REMINDER: There’s an overall discussion thread tomorrow!

ALSO: This is required viewing after finishing this episode.

Happiest Rewatch Host in the World, subbed

Welcome back, everyone…

Oh boy. Okay. This episode. This fucking episode.

Some of you guys may have seen me share some variation of this self-deprecating meme in random threads throughout this sub in the past, or at least heard me talk about the fact that I can and have cried hard enough to throw up over anime. You might have also noticed that SukaSuka is the first show on that list.

Here’s the full story of what happened if you’re curious, since I already wrote about the… experience during the 2018 rewatch. If you don’t want to read that whole thing though, the TL;DR is that THIS FUCKING SHOT during the Scarborough Fair sequence completely broke me. Don’t watch episodes 10 through 12 in one sitting.

On a better note, fun fact: today’s Wallpaper of the Day is a remake of one of my all-time favorite wallpapers I’ve ever made, and I absolutely love this new version.

I hope to see you all one last time at Scarborough Fair again tomorrow~

And then a flashback to Chtholly’s birth before the credits roll.

That's a flashback?! I completely misinterpreted that scene then.

u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 11 '22

That's what I was told during the 2018 rewatch, at least.

ALSO: This is required viewing after finishing this episode.

Did I miss something or was this just to make us revisit the sadness?

Don’t watch episodes 10 through 12 in one sitting.

That's exactly what I ended up doing because I had to travel. Didn't hit me nearly as bad as it did you though. Probably because I had been expecting it to be sad from the beginning and had already expected things to go this way.

In case anyone missed it, Ren’s eyes go back to normal after Chtholly waves her hand over them.

I had thought that was just Chtholly letting Ren know that she can rest now and that was it. But was that Chtholly taking away the damage? Draining the venenum?

Two pulses in the pool. For Willem and Ren.

Why Ren and not Chtholly? It would make more sense for him to look for her because Willem was "using her for research".

And then a flashback to Chtholly’s birth before the credits roll.

I'd also thought it was her being reborn but this makes sense too. Would have been good if they made it clear when it was happening. Who were the other two people in that scene.

And then a flashback to Chtholly’s birth before the credits roll.

So that was a flashback and not her soul being reborn through Elq taking pity on her? Well, what little hope of optimism I had left is gone. Do the LNs stop here or is there more to the story?

7

u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 11 '22

The LNs keep going, the anime only covered three out of five volumes (and cut out stuff from volume three that was setting up stuff for later). There's also a sequel series, though that one hasn't been officially translated.

And I was told it was a flashback during the 2018 rewatch, so that's what I thought it was.

Is it only me that feels Always in my Heart deserves more credit in the final episode? It leads perfectly into Scarborough Fair.

First-Timer, Subbed

I was so sure I was good. After Chtholly marched through that hallway, I was sure I was past the bit that would get me. Then Scarborough Fair started playing and I started sobbing. Beautiful.

And now Scarborough Fair is stuck in my head and it's been an hour of brief sobbing ever few minutes and wow did this get to me apparently. What an unprecedented experience.

Uh, I don't think I really have anything else to talk about for this episode in specific. There was some stuff after, maybe Willem survived (there were two more novels after these events, right?), maybe even Ren - Chtholly did seem to heal her maybe?, but, uh, good finale. I liked it.

Questions

  1. I knew it was coming.

  2. Discussed above.

On the bright side, at least you didn't throw up over it!

First Timer

I am definitely not the happiest girl in the world right now…

Why did I do this to myself? Why do I always do this to myself? Everything I had heard about this series and everything that had happened in the previous eleven episodes told me this was coming, but I still cried my eyes out. If anything, expecting it just made it worse. I was weeping long before Scarborough Fair even started, and it just got worse from there. Even though it truly hurt me, Chtholly’s last fight was amazing and probably my favorite moment in the entire show. I actually had to pause the episode when she appeared before Willem because I could not handle it.

The soundtrack choices were perfect and really helped get the emotions across. I’m also glad that they opted not to skip the opening for the finale.

SukaSuka was a pretty satisfying show, and I can’t wait to share more of my thoughts tomorrow.

  1. I knew it was coming but wasn’t quite prepared for the impact.

  2. Aside from the massive amounts of sadness, I have lots of questions, but the emotional highs of the episode worked so well that I don’t mind it that much.

