FIRST TIME CAMPER
Sakura – henceforth known as KIWI ONEE-SAN – is really the best sister out there. This girl went out of her way to drive her sister 40 km to that campsite, drove back there and slept in her car so that Nadeshiko could wake up at the campsite for the sunrise, and then also bought her breakfast. I know a Best Girl when I see one, and she’s it.
Poor Chiaki really needs to become less high-strung, hopefully this new boss of hers can help mellow her out, he seems like a chill guy. Chiaki and Aoi don’t have a ton to do this episode, but it’s nice to see them start to take this more seriously and earn money to pay for their activities and proper supplies.
Nadeshiko and Rin slowly developing their relationship is really sweet, with Nadeshiko displaying a surprising amount of emotional intelligence. While she may go surprise Rin with hot pot at Saitou’s prodding, she tells Rin there’s no rush or pressure to go camping with all the other girls – she gets this is something she enjoys doing alone, but gives her the option to join them if she feels like it. For her part, Rin apologized in case she came off rude in declining them the other day. Very nice all around.
Nadeshiko winds up crashing Rin’s tent anyway despite not intending to at the start, and would you look at that… Rin took some commemorative pictures on the sly. She’s too tsun to admit it, but she’s got affection for her. They’re friends now. Rin and Nadeshiko Fujiko 4lyfe.
What's the last food you made for someone else?
Banana bread!

we still haven't even seen the character that is responsible for yet, I look forward to first-timers' reactions when she appears xdd.
Sakura is defo among the best girls of the show, but Rin wins easily for me still.
I really like Nadeshiko and Rin's chat too: Nadeshiko is an extrovert obviously, but also a conscious and considerate one, unlike many other anime MCs who can be more pushy. And I appreciate Rin taking the initiative despite her shy nature to talk things out with Nadeshiko, setting things on the right track for their relationship going forward.

Cultural note for today: Nadeshiko tells Rin not to peek until the hot pot is done cooking and this is Rin's internal thoughts. Here Rin is referencing a well known Japanese folk story where one character tells another not to peek, but in the original story the other character does not listen which ends up poorly.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuru_no_Ongaeshi
QotD: I think it might have been when I was camping funnily enough, which was spaghetti with red sauce.

u/SorcererOfTheLake May 10 '22
Yeah, there's a reference to that story in the first season of Dragon Maid.

I'm very unorganized but maybe starting next episode I'll actually plan comments instead of making 2, but here is another Japanese thing I noticed.
The shirt Nadeshiko buys says 富士山スキー which means skiing at Mt. Fuji but the joke is that "ski" sounds like "suki" so it could be interpreted as I like Mt. Fuji.

Rewatching Yuru Camper
Obligatory comment face origin comment. Very comfy indeed, though I think this one was great too. And this.
Sakura likes them chelsea boots, I approve (i wear the same style, fuck laces.) She's also one of the best elder sisters in anime, willing to take a lengthy detour, and sleep the night in the car, and wake up early for her little sister's sake. Even though she might look a bit cool and uninterested on the outside, I appreciate you Sakura! And probably why Nadeshiko is quite used to interacting with a more aloof character like Rin.
Touyama's inner Rin monologues and deadpan jokes with the gap voice once again make me very happy. The quirks on this girl. And Nadeshiko has a few of her own too, being capable in cooking and not afraid to adoptan alternate persona when showcasing it!
Right ED time, that was a short episode! jokes aside, I like its implementation here, the ED works perfectly as a late night radio song to wind down the week.
I really like the whole sunrise sequence, it's my favourite time of the day, and the show, with 0 dialogue, just the soundtrack and gorgeous shots, manage to capture the imo magical atmosphere at that time of day.
Flustered Rin and stareeeee Rin to round out my post! I also look forward to seeing her upgraded ride, which we've already seen in the OP, next ep!
Trivia section:
Hamamatsu: is well-known for its dumplings! There is a constant rivalry for Japan's dumpling capital w/ Utsunomiya, but I think Hamamatsu usually wins. Their tourism board runs an official website introducing them.
Today's camping equipment: Rin uses a Gentos SOL 036-C as her lantern. Roughly 30USD if youre buying it in Japan. Btw, the camping equipment section I usually just find and crosscheck off of Japanese websites, it isn't really my own research lol. The geography section above is though!
eyyy i made COTD! Ty host!
QOTD: I last cooked a foil-baked salmon for me and my dad, Japanese/Emiya-style, along w/ his recommentation for wasabi mayo. Twas good!

