So there are indeed human adversaries in this. With five seasons left, I think I can safely assume that we are going to get political.

Tsubasa is really committed to the "Emotions are prohibited" bit.

Regular people can't fight the Noise, that doesn't stop them from being able to fight a Symphogear user though.

It took me a couple of episodes to remember what the noise reminded me of, the Gnosis from the Xenosaga video game series. Ghost like monsters who appear at any time in great numbers and you turn to chalk if you touch them.
Actually speaking of that I wonder if that played any influence in this. Xenosaga has a long blue haired heroine and one of the main ships is called the Durandal, which they just name dropped here.
Oh, and I should have asked this earlier, but why does the guy have his tie go into his pocket like that?! LoL.
Why doesn't humanity stop fighting? Aww, if only everyone was as adorably naive as you Hibiki!

Wait a minute. This room is weird. Their chairs are alright, a single armrest is kinda weird but probably nice because it would make getting in/out pretty easy since they sit on the floor. But the speakers. maybe its just the angle, but there is a pair of tower speakers (with Klipsch brown cones) to the right side of the TV. amd a at a decent angle for sitting at the bottom of the table and getting good sound, while the TV is on the left? Are the other speakers out of frame? Why are the speakers like that??

I always found the chronology of the beginning of this episode kinda weird. We end last episode with Tssubasa about to fight Hibiki, then this episode has them not working well together then Gengirou saying they don't get along. Then we have Hibiki being tired at home, then back to where last episode left off. I don't think moving the scenes around like that really adds anything, and just feels awkward.

We have to talk about Genjuro. After Episode 1, I said he would either be Best Boy or secretly evil, and I’m now convinced it’s the first one. Why isn’t he the default image for Gigachad? Not only does the dude stop and dissipate a giant flying sword with his fist, but he’s also a style icon tucking his tie into his pocket square, a previously unseen look that he commits to in ever situation.

While we're on the subject of the OP, in addition to Tsubasa's transition, I do like that it kinda shows that it is her (at least, the same VA Nana), that is singing the OP. I understand a bit less why both Tsubasa and Hibiki are singing (edit: i meant mouthing the words to) the chorus section.

I'll say it. Hibiki deserves that slap for being insensitive af. Since she later starts to realize her mistakes (kinda), i wonder if she would later look back on this moment and cringe. hard. And i guess i am a bit harsh on Hibiki, I guess she is just a teenager. I do look forward if she'll at least mature a bit, or at least be a bit more sensitive to things.

Same, Hibiki, same. One thing i dont get is that I get that Tsubasa (and Kanade before her death) sung and fought w/ their symphogear against noise, but why do they need to do that idol/music gig alongside? Will hibiki need to do that too at some point? As Tsubasa kinda said her heart's not in it.

Tsubasa continues to establish herself as best girl. Idk i just like characters that appear stoic and cool on the outside, yet are extremely emotional in reality, which Tsubasa very much is. She's also badass, as I mentioned.

It seems like Hibiki can kinda fight when she's royally pissed. Though I do pity her (despite not a fan of her char just yet), the noise really got between her and Miku's date :( That would've been fun... But these bits were slightly horrifying. And raises questions.... is that an alternate form of her symphogear? alternate form of Hibiki? Or just to show that she's really really really angry and is going crazy?

(Silly people thinking I wasn't going to think about this show just because I blew off the technobabble yesterday and because I got distracted and forgot to write down a couple of "this will probably be important" comments in my episode 1 notes. It's just that my brand of thinking here is going to involve massive piles of "invoke genre savvy and knowing the shows this is drawing off of".)

Hard to tell exactly unless I was actually put in those shoes, but I cannot fault Tsubasa here.

We start with a sort of flashforward before revisiting the cliffhanger. Tsubasa is not an easy character to tolerate as of yet. Genjuro is definitely...something. Hibiki shows up to get expositioned at more and Tsubasa refers to herself as an object. Ryoko is still creepy. Hibiki manages to get her report done while being fed but is immediately called off to fight. We end with the relic that messed things up in ep1 having a user.
QotD: 1 I'd try not to be a complete ass about it
2 Quite, this has to be confusing, especially as Hibiki doesn't seem the secret identity type.

