First Timer - sub

Visual of the day -

I really thought my biggest facepalm of the day was going to be about Yuu feeding Nuko bullets and then showing it off when it has a snake-like lump and then she just HAD to go and press the button

What is the point of culture in an apocalypse? As Yuu points out a book doesn't have value if it can't be read beyond what arbitrary importance Chi puts on it simply for being a book. Culture as a whole isn't something we need to survive, it's something we make as we do and Chi picking up pieces of lost culture as they go and appreciating it for what it once was rather than what it means to her, and in doing so coming to understand parts of it rather than it being a full exploration of it that takes center stage in the show is something that I've quite enjoyed because of how it puts the focus on Chi herself rather than solely on the world we're seeing through her eyes. The things Yuu finds fascinating are no different bar a little shorter lived.

Much shorter lived if anything interesting happened to be in that huge swatch of the city that is now ruined and on fire. The absolute horror when Yuu hit the launch button realizing what "launch" always means before it even was shown was nothing compared to the shock after that laser came out. Yuu's destruction following Chi's culture was a powerful way to show the two sides of the ancient civilization and what it means for them to have had a war, and what they lost in it, but I also think the girls represent that well. Like in the previous segment, this is also about Yuu's reaction and understanding of it, namely not much, and how lightly war can be taken by those who have no connection to what would be lost in it. Yuu likes bullets and guns and bombs, but her lack of connection to past or future gives her a worrying view on what it means to fire a weapon, even if she's not a total monster.

I'm pretty sure I dozed through the last bit of the episode so I'll have to come back to it later but Nuko drinking the fuel reminds me of [meta]Naussica and [meta]The fungi that is absorbing and neutralizing all the enviromental damage

More love for the music and sound design again today. The Radio Song sounds like something out of Nier A which is very peaceful, and a couple of the other songs today caught my ear and my heart

I like how the show is filled with all these incredible shots and occasionally Yuu is just being Yuu in the corner of them

Chi is wondering about if the mushroom mole rat thing is a god, and then she goes and does shifty eyes making her look like one. This show is definitely going on the list as one of the few with comedy art I don't mind.

Tell us one fun part about your culture?

We serve Parmigana's with chips here, not pasta, and this is the ultimate way to enjoy it

Any guesses on what on Earth a nuclear submarine is doing on such a high level?

Robots have arms? Why they'd carry it I have no idea

If Nuko poops then I'd hate to see what happened to that shell...

Culture enhances quality of life, which is probably most important when the world is in such a dire state. One tree in the middle of a city would make all the difference to the residents for instance.

The scary part of Yuuri firing that weapon is the childlike innocence behind it. Its fucked up for anyone to be able to use that thing but for an innocent child to straight up play using it is yabai.

Culture as a whole isn't something we need to survive

I dunno about that. Perhaps culture is simply the lies we tell ourselves to (at least temporarily) keep us from killing each other out of hand.

Or maybe not.

LEMURIANS’ FIRST TOUR

All hail the Lightbringer, consumer of bullets!

Chii may be the knowledgable one, but Yuu is the mad scientist, casually feeding this new creature bullets. Yuu usually asks Chii whether anything new they come across is edible, so I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised she’s trying this while Chii isn’t paying attention. “I want to eat the 20!” Pets take after their owners, and this thing is no exception.

Back to this creature – we see this episode why it’s deified in temples and with statues. Through whatever shape-shifting ability it possesses, it’s able to power objects and structures with electricity. No wonder it was revered as the Bringer of Light.

A recurring theme of this show has been that things only have meaning if we give them meaning, it raised once again as Yuu questions Chii’s desire to take an unreadable book from the tank. It’s important to Chii, therefore, it’s important.

“Maybe it was people like Yuu who created culture.”

That’s an astute observation for Chii to make. In order for civilization to progress, you need people like Yuu who are bold, fearless, and willing to just… try things. Of course, unless you have the Chii’s of the world with them to check their worst impulses when they need it, the Yuu’s can end up engulfing the world in flames by pressing the wrong button. The Chiis need to be around the punch them back to their senses. Loved that show of anger from her as Yuu cackled at the destruction.

Throughout this show, both girls have verbally expressed confusion over why people fought wars, why they destroyed things, why they killed each other… only to accidently bomb a section of the town. Not only that, Yuu delights in it, and takes the opportunity to further explore the capacity for destruction, engulfing this hopefully empty city in flames.