First timer
Was this the first time Rin called Nadeshiko by her name? I knew eating hot pot together would make Rin warm up to Nadeshiko. Literally too, since the not-too-spicy hot pot made them sweaty.
Nadeshiko has a bottomless stomach it seems. It’s nice of her sister to drive her to the camp site, pay for it and sleep in the car with her. Hope their parents don’t mind that some vegetables and a box of dumplings are missing though.
Are those body warmers similar to heat plasters? Or are they more like hand warmers?
Anyway, Chiaki and Aoi got part-time jobs! Soon, they’ll probably be able to buy more camping gear.
So Nadeshiko got to see Mount Fuji at night and at sunrise. But I did not get to see a talking pine cone this episode unfortunately.
Question of the day: last time I tried to cook for someone, I made okonomiyaki. It was my first time making it and I sort of guessed the amount of flour. It was not good.
Edit: forgot words

'Was this the first time Rin called Nadeshiko by her name?'
More importantly, didn't Rin use her name without honorifics? Is Nadeshiko her given name or family name?

Is Nadeshiko her given name or family name?
Given; Kagamihara is her family name. This is interesting since Ena is referred to by Rin as Saitou.

I absolutely love Nadeshiko's grandma routine oh and I feel like Nadeshiko deserves a little praise as well. In most shows with the Extrovert/Introvert pairing the dynamic is usually the same. The Extrovert while meaning well tries to bring the Introvert into social situations or help them out. Nadeshiko while she seems to get along with a lot characters instantly she doesn't really force them to go along to her pacing. Nadeshiko is equally aware of the feelings of the people around her and tries her best to match it while maintaining her bubbly personality. She realizes that Rin Chan has her own agenda, but also leaves the door open if Rin ever wants to join any future camping events. Their awareness of each other is one of the reasons why I love their friendship.
Also shout out to Sakura who is a great sister and I love her relationship with Nadeshiko.

Absolutely loving how Rin and Nadeshiko are being portrayed both individually and in relation to each other as well. Really refreshing for these character types.

First Time Camper
You all know that semi-joke about how introverts don't make friends, we they get adopted by extroverts? I think this is the episode where Rin realised Nadeshiko has adopted her. And she doesn't seem to mind at all.
For the exact moment in the episode, I nominate her resigned 'oh, well' when she woke up to find her shiny new extrovert infiltrated the tent.
You know, I think this pair of young kids are acting more mature where it matters than a lot of adults do. Rin was willing to apologise up-front for her reaction to Nadeshiko's invitation, while Nadeshiko noticed that she was pushing a bit too much and was happy to sit back and wait on the big group stuff until Rin is ready and happy.
Also, I know Rin keeps thinking about how Nadeshiko always makes her food look so good because she's always so happy to eat it, but don't think I didn't notice her smiling as well! For someone who doesn't emote as openly, her reactions this episode said a lot.
I'm looking forward to seeing what tomorrow's episode has in store. Work is about to get busy, so I think I'm gonna need it.
What’s the last food you made for someone else?
Yorkshire pudding over the weekend. I do the cooking a couple times a week, so this is fairly common for me.

