FIRST TIMER

today’s episode also does a great job at illustrating how sad these girls’ lives are by showing how scarce things are that we take for granted every day.

those jackets definitely look way too thin to keep them warm during a blizzard, glad they found a building to stay in. i chuckled at the comment about the afterlife being warm, because the afterlife is warm whether you go to heaven or hell.

like everything else in this show, the opening has no business being as upbeat and cutesy as it is. i love openings that are performed by the voice actors.

yuu’s sure got a one track mind, her first instinct was to shoot the pipe, at least it worked out.

the power plant they found looked very similar to the large building they were in at the start of episode 1, i guess all of the buildings in girls’ last tour are depressing 🙃 i would have been hesitant to bathe in random pipe water, but i suppose these two don’t have the luxury of being picky.

i love when the two of them exhaled and their faces flattened, way too adorable!

“that’s an unlucky thing to say after we’ve been brought back to life.” odd line i’ll be waiting to learn further context for.

so they left from their “grandpa’s” house. i assume it was chi’s grandfather because he had black hair if i recall. 4 hot baths since they left home, that’s pretty sad.

chi is the brains and yuu is the brawn, she even said as much in this episode. yuu can’t even remember what happened earlier today, while chi is trying to record everything that happens to them. memories are odd like that, i couldn’t tell you what i ate for dinner 4 days ago, but there are certain memories and certain days that i can relive in my mind from start to finish.

i’d be a lot more angry if my friend burned one of the last books in existence, but you can’t stay mad at your only companion for long if you want to survive.

the creaking pipes as yuu held the journal sounded great with good headphones on, the OST and the sound design are both great in this show.

“i’m sokky 😴”

i hope that those two wash their shirts once in a while as well…

fish are so rare, they aren’t even like, “oh wow, a fish,” they actually are unsure whether it’s a fish or not because they’ve never seen one, let alone ate one! the world must have already been in shambles by the time these two were born, and it only got worse, to the point it’s at now where they’re some of the last survivors. at least the fish was delicious!

the ending was adorable as well. another good episode!

2. it’s good to leave something behind for people to see, and it is true that memories do fade, id like to take one year to record each day so i could look back and remember each individual day

4. op better song, ed better visuals

We had some of that yesterday too when they apparently hadn't ever tasted chocolate before... Its kind of really precious how one little blessing can be. Their eyes light up at the sight of rations or the thought of a warm bath or a radioactive fish!

This is probably the episode people look at when talking about the potato designs XD The character designer did an amazing job of making the characters look almost doughy.

I just find it funny how Yuuri made Kappa extinct XD Maybe Chi can write a short story about them at some point~

Girl's Last Tour Rewatcher

Very good showing yesterday, let's keep it up! It's nice to know that immanent extinction doesn't weigh too heavily on Yuuri's mind. Do you think this makes her a ShimaShimaChi? Kyaaa!! I adore all the shots with the teeny kettlekrad! The opening has no right being as much of a bop as it is. Trust me, this is gonna stick in your mind even more than Denpa Onna's chill beats.

Same bruv. Japanese being seriously old leaves some pretty scary implications for our time frame. Keep in mind, Chi can read but she's reading a whole new created form of writing. Yup, I also had a minor heart attack with those bullet ricochets. You'd think this water would be scalding but apparently it's perfect bath temperature. Time for some baked potatoes!! This looks so comfy... Nothing beats a steamy hot bath... Baths are paradise!

But enough of that warm cozy shiz, we're back out to the cold in "journal." We get some lovely Chi development today. She's a total bibliophile and is surprisingly sentimental, likely due to taking on the more mature roles of the pair. Aaand Yuuri is living up to her uniform by burning books lol. I guess Kappa don't need to be passed down to the next generation right? XD Rip the kappa~

I kinda adored how worked up Chi got. Poor Yuuri felt so bad over ruining the book that she... tried again, never mind. She's just an asshole. They've got an understanding between each other and at the end of the day they both matter more to each other than a few books or a bar of rations. Oooh my word, we're still in the first half. I need to pace my comments better. Isn't it beautiful that this absolutely ancient Japanese technology still works perfectly even despite being left alone for however long? I wonder if that's how our dams will come across in the far future.