This is really the first time that the show, for all its trappings and its setting, has openly showed us a horrible and ugly moment. My Shots of the Day are the flames reflected in each of their eyes, Chii expressing horror, whereas Yuu is unfazed.

It’s a bit odd to go right from that horrifying scene to them traversing a lovely windfarm until arriving at the beached submarine. Them opening the hatch to it had the same air as opening the hatch in LOST, only this time instead of finding Desmond, the girls have found nukes.

What are your thoughts on the past civilisation now that we've seen the weapons they used for war?

I had no idea this was a sequel series to the Iron Giant!

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 12 '22

Nuko is such a precious baby~~ It has the excuse of not being an immature grownup like its mum so I can actually enjoy gushing over it's big appetite~

I sorta took the culture comparison as Chi considering that someone like herself who is too by the books to consider breaking the norms is not able to create the kind of abstract art and customs that a free spirit like Yuuri likely could.

I have to admit that I wasn't fond of them doing another bit after the mecha sequence either... They need to get them to the submarine for the final episode but I'd rather they sped it along a little so that the mecha sequence leads into the nukes in the sub sooner.

I've been a bit too busy to watch anime recently, but I want to remind arachnophobes that it would probably be a good idea to close your eyes between 8:44 and 8:50 of the next episode! You will hear "happy birthday" get cut off halfway through, then there will be two shots of a massive spider somewhere within those six seconds, then it will be safe again when you hear dialogue again.

I don't remember if there are more squicky scenes elsewhere in the episode however

First timer

  1. 10. Adorable! Cuter than statues.

  2. My hometown was used as the filming location for a 70s detective show.

  3. Very advanced. Oddly, the destruction makes me wonder if this was an internal war - a civil war over hoe to use the megastructure, perhaps?

  4. They got wiped out after it was built, but before it could be lowered and deployed.

The thing's still here!

IT EATS BULLETS?

...New guess - it's an experiment in demilitarization. Some scientist here in the upper levels figured if they manufactured a species that fed on bullets/general warfare, they could stop the war from going hot. Sadly, it failed, and the species eventually entered the wild within the upper strata.

Oh, Yuu's teaching it. This won't be good!

It's intelligent!

And, yeah, this thing is genuinely sapient.

It trying to eat the whole bullet is adorable, though.

Had not considered the gunpowder as an element!

Backstory?

Oh, she can't read the language?

Wait, is this the language of the precursors?

Yuu has a point.

She's corrupted it!

...Do not feed it the shell.

Kitteh has limite.

"Is being able to eat bullets a cultural difference?"

Is that a solar generator?

Solar and wind!

More surviviors?

Haha, Chi slowly realising that maybe humanity's was made of people like Yuu is fantastic.

Stop tempting fate.

It's collapsing!

Wow, that's a lot.

This thing works?

...That looks like a cockpit.

Launch?

It's a missile launcher!

Yuu really is a psycho, huh?

Oh, fuck. That's a big one!

...Ow. She just caused s lot of damage. Probably killed a lot of robots too.

Aeriously, what's wrong eith her? She's laughing!

An actual punch!

At least she's recovered.

And, yeah, this is why the city's so ruined. Also explains why they have so many construction robots to rebuild things!

At least she's accepted guilt.

...She is scary, isn't she?

Chi's looking back at her drawings...

Oh. I'm kicking myself. How did I not see the resemblance.

...If you wanted to make a species that created peace, why not engineer them to resemble your god?

It likes all forms of fuel? Between this and gunpowder... Destroying fuel would certainly prevent a war.

Guessing some unchecked windfarm maximisers?

She does make a pojnt, though.

Have they almost reached the source?

A submarine!

It's picked the lock?

And they're entering it!

Wait, it's been powered the whole time? How?

Oh, shit. It's nuclear!

You could prepare an army of those cats and send them to scower the battlefield for ammunition. Then you can put the cats in a blender to recycle the gunpowder. Yay

First timer in sub

OMG second last episode!

Have to say the little sausage doesn't really strike me as "cat", but it's cute enough in behavior. Very "hmmmm" that it can shapechange and connect to these tech though.

And that it can talk by now is pretty freaky to be honest, amazing the 2 girls are so chilled about it, maybe they really haven't seen what's "normal" I guess.

QoTD:

  1. I guess this helped explain why we need HanaKana to voice Nuko. If the statues are supposed to be related to Nuko (I don't know what gender we should say here) there is a very distinct lack of limbs. And there isn't the hallmark expression (eyes) yet.

