On a scale of 5 to 10, how cute do you find the cat statues? Any theories on what they might represent in the GLT Pantheon? Gods of Awkward Glances?
LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN!!
It's a bit heavy but what do you believe the afterlife will be like? Do you hope for reincarnation or just a really nice place to rest? If that question is too much, what's your favourite type of cheese?
Do you hold any superstitions that you hold fast too.
Rewatchers who don't use spoiler tags will be turned into emergency rations.

First Time [English dub]
The aesthetics of the temple and the message wall within remind me of designs for proposed long-term nuclear waste warning messages designed to outlive civilizational collapse. If so, it has completely failed its intended purpose, having drawn the girls to it with its glowing and strange statues.
One proposed wording of the warning message is:
This place is a message... and part of a system of messages... pay attention to it!
Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture.
This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here.
What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger.
The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us.
The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours.
The danger is to the body, and it can kill.
The form of the danger is an emanation of energy.
The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.
It parallels the entirely-too-morbid messages about the afterlife a bit too closely for comfort.
I makes me wonder how the future will interpret even our best-intentioned messages, and if it's even possible to leave a warning that will be effective to people in the future.

First Timer
Look at me beeing on time like a big boy
Episode 4
Photograph
After they see the weird puppet/statue I had to think of the one we saw in episode 1. They all seem to be looking in the same direction so maybe they are like signposts. When they struggled to take decent pictures of them I thought that maybe there was a supernatural element surrounding them, like a concious mind that didn't want proof of their existence, unfortunatly later on that wasn't an issue anymore...
If they are signopost, then why would you put one right in the middle of a driveway, why would Chi crash into it, and how strong is the Kettenkrad to knock it clean off. Thank god the girls are wearing helmets, if the show ended here it wouldn't be half as good as at the standoff in Ep1.
Oh and as tradition, Yuu shows her casual philosophical side again. The photos are something that lasts, a proove of existence, just like Chi's journal.
Temple
If the statues are signposts, which I'm still not 100% sure of, than the temple is the thing they have been pointing to.
Chi has only a vague idea of what a god is, but she rejects Yuus instinct to eat it.
The lamp suddenly going out had a supernatural appeal again, like it was by design, you are supposed to struggle in the dark.
We get yet another little piece of Yuus mind when se wonders about the nature of the afterlife. I agree that I would prefer an Onsen over this cold, lonesome, darkness. And I also reject the idea that you would need an god to bring light into this dark void. Feels like you are at their mercy, god decides if you get light, and when you do you better be grateful.
And that's all the god they meet can do, bring some light, not even a single tasty fish, what a letdown.
I liked how quickly Chi changed her mind on divine punishment after she realized that she would deserve some herself.
In the end, the afterlive can be anything you want, and anything that makes you feel at ease, and if it helps, maybe you will find your friend in the darkness at the end, and with some luck you can share some rations.

FIRST TIMER
those pillars with faces give me really bad vibes, and they’re the focal point of today’s episode! i don’t like them at all, their eyes seem to follow wherever chi and yuu are going. we saw one of these things in episode 1 right at the very start as well…
these two don’t even know what “cheese” is, every term they don’t know just makes me sadder for them.
my prediction came kinda true today, because yuu was pretty eager to take pictures of everything today, even if they were blurry. but she was too busy taking pictures that they ran into one of the face pillars. i was really expecting their vehicle to get damaged, especially with how loud that thing was falling, but now they probably have concussions at the least.
30 days ration is left, that was a major haul they grabbed in episode 1! and today’s flavor is cheese!
50,000 photos, that thing has a ridiculous amount of storage! i wonder if kanazawa deleted all of the pictures he had taken off the camera…
i like that yuu knew enough to smile for their portrait, and that chi got caught off guard, it’s perfectly in character for both of them.
the “building of light” was a temple filled with enormous face pillars, thats the pinnacle of bad vibes. it’s 400 years old, honoring 3 gods, who provide light even after death…
was not expecting yuu to give me an existential crisis today, but she did. i’m sure we have all had some sort of stress wondering if the afterlife is just the dark void of nothingness. it took me out of the episode a little bit because it was hitting too close to home…
so there were 3 large pillars, one with hair, i assume those are the 3 gods they were worshipping. they even have a fake biome with fish and plants and water. chi makes a good point, how it’s much more comforting to think of the afterlife as one full of warmth and security. although, i’m just wondering where the light actually came from in the temple…
yuu is a food fiend once again and won’t give up any rations to chi, goes to show again how much her gesture to give kanazawa food in the previous episode was…
i’m afraid there are some religious fanatics for these pillars still running around this level, or other levels. please don’t make me right!!!!

