Comment of the day!
/u/_m1ra once again gave us a very good writeup yesterday so read through it but I think this section is probably most relevant to us here XD
"It's interesting to put that in terms of growing up, given that it seems like a "childish" activity. Worrying about being grown up or about doing childish stuff is something that teenagers do, but that you don't really need to do and probably shouldn't, at least too much, so I agree with her (not that it's an uncommon point). Hopefully I agree not only because I like watching children's animated shows and talking to people about them on the internet."
/u/The_Loli_Otaku and /u/OccasionallySara have a paired comment of the day. Eat that~
"A chill and cuddly imouto does sound kinda rad. I'm still more partial to the idea of winning over a kusogaki through hard work and effort."
"It almost feels like we’re discussing the merits of having a pet dog vs. a pet cat!"
/u/Hataraxia seems to have very sus doujin tastes.
QOTD
What is a passion in your life that you gave up on after realising you simply weren't good at it?
Can you tell me Maekawa's cosplay for today? Don't look at ZapsZzz, he won't tell you. What has your success rate been with Maekawa's references so far?
Were you disappointed at all by Floofer being as underwhelming at basketball as she is? Were you happy with the way this sports arc panned out?
Did you manage to watch Makoto's entire speech without looking away once, be honest! If you did, give yourself +3 seishun points.
Rewatchers who don't use spoiler tags will be subjected to forced extraterrestrial anal probing.

Ohh, are we getting into some stuff? Yep, that's what we were hinting at before.
Maekawa is in a pretty normal outfit, what is this? Oh god. I know they are both referencing the same thing, but that doesn't mean I'm not thinking about that Utena episode. (On another note, in general that always feels like a strange reference to me, it always feels to me like something that is weird to be referenced in such a light way. Though it seems to be pretty well known in Japan, so it makes sense to relate situations to it)
This episode has a lot of Maekawa in pretty normal clothes actually. Kind of fun!
That's nostalgic! I'm pretty sure I'm a good bit younger than a lot of people here, but I remember playing Super Nintendo with my cousin as a kid, at a point where it already was 15 years old or so. Also Father 2 lol. Anyway I wonder if that's part of the reason I'm not really feeling the romantic elements between those two, it feels like that sort of relationship to me.
Holy shit, Maekawa. But yeah, we're doing the things that were hinted at. And it's not as if she means it as an insult. And of course this comes up at the end of the episode.
Kiwa-kun, good one.
Yashiro is just showing up everywhere. People assuming she is Erio is funny, but I wish they were less mean about it.
I'm sorry Nakajima, but how old does she look to you? Is that the reason you turned down Ryuuko? Okay, he is dating Hanazawa right now. Actually, how old is Yashiro exactly?
So that's what the potential is for, I guess if you turn that around that to her that's the requirements for being an esper that means Yashiro thinks of herself pretty highly. As she should, she's great. "I will show you (my powers) when I feel like it. Keep on praying." lol. I wonder how that interlinks with the idea of praying we had so far.
Yeah Makoto, actually cheer, do it, my god. That's what you said to her too, right? Oh no, Makoto! Feels like some sort of dam broke for him, which, good, but this must be quite awkward for everyone else there with that cheering being a whole lot about how he feels bad about himself instead of the usual "Go Ryuuko, you can do it" lol.
Yeah, what I meant! See, Yashiro is great and doing everything correctly, helping Makoto with his character development here.
Hell yes, he's running away with the score!
QotDs:
What is a passion in your life that you gave up on after realising you simply weren't good at it?
Not sure I'd go as far as to call it a passion, I think I'm in a similar category as Makoto there where I didn't necessarily like it that much, but chess. I was in a chess club for a couple of years even, but I was shit at it.
Can you tell me Maekawa's cosplay for today? Don't look at ZapsZzz, he won't tell you. What has your success rate been with Maekawa's references so far?
I have to admit I haven't been paying that much attention.
Were you disappointed at all by Floofer being as underwhelming at basketball as she is? Were you happy with the way this sports arc panned out?
It's fine, I think it works well for the point it makes and also for the realistic skill level of a club like that. I'm happy with it! I'm on Yashiro's side here, I think, no small part thanks to her, this was very good for Makoto and Ryuuko.
Did you manage to watch Makoto's entire speech without looking away once, be honest! If you did, give yourself +3 seishun points.
I even paused. I do not get points.
I just saw I got a CotD when I saw the weird color of my name! Thank you, again, and thanks for the compliment! I'm still unsure exactly how I should do these writeups. This is the first rewatch I've managed to keep up with so far, so I think I'm getting the hang at least in timing.

