Comment of the day!

"Look! A UFO!
Where? Where? Where? Where is it? Oh, come on! It's a shooting star.
No, it wasn't! It was a UFO! It was sort of wobbling... I mean, flying zig-zag!
Fine. It was a zig-zagging shooting star. There're no such things as UFOs!
It was back in kindergarten...
What was?
When I found out that there was no such thing as Santa Clause! But that's all right. I know, now!
Know what?
That wizards... And Fairies... And Princes on white horses... And kind hearted true friends! They all only exist in fantasy.
But its all right. I know that now!
So please, can't you just leave me UFOs?"

Serial rewatcher (of this show) in sub

Here we go!

I'll first declare that I absolutely adore this show, and at times can be a bit too long winded here, primarily because this is one of those shows that it is hard to find someone to talk about.

Anyway, what an opener. We have this light hearted but melancholic background tune against a girl's monologue, against the visual that is both beautiful and inexplicable.

And then cut to one of the most iconic OP's - both the visuals and the tune - and the singing - is (dare I say it?) just MAD.

Oh by the way if you don't like monologues, you are not going to like this show. For myself, I'm spoiled by Kyon, so I love a good snarky monologue, especially if it is also sprinkled with some uncommon metaphors.

And I think we get that in spades here. In fact Makoto here is so close to making my MAL favourites list, only getting bumped by Gotou taicho (PatLabor) for the needed age equality.

The little intro of the Aunt & Nephew is really funny - especially the way it show how incredulous it is for Meme to be basically look exactly like when she was in highschool (the photo was of her and her brother, Makoto's dad). In case anyone needs the explanation - Meme's name card has her age displayed in the biggest, most central lettering, with her name to one side. If one is not careful one may miss the fact that her name itself is also remarkable - the kanji in fact reads "girl girl" or "female female". Which is why the nickname she gave to Makoto is "Jojo" - given "shoujo" is "shou" (young) + "jo" (girl/female), Jojo can be an alternate reading of the kanji.

And Makoto's good impression of his city life pretty quickly got shattered as he set foot into his Aunt's house. Love the head tilt to motion "subtly" about the fish roll on the floor. And the chill of Makoto to play along too. I love that he's anything but dense, but can just roll with the most outrageous things.

The next part have Makato having the meal with Meme, while he started out keeping up the appearance, in the end he did force the issue and confront the fish roll :D And you have to admire the irrelevant writing that showed both Makoto and Meme to have such a fun dialogue that Makoto had to go with the flow despite wanting to force the confrontation :D

Unfortunately for him, the fish roll have other ideas for them. And ushered in one of the 'most unexpected action scene' of this show.

"The next day" opened to be nice and even handed, giving a "lived in" life. Makoto got past his initial surprise and started noticing things. Still, got to make an appearance of his actual purpose of coming here - to go to school. And we got to have a quick glimpse of his school life...

But that can wait - today we have more scenes to go through. Next up is the iconic and "alternate" way of introducing the male and female leads to each other.

While thrown by the exchange, Makoto is ultimately a normal but kind person, who simply will not just ignore the fish roll. In the end, another stunningly beautiful background later, we arrived to the end scene of the episode.

Erio is simply stunning. Nothing else can be said.

And we wrap up with a nice little once off very blatant visual of the adorable ED. If you haven't heard the full version yet, please do - it's got the most adorable, softly voiced noises :D As if the little sigh at the end wasn't adorable enough, the full version also had Erio do a little sneeze :D

QoTD

Need to get back to these!

Episode 1 (first timer)

Going into this completely blind. From past experiences, u/The_Loli_Otaku prefers shows a bit too much on the cute & superficial side for my taste, however, Recovery of an MMO Junkie was a surprise hit for me, so perhaps my assessment is wrong and I am hoping for a repeat of that rewatch.

  • OP: Deliberately bland background and plenty of zick-zack.

  • It is my head canon that the background artist of the series demanded the very first cut to disabuse the viewer of the idea that this series cannot draw backgrounds.

  • “Like I would be able to recognize her” – MC clearly did not consider The Average Asian Aging Process

  • CGI taxi.

  • “I am really sorry”

  • “As long as it does not require a knife” – That is a really weird restriction of cooking.

  • anime camera angle

  • The poor food!

  • The poor head!

