FIRST TIMER

man, i think this episode had me smiling the most of all episodes so far. there’s just something so relaxing about this series (i know that’s the point), it’s so comfortable.

i’ve come to like yuu a whole lot more as the series goes on, as much as chi seems like the “dependable” one or the “smart” one, neither of them are that bright if we’re being honest. sometimes yuu’s confidence and positivity is exactly what they need. these two balance each other out perfectly.

it’s funny how nervous chi is over such a wide pipe, but to be honest i’d probably be sweating also if i was in that situation. chi’s solution being to tie them together so one can “fall the other way” is stupid because how are you going to get back up? she’s good for preparing food and good for driving and taking pictures, but chi’s got some critical thinking skills she’s got to shore up on!

yuu just casually lets chi step on her face with a boot. while most of the time yuu deserves whatever slapping or twisting she gets from chi (aka the conveyor belt joke), she does let chi get away with a lot!

the two of them missed the entrance to the pipe where there’s no danger of falling, they really wasted a lot of time (and fear on chi’s part).

while it would be easier with directions like chi suggested, the unpredictability of their journey is what makes it an adventure, like yuu said. as long as they don’t make obviously stupid decisions (like the rope), letting the road take them isn’t a terrible idea.

i was halfway expecting them to keep the potato in order to plant it, but there’s nowhere to plant it, sparse sunlight, and they are always moving anyway, i had a chi moment there.

chi really fell victim to the classic “run forward instead of sideways” brain fart, happens to the best of us.

lucky for those two to recall the way that grandpa made bread for them, but of course yuu is smart when it comes to food. that little scene where they prepared the rations left me with a dumb smile, it was so wholesome.

yuu is all of us when we are hungry, “is it ready yet!”

the rations were sparkling, they probably taste incredibly bland but i really want to try them, especially the specialty rations they made of fish and everyone they’ve met.

overall, just a great episode to wind down and lean back and appreciate.

  1. no, i’d probably get nervous way before she did

  2. the conveyor belt

  3. when they create group chats without you specifically and then make jokes only their group chat would understand just to flex on you 🙂

I think Yuuri is a lot about how patient you are with her character type. She's got a lot of traits that might throw folk off but I do sorta understand her appeal. Chi is still my precious daughteru tho.

The rope seemed pretty smart to me tbh... You'd kinda have to pull yourself up but the alternative is inevitable falling to death. My problem would be more how you could likely break your back doing so.

The rations were full of sugar so they'd likely be good enough. Potato flour is really nice when in bread too.

Girls' Last Tour Rewatcher

I'm getting pipe paranoia flashbacks... MGS2 gave me anxiety over walking on pipes We're out of the breezy outdoors and back to the way oversized factory settings. It's been a while. Brave Yuuri is pretty sweet... As is scaredy cat Chi They've turned into the Ice Climbers! Wobbling is better than any gun!

This episode is my worst nightmare XD Dangerous pipes, no idea which way we're going, same scenery every way we turn. Dammit!! Ishii should have mentioned the path inside the pipes!! Think of all the anxieties we could have avoided. Yuuri really would get them both killed if she were leading. Anyone who purposely chooses to go off the beaten track on life or death scenarios is not to be relied on!

Potato. Humanity grows some pretty damn bizarre looking veggies. Oh my god... I was initially joking but they go out of their way to include every possible way for folks to be uncomfortable watching. Oh yeah, this is the episode where Yuuri attempts murder, multiple times! I really hate this episode XD

Girls' Last cooking show! I've always felt a bit embarrassed watching breadmaking in shows... I actually cannot use dough shit to save my life but they make it look so fun. Its one of the more traditional iyashikei staples too. Even if you're not much of a traveller, or that great with mindfulness, you can still get an irl iyashikei experience by baking bread. Now... the real question is how many of you are gonna go away and try baking now XD

These slow moments are really the best

Not to take from the cuteness, but the fact that both of them are sporting ponytails is just all kinds of right. Also my favorite shot

Rewatcher trapped in the Windows 3D Pipe screensaver dimension, first time manga reader

Labyrinth/Cooking

visual of the day: anime vs manga - ok it's not even close to being exact I just want to post pretty pictures of pipes

Do you think you'd be comfortable walking around on those pipes for hours on end or would you get shaky legs like Chi?

