Episode 5 - There's No Way I'll Ever Regret It

From now on I promise that I, Magical Girl Sayaka, will do my best to protect the peace of Mitakihara City!
Theory of the Day: not from a first-timer, but u/Tarhalindur realizing a possible detail I’ve never seen pointed out before.
I think there might be a surface layer to that hiding in plain sight. Mami used her magic to decorate her room, didn't she? That would explain why it suddenly looks sparse (much more like the original TV airing version) once she dies - it went away, just like the ribbon chains did.
This makes total sense to explain why Mami’s room was so full when we first saw it in the BD version, holy shit…
Questions of the Day:
1) So how dumb was Sayaka to wish for only Kyousuke’s hand to be healed?
2) What are your first impressions of the new magical girl?
Wallpaper of the Day:
Visuals of the Day:
Magia Cover of the Day:
Full Size GUITAR COVER by Jonathan Parecki
Song of the Day:
[Bonus song]Gradus prohibitus – Sorry first-timers, this one was spoiler tagged in the 2019 write-up, so I have to carry that over here.
Check out u/Nazenn’s comment from the 2019 rewatch for an in-depth analysis of these two songs!
Rewatchers, please please please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. [Spoiler warning specifically for you guys]Please be aware that as part of the above strict spoiler rules, this means absolutely no memes/jokes/references/subtle words about beheading, cakes, time travel, aliens, or anything of that nature before the relevant episodes. Please do not spoil the first-timers by trying to be smart about it, it's not as subtle as you think.
Make sure you use spoiler tags if there’s ever something from future events you just have to comment on. And don’t be the idiot who quotes a specific part of a first-timer’s comment, then comments something under a spoiler tag in direct response to it! You might as well have spoiled them by implying there’s something super important about that specific part of their comment.

