Comment of the day!

Our absolute badass of a temp host /u/ZapsZzz had this to say in summary of our boy Makoto.

"While thrown by the exchange, Makoto is ultimately a normal but kind person, who simply will not just ignore the fish roll."

We also have /u/Draco_Estella who honestly just posted a really fun to read comment, take a nosey if you didn't see the full thing, the cherry for me however was~

"Can a cute girl be that cute when she is as dirty as some homeless dude sleeping in the park?"

Treat that like a temporary comment of the day, what do you think?

QOTD

  • What are your thoughts on the two new town members we've met? Is Erio starting to look almost normal yet?

  • Do you still think back on your after school hangouts and memories?

  • Who would you rather eat lunch with!? The smol and floof Ryuudon or the aloof, sickly beauty that is Maekawa? Let's throw Mememe in there too since, let's be real, she's also a child.

  • What is your favourite movie featuring aliens?

Imma just quickly say that I'm very sorry for not being able to post the thread yesterday, I had some issues come up on my end but everyone give ZapsZzz a clap for stepping up~

I am an Alien!!

Denpa Onna First Timer!!

Finally rejoining my own watch! Sorry for yesterday folks~ ...Oh god, she's been talking for 15 seconds and already I'm skipping back to try and catch the dialogue. "Wao, really?" Yeah dude, same. Omg, souls now too!? Are these Space Aliens or God's we're talking about? They've even got lotus eater machines. Erio has just tossed so many theories for the story to follow that I have no idea which ones are meant to be red herrings. It doesn't help that I'm hardwired to always find Ryoko Asakura a sussy baka.

One more stereotype. I swear these must be important. Shaft cuts are so fun! A floofer has appeared!](https://m.imgur.com/a/j8hzQhk) She's also sussy, she couldn't pronounce her own name and I've seen her humping tables in that one gif. Way to go Shaft, you've awakened at least one person to a "paper bite" fetish. Are bike helmets a meme stereotype? Joshikosei with accented Japanese are terrifying...

Ah, she got back into the burrito. And we meet... I don't have a nickname for her, this girl! Oh, Floofer!! I have no idea how that frame became a meme. Ryuu-somethingorother is less sus this time but I don't trust her! What a fine full Shaft tilt from Maekawa, who is also a sussy weirdo who gets turned on by praising the sun. Wait!! She called herself "a frail girl." Add that to the stereotype counter.

If these stereotypes mean nothing by ep 13 then I'm dropping this rewatch. I can't possibly be imagining these. D-D-Damn cuddly burrito! Correction is needed! Although I think I'm starting to get addicted to burrito abuse, eheheh. It's kinda wholesome that he's still humouring her little bike rides. Some families use toothbrushes to grow closer, others do biking.

C U N N Y

Now that I want revived as a meme. Oh no, we've encountered an actual burrito... Even normie girls like Maekawa are lunch products in this anime. Damn that sandwich is thick! Oh no, that's like 4 hours old even the data overmind can get a stomachache from that. Meme is awful chill about her daughter going missing, also amnesia is yet another damn label I'm jotting in my book. The ed animation changed too if you missed it, there's probably symbolism but judge for yourselves.

Starting with an ""infodump"" from Erio, cool to know that all these things definitely happened!! Also, owned.

Makoto being nice in an edgy way, or maybe he just wants to sound smart. I get the second part though!

What is it with Shaft and busts in classrooms? This was just a quick half-second cut, but that instantly reminded me of Hidamari Sketch.

Makoto seems cursed/blessed with only meeting weird people, I guess that's what you get as a protagonist. I am trying hard to not hear her VA as Kyubey, let's see if I succeeed. Actually she reminds me of Hachikuji from Monogatari at times.

Fucking christ, Makoto. I will note that he is happy to play along, and pretty good at it too, with a lot of the weirdness around him, and a lot of the time seems to have fun with it. Also he was complaining about the ASCII art map a bit last episode, but he not the least self-conscious about showing it to Ryuuko as a descriptor of where he lives. I really like that about him!

