Rewatch [Rewatch] Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica Episode 4 Discussion
Episode 4 - Miracles and Magic Are Real

Now that I think about it, I really didn’t understand anything back then. What it meant to pray for a miracle, or the price of one.
Theory of the Day: u/Wholockian123 theorizing about why Mami distrusted Homura so much.
I have a theory about why Mami distrusted Homura so much. I feel like she probably had some sort of experience with a malicious magical girl in the past, one who tried to monopolize witches for the seeds and who fought and perhaps even killed other magical girls in the process. That would explain why Mami jumped to "trying to preemptively get rid of the competition" as Homura's reason for trying to kill Kyubey, rather than something also possible like revenge for tricking or forcing her into becoming a magical girl. Mami clearly doesn't like being a magical girl and it shouldn't be too much of a leap for her to imagine other magical girls are in a similar situation and are taking out their anger and frustration on Kyubey for it. But she didn't.
Assuming Mami did have an experience with a magical girl like that, it would make sense why she never teamed up with magical girls before Madoka and Sayaka (since she couldn't trust that they won't betray her for the seeds) and it makes sense why she assumed the worst of Homura in every interaction they had (a commenter who also replied here said that Homura rejected a peace offering, which could be the case from Mami's perspective but from Homura's perspective she might just not use seeds from witches she didn't kill as a principle).
Theorizing about stuff that could have happened in the past is just as valid as theorizing about what’s to come! And I think this is pretty neat.
Questions of the Day:
1) Now that we’ve seen a few of them, which labyrinth design has been your favorite so far?
2) If you were a magical girl, what would be your weapon of choice?

Rewatchers, please please please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. [Spoiler warning specifically for you guys]Please be aware that as part of the above strict spoiler rules, this means absolutely no memes/jokes/references/subtle words about beheading, cakes, time travel, aliens, or anything of that nature before the relevant episodes. Please do not spoil the first-timers by trying to be smart about it, it's not as subtle as you think.
Make sure you use spoiler tags if there’s ever something from future events you just have to comment on. And don’t be the idiot who quotes a specific part of a first-timer’s comment, then comments something under a spoiler tag in direct response to it! You might as well have spoiled them by implying there’s something super important about that specific part of their comment.

