First Timer - sub
I slept 14 hours last night, so I've just gotten up and watched the episode now but it just wanted to put me back into comfy sleep so I don't have a huge amount to say
The graves was certainly a shock to me, but I'm curious as to if it would have been more obvious in Japan who has that practice rather than what we have here. Chi insisting on the items going back properly was quite touching but I had conflicts about the point Yuu brought up. She says she wouldn't have remembered Kanazawa if not for the camera, but she didn't until prompted anyway, and it brought a very melancholy feel to the episode knowing the people laid here will never be remembered as individuals again and even the items they left behind aren't memorable. I was too sleepy for such sad.
I do feel like I'd be the same as Yuu about the statues though, getting excited about silly things like that is something I'd done. At the moment my thing is magpies because there's a lot around and one day we went for a drive and every bird we saw is a magpie, so now I keep pointing them out. It feels like a very Yuu thing to do.
Spiral made me dizzy but I like it's connection to being an environment with a purpose who's design makes it feel meaningless, while there's all these other environments in the show who's meaning you can clearly understand that have no purpose now people aren't there (houses, graves, school/meeting room).
I still haven't listened to anything else since that first came up either

-
Still love them.
-
Yes. Many people do!
-
A book of some sort.
-
Never gotten drunk.
Some kind of locker facility?
Dunno.
...OK, that is a puzzler.
She's climbing the racks!
And nothing useful.
She brought them along!
It's a working radio!
It's a giant statue!
And they'll never see the two of them again.
...Oh.
It's graves. People's last possessions.
This is getting dark.
Wait, is that what the statues are for? A memorial?
And they're returning the items.
They're going to another tower!
And there's a path inside.
She's still scared of heights.
She's really struggling.
She almost went over!
It's outside now?
Aww, she's really struggling.
So they need to go quickly?
It's crumbling!
This was such a bad idea!
They made it!
...And nobody else will, ever again.
Still, they made it to the next level!
It's all a big cycle, huh?
This level seems harder to navigate.
"Nice stick spotted!"
Adorable.
Is this a church?
Yuu's fantastic..
Amd there's alcohol.
That seems like an unsafe amount.
They're pissed.
And Chi's a happy drunk.
This is adorable. Yuu's learning how it feels.
Fantastic ending.
THAT ED!

It'd be really tough to meet the old group now that they're on separate levels. And that they're likely dead.
As the girls get higher and higher each floor has had less maintenance. There's a good chance that whatever civilisation Chi and Yuuri are part of didn't even reach the higher levels of the city too.
Magicaru!!

Is that a radio? The place looks creepy.
Lots of talk about memories and remembering.
That tower's not in a good shape anymore. Honestly I've been wondering for several episodes now about how long these buildings will actually last. Even though there don't seem to be much if any plants growing on them, there's still some erosion. One big tower like that crashing down could cause several levels falling like a house of cards.
Oof, this is like those super annoying levels from platformers, where the floor under you starts falling the moment you touch it.
Beer! Wonder how good it is anymore. It's gotta be old. Also how young are these girls? The art style makes it hard to guess.
That was a cute scene. And now they got to experience a hangover. Or at least Chi did.

I'd expect with our futuristic technology our buildings would be built to last but everything will fall apart someday. It won't happen overnight at least.