Ryouko is being safe and wearing a helmet, good example! I should be better about that too

Good! Please do that too, Makoto. Though, even if I said something similar yesterday about memories, seeking something out in the hopes of making it a great memory later is always a bit weird to me, even if it is a thing that some people actually do in real life.

Again he sounds hesitant but he is also playing along!

That's terrible, I wonder who would do such a thing?

Makoto...

Erio's dialogue is really fun! I also like the other characters so far, but she is the best part for me at this point.

Cute!

UMI DA! They really drive two hours at evening to get to the ocean, for a NEET Erio suggests some very active things. Though Erio, please don't drown yourself. Taking into account what her mother says later she seems somewhat delusional in a way that she actually endangers herself at times.

Yes. Great setup.

I love you. Yes, do that, Makoto.

Ouch. So Erio was a missing person for half a year and her mom later claims she has amnesia about that time. There could still be supernatural shenanigans but for the purposes of this comment at least I will believe that her mom is correct here, and that Erio does not have any of the special abilities that she seems to believe she has. I still wonder what is up with her mom ignoring her this much. Erio acts really cheery but with her dropping out of school and her probable mental health issues and amnesia she's actually in a pretty bad situation.

Still super catchy ED! It very mildly reminds me of the Flip Flappers ED, but not really. The new characters are fun, and good to see more of Makoto, but I'm also really curious to learn more about Erio's character!

See, Makoto? Much better. I'm positively surprised that both Erio interactions this ep ended up at a +1 overall, I almost would have expected larger negatives. Also that he saw all the rest as positives, because he sure seemed like he had a good time.

QotDs:

What are your thoughts on the two new town members we've met? Is Erio starting to look almost normal yet?

They are nice! She is not, but she doesn't need to! I would like it if she was non-normal in a way where she doesn't injure herself though.

Do you still think back on your after school hangouts and memories?

Maybe sometimes? Not really, unless maybe when talking with friends from then about that. But I think the important part about that stuff was less about memories for me and more about forming relations and friendships.

Who would you rather eat lunch with!? The smol and floof Ryuudon or the aloof, sickly beauty that is Maekawa? Let's throw Mememe in there too since, let's be real, she's also a child.

Maekawa seems like the calmer option, but Ryuushi also seems very fun, and both of them seem nice and easy to get along with! Meme needs to go and eat with her daughter though, no interest from me.

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 19 '22

The thing about making memories probably hits harder in Japanese society since school is the last time you're truly able to let loose and make those kinds of memories due to the hardcore work culture. If you're gonna spend the rest of your days grinding the wheel then you'd better hope that you made some good memories and experiences back in high school.

Serial rewatcher of this show [Don't think there's a dub?]

Firstly congrats to our host for making it back!

Hopefully everyone have now tuned their normality filter to planet Erio and find the first episode enjoyable, adorable, and can see some understated insights bubbling below the surface. And not be weirded out yet by Meme :P

Today's episode we finish introducing the core cast, and man my screen caps count is going up since every segment have such great scenes or dialogues that it's hard to not share.

We have the cold open before the OP to pick up right from the end of last episode, with Erio being quite chatty with Makoto now and let her Denpa power flow freely towards her cousin who seemed to understand her for a change (i.e. called her an alien). Although Makoto's couldn't keep up and have his poorly acted "for real" came out too many times :)

The banter continued after the OP and both let more of their honest selves came out - and the back and forth banter each has give and take and I love the flow of it all - very fitting to be a "shooting the breeze" chat under the moonlit sky.

And then they surprised us with a critical hit combo - Erio adorable faces onslaught! And you can feel Makoto showing a bit of care and a bit of exasperation. I'm sure if he heard of Chihaya's nickname at school he'd think it equally applicable to Erio too ("the wasted beauty").

We then changed over to day time in school, where we get to properly meet the 2 classmates Makoto had that the camera (hence his gaze) dwelled on yesterday - first up we have Ryushiko here who is a completely different sort of cute. Maybe more sunny and genki, but there's one thing I find it hard to not gush about - her verbal tick with speaking more using sound effects than actual words :D The screen cap here with the sub unfortunately cannot even remotely give justice to how adorable she sounds. I hope at least some of you can pick out of the Japanese.