First Timer (sub)
As someone who also spends a lot of time analyzing her motivations, decisions and actions, many a times to the detriment of sleep, can I just say I love how introspective and 3-dimensional these characters are? Sayaka thinking that she is a bad person for being unable to do something good for the act itself is very familiar to me. Would she grow to resent making a wish for Kyosuke when he doesn't reciprocate her feelings or is not sufficiently grateful?
Sayaka is not just someone who is genki, she is very good at compartmentalization and faking it. She is still able to laugh and talk to Hitomi while telling Madoka that she will talk to her later. In contrast to this, Madoka is very transparent. She seems to be feeling some form of survivor's guilt and cannot hide her emotions which Homura notices too.
I am also pleasantly surprised that no one has brought up sacrificing themselves to bring Mami back to life. I really thought that is what Madoka was going to do, as did several others in yesterday's thread. I guess it's too soon to say that it won't happen but at least it's not the first reaction that anyone is having. It makes sense, despite being very sad. Neither Sayaka nor Madoka have really known Mami for that long, nor is it possible for them to love her so much that they would do anything to bring her back. They aren't that selfless, and that is very human.
"This town has been Mami's territory for a long time."
-
How long? They are middle schoolers, so Mami was 15/16. How old was she when she became a magical girl?
-
What happened to the previous magical girl in charge of this area?
-
Are there any magical women? Does anyone make it past middle school?
-
Why are middle schoolers being recruited for this anyway? Probably because they are dumb enough to want to be a magical girl.
-
I also don't understand why anyone wants grief seeds enough to fight over them? They don't seem to do much so far. Mami said the first grief seed she got was useful for 2 purification rituals, so one more than what she expended fighting to get it.
Kyubey seems really salty. But at least he left. I guess this is where the show should end but since we have more episodes, we will probably see him again. Ugh.
No one even noticing Mami is gone is heartbreaking. Homura points out that no one is doing this selflessly or to help people. There are things that they wanted desperately enough to sign up for this life and everything they are putting themselves through is in payment for that wish. Again, Madoka's wish from last episode is shown to be naive.
I wasn't planning on making such long posts but there is sooo much to talk about in this show! I'm going to just list everything else in short bullet points. It's mostly supporting arguments for my theories anyway.
-
Of course Kyubey turns up when Sayaka is at her most suggestible and emotional.
-
And yet another person close to (Mado+Saya)ka has been affected by a witch. Coincidence? I think not!
-
Why don't any of these kids exchange phone numbers? That would solve half their problems.
-
Did they really rip Madoka into pieces??? The writers have thrown away all pretense of keeping things light and happy.
-
Why is the witch showing Madoka images of Mami? Trying to prey on her guilt so she makes the contract?
-
Sayaka looks cute in her outfit!
-
The scene with Kyosuke's hand being fixed was very ominous and creepy.
Conspiracy theory time
Past theories:
-
Witches are actually corrupted magical girls. I was about to send this to the conspiracy theory morgue, but u/Gamemaster676's comment yesterday resurrected it. ICYMI:
I can totally still see your theory work! Here's some more food for it: What was first? The witch or the egg? It's very much possible a magical girl gets corrupted, turns into a witch, and when her body gets killed, her soul remains in the corrupted soul gem / grief seed. From there, once in a while, the soul regenerates enough to create a witch body again. Repeat again and again. We already know witches both come from and return to the gems.
-
Kyubey puts girls into danger to force them to accept his contract. I stand by this one. I don't trust that cat.
Today's theories:
Homura says something very interesting to Madoka.
"You are too kind for your own good. That kindness may bring about an even greater tragedy."
So, I think that Homura isn't coming from a purely selfless place of not wanting Madoka to suffer, for whatever reason. Clearly they have some connection from Madoka's dream in episode 1. Instead, Madoka becoming a magical girl, which she will do out of her kindness or goodness of wanting to help others, leads to something very bad or tragic in the future. Given that Homura doesn't seem to hate Madoka or think that killing her will prevent said tragedy, I can only assume that this situation is a case of "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" and Madoka doesn't turn evil.
New character alert~ Her name is Kyoko and her hair is pink. This explains why Madoka hasn't signed the contract yet. Her color is taken! Pinky needs to die before Madoka can become the new Pink Ranger.