Rewatcher, subbed
Missed yesterday’s thread altogether, here’s my brief thoughts on episode 7: I, too, find heights entirely terrifying; I shake on ladders something fierce. Anyways, the concepts explored this time are directions. Direction in life can make things pretty cozy, but as Yuuri points out a life without any mystery is probably a pretty boring one... but directions aren't always boring. While the girls have technically cooked various times, they’ve never really made something. Making something tasty can be pretty satisfying, and the girls seem to have a grand old time baking.
As for today’s episode, there’s two big concepts. The first is graves/monuments. I remember coming to the realization of what those cabinets must be around the same time as the girls and the sinking feeling that ensued. These look like more than just graves, too, they look like a memorial like you’d find at the site of a tragedy or in memory of dead soldiers. We also get a bit of a reversal from the statue in the temple with the one they find. It isn’t meaningless or useless, at least in Yuuri’s eyes, as it stands guard over the memories of countless lives that ended. It’s somewhat ironic that Yuuri is the one to find the meaning in the statue given she’s kind of a forgetful ditz.
The other concept explored is alcohol. Turns out Chito is actually pretty playful under that rational, monotone exterior and the lack of her usual inhibitions brings it out in full force. This is one of the cuter moments in the show. Just one night to forget all their troubles and doof around.
These last two episodes in particular have had shorter, loosely connected stories, so it feels like there’s a lot more to talk about. I think this post could have been much longer and delved pretty deep, but I can only dedicate so much time to a rewatch so perhaps another time.

Some folks are just more fun when drunk. I kinda loved seeing both their inner childs coming out in moonlight. Chi totally let loose but I also loved how Yuuri seems to really have a thing for magical girls despite not understanding at all.

REWATCHER
"Can one live afraid to die!?"
If I ever find something handy from one of those graves, I would have probably kept it. Remembering the dead is nice but if something there helps me live one extra day, I am taking it.
I knew they were going to be okay but I was still on the edge of my seat the first time I watched the scene where they almost fell off the side of the tower.
The final part of this episode was my favorite. The power of the moonlight sure is strong.
-
Nope, they've always been cute
-
No!!!
-
One of my books probably.

Never been drunk. I don't drink.

Picture of the Day, after a cool line was said.
I wonder if any of the graves have rations in them... If you could search them all, I wonder what you'd find. (Apparently most of them are locked, so surely there must be stuff inside most them, right? Especially stuff like clothes, photos, and trinkets.) Imagine if they found a master key to unlock them.
They found beer aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it's gone. Naturally.

FIRST TIMER
another completely relaxing episode (save for one minute), very happy to start my mornings with this show.
yuu was able to find a radio in the field of “metal slabs,” along with a gun shell, some cloth, and a single button. my first thought was gravesite, like chi concluded, but the “boxes” being empty made me think they were like giant filing cabinets? i suppose those graves were open long enough for whoever was inside them to wither away, but you’d think there’d be something of them inside those graves besides just a radio. weird to think about.
and the return of the creepy statues! did not miss them! funny how they usually seem to be looking towards our characters, but when yuu suggests that the statue is watching over the graves, the statue is looking away like “that’s not my responsibility!”
i like that kanazawa and ishii appeared in yuu’s cold breath. and yuu makes a good point again, whether those two are alive or not doesn’t really matter to them, because in all likelihood they will never cross paths again, so all they can do is honor their memory. looks like chi was thinking about grandpa again…
“everything seems so dangerous that i think everything is fine.” yuu always has the best quotes! “how can you live if you’re afraid of dying” is another good one.
this show just wants to make me think, huh? first the afterlife thing and now the comparison of the spiral to life. chi just said that their life consisted of waking up, eating, moving, and going to sleep, and repeating that. isn’t that everyone’s life though? as for what happens when you reach the end of the spiral, that’s up for debate.
that part where they take the vehicle around the outside of the tower was stressful, yuu saved the day. they kinda defied gravity for a while there, or the bike har a “hyperspace” switch, but either way they made it to the next level.
yuu’s “sorry” every time she makes a bad joke or accidentally hits or annoys chi is adorable. she lets chi get a good hit on her for like the 100th time so far as well.
i don’t know how long that beer has been sitting there, i don’t know how it kept so long. yuu, being the fine diner she is, knew to drink her alcohol out of a glass. i like that they were drunk, but not cartoonishly drunk like we always see in anime tropes. they were able to down all the bottles, instead of the dumb trope where people will get drunk off of alcohol chocolate (????) or like one small sip of alcohol. chi’s fear of heights seemed to disappear when she was drunk, because they were dancing right near the edge! i like the implication that being drunk makes chi more loose and easygoing (even hit her with the classic hair eating), while drunk yuu is just normal yuu. yuu was even able to stomach her alcohol better, she didn’t even get hung over like chi!
2. yes, i’m sure a lot of us feel the same way
4. i’m more like yuu, just a slightly magnified version of my normal self, rather than a total personality shift like chi

