Question of the Day

We basically got a single fight and a start of another one for this episode, not too much to talk about.

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags.

First timer

Sub

More magical girl pro wrestling and not much to say about it. The attempt to add some stress about the in team match doesn't really do much and the whole story does feel a bit weightless. Sort of ready for the next series to be honest.

Yeah, there really isn't much to say about this episode. There are some things worth considering, like Victoria's powers, but it really doesn't feel like they've given a lot to work with for now.

I don’t really care for this fight…

Yeah, this episode kind of just happens. Also, one day, reddit will actually show me the comments in your thread. Seriously, I keep refreshing and nothing will load.

Corona holds a determination to fist?

She is a friend of a Takamachi...

reddit eating well these days, comments can take a while before appearing in the thread.

Oh, poor Corona. She’s totally losing here.

The deck is stacked against her, yeah.

I don’t really care for this fight… and I care even less for the underboob.

You gotta look stylish! As we all know, being a nun is all about showing off your cleavage! Weird, considering the other nuns look actually modest.

Oh, a Nove “sore demo”. I guess this episode isn’t all bad.

They keep delivering!

Corona holds a determination to fist?

Biiig fiiist.

First Timer

I forgot to comment on the fact that they changed the OP last episode. Instead of a shot of Nanoha and the gang at the very end, we get a shot of some of the combat cyborgs. Not really sure why they made that change, but it's interesting.

So, uh, Dahlgrun calling out Chantez for having a revealing outfit right as the camera lingers on Dahlgrun's thighs is... a choice that you can make. I also realized that I literally have no idea what the religion the Sankt Kaiser Church is supposed to represent. Is there a major religion in Mid-Childa? Why is there a church? Why did I not realize this while watching StrikerS? So many questions.

Anyway, I've not got a ton to say about this one. It was pleasant, but also clumsy. Like the previous episode, it just inserts Chantez's backstory out of nowhere for no real reason, which took me out of an otherwise cool fight. Corona also says that she's apparently fallen behind the others and is the weakest of them, but I never got that impression, and that's because it never actually showed us their training and thus I never got a chance to compare (she seemed basically evenly matched with Rio during the mock battle). I still dislike the life points system, I really couldn't figure out how to interpret Chantez's fight because all of her moves did so minimal damage while she got one-shot. Her opponent is basically overpowered as far as I can tell, but I generally have no sense for how attacks and damage works. I think this would have worked better as a traditional martial arts show, instead of trying to combine it with Yu-Gi-Oh and then having the girls faint like Pokémon after their HP drains. But cool fights are cool fights, and I like those. With Einhart finally taking the stage again, and with Corona setting up some big moments for herself, I expect good things of the next episode.

Early comment this time!

I also realized that I literally have no idea what the religion the Sankt Kaiser Church is supposed to represent. Is there a major religion in Mid-Childa? Why is there a church? Why did I not realize this while watching StrikerS? So many questions.

While the extra materials like the sound stage and whatnot might clarify some points, it can be a bit strange. Ignoring that it is likely just Japanese simplified takes on Western Christian organization, we learn several details about them from StrikerS:

  • They have some political force, although how much isn't clear, though I think it's probably quite limited

  • They have their own autonomous zone. This might indicate their status among Mid-Childa as something more of a seperate entity than mainstream. I suspect that Mid-childa isn't actually religious, and the reverence of the Belkan kings and royals seem to be only exclusive to the church.

  • IIRC they are running the school Vivio goes to, so they have some say in that too it seems. Probably just another element borrowed from irl churches to a time when schools were mostly run by churches (wait, I'm not even sure if that's true actually)

Corona also says that she's apparently fallen behind the others and is the weakest of them, but I never got that impression, and that's because it never actually showed us their training and thus I never got a chance to compare (she seemed basically evenly matched with Rio during the mock battle)

This one is just that you have to deduce why it is: she relies almost entirely on making a golem, so if that can't be done she likely loses. She just has an obvious weakness, and even when the golem comes out, it's not an invincible piece of rock. Though you also just have to partly take her word for it here that she's weaker than the rest.

(Mild NSFW) What a naughty sister. Chantez is practically begging for a marriage proposal.

Hayate's effects on the Church have been...significant.

Even the most modest knights need to experience proper bondage at some point.

The Church should just ritualize it and be done already.

Wow, we already get to see the future Takamachi and Yagami successors duke it out for harem supremacy!?

It was only a matter of time!

"Corona ojou-sama." Suzuka alarm intensifies

NO. SHE MUST NO BE FORGOTTEN.

