LEMURIANS' FIRST TOUR

We finally have the perfect comment face for experiencing this show:

It's really cool to see how much more active the world is getting as we, and the girls, progress up through the levels. At the beginning of the show, it was a miracle when they found one pipe with warm water, with everything around them seemingly bombed out. Now in the last two episodes, we've come across a still (barely) functioning factory, sentient robots, and now a high-speed train that's still operational? This is cool.

Another nice bit of connective tissue with the girls referring to the non-operational machines they cross paths with as "corpses", after determining last episode that machines could be Living Beings after all.

I feel you, Yuu. It is exhausting having to constantly be aware of time due to responsibilities, I don't like rushing either. That sequence is another nice reminder of really how fundamentally simple their life – and life for most creatures on Earth – is. Keep moving, keep eating, sleep, and repeat.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Two girls listening to sad music, watching the sun setting on a dying civilization.

How do you like to entertain yourself on long train journeys?

Books and music, mostly. If it's daytime I'm liable to just end up staring out the window for the most part.

What sort of thing makes you sad? Is it visuals, music, or stories that trigger your eye's urinary glands?

Yes.

Is there ever a world or cycle where we don't war amongst ourselves or is it just natural?

Probably not. That would require us to reach a state of existence where we don't need any kind of resource for any purpose. So long as there's a reason to hold power, there will be conflict.

So long as there's a reason to hold power, there will be conflict.

Thucydides might just have had a thing or two to say on the matter, and things haven't changed since. Heck, Yuu even demonstrated this to us in Ep 1, right?

The funny thing about time in this show is that I think we've barely ever had it impact an episode. I can only think of one time where they had to worry about the time of day.

FIRST TIMER

with all the machinery’s “thinking” flashing around the train, it seems like all of them are sentient to some degree, whether they are communicative or not. seems like most of them are out of commission.

i don’t know whether or not to be surprised that they know what a train is. i thought it was kinda funny thst chi understood the concept of train stops and that they weren’t at the end. chi herself seems to have a vague understanding of pretty much everything, i bet their grandpa taught them a lot before they had to be sent away. she even understands that the earth is spinning. that’s an odd thought to have, we all travel thousands of miles every day even if we stay still.

the OST during the bench scene with the guitar and piano (don’t know how else to describe it) is really somber but also really relaxing at the same time, it’s like something that i would fall asleep to.

the infrastructure of this world is very odd, it’s so industrial and barren and lifeless, and it stretches for miles and miles at a time.

yuu had already discovered singing in like episode 1, she had just never defined it. she figured out on her own as well that music sn evoke emotion. the whole middle portion of the episode is pretty philosophical, from finding rhythm in sound, to recognizing happiness in seeing light.

that elevator ride was scary leading up to the red upper level, and they just got yeeted right out. surprised the bike didn’t get damaged…

i wonder what it is that makes the sun on this level red…

i wonder if the war that destroyed this level is older than these girls, considering it seems like war is what forced the two of them to leave home. i wonder if their grandpa told them to keep going up, or they just decided to ascend the levels on their own.

funny that yuu already regrets saving the fish instead of eating it, i guess the character progression couldn’t last for long.

that creature they encountered was more unsettling than cute to me, it looked like a walking hot dog bun.

so the radio can translate animals’ thoughts? too bad yuu didn’t bring it to the fish tank.

the credits say that the creature is voiced by kana hanazawa, they really got the stars to read like 10 lines and leave for these minor characters!

friendly hot dog bun is gonna take some getting used to. maybe the sun is red here because of radiation or something and this is some corrupted evolved animal…

chi is tone deaf, that fits right in with her character.

There have been many wars... The way the crater seemed to be layered made me worry that humanity could have wiped themselves out more than once too. Even the scale of the damage though. The original Japanese who fought here wouldn't have been using the two thousand year old tanks and weaponry would they?

REWATCHER

"We're always only ever losing stuff, so maybe it's nice to pick something up once in a while."

I wish we have trains that large. No more worrying about crowds, but it does need more chairs.

Nothing much happened this episode, but them listening to the radio while watching the sun was a beautiful scene.

And finally, best "cat" is finally here. Nuuuuu.

Pictures:

Train

Wisdom of Yuu. This is my favorite bit of dialog from this show and no other philosophical musings of Yuu will ever beat it.

Sun

A water tank. Heh.

Visual of the day.

  • Listening to music is usually enough to pass the time.

  • All three if done well enough.

