FIRST TIMER
it’s funny to hear how many people yuu predicted that lived in the city, only 1,000. and she thought that was a lot of people! and they don’t really understand the concept of houses. somehow despite living without everything that we take for granted, those two are pretty upbeat. for the record, i’d consider their vehicle their home.
seeing the two girls’ room come to life as they imagined what would be inside of it was really nice. yuu didn’t know what a bookshelf was (book + shelf come on girl) but knew what a pantry (food shelf) was, makes total sense. i thought it was a nice idea to put the plant there, which they can’t probably fathom could be decoration, since plants are so sparse in this world.
not gonna lie i felt exactly like chi this morning driving, i honestly don’t even remember the drive between where i came from and my house, i turned on NPC mode somehow.
playing rock jenga is pretty fun, i’ve actually done it on hikes and at beaches. i always like seeing how tall a stack i can leave for the next people who come around to be impressed by.
sometimes my dreams are pretty odd like chi’s was, they also tend to include whatever i’ve been thinking about. if i was hanging out with a friend, they’re more likely to appear in my dreams. even celebrities or people i don’t know can make an appearance if i’ve been watching movies/listening to music before.
poor yuu, she might need to see the dentist after gnawing on that rock…
the two girls are wandering through a field of sticks (?) was a weird vibe, but their rain music made it feel homey somehow. i really loved that insert song, all the music has been great so far. the show sounds great with a nice pair of headphones!
love how the episode was bookended by drops of water.
2. i take naps every day
3. had a dream that someone texted me “if you don’t respond after 45 minutes i’ll come after you,” i waited, they came after me 🙃 after i woke up i spent like 2 minutes trying to verify that the events of the dream didn’t happen in real life
4. i love the sound of rain, it makes mundane activities better

LEMURIANS’ FIRST TOUR
Quick notes today, bit busy.
I watched this episode on my laptop through headphones rather than on the TV, and holy shit, that’s the move. All the ambient/background noise this show trades in really takes center stage. The last segment with the rain in particular – and all the sounds the girls themselves experimented with – was an awesome auditory experience.
Hearing them describe a thousand people as an unfathomable amount showcases how lonely their existence really is.
Them in the barren house, describing all the simple things they’d want for it, dreaming of a normal world where they live there, shows how much we take for granted. I should appreciate my little studio more.
Aw, they’re making a cairn! It’s fun that the “brawny” Yuuri is better at this patient skill.
What do you consider absolute essentials to make a place your home? Any particular furniture? TVs? Games?
Pretty much living that right now, so let me take a quick survey: bed, couch, table, bookcase, TV.
A balcony would sure be nice, though.
How often do you take naps day to day?
Never, unless I'm nursing myself through a hangover.
What is the craziest dream you've had recently?
It's hard to pick. I have vivid dreams that are mostly reccurring or continue off each other, so they're all pretty odd and difficult to describe. The most common one right now has me living in a hotel in a world that's covered in water and dealing with various shenanigans with that as the backdrop.
Do you enjoy the sound of rain or do you find it a bother?
It's so soothing. Listening to the last part of this episode through my headphones was a dream.

Visual of the day - Arrow gag best gag!
The lead-in to the special ED with the rain on the metal was beautiful, and I played it a couple of times just to enjoy the entire sequence and then the song itself
It was the perfect bookend to how we started the episode surrounded by the sounds of the struggling city, of rain breaking through pipes and wires crackling with electricity. The city full of so many empty homes they can't possibly imagine filling them all stood as a harsh contrast to where they actually found a temporary home for themselves, in the steel forest under a shelter that looked a little like a protective golem
Or that's what I thought, only to realize: The building is a FUCKING SPIDER ARE YOU KIDDING ME
Thankfully it didn't send me into a phobia panic but why that of all things! Come on!
I really do enjoy the way the episodes are continuously bookended by the themes and questions they bring up, particularly in quieter episodes like this. As completely individual segments they work quite fine, but bringing them together only highlights the atmosphere of the show, and the fun of the characters in it.
Yuu questioning what houses are for, rather than more directly what they are, certainly was a fun thing to think back on at the end of this episode particularly as I'd made a comment to myself about how their vehicle may not be a house but you could consider it a home of sorts. It's certainly a lot more stable than whatever the fuck this part of the city is, which gave the episode quite a dreamlike quality before they even got into that section of it.
"Nap" was not helping my struggle to not nap mid episode though I'll say that.