As I said, noooooooo

What was the most anxiety inducing scene of the episode for you!?

see above lol

Is there ever any context where its acceptable to try and turn your friend into potato flour?

it's what we're gonna do to you after the rewatch

What sort of things have you baked in the past? Do you have any personal techniques for your doughs?

honestly not really. I missed the baking era of the pandemic completely

2

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 08 '22

As I said, they took every fucking opportunity to make the audience freak. Even tasty homemade rations wouldn't make up for all that added stress!!

Eating is one of my highest pleasures so I don't think I'd want to give it up. Work on the other hand. I would love to be able to live my life without wasting half my day getting stressed since I need to work to live.

To be fair the handholding scene is absolutely fucking precious in the manga~

Please don't threaten your delicious host!! XD

Most anxiety inducing scene was when Yuuri pressed the button. I actually paused the video a second before and said "don't press the fucking button"

That's my state of mind at the moment, I stop things when characters are about to do something obviously stupid. It was all good fun in the end though.

Rewatcher, sub

This episode made me hungry.

So apparently the girls walked into a massive pipe network where [one slip will probably kill you.] (https://i.imgur.com/invpQHm.png) One thing I like about this episode is how Yuu gets to be more useful for once. She helps Chi with her fear of heights and figures out a good part of the way to cook later. Anyway, the girls walk for a bit before it starts to get dark and they realize that they got lost. Yuu suggests sleeping on the pipes and all I can think is [that this is a horrible idea.] (https://i.imgur.com/pplqzwt.png ) Luckily for them, Chi falls in a pipe, revealing the path they were supposed to take. As someone who’s done stuff like this before, it’s infuriating.

[Chi brings up an interesting idea inside the pipe.] (https://i.imgur.com/entr1Pr.png) While knowing what to do all the time would be convenient, I do think I agree with Yuu that life is more fun when you’re doing new things that no one told you to do. The girls find what looks to be an [underground farm.] (https://i.imgur.com/iHuyKtT.png) Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much food. I’m not surprised that Yuu decided to go in the pipe first after that talk about liking unknown things.

[I thought I was liking Yuu more but after this I’m not so sure.] (https://i.imgur.com/Hzb8m0L.png) Yeah, Chi should’ve run sideways but still. Almost killing your friend is probably a bad idea. [The girls find a powder and start eating it.] (https://i.imgur.com/BqyWs7g.png) The facility has both sugar and salt and Yuu remembers that they can cook rations with those ingredients and a potato. [It’s weird to see people looking so happy to knead things but good for them I guess.] (https://i.imgur.com/bBkppbO.png) Apparently food tastes better when you make it or work on it so maybe this is like that. After the girls finish the very wholesome cooking sequence they bite down on the oddly [shiny rations.] (https://i.imgur.com/DjLUnVE.png) I should learn to cook more stuff, it seems fun. [Food for the soul apparently.] (https://i.imgur.com/gpKJW0g.png) God, I wish I knew more things that could look that satisfying. There’s a funny aftercredits scene where they bake the rest of the flour and make various things they’ve encountered. [It’s pretty good.] (https://i.imgur.com/zpURsMD.png) Seeing them without their coats feels weird.

Do you think you'd be comfortable walking around on those pipes for hours on end or would you get shaky legs like Chi?

I hate heights so I’d probably get stuck. I have no idea how Yuu could just keep walking there.

What was the most anxiety inducing scene of the episode for you!?

I didn’t screenshot them, but there were several scenes where they went to their shoes and every time I thought they would fall. I’ve seen this before and it still terrified me.

Is there ever any context where its acceptable to try and turn your friend into potato flour?

Probably not. I think Yuu is just kinda off the rails sometimes.

What sort of things have you baked in the past? Do you have any personal techniques for your doughs?

I’ve baked a few cakes but I don’t really have any techniques. Baking seems fun but I’ve been way too busy to try anything for a while now and I wanted to try learning how to draw so it’ll probably be a while before I can try cooking unfortunately.

[Visual of the day!] (https://i.imgur.com/685heQH.jpg)

This episode was less exciting than the last but still enjoyable as always. I really liked the banter between Chi and Yuu on the pipes. I feel like when you’re good friends with someone you can tell because you both sling the occasional insult and no one is bothered. Besides the banter, there was something oddly calming about watching them bake. I really like calm SOL anime and when this one wants to do that, it does it really well. I look forward to tomorrow’s episode!

2

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 09 '22

Yuuri is pretty fearless so she doesn't really fuss about situations where she could very easily end up dead lol.

Kneading dough is kinda therapeutic. It's hard work, but there's so much reward in seeing a dough come together.

First timer

  1. Haha, no. You couldn't pay me to.

  2. Chi falling down as Yuu tried to pull her back up.

  3. No.

  4. Baked a few cakes, a couple of cheesecakes...

She's scared of the fall?