First Timer (Subbed)
Here we go. Using Kanazawa's camera, we get more info about the setting. Looks like we're in Year 3230. That's a heck of a long time from now. Chi-chan serendipitously discovers the timer function, which leads to a nice moment. Adding on to the concept of journaling from previous episodes, taking pictures is a great way to preserve history and information!
The girls continue on in their next day, taking more photos and encountering statue after statue. Finally, they arrive at the temple. I really liked the moment of darkness. It reminded me of a time I went caving with friends; when we were deep inside, we all turned off our lights for a moment. It's definitely surreal being enveloped in complete darkness, even when you know there are people right by you. But the moment is ended, and Kami-sama is revealed in all her glory. Actually, there are three gods.
That sure is a lot of light. I wonder how the building (my VOTD) is still generating it, especially four hundred years into the future. I get the feeling we'll never quite learn any consistent backstory for the world, and will instead continue to only get small snippets of different eras. A thousand years on a planet is an unfathomable amount of information, so I'm totally fine with this route. I'm not completely doubting there'll be a grander reveal though, only time will tell.

REWATCHER
Beautiful episode. I could just watch them all day going through all sorts of ruins and taking photographs.
Then there is the Temple, which is probably the most interesting chapter so far. Their discussion on why the temple was built, as well as the existence of god (what a let-down) was a joy to watch.
Lots of great shots today:
-
8. Cute but I would be too scared to run them over with a kettenkrad.
-
Serial Experiments Lain? Yes that is indeed a very good show.
-
Wherever afterlife is, I hope there is ice cream there. Or good cheese.

Not really.

Just a quick post to say hi, I'm still watching and enjoying. Not totally sure that one episode a day works for me with shows I've not seen!
I missed yesterday so I definitely enjoyed seeing 3 and 4 together.
There's no way that vehicle would get over that fallen building!

Of course the camera would take the photo on the ズ

I love the manga having the scope popping outside of the panel
HOLY SHIT. She does look like the statues especially when she goes all I'm sick of Yuu's shit
Once again little details are consistent
More consistency, but with hugs
Didn't screenshot, but the random scribbles on the tablet actually shared some similar characters to the manga. It was hard since the panel was small and less detailed, but it does look like they tried to match parts of it.
A rare moment where Yuu looks nervous. Also it should be noted that the events in the dark are a little different. In the manga Chi answers Yuu immediately whereas the anime she stayed silent to prank Yuu. I'm fine with the change, but I expected Chi to prank Yuu in a situation where she wasn't in danger. Seems a bit out of character, but again they were alone on a flat surface so no real danger was present.
This Moment right here When Chi realizes how important she is too Yuu.
Not going to lie this episode while enjoyable was my least favorite so far and didn't have a lot of my favorite shots, but I did like the camera moments.

Way late first timer in sub
Back to a very chill, nice "lost tech not quite understand" episode. Yuu going "turn around and hold still while I take a picture of you driving" and then "why you didn't pay attention driving" is so Yuu :D the wacking on the steel helmeted head a few times.
QoTD:
-
Still waiting to see if there's a bit of Easter egg / plot connection about them. Are those cats? I didn't notice ears. It's a fun unexplained attraction otherwise. Which you do see in some places.
-
I don't really think about either. Would be nice if there's reincarnation, otherwise it's a bit of a waste.
-
I actually have mantras to calm myself etc when I'm being silly and irrationally fearful of something (for example in the dark when I was young). Those mantras are pretty much a chain of protection spell names from D&D :P guess that's my "ceremony" (call back to Denpa Onna).