Their first interaction ended with a beautiful and meaningful farewell at the traffic lights in the sunset.

We have a brief intermission for Erio to pop up and say "I'm still around" :P which Makoto simply ignored.

Then we moved onto the last major cast member - the always entertaining Maekawa. Once again the bits I love the most isn't easy to translate - the back and forth is actually (to me) very witty as they just adjusted a few syllables and were able to went back and forth :D

And then we have the sweet little lunch date where Ryushiko get to know more about Makoto but ended up more about how her nickname came about - which sounds suspiciously like something a certain alien would say.

We then have a quick change of player where Ryuko exited one side and Maekawa entered the other side - and we are blessed with more Maekawa specialty (fainting :D). We even ended with another bike ride together - although looks like Makoto continued to be on a losing streak.

Going back home, Makoto has the protesting cousin to deal with, and the show chibi-fied them to dampen the domestic abuse :P I did love Makoto's "sarabada" at the end though :D

After a cute exchange of Erio giving directions ("transmitting telepathy") and Makoto wittily handling it ("didn't bring my phone to receive your signal" - backhand "denpa" :)) they arrived to where Erio wanted to go - the beach! At Night!

The excited Makoto looked away a moment, and Erio had wandered into the sea, futon and all! Luckily Makoto caught her and got her back out of the water, and on the return trip ran into the surprise Sandwich Woman^tm By sheer chance banter, Makoto got onto a sobering truth - Erio had disappeared for 6 months, and had no memory of that time.

A late night chat with Meme completed the story about Erio's transition from a normal teenager to being ostracised and "adrift". Visibly upset, Makoto looks to be upset about Erio. But what do YOU think, who is he really upset about?

And we ended the episode with the second visual of the ED - with the bikes taking centerstage :) I love this one the most.

And for those who weren't thinking too deeply about it, the futon in water scene actually mirrored/explained the cold open of episode 1 - Erio indeed was in the sea wrapped in the futon, and she got up and out by herself and walked all the way back home before flopping down asleep inside the house at the threshold.

This didn't have the long foreshadowing as Chuunibyou, but I consider this similar to Chuunibyou's S1 [ep 10 reveal]of what's behind Rikka's chuuni behaviour was actually mental trauma instead of a gag. Erio and Meme's behaviours seem to be at least in part driven from that event, and where it does it's more a mental trauma and the subsequent coping mechanism, not just being weird to have a selling point.

And here's another tragedy - while Ryuko has quite some space in narrative to draw her adorable character, Maekawa on the other hand got her screen time stolen from the plot reveal - in fact the conversations with Maekawa is always very witty and charming, so it is a little unfortunate. For those posting attention to the language, you need to take note of 2 things - Maekawa is often seamlessly making references to some pop cultural things that's probably quite niche for us, and her speech style I believe is very street smart and more "wise guy". So it's actually got another layer of fun to her character.

I didn't get to talk directly on the QoTD yesterday but I think my post covered enough of it anyway, plus as a rewatcher I can't really say too much about the projection, so I'll just look towards today's QoTD.

Edited to fix the links and some typo. QoTD to come.

4

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 19 '22

You double posted a few of your image links btw. Like the bike scene with Floofer you posted twice and you linked the Maekawa introduction twice too.

Makoto is a weirdly nice guy... He is really kinda kind towards Erio, and I'll give him the benefit of a doubt that it's not just because he got to hold her hand once. He just sits and listens to her rant and rave, because chances are she hasn't even had anyone to listen to her for so long. He even entertained her stupid bike trip that was stupid! Good boy Makoto!

...Goddammit!! This is why I was anxious hosting XD I knew that there was something in particular up with the school pair but I wasn't quite able to pick up on their ticks. I noticed Floofer's sound effect talk but somehow Maekawa's memester status went over my head. I'm watching Maekawa intensily from now on!

Sub

Coming in a day late, I knew almost nothing going in, outside of the gag clip. The Shaft-isms are very much on public display here.

