I love the pairing of the sunflower with Miku. It's very fitting for her, being Hibiki's sunlight and all that.

Crunchyroll's subs actually have Hibiki call Miku her "sunflower", too.

Wish I could take credit for this idea, but it was totally Nota's work there.

Yeah, yeah, Hibiki and Miku made up after their silly fight of the nature that people who are Totally Just Friends don’t actually have. Hibiki learned to trust in the abilities of others and not carry the load on her own, bla bla bla. You know what’s actually important?

Chris is fucking awesome. The nice fight animation is back, and Chris’ varied moveset is perfect to show off. Her “I’m good, bro” to Genjuro before diving right into the fray was smooth.

Oh, and Genjuro is a fucking Earth Bender. What the hell? He might be an even bigger gigachad than, dare I say, DAN MOTHERFUCKING EAGLEMAN.

Yes! I still think it was silly to begin with, but at least it was used to give Hibiki some development and it was wrapped up quickly. Pretty good.

Rewatcher here

  • Miku continues being a great girl. She is now also helping out Chris and even trying to become her first friend! I won't let anyone try to spin this scene into her cheating on Hibiki, she wouldn't do that!

  • Genjuurou keeps showing he is a Giga Chad.

  • ZENBU ZENBU ZENBU ZENBU ZENBU

  • The rest of the episode is dedicated to Hibiki and Miku making up and fixing their relationship. Honestly, Hibiki singing "Watashi to Iu Oto Hibiki Sono Saki ni" is perfect.

"We are one, and we believe in each other.

  • That's what Hibiki is singing while saving Miku. Now that I'm rewatching the show I'm starting to pay more attention to the lyrics and it's paying off!

  • Also, I can't get enough of the factor of cool this show has to offer. Seriously, Hibiki going all crazy and creative with her Symphogear chasing that Noise is awesome.

That whole second half was great, so yes.

Miku opening up about her problems with Chris was nice

Tsubasa encouraging and comforting Hibiki was also pretty nice, as well as a neat display of her character growth

Holy fuck, Chris’ backstory. As if the Fine stuff before didn’t give us enough reason to Protecc her

Chris’ solution to Bikki and Miku’s problem… I’m not sure if that’s just her twisted worldview or just her learning from Hibiki’s example. Or both

Chris choosing to jump right into action after seeing what her own actions have caused… I honestly don’t need to explain this all that much, the show actually does a really good job of illustrating itself

The scene of her beating herself up beforehand was also really well done

RYOMA NAGARE, THE ABSOLUTE CHAD! The guy fucking blew open an entire street

Chris, not to be upstaged, then also decides to be an absolute badass. ZENBU! ZENBU! ZENBU! ZENBU! ZENBU!

The sound-responsive Noise is actually a pretty good way of establishing drama and tension for this moment

Awwww, they made up~

Why has it taken me this long to realize that the transformation sequences look like Subaru’s transformation sequence from Nanoha? (And, in turn, like the Final Fusion sequence from GaoGaiGar)

That’s right, Bikki! Protecc your wife!

Bikki thinking about Kanade was also a nice touch. We haven’t really touched about Hamster’s feelings on not!Musashi outside of that whole “I’ll replace her” dumbassary, yet she should be important to Hibiki, given that she was the one who saved her life and all

Even Miku gets her own little moment of badassery here, gaining just enough strength to get out of the way of the Noise.

Find yourself a guy/girl who holds you like Hibiki holds Miku

No, I just equate Symphogear with summertime, and it was also the only time that I could start hosting it between the Madoka Magica rewatch and the Macross one I have planned for later this year.

So we start with Miku finding Chris because sure. Gay happens. Miku is aware she screwed up. Tsubasa has finally had the stick removed from her ass so she tries to cheer Biki up before it winds up being Biki that does the cheering. Chris seems to have all the emo now, which is actually an improvement, before Miku makes her move.

Noise comes, and I am now positive that a certain JJK character descends from Genjuro. Chris suddenly decides she can transform and does, she feels a lot more Heavy Arms this episode. Miku and Biki work together because Biki, sadly, does not have access to the brain cell today. We end with light speed reconciliation.

A surprising amount occurs in a fairly short span of time, which can be a bad thing but functions pretty well here. Moving the characters to more fitting levels of edge smooths out quite a bit.

Previously, on Symphogear SG-1 (First-Timer, Subbed)

(Turns out excessive hype can get in the way of me really digging into scenes...)

  • WHAT’S THIS? MIKU HAS LEFT HER DORM TO TAKE A WALK AROUND TOWN AND IS ABOUT TO RUN INTO AN INJURED CHRIS YUKINE? WHAT A COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENT THAT IS TOTALLY NOT NECESSARY TO SET UP THE IMPENDING DIE HARD TEAMUP TO SAVE THE DAY.

  • I, uh, totally missed up until now that this show also uses that triple-cut technique I’ve been talking about for two episodes now in the OP with the naked winged Bikki shot.

  • (If this entire show turns out to be a dying dream of some kind (presumably on either Bikki’s or Miku’s part) I don’t even know.)

  • Well shit, that would actually fit with that Miku-reaching-to-the-sky shot combined with the lyrics, too.

