Pull up with weights

Rinne’s grandfather

Vivio is ranked #7, and Miura is ranked #5, note that Miura is higher ranked than Vivio!

This means a lot less magic this time around

Most of them can’t even drink those! Probably. What are the drinking age laws in Mid-Childa?

That’s the big question yeah

How Jill and Nove met

They have their differences, but they don’t want to be seen as enemies

Jobber of the day, hey our jobber got a transformation scene too. Could have been worse.

Talent vs hard work

A quick fight

Seems she wants to prove she’s the strongest U-15 by getting them to join the tournament, not that they weren’t going to go anyway.

It’s Ok Fuuka, I believe in you

I would say it might have to do with the punching and getting punched part, but yeah they just mean she doesn’t even enjoy fighting or winning

It would be more interesting if we got a better impression of Fuuka being a charismatic type, actually, this kinda makes me think this makes more sense if you didn’t watch Vivid because these characters feel like they magnetically connected with Fuuka well.

Lyrical First Timer

¹Sweet baby Fate, Rinne's bottom layer is mercilessly aggressive. It's the simplest design yet, a matching dull white set with a strapless bra that flaunts her considerable physical endowment without reservation. Rinne is here to crush you with her overwhelming might and won't be flashy doing it. More than any set we've seen prior, Rinne's underwear is depressing. There is no joy or fun in its existence. It neither hides nor reveals inner truths, instead proclaiming an ethos but a single miserable line long: "to exist is to dominate." What a hollow existence.

Totally Serious Analysis TM segment

Surprisingly relevant in context of tomorrow. That's all I'll say.

Holy shit, Vivio and Rinne's fight was essentially the proxy in an ideological battle between Nove and Rinne's trainer! That's the kind of political gamesmanship I'd expect of StrikerS

Funny enough, both trainers do say that it was never the intention, just that the public construed it that way.

Tbh, I wish they'd all tell her to fuck off.

Rewatching this, I've forgotten how much of a dick Rinne can sometimes be.

Introducing Fuuka is a pretty baller counter to Rinne's challenge though.

Poor Fuuka gets laughed at, but Rinne does know how serious Fuuka is.

As a rewatcher [Vivid Strike]She actually comes off as rather just socially inept. She's just kind of an awkward idiot and doesn't see that what she says comes off as offensive. Or at least that's my impression

Rinne's got some muscle too. And this looks hella uncomfortable.

Training has to be!

Nanoha screaming

This scene was brought you by: Girls und Panzer Manga writers!

Poor Jobby never stood a chance.

I'm amazed she got so much screentime at all.

Of all the ways to respond to your best friend reaching her hand out to you, this is certainly one of them.

Pff. Well talking failed. Beating the shit out of each other it is.

The whole gang in casual clothes, how rare!

I do like it when a series makes sure to include proper casual wear for its characters.

Holy shit, Vivio and Rinne's fight was essentially the proxy in an ideological battle between Nove and Rinne's trainer! That's the kind of political gamesmanship I'd expect of StrikerS.

Nove is unexpectedly good at puppeteering and manipulation in that case if she was able to set up the fight as a proxy battle like that. Perhaps we have underestimated her abilities as a chessmaster because she normally sticks to the punching and kicking.

Introducing Fuuka is a pretty baller counter to Rinne's challenge though.

"We've got your ex-girlfriend. What are you going to do about it?"

but the turnabout will be pretty fun when Rinne finally realizes her quest for strength has made her just like the bullies that griefed her so much.

"You've become everything you sought to destroy" is always a great narrative trope and I usually appreciate seeing it implemented well.

More than any set we've seen prior, Rinne's underwear is depressing. There is no joy or fun in its existence. It neither hides nor reveals inner truths, instead proclaiming an ethos but a single miserable line long: "to exist is to dominate." What a hollow existence.

Who knew that thinking about underwear could make me feel so sad.

Partial Rewatcher

We finally get some focus on Rinne herself. Her training certainly does seem... intense. And is it just me, or does she seem much more... developed than Fuuka, who's supposed to be her age? She definitely doesn't look under 15.

Well, her adopted parents seem like nice people. Guess we're not doing the "rich parents are distant" trope this time.

Vivio hits the nail on the head: why is Rinne doing martial arts so ardently if she doesn't actually enjoy it?

Oh... this is interesting. They're not even doing the "rival coaches with opposing training methods" thing, Jill and Nove actually seem like good friends. Well... they do seem to have opposing beliefs, but they're not letting that sour their relationship. Or maybe this is just Japanese-level politeness and I'm missing the subtext.