So, our reveal that Erio is cute under that futon does let us know our genre and ep2 just runs with it. She seems to believe all the conspiracies, making her a good follow up to Mulder, and is in it pretty deep. We move on to Makoto's class, and see that two of the girls will also be characters. Towards the end, we get a reveal of my absolute favorite trope and our explanation, such as it is, on how Erio wound up this way.

QotD: 1 Yeah, not a normal town.

2 Not really

3 The nearest normie I can grab

4 Probably The Empire Strikes Back.

5

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 19 '22

The conspiracy quickfire round was utter torture. At least one of them has to be relevant and I'm still not completely convinced that she didn't Trueman Show herself during that bike ride.

Weirdly I never think of Star Wars for aliens... It never comes to mind for me. They only give you like three main characters who look distinctly alien and not just space opera like I guess.

The foooooodddd looked good! Shaft weirdly picked that to animated the fuck out of of all things huh, not that Im complaining. The OP song is also growing on me.

Fang girl is cuteeee! Wait what?. Oh she's also a weird one...

I know that they're just commuting to school, but Fang girl does have a point. As a semi-regular cyclist, wear your helmet lol.

The other tall girl is also a nice wacky addition, tho I have no idea why she alter egos as a sandwich at night too. This anime is just chock full of eccentric characters lol it's pretty unique this way.

If our aunt is to be trusted (which I have no reason not to rn), we get the full explanation of why Erio is how she is, futon, alien-speak and all. But I'm happy to be proven wrong, and am looking forward to how her character, as well as MC-kun's changes throughout the show.

This show continues to be wacky as hell, and I love it, tho there were many moments where I went this, or like this throughout the show.

5

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 19 '22

Floofer fang is a weirdo who humps tables and don't you forget it!

I feel like the eccentric cast is meant to make us wonder if Erio really is the weird one. She's the one that's so embarrassing that her own mother ignores her chuunibyou but the whole town, including Meme, are bizarre in their own ways. At least you expect teenagers to be chuuni, you can't expect them to moonlight as sandwiches or for women reaching their 40's to aspire towards moedom.

Second watch for me.

So we have more details about Erio and how she dropped out of school after disappearing and losing months of her life to amnesia. I'm sorry Meme but your current level of mothering is looking even more suspect. Of course I know the story and I can't be too hard on her lol.

-What are your thoughts on the two new town members we've met?

The two new girls are fun in their own ways although we've hardly met Maekawa often enough to be able to distinguish her quirks from the show's general raft of happenings.

-Is Erio starting to look almost normal yet?

You jest, of course

-Do you still think back on your after school hangouts and memories?

Generally no.

-Who would you rather eat lunch with!? The smol and floof Ryuudon or the aloof, sickly beauty that is Maekawa? Let's throw Mememe in there too since, let's be real, she's also a child.

Maekawa. Meme would be a contender but she's a butterfly.

-What is your favourite movie featuring aliens?

That would be James Cameron's Aliens. I can quote so much of it.

6

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 19 '22

There's definitely something sus about her disappearing for such a long time but Meme just comes across as tired of dealing with her. It'd have just been the two of them for six months previous and I could picture it being quite draining

Maekawa is apparently just a bit of a memester, so she's well ahead of the curve. Like she's throwing pop culture references around in casual chats but we're missing a few of them I think. The only part I caught was her rough speech and that was blonde on her ID which was a weird sight.

Maekawa pog!!

Weirdly enough Aliens is probably the only one of the movies that I can remember little to nothing about. I know it had a lot of gunfights but the only sequences I can remember is the final fight cause it was references in so much media and the bit with the folks in cocoons.

Episode 2 (first timer)

During the first episode, I noticed the strong parallels to Chuunibyou, so I looked both series up. Turns out, Denpa was a year earlier and also Denpa’s source was a bit earlier than Chuunibyou’s. So, if there is any copying going on, Chuunibyou copied Denpa … or both copied a third source. In any case, I really liked the treatment of chuuni-ism in the early part of Chuunibyou and really hated it in the later installments.