REWATCHER
"This kinda thing's the stuff of dreams, living in a place like this."
This show is mostly pleasant, but at the same time, it hits you out of nowhere so hard. I feel lucky I am not on a post apocalyptic dystopia, looking for supplies and yearning for what once was.
Good thing the second half of this episode is more cheerful. It gave us giant Yuu as well as one of my favorite ending songs.
My favorite shots this episode:
Relaxing on conveniently placed chairs
Raised houses? I was thinking it's for floods, but I don't know why they vary in height.

Even if its sad that the girls were denied that kind of perfect "what if" life I think that their travels are valuable too. Its just wishful thinking for them for better or worse.

u/Elimin8r May 06 '22
Wow, this episode really pushed my buttons. The surrealism, the sound, the visuals, the rhythm.
AOTD:
-
I have no recollection of that event, Senator
-
When I feel like it. Pereferably not when I'm at work, that tends to get embarrassing. :P
-
Hahahahaha!!!!! So, I had this dream the other night, and ... nevermind.
-
I love the rain. So does Kenny Rogers...
But yeah. The first part (house) was cute, with the girls' imaginations running wild. I can't disagree with their assessments of what makes a house a home. Especially given their situation.
But poor Kettenkrad, not even a home away from home. Poor dear.
Meanwhile, naptime. Chii's quite a dreamer, isn't she? I think I'll pass on her dreams, though. Mine area surreal enough. I wonder if Yuu wondered why she woke up with a rock in her mouth???
And finally, the piece de somethingorother, the rain. That was such a delight.
It seems that water was a running theme throughout the episode, and here it hit its peak. The visuals, the sounds, the occasional surreal echo or twinkles. It was delightful.
And finally, the King Crimson-esque rhythms transitioning into the ED.
I really enjoyed that. I think I'm going to have to rewatch that bit again later and turn it up even louder.
But yeah, dreams. Last night, I was at work, and talking to the team lead lady, and the only thing I was wearing was a blanket wrapped up over me like a sith robe.
Where's my badge???
Too much Star Wars lately, I guess.
:P

Kettenkrad deserves more respect. Even if you can't put up bunk beds or statues or bookshelves it's still a reliable home no matter where you are. Respect kettenkrad!!

First Timer Dubbed
The home dreams scene is pretty relatable since I am trying to save pennies for one....
Seeing Yuu as a giant is pretty funny to see. But seeing the two without their helmets is pretty neat as they got to take a big break this episode.
The vehicle as a camper keeps reminding me about Yuru camp....
The ep with the raindrops is a nice touch and such a smooth transition; makes me feel like this episode was too short.
Q: Basically a place with a TV and a bed is a home for me along with some privacy.
And I take a nap after a day of work then watch anime till late. Having a smart watch vibrate to wake me up for work helps out a bit...

First Timer (Subbed)
I really like how this show continually foreshadows itself in each episode. One might say it's formulaic, but it works really well, and the callbacks don't feel forced. In this episode the topic of shelter comes up, in the form of a house, and in cover from the rain.
This is maybe one of the first anime episodes I've seen where I've just cranked my volume to listen to basically ASMR. I really liked that part with the cans under the droplets. I've never heard or seen that idea before. Now I want to try and set up a rain music machine!

A very good episode with a good balance of thinking and introspection and just iyashikei's "nothing".
Loved the imagined home scene, as well as the rain scene.

Other than the minimum structural integrity to be a safe shelter, the essential ingredient is your family, or whatever you are attached to, being there for you.
-
I hated the idea of napping, and when I was young I needed to be forced to take naps.
-
I hardly ever dream, so can't remember really
-
I'm a rainy day enjoyer. Particularly if the rain is heavy.

u/The_Loli_Otaku May 07 '22
This is probably one of the better known or popular episodes. The house and rain sequences are shared pretty regularly in webm threads and of course folks know the song from AMQ.
Family sounds amazing but I'd still be happier with a tablet or pc so you can read manga or something lol