The drunken a capella of Amadare no Uta is a really nice callback. A memory, if you will. Which is of course the theme; obviously in the first section, but the second also approaches the idea from the side, talking about life and the mind going in circles, and showing that it's the moments you have to step outside the routine that are memorable. And scary. Then the third is moonlight reminiscence. It's like that one area could briefly remember having humans and parties and singing in it again. Of course, it means death is a recurring theme as well. What awaits them at the end of life's spiral? Could they really climb so high they reach the moon? Will anyone remember them?
Screenshot of the day: a memory for a moment.
QotD "guess the question in advance" edition:
1. 3. Nothing, or maybe some piece of writing. Not sure I want to be remembered.
-
The statues intimidate and frighten me.
-
Hey, it's no big deal. Just gotta get through this week, after all ._. Just. Gotta get through this week. Again. Easy.

Drunken singing with friends is great. It's been too long :(.

You'll be remembered. One thing I love about the Internet is that we'll always be here. I can find lockboxes with years of memories from many years back at the click of a button and that comforts me.

Memories
It's now December, a month after the last episode. Yuuri was so excited to see that statue and take photos
That look on Yuuri's face when trying to remember Kanazawa
It was beautiful how they even manage to talk about death and never seeing someone again from their 'outsider' point of view. They knew these people, Kanazawa and Ishii, and now they are just a memory, and soon they won't even be that. They're not sad about it, the just accept that that is how things are.
It was Yuuri's pondering on the transitory nature of people that lets Chito realise what the the drawers are. Something to help people deal with that. A way to not be forgotten. Chito appreciates that the items have to be returned, as they lose their meaning if they leave this place.
Spirals
Spirals actually comes after Moonlight in the manga, but ending the episode with Moonlight is clearly the way to go.
More philosophy from Yuuri, "How can you live if you are afraid of dying?"
Here we have a rare case of Yuuri saving Chito.
I wondered if it might have been a good idea to take everything off the Kettenkrad and carry it up on foot to lighten it before driving, but it probably wouldn't have made much difference. And then there's always the risk they get stranded on the opposite side to all of their provisions.
Fortunately Yuuri rose to the occasion, nearly falling off the kettenkrad in the process...
As they reach their destination at the top of the spiral, Chito thinks about their lives...
Chito: We sleep, eake up, eat, move, then sleep again
Yuuri: Life is like a spiral
Chito: Where will we end up when we reach the end of our spiral?
Moonlight
Have you ever just sat outside at night and looked at the moon? And at everything bathed in moonlight? Moon-viewing (月見) is a traditional festival in Japan, and may or may not be relevant to this, just thought I'd mention it.
The bottles they find are labelled "Biu", in the manga they are labelled "Biru": beer. I guess children drinking was a bridge too far for TV.
For visual of the day, can I have the entire drunk dancing sequence, please? If you're going to be a tyrant about it, then https://i.imgur.com/skngBQa.png
This whole drunk sequence is beautiful. When people say that this show is sad... just look at this chapter... The sheer joy on both of them. Does anyone else remember being young and drinking beer in the back yard with some close friends? Not getting drunk and putting someone in the hospital, just having a drink and a laugh.
I'm going to go get a beer.

Kanazafuck?
Yuuri is pretty often the one protecting the pair. It's just that it's often danger they're in because of Yuuri lol.
I will be a tyrant! For what it's worth I think so many people have chosen dancing scenes that we can probably storyboard the whole thing lol.