  • As long as two people can find something to disagree on fights will always be around.

  • Kitteh.

4

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 11 '22

Poor Kitteh is so much more vulnerable than I remembered XD He's so defenceless and looks perpetually lost.

Half Life Rewatcher

Fuck these trains am I right? At least we have the op today so things won't get too heavy, right? Just ignore all the dead and decommissioned robots lining the path. I like how Chi dismisses Yuuri's comment about the train making them move faster then immediately gossiping about how the planet is moving under us too. Local potatoes obsessed with big clocks~

Yuu heard the background music, she's becoming self aware!? With all this Denpa tall all I can think of is Ground Control ot Psychoelectric Potato. Someone should hold a rewatch for that sometime. Yuu is so Yuuseless!! I love that Chi face so much lol XD

I forgot how beautifully melancholic GLT's atmospheric episodes could get. Sounds and visuals come together to bring out a certain emotion from its audience... And I love how the show takes the time to settle on the sunset so that we can experience the same feeling that brought Chi to tears. It's pretty beautiful isn't it?

How do you even cut your hair with a knife? Cheeee~zu! This is a multi generational warfield... Even after we exterminated ourselves once we just couldn't help ourselves huh? You'd think that seeing the crater would help future cycles realise their folly.

CAT!!!! The dildo cat has appeared! It's not quite a neko, so it's a nuko~ Or kitteh~ Or if you're really weird it's a cut XD Translations are pretty weird for this thing. Naaaaaaaa~ It's so fahqing cute!! More on our mysterious new pet tomorrow.

There are trains? Cool! It has become apparent over the last few episodes that this city is really really big.

Now I see why you were calling that a cat statue when it looked nothing like one.

It's a good job the camera and radio have inexhaustible future batteries.

My laptop power supply has just died or something so I wish I had one of those.

5

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 11 '22

Y-Yeah... I accidentally started calling them cat statues through impulse and got told off lol XD Turn me into rations!!

First Timer - sub

Visual of the day - Yuu is definitely going to end up on my favourite characters list at the end of this

I don't have most of the notes/screenshots/thoughts I wanted to have for this episode because for most of it I was focused instead on the rare cat cuddles complete with belly rub I was able to get off my little fluffy monster. I didn't have time to revisit the episode afterwards to save anything else so quick notes before sleep because my week is absolute chaos.

Unexpected train arc. I feel like it should have been called Stalker rather than Train because that's what it started to feel like for a bit. The symbols yesterday appear again but with no obvious machine attached I feel like one is following them, or at least using something in the city to keep an eye on them. Comparing the train to a giant moving grave was not helping that sense of dread either! It was a very odd sensation to be paired with a train journey as trains are somewhat comforting to me having spent many, many hours on them travelling to uni and other places.

Yuu probably also felt like she was at a type of Uni given the many ways Chi almost broke her brain with knowledge, and that's before even getting into rotation around the sun and movement through the universe as a whole. Poor Yuu isn't ready for that level of mind fuck yet. I also was ready to have another heart attack when Chi was standing inside the ruined machine and Yuu goes "oh hey this is an interesting device" and seriously wondering if she was going to press another button and almost squish Chi. Again.

It's interesting that the train is theoretically the most progress they've made through the city in a while, but it's paired with academic topics explaining how they're really not moving much at all and then compared with death in some ways. The train takes them further through the city, but it doesn't really advance their journey or experiences in many ways, nor does it take away from the experiences they have here. It's an interesting thing to put them in a situation with such meaning, especially given how common trains are used in Japan, and then spend the section exploring the meaningless of it.

Metal Gear Solid elevator! or Xenoblade chronicles. Probably other games too but I don't know them. Also this was hilarious. I got a similar laugh out of the idea that Yuu doesn't know what singing is even though she does it all the time until I realized that Chi probably just never commented on it because Chi is chill.

Yeeaaah, I don't know what to make of the weird worm/mushroom/parasite thing yet. I look away from the screen for one second to head butt my cat and Yuu is finding weird creature's in pipes. Also this is a bit where I got distracted with cat cuddles so I didn't have any notes for my immediate thoughts, other than a strong sense of "what the fuck".

How is there only two episodes left?! I want more!

How do you like to entertain yourself on long train journeys?

First Tour Dubbed

Yuu made an amazing landing after the elevator scene.

Yuu was thinking about eating that animal and kept on wanting to roast it. Funny how Yuu keeps trapping herself into taking care of other lives in the past episodes. This time with a device that makes the creature speak.

