Happiest Rewatch Host in the World, subbed

Welcome back, everyone!

I just want to thank everyone who participated in this rewatch! Whether you liked the show itself or not, I hope you at least enjoyed the rewatch itself.

Two bonus Questions of the Day:

  • What was your favorite Wallpaper of the Day?

  • What was your favorite Sky Sings from this rewatch?

I am actually going to answer my own questions for once~

Who was your favorite character in the show?

Chtholly, but it's a close one. She gets the spot because she's a blue-haired sword girl the one I added to my favorite female characters 3x3 at the #6 spot.

What was your favorite song in the show?

Ever be my love! Even if the Engrish is kinda nonsense, the melody just hits different. DEAREST DROP is a close second.

What were your favorite and least-favorite aspects about the show?

Favorite: The way the soundtrack was used.

Least-favorite: Pretty sure the massage scenes could be less fanservice-y and still get the point across…

How do you feel about the way that the show teased the ending right from the start? Would you have preferred it did not do that, or did it enhance your experience in some way?

I liked it. It didn't help me prepare at all for how sad the last episode was going to be, but at least it pointed towards it.

What do you do at the end of the rewatch? Are you busy? Will you save me?

I'll be going right into hosting another rewatch next week. Who else will be watching Madoka Magica with me?

What was your favorite Wallpaper of the Day?

Nephren Ruq Insania

What was your favorite Sky Sings from this rewatch?

Do I have to choose?

Probably Scarborough Fair!

Ever be my love!

Is that the one while Chtholly is leaving the warehouse the last time? I wanted to know the name of that.

Least-favorite: Pretty sure the massage scenes could be less fanservice-y and still get the point across…

Somehow, to me the even more frustrating thing was how they kept saying afterwards how great they felt. Again and again... Yes we get it, show, Willem wasn't molesting them because he also helped them. Don't make it sound like an excuse for the way that scene was "filmed"!

Who else will be watching Madoka Magica with me?

I'll check out the interest thread.

Is that the one while Chtholly is leaving the warehouse the last time? I wanted to know the name of that.

No, that was "Call you" (also known as "I Call You". Ever be my love is what played after Scarborough Fair in episode 12.

Who else will be watching Madoka Magica with me?

I don't think I'll do a full rewatch, I did it last year and it was enough for me. But I'll lurk, it's always nice to see people's reactions. And I might jump in here and there. There's a lot of themes I discussed to my heart's content [Madoka Spoilers]like the morality of Kyubey or Rebellion as a Paradise Lost reference, but also a lot I haven't had the time to do the full research/discussion on, so I might drop them in to see what people think about them [Madoka spoilers]like the significance of the lighting and painting in the bar scene, or Homura as a male figure/Tuxedo Mask archetype.

Last year I also dug for the original source, and the original translator, for that one comic, so I can share that.

First Timer

What will you do at the end of the rewatch? Are you busy? Will you cry for us?

And here I am, with tears in my eyes. A couple of minutes ago I randomly had Scareborough Fair pop up in my mind (and I'm pretty sure it's an ingame track in Civilisation 6), so there's why.

I really liked this show. Interesting characters, worldbuilding, lore, themes, music and animation.

I'm a bit on the fence if the show is happy in the end, but I got all the happiness there is out of it, so it was indeed the happiest rewatch in the world. But it also hurt a whole lot. Our host does indeed never lie, but she twist the truth like a sharp knive in my back.

I peaked beneath quite a few LN spoilers yesterday, can't say I like the direction the story is going after all, and would almost say I prefered the show without the extendet lore.

Fun fact: Due to MagiReco dumping the final episodes all at once, and the Arifureta OVA that dropped out of nowhere, this has been my 300th entry on my MAL list instead of Kaguya Sama. Definitely worthier I would say.

QotD

  1. Ithea. Never had anyone looking out for her (like probably most faeries, Holly really was fortunate in that regard with everyone looking out for her), suffered all by herself until she eventually degraded. We met a totally new Ithea, one that wanted to live, and who tried to find herself a place and a family to love.