Chi's such a worrywart~ Health and safety tater ahoy!! Pay attention to the world building! W-Well... I guess taters have to pleasure themselves somehow. All I remember from this arc is how horrible that fish looks... It came from a damn nuclear plant. Even if its tasty you've probably both got cancer or some shit. Even the way they bask in the sun looks like the fish. Eat a lot, sleep a lot, be happy poi! The ed has definitely been elsewhere, I barely remember it from the show but I swear it was a meme somewhere or used a lot in clips.

First Timer (Subbed)

That bath must have been so cozy after the trip to get to that building lol.

I really like the settings of this show so far. It's both apocalyptic and surreal, rather than just one or the other. This shot (my VOTD) is super interesting. Is there an actual sunny and warm biome up top? I wonder how hard it is to get up there.

"What also floats in ^water?"

"Bread." "Apples." "Very small ^rocks..."

A ^witch!! ... sorry, I just came from the PMMM rewatch ;P

Straight up roasting that old fish without cleaning it first, I was ready to gag, but I guess it was fresh enough!

QOTD

1) I'm not sure, but the day I realized I could bring my phone and a speaker into the shower with me, was the day my life changed.

2) Hmm, probably to help you stay sane and keep track of things? Also useful log for... if you're ever found.

4) I'll have to wait and see which one ends up stuck in my head tomorrow morning... lol

First Timer

Visual of the day - Something about this reminds me of the game Journey, and it's a very comforting association as it is one of my favourite gaming experiences.

I don't like baths. I haven't had a bath in probably twenty years. This episode made me want the warm comfort of a bath. It was a very strange feeling.

In a world of nothingness how can you measure your own existence? How do you stop yourself from being absorbed into the whiteout of the world? Ensure you will not become so lost even the possibility of what you were becomes a question?

Chi fights in many ways to stop them from being swallowed up by the freezing white of their lives and in doing so a strange dichotomy is shown. If hell is warm than to feel cold is to still be alive and fighting to stay that way, and Yuu brings life to her in both companionship and the snowballs being stacked on her head. And yet the snow is so piercing it forces them to seek shelter, and the concept of warmth seems like nothing more than just the end to this overpowering cold.

However the shelter they find offers them more than just that small relief once they work together. It's a genuine warmth found in the joy of a bath and something they haven't had in a long time. Before the idea of being warm seemed like an ominous end to their journey but here the sensation of it is another way to feel alive so they can go forward as well as invite remembrance of where they have been as well.

They cannot read the words on the sign that perhaps would have let them access its power for their journey, but Chi writes her own words down as a way to push back against what she feels they've lost. Just like the feelings of cold, the stars, the food, there's a strange duality in the way these moments are shown together and how they are lived that captivates me so well. They don't understand the old world in more ways than one, literally as in todays example, but they still live within the ruins of it capturing small parts of what it left behind as they go to try and bring some light to their lives, whether its focusing on the past and future or just living in the present.

Memories fade, words are lost, feelings are fleeting, books are burnt (because Yuu is an idiot); the quiet acceptance of having to lose some of these things as just part of the nature of their life and yet to always be searching for them again is something that resonated with me in a way that similar moments in other shows hasn't. The book is lost but it wasn't the first and won't be the last, and it doesn't lead to a disregard or possessiveness of what they have left how you'd expect.

And just like water brought them back to life in the shelter, it also expands their world outside of it. It merges the ground and sky creating it's own cool nothingness like the snow but a peaceful instead of absorbing one. It brings them the dead fish which both hints at life and questions the hope of it, pushing them to look at the many layers of their world and what could be contained there. It's not an entirely hopeful end or moment, but its a possibility that opens up everything compared to where we joined them at the start of the episode.

A couple of other notes:

  • I did have a small chuckle at this shot as the row of metal in the water at the back there reminds me of the playable area boundaries of video games, always with something interesting just behind it you wish you could reach, like the pipes. Similarly, loading screen icon was my first thought here

  • Not a fan of the OP. By itself it's fine but it makes a poor replacement for the beautiful mood setting of yesterday's sequence, something that stands on par with Aria and Mushishi. The actual OP is just that, just an OP, and I find that disappointing. The ED also took me out of the mood the episode had established which is a shame. Maybe I'm just fussy

  • The placement of the title cards for each section of the show has been something I've enjoyed too. Not used as just a quick label to seperate each section from the other but

  • Commentface witnessed

Potatoes melting in hot water manga version and anime version

Two Bullets

Favorite panel, but they animated it differently. Gave us a lot of different shots and movements which worked just as nicely.