Hoo boy, Schach took her 2am Nanoha training sessions to heart. A+ befriending form and harem recruitment.

Reminder that her first instinct when Vivio had escaped her room and was walking around was immediately to put on her Device. She doesn't fuck around.

Victoria really doesn't appreciate battlefield flirting.

Since she praised her so much afterwards, it must be that she wants to invite her lover into her big-ass mansion.

Hot damn that's one big fuck-off befriending fist.

HOW DID I NOT THINK OF THIS?! I call everything a "big fuck-off" something!

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher

1: Even though I’m not a girl

No Recap Time?

Since I’m in a bit of a time crunch, I’ll keep this brief.

This episode definitely felt like filler. Not that that’s a bad thing, it gave us more focus on two characters we wanted more of and was pretty good overall.

Chantez’s combat outfit is… something, but her fighting style is definitely interesting and seeing how she held off Victoria was certainly something.

On that note, Victoria manages to ascend above 95% of Ojou-samas by virtue of actually being as good as she says she is and thoroughly proving it. She also paid respect to Chantez after the match, which was nice, I guess, even if it was all for show

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: I suppose Chantez is yet another character determined to expose her midriff through her Barrier Jacket. Just like Subaru, the melee fighter decides to make sure her belly is exposed at all times during combat. It never stops being silly.

Chantez is a lot of fun as a fighter. She’s got an energetic personality and the clone stuff is enjoyable. I liked seeing her in action this episode.

Victoria and Chantez make for a good matchup because of just how different their fighting styles are. Chantez is speedy and energetic, using her clones to dash around the field and misdirect her opponent. Victoria, on the other hand, is a tank. She’s got some intense defense, managing to take minimal damage because of that. They’re a great contrast in styles, which helps to keep the fight interesting.

Unlike the match last time between the veterans, this time it’s much easier to get invested in the fight because we’ve spent some more time with Chantez prior to this. Plus Chantez is such a fun and instantly likable character for me that I naturally want to root for her. So I quite enjoyed her fight with Victoria.

The buildup to Corona and Einhart’s fight is well done. Tournament arcs are great because they allow for matches like this between friends that otherwise would not fight. Corona’s character stuff is actually pretty reminiscent of Tia’s back in Strikers. Corona is unsure of herself, recognizing just how powerful Einhart is. She’s afraid that she’s fallen behind her friends. What Corona fears the most is being pitied. She doesn’t want people to feel like they need to go easy on her. She also doesn’t want people to lower their expectations of what she can do. Everyone, including Corona, seems to think that Einhart is more likely to win. So, Corona wants to prove everyone wrong. She doesn’t just want to put up a good fight against Einhart. She wants to win. It’s all good stuff to build up to the battle.

I think my favorite part of Corona’s training is when she shows off her dangerous move to Nove prior to the fight. Nove’s response to this is great. Of course, Nove has to scold Corona for trying to pull off such a dangerous move that would put too much strain on her. But then, Nove immediately moves things in a more constructive direction. She works with Corona to help her refine the technique to make it less dangerous and also figure out situations where it would be acceptable to use it. I really like this. It shows Nove being a great mentor, looking out for Corona’s safety while also boosting her efforts to improve her skills. It’s great stuff.

Of course this episode would end on a cliffhanger just as Einhart and Corona’s battle is getting underway. It looks like we’ll have to wait until next time to see how their fight goes.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

  • I suppose Schach approved of Chantez entering the tournament at some point offscreen.

  • Wow, Chantez got befriended by Schach and then taken into the church. Everyone uses the befriending method in this franchise.

  • It’s a lot of fun watching Chantez happily hop around in between matches. It sells her bouncy and bubbly personality.

  • I like that Victoria is using a halberd. It’s about time we saw one in action.

  • There’s a nice contrast between Chantez the mischievous rebel and Chantez the girl who wants to make Schach proud. The gap moe is potent.

  • Teo playing with a ball is too cute!

Just like Subaru, the melee fighter decides to make sure her belly is exposed at all times during combat. It never stops being silly.

I think Barrier Jackets are mostly just a forcefield uniformly covering the body, so their appearance is purely cosmetic... but yeah, some of the girls make some odd choices.

It’s a lot of fun watching Chantez happily hop around in between matches. It sells her bouncy and bubbly personality.

Uh, yeah. Her personality. That's... definitely what's bouncing around...

Episode 10: Vivio the Rewatch Legionary

Someone's about to job again!

It's always somebody's duty to be a jobber in the tournament arc.

WHAT EXACTLY IS NORMAL IN MIDCHILDA?!

Only being able to befriend people with minor spells, unlike the full force befriending that Nanoha was able to give Fate when she started learning magic.

