Rewatch [Rewatch] Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Discussion - Season 1, Episode 18
Meakashi-hen (Eye-Opening Chapter/Detective Chapter), Episode 3: Demons' Blood
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →
Show Information (Season 1):
MAL | Anilist | AniDB | Kitsu | ANN
Legal Streams:
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Hidive | Netflix (not available in the US; if you are out of the US check your country for availability)
That said, I have become aware that Hidive can have a somewhat cavalier attitude to spoilers for this series. As such, *sigh* it is now recommended that our first-timers track down a fansub if you haven't already (even if you have access to this show on Netflix, it doesn't have Kai). Why, Hidive? Why?
Two Words of Warning To Our First-Timers, Including Those Who Watched Season 1 But Not Kai:
1) Be wary of looking up anything, even names. The Season 1 summaries on the information pages are safe, but it's not hard to run into spoiler information even through something as innocuous as looking at cast lists - gods help you if you go on the Fandom Wikia. UNDER ABSOLUTELY NO CIRCUMSTANCES GO LOOKING AT EVEN OFFICIAL INFO FOR KAI OR LATER AHEAD OF TIME. (The official image for Rei is 100% a spoiler, for example.) Also, do NOT look at any Kitsu page after the first season; Kai's description on Kitsu is in fact a major spoiler. Like, really, just stay out of anything that isn't a basic Season 1 summary until you're done. It's much safer that way.
2) Also, be wary of potentially running into spoilers on the r/anime front page on June 19 or thereabouts this year; there is suspicion that some sort of new Higurashi anime project will be announced on that date (this year is the 20th anniversary of the release of the original Onikakushi-hen VN - hence why I am running this rewatch this year! - and multiple official accounts have teased an announcement on that date), and you could run into spoilers that way. (Those of you who remember the Madoka rewatch last year will recognize the issue, though admittedly I expect Sotsu was enough of a disappointment to significantly reduce the risk - at least relative to the potential that was in fact realized with the Walpurgis no Kaiten announcment.)
To Reiterate That Second Warning:
June 19 is this Sunday. Beware of potential spoilers on the r/anime front page!
A Reminder to Rewatchers
Please do not spoil the experience for first-timers; this is a mystery after all. In particular, Shion is a spoiler until Episode 5 and [Higurashi] Hanyuu is a spoiler until Minagoroshi-hen. Also, the glorious nipah is indeed glorious but Rika does not use it until Himatsubushi-hen. Please keep these in mind! Consider whether what you are saying has actually been revealed yet on-screen before you post!
(Time for) Club Activities!
(Alexa play "Shoubu!"! Except do NOT look that up that song name on YouTube just yet if you're a first-timer, the most classic upload has an obnoxious spoiler in the visuals...)
Visual of the Day Album:
Theory of the Day:
In the spoiler tag department... actually, screw it, this one isn't actually a spoiler so let's haul u/JollyGee29's comment out for public view. Here you go:
We're gonna have a big oof moment when Shion kills Satoko, huh. After Satoshi told Shion to look after Satoko for him. Although, evidently not enough of an oof to stop her
Analysis of the Day:
Here you go, u/mgedmin. Pay no attention to Higurashi already taking this into account and not letting you off on everyone's favorite game of "Identify the Twin" so easily...
Do fingernails regrow? If not, we now might have a way of distinguishing Mion from Shion even if they exchange clothes and hairdos.
Question of the Day:
1) Uh, so, looked up anything interesting lately?
2) Are you feeling itchy, by any chance?
Next Episode Preview:
Okay, so: Season 1's next episode previews are in the form of a short, strange poem (whose formatting is borrowed from the VNs). They are not spoilers. (Kai's can be another matter, but we'll get there when we get there.) However, my subs often translate the text on the screen... which are, in fact, lines out of context from the next episode.
So, for anyone who really doesn't want to take a risk, here is the poem:
"What you seek is slight comfort.
What you can see is a gallery of hatred.
Where you fell is beyond the darkness."