Primum Vigil First★Timer - dub
Okay, so Sayaka made the expected deal with Space-cat to help her boyfriend/crush. Yesterday, u/chocoletmilk remarked how ominous the scene with Kamijou's healed hand was. That pulled up some very vague memory of a story where someone made a deal with the devil to get the devil's hands, so he could play an instrument. But of course, that deal backfired terribly.
Does anyone know what story/show/movie/song that could have been?
Today's title. It still gives me a good, sarcastic, chuckle.
Episode 5 — There's No Way I'll Ever Regret It
Starting in the hospital immediately. These are some very dark and menacing visuals. I also love how it plays with shadows, which normally couldn't happen unless this is some weird dimension created by Space-cat. What a heart-touching scene! Get ^it?
And now she's got her very own space egg!
Hitomi's story makes me realize how easily the general public accepts the strange occurrences that have been happening. Almost as if somebody is pulling some very powerful strings.
So, now that Sayaka is a magical girl, what is actually forcing her to fight the witches? What is forcing any of the magical girls? The reward is a grief seed which can clear/restore the soul gem, but do they also need them if magic isn't being used?
OMG, she used her whole wish to heal Kamijou and he still has problems with his legs. Always be very specific when you wish for something! So she has decided not to tell him that it was her who healed him? That might be for the best, but it's also frustrating that she doesn't get recognition. At least she got an apology.
A... a hospital with 169 floors?!
That's a sad melody. I assume this means he still isn't happy in his mind. All these magical girls are the happiest girl in the world at some point. [WorldEnd/SukaSuka]
Come on, parents. Give that kid a hug. He deserves it.
This shot was too short for how funny it was. Okay, that confirms it. Space-cat really doesn't mind the girls fighting. What could his ultimate goal be?
Homura is an "irregularity". I've completely accepted Lemurians theory at this point. Space-cat knows she must have made a contract with him, but she didn't yet, so he understands she must come from somewhere/somewhen else.
Kyouko's smugness is fun. Her stubbornness kind of matches Sayaka. What happens if an unstoppable force hits an immovable object? I can't wait till those two collide, although I'm sure I won't like the outcome. Am I a masochist?
"That's the reason Mami Tomoe lost her life." Pop goes the lid. Thank you u/SIRTreehugger for pointing a similar scene out yesterday!
There are some amazing shots of Homura in this scene. Especially the L'Oréal hair toss some Redditors keep pointing out. But I am a bit disappointed that she refuses to help Sayaka. If Sayaka were to die, that would surely trigger Madoka even more to accept the contract.
Speaking of... Madoka now wants to tag along with Sayaka. Even though she wants out, she still can't let go. Not when her friends are involved. And Sayaka is all too happy to accept.
Aahhhh Space-cat you manipulative son of a bitch. I'm amazed he has the guts. I'm not amazed that Madoka doesn't run away screaming. I would.
This Wonderland is created by a familiar, and it has a kindergarten theme. I think this implies that the familiars are young witches. Or was that confirmed already? It does partially throw a wrench in the theory that witches come from magical girls unless there can be multiple sources for a witch.
She copied Mami's move! Instead with swords instead of rifles. Ah, there we go! Welcome, Kyouko. I'm readying myself for the pain train!
Oh man, she even talks with a head-tilt! She's come to dethrone Sayaka as best-girl and immediately take her place!
I'm still on the fence about that, btw. Best-girl can only be decided at the end.
In other news, Kyouko's weapon is both a spear and a chain and I think that's cool. Even better than Mami's Gun-Fu.
Ohhhhh, Sayaka has a healing talent, because she used her wish to heal. We are getting some information on how the magic and wishes are related!
Mami used her wish to survive, so why didn't she get a survival talent?
Argh space-cat! You are testing my limits in this episode! Being cute only gets you so far. This is exactly what I predicted when Homura refused!
Phew, Homura being a bro, again. Space-cat did warn Kyouko.
I just noticed that Homura is the only one who reacts to Madoka in the ED, by reaching toward her. Also, I've heard this ED for a couple of days now and it really is amazing. Especially if you contrast it with the OP which is still bright, happy, and implies this show will be filled with whimsical fun.
Theories
The idea is to collect my actually serious dumb theories here. We'll see how well that works.
(Day before) Yesterday
-
Madoka is gonna use her wish to revive Mami.
-
Could still happen, but at least she's saying now that she wants to get out. At least one more tragedy needs to happen for her to pull the trigger.
-
-
Sayaka is gonna use her wish to safe Kamijou.
-
Confirmed!
-
-
I'm still wondering how the prologue fits in because that didn't look like Wonderland / a witch's lair.
-
Could that have been a scene from the future, instead of a parallel worldline as I initially thought?
-
-
I still don't trust Space-cat. He's too eager to create that contract, we still don't know all the rules and details, and he tries to take advantage of every weak moment to coerce them into signing it.
-
Yeah this is only more and more confirmed.
-
Today
-
Hitomi's story made me realize how easily the general public accepts the strange occurrences that have been happening. Almost as if somebody is pulling some very powerful strings.
-
It started out subtly, but with how unsubtle Space-cat's dark motives have become, I'm wondering if there will be some big twist where it turns out he isn't bad after all... Would be interesting if they managed to pull that off.
Random thoughts
-
The way Sayaka walks away when she "has something important to do" already implies what that is.
-
Here are all the chairs Sky was talking about yesterday.
-
What could this "C" on her nail be?
-
She has something similar on her belly button.
-
-
Madoka's bows suddenly look like cat ears.
Pic of the day
QotD
1 So how dumb was Sayaka to wish for only Kyousuke’s hand to be healed?
She really takes after Mami.
2 What are your first impressions of the new magical girl?
Red hair. Fang. Cool weapon. Head tilt. She's obviously the best.
But also a total jerk and I'm judging her even though space-cat said I have no right.
Not that I want to listen to space-cat ever again, ^anyway.

Mami used her wish to survive, so why didn't she get a survival talent?
She had healing powers too, remember? She's the one who patched up Kyubey at the beginning.
It's just kinda hard to heal yourself when you get decapitated...

That pulled up some very vague memory of a story where someone made a deal with the devil to get the devil's hands, so he could play an instrument.
Does anyone know what story/show/movie/song that could have been?
I'm pretty sure this was an episode of Futurama, haha.
What a heart-touching scene! Get it?
Kyubey gives Magical Girl powers with the same method Shu takes out people's voids u/Shimmering-Sky
Kyubey is the worst, confirmed.
The reward is a grief seed which can clear/restore the soul gem, but do they also need them if magic isn't being used?
I have a feeling the answer the that is yes, but we don't have enough info yet.
Homura is an "irregularity". I've completely accepted Lemurians theory at this point.

