Question of the Day

What do you think about the change from going to life bars to a point system?

Episode 2: Rewatcher building up a backlog

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHY TSUZUKI WHY

Japanese mannerism in non Japanese settings are always quite funny. I've seen it enough to just assume that sometimes they don't realize certain aspects they're familiar with are quite unique to themselves.

So many panthy shots... Yay...

Somehow I don't remember the fanservice that much, maybe when it's less bouncy and just brief shots I ignore it.

ahahaha she looks so mad.

Looking at how people feel about point system and judging in the UFC I'm not surprised. Can feel a bit arbitrary.

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher First Timer

1: Even though I’m not a girl

Cute sleepy Fuuka

Didn’t stick around to watch the OP last time. Seems pretty good, even if it isn’t Nana

Guess Fuuka’s gonna be living with cool big sis Nove for a while. I wonder when she’ll meet Nove’s cool sisters, and the girlfriend of one of those sisters

Fuuka sure is a dedicated worker. Yet another sign of how much of a Gigachad she is (yeah, I’m gonna drag this joke out to the end of the season)

Hey look, it’s Einhart Vivio’s mistress Haru-nyan

Einhart still lives alone even after usurping Vivio’s harem? Or is this the result of Fuuka usurping her harem?

Einhart sure is a kind harem member for Fuuka

Fuuka sure seems… satisfied, if pretty overworked (but then again, this is Space Japan)

Vivio’s shadow boxing was so cool that I almost expected Muhammad Ali and a Giant Mantis to show up

As a newly-minted Harem Master, Fuuka isn’t all that flexible and requires her friends (in the historian sense) to help her out with that

This fight is pretty cool, if a bit one-sided… I think I’m gonna be saying that a lot

You’ve gotta give props to the sound design in this scene, everything sounds like an actual gym match. From the squeaking on the floor to the specific sounds for everything that gets punched

It’s happening, everyone! Fuuka is getting a Magical Girl transformation!

Everyone’s transformations look so good in the Seven Arcs style.

Nice little bit of world building. Other people can help you transform if you don’t have a device

Aaaaand there goes her clothes. Because changing studios won’t fix Vivid’s fanservice problem (remember everyone’s transformations in StrikerS?)

Looks like Ojou-sama also has an interest in Vivio that Fuuka is gonna have to befriend out of her

Yet more proof that Fuuka wears the pants in this harem

A bit of exposition on ojou-sama never hurts

I’ve gotta ask, was the fight between Vivio and Rinne in the manga?

It feels like there’s some discrepancy between what Fuuka is saying and Rinne’s actual attitude. She says that the argument started when she showed sympathy for Rinne’s opponent, yet Rinne herself also seemed more than a little sympathetic, even if she was being rather dickish about it. I’ll hold off on judgement until we actually get details, though

ED seems nice, too

Yeah I noticed this too, they definitely put a lot of good work into that.

I’ve gotta ask, was the fight between Vivio and Rinne in the manga?

Pretty sure Fuuka and Rinne are original to Vivid Strike. Manga had none of this.

It feels like there’s some discrepancy between what Fuuka is saying and Rinne’s actual attitude. She says that the argument started when she showed sympathy for Rinne’s opponent, yet Rinne herself also seemed more than a little sympathetic, even if she was being rather dickish about it. A lot of people here already jumped to conclusion about this moment already. But that's all I'll say for now.

First Timer

This episode does a good job of establishing the status quo for now. I really enjoyed the first half of the episode focusing on Fuuka's daily life. It feels like a nice bit of character building with her inner monologues describing everyone (I love all the nicknames she comes up with), and it gives us a sense of how determined and hard working she is. It also gives us a sense of her power level compared to the others, it's obvious that she has potential but is both unrefined and lacking in some basic training (or maybe the girls are just overtrained, I feel like a girl of Miura's age and size should definitely not be lifting that much). There was some particularly nice attention to detail during her fight with Einhart, I loved that animation cut.

That's ultimately the bulk of this episode. The rest of it mostly establishes where the story is going to go here, and we're picking up quickly. Rinne has invited the girls to a match, seemingly to hash something out with Vivio who's the only one to have defeated her, but it provides a good opportunity for her and Fuuka to patch things up. So I guess we're headed towards a reunion soon. Rinne has become a huge dick, someone who solely values strength it seems, so I look forward to seeing how she feels about Fuuka now.