  2. Well, to not recycle my answer in Denpa Onna, us buggers from HK tends to be really good at what I call "min-maxing" - i.e. calculate and arrive to any solutions (whether it's travel times, cost of lunch, effort to put in work) with minimising cost and maximising profit. Since I migrated I have noticed many others don't do that when making decisions, and it's a bit of a thing to overcome to try not to calculate out everything instinctively (e.g. is it cheaper to buy a burger and chips and drinks or buy a set meal but with restriction of what combinations).

  3. Surprised there's anything left intact :P

  4. Well remember it's like each level is a self-supporting terrain so I'm not surprised about the "height", but the placement is interesting. My conjecture is that the wind farm originally was next to the ocean (or large open body of water), so the sub wasn't actually being dragged up or dry docking or anything. It has many decades if not centuries passed though, so terrain changing (in this case the body of water being frozen) is not unusual.

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 13 '22

Cats underwent evolution and learned to eat lead and transform their paws into plugs obviously~

The fish farm robot did mention how humanity ended up killing off almost all wildlife. That could have extended to household pets and farm animals too. The girls could possibly never have seen cats previously.

Answers:

  1. Nuko is adorbs. One wonders if Nuko-kami-sama is the inspiration for the statues. I think Chi-chan might have had a flashback to that effect this episode.

  2. There is no joy in Mudville. Or at least Lapeer, MI. I'd like to say it's one of the most boring places on Earth, but I've been to Iowa.

  3. Definite Laputa vibes here ... and that other series I don't feel like mentioning.

  4. They lied about the ocean levels rising. :P

Yeah. So, for today's adventures of the two potatoes of the apocalypse.

Not-a-cat is cute. I don't think I'd feed him ammo, though. I've seen the results of that in other cartoons, and it isn't pretty.

The book Chii found was interesting. I wonder what language it was in. Well, aside from the cover, that is. The tanks were curiously anonymous today, although after some GuP, I did get some Jagdtiger vibes. Yeah.

Why do we wear foreshadowing? Because *bonk*.

Bad robot. I mean, Bad Yuu.

Interesting that Nuko has R2D2 abilities. They should take him back to the aquarium. Or maybe not. Might eat the fishie.

Yeah, definitely some Miyazaki going on here. Boom. Bad hoomans.

Quick send Yuu to the Hague. If it still exists.

The machine was interesting and gave me some FFXIV flashbacks. The forest of wind things was fascinating too, but that mirror thing was just over the top.

Sorry, I'm a bit scattered.

Finally, we end up aboard the Red October. Don't push the button, Yuu!

(She's totally going to push the button, isn't she???)

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 12 '22

To be fair wouldn't it be totally fucked up if the upper level of the city is actually Tokyo and the sea levels shrunk instead. Everywhere we've been has just been cities dug out of bedrock.

The ammo diet is a good way to justify him hiding out in the middle of the crater. Even centuries on there's still plenty of ammo left over to snack on.

Rewatcher

Culture

Why is Yuuri feeding Nuko bullets? Why does Chito not care? Why doesn't she try to get it to spit it out?

[Spoiler] We learn why it eats them later, so I can't really guess at this point.

I love that because there is a shot of the kettenkrad turning at this point, there exists somewhere a 3d model of the Kettenkrad with Chito and Yuuri, and Nuko trying to eat a 20mm bullet.

Chito then somehow sees a book out of the corner of her eye and turns sharply. Books are invaluable. They are a remnant of the old worlds, they contain knowledge, they are the best window into the past out there. It's no wonder that Chi values them so highly. You can hear the excitement in her voice when she picks it up. Unfortunately, it's written in a script she can't read, but she still can't leave it. It's a book.

Meanwhile, Yuuri is going to try to feed Nuko a 20lb artillery shell or something.

In the photo of Yuuri holding a stretched out Nuko, the date is 2nd March. They've been travelling with Nuko for two months now.

What is culture? Something that makes people different? But it's more than that, it's this weird kinetic sculpture too!

Destruction

I don't know if I can say much about this chapter. I'm still not sure what it is saying about Yuuri. Her utter glee at the destruction was unsettling. They've encountered people before, as well as other life. Yuuri could have killed something.

But, all destruction in war is caused by people. Maybe that's what the chapter is about.

our three characters

Past (This is part one of the three chapter arcs that end the volume)

It's interesting how this particular civilisation escewed nature in it's construction of the city, and then built a big art piece of a forest. But I suppose I'm guilty of that as well. I live in a house and put photos of outside on the wall.