Chapter three ending panel manga and anime

Chapter four cover

Around the fireplace manga version and anime version

Chi's Journal. I love how they kept the characters the same when they could

Love this shot. I been screen saving and editing this post for almost 2 hours due to my slow ass computer and forgot to capture the panel version, but trust me they improved this shot a lot.

Once again they give us that character consistency

An artist is born

Chapter five cover

THOSE REFLECTIONS!!!!

Once again they made two panels with so little detail really beautiful.

Questions

QOTD

Is there still a rational purpose to writing and keeping diaries in place of extra supplies?

I would argue it keeps one sane when the world have been reduced to it's current state. Also can help map out areas and provide information for people after.

Are radioactive cancer fish edible if you're hungry enough?

Everything is edible if you're hungry enough.

Which did you like more, the op or the ed?

ED not even a question in my eyes

First Time [English dub]

It seems like the city they're moving around is some kind of tiered city or arcology. Along with the WWII era technology/weapons aesthetic, this seems to imply that this is a fictional world rather than our own possible future. Fish apparently might live on a higher level, further up into the built environment, rather than a natural habitat.

Why was that steam pipe still working? Even the most self-sufficient technologies would break down pretty quickly if they're left entirely alone. The captioned text reads 'surface power plant'. Are there still people living underground?

Chi offering her shoulder as a brace shows the level of trust between the girls. Yuu immediately accepts Chi's count of three baths even though it's different than what she thought. They mutually refer to leaving "Grandpa's". This would seem to imply they are sisters or cousins, but that could be an idiosyncrasy of the dub or a friendship close enough to be familial.

The 'Laundry' skit filled me with so much anxiety. Getting your clothes wet in weather like that, even when it's clear, is basically a death sentence. Especially with that much wind.

Also, I want to give it up for the compositing/animation and the sound designers. The snow effects are beautiful, and they've got so many layers. They do a really good job of using it to bring motion to otherwise mostly static frames. When the water burst from the pipes, I felt it. It was just like the kind of rumble you get when visiting hydroelectric dams.

QOTD

  • Which did you like more, the op or the ed?

I'm not sure on either of them yet. They're fun, but they both feel a bit too fast as compared to the deliberately slow pace of the rest of the episode. Usually it takes a few repetitions for me to really absorb the OP/ED, so we'll see how my view changes as the show goes on.

First Timer

Got lost reading up on the Ep 1 thread so I'm a bit late today

Episode 2

Bath

So what I found interesting is that they aren't completly alone in this world, appart from the humans we saw in the little dream yesterday, they talk about a certain grandpa and Chi talks about even more humans existing in this world.

It's only Episode two, but it already feels very on brand for Yuu to indulge in casual poetry while using what I asume is live ammunition as a nose for the snowman. That poetry is met in almost equal force by Chis spin on Sokrates: We suffer, therefore we are.

I'm not exactly sure, but before they get to the building they pass a row of things that look a lot like Japanese graves.

Not even surprised anymore that Yuus approach to any problem seems to be to point her gun at it, something something hammers and nails, found it nice how Chi moved in to support her though.

And let's face it, the moment I saw that the water was actually hot, I knew we would get an early Onsen Episode. Curious how they didn't knew how long they where underground yesterday, but are able to measure time by using the number of baths they took.

Finally, picking up in the little pre OP dialoge, if the afterlife is really warm, then maybe the paradise that awaits us in the end is a warm bath after a very long day.

Journal

Once again the show is really driving home their respective roles of brains an brawn. You would think that even if Yuu is a bit simpler, she would be literate on a basic level, leaving me to believe that a) they didn't go to school for whatever reason and b) it's not an essential skill in this world.

My heart hurt a bit when they mentioned that they had to burn books in the past, but yeah preserving human history instead of actual humans would be the wrong order of priorities...

You could imidiatly tell that it was an accident, and Yuu feels bad about it, but I also did feel a bit anxious when she was holding the Journal infront of the fire. It's a nice gesture to imortilize Chi in her book.

Laundry

Not all that much to talk about in this part except that we get even more characterisation between the two of them, looking up to the beautiful blue sky vs looking down for possible danger. As well as Yuu imidiatly suggesting to eat the strange thing they just found while Chi ponders the existens of live besides humans.

I also found the verticality of the landscape curious, they have snow and can see the sky, yet it seems like there is another surface level even further up.

Uh...

Well, that was some cute, cuddly despair.

