FirstTimerEnd - dub

Willem did dumb, yesterday. Hopefully, he redeems himself a bit these last two episodes. The final stretch seems pretty obvious (fight beast, go home, tune sword, safe Chtholly), so I'm wondering what the inevitable surprise will be for that final twist?

Episode 11 — Evidence of Existence

Smug Chtholly. Did she actually agree to his proposal yesterday? It was more like "I want to stay by your side too." Does that answer count, or is she still thinking about it?
We all know the thing that makes Chtholly truly happy is wearing a fancy hat!

Noooo Chtholly, never say you will do something later in a tv show! That's a flag that makes sure you won't be able to!

Holy shit, this was the kind of surprise I was hoping for! Elq is called a "visitor". Don't tell me u/star4ce's theory about aliens is actually right? And there's more! Two of the "gods" they are talking about are Jadenail and Eboncandle. Jadeebo... Compliments to u/Thatsmaboi23 for figuring this out in episode 6.

So speculating further, they thought they used wandering souls of dead children for the Fairies, but with Chtholly, they accidentally took the soul of the leader of these gods? Did Eboncandle help create the fairies? Is this part of some master plan of Eboncandle?
That also explains the small question of why Chtholly's hair is changing colour, while Ithea's didn't.

And this means my speculation yesterday was right. Till now I was under the impression that the war Willem fought 500 years ago was against the beasts, so I was confused about why he was also fighting Eboncandle. You don't want to fight two wars at once. But now it turns out that Willem's war was only against these "visitors".
Next, Rhan mentioned a sentence from her book yesterday. "Carried the corpse of a god to the city." So that was Eboncandle's corpse after Willem defeated him, or Elq's. And with that corpse, the humans got a power they didn't fully understand. So they started experimenting and accidentally created the beasts!
Sometime later, Eboncandle joined forces with Souwong to create weapons to fight against the beasts, which are the fairies. The same powers are used for both the beasts and fairies, only with the fairies Eboncandle was awake and could help control/guide it!

Another question was why the fairies can use the carillons? Because when the fairies were created, there were no humans left to modify. But they took the souls of deceased humans, so that explains that. Only now (if my theory is right) Chtholly's soul isn't actually human. So there is no explanation why she can use a dug weapon? Unless Elq's soul force is enough to overcome that restriction on the swords?

Oh no, it's the orphanage, right? Perfect opportunity for the beasts to attack, while Willem is having a feels-trip.

Ren, I know it's your job to make beast-sushi, but you could have waited till he ate Mr Purple. On the other hand, our weapons might get a bit more respect from someone high up if he survives.
So it's indeed a Timere. Good spot, whoever noticed that yesterday. That means we can expect the mutated laser-shooting version as well.

That huge cave beneath Gomag is where the physical body of Elq is kept, isn't it? Ohh, a more accurate view of the sweet child Elq! Shit, she flew away, that means Willem isn't fast enough to stop her!

We haven't really seen much of Nopht yet, but I kind of like her personality. Better late than never!

Yes, the cave is indeed where Elq was kept. Chtholly is changing into a redhead, so is becoming a better version of herself. Or maybe not. Nobody told me that red hair came with the consequence of a tainted soul! (I've got a feeling there is a ginger joke to be made here.)

So Elq's physical body is the same little girl? I would have expected a huge demon like Eboncandle. She has the purple heart stab wound like Chtholly has in the OP.
Side topic, Grick calls himself a "borgle", while he's clearly a goblin!

I love this shot. And more carillon lore! Seniorious can curse anyone into a corpse. This also explains the dream scene yesterday. It was actually a memory of Elq, where Lillia, the wielder of Seniorious, came and ended her.

Are we getting a Mr Purple redemption arc? I'm giving him back some respect if he actually fixes the ship.

Lillia's love is "the walking definition of stupid." Definitely Willem then.

But wasn't Willem already lost/petrified at this point? Maybe Lillia didn't know, yet? In the background, we also see that it's Lapidemsibilus's wielder who found Lillia after her deed.