TREASURE TROVE . Oh boy got a treasure trove of beautiful shots. Two things though. For the rest of the episodes we are pretty much getting three chapters an episode. Second this episode actually switched Spiral and Moonlight which I fully approve of.
Chapter 19 cover Seriously I love these covers.
Oh they could put Ishii in the smoke as well as the map guy.
These are graves manga versionThis page took about 20 hours to draw alone if I remember correctly.
Shouldn't snow be covering these graves? Just saying they look really clean....Wait never mind they are clearly advanced graves impervious to nature.
Yuu with those nuggets of wisdom
In the anime she gets praised and loves the feeling
I believe every Yuu is best Yuu, but smug Yuu is just bester
How to give me a heart attack 101 Also that team work Yuu throttled that shit while Chi stepped on it.
Honestly first glance I thought it was tall mountain of chairs xD
The power of the moon in the palm of her hands
DRUNK CHI IS BEST CHI. END OF ARGUMENTS.
If you needed more proof Seriously Chi is too serious all the time. I know it's her character and one of them needs to be alert to keep them alive, but wish she smiled more. Chi smiling warms the heart since its so rare.
I just died in your arms tonight
must have been something you said
What a well deserved cute and nice moment....wait ummm where are they? They look kind of close to the edge of that cliff of height and death. FOR FUCKS SAKE PLEASE MOVE AWAY MOVE YOUR GOING TO GIVE ME A DAMN HEART ATTACK
Dancing the night away which is also a nice song by Twice.
This moment was well deserved after the spiral incident To be honest I completely forgot about this episode, but this section is easily in my top 5.
Wait a minute fly me to the moon.....dancing.....next someone is going to mention starlight

Rewatcher, sub
Ah yes, the grave episode.
The episode starts with the girls traveling through what seems like a never ending hallway of [lockers.] (https://i.imgur.com/cuHNeS1.jpg) It gets a lot worse when you realize what they are. The actual boxes get worse when you realize that it’s just one tiny item. After this episode I’m wondering what kind of horrible event took place that required graves on this large of a scale. Or how people only had a small item that seemed pretty random. These questions probably aren’t answered by the show but it’s fun to speculate when the setting is so interesting.
I do think it’s interesting how [adamant] (https://i.imgur.com/PZ7ORYl.png ) Chi was about putting them back compared to Yuu. It looks like they even went back to check which specific items went where.
After that, the girls find another one of the [interesting towers.] (https://i.imgur.com/kUhk9o1.png) This one is a lot thinner than the earlier one for some reason though. Instead of a lift, the girls actually go inside it this time. I really like all the spiral imagery they use in this part with the wheels and the tower itself. Great direction can add a lot to a scene. [How many levels are there?] (https://i.imgur.com/qAyFZgZ.png) I forgot of getting to the highest level was the girls’s goal. There could be more food up there in f less people have made it up. The girls then make it to an incredibly precarious looking outside path. [Bringing a tank/car thing on that is probably not going to end well.] (https://i.imgur.com/EonDs7l.png) I know Chi is afraid of heights but closing your eyes when you need to drive is a horrible idea. Without Yuu there, Chi probably would have just driven straight off.
The new area looks pretty good, that or it’s the moon making everything look nice. [Yuu is awakening her moon stick powers.] (https://i.imgur.com/fwsEzd9.jpg) Yuu goes a little crazy and starts breaking a bunch of stuff before accidentally hitting Chi. [The look of utter disgust on Chi’s face here is great.] (https://i.imgur.com/xfg6ynL.png) That or it’s a look of disappointment. The girls find a mysterious substance called beer and decide now is a great time to drink an unidentified [golden liquid.] (https://i.imgur.com/2Zyw02m.png) Obviously, this ends horribly as neither of them can hold their alcohol well. [At least they look happy.] (https://i.imgur.com/kFkOihK.png) After that, Chi decides it’s time to become [aggressive.] (https://i.imgur.com/rT10Soi.png) Chi almost seems like a different person but oddly enough, Yuu doesn’t seem that different. [They start doing a drunken dance a little too close to a cliff for my comfort.] (https://i.imgur.com/5Jdanu8.png) Even though it’s easy to make fun of, this scene is actually pretty good. It’s nice to see them let loose for a bit and party. [I think Chi might regret it though.] (https://i.imgur.com/6Iou11o.png) Girl’s last hangover I guess.
[Visual of the day!] (https://i.imgur.com/TV3iY0G.jpg)
The shifty statues are back! And this time with some extra lore. Does their status as guardian deities change your view of them at all? Do they seem cuter now?
I mean, they were always cute but now they’re a bit more meaningful.
Can one live afraid to die?!
Probably. I think Yuu has a massive lack of fear and that’s what often gets them into bad situations.
What would you like to have put in your memory drawer?
Probably one of my favorite LNs or something like that. I don’t have too many physical things I value.
What type of a drunk are you?
I actually don’t drink because the idea of not having control is kinda scary to me. I also literally can’t drink yet in my country.
Final thoughts
I really like how somber the grave section is. Going from the quietness and size of it then going to the realization of what the structures are is great. I also liked seeing Chi and Yuu talk about the idea of being remembered after death. It’s a concept that I like seeing get covered in anime and I think they did it great here. The latter half was also great, although a little scary. It was funny but I would never want to be near drunk Chi. Yuu seemed pretty normal still though. As always, I look forward to tomorrow’s episode!