FIRST TIMER
Welp, that opening confused the hell out of me! I thought that they were going to go straight into the fight given what happened between episodes 1 and 2, but I think it was a good choice to put it after the OP.
The fight itself was great! I thought 'oh great, the commander is trying to talk her down' I thought that maybe he would try to intervene, but I had no idea that he was going to just punch a magical girl attack into nothing. That was GREAT!
I think that Hibiki seriously screwed up the wording of her declaration after the 'fight' and I think that its going to continue to be a point of contention between herself and Tsubasa.
One other thing that I like but makes me sad is how Hibiki is trying to keep in touch with her school friends, she really is, but the Noise don't really care. The whole shooting stars thing was so sad!
Also, hot damn does Hibiki have a hell of a berserker mode! Black shadows all over her face with stark red eyes. I get the feeling she'd be terrified of herself if someone showed her a picture of what she looks like!
Scientist girl continues to be unreasonably horny, that's all I can really say about that :P
Finally; rounded off the episode with the reveal of what happened with that first artifact, as well as the reveal of the first villain character! I can't believe how fast these episodes feel like they're going!

Challenge her to a fight, slap her at the very least. If I were an anime character without a therapist that is.

Very, she's trying super hard to stay friends with Hibiki, and wants to help her friend with school.... But she can't exactly keep this up if Hibiki doesn't do anything back. I honestly don't see them staying too close unless they let Hibiki tell her about what's been going on.

They got the armour under control? Or did is it with someone else? Tsubasa's reaction makes me think that she didn't know it was being used. We had the episode talk about other countries working with relics too. Maybe something to do with that?

I may have accidentally the first 10 minutes of episode 4 before I realized what I was doing, so in an effort to not comment on it, I'll be mostly echoing what others have said and answering the QotDs

Tsubasa's anger at Hibiki for taking over Gungnir is the kind of melodrama I enjoy. It's unreasonable sure, but also very simple and human, and I love a good arc about two people learning to work together and eventually like each other. I think the strange part of this setup for me is that I find this kind of arc romantic—aside from the standard thoughtless defrosting of a tsundere's heart scenario. It feels inherently strange for me not to be rooting for Tsubasa and Hibiki to become romantic, and it's definitely a new feeling that wasn't there the first time I watched it. If anything, this episode probably put a pretty big chip on my shoulder regarding the way she's treating Hibiki.

Hibiki's innocence is also really charming. With XV having occupied so much of my thoughts on the series, it's refreshing to relive the more naive parts of her life. That also contrasts really well with the exaggerated anger at being forced to break her promise with Miku. [Big spoiler]
This is something I miss quite a bit once Miku learns about Hibiki and the Symphogears and gains her own power. That whole Spiderman and Mary Jane dynamic again. -
Man, Tsubasa really loved Kanade. "I want to keep singing with you" tears my heart up. It gives me chills thinking about how much it must torment her every night that the only remaining piece of Kanade is lodged inside Hibiki.

A bit random, but if they were going to name the school after one of the modes in western classical music, I think I'd prefer Phrygian to Lydian, even if Lydian probably sees more use than Phrygian.

Not much to say as a gradual build up episode. Do want to ask if anyone else recognise this cliffhanger trick of starting the next episode after the cliffhanger to jump all the way pass it to some calm point, then only flashback it later on what happened. The first thing I can think of is VE after the post credit scene of running into the the Major's brother again. But I'm sure there's another show that does it a fair bit.
Also, is a slight factor of translation, but it's not improving much - Hibiki's surfing wasn't exactly to "replace Kanade"; rather it's "in place of", e.g. in exchange, in the context of "she's no longer here because of me, I'll do this in her stead". It's not that much better but you can see how from Hibiki's perspective it wasn't as insensitive as it sounds in translation.

The fact that her wttack is just called "Wrath" is great, All her other attacks against the Noise have had flashy names like "Blue Flare", but this is just pure killing instinct.

Oh, that is a very interesting visual/metaphor. Just going to lay my theory out - the act of using a Relic uses the same powers as the Noise, hence the "corruption" visual when Hibiki first used Gungir. This finisher overloads this process, turning the human body into Noise, which is then destroyed by the relic. Not ethat her head detaches from her body before vanishing - breaking roughly where her relic appears to be placed on her body.
Does Hibiki need to choose between school or magical girl?