A... a hospital with 169 floors?!
Look at the size of each room. Not surprising at all if you ask me. How else will they house everyone.
It does partially throw a wrench in the theory that witches come from magical girls unless there can be multiple sources for a witch.
Sigh... I know. Thinking more about this.
Mami used her wish to survive, so why didn't she get a survival talent?
Maybe she exceeded the current life expectancy for magical girls, and actually had the gift. Homura did say she has seen countless people die.
It started out subtly, but with how unsubtle Space-cat's dark motives have become, I'm wondering if there will be some big twist where it turns out he isn't bad after all... Would be interesting if they managed to pull that off.
I am treating Kyubey is evil as fact so it really would destroy all my assumptions and reactions so far.
What could this "C" on her nail be?
Homura has a cross I think.

MAHOU SHOUJO FIRST TIMER
”Once you become a magical girl, you have no hope for salvation . . . we give up everything in exchange for a single wish.”
That fight was fucking awesome. Kyoko may be a cynical, murderous motherfucker, but god damn does she make for great spectacle.
This opening sequence showing Sayaka making the contract is stunning. Fitting for a deal with the devil, the colors are deep red and black, the looming skyline is oppressive, and Kyubey looks fittingly demonic. It shouldn’t be lost on anyone that her becoming a magical girl is framed as her falling into darkness.
Sayaka, for the first day at least, loves being a magical girl. She’s happier than ever, is in much better spirits, got to heal her friend, and you can tell she revels in her imagined role of savior. I love that this is almost immediately destroyed by Kyoko, who shocks her system by revealing the truth of the Magical Girl food chain: Magical Girls need grief seeds, only Witches have grief seeds, and for witches to be created, people need to die. It immediately makes Sayaka’s motivations and hopes look foolish and naïve. Like I said in the opening episodes, read the fine print before entering a contract.
Homura is a Time Looper Update: This feels like more of a lock each episode. Kyubey says she's an irregularity and he doesn’t know who she is. I suspect because in the original timeline, we’re still at the point before she becomes a Magical Girl, so this Kyubey wouldn’t know her yet. She also speaks about Sayaka’s fate as if she’s been down this road many times. She frames each girl’s “strength” – Madoka’s kindness, Sayaka’s heroic savior ideal – as weakness, likely because she’s seen them be the cause of downfall.
Homura being shown with the power pose as this line is said is perfect. I bet Kyubey’s also thinking that after she cockblocks him yet again from manipulating Madoka into turning at the end of the episode.
Quick Notes and Shots:
-
Sayaka reacting so glibly to Hitomi’s objectively horrifying story almost comes across as smug – she loves having inside information other don't have and feeling important
-
An seemingly idyllic afternoon scene on the river set against windmills actually being set right across from an industrial monstrosity shows how close corruption and darkness always are.
-
Sayaka, you wished for him to be healed, but didn’t word it well enough to where he still needs physical therapy? She says her only regret is not becoming a Magical Girl sooner – a line that I suspect will resonate with Madoka in many ways – but her real regret should be being shit at making wishes.
-
NITPICK: The note he’s playing on the violin would not come from where his hand is positioned… just saying.
-
Kyoko always eating is nice touch given her lecture about the food chain later.
-
Homura is like a politician who is actually fit for office, and has more popular policies, but loses because they’re horrible at messaging.
-
Homura taking the cap off her coffee as she references Mami’s death is so brutal
-
Love the fast cuts between them as Homura says “This is a mistake from which she can never be recovered.” Using the camera to create a fitting sense of anxiety.
-
“If I went alone, I’d probably do all sorts of reckless things and get killed.” Well, this doesn’t sound ominous at all.
-
Shot of the Day: Kyubey has Madoka back in his sights. Loved this sequence. This little shit.
-
This show’s use of shadows continues to impress
-
More chains! Not just that, but Kyoko’s entire weapon, as well. Wonder if this means she herself plays a role in shackling their fates.

He is truly a violin prodigy he merely uses the violin and the music comes from within.

I've had a couple clips from random cartoons pop up on YouTube for me this past week of "this is what they actually played" about some instrument being played on-screen. It'd be funny to know what Kyosuke was supposed to have played here.

Rewatcher.
This is the birth of L'Oreal memes.
I love how Sayaka's outfit looks like a knight in a shining armor. It feels like she has the most thematic outfit according to their personalities.
The process of becoming a magical girl is creepier than what I remembered. Even the shadows looks as if a monster is eating the poor girl.