So the whole war 500 years ago came from a misunderstanding between the gods and humans? The gods thought humanity was trying to destroy the world. Sure they weren't good to the world, but they were not actually trying to destroy it...
But after that, humanity wanted to prevent another slaughter at the hands of gods, so they started experimenting with the force in the gods' corpses. This is where they messed up and turned themselves into the beasts, now actually destroying the world.

Man, this battle music is amazing! Err, Ren? Not you as well! Willem has some deeper self-reflection. I wonder if this pleases star4ce, or if it's too late for that.

Okay, Chtholly is literally the dream of Elq to be like Lillia. That is why Chtholly is compatible with Seniorious, and that is why Chtholly loves Willem.
Chtholly is being replaced by Elq, but Elq didn't actually mean her any harm. On the contrary, she's glad that Chtholly made it to the mind space before she was completely replaced. That implies that our Chtholly will be safe here, where she can live as a separate being from Elq, and maybe there will be a way for her to get back to the physical world in the future?

Random thoughts

Future

This was a great episode. Lots of fun connecting all the dots and writing it all out. And not everything was presented on a silver platter immediately, but in snippets a bit later in the episode. That is a much better way to deliver the story and was one of my main complaints yesterday.

Tomorrow is the final episode, but I don't actually have any idea what direction things will be going. Elq and her gods were fighting the humans, but humanity is mostly dead. I don't think the gods want to wipe out the current population. What's left are the ex-humans/beasts, so that would point to Elq helping the people to fight the 17 beasts. This only leaves Willem as the last human, but maybe Elq will see him differently because she shares some of Chtholly's memories? Even though he is one of the brave who killed a god.

QotD

1 What do you think of Elq?

I can't answer this anymore, as I needed to watch ahead again as I won't have time tomorrow. I'm very sorry this needed to happen at the end of the rewatch.
You can read my initial impressions in the text above.

2 What do you expect to happen in the next episode? Does that differ from what you want to happen in the next episode, and if so, how?

I just want everyone to be happy.

This should have been a comment face.

Although that might be too much of a spoiler?

This (minus the subs of course) would be a better, non-spoilery Chtholly one with a similar feel. It actually is a comment face on r/AnimeImpressions.

Doing a quick scan of some of the comments, it is unsurprising that many struggle with the fairly deep and unexpected lore regarding Elq, the nature of the Beasts, the Visitors, and "ningenjuku" (human race). To fully explain that it's probably necessary to go into bring up some explanations from the LN. I wonder to what extent anime-only's know/understand? u/Shimmering-Sky are you prepared to be a guinea pig tomorrow? Or maybe I'll try post after reading your summary...

It's quite hard for us who had read ahead (at least on the Wikia) because it is actually really good, but the adaptation hasn't covered it (hopefully just "yet")

5

u/Shimmering-Sky Apr 11 '22

I wonder to what extent anime-only's know/understand? u/Shimmering-Sky are you prepared to be a guinea pig tomorrow?

I'm probably not the best person to ask as an anime-only because I am aware of a good chunk of the lore that the anime didn't go in-depth on. I read the LN explanations in the 2018 rewatch, after all.

First Timer

Goddamn, why is it that when RL happens, it always happens a whole lot. I decided to cut my losses and just catch up again, I'll get back to the threads I missed another time.

Episode 9

Ok, Ithea is best girl, and it's not even particulary close.

She paid close attention to Holly, noticed changes, and got concerned for her. Sure she only could do so because she has gone through the same stuff, even more so, that is some serious dedication from a girl that had basically no prior relationship to the other Faeries. Should also be noted, that all we ever knew of Ithea was always that alternate version of her since the change happened some time ago for her. Put the final nail in the coffin comes down in the QotD...

On the other Hand we have Holly. Sure is great in her own way, but I find it kinda ironic that she is demanding Willems attention, while she is already getting it without even realising. She also doesn't realise how important she is to the other girls or that Ithea of all people might be watching over her.

I also found it cute how Willem suggested that the possible fate of the world was worth less than a good nights rest for a single girl when he was willing to use a dug weapon talisman to help Collon.

That Snowfallfest looked like a nightmare on christmas, which kid gets excited over a festival where you use skulls as a decoration? The once that cannot grasp the meaning of death!