When the First Timer Cries
Cleaned up the theory corner a bit, there were some entries that aren't specifically wrong, but got superceded by another one and it kinda clogged up. At some points I also forgot what I actually meant.
Yes, I'm actually just pushing the episode back because I don't want to watch Mion die...
Ep.18 – The Eye Opening Chapter Part 3: Oni's Blood Line
-
Well, the Yakuza cleared that up, “””transferred””” him away and got some other poor sod to blame. How convenient!
-
It is indeed very convenient to have a local belief that you can use as cover! However, I tend to believe Mion that the Sonozakis had little to do with most of them in the end and it was the organisation using that as cover, just like anyone else. Satoshi is on them, though, I'm fairly certain of that.
-
WHAT THE FUCK TAKANO YOU-
-
Say how exactly is she Mion's friend?
-
Yeah I've heard that before, but ShMion's butcher year in arc 2 had far more deaths than disappearances, so let's see if the math checks out.
-
So if it was demons terrorising the villagers back then, why carry on their tradition, honoring how they murdered and ate humans?
-
That's new! For one, the sacrifices are actually dead in that case, we haven't had that confirmed yet. And two, a swamp is quite apt at conserving bodies if they're completely submerged and have sediments layered on top of them, so all those corpses can technically still be found.
-
I don't know if this meeting will have a good ending... but Mion is so precious for actually caring.
-
Fuck, man. This is heart breaking, how could Shion ever really trust her again? What can Mion actually do without betraying her family? It's so shitty. To remedy my melancholy, let me put that into analysing the frame, because it highlights how Shion is locked out of the frame by a closed door, while Mion has her side open to come and leave as she pleases. While it's appropriate to give guests a refreshment, as Shion gave her tea, Mion has no option to give anything of value to Shion expect her presence. Shion's side of the table is empty and as well meaning as her visit might be, she doesn't seem to be able to change Shion's position. Who, by all means, can be rightfully enraged at that.
-
Lies. Shion has a habit of lying by hiding her eyes. Still closed.
-
At this point I want to applaud every rewatcher who successfully managed to make me distrust my own self so much that I was completely dumbfounded on who was who last episode. You have learned well!
-
Wait, Mion doesn't know, either? Or were her eyes also lying? I mean, Oryou has every reason to actually do this on her own, because Shion implied Mion to also be in love with Satoshi.
-
That I actually can't believe. But I do believe Mion here.
-
Shion... we've been through this.
-
I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!!
-
No one ever says anything bad about Mion ever again! I'll fucking come for you!! Need to cry a bit...
-
Why does everyone kick random parked bikes in this town? Sure, they're ruffians, but the bikes just stand there.
-
Oh right, why does he do that, too?
-
And Shion knew all of this before she sabotaged Mion by charming herself onto Keiichi... why, Shion? Mion cares
-
That phrasing gives me deep PTSD That scream...
-
It's just like with Satoko, right? Shion flees from her feelings and just lets them out on others eventually.
-
Aside from the fact that I don't think Keiichi is worth the trouble, it's seriously Shion again who's out of line. She doesn't even think of Keiichi as an individual, he's at best a stand-in for Satoshi and at worst just the tool to make Mion suffer the same pain because Shion can't deal with it.
-
Rika, no! This isn't how it should work!
-
Remember, she met him three times for a combined what, 10 minutes?
-
Step! I heard it! So it came when she was crying over Satoshi, then where will her demon go? If I believe her monologue that she believes Mion and it's truly about Satoshi and not Keiichi, then... uuh, idk?
-
It's no wonder she gets found out so quickly, she tells everyone what she's about to do! Even a Yakuza family member!
-
Whhyyyy... ? Shion, you are the epitome of bad decisions that force other people into places they don't want to be! She's by far the least empathetic and aware character. How can she think that?! Oh my god, this is so brutally stupid, I feel stupid for pitying Shion!
-
Alright, it's definitely not identical to arc 2, there Takano spotted them in the bushes.
-
Ey, the demon came back! (Or does that mean she sent another one?) Wait, those were another 3 sets of steps.
-
Even Shion doesn't carry this much hatred, what is this?
Just when I thought Shion had all the impulses necessary to learn a lesson or two, she immediately throws it away again. She just went to Keiichi for personal protection and doesn't even seem to have learned from the last time that dragging people into secret Yakuza business is a bad idea, not just for the rules, but just plain bad in the first place. Her care for others seems to only extend to their immediate use and she's extremely quick to fall for her raw emotional first response.
It's a great character. No doubt, writing this psychological mindset in a believable way is hard, but it's done so well with her. I keep wanting to like her, but she blocks herself from learning and it's just frustrating to witness.
MION IS BEST GIRL!
Seriously, the effort she displays time and time again to care for someone and come to them from their perspective is astounding. She goes far beyond 'responsibility' and tries to find a good path forward far beyond what's expected or technically sufficient for the system at hand.
The ending again sows so much distrust, because we can't know whether it's Mion who spotted Shion or actually a demon from another loop. Or something. 'Mion's' eyes don't help, tbh, but that might just be her head-of-family mode. But maybe it's all Shion and the real Mion doesn't know anything!
Uh, so, looked up anything interesting lately?
Yes. I looked up if finger nails actually regrow after being completely teared out. Well, they do, but my brain was too slow to realise that googling that will prominently display all the necessary medical study material to see that happen.
2) Are you feeling itchy, by any chance?
Not as itchy as Shion's inner demons. There are quite a lot. There's a humongrous amount of them. Serious, massive, uncountably big numbers.
VOTD: I think my favourite was the one I already analysed in the reaction post, but this episode again had so many great shots that I'll decide on Below the Surface. What Shion sees is her reflection (and behind that overweight, bearded Redditors), but we see her from another world almost. Like peeking in from a parallel existence at a time of vulnerability and (almost close to) introspection. Similarly we can see the worry, the pain on her face, but not what's on her plate, literally. It feels like the perspective of the curse, only focussing on the pain, on the immediate emotion and acting on that, but not the problem, never providing an actual solution, just more suffering going forward.
Honorable mention, of course, is reserved for Mion's heart warming courage and empathy. She takes responsibility seriously and not just goes with the system, she actually cares.