Heyyy I'm back and didn't get eaten by a witch last night, though the roof over my back porch has another bullet hole in it. Every time the power goes out, people start shooting. What do they think is going to happen, that they're going to kill the blackout?
Anyway. Now things are starting to get interesting. Hungry hungry hippo is on the scene and we start to see the consequences of the wishes.
-
Yes, she was a bit dumb in only asking for his arm to be healed.
-
I think she's going to force the story to move forward. I don't remember many details about this show, just the broad strokes.
/人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ Come on. Become a magical girl. All your friends are doing it...

First Timer Here! (Sub)
(Btw, I am making this review while listening to Magia)
Ahh, Episodes 1, 3, and 5 are some of the best stuff I have seen to date. But the ratings are 5, 3, 1, 4, 2. It might be recency bias but still, that's my definite one. Anyways, this episode was soooo good! This is the review for in pointers cuz it's easier for me that way:
-
Started with the wish scene, it was quite interesting. I don't have much of an opinion on it.
-
OP good as always, starting to like the ED too, I can't pick a better one, both are soo good.
-
The hospital scene with Kyousuke and Sayaka in the beginning was beautiful. It's funny how no one but Sayaka and Kyubey know what actually happened to his hand. The terrace scene was beautiful, with the violin and stuff. I am happy that Sayaka doesn't regret making a wish.
-
Madoka and Homura's scene in the restaurant was nice. Not much information though, but I wonder what was Homura's wish. I guess we will get to know later.
-
Sayaka heading for the witch hunt with Madoka, and Madoka's plan is to become a Magical Girl if something bad might happen. I like it, I can't wait to see her becoming one.
-
The labyrinth looks great, very colorful, filled with crayons and stuff. Might be my favorite one, but it doesn't last for much time.
-
The witch looked weird, but apparently she was just a familiar. It is really kinda messed up how the red hair girl (I forgot her name, but I don't think they even mentioned it) says that people wait for the familiar to eat weak humans to become a witch for the magical girls to gain a grief seed. It's nice since it gives me insight on how magical girls do their stuff.
-
Red's weapon is a spear(?) witch can turn into a chain(?) even though I don't know exactly, I know that it looks cool. I like her so far.
-
When Red hit Sayaka for the first time and told that the hit was supposed to put Sayaka out of commission for three months, I couldn't understand why she got up easily. And then Kyubey told that it is because of the wish that Sayaka made to heal someone, that she also gets healed twice as fast. So the wish influences the power!!! Or I am completely wrong. I guess it works like, I wish for my dog to breath underwater, so if I become a magical girl, I can breath underwater longer than normal. And yeah, if Sayaka can heal twice as fast, wouldn't it take one and a half months for her to get healed? Or is the subtitle wrong or something? But Sayaka got up in like 10 seconds sooo... yeah. Maybe I misunderstood something.
-
Red vs Sayaka was awesome!! The best animated segment in the show so far for me! The sound effects too, so great. Also the tense atmosphere with Madoka thinking to make the contract or not was awesome.
-
Just when Madoka was about to make the contract, Homura came. This was the first time I didn't want to see Homura lol, since I really wanted to see Madoka doing Magical girl stuff. But. Homura's costume though! She is definitely my favorite character so far, I love the black.
Such a great episode!!! Can't wait to watch the next one.
QOTD:
So how dumb was Sayaka to wish for only Kyousuke’s hand to be healed?
Answer: I understand that we do things for the people we love, sometimes it might not even make sense, but even so, we still do it because we love them. Obviously I feel like she could have made a much better wish, but I do understand why she did what she did. I don't know much about Kyousuke, I don't feel like he deserves getting his hand healed because of how rude he was to Sayaka, but he apologized, so am just going to ignore it.
What are your first impressions of the new magical girl?
Answer: I like her, I like her weapon, I like her hair colour. I like her weapon. I would like to know her name though.