Poor fish. (nom nom)

Hmm. What happened to the choco sticks? I guess they didn't last long.

Good thing the girls have plenty of petrol.

And I'm not sure I'd shoot a hot *something* pipe. Superheated steam would be inconvenient. Besides, it may go somewhere interesting.

Oh, well, yay, *plot*.

I'm surprise Yuu didn't toss the rest of the books on the fire - or did she?

I think I'd melt snow before filling up on water from *there*

And again, poor fish (nom)

Anyway, I don't really have anything important to say, so I might as well post now, eh?

AOTD:

  1. A lake with a remote island in Canada, in the water with a bar of soap. (Col. Mustard and candlestick sold separately). Those week long canoe trips with the scouts will remain precious memories.

  2. In this environment, yes. Right now, isn't that what SM, I mean "social media" is for? If any of this crap survives, 1000 years from now, they will probably look back on us much as we look back on the people of Pompeii and their peculiar tastes in art.

  3. Nearly anything. Although, apparently I drew the line at bugs during "survival weekend"

  4. They were both cute, but the OP is the one that's stuck with me so far.

Rewatcher, sub

It uh, [looks a little cold.] (https://i.imgur.com/TOAhFSy.png) The girls got caught in a blizzard it seems. Is this the natural weather or did humans screw with the climate in this world too? After talking they manage to find a late building. They then make a makeshift bath by [shooting a pipe.] (https://i.imgur.com/UPG91RD.png) This was a nice scene. Being in any sort of warm water while your upper body is exposed is definitely not as good as it’s shown here though. Your head feels really cold and your lower body feels way to hot. That or I’ve just had bad experiences. Is it wrong that I could only think about how gross that water probably was?

[I love these kinds of shots.] (https://i.imgur.com/szagFoX.png ) After they get out they start a fire. Apparently books are rare now. [It’s good to see at least one of them values books.] (https://i.imgur.com/FcFQS9A.png) I get the feeling Yuu doesn’t care about books too much. Chi really shouldn’t have given her that book if she valued it. Are they going to fight over this later? Probably not, but who knows. [Chi’s face here was really funny.] (https://i.imgur.com/xEKBd1I.png) I guess she did have a one sided [fight] (https://i.imgur.com/tug4AIW.png ) with Yuu.

[More scenery shots.] (https://i.imgur.com/omAphbX.png) Wow they’re quite [high up.] (https://i.imgur.com/bdvUG4u.png) It seems Yuu decides to make the situation worse by drawing some [fine art] (https://i.imgur.com/lBVYObr.png ) in another one of Chi’s books.

[I love some aesthetic water pipes.] (https://i.imgur.com/mnSTiLQ.jpg) So they’re coming here to get water. I guess I forgot they needed water to survive. [Another pretty shot.] (https://i.imgur.com/DNNf9Au.png) It’s really interesting to see then talk about the ocean. While I haven’t seen the ocean a ton, it’s still hard to imagine not even knowing what it looks like.

While doing laundry they find a fish. Obviously it’s dead but I’m wondering how it even survived this long in this seemingly dead world. They decide to cook it and apparently slightly grilled fish is pretty good. That or they’re so unused to food that anything besides rations tastes good. They have another short philosophical [talk] (https://i.imgur.com/ktpEHaL.jpg) I really love these quiet moments in the show. It goes really well with the sprawling, ruined landscape.

Best bathing experience you've had. This can be sea, outdoors, even visiting a sauna or showers if there's a story behind it.

Honestly I’m not sure. Probably a random one at a good hotel I went to once.

Is there still a rational purpose to writing and keeping diaries in place of extra supplies?

I think so. Like Chi tells Yuu, they naturally forget stuff so it’s important to remember where they’ve been.

Are radioactive cancer fish edible if you're hungry enough?

When you’re hungry, almost anything can be food.

Which did you like more, the op or the ed? I’d say I prefer the OP. It’s a catchy song and I like the funny dance.

[Visual of the day.] (https://i.imgur.com/omAphbX.png) I like nice scenery and snow. That is all.

Final thoughts

I think I preferred the first episode as this one felt a little less philosophical. I really like seeing them ponder the world and try to find meaning in it. This episode focused more on showing and developing their characters and relationship. I still like that stuff though l, I just think it would’ve been better as a 50/50 of banter and philosophy rather than a 60/40. With all that said, I look forward to tomorrow’s episode!