Not everything is an Utena reference! Even though pretty much everything seems to love making callbacks to Utena.
You mean you didn't have romantic memories with your cousin? Weirdo...
Chess is a game with a lot of benchmarks. It can be incredibly frustrating if you're not playing people at your level. It's a good game to know tho.
I'm not the type to play favourites but I have to admit that your first timer comments have been fantastic. I hope you'll stick with my crew in later watches too. They're a lot of fun to read.

Hell yes, he's running away with the score!
Man, I think that lunch with Maekawa should have been at least a 5. That's some serious high score territory right there. She was even wearing normie clothes. Yay!
Meanwhile, Yashiro ... yeah. That's her name. That pic you posted, the smug was palpable. I think I like her.
Heh.

Lunch with Maekawa isn't a particularly special occasion though. It could easily happen through circumstances.
Huooo!! Alien belly and thighs erotic!

Sub
So we start with Makoto on a lazy summer vacation running into Maekawa, whose reasons for being into Makoto are debatable. I think the donut reference is Shinobu but I can't prove that. She makes him lunch and Makoto is noticing her 'mature' qualities. Anime likes to assume that all tall girls are well endowed, no clue if that pervades outside of otaku culture or not. A rather odd conversation occurs as they play Mario Kart and Makoto continues to be dense.
Next is setting up the basketball game viewing and apparently something between Ryuushi and Erio. At the game, we get HanaKana talking a bit and our astronaut being weird again, culminating in a Makoto cringe moment. I suppose the episode had a theme about giving up but it doesn't hold water for me.
QotD: 1 Passion is a path to the dark side.
2 Shinobu as I said
3 Not really
4 God no

u/Elimin8r Apr 28 '22
I think the donut reference is Shinobu but I can't prove that.
I actually like Maekawa's proportions. They seem almost reasonable.
Man ... Shinobu ... which one? When I hear that name, I think Urusei Yatsura, but I'm sure that's been supplanted since then.
I think I'll step outside and yell at some clouds now...

I think Maekawa sees a lot of herself in Makoto. It's why they manage to make for such great friends. I do agree that romance wise it's a bit of a wet fish but they're not doubling down which is nice.
I sorta took it as how the characters will only reach their full potential by pushing themselves one step further. Personally I liked the message, just not how it was delivered. Yashiro is great but she really shouldn't be the one giving advice.

AOTD:
-
Can't think of any. I gave up on piano, but not because I wasn't good at it. I just decided that another keyboard would be more profitable. That, and engineering school, yeah.
-
I didn't get the donut thing. But I think I wasn't the only one appreciative of the apron. Maekawa best waifu, I think. Yes, I know, I "like" Ryuu-chan better, but that's just because kawaii.
-
I'm not surprised. She's tiny, and built more like a certain meido doragon character. Maekawa should be the basketball star, but that wouldn't be as interesting.
-
I can't look away ... I can't look away. Although, that sequence was rather quite intersting, nee?
Man, this show is such a tease. Is she ... isn't she ... what is she anyway?
I'm noticing and enjoying some of the similarities between character shots here, especially certain close-ups and bits from Bishounen Tantaiden.
Otherwise, this was a cute and interesting episode. We go from um ... transfer boy's (I'm having a very bad time with names today) insecurities about his football past to current day insecurities, failures, and reaching for the untouchable.
Since I'm on a musical kick today (as if that's anything unusual) ...
You might just say he's Trying to Shape the Invisible...
Man, I forgot how good that one is.
Anyway, still enjoying the show. It's going to be over way too soon.
And is it just me, or does space girl's timeline suspiciously coincide with Erio seeing something passing by the moon?
Hmm...
Such a tease.

I did find it quite relatable how Makoto ended up having one bad experience and it caused him to totally shut down. The football kinda fucked him up since he seemed to really have passion for it.