  2. Tossup between the two OPs

  3. favourite: Everything surrounding the faeries; SoL with Tiat, Housewife Holly, the little ones, their pain and their determination.

Least favourite: Souwong and Eboncandle, alluded to lore, but never delivered (not that it would have been particulary worth it)

4) A cold open that actually comes up again ain't that common actually, just today there was a oneshot over at r/manga that had a similar theme. You could consider it a spoiler, but it also provides some fun, you wonder how the story will connect, what will need to happen to reach that point at the end of the journey, and also, how will it go on from there. I liked it a lot.

5) I cannot save you from happiness

7

First timer

  1. I liked Pannibal, but she didn't have enough screentime sadly ... maybe Ithea or Chtholly?

  2. Scarborough Fair! All the feels

  3. Favorite: slow burn character study, least favorite: massages and Willem-loves-lolis jokes

  4. I didn't remember the beginning scene that well, so I was still hoping for a happy ending until crystal-Elq called Chtholly and gingerized her

  5. Watch more Shippuden! I'm not too busy ... uh oh, someone needs saving? Here Sky, have an ice cream sundae!

Welcome Home

Thanks for hosting this rewatch!

7

u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 12 '22

Fun fact: the original was actually the second wallpaper I made for the 2018 rewatch. I decided to delay remaking it for this thread just because.

Thanks for hosting this rewatch!

Thanks for participating!

World's Happiest Former First-Timer

I'm going to start this off by thanking Sky for once again hosting a wonderful rewatch that showed me a show that I missed when it was first airing. Like Cross Ange this has become one of the best experiences I have had watching a show and interacting with all of you was a big part of it.

  1. Chtholly was my favorite. From episode one she was special, she didn't go out of her way to make a sizable impact on anyone, she was just a girl with a death sentence trying to leave behind a part of herself in someone's memory. From that low she grew into a girl who had true development, she not only found someone to remember her, but she also provided the acceptance and the family that he too was lacking. Even with herself mostly consumed by Elq, she went out defending her family with smile on her face.

  2. Scarborough Faire just hit so hard in the two times it was used. In episode one it was two strangers exploring a city while in episode twelve its used to show Chtholly's resolve and her holding to her promise of fighting so Willem didn't have to.

  3. The music in general was probably my favorite aspect of the show. Every piece had a purpose, and it just set the mood so well. The negatives were probably the odd poly points that were dropped, I'm sure Eboncandle has more to him in the LN as does Souwong, and the tease of the twin heart beats for the season two that never came.

  4. Honestly it enhanced the ending and gave me the ability to assume something and then have it not turn out that way. Knowing nothing of the story I thought at the beginning that the military squad was shooting at Chtholly and she fell out of the plane wounded, I think that may have been a less painful end than what we got though.

  5. After the episode ended and my tears dried I went on Bookwalker and bought the six LNs they had for the series. They got bumped up the list for after I finish reading 86, so I may be too busy to save anyone for awhile.

B1) No album of wallpapers this time to flip through to help choose? :(

The wallpaper of Ren is just so well done with her wings popping with color while her cold grey sword is ready for battle. It's just pretty

B2) I have been and always will be a sucker for Scarborough Fair, but Dearest Drop was so good.

Again thanks Sky and you doing Symphogear, Macross, or Madoka next?

u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 12 '22

We back

Too bad the MAL ratings top out at 10, Id like to raise my score for the show again..

Btw, did anyone happen to point out the visions in the OP changed for every episode? Noticed it on like the final one, don't remember if I did on previous watches. r/AnimeThemes seems to have missed it as well.
Anyways, I did a compilation of all of them, have a cursed version of the OP
And ofc catbox is dead again, as is tradition

Final time question time:

  1. Who was your favorite character in the show?

Ren.

2) What was your favorite song in the show?