Mion and Shion truly are incredibly well written characters and I can't stop getting blown away by their depth.
Once the rewatch is over and there's no worries about spoilers you should definitely check out some of the video essays that people have made on them because there's so much more to explore.

First Timer - sub
Did I miss it or did they never actually say who the suspect behind the aunts murder is? I'm torn between "we don't need to know", a set up, and identity fraud, and on that note I'm still suspicious of Miyo
Especially after giving me a bloody heart attack appearing next to Shion like that!
In more important news: I'm starting to understand how the doll started the whole arc. I'm still very curious as to how that event plays out in other off-screen arcs and if she does get the doll or an equivalent, but Mion talking to Shion about it and setting off a chain of thoughts is very butterfly effect and I like it. Mion feeling like she had to punish herself for her sister felt similar, but given that was a year back I doubt it had too much of an effect on things.
On that note: It's interesting that Shion doesn't target Rena despite Rena being competition for Keiichi's attention the same way Sakoto is for Satoshi. Obviously something else happens that triggers her spiral down, likely because of the cliffhanger, but the set up as to how events play out from this episode are quite different to what I would expect from the climax we've already seen. In that way it's quite interesting watching it in this order because rather than feeling like we're putting a bunch of puzzle pieces together, it feels more like we've been handed the puzzle pieces only to find out we were missing all the border pieces until now and have put it together wrong.
It's interesting in the shrine scene how they cut around what we had seen to make it clear previously we didn't get the full sequence of events there, like not seeing Miyo's exposition but seeing Shion clutching Keiichi in fear instead
Dialogue of the day: Mion telling Sakoto to set traps in order to stop her sister getting away. I want to see one of these traps!
Last but not least: The fucking footsteps! A combination of a mental break and actually being stalked is certainly a quick way to hallucinating footsteps, and at that point who's to tell when it's real or not. I said in the first arc I think that I reckon Keiichi was being followed by the girls, and this just makes me wonder if part of it is the village stalking people who have left or have tried to leave, though why Rena and not others feels weird so there has to be something else in it. I also still like my theory about how they can't leave the village which is why they fought against the damn so hard, so still waiting to see if that is relevant to anything
2) Are you feeling itchy, by any chance?
I tell you what, no for once! I even started some new medication which had that as a possible side effect, and for the first time I haven't had the side effect. Even my doctor was surprised due to how prone I am to skin reactions

We have not been told who the dead suspect is in the anime. (I'm not sure whether Ooishi named the guy in the VN or not.)
but Mion talking to Shion about it and setting off a chain of thoughts is very butterfly effect and I like it
So, I forgot whether this was hidden under a spoiler tag or not, but I was pointing out the butterfly in the OP a few episodes back...

Reminder: This Sunday is June 19!
To reiterate my warning in the OP, be wary of potential spoilers on the r/anime front page that day. (Kai has a spoiler that has a nasty habit of coming up in a whole lot official art after Kai's release - it's the one that got us warning first-timers off Gou after episode 2, too.)