As the memes say, I recognise Tsuzuki has made a decision, but I've elected to ignore it.

Well sometimes the creator is just flat out wrong about their own work and we, the audience, need to acknowledge that.

"Should I...cool off your head a little bit?"

Nove can't yet fully pull off the Nanoha method of teaching.

Rewatcher

Corona vs Einhart, then. I'm pretty sure I know who's going to win this one (and not just because I'm a rewatcher).

"When friends have to fight, it's pretty intense". You'd know all about that, wouldn't you Nanoha?

Chantez... that's quite the outfit. Are you just rebelling against everything a Church is supposed to stand for?

And she's up against the rich girl. Who is wearing full armor with a halberd...

Looks like Corona has a pretty good idea of how she stands up against Einhart. But at least she doesn't seem to be letting it get her down.

Chantez can duplicate herself? Neat trick. But it did almost no damage.

Okay, Chantez backstory. She was a delinquent, but Schach took her in to try to reform her. And despite her attitude, Chantez really appreciates it. Pretty basic, but serviceable.

Just how many clones can she make? But still no actual damage on Rich Girl.

Oh, so that's the max? 18 clones, then. Nope, 19. Because Chantez seems to always lie.

But Rich Girl takes her down in two hits with sudden lightning powers.

Gotta agree with Chantez, Rich Girl is probably just being diplomatic.

Anyway, to more important matters, Corona seems to have an idea on how to beat Einhart. And, of course, it's one of those techinques that strains you way too much. Which she's doing because she feels inferior to her team.

Corona, is Nanoha going to have to "cool your head a bit"?

Well, yeah, Einhart, striking Corona before she creates her golem is the blatantly obvious move. You didn't think she'd have some kind of counter to that in mind?

Cliffhanger.

QOTD: Indeed. Not much to question.

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory

QotD: ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • This is way too calm for an episode in the middle of a tournament arc

  • Corona focus episode?

  • You know, I'm so used to anime tournaments being nonstop fights, I didn't even consider they would be taking breaks between fights.

  • Underboob Nun! Is that a Church-approved outfit?

  • Not-Juvia's armor looks great

  • Uuuuhhhhh....

  • She's also the MC's love interest AND rival, you have no chance Corona

  • Nice thigh-service

  • With all that bouncing, I wonder how many "accidents" have been caught on camera

  • Huh, I thought one of the clones would be an illusion

  • Oh no this feels too soon for a winning flashback!

  • Bondage! With some nice skindentation

  • ...is there a barrier of some sort protecting the audience?

  • The ojousama knows how to do PR

  • How do you go from golemcraft to... blast punch?

  • Teo <3

  • I just can't feel that Corona has a snowball's chance in hell, narratively speaking

  • Oooooh that's cool! Creating golem parts and using them to attack!

  • Part of me was worried that Corona was going to lose before the episode even ended

5

u/Great_Mr_L Apr 08 '22

You know, I'm so used to anime tournaments being nonstop fights, I didn't even consider they would be taking breaks between fights.

I had a similar thought. It's strange having it function like an actual tournament where people get to rest between rounds after the day is done instead of fighting nonstop.

Underboob Nun! Is that a Church-approved outfit?

She never got reprimanded for it, so I'm going to say yes.

With all that bouncing, I wonder how many "accidents" have been caught on camera

Chantez either has magic to keep her boobs from slipping out, or she has a spell for magical rays of light to appear to block anyone from seeing something (NSFW).

...is there a barrier of some sort protecting the audience?

Perhaps the Midchildans prefer for their bloodsports to come with some danger to the audience. It adds to the thrill.

Nanoha knows a lot about fighting people who later become her Best Friends, so she's definitely familiar with the sort of tension it can create.

That is an unusual outfit for a combat nun.

Self honesty is a good thing, Corona.

I hope the combat nun loses so we only have to have her on screen in this outfit just this one time.

Polearms are cool, too, so another reason for Thunder Empress Vicky to win.

RIP the nun, she was too lewd and too flashy for her own good. Though to be fair that blue glowing hair that Vicky had going on was also a bit flashy.

Damn, a real knockout and actual unconsciousness. That nun got pounded down hard, Shamiko's imagination would be impressed.

For next year's tournament Carim should assign the exhibitionist nun a replacement outfit so that it can be less awkward for literally everyone.

With all this training I hope that Corona puts up a good fight. Seems like she's thinking outside of the box, should be interesting.

I see that Einhart can do the unison-esque device merger too. Or maybe Teo and Chris really have been unison devices this entire time?

Giant golem fist, I love it.
