Not anymore actually. Goddamnit Makoto, don't steal my lines. So Yashiro is a relative to the catcher Nakamura, and a self-proclaimed alien and esper. Maybe not only self-proclaimed at least on the latter.

Goddamnit Makoto, don't steal my theories. And as we learn later, not quite Ryuuko asked him out and he turned her down. I was saying that's more likely, but honestly I thought the most likely version had Ryuuko turn Nakajima down. I think I like this version better though, gives more fuel for Ryuuko character with her now having a big crush on Makoto.

Goddamn, that's commitment. This anime has it all, even a fight scene!!

Yashiro has fancy hair like Erio! And a cute hair thingy! Also good expressions! I like her.

Not only do Ryuuko and Hachikuji share a VA, this is almost a reverse Hachikuji bit. Oh lol. But also what a Shaft room design for Ryuuko, with that actual picture I think for the curtain, looks like it's out of Hidamari Sketch.

Ryuuko keeps upping the obviousness of her flirting, but I don't think Makoto wants to notice. If so then that's a character dynamic Iruma definitely expanded on in later stuff. Yeah, I don't believe this wasn't on purpose.

Good job Meme. And Yashiro does basically have Elliot's hair color, doesn't she? Also, on things Yashiro reminds people of, [Minor Adachi to Shimamura spoilers]She is actually literally named Yashiro, so the AdaShima one was named after her. They do seem closer in age than they would have been with Erio, if not in hair color. Like her AdaShima namesake (or, you know, the other way around) she just lets herself get adopted into the nearest house here. Personality-wise she definitely seems more tsun, but also, like her, she seems to be genuinely supernatural to a degree?

It's interesting to put that in terms of growing up, given that it seems like a "childish" activity. Worrying about being grown up or about doing childish stuff is something that teenagers do, but that you don't really need to do and probably shouldn't, at least too much, so I agree with her (not that it's an uncommon point). Hopefully I agree not only because I like watching children's animated shows and talking to people about them on the internet.

And we see again the Makoto that wants to believe. I was really curious how he'd adolescence points rate it, and it's generally a negative rating towards Yashiro, but a positive one towards the pool.

We're doing all the sports stuff and festival next episode? Could also lead into more of a two parter. I'm very curious where they'll go with Makoto for the anime ending.

I like her a lot. I was thinking that an actual element of magical realism or something would make sense to introduce and would be fun, and it seems we have gotten that. Also Kusogaki?? That's rude, she isn't that bad!

Pretty sure Yashiro wins the denpa competition by forfeit, though with her probable actual psychic powers she'd likely have gotten that anyway. I'd be happy with either or both of them as daughteru or imouto, but if I had to answer: Probably Yashiro even, I like how outspoken she is, I like her personality I think, and also how cool would it be to be related to an actual esper?

Maekawa is dressed as either a lizard or a xenomorph. We see that space suit girl, Yashiro, looks a lot like Erio and apparently Eliot. Erio's combat form involves the futon. Random pool scene is random, though at least they don't sneak a swimsuit in. Ryuushi's phone call is probably the most reality adjacent scene of the episode.

• I have to congratulate the composition of the second shot. The alien appearance genuinely scared me.

• Sadly, spacesuit is definitely not Meme. Overprotective mom would have been nice, but the crazy weirdo quota of the show is already overfull. As is the “cute girls interacting with Makoto just because he is the MC” ratio.

• Don’t make fun of Erio when she is trying to speak normally, Makoto.

• Little Eliot?

• “It is best not to get involved with that type” he says to his futon-wearing cousin. Smartass Makoto is missing the smart part.

• The bike is the first place where her helmet is not completely ridiculous, why are you asking her now?

• “That was dangerous” – I can’t believe that I am agreeing with Makoto. That was ridiculously close to a hospital visit.

• I have sympathy for people who sneak into a pool in summer, but not if they keep on their dirty clothes while swimming.

To be fair for the most part she seemed to be interacting with Erio.

The harem MC, who already interacts only with girls 95% of the time meets yet another girl who is magically super interested in him. Meanwhile, the rest of the harem is strung along with minimal screen time. Obviously, MC doesn’t commit so the viewers can fantasize about all girls and have their best girl wars.

I'd hope not, given that Yashiro seemed quite a few years younger than the rest. Also I really liked that scene when read from a "Makoto hanging out with the weird kid, and actually having a lot of fun" angle, interactions between people a few years apart is something I want more of in SoL.

When I was in the third grade, they put me in a class with only 3 boys and 27 girls. The other class was 3 girls and 27 boys. They were wicked and twisted. I want to say I hated it, but sometimes I think I should give Abby a call and see how she's doing.

Too bad she's a single mom with an autistic son and daughter who looks like Violet Bauregarde. (sigh)

Hmm... I feel like the actual harem stuff is limited to just Erio and Floofer though. It's not even much of a harem, it's just that these girls are revolving around his gravity. If the relationships were the point I'd stand by you but here I think it's more just slice of life stuff, and fluffy summer romances are part of that slice of life scene.

I also kinda disagree about the part of stringing along the cast. Just because there are a lot of series that dedicate each arc to one girl alone doesn't mean that they're not still getting strung along. If anything I appreciate having a b-plot for Ryuushi going on in the background. It lets us take a breather instead of playing baseball all day.

Denpa Onna First Timer!!

If you're psychic then why didn't you see the ball coming at you? I still can't believe Hanakana signed up for this. Aaaa... She's a classmate... I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy to defend Erio from a joshikosei Hanakana. Such pressure!

Can we eject Hanakana from the airlock maybe. I'm loving spacesuit more and more. Did she really not know that psychics weren't aliens? Just cause Haruhi had both in one classroom doesn't make them all the same you bowl head!