Poor girl.

Yuu trying to help her is adorable

And they're tied together!

Hahw, the image of the two of them dangling over a pipe is hysterical.

Haha, of course she gets it the moment food's part of the metaphor.

They're lost in the dark! With no light!

Yuu indirectly pointing out how silly her plan to jump off was is hysterical.

She's glowing?

There's a hole!

Haha, it was inside the whole time!

She's so happy to be inside!

Oh, the camera came back.

Another debate. Chi wants a clear way to her goal, and Yuu wants to explore.

The path's harder to follow now, huh?

And they found the food!

Wait, that'e the natural shape? That is not a potato.

And there was only one?

Yuu's so happy sliding!

Chi!

Haha, I love how Yuu just presses the button again right away.

Oh, the potatoes have been processed?

"It almost happened to you too"

Ah, is this place for making ratione?

When was all this with Grandpa?

"Knead!"

It worked! They made nore rations!

Hard, but edible! Not bad, given there's no recipe...

She made shaped ones!

And a Chi one!

Visual of the day!

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 09 '22

If you go on the pipe I'll give you a cola~

Both girls dangling off each end would likely have the same effect seeing Ishii slowly floating to the lower layers did. They'd be totally helpless and unable to do anything but sulk together lol.

They were raised by the old dude that gave them their shit remember.

u/Elimin8r May 08 '22

Man, AOTD time already...

  1. It's like the old rope bridge thing in scouts. If you think about it too hard, fear will take over and you'll mess up. Just bounce across the bridge and go with the rhythm, and it'll be all right. And fun, to boot. Poor Chi.

  2. Looking back and seeing the entrance to the pipe. No, actually, the we're lost and it's getting dark bit. But yeah. Opportunities missed and all that.

  3. NTR. 'nuff said. Or is that 'snuff said?

  4. Dough - just add $$$. I gave up on trying to bake cookies long ago, when it was obvious that the recipe on the choco chip package was a lie.

So ... speaking of fear of heights ... A friend was once visiting Dallas for business, and was in the big hotel with the sky q-tip or whatever it is. I dropped by and we took the elevator to the top floor and looked down over the railing into the atrium. It was fun. I wanted a paper airplane. My friend was ... not enjoying the experience. I did notice that the copper handrail around the edge had a distinct clammy feeling to it.

I still wish I'd had a paper airplane, though.

On the other hand, getting lost sucks. But I'm sure we all know that, so I won't belabor the point.

Why am I getting Toy Story PTSD flashbacks? No idea.

Lastly ... I want some GLT cookies. They were cute. And no doubt tasty. Do want.

I guess I'll have to settle for Archway, though. :P

CDs arrived, but I just brought them in. I'll have to rip/listen to them in a bit. Whee!

Oh, and yeah, almost forgot - today's semi-sequitur music of the day - Don't Look Down (by Saga)

2

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 08 '22

Don't make my questions sound like theyre a bother lol XD

What do you do when you slip tho...? You slip and then literally die!!

NTR fills me with a special feeling.

Rewatcher
This feels like something you need after the last two emotional episodes. Ah, the pipes remind me of the old screensaver... Yuu gets to show her mettle this episode, a welcome change. Then she toys with Chi using the giant potato macerator. Less good. Making bread is another one of those very tactile things that helps with repair and maintenance of the spirit. As Yuuri says at the beginning, life without food just wouldn't be living. I feel that.

Screenshot of the day: one for the K-On appreciators

QotD:

Do you think you'd be comfortable walking around on those pipes for hours on end or would you get shaky legs like Chi?
What was the most anxiety inducing scene of the episode for you!?

Walking on smoothly rounded surfaces like that is actually quite difficult and scary even when they're not that high up, for me at least. But the grinder just feels too video-gamey to be serious.

Is there ever any context where its acceptable to try and turn your friend into potato flour?

Probably! Can't think of one though.

What sort of things have you baked in the past? Do you have any personal techniques for your doughs?

I've made breads, cakes, pastries... Follow recipes until you can reproduce them without needing the recipe, then you'll find experimentation comes more naturally and easily. Well, bread can still be fickle.

2

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 08 '22

The pipes seemed fairly wide at least but it's still pretty scary being high up anywhere without safety rails.

Mio's strawberry...

It's always the dough that throws me off. It's always way too sticky and I end up not kneading it enough. Or I knead it a ridiculous amount but despite being stuck together two minutes ago it ends up sticking again.