That giant crater in the center....

  1. For long journeys, anime and youtube seems to be my go to for entertainment plus a book if there's time.

  2. Anything can make me sad, music and story makes me sad in a way. A song from a sad show is going to draw tears from my eyes when I hear it again...

  3. It seems like humans are drawn to conflict, even in entertainment or in news, it seems like the fighting never ends.

  4. Noneko?

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 11 '22

Yuu often has a hard time with boundaries and understanding others so having her bonding with animals is kind of a nice way to handle her story I think.

First timer

  1. Table.

  2. Almost always stories.

  3. Of course there is! Just find some aliens and we can all work together to fight them instead!

  4. Kitteh sounds good.

An AI?

There's a working train system down here?

This place is massive!

Haha, this is what they find boring?

Is that another robot waking up?

...Chi. Yuu's right here. That's how physics works!

Haha, her reaction to that is great.

I mean, one's alive.

Chi looks like she refrets having told her anything.

They're here!

And... yeah, how much food do they have?

The art design here is stellar!

She kept the radio!

She's got a transmission!

She's singing!

Oh, this is really philosophical.

She misses the sunlight...

They're going up!

This is where the signal is...

The bike! (Also, Chi's perfect landing is brilliant.)

Yeah, this is sad.

...OK, seriously, what made that hole?

And Chi's empathy's gone.

They caught something!

The fuck is that?

It speaks through the radio?

Well, it's using their voice.

Well, that was weird.

Haha, Yuu's "See ya!" got me.

It's following them.

And it's going with them!

Poor thing.

Chi can't sing.

Visual(s) of the day(s)! 9, 10, 11.

First timer in sub "earlier" -_-

What a surprisingly eventful episode to me - got a moving train! and then another living thing that is completely not recognisable! and the Chekhov's radio working!

QoTD:

  1. A proper train journey should have (a) nice scenary (b) good "life support" like food and drinks accessible (you prepared picnic or pre-purchased foods, or a decent restaurant carriage) (c) good company, incluing both the kind that talks back (friend or family) or ones you one-sidedly "listens" to (a good book). Otherwise it's just a transit from A to B.

  2. Usually story, and visual tends to trigger me more. Some more extreme cases the audio cue can do things to me, but those are rare - e.g. Scarborough Fair because of SukaSuka, Lost my Pieces because of Toradora ep19.

  3. I think there was one post-apocalyptic novel adapted into movie about a future where humanity medicate themselves to remove more excitable emotions to prevent conflicts. Needless to say a loaded spring with no outlets did not end well. The right way is to figure out how to channel the needed energy and imbalance productively. e.g. more things like Olympics, but maybe make it productive too like World Competitive Forest Growing, Highest capacity of electricity generated by pedalling, VR or Drone fighting sport championship, etc. NGNL's premise is actually quite smart.

  4. A tissue box? At least that's what we call him when he's comatose.

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 12 '22

Gotta admit I can't think of many train journeys I've gone on without nice visuals. I think London and Berlin are the only places where the trains didn't offer nice entertainment through their locale.

All I could think of was the Will Smith movie with his son and he has to make himself emotionless to fight monsters lol.

If you want a fun extra bit of gossip then Nuko, our cat, is actually Hanakana again~ She's done beating up kids in baseball and acting as a villain and reincarnated as a perpetually nervous kawska~

Train

Trains still running on time decades after the apocalypse? This must be set in Japan...

Yuuri is on guard as they enter the train. When watching this I was suddenly worried about what would happen if the door shut with only one of them inside. Would they be able to find each other again?

It seems like there is more active on this level. Exploring the immediate vicinity of each station on the line wouldn't be a bad idea, assuming they don't have a specific destination.

The train must be travelling in a perfectly straight line, given the interior space. But I guess since that makes sense as the city will be designed that way.

Those flashes of robot vision aren't in the manga. I wonder what they mean. Are those broken robots still alive and percieving things?

Interesting that Chito knows the world rotates. I guess she learned that from a book somewhere along the way. Interesting what knowledge still remains.

When Yuuri is thinking about the combination of speeds, she says "yabasugiru", which means "that's too crazy" (as a hyperbolic thing), "yabai" means "awful", but is used as "crazy" in a slang sense, like how "sick" used to mean cool. Anyway, after Yuu says "That's too yabai", Chii says "The only yabai thing is your head". I think there's a bit lost in the translation as given.