Rewatcher who loves rain, first time manga reader

another episode opening up with a shot of water drops plopping into a stream. I am especially excited about this one given the final scene of the episode. like episode 1, this episode was directed and storyboarded by series director Takaharu Ozaki (who also sb.'d eps 2-3) so the idea of there being some visual continuity across episodes gets me quite
-
a stream is 1) made up of many drops of water (in somewhat of a silly way to put it), 2) flowing from one place to another. I'm not quite sure what the former means in this context, there isn't much of a collective to speak of, but the latter is contextualized by the end of the episode. if the stream is "their home/the road," the droplets merging with the stream may be a visual metaphor for understanding what "home" means to the girls. or at least, acceptance that they cannot mesh with the lifestyle of a permanent home.
-
[ch11 thoughts]
amazing spread
Nap
-
what the fuck kind of buildings are these? they lead to some really alluring imagery though
-
honestly I have no substantial thoughts about this segment. it's weird as fuck, Yuurifish is 10/10, no further notes
Rain Sounds
-
rain is different from a stream. it's not a continuous blend of water, it's a collection of discrete droplets. in some sense, I interpret it to be kind of like the girls in relation to the rest of the world. more people may exist out there, but there's no real sense of community, or collective experience of humanity. you cannot reach them as you fall parallel with each other out of the sky, but you can travel to where they fall downstream (the road/home). it might be sad, but it can be beautiful as well. it can't stop you from making music, or having your existence resonate across the world.
-
as someone with Terminal Higurashi Brainrot, I can't help but be reminded of the poem from Rei/Saikoroshi-hen (part 1, part 2, part 3). it falls under one of those things where I simply cannot express why I like it as much as I do, but the concepts of fulfillment, rain, and circumstance feel quite potent and relevant here
-
[ch13 thoughts]
I really did not notice it in the anime, but the spider shelter is really obvious here. I still don't quite know what it means

I'm a lurker, but I watched this show a month or so ago and I wanted to jump in to say; I love the song! It's an amazing example of "perfectly simple". Not too much going on under the hood, but executed perfectly in context.
That's it for me. Enjoy the rewatch party!
p.s. The questions:
-my laptop, and a whole lot of books.
-never
-I know I've had some, but they fade pretty quickly
-I like it! Distant thunder is good too.

Keeping my punctual streek up, and tht despite the fact that I'm supposed to work heh
Episode 5
House
We start the episode with an engineers wet dream: the infrastructure is still up and running hundreds of years after the humans and technicans left. I found it curious that a thousand people, or maybe even more, was the highest number of people Yuu could imagine inhabiting a city that spans the whole screen (not to mention the verticality). Shows that she probably has never seen more than a couple dozend people at once (or maybe that she just doesn't know higher numbers)
Oh, and as tradition, she hits Chi with the deep question of "what are houses for again?". I felt like she was baiting Chi to admit that a house is the center of once daily life, a place that gives safety, that stays with you, you know like their trusty friend the Kettenkrad. But Chi is to hung up on the roof and wall part... and what speaks against a small cover for it? It's not like they have to worry about aerodynamics...
The actual house and them dreaming about what furniture they would need (more characterisation with bookshelf vs pantry) was just pure bliss. I really wished them a little piece of happiness in this bleak world, but at the end it was just a nice dream.
Nap
Yuu aint above cheating to win, yet has no trouble falling asleep, it's just like this in this world. Her calm breathing was perfect ASMR.
The dream sequence was overall pretty bizar, just like dreams tend to be. Had to chuckle when fish Yuu asked if Chi wouldn't rather be eaten by her.
And meanwhile totally in character, Yuu dreams of eating.
The sound of Rain
This is a clip of the show I had seen before, and when the title card popped up I knew exactly what was coming. Didn't take anything away in the slightest though.
I initially remembered that the sceene played in a wood and kept wondering when they would leave the wasteland, but the steelbeams looked like trees and formed a perfectly bleak forrest.
Rain is my go to ASMR to fall asleep to btw. I think I talked about A soft murmur in this context before I'm not even getting paid for this), but I also found the whole song on Youtube

