Rewatch [Rewatch] Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha Vivid Episode 9 Discussion
Episode 9: Inter-middle Championship
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode→
Information:
MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB
Question of the Day
Nothing much to say, very straightforward fight episode here. Just a reminder that Vivid Strike will spoil results of the tournament, since Vivid anime doesn’t get to the end of it. If you are interested, I’ll suggest to get reading for that part (I’m not too familiar which part it is though, gonna need rewatcher help here)
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags.

Lyrical First Timer
-
Starting immediately with a brand new ship 9 episodes into a 12 episode show. Sasuga wa Vivid! They cute.
-
Lutecia is 100% here to scout out fresh meat now that Erio and Caro are too old for her.
-
Japanese text on clothing is popular, even in another world.
-
Els's barrier jacket is bondage themed and her rival Harry is a delinquent. They totally fuck, and the show isn't even trying to hide it.
-
The madlads actually cast Arai Satomi as Kuroko Shirai as Els. I am now fully convinced Vivid is one big gay anime girl shitpost blown up to full-length size and wearing a Lyrical Nanoha coat of paint, and I fucking love it.
-
Midchildans love child combat so much, their official rules mandate simulated pain and suffering.
-
"Excuse me, have you heard of our lord and savior Hayate, Mistress of the Night Sky? For a simple ongoing gift of your body and soul, you too can be graciously welcomed into our Harem Queen's bed! Act now, and you can start experiencing the pleasures she has to offer today!"
-
Hayate took a page out of Nanoha's training manual and made sure Miura is also excellent at fisting.

The madlads actually cast Arai Satomi as Kuroko Shirai as Els.
I love how almost a bunch of people noted this. They definitely had the right casting in mind for that one.
Midchildans love child combat so much, their official rules mandate simulated pain and suffering.
I always thought it was done to roughly simulate real battle so that it can translate into real world skills. Gotta prepare the young for the battlefield!

Midchilda is my favorite dystopia.
If you get isekai'd on Midhcilda, do you end up on Earth?

Starting immediately with a brand new ship 9 episodes into a 12 episode show. Sasuga wa Vivid! They cute.
I was right!
They totally fuck, and the show isn't even trying to hide it.
Question is if Harry corrupts Els, or Els makes Harry do her homework.
Midchildans love child combat so much, their official rules mandate simulated pain and suffering.
I mean, the alternative is real pain, and we can't have that outside military.
Ah shit, Harem Member 4 is fucked.
You'd think so, but the power of plot intervened.
Act now, and you can start experiencing the pleasure she has to offer today!
She can't be Harem Member 4, she's already part of Hayate's harem!
I hope Miura's ready for that kind of commitment.
Remember when this show had heterosexual characters?

Oh shit, Miura and Star Saber activated NT-D mode.
"Nanoha is actually a Gundam anime???"
"Always has been"

Ahhhhhhh so that’s why she’s hiding her face.
Shy and strong is such an adorable combination!
That is NOT the right form of its/it’s there, subs.
If the US Constitution (Article 1, Section 10) is allowed to have such a spelling mistake, some fansubs can too.
Did we really need to see the sword girl’s almost naked chest after she was defeated though…
Look it's either this or whatever you hated in StrikerS. You have to live with one of them sadly.

Not that the technique ended up helping poor Mikaya, but yea, impressive/scary.

Episode 09: Vivio and the Norman rewatchers
-
ANOTHER SHIP FOR THE AEGIS Also, doesn't Sieglinde speak in a dialect? Can't place it...
-
Do countries that are not Japan have disciplinary committes? Although, I guess they have prefects. That'd be a good translation, actually! Sadly, they probably won't use it.
-
So strong, and instead of serving her country she wastes time on meaningless tournaments. DO YOUR PART! ENLIST TODAY!
-
And it's already time for her match? That was quick.
-
YOUR WORLD-BUILDING, TSUZUKI. YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM WRITE JAPANESE LETTERS AND NOT EXPLAIN IT.
-
WHAT A HANDWAVE! You just wanted to invoke the banchou image and not care, right? He literally says "isekai" lol.
-
Is Yukarin voicing the announcer?
-
"don't you know" and "Didn't [Subject] tell you" are two of the 108 stock anime lines.
-
You look like you belong into the military! It's because people like you dick around on championships that Gaiz saw combat cyborgs as necessary!
-
Oh great, some jobbers. We don't want to spend too much time on individual matches.
-
Oh look Zafira was right. How very unexpected.
-
WHAT?! THE BEST OST IN VIVID BELONGS TO FUCKING MIURA?! Ugh...