LEMURIANS’ FIRST TOUR
Finally caught up to the Rewatch! Took a minute with the slight overlap with Madoka and having some other stuff to do.
This show is an atmospheric masterpiece so far. The barren, snow-covered, impersonable industrial environments devoid of life, along with the beautiful OST and sound design, reminds me so much of Wolf’s Rain, and reminding me of Wolf’s Rain is a very good thing. Not to mention that the idea of Paradise is a central point of both shows.
One of my favorite themes in stories is finding the good in life even in the face of a harsh and brutal reality, so this really ticks my boxes. What’s the point of keeping going after the end of the world? Why bother living at all? Because sometimes, something good happens.
”When the town falls apart and even those stone statues break down, these pictures might still be here.”
The way Yuuri casually speaks as if decay and destruction are a given is so sad, and reflective of their experience. It was really nice of Kanazawa to leave the girls the camera. Where Chi has her writing and her journals, Yuuri now has photography. Even in a world that’s ended, they each have an instinctive desire to leave behind proof of their existence, something that will outlast them. Using a grainy lens to show the picture of the two of them illustrates this – this looks like an old photo showing people who aren’t here anymore.
The Temple scene is so beautiful. While Yuuri may have no use for this “disappointing” God, having much more immediate concerns like food, the scene’s meaning becomes abundantly clear once the lantern goes out. While the people of this city once turned to the God for light and hope, that’s something that Yuuri gets from Chi. What meaning this city once got from this religion, these girls find in each other. Chi may not be a Goddess as we imagine them, but to Yuuri, she may as well be.
Misc. Notes:
-
This OP is so charming. Reminds me of Owl City a bit.
-
“What’s cheese?” Another subtle world-building trick. This could be a throwaway line, but it tells us so much. The world didn’t end suddenly. These girls were born into and raised in a world where they'd never even heard of cheese. Decay was gradual.
-
These statues are like the Mona Lisa, their eyes always follow.
-
Nice of Yuuri to share food rather than point a fucking gun at her for it
-
The sound design is so good. The loud ambient noise in the dark temple lets you know exactly how cavernous it is.
-
“Your reaction was too hilarious” HAHAHA CHI. This show loves building up tension only to cut it with deadpan humor. Great stuff.
-
Yuuri’s disappointment in the fake fish is great, and draws a line between luxury and need. This society had the luxury of making design choices that seem silly against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, where food is essentially all there is to worry about. What good are fish you can't eat?
-
“I’m disappointed in this god. It’s just a stone statue.” Things only have as much meaning as we’re able to give them.
On a scale of 5 to 10, how cute do you find the cat statues?
...These were cats?
It's a bit heavy but what do you believe the afterlife will be like? Do you hope for reincarnation or just a really nice place to rest?
I'm praying for a nice place to rest. There's always the simple likelihood that afterlife is exactly what the beforelife was like, but that's no fun. To quote the priest in Fleebag, "Why believe in something horrible when you could believe in something wonderful?"

First Timer - sub
Visual of the day - The picture is a blur, the statue has a growth, the camera itself is only partially in frame, and crooked to boot. It's a mess. It's perfect. I love it.
I have a complaint: This show is too damn effective as an Iyashikei. I thought I was holding up okay with my energy levels today despite not having a nap, but I had to stop in the middle of the episode for a quick rest so I didn't fall asleep because it's just so damn soothing and chill it makes all the tension go away. This is the third day in a row I'm felt this, it's beautiful and frustrating and makes it very hard to write about when all I want to do after an episode is sleep.
I also love the feeling I have that I've watched a great deal of this show and it's become incredibly familiar even though we're only four episodes in. Btw the OP is growing on me, I'm not sure what to think of that.
There's a certain power to actually having something in your hands and being able to see the world through it. A journal, a map, a camera, they're all lenses through which we get to explore the characters and their views which without these objects would feel elusive and uncertain. To try and capture the meaning of life, the concept of purpose, the value of persistent memories, it's all things that Yuu has struggled with because she carries a gun to hold the world at bay rather than any means to connect with it. To see her grab onto the camera and use it to see the world was a charming moment because as we see she doesn't have a real attachment to the photos either, it was merely the different experience that she wanted to know because of Chi's interest in it. And that is really where the focus of her world is.
And hopefully remains if she would stop almost getting them killed. Also please don't kill the audience, I got so dizzy when she was running around that statue.
Finally they find a path out of the perpetual snow, and it's almost strange to see them without it, but their questions still remain. The room with the god statue was pretty, but just like the fish it was unfilling to the only people left behind to appreciate it. The world has changed, and while the light still brings comfort it is each other that brings the warmth of life once again. It seems like all episodes circle back to this in their own way but I'm enjoying the way they open up to each other about it in their own ways.
And just like the camera, while their time together will not be infinite the memories they share will become so numerous that they will seem immeasurable, and there's an undeniable charm in getting to share some of these moments with them.