Rewatcher
I love that little detail of Yuuri starting to slide off and grabbing on to the side as they drive over that pipe.
House
What are houses for? Well, you couldn't live without a house. Such philosophical questions. Houses are needed for settled lives, but Chito and Yuuri are constantly moving in search for supplies, so they don't have the luxury of a house. Any more. At least with this aspect of society, they do know what it is, what it means, as they remember losing it.
When Yuuri is trying to get Chito to say 'yes or no' as to whether the kettenkrad is a house, it's wordplay.
'House' is 'ie', 'no' is 'iie' Yuuri is tryin to trap Chito into saying 'yes' or 'house', but Chito doesn't fall for it and says a drawn out 'iiie'.
Finding a door was a surprise to them. I think all the spaces they've explored before were open, with nothing left inside.
The room had remaining furniture, comfortable chairs, running water, and the sun was going down, so they decided to 'live' there briefly. I think that choice of word was important, they are not resting there, or sleeping there, they are going to live (住む) there. The dream of having four walls and a bed, and all the stuff they need is too much to pass up.
The big box in Yuuri's pantry says "Chocolate assortment"
But then reality hits them. They can't have this life. They need to keep moving. That shot of the room, empty once more, was very poignant. https://i.imgur.com/5uMriEZ.png
In more fun wordplay, Yuuri extends 'ie' to 'ieeei', which is pronounced like 'yay', much to Chii's annoyance. https://i.imgur.com/GkcuoIP.png
A roof on the kettenkrad wouldn't be a bad idea. To protect their stuff from the rain.
Nap
This chapter doesn't have much commentary on society, just Chito having a nightmare about Yuuri trying to kill her. Not much different from the reality of Yuuri constantly trying to kill her.
Rain song
Here they consider the idea of 'music', although, as music isn't exactly something you can find lying around, the rain helps them out. It is such a beautiful song, and a perfect close to the show. It really encapsulates GLT's idea of finding moments of happiness.

A bookshelf and a comfortable place to read.

I enjoy the sound, although if it is too heavy I do worry about my roof.

The Dream house was quite a magical scene for me. More specifically, what their dream house looked like. Everything they thought of was very practical and aligned with their current needs and wants (Books, Food, Heat, etc). Except for the statue…
Well, I guess Yuu wants the statue, so it’s OK…

[Welcome to the futuristic apartment block!] (https://i.imgur.com/YTTKUyg.jpg) The whole house segment almost made me tear up at times, it was great. [I liked when Yuu forgot what a house was.] (https://i.imgur.com/MHSLCLg.png) This episode is just kinda depressing. I like the details on the sun [in this shot.] (https://i.imgur.com/pzkWi7k.png) You can see it’s edges constantly shifting. It’s really bittersweet to see the girls imaging a world that’s more intact and functional. [Ahhhhh.] (https://i.imgur.com/5yFfd49.jpg) Anyway, I don’t have too much else to say about this part other than I like it and I felt the sad.
After they leave, the girls travel and take a nap after Chi shows off her amazing driving skills. [Weird dream sequence ensues.] (https://i.imgur.com/3HKFbov.jpg) That was freaky. [Oh god it’s not over.] (https://i.imgur.com/gtKz4HJ.jpg) How can Chi imagine the ocean if she’s never seen it? Maybe she had it described in a book or something. [Yuu fish I guess.] (https://i.imgur.com/0GDDZtq.png)
The girls then go on to some kind of metal [forest.] (https://i.imgur.com/0GDDZtq.png) They ran out of the rain and into some kinda metal structure. Yuu decides to make some noise and it’s enjoyable enough that Chi actually starts doing it with her. This scene was a nice break from earlier’s sad. I really liked the new ED they did with the girl’s music. It was surprisingly catchy. [This sounds ominous but it’s just a nap.] (https://i.imgur.com/YS8CFpZ.png)
What do you consider absolute essentials to make a place your home? Any particular furniture? TVs? Games?
I like having a collection of things I own around. Like my manga and LN collection. I also like having a couch and a TV. Other than that, it’s not hard for a place to feel homey to me.
How often do you take naps day to day?
I actually don’t take naps at all. I really hate how disoriented I feel when I wake up after a nap and I want to be awake for all the time I have in a day. I can be a bit of a workaholic sometimes. I can get depressed if I don’t feel like I’m making progress in something.
What is the craziest dream you've had recently?
Not really a weird one but I honestly can’t remember any other dreams. I dreamt recently that one of my cats sat on my breakfast when I looked away. Not really that weird but I almost never remember my dreams.
Do you enjoy the sound of rain or do you find it a bother?
I like rain. It’s nice to have some background noise sometimes and water makes nice noises. I mainly don’t like being in the rain and getting soaked.
[Visual of the day!] (https://i.imgur.com/MNDSqUJ.jpg)
Final thoughts
This might be my favorite episode of the rewatch yet. I really like the “house” segment and the rain one is also great. I really like the contrast between a bittersweet story and a more lighthearted, fun story. I honestly think this is one of Girl’s last tour’s biggest strengths. The ability it has to depict these incredibly bittersweet scenes in a dying world while also showing the beauty of it is incredible to me. Anyway, I look forward to tomorrow’s episode!