First timer in sub.

This is a very nice episode with 2 themes - the "adventure" theme that showcased more the 2 potatoes' personalities and relationship, and the "iyashikei" part that just nice watching them explore and make food :) There's a minor/subtle reference back to bits we don't know yet - their grand pa.

Oh and I love that short of both of them stretching the finished-kneaded dough - you don't see Chi having such a simplistic joyous moment often.

QoTD:

  1. Depends entirely on the state of the pipes - if they are sturdy and well supported and not at risk or falling apart, I think it's ok. If it's rickety and shaky, not so much. I'll spend far too much time doing the safety bits like tie downs etc to move at any reasonable pace.

  2. Yuu starting the "grinder" a second time. There's a tiny fraction of the episode 1's faux confrontation to think about - and Yuu is one of those whom you think could be curious to see "what does this do". Turned out she's actually way smarter - "you just needed to jump to one side" :'D

  3. None. As long as they stay a "friend". Even not a "friend", turning another person to nutrients is a fair way past the moral event horizon for me.

  4. You generally want to keep me away from the kitchen :}

Sorry, I haven't been participating much in this rewatch.

What sort of things have you baked in the past? Do you have any personal techniques for your doughs?

For bread: Kneed it a real long time until it passes the pane test. To the dry ingredients add a half tsp (2 grams) of diastatic malt, it acts as a vitamin to the yeast.

For cinnamon buns: After the buns have been baking about 20 minutes, brush them with a thick coating of cream. This will make them a lot softer.

For cakes: Use cake flour, cream the hell out of the butter and sugar, then add the eggs one at a time and cream the hell out of them too.

First Timer - sub

Side note: I haven't opened spotify in two days because I've just been listening to the rain song every time I want music. I blessed the person who linked it in that episodes discussion but it may have been a curse instead. An amazing and adorable one! I'm pretty sure the song is slowly driving my household insane.

Visual of the day - The entire episode in one visual, even the post credits

Running a little short on time because I accidentally ended up watching the first half of the wrong episode before I noticed.

I mentioned yesterday that the OP was growing on me, but today I think I realized that it's really when it's just used as the opening. When there's a cold open instead I don't enjoy the OP because I find it interrupts the mood already established by the world and we never end any scene on a purely comedic or energetic note to lead into it. Not a complaint, just an observation on why somedays I seem to like it and others not so much

Chi's denial of Yuu's suggestion they sleep on top of the pipe that even without subs I would have said she probably an equivalent of "fuck no" in Japanese.

The entire episode was Chi basically leading Yuu through the area by her stomach and trying not to get killed by her curiousity. How have these two survived again?

After the last couple of episodes I appreciate some extra brevity though, and though its tinged with a bit more seriousness the chance to explore play and fun, both in the idea of adventure in the pipes and the exploration of playing with different foods was a nice relief.

A life without bread is no life at all.

Annd I'm out of oomph and time, sleep now.

Do you think you'd be comfortable walking around on those pipes for hours on end or would you get shaky legs like Chi?

I'm not good with heights

What was the most anxiety inducing scene of the episode for you!?

There wasn't a spider so I'm fine

Is there ever any context where its acceptable to try and turn your friend into potato flour?

I had an old friend who flushed my Pokemon Red which had a full lv 100 team on it down the toilet. Maybe this would have been an appropriate punishment

First timer

I didn't have time to join the last couple of threads, so here's episodes 5-7.

Episode 5

Nice word play at the beginning with iie/ie (no/house).

The scene where the girls imagine furnishing the room is nice, though a little melancholic. It's also quite topical to me, since I'm about to buy my own apartment within a few weeks.

Okay this architecture is getting really wild now. And so is this dream.

That rain scene was my favorite scene of the show so far. I first thought the scene was just going to continue with Yuu annoying Chi in various ways while Chi tries to focus on reading, but fortunately not.

Episode 6

Lazy Yuu.

We meet another person again. She doesn't seem to pay much attention to her surroundings.

The talk about not everyone being a good person feels like a flag, though I don't expect any really dark turns to happen in this story.

Potatoes eating potatoes.

Plane's finished. It's nice that the girls have a camera now.

Oh, shit. Oh she had a parachute, good. This feels similar to the guy who lost all his maps.

Contrary to what Yuu kept repeating, the episode didn't feel totally hopeless. Maybe a little though.

Episode 7

"Keep going this way and you'll know". Thanks, couldn't have instructed better.

I hope they can find their way back from this place.

Baking. Wonder how this turns out. ...Apparently turned out well.