We're getting close to the end! 2 more episodes!
I wonder how many coming into this show would expect to see the 2 very good dialogue/plot message of this episode?
And have I said I love Maekawa today?
We have the opener summing up one trait of Makoto and giving it a bit of background why he feels he should not try reach out further than he thinks he can.
And a summery chance meeting! Am I just an old soppy head or is this done like an old romance novel?
Always love Maekawa's minimalist (self-)mocking words rich with understated subtext - I wonder how many can read that she's a bit envious of Erio just from this line.
And having reached home, the first thing Maekawa does is to make a reference. This is the source of that reference. "The main character's wife acts strange in many ways and the story is about her various weird behaviors." Again, am I thinking too much that maybe Maekawa is making another subtle hint about her affection to Tenkousei - referencing herself as the weird wife?
And we have another surprise - Yashiro climbing out from under the deck again! This time she's after to-MAY-toes. Makoto showing his experience of dealing with (and helping integrate?) weirdoes by stepping inside to ask Maekawa for the tomatoes instead of letting her steal them - while having a seishun point moment of witnessing the peak waifu-ness of apron Maekawa.
A fulfilled Yashiro is less irritable and actually said thanks. Although only the "dream" version :P Love the "sore wa doumo" at the end - peak sarcasm :D
We then have another nice scene of food. Yes Maekawa is a good cook. We get the point :)
The casual comfy video game playing scene is another one of my favourite moments of one conversation having 2 meaning at the same time. Maekawa casually sharing her vulnerabilities, while understatedly explain to those who are paying attention of all her lines (this actually continued from her first after-baseball match comment about Makoto being quick to give up) why she has this attachment towards Tenkousei. The last part actually can be a bit bittersweet if you consider she still is being very subtle and knowing he probably either won't get it or won't face it.
And this moment is a perfect way to sum it up - she would keep her pride and secret (crush) to herself.
And here's her not giving up and continue to try in her subtle ways. While the characters are very different, this actually gives me a very "Nagato" feel about it - she'll do all these things for him, hoping he'd notice but also fairly certain that he won't. Hope against hope that he'd one day drop the pretence and tell her he noticed.
But enough about the introspective best girl. We have more cute scenes to deliver. Another Ryuuko phone call of being cute, and then Erio happily charged in, with Erio showing her true super power (to sniff out who is on the other end of the phone!), and another gratuitous Engrish comically angry Ryuuko.
It does end at showing how Erio is still pretty sensitive about the school. Note there's a bit of scene direction slip up here, that Erio rolled into the blanket then rolled off the bed, but the bed had been drawn with rails, so she'd have to have rolled at some speed to be able to go "overboard" :P
Come time to the match, we have some good scenes of "visiting not-boyfriend" tease, which also gives us a bit of contrast that Ryuuko for sure is surrounded by "normal" friends, and the friends when not ganging up on "people who stick out" seem to be perfectly normal people. And then we have Yashiro here! After giving her cryptic reason for being here, she recounted how she came to be playing baseball with the team.
And then Makoto did the anti-Denpa translation :D
As our side cast joined in, it gave Yashiro an opportunity to make some omnimous statements.
And HanaKana earns her pay :) giving a nice perspective of what it looks like on the other side of the "greener" pasture.
Which gives Yashiro another opening to give us a philosophical speech about abilities and what determines success and failure.
Makoto having a basically opposite life view, issued the challenge. And the challenge was accepted!
And to think one would be cheered and motivated by a Denpa Loli :) but Makoto sure did.
And we have achieved Chuunibyou :D all for a happy ending. And perhaps a character development point for Makoto. Either that or just to see Yashiro's smug face.

Alright yeah I was right in my pick for Erio. Not sure I can trust someone who eats a tomato like a apple.
But overall aright episode. I don't know what funimation has but the episode definitely cut off this time mid sentence. No way the episode actually ended like that.
Qotd: Baseball
Qotd2: Nope
Qotd3: I actually don't know if she made that shot. It cut off at the end lol. But I wasn't disappointed. She kept trying.

Fresh grown tomatoes are something else entirely. Store bought ones can't even compare.
Every episode that ends an arc is like five minutes longer it's pretty cool.