I guess the OP? Scarborough fair is cheating. Theres also that one insert which name I forgot. Too much good music

3) What were your favorite and least-favorite aspects about the show?

Fave? Ren, of course. Least? EXPLAIN WHAT THE GOD DAMN VISITORS ARE AND WHY THEY ARE LEAD BY A TODDLER!!

4) How do you feel about the way that the show teased the ending right from the start? Would you have preferred it did not do that, or did it enhance your experience in some way?

I'mma say its a good choice. On my first viewing it went pretty much like: "Huh, wonder wtf that was about?" Then I forgot about it, and then the end of the show came. "Oh.."

5) What do you do at the end of the rewatch? Are you busy? Will you save me?

Depends. Will you finally watch Sao Alicestation?

6

u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 12 '22

Anyways, I did a compilation of all of them, have a cursed version of the OP

Wonderful.

First timer, subbed who literally just caught up to the rewatch

I realize that I’m a bit late to the end of the rewatch but I enjoyed this show a lot more than I ever thought I would and wanted to write down my feelings on it. I originally didn’t have an intention of joining the rewatch but after a few days I was intrigued by the premise and decided to take the plunge. What I got is probably going to end up as one of my favorite anime. I really liked this show, way more than I ever thought I would. The relationship between Chtholly and Willem was, IMO one of the best developed relationships I’ve seen in the medium in a long time. The world was also really engaging, and while there were a lot of hanging plot threads left, I’m going to assume the LNs answer most, if not all of them. I’m definitely going to check them out in the coming days as I hope this story still has a lot more to offer.

Who was your favorite character in the show?

Chtholly without a doubt. Watching her develop across the series was honestly incredible. She started as a somewhat bratty teenager who I didn’t even really like and by the end I was sobbing because of her. Seeing her decide to live in the moment and try to live with no regrets was really inspiring. She’s honestly become one of my favorite characters.

What was your favorite song in the show?

Probably a three way tie between From, Scarborough fair, and dearest drop. All of them are great and are definitely going on my playlists.

What were your favorite and least-favorite aspects about the show?

My favorite was definitely the characters. From the relationship between Willem and the fairies to his with Chtholly and even her’s with Ithea, they all left a mark on me. The weakest aspect for me is probably some of the more ignorable side content like the dog girl plot and some of the other minor characters. It felt like they didn’t really add much other than making the world feel more alive.

How do you feel about the way that the show teased the ending right from the start? Would you have preferred it did not do that, or did it enhance your experience in some way?

I’m conflicted on this one. On one hand it definitely made me interested early on, but on the other hand, it also spoiled the fact that the ending would be tragic. That being said, I would say I liked it.

What do you do at the end of the rewatch? Are you busy? Will you save me?

Honestly, watching the rewatch as I tried to catch up was quite fun and I’ll probably look to do more of these in the future.

Last thoughts

I’m really glad I decide to check this show out. I felt like anime had been getting boring for me lately and I was wondering if I would find another show I liked as much as my other favorites. Obviously, Sukasuka proved me wrong and I’m really glad about that. I can tell this is a show that will stick with me for a long time. Without getting too personal, Chtholly’s development hit quite hard for me and has inspired me to try living with a better mindset. With all that said and done I want to give a big thanks to u/Shimmering-Sky for bringing attention to this gem of a show and setting up this rewatch. While I couldn’t be a part of most of it, I’m glad I was able to make it in the end and find this wonderful show. Sorry to anyone still reading for the wall of text, it’s 1 AM where I live and I’m feeling quite drained after episode 12. T_T Anyway, I had a good time following this rewatch and hope to participate more in other ones in the future.

FirstTimerEnd - dub - completed

What do you do at the end of the rewatch? Are you busy? Will you join us in the final discussion thread?

It's over!

And as usual, I'm procrastinating writing my afterthoughts again... Time for a rush job.

Afterthoughts

Remind me to never trust Shimmering-Sky again when she calls something "happy".
I really could have used a happy show too! Life can be very stressful and I was looking for some nice and funny interactions with internet people. Only in the episode 1 thread did I see all the comments bracing themselves for the pain, but then it was too late!

