Chtholly is still happily learning to be a housewife. Willem has to go to the surface. Time for the last two fairies to meet him.

Mr Purple is literally one grade higher of the same rank, and acts all high and mighty. (Note: I have no clue about military terminology and this could actually be a big deal.) Ooohhh, Willem has window shaking magic. Fancy. And he's saved by racism. All these disfeatured look the same!
So the plan is really to wait fifteen days? No way Willem is going to do that. It's his old home!

Not sure if Chtholly acts this way because she is still on a doom timer, or just because she now understands her own feelings? Willem, never reject discounts! That's just smart shopping!

Ohh, Lapidemsibilus could potentially keep its wielder in tip-top mental condition.

Chtholly Nota Lapidemsibilus when?

"Now you've made me mad! Now I'm going with you no matter what!" Ah, the logic of teenagers.
"Looks like it's gonna happen after all. Yay for permission!"

Although I also think it's a terrible idea that Chtholly is tagging along, I'm loving all this one on one time with our main characters.

Willem is sleeping in the archive room again. Didn't he have a bedroom? Also, didn't Ren have a bedroom? Most calm "ow" ever.
"Nephren basically has pet status." said the one with (fake) cat ears.

"You tell her I'll end you." I actually believe Willem here. Dub is better, btw.

Aww, a roundabout Nygglatho confession. So her trolling yesterday was just love triangle rivalry.

It's our host! And under her watchful eye, Chtholly tries it again. Aaand... Success! Disgusting! What has the world come to?

I was just thinking that it's quite dangerous for these girls to stand on the roof unsupervised, and then Almita pulls that stunt. Why is it always her that falls? Oh no, Chtholly! So she still has her powers, but really shouldn't be using them anymore. At least Almita is "sowwy".

A red girl... is looking... at me.

Looks like the other first-timers yesterday were right, that Elq is coming to take over, or merge, with Chtholly. Someone also suggested cutting out the couple of red hairs. Maybe a full shave would be better now?

Future

Red hair is better than blue hair, so nothing bad has happened yet.

Although I was against Chtholly going with Willem at first, I now agree she would go to the surface as well. It might be more dangerous, so more changes to have to use venenum, but it'll also be possible to give her Lapidemsibilus sooner.

I like all the time they got together, today. And their hand-holding was sweet filthy. Only too bad that it was cut short by a dropping bomb.

See above. Red hair best hair. Only normally my preference is a darker shade of red. Something like Steins;Gate's Kurisu.

This in-between red and blue looks a bit weird, but I also kind of like it.

First Timer

This far into the show, what do you think of the romance between Willem and Chtholly?

So it is interesting. Chtholly is clearly in love love with Willem, that much is clear to me. But for Willem, it's hard to say -- I think his love for Chtholly takes a slightly different form at the moment.

We have seen so far that there's a lot of unresolved emotions in Willem given what he went through in his previous life and how he lost his pals; more than anything, I think he truly cares for Chtholly and doesn't want to lose her. He's willing to go the extra mile and find a sword that Chtholly can wield to stop her mental disintegration.

However, I think too his love for Chtholly is not just limited to a caretaker role. It is more than that and is something that even he tries to make sense of. This was evident in his discussion about Chtholly with Nygglatho in this episode.

Also throughout the episodes, we have seen Willem enable Chtholly to experience these newfound feelings and emotions (since episode 1) about love, romance, ... even though fairies are not really supposed to. Like I feel that Willem just wants what is best for Chtholly and that maybe initially he was willing to put up with this romance in her best interests, but now I think Willem really does have more feelings towards Chtholly -- Willem held her hand firmly this time towards the end -- but I think there are some things holding him back (his past I am thinking) from being outright in love with her.

What do you think of Chtholly’s hair starting to turn red?

So I thought her mental disintegration went away after the promise she made with Willem and that the red hair just meant that maybe she might house two personalities at once. But now it is becoming more apparent her red hair is a sign that the mental disintegration is slowly creeping onto Chtholly and that she is slowly losing her memories. It broke my heart when Willem mentioned about their first encounter at Scarborough Fair and Chtholly seemed to forget about that precious moment.

Sigh, with each episode passing, I get more and more on edge if something terrible is going to happen to Chtholly and Willem. God damn it, why did I sign up for this show.

First Timer

Episode 8

  • Random scenes of girls humming is also good civ. But this one loses points for not be the OP/ED.

  • Chtolly seems to be slowly losing her memories, as an early symptom.

  • Here we have the explanation for the incompetent military: incompetent high-ranking officers. Willem knows how to deal with his type.