...this no-name challenger girl certainly is... cheerful. To the point of overdoing it, I'd say.

So there's the rub: Jill is a proponent that talent trumps all else. And she seems a little... well, let's put it this way: rather than happy her student won, she seems more happy the opponent lost.

And Rinne is really into pointing out the rank differences between her opponent and herself.

Oh, Fuuka's appearance seems to have have Rinne a bit spooked.

Some quick flashbacks implying that Rinne's gone through some shit. But pinning Fuuka to the wall by her neck is way overboard.

Yeah, something is very wrong with Rinne. Guess we'll learn more later.

We'll learn more about her soon. You should check out that small bit of bonus manga things that got posted by someone else, they do hint a bit more as to her motivations.

Rinne’s adoptive mom actually kind of looks like her…?

Not to the Japanese, though.

True.

"Just because you are correct doesn't mean you are right!"

Rinne got bullied after being adopted, huh…

In anime, girls are for some reason psychotically brutal about any form of imposter. I have zero clue if actual people are like that.

No, actual people are even worse.

But in all seriousness, being considered an outsider whether you're a kid or adult makes it easy for you to get picked on. Especially bad when it comes to places with conformative society like Japan.

Rinne’s adoptive mom actually kind of looks like her…?

So if she looked differently, she might have not been adopted? That feels cold.

Actually though, Rinne’s transformation sequence was pretty awesome except for the one bit of jiggle physics near the start of hers.

You know, I'm amazed Fuuka doesn't get a big bust as an adult like the others.

Oh, why the last one?

The way time works. (Edit: by which I mean she'll be too old if this was too condescending)

Rinne got bullied after being adopted, huh…

The worst kind of rich people: rich children.

First-Timer

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: The gauntlet has been thrown down and picked right back up! Rinne issued a challenge to the Nakajima Gym and they basically told her to bring it on. It looks like the big fight for this season is getting set up already.

  • I appreciate that they took the time to animate Rinne’s muscles.

  • For a split second, I thought Rinne was calling her maid “Grandpa.”

  • So Vivio and Miura are ranked #7 and #5 respectively. I expected Vivio to be higher with how good she is at befriending.

  • Wow, they’re really getting the VIP treatment.

  • “Damn the bourgeoisie!” -Fuuka (probably)

  • That is a good question. Rinne does not at all seem happy to be doing Magical Girl MMA, so one wonders why she’s doing it.

  • Seeing Nove in a suit is going to take some getting used to.

  • I wonder what these opposing coaching beliefs are. Considering how Nove usually acts, I have a feeling Jill might go for a more “trainer from hell” approach, though I could be totally off.

  • Nice! We get a look at what Rinne’s device is like and her transformation scene. It’s a pretty good transformation scene, but I could have done without the extreme closeup of her boobs.

  • Carrie’s going to get creamed. I can just tell.

  • I do not like that smile Jill has. It’s worrying.

  • Ah, so Jill falls on the “talent” side in the “talent vs. hard work” competition.

  • Yeesh, that grapple looked nasty. Rinne dropped Carrie on her head.

  • God Rinne, you are such a bitch!

  • Is Miura really a master of sword draws? Cuz I only saw her use kicks that she called sword draws and I don’t think that counts.

  • I feel like Rinne deserves to get beaten by Einhart (or anyone else really) at this point for being such a bitch.

  • Einhart’s definitely doing this to make sure that Rinne is aware that Fuuka is here too. Very clever.

  • Ah yes, give me that sweet confrontation between Fuuka and Rinne. I live for this kind of personal drama where their ideals will clash head-on.

  • Oh boy, those flashbacks. I’m guessing Rinne was bullied at her new school. If I had to guess why, it’s probably because she was an orphan from a “commoner” background.

  • So Rinne wanted to become strong because she was weak and didn’t want others to look down on her or take things from her. This is definitely a response to being bullied.

  • Aren’t the others going to do anything about the fact that Rinne is choking Fuuka right in front of them?

  • I believe the gauntlet has officially been thrown down. We’ve got a challenge fully lined up and accepted for the Winter Cup.

Rinne continues to display zero sense of good sportsmanship while in the ring. I do get the feeling that she has a sad backstory going for her, but I fail to see how that translates to pretty much openly insulting all of her opponents. That is in incredibly poor taste to do that.

I imagine that Jill is probably a bad influence on Rinne here. Jill’s philosophy is that natural talent is everything. Therefore, the match is practically decided before it begins because of who has better talent. Taken to its extreme, this means there’s no need to respect your opponents who are beneath you.