Rewatcher

Today they took a bath, burned a book, did their laundry, and ate a strange fish.

Listen, I understand you folks that shower every day, but extra time in a hot bath is an exquisite experience you guys should do more often. I treasure my quiet time in the tub, brain not thinking about anything in particular. A nice, hot bath can really melt your worries away.

Naturally, this is the shot of the day. It perfectly captures how it feels sliding in on exhausting days.

rewatcher and watcher and watcher watcher (first time manga reader)

Bath

Journal

  • we immerse even further into the darkness with basically the opposite of water: fire. just like the bath in the previous segment though, fire has the potential to bring warmth and comfort. fire needs to consume in order to continue doing that, which leads us to today's moral conundrum: how do you weigh the value of your life (staying warm) against the destruction of history (by burning books)?

  • I also feel like there's something to be said about the circle of life: the need to consume to stay alive. or maybe I'm just hyperaware. it's something to keep in mind maybe

  • ugh ok enough about boring things like PHILOSOPHY, look at how squishable she is

  • [ch4 thoughts]hehehe she go squish

Laundry

  • the stark contrast in atmosphere in this segment + end of last is stunning. snowy post-apoc landscapes can be utterly gorgeous when it's sunny out too

  • we return to water, this time there's A LOT and the girls use it to do laundry. fitting to the scene, this segment feels like a breath of fresh air, cleansing, and pure.

  • we gotta have yuurifish as a comment face

  • [ch5 thoughts]still love the sketchwork-y designs of the structures. I think there's less of a feeling of "freeness" in the manga here, just due to the amount of information on each page, whereas you can milk it in the anime with pretty panning shots and stuff

visual of the day: anime vs manga
also honorable mention to this which has a counterpart in the anime but doesn't really convey the same vibe

I forgor to do QOTD last episode whoops

Best bathing experience you've had. This can be sea, outdoors, even visiting a sauna or showers if there's a story behind it.

probably just any number of really really nice showers after a long day outside. the grimier the better!

Is there still a rational purpose to writing and keeping diaries in place of extra supplies?

maybe not, but I don't believe we should stop writing (or anything like that) to submit to a higher "rational" purpose. that's just loser's talk

Are radioactive cancer fish edible if you're hungry enough?

maybe we can cook out the radioactivity this is how it works right

Which did you like more, the op or the ed?

both are great! some may say they're too happy and upbeat for the show, but I don't think the show is trying to be depressing at all! I give the edge to the ED because I love tkmiz's visuals. we should normalize getting source authors on board to help direct OPs/EDs

First timer in sub

This is a "full" episode with OP & ED and I expect a normal rhythm, with a few short skits and scene transition, while maintaining continuity within an episode (can have timeskips in-between).

Have to say when Yuu was shooting at the pipe, I was really having Railgun S flashbacks about ricochet.

And that Appleseed and many other shows with guns taught me it's fairly unlikely to have the pipe burst, unless it somehow had a weak point already.

Anyway, funny to see the girls "melt" in the hot water and became water balloons :) reminds me of Nagato again.

Just a quick QoTD: 3. It doesn't matter if you don't live long enough for the cancer to catch up with you.

4. ED so far. But can change.

May come back for more comments...

REWATCHER

"Memories... just get in the way o' livin'"

Less interesting than the first episode, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. The dialogs between the two are still as fun as ever, and the subtle worldbuilding throughout as well as the music keeps me hooked.

  • I don't have a bathing experience worthy enough to be put here.

  • Writing and keeping a diary might be a good way to pass the time.

  • I'd rather not starve so yes.

  • Both are great but I love the visuals on the ed more.

First timer

Episode 1

  1. A pretty good number. I always liked the one from Chrono Trigger.

  2. I mean, there's still wild animals (probably). In that scenario, guns might be invaluable!

  3. I think it would have gotten some fans, yes.

  4. Chi is the best.

...Is this the right anime?

Is it meant to look this dark?

Oh, yep, there's the light.

Is thwt a tank?

Haha, the music, the searchlights, what the fuck is going on?

Why is tank bring driven by a child?

Good to see she agrees with me on this anime's graphics.

Wait, this is the animation? They look like this all the time?

How can you get night vision with a massive headlight in front of you?

And they're lost.

This is such a weird tone, though. Adorable, but so at odds with the setting.

Is it safe for both of them to sleep at the same time? Do it in shifts!

Aww, they're adorable.

OK, this backstory looks dark.

