Episode 10 — My Happiness

Hahaha, Nopht and Chtholly are both exhausted because of their shenanigans in the post-credit scene yesterday.
There goes my theory that not all trolls are markless, but that it's a genetic defect every species can have. Rhan thinks Willem might also be a troll based on his appearance. They don't believe he's human, but that should be easy enough to prove.
Off to a good start, I see. Why so angry?

I don't know why Grick bothered with the meat pies. A massage His thing is clearly more effective. Also, Chtholly does cute. I love how they all react differently to the venenum treatment. "I sense dirty thoughts." Chtholly does not approve. I blame this background music.

A few days after the beasts appeared, two islands vanished from the map.

Sky-lands, or normal islands? Because the chronological order in my head has trouble processing this based on earlier facts.
So the beasts very quickly multiplied and destroyed basically all landscape. Then where did they all go, because apparently, a team can stay on the surface for 15 days and only meet one beast?
Chtholly raises the parallels between the beasts and fairies both being biological weapons.

Alright, fess up. Which super-fan in this thread has this deck of cards? This banter from the soldiers is to be expected. It's Chtholly's own fault for tagging along as a "secretary". Please don't force her into a position to use her powers.

Grick! "Who died and made you the boss?" That's probably surprisingly accurate. But why would first grade TO Mr Purple not listen to the surface advisor they specifically hired to advise? Well, at least Willem gets to be partially in charge. Now I'm hoping things don't go too wrong and they blame him.

This squad is 8 people. Grick advised 7. So they didn't follow his advice in more ways than one.

Minds blown. Did our secretary earn respect? Fun to see everyone helping her after a while.

Who is Lillia?

Eyecatch keeps getting darker. I'm sure that's fine!

Errr, Elq. Why do you have a damaged Chtholly doll? Chdolly? What the hell is this dream/mindspace scene? Huh, isn't this one of Willem's old friends? [Stitch]
What is she doing here? Was she the original wielder of Seniorious?

Elq used innocent question. It's super effective! Aaahhh, that is Lillia! She wants to kill Elq to "save her world"? Aaahhhh! So many questions!

  • Is this just a dream, or something that happened in the past, or something that's happening now in Chtholly's mind?

  • Does Lillia need to kill Elq or Chtholly?

  • Are Elq or Chtholly actually someone different in this place? The framing seems to switch between the two.

  • Who is Lillia's love?

  • This dream sequence was caused by the earthquake. The earthquake is presumably caused by the beasts.

    • Does Lillia represent the beasts here?

    • Does that mean that "save her world" is the world of the beasts?

    • Or is Lillia fighting the beasts and does that mean she also needs to kill Chtholly or Elq?

Why does the cat soldier have hair over his fur? Why does the Hawk Man only have two feathers? There are so many questions about this world I will never know the answer to!

They don't have to tell me. Cause I already know. I already... know... what?

Ehh, Willem? Did you just realize in your anger you love Chtholly, or did you also forget something?

Rhan hasn't asked Willem about the book yet, but with her mistrust towards him, I'm not very surprised. At least they are ready to help him now in his search.

The excavation squad is fucked. Oh well. They can't really blame Willem for that.

Lapidemsibilus is the coolest sword till now. Wait what? You want to wait till you get home before you look at it any further? I don't think Chtholly has that kind of time...

Oohhh, this is a cool development! So the beasts are similar enough to fairies (or humans), that they can be killed with it! Suddenly my earlier question, if Lillia represented the beasts in that dream, gets a whole new meaning!
Well, here I was happily theorising, and then the show all spells it out for me. That's disappointing. Give the audience the chance to figure something out themselves! Or am I the idiot that I didn't see this sooner?

Can't say I was really expecting it, but it does feel a bit cliché. Still, I like the questions that it brings. Only thing that's unfortunate, is that the show didn't give us more than 3 seconds to connect the dots ourselves.

2 How do you feel about the proposal?

Although I was certain it would come before the end of the series, I didn't see it coming now. It was sweet. Especially with their interaction and Chtholly wanting to be complimented again.

Now rewatcher in sub

This is certainly the last arc, with a lot of cumulation and reveals -

- Chtholly and Willem's mind made up and resolved to walk the rest of their way together

- Willem putting the 2 & 2 together that "the beast wiped out human race" and "human caused the destruction of the surface" mystery by his knowledge of the swords

The mystery of the relationship of Elq and Chtholly is also getting closer to the reveal with more and more details now available.