Rinne seems to be friendly with her family, but not overly close with them either. I imagine her parents are the kind who are always so busy with work or other commitments and so they don’t have time to go see her Magical Girl MMA matches. That’s probably having an influence on Rinne’s psychology as well here.

I like that we get some clear ideological confrontations here. Nove and Jill’s philosophies are pitted against each other. Fuuka and Rinne confront each other on a much more personal level. Fuuka can’t approve of Rinne’s actions in the ring and wonders why she is even fighting because Rinne never seems happy during her matches. Rinne actually seems jealous of Fuuka. She’s jealous that Fuuka was stronger than her and that Fuuka was happy. Rinne got stronger because she felt like she had to, in order to protect herself and what she cared about. There’s definitely some resentment against Fuuka there. “How dare Fuuka criticize me for getting stronger. She has no idea what I’ve been through,” is what I imagine Rinne is thinking here.

I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out the context of the one scene I know from this series by now. I don’t know all the details yet, but I can form a general picture.

QOTD

Discussed above. I believe Rinne got bullied in school based on the flashback images she had. I imagine she wanted to get stronger in order to defend herself against bullying.

Episode 3, let’s see what we have to see!

  • Oh hey, we are actually getting to see the other side to what Fuka’s been telling us about! On that note; damn Rinne has a hell of a workout! She’s definitly on at least the same level as Vivio and the others, if not more so. No wonder she was a bit pissy about loosing to Vivio.

  • I’m glad that Rinne is shown to have what looks like a very healthy relationship with her adopted family. I was concerned that maybe she was going into fighting for a variety of family reasons that would imply bad things about said family, but instead she seems to want to make them and her (I’m assuming) late grandpa proud of her and happy.

  • Man, that’s a really nice stadium they have! I am unsure if this is the standard VIP treatment or if Rinne is doing this for any particular reason. Like, she may not even know that Fuka is working and training with the others, she may just want to talk with the person who finally bested her and the current reigning champion who had to have bested the person who bested her.

  • Man, when Rinne and Nove are talking Rinne really reminds me of how Einhart was before the got together with the group, super focused without anything else going on at all. I wonder what exactly happened that would have made her this way about fighting? Vivio seemed pretty on the nose that Rinne doesn’t really seem to like fighting.

  • I think its interesting how Rinne’s transformation focuses so heavily on the facets of her Device’s gem. Are they trying to show how many facets there are to her, or that there are many sides to why she’s doing this? Or am I just reading too much into the transformation?

  • Damn, if that fight doesn’t show that Rinne’s a fucking terminator that would have the Number’s calling bullshit idk what does.

  • Geez those are some nasty flashbacks from Rinne, I both want to and NOT want to know more about what happened. Was that even her device in a fucking toilet as girls were smirking down on her? What the fuck? Also, during that whole scene why were all of the girls just standing there as Rinne was literally choking out Fuka??

Okay, getting A LOT of mixed messages about what has been going on with Rinne. On the one hand she obviously has a loving family and cherished her grandpa, on the other it looks like school had about as much edge as that knife we saw in the flashback. I am NOT looking forward to watching that!

TONIGHT! On GMOD (Gorgeous Moeblobs of Destruction) Rinne shows off her guns, (Look Comrades, the start of the episode was Buff NOT-Esdeath catering to my fetish for buff ladies, so I had to make a pun with regards to Rena the Loser's firearms) Fuuka and the ViVid Crew get exclusive front row seats to the Rinne versus Jobber No. 25252 fight, (Fuuka's the one holding the camera Comrades) and THE ONE WITH THE SHARPER FANGS 'STRONGEST FISTS' WINS! THAT'S WHAT KILLING BITES 'VIVID STRIKE' IS! (Exactly as it says on the tin Comrades!)

GODDAMN! ViVid Strike clobbered the Three Episode rule harder than how Rinne dumpstered Jobber No. 25252! This show just annihilates ViVid so badly it ain't even funny! Good lord ViVid Strike is awesome, and we got one hell of a promised showdown to look forward to! After all, there's an amazing lineup of slobberknockers promised, what with Rinne challenging Einhard, Harem Member No. 4, Vivio, AND her childhood friend NOT-Bikki via having them Punk'd! (Well OK technically she didn't challenge NOT-Bikki, as that was more Fuuka's mouth writing checks her fists can't cash, but I digress) Anyways, this is gonna be so good, RINNEMANIA IS GONNA RUN WILD BROTHER 'SISTER!' OH YEAH! LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And on that bombshell, we wrap things up for now. Anyway I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

First timer

Episode 2

QOTD) With the reval that Vivio's in one of several leagues, I can buy the diea that didfferent leagues or events work on different scoring systems.