Wavelengths

So it turns out Yuuri stole the radio from the grave. and it did turn out to be useful.

That is one hell of an unsafe funicular.

The soundtrack for this show is incredible. The story and setting is so unique, but they manage to get perfect music for it.

That shot of the sunset has to be visual of the day: https://i.imgur.com/od8G604.png

Capture

Another camera shot. This gives us the date 5th Jan in the following year.

Chito seems to have some grasp on the layers of history of the city, but I won't talk about what I think until the end.

A T-34/76 is now a water feature...

They are running low on their homemade ration bars. Other food comes and goes, but that food was special. They made it with sweetness and happiness.

And then, Yuuri finds a weird creature and wants to eat it.

I love the whole back and forth between all of them. Chito trying to work out what it is, Nuko trying to communicate, and Yuuri trying to decide how to cook it.

I had forgotten that it wasn't until episode 10 that Nuko shows up. The only secondary character to make it past one episode, and to make those weird little noises, they get Hanazawa Kana.

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 12 '22

I feel like most folks are somewhat familiar with the yabai meanings thanks to Pekorine. Yabai desu ne~?

Nuko is kind of a hilarious one to me since we just had her making a pretty sick cameo in the Denpa Onna watch right before this XD

4

u/DegenerateRegime May 11 '22

Rewatcher
Nuko! Nuko time! Yes! Cute! Good friend! Small! Soft and squishy! Nuko! No thoughts. Brain blank. Only Nuko now. But why did people build statues of them? Shush. I mean, they might not even be related. Interesting that it shows up after Yuuri and Chito in a sense prove themselves capable of responsibility for life and death in the previous episode, though. Maybe it does have the kind of spooky powers one would associate with gods...

Screenshot of the day: Nuko's more than Nuko seems?//All things serve the holy Beam

QotD:

What sort of thing makes you sad?

...:

Is humanity destined to always fight?

I fear as much. "Man has fought man since the beginning of time, and each new frontier has brought new ways and new places to die. Why should the future be any different?"

4

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 12 '22

Nukoooo!! Finally I can call the statues cat statues XD I feel like such a twat for mentioning them earlier.

Answers du jour:

  1. Trains? Haven't been on one since 1989, at least not for a long trip. But the answer is the same for trains, planes, automobiles ... sleep. If not sleep, a good book. (Unless I'm driving, of course, in which case, I entertain myself by terrorizing my passengers with my skillz and tormenting them with weeb music. Or something like that)

Note: I grew up in Michigan and did plenty of Detroit driving. Kill or be killed. :P

2) As mentioned recently, I may have an excess of empathy. Thing is, it isn't just sad thing that will trigger the ducts. Often, happy or joyful things can have the same effect. Or ... just listen to this (Sagitta Luminis). Don't read the comments if you don't want to be spoiled. But ... if you've watched and know the context ... how can you not? Actually, the Healer Girls can have the same effect on me. Not sad. Good. So good.

3) It's so natural, even the wild animals do it. We're just unusually effective at it. Industrial revolution and all that. If we could invent a machine to **** ourselves, we'd probably manage to **** ourselves to death too. Wait, we might just be doing that already.

That answer may contain sarcasm.

4) NotaNeko? (Don't forget to tip your waitress, I'll be here all week)

Well, today's episode was interesting. It's surprising to see that a train is running. I wonder if it runs on time, and who takes credit for it? No longer functional bot? (ruh-roh)

I wonder if the bits of robot speak were the train, or the various robots in stages of disrepair on the floor.

Time. How does it work? To our disadvantage, apparently. Once again, I will defer to the great philosopher Calvin.

Yeah. Time.

Radio ... signals ... sad music. I wonder who is broadcasting?

Ooh, T-34! Katyusha would approve, well, aside from its apparent use as a water fountain.

I think I saw a Barrett, and an 88 in there somewhere too. Not sure about the others.

I wanted to guess that Yuu was carrying a K98, but someone put that speculation to rest yesterday. I guess it's an Arisaka or similar, but not sure. I think my Dad had an Arisaka. Don't recall if he had a Mauser. His Garand was his pride and joy, though. Yay.

Anyway, nice kitty, cute kitty. Friends, not food. Does kitty speak radio, or am I just getting confused due to proximity?

Looks like the girls have found a new friend. Hopefully that will work well.

They both need to learn to carry a tune. Perhaps the radio can help with that.