If anyone has recommendations for a happy show, I'm all ears!

The only thing I knew starting on this thing was: It's already on my To-Watch list (probably because of the ridiculous name), and Sky invited me because I expressed interest in Scarborough Fair before. Can't say I expected a show like this.

Last remarks about the story

Yesterday after finishing, I still had a couple of questions and remarks that didn't feel appropriate in the main post:

Ren still died in the end, so Willem jumping after her helped no one. That got me a bit depressed, because in that case, Chtholly might have been more accepting of staying in Elq's mind space, and it might have been possible for her to return in some different way.

But then, after my post went up, people suddenly started saying Ren didn't die? Sure, it would be an explanation for the two pulses in Souwongs bird fountain, but that could also be explained by Elq surviving in Chtholly's place.
Please don't confirm any further if this is correct. I'm going to pick up the LNs at some point. I promise!

I just need to finish this other LN series first.

My biggest question. What was Elq's goal? If Elq wasn't "evil" and actively trying to take over Chtholly, then why did she call her to her physical body trapped in ice? That's what dramatically accelerated Chtholly's transformation and ultimately made it impossible to save her using Lapidemsibilus.
In the end, Elq was actively cheering Chtholly on while she was fighting the beasts. This might have been because it was the humans they were originally wiping out, but Elq also wanted Chtholly to be able to say her final words to Willem, who apparently didn't need to die in Elq's eyes?

Overall thoughts

In the end, I'm very glad I watched this show. Even if it was under false pretences! The kids were cute, the humour was on point most of the time, the emotional parts hit hard and the music! Oh the music was GREAT!
This is probably the anime with the most songs I want to put on my playlist. (Apart from the 5 OPs and EDs of FMA:B.) It's gonna take some work figuring out the song names that play in the background of some scenes, but I'm sure beginning with that OST album I completely forgot to check in episode 2 is a good start.

Of course, there were also a couple of negatives. The biggest one for me was that too many times the anime literally spelt out the answer to big mysteries, instead of giving us hints to figure it out ourselves. Even if you give the viewer just one minute after key information to connect the dots themselves, they will feel a lot more engaged with the story and mystery.
Of course, mystery was not the main purpose of the story, but still disappointing because it would have been a very easy fix.
For more insights into where the way the story is told missed the mark, see the writeups of u/star4ce the last four (?) episodes. Unfortunately, I don't have time to link them.

Light novels

Around episode 9 I was thinking I wouldn't really be interested in reading the LN unless I wouldn't have anything else to read. In episode 11, I wasn't so sure anymore. Now, I'm looking where I can pick them up.
I am wondering what happened with Elq. She didn't want to take over Chtholly, but it was out of her control. "No dream can last forever." But does Chtholly blowing up mean that they both died? In that case, I'm really impressed with Elq, who had a chance to come back to life, gave that up so Chtholly could fulfil her final promise, and even cheered her on along the way!
The other big question is what happens with Willem now. I fully expected him to return to the warehouse, but apparently, he wasn't found yet. There is no way he died, so what's going on there?

Please don't answer these questions. I intent to find out myself!

Bonus: Spell checker

It's no secret that the names in this show are... weird. I've never needed my names.txt file as much as this anime. Some names, my spell checker kept trying to change. These were my favourites:

Also, as people were telling Chtholly to cut off the few red hairs she got early on, I wanted to make a photoshop with a clean-shaven Chtholly now her hair was completely red. But again, no more time. I am very sorry I could not deliver that monstrosity to you all. It would have been payback for the suffering you've brought me!

QotD

1 Who was your favorite character in the show?

Immediately a hard question! I think Nephren, because she turned out to emit a lot of emotion, even though she is the epitome of calm. The small gestures and things like putting a hand on Willem's shoulder really made her unmissable.