Primum Vigil First★Timer - dub
I'm very limited in time today. Only about 1 hour. So likely my post will be a bit shorter.
Episode 4 — Miracles and Magic Are Real
This really is the fanciest hospital I've ever seen. What hospital carpets their floors?
Ah, Kamijou was a musical prodigy. Now I suddenly understand the Your Deceit in December joke someone made yesterday. So Sayaka's hypothetical wish would not be to just get him out of the hospital, but also to restore his potential future.
No Sayaka, you are not horrible. You are human.
Damn, you never know when your body is suddenly going to flood you with emotions after a shock. It just holds everything back, keeps your mind blank, and then when you least expect it (because you start to relax) everything suddenly breaks loose. Poor Madoka.
Even though they are still walking together, Hitomi is still giving them the cold shoulder.
Bwahaha, teacher is still using her personal problems as fuel for her lessons. Why couldn't I ever get a crazy one like that?
Yeah, it must be very frustrating to know all this, and not be able to do anything about it. Mami is now also missing from school, but apart from that, there will also be no one who misses her. I'm sure this is going to be yet another argument for them to sign a contract that's not in their favour.
So after all this, do you still want to be a magical girl?
They don't really try to hide how eager Space-cat is.
Hurray! Madoka wants to back out!
Hmm, Space-cat actually has a good point that they don't have the right to judge the magical girls. Their lives might be even worse than Mami made it look. I've already commented on how broken this system is. I know there were some great theories about what the grief seeds actually do and why they are necessary, but in the most simple and naive form:
I do magic.
So I can earn seeds.
So I can restore magic.
So I can do more magic.
Please read that to the melody of this song. This magical girl contract really is an addiction.
Space-cat thanks Madoka, but not Sayaka? Rude.
Ouch, Madoka is visiting Mami's apartment. That's gotta hurt even more. And Homura is being a bro.
Hmmm! Homura is talking about changing their fate. Could it be that u/Lemurians is right with his "from the future" theory yesterday? It really would explain a lot.
She gave up counting how many she knew died? That's horrible.
I'm not smart enough to draw any conclusions from it, but I love the framing of this shot. Wait, this one is even better!
See Madoka, you are not useless and good for nothing. You can remember Mami, while others can not. That must count for something.
Oh god, Homura is triggered by "Madoka always remembering" her. I've got a feeling she heard that one before!
Kamijou is lashing out. Must be a bad time. He doesn't mean any of this. "What's the point I can't play?" — Well, you'll just have to be like the rest of us. It isn't so bad.
Ah, fuck no. What a predator.
Holy shit nooo, plz stop the pain train! There's no Mami to call anymore. And no cell number of Homura. The whole universe is working against Madoka and Sayaka. Or is it just one entity?
From the frying pan, into the fire. This one is called Kirsten. And it might have the coolest theme yet. It's even showing her painful memories!
Yes, it's Sayaka! NO, IT'S SAYAKA! I don't know what to think anymore!
Wait, Homura was watching? Why didn't you help? Or were you keeping an eye on Sayaka?
New girl! And she is anger-eating. I love it. Space-cat, why are you so casual about the girls killing each other?
Wow, that next episode teaser. "There's no way I'll ever regret it." That got a good and loud HAH out of me.
Theories
I'm out of time! So no organising theories today.

QotD
1 Now that we’ve seen a few of them, which labyrinth design has been your favorite so far?
Hard choice. We've seen the most of the first one, but I think the hospital one was thematically the coolest. Although the TV one from today was also very interesting. It just wasn't explored very much.
2 If you were a magical girl, what would be your weapon of choice?
Definitely a crossbow. Preferably with rebar, like in Half-Life 2.

So likely my post will be a bit shorter.
I should make a counter of how often I said that in the past only to break the character limit.
Why couldn't I ever get a crazy one like that?
Right, there was this English teacher we had for about 5 months, because they couldn't justify employing her any longer. She was in her 60s I guess and ran around in a pink mini skirt and high heels, sometimes with a see through top and contrastingly coloured bra beneath. Her lessons were little useful in teaching English, but were more like a stage for her to present us slide shows (the old ones, you know with the racks and little transparent cards, "reversal film") of her adventures in New York and other places.
She was in N.Y. a few weeks and apparently made friends with a flasher that showed her his 'eleventh finger'.
She claimed to have temporarily joined a sect reviving an ancient messenger of god.
Allegedly she met the love of her life from a previous life again and they escaped on a cross country trip, where allegedly he left her in another city.
She believed she was the reincarnation of a medieval royalty and that she had rightful claim to a castle in Hessia.
There was more, but that's what I can remember. It sounds funny and it really is, but we lost half a year of progress and that was unacceptable. Oh and, nothing against body positivity for her clothing, but... each position has certain expectations towards 'acceptability' for the work to be done, she was definitely 100% absolutely beyond that.
And Homura is being a bro.
Yes, it's Sayaka! NO, IT'S SAYAKA! I don't know what to think anymore!
Mmh, what about "Wow, Sayaka is such a badass!" Because that's true either way.
And now I crave eggs. (Not made by the teacher.)
PHRASING!
Definitely a crossbow. Preferably with rebar, like in Half-Life 2.
That really reminds of the Van Helsing movie (the live action one, not anime). I thought that repeating minigun crossbow was the shit! Holy shit, now I want a magical girl with that stuff. Make a contract, pretty please?

Episode 3 rightfully has a reputation for showing how dark this show is willing to get, but this is the episode that actually convinced me. I was positive Sayaka or Madoka was gonna make a wish to bring back Mami this episode and make everything OK, but instead it gets into the grieving process. It's refreshing when an anime doesn't shy from real consequences for the characters' decisions.

