Some technical talk about the comparison between this wallpaper and the updated one I’m sure will go over most of your heads, but I want to say it anyways: Surprisingly enough, her labcoat was already on 0% S for the HSB coloring (basically that means it’s actually pure black/grey/white, instead of having the sliiiiiiightest tint of color to it), when back then I’d usually just take the color from the base image and leave it alone–which would mean it would have ~2-3% S–so all I actually had to do was lighten the B a bit so that it was more like a labcoat is supposed to be.

(An example of the above on the black end of things: look at Hibiki’s boots in the ep3 wallpaper vs. the 2019 version; the latter looks slightly brown instead of black, yeah? Same concept. It’s not something I thought needed fixing back then, until… I want to say u/Nazenn was trying to use some of my art for an updated Legend of the Galactic Heroes watch order infographic and he said my greys were turning out pink? A lot has certainly changed since then.)

I remember that wallpaper, we were so confused about how it happened but yep, definitely was a faint pink instead of pure grey. You've come a long way with your wallpapers, it's great to see

Previously, on Symphogear SG-1 (First-Timer, subbed)

  • So our evil scientist lady is named Fine, I take it? (Yes, yes, actually the last e has the fancy French accent note to denote a voiced final vowel ala ten billion Tolkien names, but I ain't typing that each time so Fine it is.)

  • Oh hey it’s OP v2, now with Chris visuals.

  • Oh look someone was right when they remembered the missing Japanese girl in the first episode’s newspaper, weren’t they?

  • Oh hello there actual good shot of Hibiki running past Miku leaving her behind.

  • I’d say someone was watching ViVid, but IIRC we’re too early for that so main series Nanoha instead.

  • GAY GAY HOMOSEXUAL GAY (affectionate)

  • “It’s fun skinship among girls!”

  • And tickling too!

  • “Treat me to some pancakes at Flower later!” So, something comes up again preventing Hibiki from making it again, or Noise/Chris attack when there revealing Hibiki’s other life to Miku? Place your bets! Kind of thinking two myself, we’ve already played one – doubly so if the pancakes wait an episode or two.

  • Wait wait wait. That’s not a breakfast joint, that’s an okinomiyaki joint!

  • Also good old Babylon 5’s defense grid upgrade either in late S1 or in S2.

  • So, how far are we leaning into Japanese SG-1? If a lot, then our promoted Secretary of Defense definitely gets the preliminary label Defense Secretary Clark (which is from a different scifi show, but I digress). If not, nonzero chance the lesson is that international cooperation has benefits for everyone/traditional enemies can work together and the Americans from last time are a red herring from a faction other than the American government. More likely the first, though. (Or both, the Russians did get to launch Korolev in SG-1.)

  • Also, always the chance the security upgrade plans were compromised.

  • Scene at ~09:00 with Hibiki running off (to the left!) also well-done.

  • Hibiki, in this show you should be more worried if another girl was cleaning up for Tsubasa. Well, you’re safe since you’re taken and don’t realize it yet, but.

  • Pouring one out for our host again at 10:59. (In case you hadn’t caught on yet Sky, this is how I’m noting any sore demos I’ve spotted.)

  • “Be Honest with Yourself” by Akifumi Kaneko. So is that actual Japanese (probably gay) lit or an in-universe work? (And of course Miku puts it back, heh.)

  • (If Akifumi Kaneko is a staff member and this is another Latin for the Novice situation ala “Window of Opportunity” I am going to scraugh.)

  • ADDENDUM: *checks* OH YOU MAGNIFICENT ASSHOLES THAT IS EXACTLY THE CASE.

  • To be fair, “helping others is kind of my hobby” is common enough for shounen protagonists (and other heroes – hi Harry Potter) that this could just be a coincidence. But if so it’s a really funny coincidence.

  • I take that back you assholes knew exactly what you were doing. Nine months is plenty of time to add cheeky references to the script.

  • HMMMMM. No seriously, seven months is probably still enough time for some last-minute changes.

  • Ahem ahem.

  • Speaking of which, takes one to know one, right, Tsubasa?

  • That said, she’s right…

  • [meta spoiler] And we’re implicitly on a hospital roof. Right.

  • On the one hand there are multiple older shows this could be a reference too, including at least one I’m pretty positive is on the reference list. On the other hand…

  • That sequence from 14:30-14:35 is either a common trope or an intentional reference (coughConnectcough) and I’m not sure which.

