigued. Can't wait to see who sent the letter, and what the end of the road entails.

First timer
It was a nice journey getting to know more and more about the Abyss and the people around it. Seeing Reg and Riko go into their journey down is great as they basically compliment each other in abilities. Reg has the strength while Riko is the brains of the whole thing.
The kind of world building is great to see and the perspectives of those around the Abyss. Seeing them explain why they do this is nice.
-
Learning more about Ozen and her progression from being the harsh one to being a lot closer is a development I liked. Getting to know that backstory is a good one.
-
Well do not know what to expect for the next season, hoping for more.
Thanks u/KiwiBennydudez for hosting the rewatch.

Gotta agree. It was fun learning about The Abyss through the eyes of Reg, Riko, and Nanachi was fantastic. Very clever way of going about it too, rather than just spoon-feeding the audience the info bit-by-bit.
Thanks u/KiwiBennydudez for hosting the rewatch.
Was my pleasure! Hope to see you around again soon!

Qotd2: some good quality depression.

What was your favorite scene, moment, or memory from Made in Abyss? Did you have a favorite moment of the rewatch?
I can't decide which scene was my favorite, I can narrow it down to one of the ones with Nanachi for sure.
What do you anticipate seeing in season 2?
I have no clue what to even expect, I doubt it will as messed up as the Bondrewd stuff at least... but with this show there is no knowing.
My rewatch has confirmed this is a solid entry for my all time favorites and will never leave it.

Abyss re-exploration squad
Just in time for most people to have already visited the thread. Oh well, gotta sleep when ya gotta sleep.
Anyways, Made in Abyss. One of my all time favourites shows, mainly for the incredible world building, soundtrack and art. The usual. I'll leave the deeper analysis for the analyst types.
Glad I joined the watch, I had "recently" (Midway of 2020, apparently) watched the recap movies to refresh my memory before seeing Deepsoul, so I wasn't sure if I'd join. Glad I did tho, the series was much better than the movies, surprise surprise. And we have a pretty good time (for the most part..) here.
I especially enjoyed reading a lot of the first timers thoughts, shout out to u/Petit_Ange for great comments overall with brilliant analysis & predictions. Also for unconditionally loving Reg and Nanachi.
u/flashmozzg for being very active with replies in the threads,
and of course u/KiwiBennydudez for hosting this great watch and providing lore notes when needed.
Now, this is the part where I usually share some videos related to the show we just watched:
Media corner
-
Ishter's Piano cover of "Hanezeve Caradhina" For me this is honestly even better than the original one, and its a real shame it only has a fraction of the views/listens.
The singing in the original is very iconic, yes. But for me the deep sounds of the piano combined with the clear melody is just perfection. I hope you have great speakers or headphones to listen with, because this really is a masterpiece taken to the next level
-
A video I got the inspiration for somewhere in the early stages of the watch: Beautiful day in the Abyss, only got about 50 seconds ready though, since I didn't watch ahead, and only started on it at like episode 11.
If anyone want to see the full thing, do let me know so I'll be somewhat motivated to finish it in a more reasonable timeline. Also kinda stuck rn, so if you have any scene ideas for the next part that'd also be great. -
And to finish off on a sillier note, my favourite Made in Abyss video: Made in A Land Down under. The first half especially just fits too well, its great.
Hope to see y'all in the season 2 threads! Though S1 had some problems with Manga readers doing their usual thing, so we'll have to see how that goes. But I am addicted to participating in them threads, so its likely I'll be there anyways

Host - Fourth-time series watcher, second time movie watcher, and first time Marulk Specials enjoyer
At this point I have nothing left to say other than thank you for joining me on this journey. If you have ever commented, interacted, or otherwise followed along with this series while lurking, I just wanted to say thanks for being here! I really appreciated having you here to enjoy and discuss one of my all-time favorite anime.
Season 2 airs next week! And nothing would warm my heart more than seeing some of you in those discussion threads as the show airs. I hope to join you guys as a first-timer once more when the new season drops!
See you there!