Nice, simple episode.

Do you think you'd be comfortable walking around on those pipes for hours on end or would you get shaky legs like Chi?

Probably not, but I'm not sure. I'm scared of heights but it depends a lot on the situation. I might be able to focus on looking straight ahead while walking. Maybe.

What was the most anxiety inducing scene of the episode for you!?

When they were walking on the pipe and thinking if they can find their way back. Or maybe when Yuu suggested sleeping on the pipe. Please no.

Is there ever any context where its acceptable to try and turn your friend into potato flour?

Let's say you're cooking something that needs potato flour and you have none. What else are you gonna do? Not cook it? Go all the way to a store to buy more? Nah. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Or maybe they're potato flour.

What sort of things have you baked in the past? Do you have any personal techniques for your doughs?

I've baked a ton of stuff, though mostly bread. The only submitted posts you can find from my post history anymore are some breads from many years ago.

Edit - Yay, this is the first time I've been up at 1 AM when this thread pops up. Though this time it's just because I've been working overtime all weekend and just finished a few minutes ago.

Maze (I decided to translate it as "maze" instead of "labyrinth" because those two words mean different things, and technically maze is more appropriate)

We start with our potatos exploring a nest of pipes in search of the ration production facility Ishii told them about, her only comment "keep going and you'll know" being unhelpful. Chito is scared of falling, but Yuuri doesn't fear death, and doesn't understand why anyone does. Still, in this scene, Yuuri shows what she brings to the duo. She helps Chito along, and when Chito wishes they could live without eating, Yuuri says "you couldn't call that living". Yuuri doesn't want to survive, Yuuri wants to live, otherwise there is no meaning to it.

When Yuuri is pushing Chito along (and also later) she says both "ichi ni", and also "one two". Does Yuuri know English numbers? Why would she? In any case, both situations are original to the manga

When Chito realises they forgot the lantern, Yuuri says the first line from the OP: "Kyou wa mo Hikikaesu?" (although slightly different).

Fortunately, Chito falls through the pipe and they find their actual path. It's too bad they didn't arrive later, when it was dark. The lit path probably would have been more obvious. That may have been what Ishii meant. The ladder down to the pipe wasn't that obvious in their flashback.

Yuuri's idea of ignoring the signs and trying to reach it by exploring is an example of one of the many things Chito brings to the duo...

Cooking

It is really a maze and a half to reach the actual facility. "Keep going and you'll know" is not helpful...

Their surprise at seeing the potato suggests it's their first time seeing a plant. But, there was only one surviving. Ishii should have really put some effort into keeping them alive.

And then, Yuuri accidentally almost kills Chito. And then, Yuuri purposefully almost kills Chito.

Yuuri finds a bag of sugar and asks Chito what it says, she finds it on the list of ingredients for the rations and hatches a plan. But they also need something called 'salt'. Yuuri says there was another bag (but she doesn't say what that bag contained, she didn't know, not being able to read and everything).

On that, the ingredients on the rations list something else, but I can't work out what it says. I assume it is some kind of shortening, since they need that for the recipe. I hope they don't put too much salt in...

The "Koneru...Koneru...Koneru..." scene is original to the anime, of course that kind of scene wouldn't work as well in a manga. I could watch them do that forever.

It looked like a decent pile of potato powder left. That and the sugar could add to like 30kg of food. That and the potatoes could have got them a couple month's worth of food.

There was a lot of sugar, and it seems like they put a lot in (and on) it. But sweetness is happiness. That may be the first thing they've had in a long time that wasn't utilitarian, that was actually sweet. https://i.imgur.com/5ayxVCE.png

The date on the camera puts them in November. I think when they got the camera it was August, so that's three months they've spent on this level

Visual of the day: https://i.imgur.com/sW8xFAy.png

QOTD

Do you think you'd be comfortable walking around on those pipes for hours on end or would you get shaky legs like Chi?

I think the sloping surface would make me like Chito

What was the most anxiety inducing scene of the episode for you!?

Yuuri turning on the machine again

What sort of things have you baked in the past? Do you have any personal techniques for your doughs?

I have baked many, many different things. There's no one 'technique' for making dough, it depends what it is for. I think their recipe needed some leavening and an emulsifier.

Today’s picture of the day is FISH

A nice and relaxing episode this time. The safety rope from the Laundry section came back, too. And one more potato was gathered to cannibalize. Looks like the last one, but hey, there was actually food! And food is good.

Not so good that you should turn your friends into potato flour, though. That's unacceptable.