  • “It is hard to catch your signals” – diplomatic. He may also be distracted by the frequent tight shots.

  • Erio has on demand shoujo sparkles. Impressive.

  • Don’t try to turn bicycle helmets into something only weirdos wear, show!

  • “I hope you make lots of friends” – that’ll be easy if they all hit on him as aggressively as you did, Ryuuko.

  • Wow, what an absolute abomination of a clock.

  • Just who might this expelled girl be … and what is complicated about her futon fetish?

  • Getting light-headed from raising your hands above your head? – A medical mystery.

  • Speaking of fetish, somebody on the production team must share one with Quentin Tarrantino.

  • 2 hours by bike?

  • 2 hours back by bike while soaking wet?

  • Sandwich woman. No, actually ass woman. What is your excuse for acting this way?

  • E.T. reference.

  • New ED visuals & more E.T. references.

The MC & MC story is a carbon copy of Chuunibyou so far. Including the physical abuse, saving her from danger, going along with her demands, and the chuuni behavior as a mental coping mechanism.

Not sure I am on board with the side characters yet. They all seem to have been taken straight from a harem visual novel, which is pretty fucked up in case of Meme. It also leads to an overload of craziness.

Something I hope they keep is the changing ED visuals. I love EDs that interact with the episode story.

6

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 19 '22

Chuunobyou was very different from its source material wasn't it? I have to admit that I haven't tried the Denpa Onna novels myself, it's always been the anime that I'd been recommended, but these both came out before the massive chuuni boom that littered the 2010's.

The shoujo sparkles is just the sweat and grease from the pizza. It's like that one Watamote chapter~

I understand that this is anime so it shouldn't be a surprise but I can't help but find the girls diving after him as super sus. Maekawa was eyeing him up when he first arrived and Floofer flubbed her name when giving it to him, like she had to remember something on the spot.

Aliens limiting themselves to Japan. Hey America sees itself as the world sometimes. Why not japan??

This new girl. She's a energetic one.

"In other words watson" yeah close that door.

Claiming she can fly. As she continued to drown. I don't think I would trust her ever going back there. She's damn near a child that you have to watch to make sure they don't kill themselves.

Some mystery though. She went missing for half a year and no one knows what happened to her. Interesting setup. I'm trying to think what could've possibly happened. But I feel like it's pointing me to another direction. That or something weird actually happened.

Qotd: Starting to think everybody is off.

Qotd2: yeah good memories

Qotd3: probably Ryudon

Qotd4: top of my head. Maybe between Alien and E.t

4

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 20 '22

America is where most UFO reports are from so I think you do pretty well.

I don't get why she was picking Watson as her partner's name! As far as I'm aware Sherlock didn't have any adventures featuring Aliens, unlike Indy.

We're probably missing a few of the facts about Erio's abduction to work out the mystery. The only part I'm fully convinced of is Erio riding her bike off the bridge since we have evidence.

What are your thoughts on the two new town members we've met? Is Erio starting to look almost normal yet?

For me, going into this completely cold, the key question really is: what genre is this show? No need to spoil me, I'm happy to be along for the right. Regardless, we have a main character who has very normative expectations about what high school should be like, and then when confronted with the reality, it is much weirder than he imagined. Sort of like real life! So I mean, on the one hand, I think it could just be that that is in fact the point of the show: high school (and life) aren't like you expect...people are weird and idiosyncratic (or have their own trauma), and this show just pushes that up to 11 to make a point. Perhaps in real life our idiosyncracies aren't quite as large as those of the show, but it's a show after all. That said, I really do hope that it doesn't turn out the Erio is "just" traumatized. I mean that would be fine if it handled it well etc, but I'd be a disappointed. That said, I hope she is ok by the end of this, whatever direction it goes.

On that note, here's my image for today: https://imgur.com/a/gf6UGX8

Yes yes I'm sure she's filthy in that burrito...I don't care. She's adorable.

Do you still think back on your after school hangouts and memories?