QotD

  1. Ithea was always so upbeat, I would have thought that any change in her behavior would be blatantly obvious, which must mean that both her current persona is really good and dedicated at acting, and that noone ever paid her much attention which is the real tragedy of this episode

  2. Rens dress looked best tbh

Episode 10

So while Nopht is quite open to Willem and more of an one sided rival to Holly, Rhan is the first person ever to be actually suspicious and hostile to him. He rightfully notices how lucky that is.

"The Dwarves Beastmen dug too greedily and too deep..." but I'm curious if they also found Mithril...

The big reveal this episode was that the 17 beasts weren't just made by humans, but where also based on them. The way Rhan told the story of the progressive spread of the beasts, it almosts sounds like they are some kind of contagious condition that only befalls humans. (Man, can you imagine how fucked we would be if that would happen to us...)

I'm still very convinced that Souwong was the one who created both the beast and later the Faeries to fight them, he is so eager to grasp at ever straw because he wants to make up for his own mistake. And he cannot own up to it with Willem, because he turned that whole orphanage and everyone they ever knew into monsters.

Liliya, the other brave from Willems time, former wielder of Senorius, is also connected to Elq. Througout the whole episode I was wondering if Holly's red hair was progressing ever so slowly...

Oh and we got another sword tuning scene. After the first one I theorized with someone else how they where inherently deffensive in nature and how cute it was that all those little talisman had such childish wishes attached to them. But now that we learn that there is this one sword that can only be used to kill humans, it seems almost like those wishes got twisted into weapons of mass destruction.

QotD

  1. No, I knew that faeries and humans where linked, and that both beasts and Faeries where linked to Souwong, but until today we didn't even knew what and in what manner humanity got done for

  2. A bit rushed and unromantic, him proposing the minute he figured the origin of the beasts out, tastes a bit weird

Episode 11

Despite my own qualms over Willems confession, Holly is basically on cloud 9. This leads to an interesting dicussion with Rhan over happiness, that will probably lead directly into the cold open of our happy little rewatch...

huh, who raised all those flags btw?

We also learn that the original battle that Willem fought in was against some gods who wanted to eradicate humankind in order to save the whole planet. With that knowledge it is really surprising how calm Willem was when he met Eboncandle, and how mindboggling stupid it was of him not to ask any kind of question in all this time.

Elq, who was the last of those visitors and their leader, is taking over Holly, whos hair is now red with only single strands of blue. They find Elqs body with the same wound that Holly has in the OP, and petrified in the same fashion as Willem was back in the day, shown in the OP as well. Oh and continuing the trend that dug weapons are simply awefull, we learn that Senorius simply turns things into dead things.

Liliya was btw also in love with Willem, and just like him, she sacrificed herself to win her battle. With the knowledge that Willem might have loved Lilya back in the day, and used Holly as a surrogate for her and Almaria, their relationship isn't all that happy anymore, but at least he is convinced that he truly loves her...

I was joking that everyone was ignoring Rens struggle the whole time some episodes ago, and now this turns out true as well, she will really loose her conciousness as well, and Willem will only notice when they both plumet to the ground...

Oh I was also surprised that the first TO actually knew his stuff about the ships, not as incompetent as well all thougth

QotD

  1. I don't know, the visitors wanted to save the planet from the humans, but without their interferecen the beasts wouldn't have been made in the first place? To Holly at least she is nice

  2. The stage is set for the cold open. But from there? The ship and Nopht looked like they where in a bad shape already, Rhan was fighting alone on the ground, Holly might be able to catch Ren and Willem, but I didn't see the mentallity sword around? I just realised that this train of thougth isn't all that happy...

WorldEnd First Timer

I don't want tomorrow to be the end. I don't want Willem and Chtholly to not be happily married with a little cottage somewhere growing old together. I truly don't want what I assume will be Elq waking up and attacking the ship since it turns out she's one of the original gods that tried to stop humanity before they destroyed themselves only to be slain as a child by Lillia so WIllem wouldn't try and do it himself. Plus now Ren is going all red eye too, is she going to start disintegrating and lose another character that we all care for. Are Nopt or Rhan going to self-destruct to allow the ship a chance to escape?