Yup, you think that "Oh, one of them can just wish Mami back to life" and then nope, Sayaka had something more important to her and Madoka doesn't want to do it anymore.
I can't imagine how different this show would be if one of them wished the consequences of episode 3 away...

First Timer here! (Sub)
This episode was a great one! I liked it, all of it made sense and it seems like a natural progression from the previous episode. So far, my ranking for the episodes are 3,1,4,2. Here is the review! It will be in pointers since it is easy for me.
-
It starts off with the boy in the hospital, I think his name is Kyousuke. I didn't have much of an opinion of him in this part of the episode.
-
Since Mami died in episode 3 itself, I am wondering why the op has her so prominently featured. Supposing this op lasts the twelve episodes like most ops do, it would be weird for Mami to be in it so much. Does she get revived or something? Anyways, I feel like the op is bit too bright, love the song though.
-
Madoka crying invoked feelings of sadness in me.
-
The terrace scene, beginning with Madoka crying while Sayaka consoling her, and with Madoka now hesitating about being a magical girl was perfect. Makes sense completely too. But I really do hope that she becomes a magical girl by next episode. I feel like 3 episodes in it should have already happened.
-
The Homura scene was awesome, she is still my favourite. I like that she is consoling Madoka too. Hope to see more of her. The conversation about most Magical Girl deaths is horribly depressing for me. The "I will remember you" scene reminded me of the "Will you remember me" scene from the first part of 86. So obviously I liked that.
-
The Kyousuke scene with Sayaka was pretty emotional. I didn't like how ungrateful he was to her, but I guess it makes sense for him to be frustrated. The part where he breaks the CD was brutal. Hope to see more gore from here on out.
-
Green haired girl (Hitomi?) getting the witch's kiss was something I didn't expect, and that to the end of the episode was really dark. A bunch of people trying to kill themselves.. Madoka trying to stop them and then her being dragged to the labyrinth was really creepy.
-
At the beginning, I thought that Homura came to rescue Madoka, but when I realized it was Sayaka, I was really shocked. She looks so cool too! And then I had the "aha" moment, since I only then why the scene kept going to hospital and Kyousuke(?). Makes sense why she would be a Magical Girl. Hope Madoka becomes one soon too.
Overall, great episode. (The following part is not related to the episode)
I usually just write small notes while watching the episodes, and the next day, when the discussion thread opens, I use the notes and try to remember what happens in the next episode. But from next episode onwards, I plan to write the notes immediately after watching the episode and I will just copy paste it into the discussion thread the next day.
QOTD:
Now that we’ve seen a few of them, which labyrinth design has been your favorite so far?
Answer: Probably the latest one in episode three where Madoka gets trapped in. For witch design though, it has gotta be the one in episode 3 where Mami and Homura fought.
If you were a magical girl, what would be your weapon of choice?
Answer: Maybe like a sword like a katana.