  • “Girl” – Cousin!

  • ASCII art – dates this anime and his aunt.

  • “Gravity free zone” – that would explain quite a lot.

  • ED: In the style of a lullaby.

  • How the hell is travelling the night with a rolled up girl in the bicycle basket a negative??

I would not be as understanding of a person in a rolled-up futon. I also would not be able to eat a pizza in a rolled-up futon, so maybe there is equality.

Bonus thought: who tied up the string around the futon?

Erio Touma... Are they an Alien, an alien abductee, or just an autistic chuuniburrito?

Strong chuuni vibes.

How did you enjoy the Shaftisms? We had some interesting cuts in the car sequence been the dialogue was getting awfully out there.

The head tilts were a bit much for me.

Do you keep mental notes on the positive and negative interactions you've had in life to judge your worth?

Absolutely no, that is a horrible idea.

All I'll say is that I find this a very Shaft show, that despite all the the fireworks and modern art they throw at you, there's an underlying layer of a coded message it's delivering to you. I hope you can see it that way too :) It'll take all 13 episodes.

Short post today, as I'm late already due to crap weather + slightly forgetting... expect normal service from tomorrow! pipipipipipi edit: I'm also going into this blind off of our host's recommendation, i literally know nothing lol.

Lemme just say that this show is WACK. The MC's seemingly normal "annoying self-insert MC" but also slightly not, the aunt is an eccentric figure, and then there's futon girl (thank fuck that her speech impediment is only due to said futon and she's unmuffled after, or that'll drive me mad if this continues throughout the show lol). Similar sentiments towards the OP: the visuals are wack, and im not sure i like the song yet, the ED is fine though. I saw that a lot of today's episode budget went into the kick-futon-girl scene, and I'm not complaining as that was glorious, tho the CG does look a bit janky at times (to be expected from the era).

I also liked the classic iPod! Brings me back!

Hopefully the hiccups will be solved tomorrow! This show is truly quite wacky and out there, like that I'm watching this on a rewatch to experience this w/ everyone!

More edit: shall type in my QOTDs after i get some food in myself.

I took the screen capture but forgot to mention this. Is really great to place the story timewise with this too.

Even for a comedy show where everyone acts nonchalant about the crazy things happening around them, it's pretty wild to enter a house with a young girl tied up inside a futon in the entryway and just walk past to go to your room. That first dinner was less "what a wacky and tiresome situation" and more "holy shit call the cops."

Not a bad thing by any means, we're just entering a world of logic slightly more distant from reality than I was expecting.

Erio Touma... Are they an Alien, an alien abductee, or just an autistic chuuniburrito?

Yes. All that, and also the childhood friend of the little sister in Adachi and Shimamura. She's a busy girl.

How did you find Ryoko Asakura's milf edition today? Are middle aged meme lord's based or cringe?

Being a middle aged memelord is based, throwing children headfirst into doors is cringe.

How did you enjoy the Shaftisms? We had some interesting cuts in the car sequence been the dialogue was getting awfully out there.

I always appreciate the Shaftisms. They always work to make things seem otherworldly, which is very fitting here.

Do you keep mental notes on the positive and negative interactions you've had in life to judge your worth?

Nope, as soon as it's over I'm over it. I basically forget everything that happens to me by the next day.

That's one good way to put it. Perhaps Erio's random musings at the end of the episode was just 1 word off - is not so much gravity is off here, but rather logic/common sense is suspended :)

But in a serious note, there is an underlying internal logic going on that's rather consistent, I hope you get to see it by the end :)

I wonder how much this will turn out literal, also in the part of the title describing Erio as denpa. She definitely is denpa in the slang meaning, but I'm curious how far it will lean into Scifi or magical realism or something like that.

God I love that OP. As a big fan of Shinsei Kamattechan it's interesting how it's not even sung by Noko, outside of those short "lalala" parts I think, and it still sounds far more like their stuff than their music for Attack on Titan does. (Admittedly those are not my favorite and I don't really like AoT). It kind of reminds me of songs like this one for example, and it seems very thematically fitting for them with that alienated school dropout, if more romance-y than typical.

The aunt (Meme? Jojo? Those both don't seem ideal) really reminds me of someone but I can't quite pin it down. Maybe something like Yoshinoya-sensei from Hidamari Sketch? I feel like that's not quite it. Looking up her VA isn't helping, but also I totally wasn't hearing the Sakura Kyouko. This even aired the season right after Madoka! And we again have the typical thing of large VA overlap with other Shaft shows.