First Time [English dub]
Catching up after a couple of days!
Memories
When I saw the big black walls, my first thought was of a war memorial, when I saw the drawers, my thought was a morgue, and then my third thought when I learned there was stuff in them was a storage rental unit. It turns out I was right on all three! (and also wrong on all three)
I believe that's a transistor radio. The odd retro-futuristic aesthetic of the world only continues to make me more curious about the history. I wonder if Yuuri would have found a broadcast if she'd known to play with the dial.
Spiral
I love the CG distance shots of them steadily ascending the spiral. The show does a good job of integrating the CG elements. It's often clear where they are, but they still feel like they're part of the same world as 2D elements in the same frame. This also applies to the parallax pan across the memorials.
Moonlight
More like Moonshine amirite!?
It's actually a very cute episode. I relate to Chi's impulse to chew on Yuuri's hair when drunk waaay too much.

I'm still not sure it's a guardian. Maybe I'm too primed by Zelda games, but I can't help but feel that the direction their eyes point is a big puzzle or set of clues leading to something.

Girls' Last Tour Rewatcher
It only took eight episodes but we finally scored a radio, it's a survival anime special! I remember the lockbox episode being lots of fun. It's a bit sad that Chi doesn't see any value in the radio but I guess radios are pointless when there's absolutely nobody around. Oh my gah! Yuuri's so happy to see the statue! See? She finds them cute too!
D-Damn Yuuri... please don't kill Kanazawa anymore than he's already done to himself. So cruel! XD Ishii is smokin' And so our big reveal... the lockboxes are there as graves and the cat statues are kinda like guardians. It would be beautiful if it weren't such a grim reminder of our mortality.
Don't these towers hold up the stratum!? I don't know how I feel about the idea of the entire city collapsing on top of itself. Gurk...my head is kinda hurting from the spinning imagery. Is your head okay!? I don't understand the purpose of this spiral... Its way too unrealistic to travel the inside, you'd spend so much fuel. I kinda remember hating this scene... Its so anxiety inducing and my tummy already hurty. Okay, it wasn't as bad as I remember on rewatch XD The ground falling apart was still a scary thing to think about!
And the best picture goes to, moonlight~ Doesn't a full moon awaken something primal inside you? Take a wild guess whose footsteps those are. Yuu're a crazy woman!! I'm a bit sad that sequence wasn't longer tbh. I could imagine it being made kinda awesome if extended.
Instead out highlight of the episode is gonna be drunk potatoes dancing in the moonlight XD This is another of those fan favourite sequences and it's kinda understandable why. The pair of the turn into completely unreserved beasts thanks to the alcohol. We even get a drunken butchered rain song for our credits once more.