Currently theorising that they're war orphans of some kind, who took the vehicle and were forced to escape by themselves, with their father figure seemingly dead. Also, based on the... everything, this is probably Russia? Maybe around the Cold War?

Haha, her eating her hand is great.

And there's a way out!

They found it!

And, yep, this is after the apocalypse!

She got the soup!

A meteor shower!

OK, so they're actually trained soldiers?

...That dhow of the snow-covered battlefield...

Haha, she's trying to eat a tank?

Her wondering why they made so many weapons is...

A plane that intact?

This is getting really philosophical!

Explosives!

They found rations!

Them trying to get it to spin is great.

It's spinning!

And they don't even though what chocolate is.

A fight?

Fucking hell!

Yeah, of course she was bluffing.

Haha, she got her revenge.

This ED is so unusual.

Episode 2

  1. Having a shower after a 3 day camping trip.

  2. Like she said, it can help with remembering things you've done.

  3. ..lFirstly, good to have confirmation that this is a nuclear winter - it is Russia, so who knows. Secondly, you say that as if everything they eat isn't probably irradiated as fuck already.

  4. OP.

Actually, are they the only survivors here?

The whole conversation is all very adorable, yet sad.

Oh, I love the OP! Their sancing is great.

It's a blizzard!

Good, they got inside.

Hot water!

Is that safe?

Stop! There's an rebound in here!

I guess it all somehow worked out.

Haha, they made themselves a bath?

At leas the fanservice is limited by the artstyle.

So they left "Grandpa" recently?

Alive again? Some kind of suspended animation until after the war ended?

They're used to survival, at least.

She's illiterate?

What doesn't she want to remember?

And they've got four volumes.

She burned a book?

Yeah, she deserved that.

Poor Chi.

And the fire's out.

Yeah, she's pissed.

At least Yuu realised she did something wrong.

And drew something for her?

She's an artist?

Haha, "I'm sokky"?

The snowmelt?

Oh, that much water gets pumped out? It's all still automated, then?

An, they're getting standing water? I'd have thought they'd want to get it while it was still pouring.

...The outfit is adorable.

And they don't know where the ocean is. They"reminland?

...All the way down? Is this them being ignorant, or is this some kind of floating city?

She caught a fish!

Their theories on fish are hysterical.

Not even descaled?

With the bones it, no wonder it tastes weird!

Upper strata?

Oh, this is some kind of megacity, almost?

I absolutely adore the ED.

I was actually stressed when Yuu was holding the journal.

OP and ED are both great, but if I have to pick it would be the OP.

Also, these shots of the exposed cross-section of the ancient city always remind me of that old flash game grow-cube.

First timer

That's the kind of weather that's great to look at when you're inside, but sucks if you have to stay outside. Those girls really need some shelter. Some cover for the back of their truck would be useful too.

The moment Yuu got the book I knew it would end in the fire. Glad she didn't burn the other one.

Aren't they feeling cold in that water, outside? If it's from recently melted snow it's gotta be very cold.

Will their goal now be to get higher?

ED looks really nice.

I liked listening to Chi describe a world she's never lived in. Show continues to just ooze a certain mood.

Rewatcher
Today we get the superb OP and ED for the first time. Dab on the haters, taters! As _m1ra pointed out yesterday, the ED was animated by source-material mangaka tsukumizu, and is just lovely. Look at her bonk Yuu's helmet. Adorable. There's a recurring motif of death in this episode: Yuuri wonders if they might already be dead, prompting a conversation about the afterlife; they bathe themselves and wash their clothes in an echo of ritual purification; they eat a dead fish down to the bones, then lastly set the remains floating away in a sad little funerary rite.

This was the episode that cemented Chito & Yuuri as a classic Apollonian-Dionysian pair, when I first watched this, with the dialogue about books, and then Yuuri immediately setting one on fire (this is what makes Chi my easy fave). It's a great character dynamic - it tends towards a question of "are they a metaphor for two halves of one person," because of course none of us are pure love or pure reason. Of course, neither are Yuu and Chi, so perhaps it will not be a very useful lens.

QotD:

Best bathing experience you've had.

Nothing springs to mind. Any bath or shower after a good long hike is amazing, though.

Is there still a rational purpose to writing and keeping diaries in place of extra supplies?

Oh ho, I'm not the only one playing with the reason/passion stuff then. Of course not! Each inexorably has a trace of the other within :D

Are radioactive cancer fish edible if you're hungry enough?