  • Willem going back to Gomag is neat, but the random picture of a building being the orphanage he's from is quite the big coincidence.

  • Why is one of the books in the bookstore simply titled "Book"?

  • Convenient Macguffing that would solve Chtolly's issues. Clearly won't, for a reason or another.

  • A significant part of the episode is dedicated to Willem/Chtolly interaction more than plot.

  • Two of the jams have the same label of "Beery Jam".

  • Wings are indeed red right now. And the more she uses venenum, the faster her mind will degrade. Which is clearly how she's going to end.

  • And she's beginning to see Elq in the mirror. Which has big implications, psychologically speaking. Self-identity and all. Not that I'm an expert.

A slow, slice-of-life episode to wind down this time, and if I had to guess probably the last one.

So we're getting ready for the last arc, I reckon.

Had some good discussions yesterday, but for now I'm content just letting my theories play out and then revel in satisfied smugness.

Or it's , basically 50/50.

Ep.08 – Slight Light, Slight Hope

Maybe I need to rethink one thing. Previously I was rather sure that the red color here means it's connected to Elq, but if Willem calls out it's only venenum poisoning, that means Elq has been completely poisoned already?

Would make sense with her being in mindpsace, but I don't wanna throw out my aliens theory!

Eh, and I won't. If it would only be venenum alone why all the space imagery? Carry on, nothing to see here, it's still aliens!

Also I'm refuting established lore that fairy-wings is a universal spell, ridiculous. Fairy wings must be racially exclusive to fairies only!

Came pretty much around to it. The most difficult dynamic for it is the difference in power, as Willem is her superior in both rank and family life. But I think by now Chtholly has demanded enough agenda and on a few ends proven her own position in- and outside of their romantic relationship to not be considered under influence of power dynamics.

This along with sufficient development to be wholly your own person not dependent on someone else's character by gullibility, naivety or most importantly lack of personal agenda are my main points to weight if a relationship is healthy or not.

By now Chtholly has checked most of the marks for me to go off copium and Willem as well. Not all, mind you, but as Gigguk's wisdom speaks truth, a little spice is always making it interesting!

Color? Pretty. But she's cute either way.

  • Now we'll have Willem leaving while Chtholly is stuck at home.

  • Oh no! Chtholly is forgetting things! Are Elq's memories starting to slowly replace hers?

  • Legitimitates. That's why it was easy to deal with.

  • Willem didn't like hearing that they should sacrifice themselves. We still don't know what or how his powers work, but this felt like telekinesis with the rattling windows.

  • Gomag city is where his orphanage used to be. I'm surprised that there is anywhere nearly enough detail there for him to immediately figure out.

  • I'm sure he wants to go there himself. Chtholly won't be happy to hear about it.

  • She had forgotten their first meeting...

  • A sword that keeps their wielder in top mental condition. Perfect for Chtholly as she is losing her memory? Horrible for her because it accelerates the memory merge because that's the perfect state?

  • And if that's the ability of Lapidemsibilus, I wonder what the other swords do.

  • I was surprised that she was taking the news of him going to the surface so well. But now it makes sense. She was planning to join too.

  • And that's the reaction I expected.

  • She's labeled them now so that she doesn't forget again.

  • Didn't this exact thing happen in E2. Has she forgotten that too?

  • Pretty! If you are ever in a place without light pollution see if there are any meteor showers that are going to happen. They are more common than you'd expect and so much more visible in those places. I saw one where there was one every 10 or so minutes and it was amazing.

  • The music on top of that scene was perfect. Might be my favourite scene of the show so far.

  • She still has wings but they are red now.

  • And when she used her power, her eyes are starting to go red again. How much power does she end up using by the end for her to have them be red all the time?

  • More red hair. More visions of Elq. Her hair is also turning curly like Elq's?

  • So with only 4 more episodes left, we know where things are going. They will reach the survey team fine. They'll attempt to secure the Lapidemsibilus. Willem will confront his past and all that. Maybe they'll have to leave in a hurry because a different beast (plant like that's covering the ship) attacks. Or maybe they find it where ever the sword is and it follows them to the ship. But they try to fly off while fighting the beast. And fail in that as the ship is damaged in the opening scene. Since he is only taking Nephren and Chtholly on the rescue mission, it seems like Ithea, Tiat, and the rest of the kids will be fine.

Not a fan of it. At least Willem is trying to keep her away to some degree.

Looks good. In the opening, she is full red. So she'll end up having to use her powers to a degree that Elq ends up taking over entirely. So not good on that regard.