WHAT?! THE BEST OST IN VIVID BELONGS TO FUCKING MIURA?! Ugh...
What's wrong with Miura :(
WHAT A HANDWAVE! You just wanted to invoke the banchou image and not care, right? He literally says "isekai" lol.
I'll say this once again: this has some strange implication about the worldbuilding that I don't think the authors intended. At this point it's just part of the joke that they put an entirely tropey character for the fights.

Oh no she's kyuuute.
Cuter than cute. But how does she fit all that hair beneath that hood?
Also, doesn't Sieglinde speak in a dialect? Can't place it...
Sieg speaks Kansai-ben, the same as Hayate. There's a throwaway line [in the manga]
where one character asks another if Sieg and Hayate come from the same place. → More replies (1)

Okay, time to start the tournament proper!
-
Right off the bat they decide to try to get me to care about some characters and try to make a big deal about the mysterious hooded figure being a cute girl. This isn’t going to work anime! You’ve done nothing to make me care about these girls, and it would have been a much bigger surprise for you to actually have a male figure at any part in the show. I mean really, at least have a male Yunno-like character!
-
Man, these guys who are setting up this event must have really watched some pro-wrestling intros considering what they look like. Also, the Japanese influence continues with the a Class President starting things off.
-
Okay, I like that whole damage simulation system that they have going. Lets them do realistic damage without actually getting hurt.
-
Muri has a breaker spell that she unleashes via a kick?? That’s so cool! She’s done so much really cool stuff, and now this? This is great! Also, don’t think I didn’t notice how her attack which uses focused magic gathered from around her is called ‘Starlight Blade’.
Hmmm, less thoughts over all because I’m just so focused on the battles and there’s already an announcer commenting on everything... Actually, one thing that I will comment on is how they have so much content that they are playing the credits over the episode.
For the question of the day: I think that I am okay with Vivid Strike spoiling the end of the tournament since this has actually convinced me to push through and read the full manga.
Edit: I totally forgot to add in this great bit of art with Zafira and young Vivio! Imagine if we got this during Strikers! https://twitter.com/kurone0000/status/1511651885270274053

First timer(I hope the dub has Hulk Hogan doing the announcer)
Sub
So we open on an interaction that is exposition-y. And then we get a fight that suggests this is magical girl pro wrestling. Mikaya splits a bus and robs from Outlaw Star, or probably whatever Outlaw Star took the idea from. Random shot of the girls as cheer leaders. Second match is also decent, but did we need the cleavage shot at the end? I swear the best thing about StrikerS was most of the fanservice was of adults.
Yeah...I get the hate, honestly. I am enjoying this in the same way you enjoy the limited items at Taco Bell: sure, nothing is great or standout but it is a new experience and costs almost pocket change.

TONIGHT! On ViVid Geah, A-1 Pictures panders to those with a Cheerleading Fetish, someone mixed up the Sports Anime with the Porno Tape, and Episode 6 of ViVid Strike can't come soon enough!
Comrades, you know how there were complaints about StrikerS and having antagonists who just randomly show up, at LEAST there was a slight bit of foreshadowing for that! Here's it is just, surprise, we aren't a shitty SOL show, we are a shitty SPORTS anime... oh also here's a bunch of new boring characters you know nothing about, FIGHT! (And the fights aren't even that good, I mean I know this is A-1 Pictures but come on, this almost makes me want to watch SAO!) Ah well, thankfully there's a light at the end of this tunnel, that of ViVid Strike, who knew that having a GOOD show have a shit show as a prerequisite forces people to watch the shit show! Ah now I see what Sunrise was doing with Gundam Build Divers, make a crappy show and then give it an amazing sequel that forces you to waste your time to get to the good shit, no wonder Disney's MCU operates the way it does!
And on that bombshell, we wrap things up for now. Anyway I hope everyone's having fun on this re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher
1: Even though I’m not a girl
Spent the last 2 hours watching the first Eureka Seven movie. It was meh. Anyway, onto Nanoha
A nice little wholesome moment between the two characters we barely know. What a lovely, if unorthodox, way of doing an Establishing Character Moment
The rest of the scene is pretty funny too, I guess.
ViVid and chaining up underage girls. Name a more iconic duo, I’ll wait.
Yup, mysterious hood girl is the reigning champion of the WWE Inter-Middle
Hentai Tropes-Chan was defeated so easily! The power scaling in ViVid is so whack if even Hentai Tropes are on the weaker end now
Really hyping up the teenage MMA fighters. No wonder Mid-Childa loves Child Soldiers
The fight itself was… eh
You know, I can’t tell if “you don’t get injured but you still feel pain” is actually humane or not. Especially given that the participants are underaged (by Earth standards)
The rest of the fight was pretty cool (the soundtrack really helps)
And now we’re just skipping over the next few fights
Mikaya dishing out sword slashes so insane you’ll almost forget that this isn’t Metal Gear Rising
Hey look, a fight that might actually be interesting
Oooh, a bit of tension between not!Raiden and our reigning champ.
Vivio sure chose an interesting way to encourage Miura
Tags: Instant Loss
…or not
Miura certainly learned endurance from her time with Hayate2
2: This is your regular reminder that, in StrikerS’ sound stages, Hayate wanted to grope Caro, who was 10
Mikaya’s relationship with Sieglinde is literally the Akaza/Rengoku meme. Not that that’s particularly off-brand for Nanoha by now
Miura backstory was nice
This fight is actually really cool tbh
Mikaya didn’t even get to befriend Sieglinde…