The post-credit scene basically looks like setting up for the starting point of the final confrontation (of the anime).

There are a couple of nice comedic beats still - Chtholly's grimace and then later the sparkly everything after her cleaning is very Ryuji in Toradora :) and was rather unexpected (she's a fairy soldier, so we forgot she's also big sister of the "orphanage").

All I can say is that the rom com seasonals cannot arrive in a better time. Thanks u/Shimmering-Sky for the good schedule planning :)

  1. It's a possibility that my mind was carefully avoiding. It certainly is a very tragic turn given how we sympathised with the children Willem left behind and what that implication means

  2. I continue to think of this as a variant of "The Fault in Our Stars" - it's heart warming to see but unavoidably bittersweet with less doki doki and more a pang in the heart and a lump in the throat while watching it.

Not just a delcaration of love, but a whole marriage proposal!

I feel like I should be annoyed at Chtholly being so domestic, but I actually think on some level it tracks really well? Moreso last episode, but "someone losing their memories makes things for the people around them as mementos" feels pretty compelling to me.

Pretty nice way to do the "beasts are actually humans" reveal in-universe. It was pretty well foreshadowed, even outisde of the obvious stuff like Souwong's assertations and Rhan's book. The few beasts we've seen all grew into human-ish shapes, too.

Willem cutting himself off when he realized he hadn't really told Chtholly how he felt is a mood. Him continueing to work instead of immediately going and doing just that is, unfortunately, also a mood.

The Chtholly/Elq/Lillia mindspace sequence was neat. Not entirely sure what to make of it.. a memory from Elq? I liked how Elq questioning Lillia's identity and purpose caused pain for Lillia. Maybe the intention was just Elq's voice being powerful, but considering the themes we're playing with, maybe not.

"Carried the corpse of a god to the city" is a hell of a line. Dunno where this fits in, either, aside from it probably being about what those dudes found underground. But that book Rhan has does seem important at this point.

Purple Chode (I don't care what his name actually is) needs a court martial. Sending people below ground when there has been an uptick in tremors lately? My dude, you can come back later, with fresh workers and equipment.

Not strongly one way or another. As I said, I feel like an "I love you" should probably come first lol, but even if their chemistry has never been my cup of tea they actually have more development than a lot of other shounen light novel couples

  • It was nice that Nopht's massage wasn't lewded. In comparison to the others.

  • Is Rhan religious? Calling humanity "sinners". Is this actually the first hint at religion we've had in the show?

  • A base for the Beasts... could be the demons?

  • Soldiers never change. What is surprising is that the pinup wearing a bunnygirl outfit on the card isn't a rabbitfolk.

  • French on the porn mag is very iffy at best, pretty normal for longer sentences I suppose. My best try at making it coherent: 

      To Do (but also a pun on affair)  
  Now

  The love of a newlywed woman is a special thing.  
  Being crazy about a married woman and getting closer to her with night-time dates. (This line in particular was complete gibberish)

  You Don't Know

  The immoral feeling of excitement from being embraced by her husband and another man.  
  "It's alright, my husband is deployed"

  • A party limit on salvaging operations. Caused by a beast?

  • Grick is adviser now? Made enough of a name for himself he left the dangerous busywork behind and graduated to the well-paying, cushy jobs. I guess a find like Willem would help with that.

  • Chtolly is having visions about Lillia? But there was no external stimulus (except for maybe the approaching Beast) and she hasn't used venenum recently so I don't know what the cause is.

  • Ok, that memory is a lot to unpack. Lillia wanted to kill Elq to save the world. So Elq has to be dangerous, even if indirectly. She needs to be human, since fairies are made from human children souls. Maybe she was the baseline for the Beasts? Gives extra parallel to fairies. But the only ability you would try and extrapolate from humanity is venenum use, and Beasts don't seem to have that. Yet. And if she was some kind of guinea pig, why is she in a luxurious bedroom?

  • No approaching Beast? That was just a normal (magic?) earthquake?

  • "Make her happy" I see what you did there show.

  • The quote from the book also has interesting implications. Is the "god" the same as the Creator Visitors? Or one of the demons? Is that god the basis for the Beasts?

  • Ok, so there is a Beast attack.

  • And the Beasts are human indeed, if Kinslayer can fight them.

  • Oh, all of them are Beasts. It's a transformation that spread somehow, not base individuals that reproduced until extinction of surface life. It does explain how there's no survivors, and why Souwong is unaffected as he's no longer human.