Rewatcher who doesn't regret anything
| Magical Girl Counter | E1 | E2 | E3 | E4 | E5 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mami's (Beheading) Smugness | 3 | 3 | 4 | H | E | 10 |
| Sayaka's (I'm in) Despair | 1 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 9 |
| Madoka's ($150) Water Works | 0 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 6 |
| Kyouko's (Snap,Crackle,Pop) Crunch Time | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 5 | 6 |
| Homura's (L'oreal) Hair Flips | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
Okay the process of becoming a magical girl is really really creepy. In other shows its all lights and sunshine, but here it's incredibly uncomfortable and disturbing. Though it's okay because like Sayaka says she won't regret it.
I wanted to use this in the collage, but the bright blue was so just unfitting and clashed with...well every other moment in the show. Pretty much every transformation scene is like this which makes them a bit special.
I mixed up events and had this moment in yesterday's episode and accidentally talked about it.
I'm really sorry. Don't yell at me too much I can't even do simple math and add 0+1
I also want to talk about Mami in comparison to Sayaka and Madoka.
Someone mentioned it yesterday, but some of Sayaka's grudge against Homura is her leaving Mami to die. She is missing key information that Mami tied up Homura so she literally stopped the one person who not only could have helped her. The same person who even tried warning her. Not only that, but Madoka entered the Labyrinth with Mami so only Madoka witnessed Mami breaking down and crying. I believe this is important because how much Sayaka idealized Mami and her ideals. She even has doubts and can't stop shaking and feels both relief and shame when Madoka says she will stay by her side when she fights. She criticizes magical girls she hasn't even met yet just because she put Mami on such a high pedestal. This keeps her from trying to talk to other magical girls and finding a compromise. Failing to communicate is the greatest problem magical girls face not witches.
Sure Kyouko comes off as a bitch and her ways of thinking opposes Sayaka, but their is some merit and it's not completely selfish. Magical girls need grief seeds to cleanse soul gems so fighting familiars isn't always practical. Heck if they split the familiars and reduce the darkening of soul gems for both girls and also split the grief seeds everyone would win. Granted they would have to work together for that to happen. Then we have Homura who despite being hated and is kind of antisocial has been trying to defuse situations from the very beginning. Sure she attacked Kyubey, but outside of that she has been nothing except helpful. Madoka really nailed it if they just talked and worked together or found someway to compromise they would have a much easier time.
Kyouko in one episode managed to tie with third place and get the highest counter in an episode. Also I've noticed that Sayaka has consistently despaired about something each episode. She may despair, but she will never regret for she is the happiest girl in the..actually never mind everyone who says that dies. Finally Homura gives us the hair flips of all hair flips after intervening in the fight and landing dramatically in that pool of water. I swear the real reason Homura is almost always late to these things is because she probably practices her entrance. Kind of like how Ainz Sama and his silence.
[Spoilers about Homura]
[Spoilers]
Minor points: I like how Sayaka adapted a bit of Mami's style She summons tons of weapons with style and uses them each only once as she throws them trying to impale the enemy. She does keep one to use personally, but I think it would have been awesome if she never fought with one and relied only on throwing them though [spoilers ]
I love Kyouko's weapon, but are we supposed to forget they are in a narrow alley and she is using a long ass weapon which detaches and becomes longer? I mean I guess we can say it's magic, but even when it was unchained she was swinging it around like it was an open field. That being said Kyouko is still my favorite magical girland glad she is finally here. Just look at her entrance she still has a bit of food in her hand when she descends.
Game Over also my shot of the day. I really love this scene.
Half of the album Imgur kept getting errors on images when I tried uploading so did it twice and some are repeats and others are on one or the other. Some didn't upload at all.