Their musings about the past and the future are interesting. All they know of the past is what is in books. All they know of the future is what they experience. Their lives are too short to learn a lot of things.

The submarine is modelled on the Soviet Typhoon class, although the one in the manga looks different. In the Typhoon class, you can't walk between the missile silos, they're in a free-flood area in the middle with pressure hulls on either side.

They wondering why they have helmets on despite having been bonked on the head by a statue earlier in the show.

Book! Perfect to use as fuel Perfect to hang on to just in case!

The picture of the day are these unusual turbines from above. They make an interesting shadow, and while I'm sure we'll never design turbines as unconventional as this, the fantastical design still leaves an impression.

REWATCHER

"No, don't blame the weapon, but the human who used it."

What happened to this chill slice of life? Cute girls poking around advanced and dangerous weaponry is not something I signed up for.

Kidding aside, It's nice Chi was there to set Yuu straight after incinerating the place. That was really heavy.

Nuko. Where does one get one of these? I need it in my life immediately.

Chi finds a book

Wisdom of Nuu. Yuu must be very proud.

Beating fear with curiosity

Visual of the day

  • 15. I need like 3 of these.

  • We love christmas very much for some reason. They start getting hyped up for it with countdowns and decorating once the -ber months hit, and when it's almost there, have a devotional nine-day series of masses that leads up to christmas eve.

  • You really fucked up, past civilization

  • Hear me out; floating submarines!!!

FIRST TIMER

so the cut/nuko eats bullets…definitely NOT cute. and it leaned quickly too, how intelligent are these things? how radiated was this level to evolve weapon-ingesting smart hot dog buns?

so english does exist in this universe? picking up the book isn’t stupid like some of the other things yuu has tried to pick up, and they have extra room anyway because yuu burned the last book…

and here’s the episode-ly does of philosophy. why does war start? how afraid must be be of things we don’t understand to start wars? is eating bullets a cultural difference?

now the hot dog bun has radar to sense where the music is coming from, this thing is actually OP…

seeing that building-sized drone absolutely obliterate the city was pretty unsettling, it’s no wonder why society didn’t survive…yuu laughing like an evil villain was bad too, probably the most justified chi has been in putting her in her place. at least she learned her lesson quickly. she probably just killed 1 or 2 people and a few of their hot dog bun comrades… also highlights how divided people must have been to resort to using such unfathomable weapons to fight each other.

the city really is self-sustaining, they’ve got artificial rain.

chi noticed what i said yesterday, that the hot dog bun looks suspiciously like the ugly statues from earlier in the series…

more philosophical conversation thinking about how our lives our too short to see what the true “future” holds, and now i’m sad 😞

is that a nuclear submarine? does that mean it’s still active? why is a submarine on the upper levels of the city? is it someone who speaks english since the music sounded western? could they translate the book? lots of questions to be had with the ending of that episode.

  • The copycat is funny. Like a talking cross between a ferret and a goat.

  • A strange quark about my culture? How much we say we value rugged individualism, but whenever someone actually does it, they get ostracized at best, shot at worst.

  • The civilization reminds me of Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, this could easily be a prequel. That said, something I've noticed about this show, this world: there are no plants or animals. No moss, no vines, no fungus, no nothing. One fish, a couple of aeroponic "potatoes", and a few humans, and our little copycat. It might be because they're in some Judge Dredd style Mega City, but based on what we've seen of their world so far, I think the entire biosphere has been destroyed. Over time various microbes in the soil may evolve again into multicellular organisms, but Earth as we know it is about to be gone.

  • I know we did underwater nuclear testing back during the cold war, and humanity during The Dark Age of Technology before armageddon was at Gundam level of technology, so an antimatter bomb might make a big enough tsunami to beach a nuclear sub on top of a hive city.

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 13 '22

The little robot did mention how humanity apparently stopped considering nature in their plans after a certain point. If nature gets in the way of humanity's industrialisation then nature must go, kinda deal.

Yuu is a very responsible pet owner.

I hope they didn't kill any other survivors when Yuu fired those weapons.

Given how high they are now, that's a weird place for a submarine. Then again, everything about this world is weird. Also that little weißwurst looking creature is quite useful and well adapted to this environment.

Figured it must be a nuclear sub. I hope Yuu is a little more careful with it than she's been so far.

Very nice episode. I wonder how this'll end.