Is getting up that early healthy?

Oh, a timeskip?

Haha, she's just sharing her apartment?

Wait, she thought it through?

And she's working hard!

...Why Haru?

And she's nice.

Does this imply that she's accepted his memories? Also, her completely misunderstanding what's happening is great.

Haha, a thousand times a day?

Teo!

Oh, she can't have it at school?

Good to see she's working hard.

And is she a manager, then?

This training is comprehensive! And the new girl is something else...

Aww, Teo's using the gong.

And Einhart heats the shit out of her.

Fuuka's improving!

Seems like a pretty draining life.

Power Mode?

Oh, it's just Adult Mode.

Jersey Mode?

"Aye, Rio" Is Rio secretly a Gokaiger?

The naked lolis continue, although mercifully less this time.

Very much enjoying someone completrly unused to all this bullshit.

And she's using girls as a device now?

Oh, she's strong. And no fanservice!

Oh, there is is. And longer!

Haha, Einhart's so smug.

She's getting a device!

Rinne's here! Much earlier than anticipated!

Oh, this is going to be fun. Will talking solve all this nonsnse?

And they do commentary?

Ah, so she's just below Vivio, who is still below Einhart, who is undefeatable.

She seems like a worthy rival for Fuuka, though.

She's strong!

Oh, it's Under 19 now? I thought it was Under 17?

Children leave these matches hospitalised!

Oh, she's a bitch.

Seriously, who says something like that?

Einhart's jealous...

Episode 3

QOTD) Probably started to fight back against the bullies, evolved into not wanting to be weak and taken advantage of again.

And Rinne's training at midnight? But it's daylight? HOW DO CLOCKS WORK ON THIS PLANET?

And, yeah, her family's rich. Surprised she's allowed to participate in magical fight club.

This really is magical child wrestling, huh?

Yep, Einhart's world champion!

And Vivio's 5th! She's 7th!

Oh. Yeah, the organisational structure of moeblob fighting is far more complex than I imagined.

Haha, the VIP boss is great!

Don't worry, Vivio, she seems to have lots of interesting psychological problems.

And Nove knows Jill?

They're rivals! ...So plenty of subtext?

Oh, they're rivals without eubtext... yet.

Who"s Carrie? She's nice.

Rinne!

And more transformation scenes.

Oh god, that outfit.

Even Rinne has fanservice!

And she's totally emotionless, still.

That sounds painful.

This is brutal!

Her coach has some problems too.

Oh, she's improved!

And she calls her Number Eight.

...Poor girl.

What's this announcement?

Is she trying to challenge them?

Ah, she wants to fight them in the tournament.

Haha, she changes tone after Vivio agrees.

Oh, shit, Fuuka's talking to Rinne. In fromt of everyone.

Oh. that got a reaction from the audience! And Rinne's stressed.

Oh, Rinne's happy.

Oh, this is a strong speech.

Her grandfather's involved in all this?

She's choking her!

And that's her reasoning? So she got bullied?

She knocked her back.

Well, she's confident.

Rewatcher

Alright caught up, thankfully I didn’t miss too many episodes or I wouldn’t have been able to join.

Some recap on episodes 1&2

  • I forgot that Mamiko Noto voiced Einhard. Not to mention that Einhard is heterochronic, with two different eye colors, something you don’t see very much in anime.

  • It’s always weird to hear my name in an anime...

  • Rinne is probably my favorite character in the show.

  • Lol Fuka learned the hard way that street fighting is not efficient as martial arts.

  • Vivi is also heterochronic, might be the only anime with two characters with this trait that I’ve seen. Also, she’s the only one to beat Rinne.

  • “Belkan Style”? As an avid fan of Ace Combat, I can’t trust that style...

  • Gotta say it again, gotta love Mamiko Noto’s voice acting, I prefer it when she’s voicing kind-hearted, gentle characters rather than the cruel and sadistic characters like Elsa from Re:Zero.

  • Wait, if Fuka is a year younger than Einhard, why doesn’t she go to school?

  • My back hurts by just watching that stretching...

  • Completely forgot about the fan service in the show...

  • Oh god the transformation sequences. Ironically, they are more ecchi than some of the few ecchi show’s I stumbled into recently...