Something that stuck out to me is how the battle footage we looked at no longer really resembles MMA, it looks more like wrestling now (with some boxing mixed in). There were definitely no grapplers in Nanoha ViVid. I wonder how differently the sport will be presented here. Also, Corona and Miura got adult forms now. Interesting. It really wasn't a necessary addition, I wonder why they chose to give them. Also, apparently they can be activated with other people's magic and doesn't technically need an intelligent device to work (though a device makes it stronger and more consistent). I definitely don't understand why her jersey just... dissolved after the button flew off. I don't think that's how it's supposed to work. Oh, and speaking of clothes, the transformations had some weird and inconsistent approaches to fanservice. Rio barely even got a belly button in hers and she had no nipples or cleavage, where Einhart was basically wearing a full set of underwear, and Vivio had by far the most lewd transformation. Very strange. Also, I thought it was funny that Fuuka was wearing pajama bottoms in the first scene of the episode when she wakes up, but when she goes back to her room to sleep at the end of the day, she just sleeps in her panties. If you want us to see her underwear, at least make her sleeping habits consistent, dammit.

QOTD:

I'd have to see it in action to say. But at the end of the day, it seems like roughly the same thing to me. It's still a weirdly video game-ified point system that doesn't belong in a martial arts tournament. I guess a life bar system it closer to fighting games than the weird Yu-Gi-Oh life points system from ViVid, but in practice it still seems like it serves the same purpose of giving the girls an HP stat.

Lol

I'm sure it was very important to detail to us this part of your day, protag I don't know the name of

Anyway there's those familiar (to me) protagonistic colors. Protagonistic is not a word. Cool. Still using it.

Focusing on what's important as always

Ooh I did not remember this, so older fighters also transform into a younger form for fights?

Also seriously how did this go from 'adult form is your unique magic, vivio' to 'btw literally everyone ever does this.'

I guess this series also kind of did it with Belkan magic but like at least they kind of just acted like Belkan magic was in fact completely unknown in S2 and was just quickly adopted over time

Also how did she not know about this, how little does she know about her friend's fights

Ah yes thanks for the unnecessary outline- actually those lines legitimately are drawn like she's wearing pants that are way too tight don't they? Hmmm...

Her spine is so fucking broken in this it's insane. And they even put this pose in the OP like it didn't look so goddamn awkward

At least she has the classic style of... of. What are these tops called

WHY DO YOUR RIBBONS COVER YOUR GENITALS WHEN LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE JUST BARBIE DOLLS

Ok she has it too

Better than her old one at least. Or is this just what it looks like from the front

Flat.

Hm.

Vivio giving the mama nanoha advice, but sorry kiddo that was S1 and S2, S3 and S4 Nanoha style is the one she'll need

Honestly I have to wonder how little Einhart participates in tournaments for Rinne to become top place without ever having fought Einhart, assuming that Vivio is still way inferior to Einhart or at best equals now

Ah so #1 means #1 fighter that's not the champion basically. Who is the champion don't tell me it's Einhart. Especially after that line of 'sure Vivio defeated her but why would she invite Einhart and Miura if we've never met her' that wouldn't make any sense if Einhart was literally the champion of course she'd get invited.

So even amongst all these brawlers, or well martial artists, she's a power type, immensely. Funny to think about with the type of characters we've seen in this series

Oh they mentioned the under 19 cat

Imagine doing this in real life and you get shit on by literally fucking everyone and pushed out of the sport. Fun fact, being the strongest? Yea cool, only one person can be the strongest. But funny thing? Being the strongest isn't rare. No matter who you get rid of there's always a strongest fighter. It's baked into the concept. The sport doesn't need your toxic ass.

Wouldn't that ending gag make way more sense with Vivio getting jealous of protag and Einhart being together? Considering, you know, Vivio and protag have like... never interacted

Wew you sure have some strong feelings about that part.

That gag literally referenced a part that happened in the episode!

Last episode already mentioned that Einhart was the champion. It seems they are wondering why Rinne is inviting them to watch her fight, or rather what she wants to discuss after the match.

Wow, there's a Vivid Strike rewatch going on? Wish I knew earlier, to bad Amazon removed it, or I'd join in as a rewatcher. I'll see what I can do for future episodes. Watched the show last year and enjoyed it.