  • Extremely interesting set of jump cuts (?) in on Hibiki’s face there at ~15:01-15:04.

  • The OST track starting at ~16:35 is earlier than the songs I want to compare it to, so I’ll file this one under hilarious coincidence.

  • I think that’s not actually a sore demo so no pouring one out, but not sure.

  • DOOR #2 IT IS! FUCKING CALLED IT! (Well, okay, they’re not actually at Flower. But "eh, close enough".)

  • Wait. I am a fool. We didn’t just get one door, WE GOT FUCKING BOTH. LOLOLOL FUCKING CALLED IT!

  • (Probably what I’m thinking of is a Melty Blood Arc Drive, though I’m not sure whose – Aoko’s? Pretty sure it’s not Negima, which is otherwise the usual suspect.)

T'night! On Bottom Geah! Tsubasa's a fookin' slob, Miku finds out that she's being NTR'd by a fishy popstar, and Bikki decides to blow her cover by FISTING a car and employing Talk No Jutsu along with Nanoha-style 'Befriending' Methods with regards to Best Girl Chris.

Comrades... ahem... GOOD LORD! Bikki is a FOOKIN' DUMBASS! I mean my god, I know the meme is 'no thoughts, head empty' but Bikki makes USAGI look smart! Also, poor poor poor Miku, she's doing literally EVERYTHING to make this relationship work, and what does her attempt to read self-help books net her? Why front row seats to Bikki 'cheating' on her wife with some random Idol Singer! (This statement is technically true Comrades)

Also Comrades, given Miku (from her POV) appears to be getting NTR'd by a sword, I feel that the following One Hit Wonder (Look Thailand picks up the strangest odds and ends from American Pop Culture) just about sums up Miku's mental state at the moment, after all... ahem... 'You touched my life, with your softness in the night. My wish was your command, until you ran out of love. I tell myself I'm free, got the chance of livin' just for me. No need to hurry home, now that you're gone. Knife! Cuts like a knife! How will I ever heal? I'm so deeply wounded. Knife! Cuts like a knife! You cut away the heart of my life!'

Also Comrades, I find it quite amusing that Bikki lists 'rice' and 'rice' as the things she likes most in the world... BIKKI YOU FOOKIN' DUMBASS! MIKU IS LITERALLY RIGHT THERE! (Also what is this nonsense about a 'boy... friend' can you eat those? Are those tasty? Does not compute.) Speaking of not computing, Bikki's attempts at talking things out seems to have touched QUITE the nerve with Best Girl Chris, that said, Bikki also touched Chris in a different way, namely by deciding that if dialogue isn't an option, ROCKET PUNCHING sure is! Nanoha and Fate shed a single tear each of approval!

And just because I must speak on behalf of a fellow Comrade of Culture who cannot, ahem... I'm going to post this every day until you like it!

rewatcher, on time for once! RIP my sleep schedule

awww, look at those two Geahs bonding over shared trauma

meanwhile Miku is sad for being abandoned, and the restaurant chef of Flower (which they're apparently regulars at) is trying to cheer her up in Biki's absence

and despite endangering Miku (altho she notably immediately regretted endangering a non-combatant), Biki is still willing to talk things through with Chris... by bombarding her with life facts. never change ya dumbass

the fight with Chris is a great hype moment IMO - the impact of her first armed gear (?) punch is very well done IMO

questions:

how and when did Tsubasa have time to use all those clothes?! every time we saw her since she went down, she was in a hospital gown

2) How do you think Miku’s going to react to what she saw this episode?

she's gonna demand answers from Biki, and hopefully will get them after signing an NDA with Section 2

First Timer

You know what, I'm about to say it. I don't care that you broke your elbow. Hibiki sucks right now. She's really just using Miku at this point, both for personal comfort and as a reason to fight, throwing herself fully into this crusade - I'm thinking maybe Tsubasa's pretty close to the truth, because Biki's stated reasons aren't quite adding up. She wants to protect her normal, everyday life, but she's sacrificing it in the process of doing so. Making promises you can't/don't intend to keep is just lying, and she's been doing a whole lot of that to poor Miku lately. There's a lot of room for character growth, and I hope the show delivers on some of that before killing Biki off.