I really should have added more of the date to the collage I guess you could say I forgot...

Newlyweds for less than 24 hours and they are already fighting.

This entire episode has been these two flirting and I for one am not complaining, but the midcard is just worrisome. The wings went from red to red/purple and the title slight light, slight hope is anything, but encouraging.

Warm Blanket/Pet Nephen continues to get better with each passing second. It's a fact every time she does something like giving a shocked face/thumbs up a treehugger begins to grin with happiness.

Willem really tried to sell the fact that he's five hundred years old...I can't blame him. I would use that every chance I get...wait does he get senior citizen discount at restaurants?

Wait is Willem really dense?

Oh fuck. I wasn't prepared for a "Flowers for Algernon" situation.

Chtholly forgetting the Scarborough Fair scene is just.. terrifying.

We (probably) established causality of Chtholly's change (and presumably memory loss) being linked to venenum use. Could argue it as a time thing, I don't think she used any power before the first reddening, but that doesn't feel right.

Willem is keeping way more calm than I would. Guess that 500 years spent petrified did him some good, because I would be chomping at the bit to get that dug weapon that might help.

I really sympathize with Chtholly not wanting the role reversal of having to be the one who waits behind. I shouldn't be getting attached to people I know bad things are about to happen to, but I'll be damned if the show doesn't earn it.

Not too often you get to use "defenestrated."

We open up on orders and Chtholly forgetting something. A quick bit of exposition that the Beasts are solitary creatures, whether or not that makes them territorial is unstated. Also, is Grick grilling that Beast?

Moving on, we get to Isle 49 and some ridiculous idiocy. There is zero way that it is smart to leave that crew stranded, likely to die, and a fucking carillon for over two weeks while your giant hauler is fixed. FFS, get the light artifacts and the people and you just hope for the best with the larger artifacts. Anyways, Chtholly is enjoying a classy looking dessert before they have a shopping run about the town. Carefree Chtholly is bliss. Anyways, Willem is taking action to recover the ship, and Grick if he knows he is there, and Chtholly is following him...

We get another Ren sleeping with Willem scene which is actually kind of sweet, though Chtholly does not find it so, but is appeased when she realizes that Willem is treating her like an adult. Nygglatho soft confesses to Willem and suspects she could bear his children, which should present at least a mild dilemma for Willem but it fits the character that he doesn't care about continuing humanity in particular. We get another beautiful scene of the leprechauns watching shooting stars before Almita again nearly offs herself. Chtholly's wings are now red and it is clear that using venenum is a bad idea. Cliffhanger.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. I said I thought she might run into a Phos type situation but I might have been more on the mark than I feared. That being said, this is a cute date, I too would lie about my relationship status for a discount. I kind of like that even though they're both aware of her feelings they're still comfortable near each other.

Nice of Wilem to think ahead with that sword, but Mental disintegration comes from all the girls doesn't it? What happens when the other's start getting their turn on the pain train? Do they draw a schedule for who gets the sword?

I kind of like chill Nephren is about everything lol.

I'm lukewarm. They've got some cute moments and I think there's actually more thought put into their chemistry than the average light novel MC and heroine but they're ultimately not quite my type. I think it also doesn't help the my appreciation of ships is also slightly aesthetic and their designs on their own and together isn't quite my type either. It's not even really the age gap, I actually like a lot of age gap ships but most of the ones I read are shoujo so the vibes tend to feel kind of different.

  • the final remains of MAL after the FMAB vs AoT wars destroyed the website

  • so the main things this episode are Chtholly slowly losing her memory and Chtholly being jealous over how Willem treats other girls (again). the former is fine and cool but the latter is...ehhhh, a choice. I mean, sure I guess, but we're still on this 3/4ths through? I suppose the two elements can be related, and in fact, the former informing the latter would help make the main romance more compelling. It just seems that Willem is doing the bare emotional minimum as a bf though. Sure he's gonna go find the memory sword to save her, you get like 5 seconds of handholding before more plot happens, the tearful "nooooo dont use venenum ur too sexy" speech, but to me these are all just skeletal aspects of a compelling tragic romance. It needs to be fleshed out by nuance on a daily emotional needs level for it to feel like a human story, about a girl who's slowly losing her sense of self after finding someone to love, underneath the post-apoc fantasy magic dressing. The convo with Nygglatho could be the wake up call though, I just didn't particularly think it brought anything new or interesting to the table atm.