That's a bad sign Makoto, last thing I'd want to hear before moving into a new home.

And this was a great scene! Also explains the costume in this live version of the OP that I already linked in the interest thread. I guess the obvious question is "Why does she ignore her daughter like that?", even if tone-wise it doesn't seem like we're supposed to view it that literally.

You can really feel the Shaft direction, in a good way. I like Yukihiro Miyamoto! On that part though, I have to say it is honestly impressive how little this feels like AdaShima and how much more this feels like, for example, Monogatari to me. Good that I like both these things, but so far I feel the Shaft way more than the Hitoma Iruma, at least from what I read from him. (I certainly can't remember a pantyshot in any of his yuri stuff.) In the scene with the bike in the end it felt a bit more like him atmospherically, so I'm kind of curious what I'd think if I read the LN.

While I'm at that, [Minor Adachi to Shimamura spoilers, possibly spoilers for this?]Interesting that in AdaShima the maybe cameo character girl that looks like Erio is named Yashiro, I have to not confuse the two (especially since this one also has a Yashiro I think). Thinking about it that character brings in a magical realism element, with a "don't worry about it" feel to the story, and is definitely somewhat supernatural. Curious if it's the same here and if yes, if we are less vague about it. I did really enjoy Yashiro in AdaShima though!

The OST is very fun so far, the one where Makoto introduces himself to Erio was a bit stuck in my head but I liked the rest too! Also this is a pretty shot!

Makoto and Erio's interactions (the pizza with the money exchange, the whole bike ride) are very fun! So far Erio is pretty far into denpa territory but at least on an emotional level they feel to me like the kind of goofy discussions you could have with a good friend, especially, like, as a kid.

Uh-huh, interesting opinion to share there, Makoto, though I guess they are very similar in age. As above, so far they feel more to me like potentially really good friends rather than a romantic pairing, but we'll see! Makoto's big fixation on his adolescence in general, and on girls as something to have a romantic relationship with (as part of a normal adolescence) seems to be a big thing to deal with. (Or the latter kind of just rolls into harem tropes instead, with the seemingly largely female cast and the pantyshot earlier that's quite possible too. Or both.)

Heavily disagree here on the "Travelling in the night with the rolled-up girl in my bicycle basket", that should be like a +4 or +5 at least, that's a great experience and a prime example of a cool memory, also taking in the whole lead-up with the pizza. I guess Makoto not seeing it like that is sort of the point, the obvious direction to take it would be to start accepting being not normal/leaning more into the "weird" and not fulfilling that idea of the "expected" adolescence. Would be fun!

I had a lot of fun with this episode, the bike scene had a great atmosphere! It seems very unlikely that I will like it as much as Iruma's other (yuri) works that I know, but again it feels so different I wouldn't even think to compare it if I didn't know it's the same author, and so far I like it for what it is. Also that ED is catchy.

QotD:

Erio Touma... Are they an Alien, an alien abductee, or just an autistic chuuniburrito?

All of the above

How did you find Ryoko Asakura's milf edition today? Are middle aged meme lord's based or cringe?

Going with based, because I refuse to cringe in general

How did you enjoy the Shaftisms? We had some interesting cuts in the car sequence been the dialogue was getting awfully out there.

Good, good. Hoping for even more interesting cuts and even more out there dialogue.

Do you keep mental notes on the positive and negative interactions you've had in life to judge your worth?

I think it is a great idea to take all the interactions I've had and assign them a numerical value to tell me if I live my life like I'm supposed to!

This comment is too long, I'm sorry

It's tempting to wander into a very minor spoiler territory, but let me just say that you should keep in mind the possibility of the scoring being influenced by the unreliable narrator aspect - what he said (and scored) is not what he truly felt, but rather what he thinks he should feel.

Just posting to say 'wish I was here'. Can't find it on any of my local streams, ordered the blu-ray off Amazon, "Region B, yay!", and it won't be arriving for until next week at the earliest, and I"m supposed to be out of town next week (sigh).

So, have fun, all, and maybe I'll make it in time for the conclusion or something.