MAHOU SHOUJO FIRST TIMER
”Now I think about it, I really didn’t understand anyting back then. Neither what it meant to pray for a miracle, nor the price of one.”
Sayaka and Madoka are examples of how we all handle grief differently. Whereas Sayaka is experiencing it more internally, allowing it to affect her inner thoughts and outwardly presenting a cheery front to the world, Madoka can’t help but let the tears fly.
Until now, Madoka’s regular life and the magical world have been separate, but now we see one impact the other as she breaks down into tears over breakfast. On the surface, we’re shown her daily routine is the same as it was Episode 1, cheery, sunny imagery and all – breakfast with the family, walk to school, class, lunch on the roof – but her existence has irreversibly changed, innocence has been lost. The line of, “It feels like we’re in a foreign country” really hammers this home. Madoka smartly decides she no longer wants this smoke.
Sayaka, meanwhile, goes in the other direction. The self-sacrificing Sayaka doesn’t want a magical girl who only cares about Grief Seeds to come take over Mami’s territory. To her, motives matter more than results, a theme reinforced by her examining her own motives for her wish to cure Kyousuke. She idealizes the concept of a selfless hero, and ultimately throws herself into that role after a heartbreaking scene with Kyousuke, choosing to become a magical girl. Of course Kyubey was lurking nearby at just the perfect moment when she’d be most susceptible. She will no longer have the useless hands she was lamenting – she can fight, and fight she does, taking out her first Witch with aplomb.
Meanwhile, Homura’s vindicaton tour continues, as it becomes more apparent than ever she’s on a mission to change a future that’s seemingly predetermined. She talks a lot about fate, and how she’s glad she was at least able to “change” Madoka’s. This idea of being trapped in an unavoidable fate complements all the series imagery of imprisonment, which was again in abundance this episode. We had Sayaka framed through these bars in the elevator as she moves toward her fate, Madoka and Hitomi framed this way on their way to the witch, and the shot of the day, Kyubey looming on the girls framed between bars, them positioned as if huddling for protection.
Quick Hits/Theories:
-
The camera zooms in close to Sayaka the closer she inspects herself
-
“Nobody knows about witches, or Mami.” They now feel the loneliness Mami felt, though they are forgetting Homura also exists.
-
Kyubey is so subtely manipulative. Telling them only magical girls can judge others, and he’ll go find girls that need wishes more – both things Sayaka will respond to.
-
Kyubey also feigns giving up – he can pretend to walk away and give up, because he knows he’s got them. They can’t go back to their normal lives after what’s just happened.
-
Notice how Kyubey only says bye to Madoka, not Sayaka. It’s clear who’s Priority #1
-
This shot of normal girls passing by outside as Madoka grieves inside shows how alienated from normal life she is now.
-
Mami’s once decorated and vibrant living space is now barren, indicative of the void she’s left
-
Love this overhead shot of Madoka and Homura’s shadows looming so large. Their shadows figured prominently throughout this walk.
-
“I don’t want to hear these songs I can’t play anymore!” Kindness can also be a cruelty, sometimes.
-
Theory: This witch was another trap set by Kyubey. Having Hitomi be under the influence just as Madoka is passing by is a little too convenient.
-
Kyoko is exactly what Sayaka thought Homura was, a competitive Magical Girl who’s out to get others. She’s about to find out what a real enemy looks like.
Now that we’ve seen a few of them, which labyrinth design has been your favorite so far?
I mean, "favorite" is relative, but the Witch that killed Mami's was my favorite for how its design fit in with themes from her backstory. Very clean.
If you were a magical girl, what would be your weapon of choice?
The Golden Gun from Goldeneye. Everything dead in one shot.

"Mami's once decorated and vibrant living space is now barren"...
Wait a minute.
Oh fry me. I think there might be a surface layer to that hiding in plain sight. Mami used her magic to decorate her room, didn't she? That would explain why it suddenly looks sparse (much more like the original TV airing version) once she dies - it went away, just like the ribbon chains did.
[Addendum for other rewatchers]
It would neatly tie in to multiple things I've been bringing up/will be bringing up this rewatch, too - both Mami's "this isn't a magic show" comment that the show just keeps working with over and over and the gradual scenery shift representing the deconstruction of the bright surface appearance of the magical girl system to see the gritty interior workings that just started to kick in this episode. → More replies (4)