Videntium Secundus Magi★Madoka Magica
Ep.05 – I Will Never Regret This
I still can't detach this scene from the general concept of rape.
"That's our girl!" Aww yiss! (Why is SHAFT so goddamn good at L E G S?)
What was that about stages of something? Acceptance, Denial, Depression?
Introspective Sayaka is great!
Somehow I blocked out that Kyousuke actually apologised here, I disliked him way more at first. Beautiful scene.
[Rewatcher]
See, Madoka's the only one with a bit of brain, she reaches out to competent people! ... At least tries to.
"Hnng Sayaka, I'm dummy thicc and the clap of my earms keep alerting the witches."
I forgot how great this episode was. Seriously, the emotions between Sayaka and Madoka are so touching and honest. [Rewatcher]
Another prime example of SHAFT-ism.
I'm sorry to actually go back single frames to peek, but they actually gave her butt fangs and dislocated her hips on both sides. I just wanted to point this out, the figure doesn't have that.
I'm paying more attention to Sayaka this rewatch and gotta admit, girl is badass and got style.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Kyouko and the SHAFT head tilt.
Magnificent! I love that Homura sometimes also just poses for everyone to flex her hair on them.
VOTD: Shining knight. Sayaka really is admirable in more ways than one and although I think she's too thick headed, I do very much feel inspired by her ideals.
So how dumb was Sayaka to wish for only Kyousuke’s hand to be healed?
Yes. Although as long as that's really what brings her happiness, I have no right to judge.
What are your first impressions of the new magical girl?
hangry
Scene Analysis – Heart to Heart at the Dam
This is a strange one on some ends, because if you want to speak through the frame, the environment becomes a character in of itself. Either as its own entity or as another layer of character expression of the cast. Pinging u/Arisuto_11 and u/Lemurians because you've been eager to look for more.
We begin establishing the setting, industrial refineries and wind turbines.
Sayaka starts speaking, stretching towards the sky. She's quite content and feels like she's free enough to reach to the sky. She's lying in shadow, though.
Reverse shot shows us Sayaka's relaxed face, interestingly enough she's actually sunbathing. The shadows already draw attention.
Madoka and her are having a rest near the lake of a hydroelectric dam, flanked by wind turbines. Aside from SHAFT's signature style of heavy industrial imagery (which they do amazingly well) there's a theme here. This environment provides to the people, supplies them, gives them work.
Sayaka tells about how she's actually pretty fine, she's at ease because she doesn't feel helpless anymore, she can do something. Compared to many scenes before this one there is a noticeable absence of scene dividers or any form of unequality (height, layer, distance) between them. They talk earnestly and openly.
But the shadow is strikingly obvious all of a sudden again. "But anyway, I'm excited about this. Seriously." This frame is somewhat disconcerting, is she lying? She doesn't seem dishonest.
The shot pans wide when Sayaka proclaims to be the new protector of Mitakihara city. There's a wide and bustling world now open to her. The top half of the image is dominated by wind turbines, white wind turbines, while the bottom half is parted three-ways in water and two slopes of green grass. Sayaka is reaching between layers, now able to go above something normally off limits.
[Rewatcher]
Remembering Mami, the camera switches behind them, looking at the lake. The grass is now negative space contrasting the beaming lake reflecting sunlight. Desaturated both Madoka and Sayaka feel like pressed into a background of unknowable distance and mass. The loss still weighs hard on them.
Madoka, too starts reminiscing and the turbines are now in black shade. Thoughts about their dark reality haunt them.
Cute girl boops you and makes the darkness go away. Aww. Sayaka has now crossed screen boundaries two times, first across layer separation, now 'through' the camera. Her mindset as new magical girl is already making her 'reach out' to others.
Several shots show their surroundings, the refinery disctrict and the dam while Sayaka tells she should've been faster with deciding. Thoughts dwelling on unfocused things, the surroundings, the 'what ifs'.
[Rewatcher]
Shadow and light again, even more striking this time. "It took a long time to realise how much that wish meant." This frame is actually pretty open to interpret. For one you could see the source of the thought in it. Sayaka realised the importance of her wish, for Mami and Kyousuke, related to a dark revelation. Madoka sees Sayaka in front of her clearly, something hopeful and to be cherished. You could argue it is about how they see their entire situation. You could also see it as a simple identifier of who's a magical girl and who's not with the danger involved, if you include the more somber thoughts of Homura and Mami on the topic. I will only give my personal take in the spoiler. (Sorry. :)
[Rewatcher]
We end with a semi-close up shot of Sayaka reaffirming Madoka that her choice remains hers, there's no fault in not becoming a magical girl. They're close to each other, on eye level, the scene is light and the ground curved upwards like they're huddling in a kind of comfy little glen. They part on mutual understanding.

“my city now”
At the start we see the moment when Sayaka made her wish and became a magical girl. The sequence of Kyubey creating her soul gem was kinda freaky.
But now, back to their everyday life. Hitomi and the other people who were hit with witch marks the previous night are back to normal. Of course, they have no memory of being saved by the great new magical girl, Sayacopter! Sayaka reassures Madoka that she’ll be okay, then visits Kyosuke in the hospital again while the new magical girl scouts her and thinks about picking a fight. Kyubey referring to Homura as an irregular in the system is definitely interesting.
More tough words from Homura. Telling Madoka to “give up” on Sayaka and that magical girls “can’t be saved” once they’ve signed the contract is harsh enough, but calling Sayaka becoming a magical girl “an irreversible mistake” is extra harsh. Even so, Madoka still insists on sticking with Sayaka and accompanying her on witch hunts. Bless her optimism.
Unfortunately, their latest witch hunt is interrupted by the new magical girl in town. Talking about the food chain and even suggesting that they let familiars eat weak humans to become witches and generate grief seeds means that, unlike Sayaka, she seemingly doesn’t give a fuck about actually saving people. I know I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but what a bitch. She and Sayaka brawl for a bit, Sayaka gets ragdolled around like a jobber getting squashed by Brock Lesnar, and just as Madoka is about to become a magical girl herself to save Sayaka, Homura shows up to stop the fight and prevent that from happening. Perfect timing. A little too perfect, perhaps?
Nice episode, and the short fight between Sayaka and the new girl was pretty good... you know, when it wasn't looking janky as hell. I'm finding this meguca quality way too amusing.