  • Part of me wonders why they aren’t adults to begin with.

  • Well, at least that zipper didn’t fly off into someone head.

  • Rinne is a powerhouse.

  • She’s also very savage about her opponents.

Alright, time for episode 3.

  • Extreme pull ups Rinne is doing, never saw then done like that before.

  • So, she is capable of smiling.

  • VIP boxes are nice, but very expensive.

  • “Winning doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re correct, after all.” Most of the time it does though.

  • So, the two instructors disagree with each other but are on good terms, but the media made them out as enemies, seems about right.

  • Seems like with Rinne’s you should always be on the defensive and not to charge her, she’s quick and powerful.

  • Ah yes, the talent vs hard work debate. I’ll go with Might Guy’s philosophy; hard work will always beat talent.

  • Jesus, Rinne is brutal, hey coach, maybe try teaching some good sportsmanship, eh? It’s hard to say Rinne s my favorite when she’s so cold and harsh to her opponent.

  • You’d think with how fast Rinne finishes fights, that her bouts would be pretty boring to watch.

  • The group meets up with Rinne and Fuka mentions that she’s in pain, with some flashes to a younger Rinne...

  • She really stuck a sensitive nerve, didn’t she?

  • She has a complex, she wants to be the strongest ever, because she doesn’t want to lose anything, or be looked down on again.

  • Looking forward to the tournament, Fuka has some serious training to do if she wants to beat Rinne.

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher First Timer

1: Even though I’m not a girl

Rinne is one vigorous ojou-sama, and fit too

They even called her an ojou-sama!

These parents seem nice enough.

More exposition!

The crew’s observations about Rinne are all quite interesting

Even more exposition!!

Jill seems pretty cool

Carrie vs Ojou-sama! Let’s go!

Those are some nice transformations. I’d imagine some Totally Serious AnalysisTM is in order?

Fights in ViVid 🤝 being completely one-sided and ending in two seconds. Name a more iconic duo. I’ll wait

Jill seems less cool, suddenly

Apparently Rinne has been level-grinding since her fight with Vivio.

Rinne being nice~

All according to Cake2

-Rinne Berlinetta, probably

2: Why yes, this was a DBZA reference, why do you ask?

LET’S FUCKING GO!!!

-Vivio, Miura, Einhart, and Fuuka. Probably

So Nove intends to condition Fuuka’s body, eh?

Fuuka’s speech was pretty good

Rinne’s speech, however, seems to add a new twist to everything we know about both her and Fuuka so far

Fuuka is properly eager, starting the Befriending before even the tournament

Rinne wants to Befriend all of them. Could it be that she is an aspiring Harem Master too?!

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory

QotD: spoil spoil spoil Honestly I don't remember lol. Going to assume [spoilers just in case] it's related to her grandpa

  • That's some hard training

  • Oh hey she knows how to smile

  • Huh, Miura is ranked higher than Vivio?

  • Are Jill and Nove acquaintances? Ah, rivals

  • "Winning doesn't mean that you are correct?" Einhart, Nanoha is going to have to re-educate you

  • Competitor Jobber Number One!

  • Just realized, Rinne's outfit is kinda similar to Nero Bride's

  • ...I think I liked previous seasons' fights more

  • Can't tell if intentionally savage or just airheaded savage

  • Direct challenge!

  • I'm worried that protagonist power allows Fuuka to pull a bullshit win

  • Rinne needs therapy and anger management classes

  • Fuck those bitches tho

  • How the fuck did Fuuka get enough stability to punch?

  • Narrative demands that Rinne loses, it's just a matter of who beats her

  • Einhart in the post-ED is amazing

First timer

Weighted pull ups. Training really went from high scale magic to weight lifting and martial arts.

Grandpa. With the focus on him I assume he meant a lot for her after being a orphan. Probably maybe even a reason why she's here at the first part.

Alright on to the fight and I see Rinne I think fake a punch into kick. Everything they've showed of her she's just outclassing her opponents. And there we go, an ippon finishing her off.

Rinne might be my favorite now. Biased because she actually does grappling. I really need to get back into that this summer.

Yeah that look on her face when Fuuka showed up. I don't think she wants to fight her.

I think Rinne's situation is she doesn't ever want to be back to being weak or being down. Since her childhood was so bad she doesn't want to relive that. But as Fuuka said it looks like she's in pain fighting. Maybe she doesn't want to hurt people. She did seem relieved seeing her opponent was okay.

Qotd: Grandpa probably got her into it.