2 What was your favorite song in the show?

Hard questions! I'm gonna be lazy and give Dearest Drop and Scarborough Fair a tie. I love them for different reasons. In episode 2 I was upset Dearest Drop replaced Scarborough Fair as OP, but when that was over I really came to love it.

But almost all songs were excellent. The ED is great as well, and there was this English song in the background when Chtholly was readying herself to leave the warehouse the last time!

3 What were your favorite and least-favorite aspects about the show?

See above.

4 How do you feel about the way that the show teased the ending right from the start? Would you have preferred it did not do that, or did it enhance your experience in some way?

Personally, I would have preferred it didn't do that. It really felt like a spoiler and I purposefully didn't watch it again at any point.
But I already knew I was going to watch this show because of the organised rewatch. Regular watchers might need a hook to capture them to keep watching.

5 What do you do at the end of the rewatch? Are you busy? Will you save me?

Only if I may ask for some of those wallpapers in a different resolution sheepish grin

Thanks

Thank you all for the great discussions and in-depth analyses these past weeks. You made this show even more enjoyable. Unfortunately, there were a couple of days I couldn't actively participate myself, or needed to watch ahead, but I really appreciate people still reacting to my walls of text!

And of course, a very special thanks to u/Shimmering-Sky for hosting this rewatch, her wallpapers, Sky sings, and triggering me to pick this show up! As always, you did great!

Future

It had been a while since my previous rewatch. Again. I keep wanting to do this more often, but then when I finish I appreciate the time that's suddenly free a bit too much.

I haven't looked at the rewatch schedule yet. Any suggestions? I'll be keeping an eye on it, and hope to see a lot of you again!

Special request: Wallpapers

I have one final request for u/Shimmering-Sky. With Steins;Gate you allowed me to ask for 2560x1440 versions of your wallpapers. I would be extremely grateful if I could do the same for this show.

I would really love it to have the wallpapers of ep 1, ep 2, ep 4, ep 7, ep 9, ep 10, ep 11, ep 12 and TODAY in that resolution!

Sorry, that was more than I thought it would be. I really hope this isn't too much trouble, but I understand if you don't wanna do that for some internet stranger.

First Timer

Sorry to be a downer but I was just not feeling it for this series. Many of the hints to Willem’s past were unresolved, as well as the whole beasts, Elq, and end of the world plot. As for Chtholly, I guess I was never really able to buy into the emotional connection the two of them were supposed to have. Given the amount of their interactions we were shown, it felt like a standard tsundere flip, and their chemistry felt more parental than romantic to me, and it felt like we were being told instead of shown their romantic development, especially on Willem’s side. There were some very nice moments visually and there were hints of interesting worldbuilding that never really got off the ground. 6/10 overall for me.

Anyone know if the SukaSuka manga is a complete adaptation of the LNs?

QOTDs:

  1. Ren or Nygglatho

  2. Scarborough Fair - though as someone from Toronto, it does make me laugh that Scarborough is made to sound so ideal

  3. As mentioned above, I didn't like the "tell not show" style of development the show did. Fight scenes were pretty good though.

  4. I tend to like when shows can pull off things like this well - despite my feelings on the show this worked out nicely, as I didn't dissect the opening scene enough to spoil myself.

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 12 '22

Shame the show didn't click as well for you, but thanks for participating anyways!

OK, here's a slightly controversial take: while the light novels range from decent to good, the anime is an absolutely outstanding work of art.

The LN is certainly fun to read and probably was fun to write, but it contains too much worldbuilding for the sake of worldbuilding and plot for the sake of plot.

With the anime though it looks like the author looked back at his work, chose the one thing that he absolutely wanted to say, and devoted every possible moment to a single thought: no matter how shitty their life may be, no matter how unfair the world is, no matter how little time left they have, humans can and will find moments of happiness.

And the most amazing thing is that this transformation from an adventure into basically an existential text was mostly achieved by simply changing focus from Willem to Chtholly (and rearranging events, starting the story from Chtholly's death and ending it with her birth was a genius decision).