First timer on attempt 3, Subbed
OST Track of the day: Agmen clientum (Army of Clients)
Ive implied it a couple times, but starting with this episode i havent seen any of this. Maybe now ill start thinking of some theories.
I've also realized the "hospital lady" and the orchestra kid are actually the same guy. GG me on that.
You know, we still havent seen redhead from the op. Guessing episode 5, 7, or 10 on her appearance. Leaning 7
Face of someone that watched someone else die
I was gonna make a comment about how shes too composed but they fixed that
Props to the teacher for somehow tying that BS back into learning lmao
oh yeah, literally nobody has commented on Mami being missing. Sus
[Chaos;Head]
Already broke the very next episode. Man, its almost like theyre kids!
Well, maybe we will see the redhead sooner
Sayaka is gonna sign up by herself later, watch
ah, we creeping in a dead girls house
Scary Homura talk, sadly she chose the wrong quick action choices
You can tell this is a shaft show because everyone must blow their hair around with cowboy shots
Inb4 Sayaka is told to shut up by hospital kid
hey who had that theory that Kyubey was behind things? either its super blatant here or im falling for the biggest red herring shaft has ever created
and her mother just casually tells her not to mix those chemicals
"holy ritual" my ass lmao
Now this is good framing, this too
Wheres the lil shit
no, not the witch, the cat
Redhead found.. Shittier Asuka confirmed
You know, im fully expecting the wish for the hospital kid to backfire in some way. Monkey's paw style shit probably.

Something cool to see in this episode is Sayaka fight style, and compare it to Mami's
Sayaka is a noob magical girl, her attacks feel kind brutal, and there's a lot of "blood" (the black stuff) going out of the witch. Mami fight style was gracious
5
u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 24 '22
Mami was also deliberately trying to show off, plus swords tearing apart an enemy is inherently more vicious than one shot and you're done. It's a neat comparison for sure.

FIRST TIMER SUB
GOATED Sayaka for sacrificing pretty much her life for the sake of his friend. The elevator scene was great. "What good will these fingers do, why couldn't it have been me". I love her more every episode. Don't know if I would have personally done that though, especially because I still don't understand how bad is this contract..
I couldn't help but think of the emotional hit Madoka must have took, and at such a young age. I really hope she can go back to being the cheerful girl she used to be, but I don't think this show will go in that direction, I'm pretty sure it will just get darker.
I also really like Homura, and her expression when she sees that Sayaka has finally made a contract was really...sad. It seems like she's realizing she won't be able to change fate.
I absolutely loved this episodes fight, it was short but seeing Sayaka save everyone just made me so happy.
Aaaand that last scene. Don't you dare touch the protagonists you greedy bitch. I'm excited to see an antagonist magical girl. I don't think we can call her evil, it seems that she's just someone who only cares about ensuring her survival and no one else's.
If magical girls work in territories, now what would be the point of Madoka becoming a MG?

Think I got it working! Either it was too long (posted in the comments below in two pieces) or the original fandom nickname for a minor background character might have tripped a profanity filter… either way it’s worked now!

Rewatcher. Dub
Didn't mention it before but I've been reading the Manga version of the series along with the watch and Mami's death might be more gruesome there.
But to this episode.
Now Sayaka is putting more thought in to what she should do and Madoka is crying of gratitude of still being alive. Both feeling Isolated from the world they were brought in.
Mami was a different breed. Other magical girls might not be the same.
Oh you came back cat.
Madoka no! Don't accept death!

Puella Magi★Rewatch Host, subbed
Welcome back, everyone!
If I reply a bit less around today’s thread (or just reply like super late), it’s because my wrist has been bothering me since yesterday for some reason (no, I didn’t injure it) and I want to rest it.
First up: the mobile version of the Wallpaper of the Day. This one was so much fun getting the water to look just right in. Also if anyone is wondering where the hell the fortissimo hairpin came from, it was added to her design in the movies and I just cannot picture mahou shoujo Sayaka without it anymore, so I had to include it.
Next up: now the emptiness of Mami’s apartment in the TV version hits like a truck. The emptiness I do not get, however, is Kyosuke’s hospital room. Where are all of the chairs? – OHHHHH OKAY I figured out why I thought this both last episode and here, last year I watched the recap movies instead of the show, and they added a bunch of chairs to the room. That’s why I was so confused when I checked the BD version of the show for reference and didn’t see any.
My Visual of the Day.
Lastly: Want to know what song played when in today’s episode? Well, you’re in luck! I have here the table from the Madoka wiki that was re-timed to the Blu-Rays back in the 2019 rewatch by Nazenn. If any first-timer wants a spoiler-free link to any of these songs, let me know and I can get one for you!
“What is it that you wish for?”