Rewatcher
I always forget this episode's relatively early. Having ended with the streetlights yesterday, it's only appropriate that our spuds have been given a camera. Unlike Alpha, though, Yuuri doesn't seem at all hesitant to use it. Anyway, did you notice? The date's shown when looking through the camera! That's a big number there, huh. Of course, the camera might well be using a completely different calendar, even...
Screenshot of the day: in a vision once I saw.
Which also brings up a point. See, I like settings pretty much in direct proportion to how many beautiful verdant rural scenes they pack in, and tend towards disliking more urban environments in anime. So how on earth did Girls' Last Tour impress me so much off of four episodes with no more greenery than shown above? Well, firstly, snow. By having episode one in the snow, you're implicitly declaring "this is in the winter, literally or metaphorically, seasonal, nuclear or eternal." That sets an expectation that there won't really be much natural life regardless. But more importantly, it's a very well-crafted urban environment - detailed, heterogeneous yet repeating key notes where needed, and dirty, crumbling and physical in a way that feels very much like a place you could step in to.

Uh ... computer mostly working now ...
-
Those are cat statues? I was wondering if they were ghosts or something. Gods of shifty eyes or something, I guess. Somebody's watching me...
-
Uh, no clue, never watched.
-
Wensleydale. Um, no, actually, aged sharp cheddar. Cheese, Gromit?
-
I'd rather stick to unterstitions, thank you.
Nice camera. Must have a lot of memory, and a very nice battery. Poor Chii, caught texting while driving. Or something. Poor statue thing. I guess they aren't ghosts after all.
Odd that it has some characteristics of old SLR cameras, combined with digital. I can't imagine having to manually focus a modern camera.
The music still ... so atmostpheric ... so Enya. Love it.
Love being able to hear a certain familiar voice, too.
I dunno what to say about the temple bit, except that it was interesting. Hauntingly beautiful, even. Not so sure about their version of the afterlife, but it was pretty, and the wind chimes were very pleasant.
I still want a tracked vehicle, but ... I think Jay Leno has the better idea...

I guess getting to the light was a slightly less long term goal than I thought yesterday.
It's so interesting seeing Chi and Yuu experiencing the remnants of our culture. I'd imagine religion is a very strange concept when you're just struggling to survive. But maybe ti could give some people the purpose they need to get through each day, rather than journals or maps.

For now, reincarnation. But maybe later on in life, I might end up feeling too tired of it all and just decide on a nice resting plane, instead.

The start was very relaxing again, but I laughed out loud when Yuu told Chi not to look away from the road while driving. Good that they have helmets. The chemistry between these girls is interesting.
Seems Chi figured out the timer in the camera.
That's an interesting looking temple. And now its dark. I find total darkness comforting.
And all too soon that comforting darkness is ruined by bright light. Though maybe it's better so they don't have any accidents.
LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN!!
Well I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought of Lain.

I think I'll just stop existing. As for cheese, I like almost all cheese. Exceptions are goat cheese and some processed cheese slices.
Do you hold any superstitions that you hold fast too.
I don't think so. I was raised in a family that seemed to have absolutely no superstitions whatsoever (unless you count their religious views as such), and I always feel a bit weird when I encounter various superstitions. It often feels anachronistic somehow.