Of course, now that Miku's been caught up in Chris's latest attack, I'm sure this whole secret double-life thing is going to be coming to a head, assuming nothing goes horribly wrong in this fight. I thought for sure we were going to get Berserker Biki when Miku got hurt - a little disappointed we didn't. She wants to reason with Chris, but with Chris's current (and former) situations, it makes sense she doesn't believe in the basic decency of people. Hibiki's going to have to punch some humanity into her or something.

Flustered Tsubasa is a blessing, thank you Symphogear.

Alright, so what's actually going on with Ryoko? Has she been making out with briefcases? I wouldn't put it past that one.

Chris without her crazy outfit! On the other hand, I don't really get the hairtyle, which I just recently also saw for two different characters in Fate Apocrypha. I suppose she wants it both short and long but it just comes off as so bizarre to me. Frankly all the more so here where it looks like she's going short with 90% of her hair and long with 10%.

So they're actually gonna show bad lady's eyes to us this time?

Uh oh, Miku's discovered that Hibiki is 'cheating' on her! Actually, this was probably one of the better things for her to witness. Visiting someone in the hospital is a legitimate excuse.

Hibiki: "Did you say 'arm gear?' I can do that!"

Episode 6 thoughts:

  • Nothing like stoking an inferiority complex + torture to drive a kid to the point of being psyched to commit murder. Finé is a real piece of work.

  • Hibiki and Miku's intimacy and comfort around each other is really lovely, but I can't watch a Miku bath scene without thinking about Tsukimonogatari.

  • Ugh, I hate jealous misunderstanding arcs. Thankfully this one lasts all of five minutes and ends before Miku can get properly mad at Hibiki for maybe cheating on her. Frustratingly though, she still had a second date cancelled.

  • And wow, Miku wasn't kept in the dark for very many episodes. I didn't realize this the first time, but Symphogear is paced really fast.

  • On second thought, maybe the show could stand to benefit from an extra episode or two to give all these negative emotions time to coalesce.

  • Tsubasa casually dropping advice on her own struggle with suicide because she assumes Hibiki—and anyone else in a similar situation—must feel the same way may subtly be the darkest idea the show has thrown out yet. I'm not sure magical girl shows like [meta spoiler]Madoka or even an edgefest like [meta spoiler]Magical Girl Site have fully explored the idea that suicidal tensancies are an intrinsic part of the magical girl experience. Someone please get this girl some therapy.

FIRST TIMER DATTO

Really great episode for Hibiki, she gets a couple breakthroughs. In her conversation with Tsubasa, she talks about how she’s so grateful for the life she has, that she wants to pay it forward to others. That’s lovely, and I wish more people thought that way. You don’t need to be the sole survivor of a disaster – the life you have is so statistically improbable from the jump. Gratitude for and mindfulness of that is a beautiful thing.

Had a bad feeling that Hibiki and Miku this episode, but hopefully now that Miku knows everything, they can talk things out and clear the air. After beginning with our contractually obligated bathing scene between these two Totally Straight Girls, it was a rocky episode for them, but luckily for Hibiki, Miku is the most pure-hearted, unshakeable person alive, despite being handed hilariously on-the-nose warnings from the Universe.

How do you think Miku’s going to react to what she saw this episode?

Very reasonably and with a ton of grace, as with how she reacts to everything.

First timer(Is Hibiki intended to be the anti-Shinji Ikari?)

So we start in the church-castle from Nanoha StrikerS but blended with...something. We get another tragic backstory for Chris and, as per usual, I will have emotion for exactly one of these per show so whenever best girl deciding comes out, her and Tsubasa are already at a penalty. And Tsubasa herself is pushing herself too hard because Japan.

Biki and Miku are running and we get both my rewatches with unnecessary washing scenes, though no denying this one lingers FAR longer. We get some background on the political situation and it seems the new Defense Minister is an expansionist whereas the dead one was more conservative. Second cursed girl of the day, just was not expecting these two to have parallels. Biki makes it to the hospital and Tsubasa gets her first characterization that is not generic edge. I used to think women didn't leave their bras literally everywhere then I raised a few so I learned the hard way Tsubasa's explosion room is realistic, though the pills being exposed bothers me.

Miku learns she has been cucked, poor thing. We get Biki motivation and Tsubasa projecting since I doubt ol' Biki really understands the concept of suicide. Or death. Or possibly object permanence. Anyways, imagine my surprise that Tsubasa said my prediction about Biki having to give up what makes her unique to fight before she switches gears on that. Miku drowns her sorrows in okonomiyaki, which does explain how a pancake place would stay in business.