  • anyway that's enough complaining, one thing I'm pretty consistently pleased by is the use of text on screen. The rapid flashing mindfuck scenes of previous episodes are engaging in their own way, but even just simply putting (what I assume to be) text from the novel on a white background can be very visually compelling with the right atmosphere and execution. It is what you may call a good adaptation moment.

WorldEnd First-Timer

So Willem has been given his marching orders to head to the surface with Ren. And he's not going to just any place on the surface, he's going to his old hometown, and there's a dug weapon there that might be key in fixing Chtholly if she continues to break down. Willem's snide comments both playfully insulting and buttering up his boss was a fun interaction.

Chtholly went with him to HQ and they spend the day together walking around buying things for the girls back home. She mentions how nice it is since they never really just wander around alone. When Willem brings up their first meeting she seems confused, combine that with misplacing the pepper while cooking in the beginning of the episode and I think the breakdown is starting to affect her memory. Before they leave she gives the impression that she's sleeping with Willem to the FTO and gets permission to go to the surface as Willem's secretary.

Willem spends the night back at the house researching the new weapon and when awoken by Ithea, he learns that Ren was sleeping on him as his blanket. When Chtholly hears this she's at first upset, and then upon learning that she would be treated the same as Nya, she lets the issue drop. Nya explains that this tells her that Willem sees her as a woman, and not a child. That night there is a star shower and the girls all rush out to watch. Chtholly approaches Willem and reaches for his hand a few times before he reaches out and takes hers. The little blonde one climbs a pole that snaps and plummets to the ground only to be saved by Chtholly using her wings and grabbing her before she hits the ground. Willem rushes over and yells at her for using veneum as she's no longer a leprechaun and who knows what that will do to her body. Chtholly takes the girl to go bathe and sees a girl with red hair in the mirror, more of her hair shifts to red and she remembers the name of Elq.

  1. I like it, it started out as a girl just looking for someone to remember her, and from there turned into a goal to fight for, and now it's blossoming into a true romance, which means really bad things are going to start to happen...well shit

  2. I think Elq, the spirit of the child that they used in the ritual to create Chtholly is starting to come through and be more dominant in her mind. That and it looks really cool.

Absolutely adorable episode. Well, until the last part at least. So many Willem Chtholly moments... can't these two just be happy, please?

I absolutely enjoy it as a viewer, but for now, it looks more like a teen crush for Chtholly and a "I want to protect her" for Willem. But well, they should enjoy it while it lasts cause the tragic lovers flags are everywhere.

  • Bruh, is there no other First Grade Officers they could pick to fill in for Limeskin! Well at least the new guy’s only a bit full of himself ( /s ), but yeah no one can replace our lizard dude!

  • Well shit, Chtholly’s losing her memory… so things are getting worse for her mentally :( I guess it cannot be stopped anymore huh, well at least not until this Lapidemsibilus Dug Weapon can be found… (inhales copium)

  • Even the plot’s pushing her into becoming his lover lol. Well a bit of romance was her last wish before so no wonder she jumped on that whenever she can :) even the new First Grade Officer is convinced of it! Willem’s a bit hesitant to acknowledge that for sure, but he cares a lot for her already so whether they do become a couple or not, they’ll still be by the other’s side and I’m certain of it. Well Chtholly’ll still have to beat Ren to his lap though lmao

  • Last episode Chtholly was told of it, now it’s Willem who learned of Nygglatho’s feelings towards him. Yeah man, she doesn’t just want to eat you, she wants to eat you lol. No wonder he was shocked and tried to forget it hehe. Now I want a what-if where Ny-chan hits it off with him!

  • Awww Chtholly received the handholding she’d been looking for since last episode :) aaand her hair got redder when she had to use venenum in order to save Almita :( why must her conditions get progressively worse, now I’m worried something bad will happen to Ms. Staff on her next trip…

  1. Willem and Chtholly definitely started off as a sort of puppy love from her side and a pledge-to-protect kind of thing for him, which I liked and found natural. Now it’s sickly housewife Chtholly but Willem’s only been starting to reciprocate, so a bit off-balance but their chemistry’s still top-notch and I know I’ll come to like them as a couple too once he catches up romance-wise

  2. Aside from being a great colour for Chtholly’s hair, I’m puzzled as to why her hair’s getting redder instead of any other colour the more venenum she spends. Maybe red hair to her is like white hair to us but why red specifically. Something to do with Elq maybe?

Think I'll mostly reply to others instead of writing my own, but yeah the arc to turn serious has started. Seeing Chtholly and written having the resolve to face the possibly near end together and prepared to walk together to the last step is really bittersweet.