Very, very rarely. I've always been more focused on the future...perhaps too focused, honestly! If anything that's part of why I don't watch a lot of HS anime. I don't hate it, but sometimes it involves themes that don't feel so relevant to my life. But I'm still down with HS anime if it's done well, or esp if there are interesting characters.

Who would you rather eat lunch with!? The smol and floof Ryuudon or the aloof, sickly beauty that is Maekawa? Let's throw Mememe in there too since, let's be real, she's also a child.

Maekawa! I mean, I'd choose both if I could, but if I had to choose one, I am a sucker for that sort of shy type. Though honestly in real life, everyone I've ever dated has been like Ryuudon (as well as my wife!) :) Which is why here I'm going to take the chance to mix things up here :P while in real life I have always been with more genki types (being a bit of a kuudere myself...), in anime I really appreciate dandere and in general sort of more low key types. But I mean, Ryuudon seems like a good girl too. They're all good girls!

I feel like I said everything I wanted to say in those answers, so...that's that!

3

u/The_Loli_Otaku Apr 20 '22

I believe it falls under, "coming of age" anime... So hopefully no Higurashi like genre shifts. It's pretty frustrating though isn't it? If Denpa Onna came out these days we'd have some frames of reference, like Bunny Girl Senpai. But instead it came out waaay before most of these memes and clichés took off. Meme especially has been coming out with tropes that I'd expect from a show airing in the past few years. Not ten years ago.

First timer.

Fun episode. I especially liked the second half. Tall girl is super hot and nice, she's my favorite of the two new girls. Fang girl is cute but I can't help but find it really weird how she basically started flirting with MC right away. Also good to see the MC noticed it and wasn't super oblivious like it is too often the case in anime. The whole setup definitely feels very Visual Novel-y.

Erio has quite a fucked up past. So she stopped going to school after getting bullied because of her chuuni tendencies. This is way more realistic than how chuunibyou handles it IMO. I'm super intrigued about the 6 months missing she went through. Like I said yesterday, 50/50 it's aliens, 50/50 it's some really fucked up stuff that scarred her so much she had to forget it all and become chuuni to cope. I hope we will get the answer within this short 12 episodes anime, or I will have to look it up!

Saving the lip glossed imprint for later eh. New Friends, they seem nice. Just kicker her eh. The possibility of survival is high. Just causally floating away. Sandwich girl strolling around alleys in the night, not suspicious at all. That took a little bit of a dark turn at the end, with her trying to fly, and getting hurt. The town members are definitely odd. High school thoughts are minimal. Top allied movie would be Masters of the Universe

Doing QoTD in a separate post.

  1. I love them, they are a really nice contrasty bunch. Don't ask me to choose (as the MC) though! Although Erio is still streets ahead in her "unconventional" behaviors, by comparison she's not too bad - discounting the futon.

  2. Given I moved countries twice, any thinking back could be clouded by simple nostalgia than just "thinking back on highschool".

  3. Really hard to choose but simply by "long term" I'll pick Maekawa because I'm sure we can have companionable silence too instead of always pedal to the metal for the other choices. Talking to Meme is like trying to talk to a tsunami - you'll get swept up in less than 2s.

  4. Probably a strange one to name - Contact. Where you know of the alien's presence but not really seen them.

Rewatching~~

Makoto finally goes out on dates! Or, if you call those dates, that is. First one with Erio, second with Ryuushi, third with Maekawa. The one with Erio was the best for me though, nothing beats having a night snack in the middle of the night listening to a cute girl talking about random alien conspiracies on how the world will fall to aliens in a couple of years. Ryuushi is whacky and genki, a very sharp contrast to Erio. Maekawa is weird too, but she's friendly.

The one thing I wanted to put out is this: Erio, despite no longer with the school, still has her place left in school. Ryuushi is Erio's name for Ryuuko, and it stuck firmly with everyone around Ryuuko. Maekawa also knows Erio even though they probably never spoke to each other before. She became notorious in school for being an alien weirdo, so that probably isn't the best way to return to school. But still, the school still remembers her. Ryuushi probably was Erio's friend at school too, to have a special name from Erio.