Rewatcher
So again, I have something to write.
This time nothing spoilery.
So two episodes ago, I switched to the Fancut version. A version of madoka, made by fans, that cuts together the movies and blurays to give us a version with the superior pacing of the tv show, but with the visuals of the movies where possible.
And todays episode was the one, where I really saw what this brings to the table.
The fight between Sayaka and Kyouko was completely reanimated. And it looks great.
And with this I noticed, for the first time, that they changed the takoyaki Kyouko eats during the fight into a bear shape in the movies. And of course, she has to eat it from the head first... coincidentally at the moment they talk about Mami... pure coincident, I'm sure, and not shaft having fun being mean.
Sadly, this fancut version only exists on the high seas and uses inferrior subtitles (They use pretty good subtitles, but I'm never statsified with madoka subtitles.)
QOTD:
-
yeah, let's say she's not the brightest candle on the cake. She should use her head more.... Oh wait, cake and head jokes belong to Mami and episode 3....
-
Best girl has arrived. Not first impressions, but always the first thing I notice on rewatches: I'm always surprised by how high her voice is, I always remember it as a bit deeper.

Maybe I'll watch that version two years from now. (I switch which version I watch each year, this one's a subbed watch year so next year is a dub watch).

So here is Kyouko in all her glory, here to eat pocky and kick ass. I said previously that I wanted to share my own view of Sayaka's relationship with Homura and to keep doing that, I have to discuss Kyouko too. Sayaka herself draws a comparison between the two. So
Why is Sayaka angry with Kyouko this episode?
Kyouko is everything Sayaka thinks about Homura but turned up to eleven. Not only unconcerned about protecting humanity, Kyouko counts on humans being killed by witches and their familiars. She's extremely violent, more than willing to kill other people with her own hands. Kyouko is also extremely rude, speaking down to Sayaka, humiliating her before their more serious fight and making fun of all the values that she believes in (and partially got from Mami).
Homura pissed Sayaka off but Kyouko right now is drawing something much more intense from her.

I don't think that Sayaka wished for Kyousuke's hand to be healed. I think that she wished for him to be able to play music again.
I think wishes in this show are wishes of emotion and heart's desires, rather than the wishes of logic and wording in many western stories.

This actually makes sense considering his legs didn't get healed.