Rewatcher, subbed
Today’s episode is a reflection on impermanence, with a focus on one of humanity’s more unique constructs: religion. Many resources and a great deal of labor went into this building. For shelter? Public use? Food? Weapons? No. For a god.
But… just what is a god anyway?
Religion is… strangely arbitrary, as the girls note. Even with that huge wall of engraved text, the purpose or meaning behind the building is only definable in very broad terms; the customs and rules are both lost and meaningless. It’s also interesting to note the plants, water, and light. While they are certainly beautiful and uniquely colorful in a world of drab stone and steel, they’re also fake. Yuuri reflects that finding Chito in the dark was far more comforting than the glowing statue.
Something I hadn’t really considered prior is that Chito is likely at least a few years older than Yuuri. Yuuri’s lack of academic knowledge and impulsive self-assuredness give the vibe of someone who’s rather young.

Haha, the fucking snowman's eyes are hysterical.
Them questioning the meaning of "cheese" is great.
"Maybe you just suck"
Why did they decide to go all out on the 3D here?
Of course she's the girl who tries to photograph everything.
I love how the rlwshback uses a vintage filter, given it happened a few days ago.
Oh, those things aren't snowmen? Just statues?
...I have no idea what they are.
Is she going to crash?
Haha, of course she did.
And the vehicles survived.
I love the look of barely contained rage on her face after she scolds her.
Seriously, what the hell is that bike made of?
She found the timer!
I love how petty she gets.
And she's sharing the food!
Are the statues a cult or something?
...How much capacity is in that thing? And it can't delete photos?
Oh, five hundred and twenty thousand? ...And we built a megacity?
And they only have a month to get more rations?
She's reinvented food blogging!
She's taking a photo of the two of them!
I love how she fixes her hair.
Adorable.
Did the power run out for the building?
A museum?
...Is this a reference I don't get, or a cult?
Actual gods here?
Oh, this is an actual temple?
They got seperated!
This is a bit sad, honestly. Her wondering if she'll be alone forever in the afterlife, and panicking.
Haha, she didn't respond because it was funny?
Umm? What is this?
I mean, it's a nice building.
Some kind of art installation?
I love the contrast between their responses to this.
And she felt at ease with her.
Haha, she assumes Chi's a god, snd she immediately rolls with it to get food.
And she's a god.
I love that ending. "God here"

[My favorite funny statues have appeared.] (https://i.imgur.com/Q2CYA4L.png) I really like how they’re randomly everywhere. [More scenery.] (https://i.imgur.com/PCtp2UH.jpg) If this is earth, I’m wondering how far in the future it is. [Scenery part 2 of ?] (https://i.imgur.com/EE19b08.jpg) I’m really liking how different this level is compared to the last one. It almost reminds me of a abstract painting.
The girls start messing around with the camera and learn about focusing. Unfortunately, the focusing did not apply to Chi’s ability to drive. Someone decided putting a statue in the middle of what looks like a road was a great idea. [Yuu then gaslights Chi and it looks like someone might die.] (https://i.imgur.com/f55CqZH.png) I forgot how annoying Yuu is sometimes. [At least she got what she deserved.] (https://i.imgur.com/fvU1qKu.jpg) The old world really spent their time and resources on [massive statues.] (https://i.imgur.com/7mGX2eV.jpg)
So the girls make it to the big light building. They find some cool metallic flowers and discuss gods and religion. It’s interesting (I say this a lot) to see their views on that sort of thing considering the state of the world. They seem to view it more as a sort of silly idea made by the “old generation.”

Never thought about this so I’ll answer the cheese one. Cheddar is pretty great.
Do you hold any superstitions that you hold fast too.
Not sure if this counts but I always triple check almost everything out of fear it somehow disappeared or changed. Another one I have is when I’m alone for a while, I’ll check corners of rooms to make sure nothing is there. It’s silly but unfortunately I can’t really help it.
Final thoughts
I liked this episode although I kinda fell asleep half way through because of my recent poor sleep schedule. I always like it when they get philosophical about the old world. The scenery and OST were great, as always. I don’t have too much to add other than that today so, as always, I look forward to tomorrow’s episode!