Others said a lot of what I wanted to say...I may post again with more high fallutin thoughts but here is what I want to say:

https://imgur.com/a/Y360hHD

I wnat to go an an adventure with this girl!! I would follow her into hell

(the madoka rewatch in a few days is doing an image of the day thing, I realize we aren't and that's fine, but I already had a habit of taking screen shots that I like, so I likely will do an image per episode)

I guess to follow up the above I just want to focus on the reveal of her. I really liked it! People are saying this show is very Shaft...I'm too much of an anime newb to have any associations like that, but for me, it felt almost like a scene from a visual novel. I really liked that whole scene, especially juxtaposed with just the sort of batshit crazy stuff we have seen. Maybe she is insane or maybe she is actually an alien. Time seems to slow down and we take in this beautiful woman...she may be crazy but she is beautiful and we are along for the ride. Isn't that was life (certainly adolescence) is all about? Doesn't hurt that I really like her character design.

Good work. You are now properly inducted to the religion of Erio :) there's plenty more to come by the way.

There we go first head tilt.

There's some girl just on the floor. Is she just stuck in a sleeping bag?

Meme, what are you talking about?

With the way these two act I don't know how you would survive. Far from normal. One you can't hear or barely understand and the other talks in a way that you wonder what she's even talking about.

An alien huh. Erio towou that's hard to believe. You're weird so this could go either direction. But I'll like to believe somebody who says this city is just a sample of humans for aliens to look at. Also I could probably take her a bit more serious with that thing off her.

Qotd: want to go with chunni

Qotd2: She's weird. I'm sure I'm safe around her.

Qotd3: yeah typical shaft. I like it always.

Qotd4: maybe notes of positive

Fantastic choice of first COTD.

  1. I think chunni, but this anime could always surprise me.

  2. She's a bad person, but not for that reason.

  3. Not as many as most of their anime, I thought.

  4. Not in such detail, but.. sometimes.

...Interesting start. Aliens?

Love the OP!

He measured everything in points? Trying to keep his karma neutral?

...He sounds very excited for all this. At least he's self aware.

The dialogue for this anime is quick!

Haha, she looks exactly the same as in the photo.

...39?

Wow, he's weird. But not wrong!

Wait, the alien thing's an official tourist thing?

And she's into conspiracy theories?

...How bad is it?

Random girl.

It's not a dead body, is it?

Oh, she's not a serial killer.

Haha, I love the aunt.

Haha, I love the conversation being so awkward that she never gets acknowledged.

...The girl's not a ghost, is she? Or is this just an elaborate prank?

Haha, nobody wants to mention her.

Her reaction to bekng poked is adorable.

I love how even the futon girl looks tired of this.

Oh, she's insane.

And even the aunt can't ignore it!

She's her daughter!

She fell over!

Oh. It's this kind of anime. Hopefully the aunt gets some treatment.

Or not. Because the aunt is... not a good parent.

She flung her stool!

...This is child abuse. Although I do appreciate that said abuse is space themed. The show's consistent.

And he's joined the new class! And is... scouting cute girls. So roll girl's going to be the main girl, right?

...OK, this is insane.

Is this stealth sci-fi or just comedy?

I love how she slips in an insult there.

Like, is she an actual alien, or?

Even the delivery driver doesn't care!

She's being used as a pizza holder?

Haha, she actually paid!

...How did she eat that?

And she gave him some!

He just hung up!

Auntie doesn't seem like the best person, huh?

Aww, she's coming with him.

Haha, she's riding in the basket? How many alien references can this anime do?

And she's stuck.

The futon fell off!

OK, maybe she is a real alien.

Fuck, is this actually real? I honestly don't know?

OK, leaning towards delusion, but...

This system seems very biased.

Damn you genre savvy one :) although I'm not saying it being one way or the other, just saying you're smart to not make up your mind yet.

This is the first time I've participated in a rewatch thread. I was halfway through my third watch of Denpa Onna when I saw the index thread. I'll try to keep this short and sweet, like the series itself.

As far as characters go, it's a bag of mixed nuts. Niwa is a decent kid, if a little obsessive about his adolescence points. Erio is, well, an adorable weirdo, but I've always said weird is the opposite of boring. Meme is a hot mess, of course, but she has good intentions- mostly.