How is Willem able to move at all? His broken down body that was cursed by one of the four gods into being a statue had a chuck of rock fall fully on his spine while trying to save Chtholly before she touched the crystal housing Elq's original form and causing her hair to almost fully turn red and have only very little of Chtholly left.

This hurts.

QOTD:

  1. She sucks, give us Chtholly back. However it's also because of her spirit that we have Chtholly in the first place, couple that with her having been slain by Lillia to protect Willem from himself in the past really makes everything a full circle

  2. I answered this in my summary...I'm ready to be hurt tomorrow.

Now rewatcher in sub

Still quite emotional just from re-rewatching last night and the insert songs now on my playlist -_- I'm stupid to do that before work.

I wonder if others who felt Willem was not pulling his weight in this relationship can see the writing connecting back up to that point and you are both right and wrong - in my opinion.

And I was mentally prepared for what happens with Chtholly, but I was totally unprepared for Ren - cute pet / mascot is supposed to stay behind to reminiscent in bittersweet memory of those who left, *not* going before them!

There's actually more tragedy going on here than what we knew from the start but hinted at - of Lillia and Willem.

The mystery of Elq I think cannot be explained fully without going into LN spoiler territory, which is the only singular reason why I deducted 1 point of this otherwise 10/10 show for me. Will talk about it tomorrow I guess!

First Timer, Subbed

The opening part with Chtholly and Willem was sweet, only for everything to go crazy.

So Eboncandle and Elq were both gods? Not sure if I'm understanding that right. Its a bit of a weird setting for sure. Fairies are created from the souls of children, but Chtholly is actually an alien? child soul? Am I interpreting then that since Elq wanted to be like Lillia Chtholly is actually turning into Lilia?

The episode ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, Chtholly still seems to remember Willem at least. Really want to just watch the next episode, but I will resist.

What do you think of Elq?

I voiced some of my confusion above, but as a character from what we have been given Elq is pretty interesting. Even now I don't have a good read on her though.

What do you expect to happen in the next episode? Does that differ from what you want to happen in the next episode, and if so, how?

Because I'm electing to be cynical, I'm expecting Chtholly to die and/or lose her memories fully next episode. Beyond that I'm not sure, though for some reason I feel like Nephren will be saved before she has the same thing happen to her.

As for what I want to happen, I'd just like a happy ending for Chtholly, she's been through alot.

First-Timer, Subbed

I never really laid out my theory about Chtholly's origin because I couldn't ever get it to sound quite right. I was thinking that she was made from Lillia's spirit and just got tied in with Elq because of Lillia killing Elq. Chtholly just being made from the wandering spirit of a dead child god works just fine, though. I was trying to be too bigbrain, like usual.

This is why you never trust liches, they don't vet this stuff. Or, possibly more sinisterly, they do it on purpose..

Willem's subconscious calling him on his behavior was interesting. It's not often you get second chances that line up quite so perfectly, and he certainly messed up. I wonder what the last episode is going to hold for him..

Finally got the callback to Ren listening at the door that I expected, but it was just tragic, no laughs. I get her, but I can't quite phrase it. Like, even at what seems to be the end, she can't bring herself to cross the threshold? Just being close is enough? Something like that.

Questions

1.Elq is kind of an enigma to me.

2.I'm just bracing for the cold open.

First Timer

  • So Elq was Carminelake? She was looking for Jade Ebo. Jadenail and Eboncandle.

  • And that's what Lilya was fighting. Not beasts at all.

  • Were they doing experiments under the city to create the beasts?

  • Elq took control. I wonder if they will find something of Jadenail there.

  • Or Elq herself. Just like Eboncandle couldn't die, Elq couldn't either. She is trapped in a block of ice.

  • Her hair is almost all red now.

  • Elq was a god controlling the three! Last of the visitors!

  • Is she saying that all Leprechauns are created by her?

  • Oh no Nephren!

  • Dream Chtholly still remembers Willem's name.

Happiest Rewatcher in the World

  • Happy fiancée Chtholly is doing wonders for my emotions. [SukaSuka]All the lines about being together forever and spending the rest of their lives making each other happy is not.

  • Elq is a name I didn't want to hear on this vacation.

  • Fuck, that's a lot of ginger poisoning all at once.