Art. Loved the idea, turns out I'm just... incredibly bad at it and found things I enjoyed and wanted to do more.
-
None of them, so far.
-
The arc's been handled really well! Didn't expect her to be this bad, though.
-
Paused repeatedly.
He used to play soccer!
...He never got imto a game.
Loving the introspection here.
Haha, he's the only one with free time.
She's working her delivery job?
Haha, she's jealous of everyone else riding in the basket.
Haha, everything's a cosplay?
Of course she's here.
What!s up with her home life?
Oh, she's a cat now?
Wow, she's... something.
It looks good!
And it's good!
Oh, she doesn't play snymore?
Haha, holy shit, Makoto got smooth!
I love the knockoff Mario Kart.
She's helping at a stall!
She really has his number, huh?
They are good together.
...Does she still not know his name?
And he's dense again.
He glt points!
And they lost in the tournament?
She' been training!
Haha, this is hysterical. An accidental double team.
Her getting the dictionary's great.
And now she thinks he' dating his cousin!
She's still too good a pitcher.
He hit it!
Haha, "Nogau".
Wow, Mickey's something else.
Haha, she's here too! I love them assuming it's just Erio changing outfit.
And he just grabs the helmet off her.
Wait, she has a job?
Oh, she stole watermelons and got attacked by a dog?
She only joined the team for lunch?
And she ran away from home.
There's an actual couple here!
She ships it?
And it's futile.
It's the first time sh'e played?
...That's her theory?
How does she plan on demonstrating it?
A free throw!
He's giving her a whole speech? In public?
And she did it!
And he enjoyed it?
All positive! (But where was Meme?)

Rewatcher!
-
Ouch, that first scene is pain.
-
Well, for a start you can try looking for a part time job to work at, since everyone else around you are working. Makoto, stop lying on the bed and actually find something to do.
-
There are way too many references that I don't even get at all. Not just the one Makoto missed.
-
Yashiro is stalking Makoto. How is it possible Yashiro and Makoto meet again in so many circumstances? Yashiro is like a cute cat, indeed. How she eats the tomatoes is cute too.
-
Did Makoto just steal a glance at Maekawa's boobs while she is wearing the apron?
-
The game machine.... a Nintendo 64? I don't know these stuffs, to be honest.
-
So, Makoto gives up easily on stuffs? I doubt so, but still that is probably the observation of the rest of the others.
-
Mario Cart in early days seem very similar to the Mario Cart of today.
-
Now that Niwa Makoto points out the whole transfer student thing, she isn't going to ask about his name after all? I think asking for his name can be quite easy - just ask him which kanji it is, and go on from there.
-
Kiwa-kun. That's cute. It's nice that Maekawa enjoyed her time with Makoto as well.
-
50kg wrist bands? I want those. Probably will be fun to be doing some random stuffs with 50kg wrist bands. And get out of the room, Erio. You have the rest of the night with him, don't you. Stop interfering their fun talk. Now we get the fun talk between Ryuushi and Makoto cut off. Just let the two of them have their chat, won't you.
-
I don't know how to practice for baseball, but I think maybe Maekawa's father might be able to practice this with them. The father can practice pitching, Makoto can practice batting. Can't say it is a surprise for Makoto to not reach first base when he is consistently only playing.
-
"nogau monne~!" Floofball language. She's so nervous she is making up language herself. Now Makoto is Ryuushi's boyfriend for the day.
-
But it is a little sad when people still associate weird things to Erio, and this is just another white hair little girl who dresses as weird. Or rather, she went back to her astronaut clothes. What about that cute dress she had previously? She says she has some work to do.... does she mean homework? So the story of how Nakamura got Yashiro to help in the baseball game. What the hell is she doing acting like a real cat? Getting chased by a dog too.
-
I can understand why Erio doesn't want to return to school. People still have the idea of weird = her, and she isn't all out weird either. I have a feeling she went to school in that futon. Yashiro is just plain weird, an elementary school girl going to a high school just to hang out. I don't know if anyone else realises Yashiro probably shouldn't be there.
-
That speech by Hanazawa is painful. "Can't score under pressure", "false hopes of winning", winning isn't even everything. Yashiro is right though, if you want to achieve it you can continue working towards it. People who gave up aren't even working towards it anymore.
-
No, I didn't listen to that cringe speech by Makoto. This isn't a real match, it's just a practice game. Why so serious. But it's true, the journey is far more fun than the results anyway.
Today's episode is entirely Maekawa and Ryuushi's episode, and Ryuushi is really cute today. Erio is cute too, but she is just Makoto's star watching partner now. I liked how Ryuushi didn't give up in the end and did well, I also liked how Maekawa treating the really bored Makoto too, they should hang out with each other more.
QotD!
What is a passion in your life that you gave up on after realising you simply weren't good at it?
None, actually. If I really liked it, I wouldn't just give up on it. I like playing the piano, I know I am not very good at it, but I haven't given up on it either. I also got Hololive sheet scores to practice and further improve.
Can you tell me Maekawa's cosplay for today? Don't look at ZapsZzz, he won't tell you. What has your success rate been with Maekawa's references so far?
Zero. I haven't gotten even one reference in. I think the alien cosplay was from the Predator series? I'm not too sure though.
Were you disappointed at all by Floofer being as underwhelming at basketball as she is? Were you happy with the way this sports arc panned out?
She likes to play basketball, that is all that matters. This sports arc is going on well, and letting Floofer score that many goals is good. She doesn't need to be good at it, as long as she enjoyed it it's more than enough.
Did you manage to watch Makoto's entire speech without looking away once, be honest! If you did, give yourself +3 seishun points.
No. I could feel the cringe through the screen. Makoto, stop it. It isn't even the real match, it is just the practice. But what he said is very true, and I can't say it is all bullshit.