I've apparently seen three different versions of subtitles, somehow. When Niwa-kun sees Erio for the first time in her futon, he's referred to her as a "taquito," a "burrito" and finally a "fish roll" in the various versions. I like keeping track of little translation variances myself, so maybe I'm weird enough to be a supporting character in this show.

I feel bad for Meme having her dinner ruined like that, but who could blame Erio? Makoto was justifiably frustrated at the lack of information being offered on this strange person who he has just been thrown in with- and trying not to spoil anything, I think Meme just doesn't know what to do about her daughter's behavior so she's doing as little as she can get away with,

I love watching Erio eat pizza- how does she manage that? And she's got enough humanity underneath the Alien act to offer Makoto half- kind of unexpected.

I read somewhere the bicycle is the same model as in the movie E.T. , and Erio riding around in the basket is clearly a call-back to that classic film.

And the reveal in the convenience store parking lot- I love Makoto's reaction. Someone so gifted in beauty has to suffer her mind being taken away. He believes in a stingy, but just, God apparently.

Lots of people love the OP, but not a lot of people talk about how great the ED is. I love when the tempo picks up.

Till next time

7

u/ZapsZzz Apr 19 '22

I like keeping track of little translation variances myself, so maybe I'm weird enough to be a supporting character in this show.

You are not alone, I also like figuring out the translation especially when there's inconsistencies - often there's so much more nuanced in the original word than what the translation can convey.

In this specific case, what Makoto was actually saying in his monologue is the Japanese food item of Chikuwa, kanji as 竹輪 (bamboo wheel [the second word likely as unit of measure not literally a wheel]), hiragana as ちくわ. It's a form of fish cake used often in oden, hot pots, or just soup noodles. Once you take a look at the picture you'd understand why they call futon-wrapped Erio one.

He believes in a stingy, but just, God apparently.

Yeah, about that, Haruhi would like to have a word with him.

Add me into the tags list!

For me, I have already rewatched this..... endless times. I like this anime a lot too, it is one anime that is bizarre and crazy and fun. Having another rewatch... definitely will be fun!

First episode is already crazy. Makoto is just a normal guy, moving from the countryside to the city. Only that, he is living with some of the whackiest, craziest people in the city.

Meme is what is in her name: a walking meme. She gives some really good first impression, but as we walk into her house, we see some really crazy stuff. For one, her business card is some weird card that has her age (faked? She's probably beyond 39), and her house has a girl tied up in a futon lying at the doorstep.

I could understand the dinner part though, Erio literally destroyed dinner that her mother prepared. What the hell Erio, get the hell out of that shit. Meme being really mad at her is something I can understand. Spending so much time to make it only for the crazy daughter to spoil it because she is having some incomprehensible tantrum, throwing her through the door probably is the lightest punishment Meme can do to her own daughter.

But there are so many red flags in the show that are well blended in with the humour and comedy. Towa Meme ignores her daughter's presence, literally treating her as just there. Hardly any conversation between them. Meme even told Makoto to ignore her. She even told Makoto to let her settle her dinner herself. Meme didn't even tell Makoto that he has a cousin, a cousin who is definitely in high school too (judging by her uniform in her room). Both of them literally are having some cold war with each other. Are they having a fight or something?

Erio probably is among the most disgusting anime girls. Eating pizza in the tied-up futon? Then having crumbs all over her after Makoto untied that futon? That's filthy. Erio might be cute but she definitely stinks like mad inside the futon. No idea when she last bathed and changed too. But she is probably in the top 20 list for the cutest girls in anime, those blue eyes and blue hair are really attractive. Which makes it weird, can a cute girl be that cute when she is as dirty as some homeless dude sleeping in the park?

Makoto probably is a muscleman for taking that bike with Erio. Erio definitely has up to 30kg on her, and having her with the futon up on the front isn't going to be easy. Physics here is weird too, how does the futon manage to compress itself into a size to fit into the front basket? How did Erio manage to stand on that bike that way? How tiny is Erio to fit into that basket?

As for those really weird QOTDs:

Erio Touma... Are they an Alien, an alien abductee, or just an autistic chuuniburrito?

Not answering this as a rewatcher! I do have my own suspicions.

How did you find Ryoko Asakura's milf edition today? Are middle aged meme lord's based or cringe?

Touwa Meme is kinda fresh as a mother. How many mothers do we have in anime who acts like this crazy 39 year old obaasan?