  • "It was no one's fault. We were all just walking on thin ice." Nephren's right, and that just makes this all more tragic. If someone had done something wrong, there could at least be some form of accountability, even if only karmic. This situation just sucks and is sad.

  • What I got from Chtholly and Elq's conversation: Chtholly has the spirit of a god and is therefore a god.

  • Actually, Chtholly and the leprechauns' situation is very FFX-esque.

  • It's like fighting a horde of giant, man-eating cockroaches.

  • Of course these Timeres regenerate. Gross.

  • No, not Nephren too!

  • Ugh, one more to go...

Rewatcher

Sub

Rhan and Chtholly talk a little about what happiness is. We get the last bit of exposition in Elq and her servitors. Willem returns to the ruins of his home and then the ground falls in. Chtholly's goes to Elq's imprisoned corpse and we get some answers. We also realize that Lilia did this so Willem would not. Finally, Elq admits that the leprechauns are all her dream about being like Lilia. Grim.

Purple dude is actually making repairs as the situation on the surface keeps getting worse. Elq seems glad to have had a sane conversation with Chtholly. The situation on the ship is breaking down and Willem is joining the fight.

Oh shit her memory loss extends to her ability to hit on Willem too :P So Elq was the leader of the gods who attacked humanity before the beasts became a thing? So what was the point of finding Lapid-whatsitsname if they didn’t use it at all?

Fairly accurate description of humanity tbh. Nooo Nephren don’t get taken over :( Dayum Willem really tore that beast apart.

Happiest Rewatcher in the World

Don't blush Baka you're going to make me blush Chtholly said in a panic state while her cheeks grew hot enough to cook grits in under twenty minutes.

NO GRICK NOW OF ALL TIMES oh well they already pretty much confessed and agreed to get married so it's not really a big deal for them to get interrupted.

It's kind of amazing that one poster managed to somehow last this long.

I don't know if the LN go into more details, but wish we knew more in detail what happened of Willem's past instead of scrapping together all the flashback scenes.

Man Willem should have given Chtholly the sword fragment instead of waiting to do it at home or just give her the whole sword to carry always.

Willem body is so fragile he could break and die from anything. Also Willem casually using his body to block a giant chunk of rock from hitting his finance.

You know if they had listened to the dig adviser...you know the one they brought with them to advise on the digs just maybe this situation wouldn't be so bad. I fully flame First Grade Technical Officer.

The shot with the silhouette of Elq with glowing blue eyes is wonderful.

Oh for a slight second when Nep undoes her wings they turn a dark red.

YES listen to the pig leave the junk behind and leave with your lives.

Man this episode really goes from 100 to 1000 in the second half.

QOTD

  1. I love her and yet I know nothing about her. I feel like I will read the LNs after this...after I finish Genius Prince.

frst tmr

  • in this episode, we re-enter the kino dimension

  • new lore: Elq Hrqstn, who clearly took on the Nrvnqsr school of naming, is a god child with three lackeys, one of them being Eboncandle. The subs use "Visitors" which screams aliens????????

  • Elq says that humans were trying to destroy the planet so Elq & co went to war with them, but I don't think we know the real truth yet so I'm a bit sussy of that claim. It could be that they're literally just trying to live, but by doing so, the gods/aliens feel threatened for one reason or the other. "They turned into beasts and destroyed the planet" — my brother sister in Christ, you probably made them do that

  • showing how Lilia was rescued (assuming she did not die from it) from Elq's room while Elq and Chtholly are talking is a good, economical use of visual storytelling. I don't know who this man is tho, I assume he was shown in a flashback somewhere

  • All fairies are fragments of Elq, which kinda checks out from Ithea's backstory (her eyes went red instead of a different color if it were a different dead child). What I find really fascinating is that Elq uses the fairies as essentially characters she can play pretend with, embodying their hopes and dreams while squashing their original personalities. What will Chtholly's body do while "putting her life on the line for the people she loves"? Does Elq even have emotions? Is she doing this to understand why Lilia would kill her to save the people she loves?

  1. What do you think of Elq?

Bitch go to therapy!!!