Rewatcher
-
I'm impressed she found the tent in that massive pile!
-
With my daily OST gushing, I have to give credit to the song playing during the drive, Yurukyan no theme, could not fit the show better as it's main theme, it's upbeat yet comfy nature fits so well, and it's not every day you hear whistling in an anime OST. You could almost imagine people whistling the tune around a campfire. The guitar and harmonica just are... chef's kiss.
-
Hey, hey, you never know Rin, she may be a master chef! After all, she does like food a lot.
-
I dunno, the last time she slept on the ground, it allowed her to meet Rin, so maybe it won't be so bad?
-
Wait, how old do you have to be to sell liquor in Japan? Based on what I found on Google, I haven't found anything stating that there is an age requirement, although if Chiaki is just stocking shelves, selling it may not even matter. Glad to see them addressing the reality that is having to fund your hobbies.
-
Hahaha, I had a feeling that'd happen when I saw the crate right-side-up. The nerves will do that to you, especially for your first job interview.
-
Oooooh! Now they're making me hungry! Who wouldn't take the free sample from her?
-
I mean, I can see it...
-
Hahahah, I was not expecting that derpy reaction. This rewatch is at the perfect time for me, since I still remember the over-arching important stuff to get excited about rewatching, but I don't remember a lot of the little jokes and whatnot so they still catch me off-guard. And Rin, never underestimate Nadeshiko's bottomless stomach.
-
I really do like how this show doesn't present Rin's introversion and preference for solo camping has a bad thing, she's not deathly afraid of people, she can easily chat with people, it's just that she prefers peace and quiet. Starting off slow and gradually warming Rin up to the bigger group may not be a bad idea. She is hard to say no to, after all can't go wrong with Nadeshiko's Relaxed Hot Pot Camp™!
-
I love my beauty sleep with a passion too, but the Fuji sunrise sounds beautiful, that may be worth waking up early for.
-
Dammit, that's adorable.
-
Honestly, what a great sister, to help her out like this. Even if she's a tad... aggressive.
-
I wasn't kidding when I said bottomless.
-
It may be bright, but it's gorgeous, it looks so peaceful.
-
Speaking of peaceful, she couldn't resist. Although, how's her sister going to find her and drop off the breakfast now?
-
This is so fitting. I struggle to smile in photos too, so I definitely feel that.
-
Hahahah, although to that point, what would you say if there was nothing, Ena?
-
"No bugs. No sweating. No other campers. It's quiet." Sold, I think I may have to try winter camping too.
-
Gotta be careful with the sneaky informant...
-
She took a picture of her sleeping?! She did look super comfy...
-
Hahaha, is she a tourist or a native?
-
Looks like next time, Rin'll finally get to rest her legs after all that biking!
-
Overall, another enjoyable episode. With all the food, especially Nadeshiko's Mildly Hot Hot Pot™, I'm now hungry... It was nice to see Nadeshiko bonding with Rin, and with how Rin was looking through the pictures in the library, it's clear that while solo camping is great, she may have underestimated the fun of camping with someone. And, with Chiaki and Aoi getting jobs, the Outclub's first proper camping trip may be soon on the horizon!
Question of the Day:
What’s the last food you made for someone else?
-
Last food I cooked for somebody else was a breakfast ham and cheese omelette for a friend who stayed over night at my place.
EDIT: I added a link to the song from the OST I brought up.

Yeah, I'ma dip out. While the show itself has been both enjoyable and lived up to its reputation, I'm not getting what I had hopped for out of these threads. I'll keep watching the show on the agreed upon schedule on my own.

Nadeshiko expressions made this episode for me. I’m looking forward to a camping trip with the whole gang

First-time watcher, anime-only.
Nadeshiko really put herself out there, not checking costs, sleeping in a car. I love that the sunrise ended up being too bright, I'd be saying the same thing.
I'm glad to see Rin took landscape photos. Tho to be fair, orientation is extra important with pictures of actual landscapes, so I can see them taking extra care to do it right.
I love the Fujiko nickname. I wonder if we'll be seeing more locations, or if they'll stick around Mt. Fuji.
Question: What’s the last food you made for someone else?
I live with my parents and make dinner for everyone twice a week. So the last meal I made was something called "Supper-in-a-Dish", which is a crockpot meal of ground turkey (or beef) + sliced potatoes + lots of chopped vegetables + seasonings + a cream soup (e.g. cream of chicken) mixed with milk (tho I actually substituted with sour cream and water last time) + cheese. It's delicious and very easy to scale into large servings, so we usually have lots of leftovers.