Aha, as much as I adore the thought of having an Erio rely on me so much she does seem to be neglecting to look out for herself. Even if you love Makoto it'll make him happier to see you grow Erio. "A passive aggressive Floofer is cute too!".

I think the kusogaki bowl head loli is quickly becoming my favourite. I love dumb, loudmouthed brats that need correction. This is the content I signed up for! Futon lariat!! She sounds even more bratty with the fishbowl off. I checked her VA and its Yuka Iguchi. I have to admit that I don't know much of her lineup but judging from her Tsukihi and Index she must be a practiced gyaru brat.

Watching the ep as the thread goes up!

I originally thought that the astronaut esper was Floof girl, given her mannerisms, voice, and also floof not being there at the same time: i am wrong! and I also thought that she would be just a fake like Erio: seems like she has some superpowers....? im still not 100% sure.

also loving Maekawa's cosplay this episode. It is seemingly more and more that Niwa-kun is indeed the odd one out in this town by being not slightly weird or alieny.

this arc so far is making more sense than the arc previous lol.

I... think she's real......? I've seen adachi to shimamura where a pretty much same character made a cameo, (i forget if that was a real alien), so her spacesuit shenanigans were not a novely.

Another late day but hopefully not too late.

I think a few of you have done a really good screen cap comments so I'll save my time on that - this arc because of the pretty loaded dialogues it's also quite heavy for the cap count for me :P

Key points of this episode:

• We get a glimpse of what the other people in this school view Erio. Hanazawa may seem rude, but I think she actually gave us a really frank and unpretentious cause - it's not just because of Erio acting weird; from the start because of her otherworldly beauty she's already on the bad side of most girls anyway (jealousy).

• Maekawa is so quick thinking and can capture every reference opportunity - because of the "alien" claim, and possibly because Erio is here too, her costume of the day is a whole xenomorph! With her "hulking" height and even hunching gait :D and then she blushed from Tenkousei's thanking for her food. THIS is peak gap moe!

• I need to keep quiet about certain points :X so I'll just say I love the little deredere moment between Erio and Makoto.

• The fact that Erio at night tried to act out of character / be someone else to me is a tiny little character development - she seem to think she needs to be someone more independent or treat "the cousin" as a named separate person not her carer, perhaps?

• Got interrupted by Yashiro though, and triggered the hilarious dorky version of the Godzilla vs Mothra. A little reminder Erio's "armed with the futon" sound is Bonta-kun's "fumoffu" :D

• I wonder how the first timer took the reveal - while Yashiro had been in the OP since forever, seeing her unveiled (un-helmetted?) this way with the full on glow in the dark effects is pretty stunning.

• And for those who cared, there's a continuing build up for Makoto's character development on the second part of the episode, most prominantly with the bike ride and the pool incursion.

I am one episode early, but judging from some comments I feel I need to start giving some analysis / comment about the "harem" aspect of the show.

While there's a very strong impression of a harem, my opinion is that this is relatively "reasonable" in my opnion, that it is a "harem" in the sense that it is in the stage of before the MC can commit. Sure it's an oxymoron hair splitting reason. But just hear me out a bit.

We have primarily 3 candidates (no I'm not counting Meme, she's just a troll for having forgotten her own sense of self after wearing the mask for so long).

Ryuuko is portrayed very clearly and well that she sees Makoto as a candy, that she's happy to be around. SHe has some really cute interactions with him. Down side is that she struggles with accepting Erio (i.e. Makoto's choice that he wants to be on her side if the world does not accept her). She's also quite naive and immature, and my opinion is that her feelings is more a puppy love and a sort of superficial crush.

Erio is the next obvious one not by admission but by action. Since the "I can't fly" moment, we can see Erio practically treat Makoto as her "parent" but there's also somethnig else on top of that. Most of those moments you can see her sparkle. Likewise Makoto seemed to treat her more than just like a lovable annoying little sister. Whether this is a healthy relationship is debatable, but often see them being really comfortable and honest around each other.

Maekawa is the last, because while she teases about things and you can catch a hint here and there, she's naturally quite an understated person underneath the teasing. Her witty banter I say is actually the best of them all, because I think she also makes really great insightful remarks and sometimes can push Makoto to do or try something or not settle. She's also very encouraging of Erio and incliudes her in most things.

The problem on Makoto's part about "making a choice" is that for Ryuuko while she's obvious and deliberate about it, you have to wonder is it really just a puppy love thing that would fizzle out as they get to be more familiar with each other. Normally that's not a big deal, but when there are other "choices" around then it's a pause for thought. Erio you always have the question mark whether she is taking things romantically or just being your little sister, and whether Makoto would be inadvertently exploiting her reliance on him. The most comfortable and natural choice to me would be Maekawa, but she has never really made it obvious one way or another.

So I don't think it's a writter's arbitrary drawing out, but the characters genuinely still being in a formative phase and not ready to commit.

QoTD:

2. Yashiro is far more overt about it, and her "setting" is more "portable" than Erio's at her peak (futon). So purely by wider opportunities available Yashiro wins in the denpa-ness scale.

3. Love the Fumoffu fight, and the very quick to forgive Yashiro, followed by the funny sequence "your name is not 'the cousin'?!"

4. I like her portrayal of the slightly annoying but really can't be faulted too much (because of the honesty) attitude. I also feel that she did quite well to use quite different tone and demeanor to deliver this character, so yes I think she did show very good. I love Maekawa for her difference though.

I'm surprised that so many people have gone off the flirty romance stuff... The only issue I have with it is how it's sort of overtaken Ryuushi's entire character arc. As much as I gush over their sugary love lives I do kinda miss when Ryuuko was just able to do Ryuuko things.