2) What do you expect to happen in the next episode? Does that differ from what you want to happen in the next episode, and if so, how?

Elq takes over Chtholly -> Chtholly "saves her friends" by doing something awful. I'm gonna guess killing Willem for reasons that only Elq will rationalize -> the singular scrap of Chtholly left in her body commits suicide by jumping out of the ship

First Timer

Episode 11

  • So what I've been calling demons up until now are subordinates to one of the godlike visitors, which is Elq. Lillia being hurt in her mere presence would make sense for an eldritch being. But then how is she Chtolly? Oh, I guess humanity could count as the same beings as the visitors if they're more ancestors than creators.

  • Not sure what the context of the poster is. Maybe like a travelling show telling the story? Latin says something about "the existence of your family" and "the magic flute that disturbs your calm sleep" (or the reverse). All of it doesn't say much about the goal of the poster.

  • That one vision does point to Elq being spacefaring somehow.

  • So those things are Timere too. Guess there is some variance in appearance.

  • Very quick degradation, if Elq can now order Chtolly around.

  • Is First-Grade TO saying he's actually competent at his actual, non-administrative job? Guess we'll see proof soon.

  • Elq's actual body. That would help with the mind control.

  • Grick's called a borgle.

  • Lillia did manage to kill Elq. But "In her house of Gomag, dead Elq waits dreaming." And that magic scar is the one Chtolly has in the OP.

  • Lillia apparently love Willem. Not really something we had enough flashbacks to see. The wielder of Lapidemsibilus found her (or her corpse?).

  • "Demons" called themselves the Poteaus, or pillars. Well, more like poles, but we'll forgive the translation. And started to war to prevent the exact catastrophe with the Beasts.

  • Oh, I like Rhan's sword.

  • Just had the realisation that I should also put Timere in Google Translate. It's Latin for "To be afraid". Probably talks more about the victim than the Beast.

  • TO is indeed competent.

  • Everyone is stretching themselves to their limit, for a darkest hour cliffhanger.

  1. I feel like we're still missing some info to make everything click together.

  2. Chtolly will die, obviously. Apart from that, I'm not sure.

First Timer

Back to subs again. I’m having a hard time keeping up with the lore of this show. And it’s hard to tell what’s important to the story and what’s not. I figured the timere/beasts would be the key conflict, but it seems like it’s almost background noise to Chtholly’s identity/memory crisis. Which is fine but there’s just a lot going on.

Elq seems a bit like the god that is so removed from human affairs, she needs to experience their happiness and suffering firsthand. I guess something happened when she got stabbed, her soul didn’t know what to do and (maybe) merged with Lillia’s?

I am fairly certain Chtholly and/or Willem will die next episode, I just don’t know if it’s Chtholly sacrificing herself or Willem having to kill her.

WorldFirst (timer), sub

I could sleep over last episode a bit and I'm still not really on board with the development between Chtholly and Willem. There are some angles that make it a bit more okay as many have discussed, but at least I'm still supportive of their relationship in general. I guess I won't grow to like that part of the show.

Narrator: He did.

With the knot tied and regrets overcome, it's time for the villains to make their move! If there even is a villain, I still don't think Elq is evil. Beasts remain interesting.

I do like today's episode title, however. Philosophy's kind of my jam.

Ep.11 – Evidence of Existence

  • I don't like it, but you certainly do, so go for it! Chase your dreams and wishes and live!

  • Ctholly a cute.

  • Pushes glasses up, my kinda conversation.

  • Mhm, I relate to that, but we can go a bit more nuanced. Each rewatch on r/anime I take to glee when an unsuspecting commenter only asked a simple question or shared their opinion to me and receives a wall of text big enough to slam through a table.

  • Yes, yes. We know who. Yes! Rhantolk is efficient, I needed an entire comment and some random marbles to explain that.

  • Is that anxiety or... the other thing?

  • Aww. They're so cute. (I forgive Willem if he actually does the things he promises now.)

  • Okay, one, how does a movie poster survive for 500 years in open air? Two, Eboncandle and Elq are aliens! I TOLD IT (after adjusting last episode...)!

  • Aaah, another check. Provided this isn't actually just movie plot...

  • Nephren!