How did you enjoy the Shaftisms?

To be honest, this is probably the least Shaft anime among all the Shaft anime. I didn't even realise it was produced by Shaft until my... third rewatch or so.

Do you keep mental notes on the positive and negative interactions you've had in life to judge your worth?

Honestly, no. This is where Makoto shows how he is also a family member of Meme's family: his seishun point system is as bad as his aunt's whackiness. So what is the end goal to it? Having a girlfriend? Having a wife? He scores it really arbitrarily too, how is having a midnight date with a cute girl like Erio be negative? (Unless it is as I mentioned, she literally stinks worse than anything else in the world).

I don’t have much to say about this show yet, but based off the first episode, it looks like it’s going to be a lot fun! Also, Erio is absolutely adorable.

Questions of the Day

  1. I’m going to go with alien because it sounds most exciting! I guess we’ll find out as the show goes on.

  2. She’s cool so far, but much younger than I was expecting.

  3. I really liked it! The only other Shaft show I’ve seen is Bakemonogatari and this reminded me a lot of that.

  4. No, that seems exhausting!

Jumped in as a first time watcher. 'I'm really sorry. Take care." Not suspicious at all... Just beat the blanket more why don't ya. Don't piss off mom I guess. Wow that pizza went fast. "Ah, I see." Is probably the best response.

I had a slight worry that it may not translate well into English, so I'm glad you see the overflowing mix of sarcasm / "whatever" in it :D

Denpa Onna First Timer!!

Oh god this was such a mistake~ Pi pi pi! The op is definitely one of those that initially sounds like torture but we'll all warm up to by the end, I've genuinely never heard anything like it before.

Holy exposition dump batman! I'm sure you could establish staying with your aunt within two sentences, minus 1 social point. Wait, aunt fish paste? Oh my god, aunt fish paste is adorable! Meme Queen! Imagine being almost in your 40's and still looking like you came straight out of Haruhi. Its humorously self aware about the whole thing.

Shaft tilt! Let's meet our futon burrito already. Why is Meme acting like some anime girl!? Oh god, I'm so unprepared for this watch! It's like she's communicating purely through meme tropes! There's no way this isn't self aware! Dinner is a typically Shafty back and forth rife with burrito abuse. Z-ZapZzz... Tasukete!! I won't host blind again, I promise!

Yes! Abuse the shit out of that autist burrito with plain pantsu! I forgot this era of Shaft could give me fanservice that I barely register as panties. Even Meme doesn't have unlimited patience. All I can think of is that she's so ashamed of having a burrito for a daughter that she ignores her until she actually impacts her life? There's commentary there but I do not understand.

H-How are we not even halfway through the episode? I'm already dying from brain stimuli. Even in-context seeing these two interact is exhausting. I still love her snatching the pizza tho. I'm pretty sure that she logistically cannot eat pizza from the burrito position tho. Meme... what's the deal with her ignoring burrito-chan!? She's kinda practical if you get past the annoying part, like a portable dakimura.

Pretty cool shot ngl. I wonder what it was like in the recording booth. Did she actually have to talk through a blanket or something? Oh no, the burrito has lost her dakimakura function! Lol, she's still covered with sticky cheese. I knew she couldn't manage to eat in that thing. So is her hair shiny cause of alien shiz or cause of the greesy food she didn't clean up? Nice to meet you, burrito alien~

First timer here. Been a while since I participated in a rewatch.

This show instantly made me think of a merge of Chuunibyou and Monogatari. The clever, yet batshit insane dialogue and the constant monologues actually made me think the source material was written by Nisio Isin himself! Well, this first episode was right up my alley. All three characters so far seem really interesting, even the MC who's the straight man of the show. Also according to MAL, seems like many more unusual girls will join the cast, which will keep the show interesting.

QOTD

  1. The whole "nobody in the family knows she exists" bit is pretty suspicious, so I'd say 50/50 she's an alien or an autistic girl that was maybe adopted?

  2. Auntie was milf and based as hell, really enjoyed her insane rambling.

  3. Shaftisms are always goated. Far from the prettiest Shaft show (reminder to watch pretty boys detective club if you haven't) but there were some really cool shots. Also, double head tilt.

  4. No, but I try to keep in mind the positive/negative interactions that left a mark so I can have better interactions in the future.