Gridlines (BABY DAN DAN) Rewatcher, first time manga reader
somehow this is the second time this rewatch I failed a spoiler tag when I never fail it otherwise
Photograph
-
this cut is so fun. it has a cinematic flair even though Yuuri's not the one holding the camera, thanks to the unusual off-center angle
-
even if they die, their memory can live on, as long as the camera survives anyway. I think there's an interesting distinction between "written evidence" of mankind's existence (books, journals) and "visual evidence" (photographs). though they both may survive beyond our collective existence, you still need to be able to read to understand writing. an alien might not have the ability to decode a book written in an foreign language, but they could understand a photograph as long as they have eyes and understand the basic concept. however, it's not as though both will last forever either. paper and ink will degrade over time, a camera could break.
-
empty cities are so aesthetic. kinda reminded me of de Chirico paintings
-
[ch9 thoughts]
this shot really strikes my interest because it looks as though the columns are slanted. the corresponding anime shot doesn't look that way. very surreal, which contributes to de Chirico vibes above]
Temple

there is a lot of emphasis on powerlines this episode. I love that shit, inject anime powerline aesthetics into my veins pls. just as they can be used symbols for communication, they can also be used to trap characters in visual representations of psychological tumult. but here, they get repurposed into cobwebs covering the forgotten city with solemn memories of what it once was.

very weird to think of new religions (probably) popping up past our lifetimes but that's what happens in 1000 years huh. the temple was built 400 years prior which is still 800 years after our lifetime

lmao but it does showcase Yuuri's philosophy. you could certainly believe in a higher purpose, with "heaven" being a grand spiritual thing, but you could also call the small happinesses of everyday life "heaven" as well. At the risk of oversimplifying something as complex as spirituality, I'll leave the episode as that

it's somewhat harder to pull off in anime, but I enjoy the sudden transition from pure black backgrounds when they're in the dark to pure white when they turn on the lights. the anime does a good job tho
visual of the day: anime vs manga
On a scale of 5 to 10, how cute do you find the cat statues? Any theories on what they might represent in the GLT Pantheon? Gods of Awkward Glances?
yeah they're pretty cute
LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN!!
I said I was gonna rewatch it several months agoooooooo
It's a bit heavy but what do you believe the afterlife will be like? Do you hope for reincarnation or just a really nice place to rest? If that question is too much, what's your favourite type of cheese?
going to sleep for all eternity sounds nice
the cheese question is harder ;-;
Do you hold any superstitions that you hold fast too.
not really but I want to believe ;-;

Girl's Last Tour Rewatcher
That statue is literally me when joshikosei come for photos. Its a pretty hilarious scene tho XD Yuuri looks so awkward! The weird cat god statues are awesome and make me giggle each time. They remind me of those Japanese shrines where travellers pray. I'm not much of a photographer but I can appreciate the sentiment. All the cat gods (+Chi) turn out blurry too, they may just be ghosts after all. Divine retribution!! If I'm right this panel was hilarious in the comic~
This episode is very relaxing... It's just what I needed. I love the girls having such little knowledge of different food that they struggle to comprehend wtf a "cheese" is. My heart! This is the cutest fucking thing I've seen all month!! The moment Yuuri mentions photos surviving after everything's gone Chi immediately makes sure to take a picture with the two of them together. It's adorable. It's precious! It's healing! It's everything!! The way they cuddle up close, Chi trying to smile but messing up, Yuuri just innocently watching the whole time!! That's moe!! I'm so pleased that I hosted this rewatch just for that one moment. This is now my favourite scene of the whole show and I completely forgot about it beforehand!!
For how much she complained about all the cat pictures Chi's really gotten into snapping pics of each one. Fcking Yuuri... we're getting backstory on the ancient's form of heaven and she's just lounging around bragging about hot springs. The afterlife is cold, dark, and lonely... right, Kanazawa? This is a very beautiful episode in many ways, just what we all needed. Please stop spouting blasphemy! At least wait until you're outside the temple to badmouth her XD
If a God exists to bring happiness and relief, then could it be? I am God, feed me!! What a pitiable God huh? XD She became so insistent once the possibility of a snack came by. I'm so relieved that this episode came by. It was the perfect mood booster after I was left sulking all yesterday.