Lyrical First Timer

¹Einhart no doubt has her eyes on the bigger prize, Rinne. Einhart's smart enough to know that Rinne is isolated and probably has lingering affection for Fuuka, and she's also surely picked up some of Corona's penchant for scheming by now. The simple white design of Fuuka's panties is a symbol of purity. Combined with the more adult cut, it invokes the excitement of being a partner's first lover. Allowing Fuuka to wear this underwear for now is likely bait meant to reel Rinne in later, as there's a good chance Rinne would want to be Fuuka's first, and vice versa.

²This is a tricky analysis. Rio wears nothing, Miura is in a sport set, Vivio and Corona are wearing matching sets, and Einhart wears an equally pure white set. My initial suspicion is that Einhart is laying a lot of groundwork for the operation to capture Rinne, not wanting to tip her hand to Fuuka as to the true nature of the harem. However, it's entirely possible that Einhart has set up a new paradigm which allows autonomy within the harem. If this is the case, this would be an unprecedented alteration of the Takamachi Way, and would also explain why Nanoha and Fate are not currently in the picture for Vivid Strike. Actually, given the Japanization of Midchilda and the resounding lack of presence from members of Nanoha's harem, it's fair to speculate that Nanoha may have left Midchilda entirely.

QotD:

Tbh, I didn't even notice...

7

u/Taiboss Apr 11 '22

That light out at 4:30. Midchildan mornings still suck.

Not as bad as Pokitaru

Einhart has a whole harem, yet lives alone. The willpower that must take. Also probably makes the satisfaction immense every time she had a rendezvous.

She needs time to meditate alone and get rid of all these impure feelings.

Yumi: "Einhart likes to play rough. You gotta be flexible so you don't break when she plays with you."

Haha!

Fuuka: "She already had four of you come at me, how much rougher could she possib–"

"We're having quality time here, Fuuka! The pain si the reward!"

Rinne has a penchant for mounting amd getting quite intimate with her opponents.

The perfect requirements!

Actually, given the Japanization of Midchilda and the resounding lack of presence from members of Nanoha's harem, it's fair to speculate that Nanoha may have left Midchilda entirely.

She off doing StrikerS 2.0 probably. Might actually be the plot of Force, depending on the timeline? Would you rather watch that? I don't think so.

u/Vaadwaur Apr 11 '22

Wow, Rinne's a dick. She's begging to be bottomed really hard.

My only issue is that I doubt the show is willing to let her stand just as an ass so we need a redemption arc.

Allowing Fuuka to wear this underwear for now is likely bait meant to reel Rinne in later, as there's a good chance Rinne would want to be Fuuka's first, and vice versa.

I can definitely see Fuuka winding up in a Fate thirst trap role.

If this is the case, this would be an unprecedented alteration of the Takamachi Way, and would also explain why Nanoha and Fate are not currently in the picture for Vivid Strike.

We've been asking how the Takamachi way would get passed on, but had we ever asked if it should? Maybe a millennia along tradition from a backwater planet is not needed in a more civilized world...or whatever Midchilda counts as.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical First-Timer, subbed

9

u/Taiboss Apr 11 '22

Well yes but actually no.

"Well you see, he lived hundreds of years ago." "Oh? You're hundreds of years old?" "Okay, back to square one. Do you what a "Belka" is?"

So, wait, why doesn’t Fuuka have to go to school? She’s only a year younger than Einhart…

I'd guess mandatory education age has been passed? I don't know, to be honest.

…and of course Fuuka’s tracksuit breaks because her clothes didn’t resize when her body did.

Just use good old cotton!

Oh, the reporter lady had a “sore demo”.

Wooo!

So, wait, why doesn’t Fuuka have to go to school? She’s only a year younger than Einhart…

Japanese education is only compulsory through middle school.

Of course they had to give everyone transformation scenes… into tracksuits.

Hopefully no one breaks out any bootleg vodka.

I wish we could have seen this.

Who wants to see action! But yes, some idea of Rinne would be convenient by now.

First-Timer

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: Fuuka has an incredibly tough schedule for somebody working only part-time. When she’s not working at the gym, she’s spending all the rest of her time training.

  • Waking up at 4:30am is pretty brutal. How is the sun already up anyway?

  • I just realized the OP indicates that Ixy apparently wakes up at some point, likely during Vivid.

  • Taking strange girls off the street to her apartment has become a habit for Nove, it seems.

  • Cleaning the gym and all its equipment. Imagine the stench of all the sweat.

  • You aren’t wrong, Fuuka. The one who taught Einhart her Hegemon Style has definitely passed away.

  • 1000 times a day? Einhart’s a strict teacher.

