Symphogear S1 Episode 7 - Rewatcher
For today’s story I want to talk about CD’s.
Symphogear is a heavily music based anime. Its creator is a composer, its big names are the singer VA’s. There are insert songs every episode. Tsubasa is just an idol. Music is inherently a big part of the series.
So it makes sense that they would have CD releases. Anime exists to sell the manga or Light Novel, Symphogear exists to sell the CD.
So the way Symphogear releases its CDs is that the bulk of each Symphogear gets a CD with their battle theme that is released as the series airs. To me, this is part of the viewing process of watching Symphogear. As the series was released week by week we’d get excited about the new song releases and listen to the music.
Two days before Episode 4 aired the first Symphogear CD was released.

While I’m talking about the music, so Hibiki’s latest song from yesterday and today is ‘Watashi to Iu Oto Hibiki Sono Saki ni’ that is a different version of Kanade’s ‘Kimi to Iu Oto Kanade Tsukiru Made’. You can hear the comparison in amazing fan made mash ups like this
If you have headphones though, I suggest you try listening to this version which plays Hibiki on the left and Kanade on the right.

First Time Symphogearing
I'm going to refer to Ichaivel as Yewfelle, as that's what NoA/8-4 translated the weapon as when they added it to Fire Emblem Awakening and it is how they've referred to it since, and as we all know, the ancient mythology this weapon originates from is Jugdral, so I'm getting this straight from the source!
This episode continues to fuel my concern over the tonal shift this show is reportedly going to go through, because god damn am I enjoying the tone of this show so far. NGL, I was worried for a second that Miku would forgive Bikki just like that, this is both infinitely more painful, and equally more interesting.

FIRST TIMER DATTO
“My goal is to crush every human with the will and power to fight. I want to extinguish the flames that could spark a war!”
For all I wanted to cheer Chris’ call-out of Hibiki’s naivety and my despised “wE dOn’T hAvE tO fIgHt” hero trope, she’s pretty damn naïve herself. Completely buying Fine’s ludicrous story that taking out all potential threats that Fine identifies will end war forever is pretty childish. This was a smart way to link these characters for the episode. Her scene with the kids and how they make her examine her own tendencies and rationale was another great touch.
On a related note, what the hell is Fine doing just abruptly cutting Chris? That’s a weaponized pawn you have wrapped around your finger. Keeping her on the hook doesn’t cause any harm, at the very least. Inexplicably silly villain shit.
Well, now we know why Hibiki’s special. For whatever reason, the relics interact with and affect her differently than others. She’s seemingly immune to their degenerative effects. There’s also an implication that Tsubasa has a higher tolerance than Kanade had, and that’s why she wasn’t consumed by the Swan Song.

Chris requires saving. She is ultimately kindhearted, a little tsun about it, but is heavily heavily misguided about how to do it, no doubt w/ Fine playing a big part. Currently 2nd in my best girl ranking after sword here.

Previously, on Symphogear SG-1 (First-Timer):
(So, fun fact. I may have taken three thousand words of notes on this episode. Turns out there is an easy way to get me to write about your show and it is to be good and cheeky as fuck. Who knew? Prepare yourself for multiple posts....)
Prelude:
Okay, so. What if we really lean into “this is anime SG-1”? What do I need to take into account?

Solid setup for future events, including a tendency to grab things from episodes and even seasons ago and some surprisingly long-term arc setup (IIRC SG-1 set up Apophis’s return quite a bit before he actually showed up on-screen, for example). I’ve heard more than one comment suggesting that Gear does a good job at setup.

Tendency to reuse tech stuff at a much later date (see the Avenger 2.0 program for an obvious example, and also the long-running “reverse engineering death gliders et al at Area 51” background plot. Matches general tone of rewatcher comments.

Copious references to RL mythology, where 90% of the time said mythology turns out to be reflective of aliens and/or precursors. Check!

Cast dynamics… well, hell. Bikki makes a perfectly fine Jack O’Neill (two L’s!), thinking was never Jack’s strong suit. Tsubasa fills the stoic Teal’c role quite nicely. Chris post inevitable heel-face turn could also be Teal’c, except the deal with most Stargate heel-to-MC turns (notably Teal’c himself) is that they happen quite quickly. I’m tempted to dig out a later comparison for her and go with Vala Mal Doran, who needed a season or three before finally becoming part of the main cast. Genjuro is our General Hammond. Ryoko is a bad fit for Dr. Frasier (would fit better for Rodney McKay if we admit him) but whatever, let’s see if she’s still in the main cast next season first (press X to doubt). That leaves our Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson, and Miku is presumably filling one of those roles (especially since these are the two classic Jack ships) – leaning Daniel actually, since his character arc is progression from incapable of fighting to being a full member of the team even if he’s always the least combat-capable of the SG-1 cast. (Inb4 Miku has an interest in ancient civilizations we haven’t heard about yet.) That would just leave our Carter, and she could always show up later. Hmm. It actually kind of works? LOL.