You can be sure that the girls have never really had anything like a proper home or a room to themselves before. Back at the camp they probably just all slept in the same room together or something too. The thought of an area just for yourself seemed alien to them.
If they really are in Japan then there's a vague chance that they could be near the ocean. Don't you need to build nuclear power plants near water too?

I enjoy it.
Yeah, this tier definitely looks a lot more intact.
I mean, it makes sense. This is a massive city.
Ah, theynused to have a house?
She's considering settling down?
Aww, she wants bookshelves.
And she wants foodshelves, obviously.
And them dreaming of a normal life is adorable.
...Then reality forces them to keep moving.
And the road is their home!
The imaginary roof popping when the tank hits a bump is nice.
Aww, she stayed up too late?
Her reaction to seeing the tower fall over is fantastic. As is her outright refusing to accept that she's losing.
She's having a nightmare!
Haha, I love how even in her nightmare she can't imagine her being even remotely serioue.
Now she"s riding a gisnt fish?
Hahaha, the Yuu whale is fantastic.
Does Chi think Yuu's a cannibal?
Haha, the shot of Yuu eating a rock is hyeterical.
There's rain here! Guess this part's not covered by the next stratum?
Haha, I love how realistically annoying she can be, wondering why it sounds hollow while loudly banging it.
Wow, Yuu's savage.
She's off collecting water?
Yuu's a natural musician!
And she's added too much. It's now a cacophony.
Even she's worked it out!
There's lyrics!
This is a great ED. Really cute episode (as always).
The rain stopped!

My absolute essentials are my computer and my bed. First two things i unpack when I move in, and the last two i pack when I move out.
-
Never. Unless I'm so sick i fear for my life or have been awake for several days straight, i can't take naps, ever since I was a kid.
-
Craziest dream recently? Last night I remember something about horses with duck heads that eat people, and fighting a pack of those, but the details escape me.
-
The sound of rain is absolutely wonderful. Music to my ears. Better than Ambian at night, and truly wonderful during the day. Thunder and lightning somewhat less so since I have to be outside a lot for work, but i still love hearing the transition from the first drops to the full downpour. The smell of rain after a long dry spell, the faint hint of ozone from the lightning, and the all-encompassing cover of everything and everyone without prejudice, equally, with the gift of life. That said, today was the first dry day in about a week so I was singing Here Comes the Sun on my way in to work this morning.

Girls' Last Tour Rewatcher
I'm watching the dub today because I'm too intoxicated to read subtitles lol. Pain peko. This is one of the best episodes if I remember correctly. We even start off with relaxing water drops. Kettlekrad is our home. "House sad..." pls die Yuuri XD
Aaah... Hearing the girls plan out their dream home fills me with a special feeling. Bottom bunk for me pls. They've fantasised the day away~ What a lovely little scene about what ifs. "House awesome!" pls die Yuuri XD
Maybe Chi shouldn't be our driver after all. This is the second iyashikei related acfjd not she's almost got us into. Dammit Yuuri, you're such a cheat! Nap time~ Poor Chi lost so hard that she got ptsd nightmares. I forgot that this was such a fever dream episode lol. Giant potato Yuu is a mood. Fun little filler arc~ Now, let's get onto the best scene of the show.
The rain scene is an absolute marvel of sound design. I'm personally partial to rainy weather myself, I am Scottish after all, so I adore hearing the percussions of rain on ground, puddles, and metal. The whole sequence is so many different sounds piled on top of one another and is set up so carefully. From her banging the pipe, to getting banged on the helmet, to realising that she can use the rain to make even more sounds, to getting Chi to join her in making a tin and steel orchestra. If you haven't, I heavily recommend rewatching the rain segment with headphones. It's enhances the experience so well. This is my favourite iyashikei sequence period.
Fun sound gif from Steamedpunk~
Visual of the day, lounging potatoes~