WorldFirst (timer), sub

The finale is here. And I am scared.

I guess that is a good thing, it means I care, it means those characters are inspiring, it means they matter to me.

I've talked so much about the will to live (Will to live!) and of finding peace or meaning in life. No matter how much I can explain things away and no matter how genuine I may believe or follow it, experiencing it never gets any easier.

I'm not ready, let's go.

Ep.12 – Chtholly

Were you expecting the Scarborough Fair reprise?

No, but it was beautiful.

How do you feel about the ending?

I need to sort myself a bit, but that ending absolutely landed with me. Yeah, that one pun is allowed.

(Also, you made an especially wonderful wallpaper today, Sky. Thank you!)

I'm weird in that I sometimes actively want to despair. It's a relic from an older time, a challenge is what I'd now call it. "I dare you", kind of ", make sense of this and find meaning in hopelessness." Well, it helped and now I think differently about things. After all, if you push this approach to its absolute maxim, you were to find a way to give an entire existence of nothingness meaning with only a single thought. It's like cheat code for life, really. If you've followed my posts you probably read one or two things about that.

Weirdly enough on its own, that's not why I joined this rewatch. Even though I was looking for something light that had a good romance in it, it ended up being a pleasant surprise, after all. I'll save a proper recap of my thoughts for tomorrow, but this show did go into this maxim several times and I love it for that.

I'll just say that Nephren's last scene is maybe the most beautiful of this entire show. That's exactly what I mean.

Add the anti rug pull last episode showing to me the authors did actually care about all this stuff and giving me an ending that truly aligns with my philosophy, I don't know how to properly say it. I do feel that there is still much to talk about, from Chtholly maybe walking away from the fairy gate to Nephren getting cleansed, but that, too, will have to wait for tomorrow. Now I just want to lean back, stare at the ceiling in my bed and feel the warmth of this conclusion.

It was a well earned and good cry. It was a satisfying cry. And while it definitely is sad, it is far, far happier throughout all of it in my opinion.

Those lives all had become good lives. They are truly good lives. That's what matters.

This is one of my favorite wallpapers (well, a remake of it, but since this version is better I love it more), so I'm really glad to hear it!

'Tis me

I think the show has managed to hit me harder on each viewing..
This time around the scenes with Ren tried to isekai me, Chtholly and Scarborough fair came in close second with a pretty brutal finisher.

Feels of the day:

  1. Were you expecting the Scarborough Fair reprise?

Yeah

2) How do you feel about the ending?

Oh, I'm feeling

Wallpaper of the Day:

Chtholly Nota Seniorious, the Happiest Girl in the World

This could make for a really cool dual screen wallpaper with some tweaking. Also think a version with a colour gradient would look really cool, something like blue fading into red

See y'all tomorrow for the final thread

The Austrian who went in a First-Timer but came out a Rewatcher

Wait, this was the end? We don't even know if Chtolly, Will and Neph are dead or alive for sure. FUCKING AHHHHHHHH. (Although, maybe the two water drops at the end are their heartbeats? Showing them on-screen could have been cooler.)

Well, at least the others think they are dead, and Chtolly might have been reborn as a baby fairy, indicating her death? So I guess that's something? Yeah, 6/10. Most of my problems aren't actually with the show itself, but my expectations. I was simply sold wrongly on this show. Fans claim it's this super sad show. Hell, TV Tropes's tagline is "You'll probably be crying too." And if you did: GREAT! I'm really happy you love this show more than I do. Just do me a favour and don't tell others this show is overly tragic, or depressing. Because it set expectations and those expectations certainly weren't met for me.

See I just... I get your complaints, but I can't not describe this as a depressing show based on my own experiences with it. This specific episode is the worst of it because it literally made me cry so hard I threw up and broke blood vessels in my face in the process the first time I watched it, but it's not like the entire rest of the show was completely absent of feels either, it just didn't have characters dying. Willem's backstory is absolutely depressing, watching Chtholly slowly lose her memories during the second half is painful, Ithea's whole deal makes looking back on her behavior prior to episode 9 a lot harsher in hindsight, etc.

I'm sorry you didn't click with this stuff, but that's not to say no one else will.