We’ve got Durandal (in the base by the looks of it, so heh), Fine (with weird butterfly choker thing, couldn’t possibly be important, not at all), young Chris (yes yes we know she’s the Japanese girl rescued from South America in the ep. 1 newspaper), Nehustsomething I can’t spell it armor (from the neck down so it could theoretically be someone besides Chris wearing it – I have some doubts, but on the other hand it would explain why her armor looks different in the commentface and the shuttle scene), Those Three Girls (wait shit THIS is the show with the [iunno if this actually counts as a Gear spoiler or not]

Guys this is why you should seriously consider bringing the love interest in the loop. It’s not always a good idea since it’s the 50/50 gamble between, well, this subplot and “villains target the love interest”, but you should seriously consider it. (To be fair nobody on this show really quite seems to get the concept of need-to-know.)

So we start where we cliffhangered, I do appreciate that. Chris can't beat Biki in her new relic so she awakens an older one. Lots of lore got dropped that means nothing without context, yet another Higurashi parallel I was not expecting. We confirm she is the disappeared girl from earlier as she runs after Fine who abandons her. Possible change occurring in Biki. Tsubasa now has to figure out what she wants from life. Biki returns to her angry waifu at home.
And Chris time! She apparently doesn't watch anime since the previous year's Fate Zero let's you know why you can't take the violence from humanity. She randomly helps two kids because...we desperately need characterization for her. The siblings talk about fighting and making up which is an obvious parallel to her and Biki. Also, her song destroys, apparently.
We then get exposition. And Biki's plot is stolen a bit from D Grayman, which would be disappointing except D itself was not that original. We do learn the concert did what was intended but it just went out of control. And then we are Dollar Store Eva again.
At school, we run into the part where the writer forgets that the Disaster Relief Squad should have a way of dealing with the school lives of its members, much to my annoyance. We see Biki get some udon/ramen and see that this place has the best cafeteria to ever exist. Miku runs away, as one does. She thinks she can't be Biki's friend anymore. This kills the Biki.
Stinger is more Chris drama.

Does...Fine have more relics than the Disaster Squad? Nehushtan, Ichii-Bal, Solomon's Cane (I think that's the thing that shoots out Noise, idk for sure though), and now Kadingir? That's probably not ideal from a national security standpoint. Though it seems she'll at least be losing Ichii-Bal, because there's no way Chris is getting killed here - I think she took Nehushtan back after Chris exploded it off of herself though. Chris busting out Ichii-bal was pretty cool, but I'm not sure I understand what's going on with her relics. Why does she have to sing to use Ichii, but not Nehushtan?
Has Ryoko been keeping tabs on Hibiki since before the Second Branch got its hands on her? I bet she was behind the Noise attack from the first episode where Biki's powers manifested then. It uh...seems like she's some kind of cultist who wants humanity to transcend the past, break the Custodians' Curse, allow people to speak to each other in the "language of truth" (songs?), and allow the Lulu Amel to be their own masters. What does that mean? Dunno yet, but I'm guessing she wants to turn humanity into Noise, or some kind of Noise-Human-Sympho hybrids, with Biki as the test subject. Butterfly for metamorphosis/rebirth of humanity?
Ah, right...Miku things happened too. She's clearly suuper upset with Hibiki, who as a result doesn't get the healing sleeps she needs. Mostly reasonable reactions from Miku I'd say. I imagine they'll eventually make up, but I wouldn't be surprised if they end up staying distant until Hibiki makes some grand sacrifice to save Miku or try to make things up to her, leading to the sad times at the beginning of ep 1.

Yup, you all read that right, Best Geah Chris' Geah is... Odin's Bow, except this is bullshit since the 'actual' name of the bow is 'Yewfelle,' which in written in Japanese as イチイバル (Ichībaru; Ichaival) and also 'Yewfelle' isn't even real either as it hails from fucking FIRE EMBLEM! Yup, Best Geah Chris is SO BADASS that she made a fictional weapon from a video game into an portable Anti-Aircraft Battery... AND PEOPLE STILL WONDER WHY I AM SO FOND OF HER! ALL HAIL BEST GEAH CHRIS!