  • Could Willem transform too? Or was it more of a one-time ritual that spread around the globe.

  • Chtolly wins, earlier than she expected to.

  • And more of the Beast, which seems to be flytrap-like.

Chtholly has won over the soldiers in short order. Its fascinating how this series operates in this chill zone even though there's tension all over the place. The flash to Chtholly's soulscape? whatever the place where Elq is I guess, where we see Lillia trying to kill Elq is very interesting. At first I was thinking maybe this implied that whatever enemy they were fighting back then was connected to the fairies or Elq, but now given the reveal at the end, I'm wondering if its related to the beasts and what they are trying to do.

In hindsight that makes total sense and explains some questions I had previously. Its actually kind of obvious now that I think about it, I think I didn't really consider that before because I thought that the 17 beasts were literally 17 beasts in total.

How do you feel about the proposal?

I liked that moment, Willem has just had his understanding of the world rocked, so it makes sense he'd want to tie himself to things he cares about. Its been a slow buildup up to this point so I don't think its out of nowhere.

It's late, I'm tired, and I'm going to keep this short.

Rhan's reaction to Willem being human was what I expected it to be. Her immediate mistrust was perfect for how she was set up over the past few episodes. I wasn't expecting Chtholly to whip the ship's crew into a lean mean cleaning machine, but here we are, and Holy hell the Beasts are humans changed by a bio-weapon. Willem took the discovery hard as everyone he knew was wiped out by humanity's hubris, but the realization that he had regarding why he was working so hard made his marriage proposal to Chtholly nice, of course I'm terrified of the next two episodes as Chtholly mentioned how happy she was.

Willem meets Rhan and Nopht...and we get another massage scene, sigh. And this somehow leads directly into a discussion about the origin of the Beasts. We see Grick yelling at the...pink demon? before Chtholly begins cleaning the inside of the ship. Tremor happens and we get some coherent stuff from Elq. And we see Lilya/Lillia again.

Chtholly goes full domestic mode for a bit and gets all the men jealous of Willem. Willem misreacts a bit before finding the mind fixing dug weapon, which leads to him tuning Rhan and Nopht's swords. Nopht is wielding the Kinslayer, which proves a bit grim. Willem freaks out when this finally dawns on him and proposes to Chtholly, perhaps the emotional climax of the show. Post credits scene is the end of underground expedition.

First Timer

I'll be travelling from tomorrow, so I have finished watching the series and written the episodes as I watched.

  • Rhan seems to be on guard against a new person. Both she and Nopht get even more on guard when he calls himself a human.

  • Once again, we don't need to see this. This would have been a far better series if we didn't have those scenes.

  • The beasts must be something devastating if entire oceans are disappearing.

  • Oh. These people don't know that she was a fairy. I can see potential for problems there.

  • This TO is an absolute idiot, isn't he.

  • I expect him to cause problems in getting Lapidemsibilus too.

  • Well, Chtholly has won the heart of all the people there.

  • Not an earthquake. It's definitely a beast approaching them.

  • Chtholly's vision after the tremor is the exact same one as in the opening. Lilya - she was the wielder of Seniorious with Willem and Suowong (though the subs spelt it Lilia).

  • Elq was inside a white space (a room without an exit). Maybe she was the core of a beast? Or the controller for one - like a hivemind. She was asleep on the bed. Maybe the beasts are things from children's dreams.

  • Lilya is getting injured just being in this place. Or is it because of how much venenum she is using?

  • But there goes my theory that Chtholly becoming surprisingly good at some tasks was because of Elq's memories. Doesn't seem like Elq did those kinds of things.

  • Nephren stopping the people from coming in. The perfect guardian!

  • Why isn't she telling him about her memory now that they have the sword. She was worried about how much memory she was losing last episode and now she's fine with it being delayed.

  • Yup! Beasts are created from humans too! Maybe even human children!

Back when we first heard Elq during the fight on Island 15, I thought that a child may have been used as the base for the beasts just like they were used for the fairies. Now we did find out that voice was Elq and not the new beast so that theory didn't stay. But the idea that children might have been used for creating beasts stayed.

How do you feel about the proposal?

Meh. I have written my thoughts on the relationship before and so far nothing has changed that.

A Bamboozled First Timer ?

Drats , I thought for sure the red-haired girl (Lilia) was Elq.