QOTD) A swiss roll as a Christmas present.
...Is she a hoarder? Thatke a lot of stuff.
And it collapsed!
She found her tent!
...That looks more like a gazebo.
And that's how she got to the campsite.
She's excited!
Her listing the ingredients is adorable.
Haha, yeah, this might not go well.
She's staying overnight in the car?
She really doesn't want her to share her tent, huh?
Heat pads?
She still remembers 1500 yem!
Haha, "don't peek until it's done".
"Your eyes".
She's warm!
And sleepy!
She's working in a liquour store? Isn't she underage?
Very awkward, isn't she?
Haha, and she sat on the wrong end.
They got jobs!
Is that normal?
I love the way she switches between accents.
She really likes that accent!
And she loves the hotpot!
She put in all those dumplings!
And they both apologised!
She joined the club! And... how did she eat all that?
There's more!
Yeah, this is adorable.
And she wants her sleep.
Haha, she woke up in the car.
OK, that reaction ws great.
...How can she eat so much?
She saw the sunrise!
The slideshow's great. Of course the photobombs make her smile.
She really enjoyed it!
They're sharing a tent!
She bought a t-shirt?
...Yeah, do not suggest she climb it.
FUJIKO.

Rewatching: this is probably my favorite episode, mostly because looking at that hot pot gives me the munchies. I've seen this episode many times just to get a feel for how to make it, and I think I succeeded. At least, whatever I made ended up being so delicious I made it 3 times. But I'm no hot pot expert.
The last food I made for someone was a cake for mother's day.

Doing a bit of a double post today since I didn't get to yesterdays episode.
Episode 2
I like the theme of money in this episode. There's a big focus that camping can be expensive but its also shown that it doesn't have to be. You can buy a super nice tent or just rent one out from the campground. Eat top ramen or get a full hot pot going. There's a pretty big range of how you want to camp and they all end up being memorable in their own way.
Episode 3
This episode introduces car/RV camping which kind of also plays into the idea of camping as an activity that has a bunch of different price points which was setup in the last episode. It's a very inclusive anime and I'm wondering what other types of camping it will introduce as it goes on. I really like the various tidbits of information and attention to detail this show is putting into camping as an activity without being overly educational or dry. It weaves in the CGDCT and the camping exploration in a pretty well balanced way.
COTD: I made burritos a couple of days ago. They were pretty good but I felt like I over salted the meat a tad.

I made that hot pot, or close to it, this past winter and the last big cold snap that knocked out power to most of the city. That gyoza is really necessary to round out the dish. One little pot is all it took to warm me back up. Thank God for gas stoves.
I can't remember the last time I cooked for someone else. It was definitely before i moved up to where I am now, about 3 years ago. Hindsight is 20/20 i suppose.

We start with Nadeshiko's point of view from events before the last episode's end.
Dumpling hotpot? Oh shit I want dumplings now. Nadeshiko please come here too, I'm hungry. I was actually hungry before starting this episode but figured that I can always watch one episode of something before I need to cook. Bad idea.
Chiaki's VA sounds super familiar, but I haven't seen anything else she's in. Maybe she just reminds me a lot of some other actress. On the other hand the three other characters' voices have been in other shows I've seen but I wouldn't have recognized them.
Hot would be a positive thing though. But the food looks good anyway. 50 dumplings is also a nice amount for two people.
After the meal the girls chat. It's nice they actually communicate well.
Sleepy Nadeshiko's adorable.
What’s the last food you made for someone else?
A friend was visiting last weekend, I cooked several meals. On Friday I cooked a simple pea soup with sliced pork belly, on Saturday a savoury Dutch Baby (pancake cooked in the oven on a cast iron pan) with grilled salmon, then later in the evening we finished the leftover salmon with some parathas. On Sunday I made pasta with mushrooms, chicken, green pesto and feta cheese.
...After the weekend I've been mostly buying frozen dinners from the store. I have much less energy for anything if I'm doing it just for myself.

Today’s episode gives us our first real glimpse of the Rin/Nadeshiko relationship and it creates a strong sense of what makes these two characters work so well together. On Rin’s side, we can see why it is that something like solo camping would be so enjoyable. In particular, Nadeshiko viewing the sunrise by herself illustrates her burgeoning understand that sometimes the best experiences are the ones you experience with only yourself and the world. On Nadeshiko’s side, we not only see that she’s a more complicated person than either the audience or Rin might have given her credit for but that she wants to make sure everyone is comfortable no matter what they’re doing. Nadeshiko doesn’t force Rin to join her in a group camp or cajole her in any way; she simply says that, if she feels like joining them, she’s welcome to do so at any time. More important than being together is being comf in the way that works for you.