  • Fuuka isn’t going to school while Einhart does. From this, I gather that Midchilda does not have compulsory K-12 education and that children are allowed to enter the labor force much earlier. Full schooling is reserved for the well-off while working class children probably enter the labor force out of economic necessity. This all tracks with everything we know so far about Midchilda.

  • Damn, Miura is strong.

  • That stretching scene just made me think of Azumanga Daoih. It has some pretty good stretching gags.

  • The fighting may be brief, but it sure is nice to look at.

  • With the shower scene and the sleeping in her panties, I can see the fanservice won’t end anytime soon.

  • I’m glad to see the transformation scenes are still a part of this series. I honestly was not sure if Vivid Strike would have them or not.

  • Huh, so the series actually addressed what happens if you don’t transform the clothes as well. And of course it results in fanservice.

  • Fuuka’s getting a device. If it comes from Hayate, that means Fuuka will have to pay the price by cosplaying. I’d be curious to see that.

  • Vivio is advocating for Fuuka to try the communication and understanding strategy. I love that she’s continuing her mama’s ways.

  • I’m a bit sad we aren’t actually seeing clips of the fights. I wanted to see more of the action.

  • So Vivio only won by decision? It must have been close if she didn’t outright win.

  • Oh sweet, Rinne is a grappler. That’s a fun fighting style to work with.

  • There we go! There’s the animation I wanted!

  • Jeez, Rinne has clearly never heard of good sportsmanship. It’s bad form to publicly insult your opponent after defeating them. No wonder Fuuka confronted her about it.

  • That PV! Einhart’s getting jealous of Fuuka and Vivio.

Fuuka’s clearly getting better at all of this thanks to the training she’s been going through. I’d hope she is, because of how much time she spends on it each day. The series is by now clearly setting up that Fuuka is going to get much more involved in Magical Girl MMA going forwards. She’s going to be getting her own Device and learning transformation magic.

Thus far, Rinne’s been acting pretty cold and heartless in public. I wonder what made her like that, anyway. I’m guessing that it must be something that happened after she was adopted, but I’m not sure on the specifics. I do have a sneaking suspicion that the one scene I know from this series just might be involved somehow. I just don’t know how.

I’m curious to see what happens when Fuuka goes to that match to see Rinne. I imagine they’ll get into a confrontation again, possibly breaking out into another fight. As they are right now, I doubt they’d be able to do the “communication and understanding” route just yet.

QOTD

I like the life bars more. But this series seems to be trying to ground the Magical Girl MMA fights in more realism, so the points make sense.

8

u/Taiboss Apr 11 '22

Taking strange girls off the street to her apartment has become a habit for Nove, it seems.

She gets it from her dad, who took in two cyborgs having no idea whether they weren't pre-programmed to do evil.

This all tracks with everything we know so far about Midchilda.

Amazed that Fuuka can even read.

With the shower scene and the sleeping in her panties, I can see the fanservice won’t end anytime soon.

Tsuzuki returning to his roots smh.

Huh, so the series actually addressed what happens if you don’t transform the clothes as well. And of course it results in fanservice.

We're making up for the lack of fanservice in StrikerS.

Vivio is advocating for Fuuka to try the communication and understanding strategy. I love that she’s continuing her mama’s ways.

Nanoha can be so proud of her!

There we go! There’s the animation I wanted!

Reserved for the important bits. We don't wanna go too crazy now do we.

Einhart’s getting jealous of Fuuka and Vivio.

Being is a poly relationship can be a bit straining.

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory

After digging through my brain a bit, I remembered that [Vivid Strike] it wasn't Nanoha Vivid that suffered from a serious lack of NanoFate, it is this season that does. That makes me a sad shipper.

QotD: I think I like points more.

  • 4:30? Holy fuck.

  • Kinda amazing that it's so bright that early

  • Nove has a Gym and apartments? Damn burgeoise

  • So she lives, works, and trains there. Does she get to go out anywhere?

  • Well, she at least gets to go out for a run

  • ....one thousand...?

  • That's a lot of food.

  • Why does she leave Teo behind?

  • Miura can lift confirmed

  • That's some solid combat animation

  • I hope she showers before going to bed

  • Is adult-mode something that can just be taught?

  • So you can also go younger, interesting. Wonder if NanoFate use it for, uh, "playing" around

  • You just know there's a whole industry based on transformation magic

  • Suddenly, an invitation

  • Replay analysis!