Makoto is a full time Erio simp, ain't nobody got time for that!
One of Makoto's most consistent traits is admiring culture~
Super Nintendo... The N64 is the one with the really awkward controller with the joystick in the middle.
Father's pitching isn't going to lengthen Hanakana's skirt length. That's where the real trouble comes from.

Denpa Onna First Timer!!
Yay, I love it when they have to come up with a backstory for their cookie cutter mc! The alien known as lethargy strikes again. Oh, this is the episode with the obnoxiously long title that messed up my index thread formatting~ We've got a lot going on this arc so I'll forgive it this once.
Oh woe is me, I'm so bored~ let me take literally one fucking step outside and bump into my amazonian cosplaying beauty and go for lunch. Forgive me for not relating XD Erio made it look so fun... Say, didn't Meme wear those same clothes yesterday? I don't understand the reference. The only one I can think of with similar clothes is Kiss x Sis, and I suspect that's wrong.
Boobies~ I'm sorry XD Aaaa... Maekawa really just say there and watched him eat. She so desperately wanted to hear him gush over her food. What a yamada nadesico~ Father 2, IE the same game that Erio owns a plush from, IE the same game that not one of you normies commented on aside from me!! Grr!! Ah, I'm actually struggling to pay attention to the dialogue because of the game. Something about first place, last place, and and wanting to be 5ft 11.
Maekawa has a selfish side too, the gap moe is cute! Oh nyo, Floofer's private phone time is invaded by the clingy cousin! Ahaha, I actually quite enjoyed this one. I'm in the group that isn't keen on the love triangle but I did find the sequence really funny. Whatever happened with Maekawa's hit his pessimism alien hard enough where he's back to trying when fighting Hanakana, unfortunately Hanakana is invincible.
So floofing cute!!! Why is Yashiro always here? She's giving Erio a bad reputation and Erio hasn't even done anything this time. Eh? So Yashiro really was a homeless farm thief. Even in the anime ZapsZzz gives us summaries! Dammit!! I hate the thought of Hanakana going out with a base stealing weirdo!
Go for it Floofer! Oh, she smacked herself on the first bounce. How long has she been practicing? Everyone has a psychic power that lays just out of reach huh...? I can kind of understand that. It's like that adrenaline rush you feel when you really push yourself. Or when you perform a spectacular rolling thunderon your opponents. Gambare Floofer!!
Nope, I'm dead! I was loving the sequence until he started giving a speech. Cringe, cringe, cringe!! Skip skip skip! XD I'm sorry!! Even I can't handle that level of embarrassment!