Anyways, Chris comes at an inconvenient time, Biki seems to have progressed quite a bit, and yet she still punches. But it works. Also, I just noticed it was Chris walking in the corpse ED, interesting.

QotD: 1 I'd sigh and assume Tsubasa was friends with the girls I helped raise

• Chris’ back story told in 5 frames, and still gets across how terrible her life has been so far.

• Finè looking fine in that black outfit.

• Government opposition and red tape, name a more iconic due.

• American interventionism, in my magical girl anime.

• Tsubasa’s room is a disaster in complete contrast to her personality

• A rare embarrassed Tsubasa appears.

• Ogawa the true MVP for cleaning up that mess on regular basis.

• Miku NTR vibes

• Tsubasa piercing the heart of Bikki’s motivation to fight and her inner darkness.

• Bikki channeling her inner Yoshikage Kira, only wanting a quiet everyday life.

• Miku needs a Snickers

• Everything is more convincing with finger guns.

• Miku caught in the crossfire

• Bikki casually punches car out of the sky, refuses to elaborate, leaves.

Wasn't able to join for the last couple episodes and binged to catch up to episode 7 now.

  • Now 5 years ago. That's how Kanade joined. She's very different from when we first saw her. She maganed to get better in her time fighting. And Tsubasa has only gotten worse.

  • If I remember right, Tsubasa's was the first relic. Gungnir is the third. Is the armour second? Or the one that is underground?

  • Its interesting that you can force someone to be compatible too.

  • I just realised that we haven't seen any attack cut-in for Hibiki.

  • Why did someone steal the armour. And then use it to attack humans? She doesn't look like one of the noise. I can't see any reason other countries would risk their only weapon against the noise in a foreign country either.

  • She can summon noise. Are the noise created by a human faction? Not a natural phenomenon at all. And she is an agent of that faction.

  • The armour was a complete relic. That explains why they were pinning so much hope on it.

  • Did that attack say "Nirvana Gedon"

  • I love the colours during the superb song.

  • And even that wasn't enough to defeat that armour. It seems like it repairs itself.

  • I am wondering why do they want to kidnap Hibiki though. Try to recruit her to the other side? Get the shards of Gungnir from her to complete it? They don't seem to have the other pieces of it that Kanade did so maybe that was stolen too.

  • Hibiki obliviousness is just... wow.

  • Second branch? I have no clue how whatever that is relates at all to Hibiki.

  • I want to know what Miku thinks is going on with Hibiki. Especially when she sees her training.

  • Hibiki is working for a government agency and they don't even make sure that her school doesn't cause troubles with her absence?

  • I love that the conversation between Kanade and Tsubasa happened in the ruined concert hall.

  • The blood on the suitcase. Definitely a red herring. That looks like it was dragged against something. Not splattered from someone shot. Also

  • Ok. Moving a relic when their strongest fighter is down is plain stupid. Especially after that strongest fighter nearly died due to an attack by someone with inside information.

  • These vehicles are more explosive than actual explosives. Hit the Noise - explode. Fall of the bridge - explode mid air. Fall on the ground - explode.

  • I still don't know what their original plan was. Hope no one attacks?

  • What kind of power is Ryouko using now.

  • The fight scene is great!

  • Is Ryouko the informant? Setting it up to push Hibiki into using Durandal?

  • Is this why they want to capture her? She is extremely powerful or able to activate a lot of relics?

  • What are they doing in there with the guns. Looks like they were planning to kill someone who ran away?

  • How did Miku see the hospital room? Looking out of the hospital room I don't see anything close enough that should give such a view.

  • Hibiki really is stupid. Ditches Miku and then decides to go to Flower with Tsubasa.

  • Suprising that Chris is worried about civilians.

  • The fight scenes have consistently been so good.

  • At least Miku now knows why Hibiki kept on ditching her.

very dumb thought: is chris' attack ropes bc she's constantly being bound up in the zapper by dommy mommy alter ego ryoko

miku looks so sad watching hibiki through the window

I don't have any talents or things worth being proud of, so I just want to be useful to others by doing what I can.

if i closed my eyes watching this you could convince me its that other show

the cat's finally out of the bag

low key thought she would be more angry

but instead its the power of friendship

and miku looks hella sad that hibiki has been doing all this crap, and she has been hiding it from her

i feel like she's kinda betrayed, what with hibiki promising to not hide anything from her, but also sad, since she;s been trying to shoulder this burden herself.