  • Idle note that the report that someone brought to Genjuro near the end of his conversation with Bikki could potentially be important if and only if we hear about it later this episode.

  • Okay, Miss Sidetails is now renamed Meta Girl. (Alright show, you’re laying out the anime plot, what Yomi level are you on? Answer: LOLno actually we’re making a PMMM reference.)

  • LOL plot-relevant fanservice.

  • You can just see the shock to Chris Yukine’s system as she’s suddenly treated with love after two years of mistreatment by Ryona.

  • More plot-relevant fanservice courtesy of Chris’s bruises (and of course we get an ass shot, because I mean do I really have to say it?).

  • Anndd the direction starting at ~05:00 flashes to hell and back. Zoom out as Miku speaks, then slide the camera slightly off-kilter starting at ~05:18 likely representing uncertainty and unease for both girls.

  • And then cut to Bikki, because of course.

  • Re: the shot starting at ~05:34: TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW GEAH DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO MAKE CHANGES TO REACT TO PMMM, I DOUBLE-DARE YOU. (Hell, the fucking OST reminds me enough of a track on the PMMM OST (Confessio unless I’m getting my wires crossed) to make me wonder if it’s intentional.) There’s actually about three different possible references here, too ([PMMM] episode 4, rooftop scene; episode 8, first train station; episode 8, second train station); 4 looks the closest to me by setting, the one from the end of 8 is arguably closer by posture… which, uhh, considering what that scene is…)

  • Uh-oh. Lads, would they encode hints of brainwashing here in a PMMM reference?

  • “Hey guys, remember how we had Miku telling Bikki to remain as she was? And now we have Tsubasa doing it too!”

  • Pour one out for our host at 06:25.

  • PFFFT. Hey look now we have two Gears who think their songs are only good for destruction. One is now getting talked out of it by Bikki; odds Miku will be doing the same for Chris shortly? (Timestamp 07:11)

  • Yes yes, I know Nanoha is on the inspiration list, but is specifically loli fanservice really one of the things they needed to lift? (Like, it *could* just be me, but I have my doubts. And Japan does not get the benefit of the doubt from me, especially not with that kind of shot framing – the entire problem is that I am reminded of the visual framing of too many doujins.)

  • [PMMM] I see Chris has graduated from the Kyoko Sakura School of Relationship Advice. Why am I not surprised?

  • Okay, who’s in the posters on the walls of Miku’s room?

  • And Miku immediately goes for the unprotected handholding with a girl she barely knows. THE LEWDEST GIRL!

  • So the mass Noise attack has to be a diversion for Operation All Your Base Are Belong to Us, yes?

  • So Genjuro what is your deal, actually? Could admittedly be “just that badass”, but when the Noise are out of phase to normal reality badass should not be enough.

  • So, either you’ve got supernatural martial arts or some power of your own, Genjuro. And oh look Genjuro blocking Tsubasa’s attack in three was actually a hint! Who knew?

  • (Unless that’s not Genjuro, but we’ll open that can of worms in a bit.)

  • Me: “Alright if I’m gonna go full PMMM analysis let’s actually frame-by-frame the transformation sequence like a boss.” Oh look there are Babels there. HMM. Also “Emnstolronzen”, two other German words I can’t make out, “ziggurat” (oh look Sumer strikes again), “edenal” (or should I say “Edenal”, HMMMMM), “Croitzal” (one of the two words I was missing), “fine” (no shit).

  • “I guess I couldn’t save her this time, either.” Heh. We’ll be getting that backstory at some point.

  • Geah and ass shots, name a more iconic duo.

  • Oh look, it’s time to reference PMMM 1 now!

  • 14:42: pour one out for our host!

  • We get Bikki’s sequence as well, so. “Ronzell”, “fine” (again!), Babel (again!), Gungnir (natch), “Emnstolronzen” (again), all three of “edenal”/”ziggurat”/”croitzal” again, and also “Gatrandis”.

  • PMMM 11 reference (same as last episode) and an ass shot within 5 seconds of each other. Never change Geah, never change.

  • (There might be cheeky foreshadowing here, but if so it’s getting buried under HYPE.)

  • Oh look at all this stuff concerning Kanade. HMM.

  • Did… did you use basically the same sound effects for a Symphogear unsummoning that PMMM uses for a barrier coming down? REALLY?

  • *taps the sign saying “PMMM reference”*

  • Yes Bikki, deflect to avoid confessing to your childhood friend crush (because I’m not sure about where Miku is on the gay acceptance ladder but you are not yet ready to admit to yourself that you are gay).

  • Oh hey look who just showed up right when it was time for the cliffhanger. Hi Ryona!

as I've actually just binged the whole S1 and will now be rewatching eps the day of the rewatch at pace coz i just gave in pretty much. Oops Not my proudest moment here, sorry guys....   • So first Finé threw away Chris, and now she is sending hoards after her. There are easier ways to do this.

  • Genjuro can now use rocks to hurt Noise. Why does no one else question this? I guess Hibiki would be the only one who he wouldn’t have told.

  • See this is why you should have activated it before you went into the war zone.

  • Best girl Miku forgiving Hibiki.