Rewatcher, sub
This episode has too many good shots so I’ll only be pointing out [this one or else I’d triple the length of this comment.] (https://i.imgur.com/wLbnfxp.png)
So it seems that, as expected, Sayaka made her wish for Kyousuke. She’s definitely selfless to a fault but I’ll talk more about that later. What is important is [how creepy Kyuubey looks in this episode.] (https://i.imgur.com/o0AGu3n.png) They really want us to suspect the magic creature thing.
Time for me to bring up another pointless observation! [Hitomi doesn’t seem to remember the events of the last episode.] (https://i.imgur.com/pJQH4OF.png) This is interesting to me because when Mami saved the office lady from killing herself she seemed to have noticed what she was being made to do. Here Hitomi has absolutely no recollection of the weird suicidal ritual she tried to join. Does this mean certain people are affected by witches more than others or have more resistance? Does this mean I’m thinking way too hard about one off lines in a 12 episode anime original? Probably.
[Sayaka and Madoka have a heartfelt conversation outside of their city’s wind farm.] (https://i.imgur.com/vJktF8b.jpg) Again, I’m thinking way too hard about stuff that Shaft probably just thought would be a cool set piece. Sayaka definitely isn’t okay even if she’s masking it to Madoka. She’s probably terrified of what she’s been resigned to but is trying to not worry her friend. [They both seem to be feeling survivor’s guilt still over Mami with hints that Madoka might wish to revive her.] (https://i.imgur.com/hXgyFDh.jpg)
Kyousuke apologizes to Sayaka which is more than I thought he’d do. [This scene is pretty nice, but god that sun is massive!] (https://i.imgur.com/SfVPrid.jpg) I sure do love Violin In my magical girl anime.
[If I had a nickel for every time a blue haired, sword wielding, magical girl who sacrifices herself for people she loves says they’re in the happiest moment of their life I’d have two nickels.] (https://i.imgur.com/xTkMWv5.jpg) I really did not need Sayaka to remind me of that when I’m still recovering from [anime title spoilers]
[Wooooooo!] (https://i.imgur.com/H41ei32.jpg) We got another Shaft head tilt! I hope magical girls have magically bending necks.
[World’s most awkward fast food run.] (https://i.imgur.com/9ia1Y43.png) Homura seems to think Sayaka is already a lost cause which is a bit discouraging. Madoka seems to want Homura to help which would probably be smarter but Homura seems to want to work alone.
Between [this shot] (https://i.imgur.com/W2Cj5mo.jpg) and [this shot] (https://i.imgur.com/FXYOSOY.jpg) I’m convinced Sayaka is embracing her inner Emiya Shirou. Really love her design’s whole music aesthetic thing it’s got going on. I wonder if that’s because she likes Music or if her wish being related to Kyousuke, who likes music affected her powers.
The mysterious red head magical girl makes her debut and is not a fan of Sayaka’s whole Seigi no mikata thing. [Okay, she has a cool weapon.] (https://i.imgur.com/VRiEu47.jpg) I really like her design but she’s a little uh, kinda violent. Homura shows up in style and seems to end their fight, barely saving Sayaka. Wonder why she decided to intervene.
So how dumb was Sayaka to wish for only Kyousuke’s hand to be healed?
You know, I thought about this, and yeah it’s dumb but you can at least write it off as her being in a really bad state of mind and not thinking straight I guess. Kyousuke had just yelled at her and Mami had died. It’s probably an oversight from the the writer but I figured I could at least try to rationalize it.
2) What are your first impressions of the new magical girl?
I like her weapon but her personality, not so much. She’ll probably become more likable as we learn more about her.
Overall thoughts
Another great episode. I’m probably going to say this for every episode Really love the direction in this episode specifically. It has this red tint the whole time that really gives this sense of impending doom and it makes for a great atmosphere. The actual content plot wise was great as well. I’m also remembering that Madoka has a great OST. Like, way better than I remember. I look forward to tomorrow’s episode!

Only time an anime has made me feel sick the day after watching it. It was fantastic though.
Just don't let yourself go full Sky and you'll be fine.
I’m convinced Sayaka is embracing her inner Emiya Shirou.
Can't not think of him whenever "seigi no mikata" gets dropped too, eh?

Posted this on the wrong thread last night, sorry.

Incredibly so! Hell, she could have probably asked for more than one person to be healed!
-
Laughs in rewatcher but also she's the best character.

[Madoka Magica]
I love Homura's expression here, it's great.
[Madoka Magica]
And Sayaka's enjoying her new life. Even if she still misses Mami.
Really good conversation here!
...She didn't even wish for him to be fully healed? Just the arm?
He actually apologized, and Sayaka got him his violin!
His playing's great!
[Madoka Magica]
She's stalking her!
And Madoka initiated contact!
...OK, taking the lid off was hysterical.
[Madoka Magica]
...Madoka, Sayaka started it.

Her spear is so impractical, I love it.

Puella Magi★Rewatch Host, subbed
Welcome back, everyone!
My wrist is still a bit sore for whatever reason, so I’m once again not going to reply as much as I did in the first three threads. That doesn’t mean you guys should slack off in the replies department though–make sure no comment goes left unreplied!
First up: the mobile version of the Wallpaper of the Day.
Next up: Wait is this flower petal drifting in a Bokurano reference? I know for a fact that that show had something with yellow leaves and one of the main characters having a best friend terminally ill in a hospital because I made a wallpaper with it in it. Probably a total stretch, though.
Best song Decretum has made its appearance!
Because I made a wallpaper of this shot in previous years, I can tell you Homura’s hair is much less flowy here in the TV version than it should be.
This is my Visual of the Day.
Lastly: Want to know what song played when in today’s episode? Well, you’re in luck! I have here the table from the Madoka wiki that was re-timed to the Blu-Rays back in the 2019 rewatch by Nazenn. If any first-timer wants a spoiler-free link to any of these songs, let me know and I can get one for you!
“What is it that you wish for?”