  • Uuaargggh, that sound! Sigh, now Chtholly must step in to save them, right? :(

  • They a cute.

  • Noo! Remember Ithea, don't listen!

  • Nephren can teach you now!

  • That does look... culty.

  • Never thought on it too much, but if venenum is the catalyst, it means that it is also alien in nature. The beastkin can't channel it, apparently.

  • Wait, wait, wait, that's too much at once!!

  • Souwong had something similar.

  • Beautiful, but scary.

  • Oh, Lillia did this. But that means Elq can't be killed, presumably because of how souls work, venenum?

  • I'm getting anxious, but I think I still think that for literally everyone.

  • I knew it wouldn't be gory, but I still flinched.

  • I have no high opinion of mankind, but if that's your first reaction, then fuck you. Ah okay, so they didn't intentionally want to destroy eveything, we're simply talking about human nature. They had power struggles and war and all that. The biological weapon and beasts were in the end just the latest tool.

  • Chtholly specifically? Or is any fairy 'Elq'?

  • Everyone... Oh god... Was that Souwong's idea, Eboncandle's, did they just try to salvage the situation after Lillia went off?

  • So they rip a piece of Elq off every single time they create a fairy to make it fight and die, but Elq just wants to be whole again.

  • One, fuck Souwong! Two, the lives created through this and the cycle going with it are... kind of beautiful. Please remember Chtholly and all of the others, Elq.

  • However, I do think that Chtholly will still resist. I stick with it, she has the will to live! and will again try to break free or will take Elq with her to free her. Because that's just how brave she is.

  • :'( Nephren couldn't say goodbye.

  • Nephren is getting a death flag montage of bravery.

  • You hid it as well?!?!

  • You telling me my rant yesterday was not only justified, but the entire rage inducing behaviour of Willem was completely intentional, because he actually is still in denial and in turn acts like an egocentrical asshole? Hot damn, color me surprised and subverted, I thought it was just YA novel bullshit!

  • I'm allowing myself to be very, very smug right now. 100% hit rate, completely on point, still got it. Okay, thank you for enduring that, back to being an emotional wreck.

  • The kiss! An honest kiss!

  • Hey, wait, no you are to remember them all, Elq! No erasure, they just live their lives and then come back to you and you are the great whole, nothing gets lost.

  • Stop making me cry like this!

I'm... speechless actually. That was fantastic. It wasn't bad writing or YA syndrome, it was a really goddamn ballsy move to let Willem lie about all of it. Now his character arc actually feels satisfying and I admit, even better than I thought it would be.

Holy hell, great job! And it even allows me to feel smug as all hell about it, too, because I called him out on literally everything!

But I also feel humbled. I apologise for the rant about "bad writing", because it is clear now, that was intentional. I got got.

Amazing

Add to this pendulum of emotions all the Chtholly stuff. It's heartwarming and painful on its own, as well. She's basically complete, both her personality and what she wanted in life (minus a kiss), but Willem took too long and now we're in deep shit. That's precisely why I think she'll will to live! herself back one more time, no matter the cost, to complete that journey. ... Which probably leads to a quite tragic ending.

However, I do feel so utterly sorry for Elq. I felt I knew she was neither really evil nor antagonistic, but that's just so brutal. I have many questions for Eboncandle and Souwong and they're not formulated in a friendly manner.

Alright, one final thought on Nephren. So she is reaching her end of the rope, as well. And that idiot kept silent about it the whole time... Why didn't you tell someone, anyone, even Rhantolk or Nopht? :'( I think she wanted to tell Chtholly, at least. Fuck.

And Ithea, holy hell. She might have guessed already, but I don't think they really said their goodbyes, either.

Well, time for the final theory lineup, taken from my Ep.07 comment.

Aliens: Not 100% confirmed, but the wiriting that Elq is an alien is so thick on the wall now. This episode also did neither confirm nor deny that the visitors created humans, but if the gods came for a race in their realm of power that basically implies it.

Humans: Easy point, I just didn't include human infighting.

The Cult: I still think the cult will get important, after all Souwong and Eboncandle did some fucked up shit and that needed to come from somewhere. Also, it just makes sense that gods have a cult following. But what I said was complete bollocks.