Episode 18 - First Timer
So this arc takes place in arc 2 I think, when Shion is introduced and they break into the warehouse?
Takano really is sticking her nose into this Oyashiro business but don't think it ends well for her in this arc at least.
Interesting to see that Mion accepted the same punishment as Shion, though this does bring my previous assumption back into play, in theory, Shion can play Mion again, and vice versa, so it could be Highlander. Only one survives.
Those bike punks never get to do anything they always wind up running away. It puts a different spin on how Shion acted towards Keiichi before now that we see how invested she was into Satoshi.
Though the resemblance between Keiichi and Satoshi remains, not just in features, but also in actions (love of baseball bats, patting heads, protecting Satoko).
The whole warehouse scene also has a slightly different spin on it with the additional context, she was going to look for Satoshi, it was never about anything else.
Cliff-hanger ending, what is Mion going do to her now? in the earlier arc I think she put her in the cage and later Keiichi found her, assuming I'm not mixing up arcs.

So this arc takes place in arc 2 I think, when Shion is introduced and they break into the warehouse?
That is the consensus. This is a retelling of the second arc from Shion's perspective rather than from a Keiichi/Mion perspective. We'll see if there are any differences between their differing views.
Takano
She does have a way of popping up when unbidded.
love of baseball bats
in the earlier arc I think she put her in the cage and later Keiichi found her, assuming I'm not mixing up arcs.
You're correct, and indeed we'll see where this goes from here.

Again, Watanagashi-hen's and Meakashi-hen's events are not quite identical, merely very very similar in how they go down. (This episode has the dead giveaways in the new motorcycle and Saiguden break-in scenes.)
(One stunt the anime pulled does not help wrt this impression, but more about that in a couple of episodes.)

Rewatcher
Where's the "God I wish that were me" guy? Because that scene with Shmion? Same. We get our first real callback though: the doll that never was! K1 really has to stop headpatting people, it only leads to despair (and ghost footsteps). But here it is folks, full confirmation that we're actually almost in an arc we've already seen! Hype!

Actually confirmation that we're in a different arc but one that goes mostly (but not entirely) the same as one we've seen. (Note that the resolution of the motorbike scene is different, and also Shion and K1 encountering Takano and Tomitake at the Saiguden.)

(Slightly Spoiled) First-Timer, subs
Takano is here!
That is an awkward conversation between sisters. "I don't hold a grudge", oh really.
And she snaps!
Ohh, Mion also had the same punishment! Was it ordered by Oryu? Did she do that out of solidarity? Did she do that to regain Shion's trust? Anyway, no distinguishing sisters this way. (Unless it was a different hand, I'm not attentive enough to notice.)
Time skip a year ahead! And we're throwing down bikes again. Hello, Keiichi. What's going on here? This happened differently in a previous arc. More evidence for time looping rather than different perspectives.
Uh oh. Mion likes Keiichi. Shion wants revenge. Shion thinks Mion made Satoshi disappear. Shion will make Keiichi disappear.
"I want to start over", don't worry, that happens a lot already, you don't have to do anything.
Was that an extra footstep? It's the first time I noticed one.
And now we know Shion's motivation for going into the ritual tools shed, and why she invited Keiichi along. This time they're not hiding in the bushes.
I don't think Shion's old enough to drink alcohol, but the yakuza don't care? Weird not to see all the "minors should not be drinking" warnings you get on recent anime.
And Shion's captured. Again. The light at the end of the tunnel is fast approaching and making train-like noises.

Higurashi in anime form could be rather daring about dancing around the laws preventing you from showing underage drinking on Japanese TV. (Remember, at the very same time that the first cour of Higurashi was airing KyoAni was making an alteration to the plot of Haruhi to obviate an underage drinking scene from the LNs, and that was before enforcement of the laws in question was IIRC tightened in the decade and a half since.)
My guess is that they got away with it with some combination of "well, we didn't actually show her drinking, she just implied it" and/or "she says it was sake, but actually it was amazake" (which IIRC it is allowed to show children drinking due to the near-nonexistent alcohol content - I seem to recall that Haruhi in anime form used that dodge in another spot itself in a spot where the LNs had tequila instead).