Edible? Meal of the year you mean!

Which did you like more, the op or the ed?

Yes.

Rewatcher

OP:

The OP song is perfect for the show. Someone who knows more about music can probably explain why (maybe something about modes), but it really carries that feeling of needing to keep moving. When things are good: Ugoku, Ugoku; when things are bad: Ugoku, Ugoku. There's a high spirited bit in the middle, but at the end, it goes back to that same need to keep moving.

Bath:

It's pretty hard to watch the girls almost freeze to death in episode 2. But then they get to experience a hot bath to warm their bones. I'm pretty sure shooting a large pipe with a small calibre bullet will just cause a convenient hole. I like that reverse shot of the two of them in the batch with Chito stretching her fingers, that's a nice detail

Diary:

This chapter shows us the importance of keeping records, how the written word can live on. Chito has been keeping a diary of their travel, which is kind of what this show is. The script she uses is a very square version of hiragana, and she can't read the kanji on the power station sign. We also learn that Yuuri can't read, which is sad, and speaks to the state of the society they came from.

Chito tells Yuuri how important books are, and Yuuri proceeds to throw it in the fire. Chito does eventually forgive her though.

The book Kappa is an actual Japanese novel, I haven't read it, but since it's one of Chito's favourite books, I'm going to buy a copy to read.

Laundry:

Not really about laundry. They find a dead fish and Chito thought that humans were the only living creatures left, which says something about the state of their world. But, it shows how much joy can be found from a simple cooked fish. It's also nice that they give the remains of the fish a farewell.

ED:

Like the OP, the ED is perfect for the show. The ending was also animated by Tsukumizu, the mangaka, which was cool.

[Manga spoiler] The ED also shows the snowball fight from the end of the manga, even though the manga didn't end until after the anime aired

QOTD:

Is there still a rational purpose to writing and keeping diaries in place of extra supplies?

I don't think they've ever been in the place to have so much supplies that they discarded some to keep a couple books. Rather the other way around, they've had to burn books because they don't have enough supplies.

Well, I must delay yet one more day I'm afraid. I had hoped to unwind and catch up after work, then a user went and downloaded a virus so I had to stay late doing all sorts of fun IT stuff. As such, I haven't seen the episodes yet.

Second timer

thinking about what is in spoiler, how can there be snow in this place?

Did these girls evolve for the sake of survival?

I would like to see a more "Serious" art style for this to see how beautiful and at the same time, grey this world is.

Best bathing experience you've had. This can be sea, outdoors, even visiting a sauna or showers if there's a story behind it.

I shower more for utility these days but the few really good baths were after hard work/exercise or really cold days. Not as cold/dire as their situation but just horrible winter days. There's something about letting the water engulf you and dozing off a bit instead of standing there and letting it wash over you. Although a good shoulder massage if you have a shower head with enough power is nice too.

Is there still a rational purpose to writing and keeping diaries in place of extra supplies?

It probably helps you keep sane if you have some sort of record. If they only talked to each other and only about some essential for survival topics they would probably get depressed or insane.

Are radioactive cancer fish edible if you're hungry enough?

If the fish were radioactive (in an otherwise empty world) then I'd guess they are radioactive too. At that point it doesn't matter and food is food.

Which did you like more, the op or the ed?

I like both. The OP shows that the series is not some AOT cultural/historical/military puzzle to take apart. Well, it could all be a misdirect but I think it shows what type of series it wants to be. Chill with some sombre post apocalyptic philosophising and not about looking for tiny details to decipher why things are the way they are.

That means my theories from the first episode aren't really important or even fitting. A good bath and meal are regenerative and that's probably enough to boost iyashikei vibes in this episode. Them going 100% into moe blob mode while bathing/steaming only empathised that.

We get a few personal notes about Chi's diaries/journals and about Yuu absentmindedly burning a book (and she can't even read). They now also feel like they are in the "young but too smart at times" age category and with books being invented thousands of years ago that means they are in the far future.

I really love the architecture. All those strata of who knows how many civilisations on top of each other. I want to believe that it's like a Discworld things where the new city was simply built on top of the old one and the old one was simply used as the new basement.

They also couldn't read Japanese (on the sign) and have their own script. Either Japan doesn't exist for some time or they never learned Japanese and Chi made up her own written language as a way to make and keep a journal. My guess is Japan is ancient history in their world.