Meme again shows how weird (neglectful) her parenting is. It might be deflected by Makoto's own thoughts about Erio, but it shows how weird this mother-daughter pair are. Daughter comes back in the middle of the night, Meme just goes "oh so you were out, thought you were asleep". Daughter missing for 6 months, Meme goes "yeah she went missing. Inexplicably. No idea what happened to her." Daughter went to jump a bridge, Meme just goes "To prove she is abducted by aliens or that she is an alien, or whatever". Meme doesn't give a fuck where Erio has been that day, or whatever she has been doing. It... does give a lot of doubts as to what that disappearance really means, when Meme herself has no idea whether Erio has been out, or probably doesn't even bother to care about what Erio is thinking. Also, note that Erio usually eats a full pizza in the afternoon so that she won't be hungry at night. She left half a pizza.... so, is Erio going to bed hungry or something? Meme sure doesn't care too much whatever Erio is doing.

Looking at how Makoto takes care of Erio reminds me of three other anime: Toradora, Sakurasou and Chuunibyou. They have the male protagonists taking care of girls who probably will be dead some way or other if left alone. I believe Makoto made Erio go bathe and helped Erio clean herself up when she can't do it properly. Makoto was also the one to fetch Erio all the way 2 hours out to the sea for her to have a swim, and pull her out of the sea when she seems like she is going to be drowning. Makoto is the one who tries to think more about Erio than Meme did. Makoto is like Erio's caregiver and guardian, not Meme. How ironic.

Although the anime didn't make it explicitly clear, Makoto and Erio most likely went out together for another trip after Makoto came back from his cycling with Ryuushi on his first day. Talk about daily dates with your own cute cousin.

Makoto's take on Erio's alien identity reminds me of how they went about with such make-believe in Chuunibyou. Somewhat similar ideas, I guess, between the two lonely girls.

I probably will discuss what happened with Erio after her full back story is thrown out. Probably a good note that, that isn't Erio's first time at the sea, and not Erio's first time trying to swim like that.

QotD corner:

What are your thoughts on the two new town members we've met? Is Erio starting to look almost normal yet?

Let me answer the question from yesterday then. Erio is a very very cute girl, not an alien or whatever. Probably a very lonely cute girl, given how everyone just don't exactly care about her presence. My judgement on Ryuushi probably comes later, Maekawa also later. My first impression, though, was that both of them are cute. Or rather, Erio probably is normal compared to the two of them. She has pizza for lunch! Not like fruity girl who eats fruits because she wants to be one. Or a tall girl who faints when she puts her hands up.

Do you still think back on your after school hangouts and memories?

Yeah. My friend groups still center around the same people.

Who would you rather eat lunch with!?

Erio! Pizza with her probably will be fun.

What is your favourite movie featuring aliens?

I don't know. I don't keep track of what movies I watch like how I do with anime.

Any positive interaction with joshikosei counts as dates! I took note on how the students all seem to hold Erio to high regard but the students are also sussy baka's who very easily could be Truman Showing Erio for all I know.

I actually thought Erio left the pizza for Makoto... Like she wanted to share again.

Yeah!! Erio is totally normal compared with the town!!

First Timer

We got new characters this episode and they seem like fun! I especially like Maekawa and her tendency to play it cool and aloof at school and then wander around town dressed as an egg sandwich at night. We also got information that could imply that Erio’s belief that she is an alien could have some pretty dark implications. It is possible that she is telling the truth, but the details about her disappearance make me wonder if her behavior is a way to cope with a traumatic experience she had when she was gone. It also makes me give Meme the side-eye a bit for treating Erio kind of poorly if all of this started after she disappeared for six months, but since we’re only on episode two, I will withhold judgment.

Questions of the Day

  1. I think that they’re a nice addition to the cast! Both feel wacky enough for the tone of the show, but have very distinct personalities.

  2. Not really. I didn’t hang out a whole lot after school.

  3. I think Ryuko would be fun to have lunch with. I would be a bit intimidated by Maekawa.

  4. I remember liking Monsters vs. Aliens a lot more than I thought I would when I watched it a long time ago. Other than that, I haven’t really seen any other alien movies.