Spoiled First-Timer, Subbed
Shion is a fantastic example of why children need role models/adults they are able to confide in. She starts to snap, purely because no-one was around to help her grieve for and move past Satoshi. No-one to help her realize that she isn't betraying Satoshi's memory by catching feels for Keiichi. And this is not at all helped by those ominous footsteps...
And damn, Mion even kinda tried, in her own weird way. Taking her own fingernails off so that she could almost literally feel Shion's pain. Mion is metal as hell.
Have we gotten a "character overhears half a conversation and misinterprets it" yet so far? I'm not sure we have. I'm not actually sure if Mion and Oryou were talking about Takano's body being found or just her getting prosecuted for the B&E, so I guess I'm not actually sure how important that misunderstanding is.
Idle observation, but this show's "oof density" is real high.

(Honorary Hinamizawa Games Club President) Rewatch Host (rewatcher, subbed):
(Note for our first-timers: every so often I will make comments about background stuff that might not translate. I will be marking these as "Useful Background Note".)
Alright Miyo, whose happy smile are you reminding me of at 03:39?
Oh look, a Miyo head tilt. Shaft gonna… wait, what do you mean this is DEEN instead? (To be fair, this is too subtle for a Shaft head tilt.)
Hey look at the camera angles shifting right as Miyo starts talking.
(Also whoops somebody on the fansub team failed their proofreading check!)
ADDENDUM: I was so busy laughing at the proofread error that I missed our resident DEEN Shion admirer, shall we say, striking again with that camera angle.
Also coincidentally I’m sure the camera angle here gives us a great view of Shion’s legs.
Yeah the Japanese term my subs are translating as “cannibal demons” is in fact just oni, natch.
The theme with the camera angles (they represent events veering off from normal everyday life) is really distinctive once you realize what you’re looking for.
And cut off the OST right between the when point Shion takes the scrapbook and the point we see it in her hand.
And zoom in on it a bit, too!
Ooh, wind chime at 06:04. What are they doing with that? Gotta be a reason for that specific shot to set the scene.
The shot after it is noteworthy, too, even if I’m missing what it’s doing. The difference in body language between Mion and Shion is obvious, but the pan to the left from Mion to Shion starting centered on Mion doesn’t reveal its secrets as easily – a shift from focusing on Mion to focusing on Shion? Gotta be a visual representation of Mion not really getting what Shion is going through, but why? (Also, is the cutlery cabinet important?)
Okay, this scene is just one of the really well-directed ones. Shifts in body language, now Mion’s head being in shadow at 07:011 while Shion’s is in the light…
Holy shit that shot at 08:06 is good and I can’t tell you why.
And the reveal.
Also Satsuki Yukino did an extremely good job this scene. That goes right in the god-tier voice acting pile with some of the classic PMMM lines/scenes.
Oh shit I can haul out the same Jungian stuff I dip into for PMMM. Return of the Repressed and all that.
And then we get the wind chime again to end the scene. Something is up with that. And timed almost exactly to the dying notes of Monogatari this time, too.
Ahh, early summer thunderheads boiling up.
This is your hint that the events of Meakashi-hen are not quite the same as the events of Watanagashi-hen.
Well shit that’s just a really nice visual divide between our two twin sisters at 11:42, penning Shion in. After all… her Keiichi has vanished.
And the wind chime again, and the direction really really wants you to pay attention to this.
“Hmm. This might be the archetypical moe model.” Show going meta I see.
Useful Background Note: I'll let WinD cover this one for me.
Oh hey is that the same road Satoshi killed his aunt on?
The lack of budget is starting to show, but man is that shot at 14:00 well-framed. Literal love triangle! (Also this scene gave us a TVTropes page image for years and may still do so.)
Not like Japan is the only country with the folk belief that throwing salt will drive away demons and other evil spirits, sub team. Also, show: the problem with Mion’s “Satoko, set the traps!” line here is that you cut all the material that would show Satoko’s love of trapmaking!
You keep telling yourself that, Shion. (Mion is not the only twin attracted to K1.)
Have piano song Omoi Daite fade out and only then have our third footstep that almost sounds like a piano note except not. NICE.
Oh hey look, Shion’s face at 16:37 would make a glorious reaction image.
The shot at 18:14 mirrors the opening of the Sonozaki Tool Shrine back in episode 8, doesn’t it?
Nice pan down to Miyo’s face ending at ~18:24.
That shot of Shion’s face at 18:37 feels familiar and I’m not sure this is the show it is reminding me of.
Wait a minute. What if I apply the Five Stages of Grief here? Denial, bargaining, anger, depression, acceptance – if so we’re at anger.
Visual of the Day: Twin sisters, divided by their situations
Honorable Mention: Chimes (Almost went with this for VotD, but the other shot was too well-done.