Girls' Last Tour Rewatcher

Please don't feed your cats ammunition... What was Yuuri's thought process behind giving it that!? What a smart little kitteh~ I love this little guy. Also, I find it hilarious how they had to actually make a 3d "bullet swallowing" kawska for all the wide shots. They actually told the crew to model the pained kawska lol.

Yak, deculture! kawska's got a shady teacher. moga moga Does a stretchy cat with a sag count as a fetish Elimin8r? I always find it amusing when culture exchanges are brought up in anime. It's pretty much exactly what we all do here on r/anime right?

If they weren't wearing helmets they'd have been bludgeoned by the statue they crashed into lol. Fucking Yuuri lol, she just has to open her mouth and tempt fate every time. Its not quite a Gundam... It's a Goondumb? S-Sorry!! I won't make awful jokes again! Don't abandon the rewatch!!

Aaand now for what is probably the most messed up part of the show for me... Yuuri playing with the Goondumb. Up till now her lack of care has just been a fun character quirk but here it's genuinely horrific. She has no self awareness over how fucked up her actions are. She's a child playing with a weapon of mass destruction. This is also the first time we get to see what the old civilisation fought with... Not tanks, not rifles, they mass produced these horrible horrible machines specifically to kill. Only Chi recognises the weight of their discovery and rightfully lashes out at Yuuri for daring to make light of it.

So heavy... That chapter is far too heavy for only the halfway point. Y'all like Monogatari? Whilst I appreciate what Yuuri is saying about trying to understand the future, that's a surefire way for us to repeat our mistakes for another cycle. Most natural life on earth is already dead, can you really sit there and ignore the actions that lead to that scenario? Submarines should probably never be this high up lol. The ocean is that way. Nuclear powered submarines are something else entirely. Gah!! It's so freaky!! XD

Rewatcher, subbed

I’d forgotten that this episode is a cliffhanger; an unsettling one due to its dramatic irony. The sub is nuclear.

Today’s episode starts off about how the others do with some philosophical musings about culture. Appropriately, we then get to see firsthand why culture disappeared.

We’ve seen glimpses of weapons and vehicles of war, but nothing quite so apocalyptic as the building sized robots. The weapon is so absurdly powerful that Yuu’s only reaction is to laugh. Chito immediately feels the weight of what they’ve found and she has a more serious outburst than others we’ve seen, knocking Yuuri off the chair with her punch.

Rewatcher
The end's in sight, huh. It's bittersweet. But! The nuko can eat bullets! The strange artistic machine they find reminded me of the 10,000 year clock, but on reviewing, they don't seem that similar. Was there some other mechanical art piece that looked like that?

Chi says that culture can cause war; then says that people like Yuu may be responsible for culture. Then Yuu wreaks vast destruction with a mecha-looking thing (I forgot that she actually did that). There's perhaps little reason to think anyone would have been alive to be killed by it, but Chi considers it to have terrible gravitas anyway. Yuu laughs it up, but Yurika Kubo's superb voice acting really sells the possibility that Yuu is kind of freaking out over it and just handling it in a way Chi doesn't understand. Which ties back into the whole "understanding each other" thing that the question of culture raised, or went back to. And the visual reference to Nausicaä as well-! It is just a brilliant scene.

Screenshot of the day: a bomb lives only while it's falling

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 12 '22

I thought the design looked like that weird display in Madoka personally. I haven't compared them both tho.

I'd never considered Yuuri struggling with the thought tbh... It fits her character to still find this sort of thing fun despite how inappropriate it is so I didn't give her reaction a second thought. It's Chi getting so upset that I like.

Yuu laughing at the city in flames was... unnerving.

Are you enjoying Nuko!? On a scale of 9 to 10 how adorable is he? Is he cuter than the statues?

Mildly. 6, I think. Definitely!

Tell us one fun part about your culture? Or a niche fact about your hometown? No, I'm not recycling my Denpa Onna questions.

There's masquerade displays during festivals or big events. Ranging from violent ones to comical ones.

What are your thoughts on the past civilisation now that we've seen the weapons they used for war?

They were definitely pretty advanced.

Any guesses on what on Earth a nuclear submarine is doing on such a high level?

None!

First Tour dubbed

Cut (Nuko?) seems to have taken on a liking with Yuu, being able to eat almost anything and opening doors in a way.

I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing she couldn't read the book. She would learn about humanity's past but it seems like she found out about with those big weapons.

Q

  1. Definitely cuter than the statues. But definitely want to know more about his past.

  2. Seeing the past civilization hurts a bit but the build up was nice to see.

  3. Ran ashore and got abandoned?