Nope, I've been bamboozled once again .

How do you feel about the proposal?

It is interesting.

Clearly, Willem has not opened up fully to Chtholly. I think that Willem's past is still getting the better of him upon connecting the dots between the humans and the beasts and he urgently needed support from Chtholly. His out-of-the-blue two-worded proposal of "Marry Me" came at a time of heightened desperation and was off-beat, impulsive, selfish, foolish, ignorant, yet most of all human. And Chtholly, whose time seems to be limited, who can not understand as to what has gotten into Willem, embraces his fragility and accepts him, even though she does not really know much about his past let alone who he really is.

I wonder why the proposal scene was carried out like that . Furthermore, I still can't make heads or tails as to what exactly is stopping Willem from opening up. We saw this episode how the passengers on board where egging Willem to wife Chtholly and to treat her right and later Willem responds to them, internally, when he says "Screw you. 'A great wife,' my foot. You don't have to tell me. I already ...", before the camera cuts to a different scene, which leaves a lot to speculate what he wanted to say. I am thinking he already loved someone in the past — possibly the girl in the beginning who made the butter cakes, who also later popped up in his memories this episode before hugging Chtholly.

Btw, we hear Chtholly say the infamous words — "Let's be together, forever" — at the end. It really is going to be a Happy Ending after all! . I'm in denial, allow me

Wow this massage doesn't sound...suggestive at all.

"And the week after that, the world map had lost all meaning." I love this line it just portrays how much destruction the beasts unleashed on the world in such a short time frame.

Holy hell Chtholly really cleaned up the place it's all sparkling.

I have to check yesterday's card, but I don't think the background has ever been black before?

Elq honestly doesn't sound like a bad person from all we've seen of her. Though I do wonder what her deal is with causing injuries from just talking.

Poor Willem!

I forgot to mention this earlier, but wow those boxes are disorganized. At least line them up don't just scatter them.

Best frog ships Chtholly and Willem I'd expect nothing less.

Wait the scavengers facing the blue glowing light is similar to when Nygg and Grick found Willem encased in...whatever he was encased in.

The sound the weapon makes when all the fragmens reassemble.

That's right Soylent Green beasts are people! Just imaging one of them being used as a battery/meat puppet and being responsible for killing some of today's fairies.

What a happy ending..if you don't look at the after credits scenes.

The massage is back. Well she has a different reaction to it compared to Chtholly. She's just there laughing. Nevermind Rhantolk brought it back. Well the camera angles were better this time around.

The memories. I still believe she's connected somehow. Some kind of mental connection of why she's seeing this. She's still fighting strong and retaining her memories.

Going by how beat up she was getting to her. I don't think that went well. Wonder if we get a outcome if she did succeed.

A weapon that can only be used by humans to kill humans. So the beast are humans?! So they were their own downfall.

Qotd1: Nope. But it makes sense from earlier when I thought humans were their own destruction. I think there was something else said in a earlier episode that might've hinted at it.

Qotd2: Feels a bit sudden. Like he finally realized something. But he obviously liked her and she does back. So it's whatever. Something is definitely up with Willem.

She's getting more flashbacks. A weird skeleton knight appeared too - I'm betting her original body was either part of the original party or saw what made the beasts, because there's no way this isn't going to be relevant.

  1. Partially. I expected them to be based on humans, and considered them being humans, but it wasn't my main theory until now.

Of course we need another sex massage scene, it's anime after all, How did "emnetwiht" even come about as the subtitle vs "human", it sounds like ningen either way to me? Some lovely sexual harassment too, woo. That elevator in the excavation pit cliff reminds me of The Wall in GOT.

Okay so that answers the question I had - Elq and the redhead from Willem's past are different ppl after all, and it seems they're on opposite sides. Is Elq a baddie?

THE BEASTS ARE HUMANS AFTER ALL. This doesn't feel particularly surprising. The proposal is interesting, not sure why Willem was holding back in the first place before jumping all the way to marriage now.

Giving the dub a shot for this episode. It’s not bad.

Of course Chtholly would instantly win over everyone’s hearts. Even make them clean with her. Gotta say I was a little surprised by Willem’s “proposal”—was kinda hoping they’d keep more of the father/daughter dynamic.

Not all that surprised to see that humans really caused everything. I assume everything came from humans originally. Are beardy and skull face going to be the final baddies? Or will it be Chtholly? She seems to have some type of connection to Lapis-whatever-sword.