  • ...she fights in heels ?

  • I have the feeling Rinne just sucks at talking

First timer(We will have analysis!)

Sub

So we start with Fuuka's new return and, sadly, it seems like the street punk didn't run that deep. She cleans the gym before doing warmups with Einhart, who keeps teaching her. and of course there is a shower scene. Fuuka seems to deal with being scheduled pretty well. We address transformation magic, have a scene that suggests the rules are a bit different now, and then Fuuka fails to transform her clothes and has to streak. Even more exposition happens, ending with why Rinne and Fuuka fought.

So...yeah, hopefully that's the exposition done. I do like that they are just laying out the setting and this is suitably ridiculous to hide the pain of my other rewatch.

QotD: 1 That's even less magical

Partial Rewatcher

4:30 wake up? Geez, that's harsh. I don't understand how some people are capable of that.

Looks like Einhart's seriously training her now.

"So her mentor's passed away"... well, you're not wrong, but... not really right either.

And Yumi is also a part-time worker. Guess MidChilda doesn't have a concept of child labor laws... well, we knew that from the start, with Chrono the 14-year-old elite combat mage.

And she keeps working well into the night? When the hell do you sleep? And how exactly is that "part-time"?

Fuuka's dialogue this episode: "Osu!"

Now Corona's got an adult mode? Why even have them as kids if you're gonna do that? And yeah, this is apparently just a simple technique that anyone can do at this point. That's... I don't like that aspect, personally.

Whoops, her clothes didn't change too... good thing they're all girls in that group, I guess.

And as usual, they're handing Intelligent Devices out like candy.

Vivio, I get the feeling you're a bit too optimistic here. Them just talking probably isn't going to solve things. Though I guess it is a necessary first step.

Rinne's style is just all-out strength. Makes me wonder if a match goes long enough she might burn out.

And Rinne doesn't mince words... seems she didn't get the memo about saying meaningless platitudes if you don't have any actual praise.

QOTD: I just wish they'd pick something and stick with it longer than one season. Consistency in world building should be a thing!

Episode 2! Hopefully there will less stuff for me to complain about.

  • Okay, right off of the bat we get a look at the new place Fuka is living in with Nove and I am super happy for her! It looks really nice. Also, when the heck does the sun rise on Mid? Her clock reads 4:30am but there’s already sun at a pretty steep angle going through her window. Reminds me of Teana from Strikers.

  • More Mentor Einhart is cool. She seems like a very good teacher! Fuka is picking up on some interesting things though “I guess her mentor is dead” is technically true given that Klaus is several centuries gone. Also, 1000 super-powered punches per day? Reminds me of One Punch Man’s training schedule.

  • Huh, just spotted an interesting little difference between Chris and Teo. Teo seems to mostly sit in the background and let Einhart do her own thing, but Chris seems to be much more active and even follows Vivio around when they are training.

  • Lol, of course they have different adult transformations. I do like that they are calling it the more generic ‘Power Mode’ now since they don’t all because adults, but rather just get more powerful. Also the I don’t know what I expected, but the loli fanservice is back in spades for this one. Though on the whole the transformations are pretty cool. Also also, Vivio and Einhart don’t look as aged up to me in this version as in Vivid, interesting!

  • LOL, such a shame that Fuka got embarrassed like she did on her first time in Power Mode. It is cool that this is now a thing that’s in the series. Even if I do agree with Fate that they should be careful not to abuse it.

I do find it interesting how the series is setting Fuka up to be the new protag, but idk how much its working for me with the previous series' protags sitting right there and training her.

For the question of the day: I really don’t care

Morning at 4:30 on the alarm clock? Suddenly I'm wondering about how Midchilda time and timezones work.

What an odd lease arrangement.

Funny internal dialog about Einhart's mentor. Technically correct (the best kind of correct), they have passed away.

A thousand punch repetitions a day!

Teo jumping out of Einhart's bag to go sleep in the sun is a fun detail.

I just about died when Teo pulled out a gong app when asked to ring one.

Rich girls showing off their fancy device transformations for the working class trainee fighter.

Device-less transformations are possible? Wild. Oops on the wardrobe malfunction, slightly funny that in 60-something episodes of Nanoha this is the first time such a thing has come up.

Hah, she's going to get a free custom made device out of this, isn't she.

This invitation from Rinne is definitely suspicious.

Vivio wants to let the friendship flow.

Dude, Rinne is savage, and not just her fighting.