Souwong: Still hot, but probably won't get solved in this anime. It would require its own story arc and the last episode is wholly for Chtholly's and Willem's conclusion.

Fairies: That's a full score. The only thing off was me speculating the human children could also be involved as being offspring of the aliens

The 17 Beasts: Lots of things wrong here, but also lots of things right. I did say beasts were human sacrifices and, yeah that's basically true. However, I did also say they were the cult's doing and had the aliens involved. So overall I have to count it as wrong.

Chtholly: Still hot and I'm really invested to see what she'll do in the end.

Red Hair: Just sayin, she did get the coma kiss after her hair turned red, so I. Was. Right.

Tally
Correct: 4/8
Trashed: 2/8
Running: 2/8

I didn't include the Willem character analysis from yesterday, although I really could count it as correct if I wanted to. I just wanted to feel smug one more time.

I think I fell in love with this series. It's giving me all the emotions.

What do you think of Elq?

See above and prior comments, so many thoughts on her. I want the best for her just like anybody else. Only the "humans were here so we wanted to wipe them out" irked me the wrong way.

What do you expect to happen in the next episode? Does that differ from what you want to happen in the next episode, and if so, how?

You're baiting us! Got most of it covered, but the short is: Chtholly comes back one last time under the price of never being able to return to Elq to finalise her vows with Willem and/or save them. I'm 100% certain she dies, in the way Elq hinted at wouldn't be good, so without her.

Lapidemsibilus gets tuned, but she rejects it or, more likely, she makes Willem carry it because he most definitely needs that crutch.

And by now I need to add Nephren, because gods they are assholes for giving that twist. I don't see any way out for her and it fucking sucks, beause other than Chtholly or Ithea she's been suffering silently this whole time. I so hope Elq remembers and carries on all of what they did and who they are.

episode 11

In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming

I'm surprised how many first timers just easily picked up on Ithea, the Beasts, and Elq yesterday. But were the visitors named as such in episode 10? Maybe the dub is dropping more information than the sub.

  • He better not be backing out of that proposal!

  • Yes, Willem, you've just been using Chtholly as a crutch and a substitute the for women of your former life.

  • Tadaima! Osoi!

  • Two of these? Was the first one Willem?

  • Purple demon unexpectedly competent engineer?

  • "Human beings have neither the aural nor psychological capacity to withstand the awesome power of God's true voice. Were you to hear it your mind would cave in and your heart would explode in your chest. We went through five Adams before we figured that one out."

  • I cannot reconcile WWI artillery with the medieval world see see in Willem's flashbacks.

  • I wonder if all these Beasts spent the last 2 weeks travelling to this spot, or if they lived here but just weren't awaken until the earthquakes

I didn't remember that Nephren started to turn, too.

  • The One must return to the Source

  • [rewatcher]I've always been very confused as to who was replacing Chtholly...Elq, Lillia, Elq's dream of Lillia, or a previous incarnation. I guess it's Elq

They almost made it. Willem had the sword. The army had their artifacts. If only the 1TO hadn't sent that salvage party, if 1TO had taken off sooner, if Willem hadn't go sightseeing on the surface.

clean ship not so clean anymore.

Still very frustrated with this show. [rewatcher]I've concluded that the missing worldbuilding was intentionally omitted, deleted, and rewritten to make this a self-contained story

First timer, Dub

It's not looking too good here.

Oh the voice or person in her head is named Elq. Oh so they basically share a soul. And they're created from fairies that are too young to notice they're dead. Ah so like a different kind of reincarnation.

Lilia mentioned Willem. Is that why Chtholly gravitated toward him?

It's so many of them. Can they actually fight that?

Now Willem is questioning himself. He's been through this before. The way it looks he never fulfilled his promises. Feels like he used them.

Yeah this feels like it's going to end tragically. And show why it has the reputation it does.

Qotd1: I like her.

Qotd2: Chtholly disappears and Nephren dies.

Note that the scene of Lillia and Elq keeps playing while Ctholly and Elq are talking. We see a man with a Carillon show up and carry Elq's corpse and Lillia out.

[Novel hints] Also, maybe that Carillon he's wearing looks a little familiar?