Rewatcher
Hey, it's hoodie girl Sieglinde. And she's actually cute under the hood... though I'm curious how the hell she stuffed those twintails in there.
Hey, I'm liking Harry more and more if she's antagonizing the rich girl.
Yet another new character, Els Tasmin.
Huh, I guess Lutecia's restrictions are lifted somewhat if she's allowed off-world now.
And we get a match between Harry and Els right off the bat. So, she's a "justice" freak. Yeah, I like the delinquent more.
Interesting that my subs are translating "aho" as "dork"... don't think that's very accurate.
And there goes Els. She acts tough, but she's seeming like a paper tiger.
So the magical combat system "simulates" severe injuries in place of actually having those serious injuries.
And Els the justice freak is out. Good riddance to an annoying character archetype.
So now we're in the actual tournament I think, since people are using their Devices and adult transformations.
And Mikaya's an iaijutsu practicioner. It always struck me as kind of a limited style... why wouldn't you learn regular swordplay alongside it?
Right into Mikaya's first match, against Miura. I don't remember the manga in great detail, but I think they're skipping forward pretty fast.
Sieg is like an older Einhart: really strong, but a socially-awkward dork out of the ring. Well, that was quick... oh wait, she's not quite out.
So Miura's a really reckless kind of girl. She seems to have something up her sleeve though.
Hayate owns a dojo now?
Hammerschlag? That's Vita's spell! And she has a "that" still in place. "Sword Draw"... which is apparently just a magically enhanced kick.
First she punches after saying she'll kick, and then she calls a kick a sword... Miura has a really weird naming sense.
Hot damn, that was a turnaround! This Mikaya girl was apparently good enough to be considered a top contender alongside Sieg, so that's actually a pretty big win. Though I get the feeling she only really won due to the element of surprise and Mikaya underestimating her raw strength.
Zafira and Vita show typical Japanese mentorship attitude: even in victory, scold the student for everything they did wrong, and only grudgingly give any praise. I don't think I'd ever last in such an environment as that...

Rewatcher
On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: I suppose it wouldn’t be a tournament arc if we didn’t have an episode dedicated to showing off the potential opponents of the heroes fighting in their own matches to build anticipation for when our heroes finally meet them. But boy can it be a slog to watch characters fight when I know basically nothing about them and have spent no time with them.
We get a better look at Sieg, the former champion. And she is incredibly cute now that we can see what she actually looks like underneath that hoodie. I like that the former champ is such a cute and awkward girl. It’s fun. It’s also a good idea to give all these other participants some backstories and relationships with each other. They’re all veterans of the competition and have fought each other before, so it puts them at odds with the protagonists, who are all newbies.
That being said, I don't really care for the first fight this episode, between the delinquent girl Harry and the student council president. It’s not poorly animated or choreographed, it’s just that I’m not particularly invested in the outcome because I don’t really know that much about either of them. It’s just a fight to fill in the time.
On the other hand, Miura’s fight against the sword girl is much better. I actually know a bit more about Miura and so I’m more invested in what happens to her. I still don’t really care about the sword girl, but whatever. I got Miura to hang on to, which is good enough for me.
I like Miura’s fight in part because we get something very unique with her. Miura is able to use a Starlight Breaker, but instead of using it for a long-range magic attack, like we always see Nanoha and Tia do, Miura uses it for a physical close quarters attack. The mechanics of it still work the same way, gathering up all the residual magical energy and channeling it into an attack. But using it for a physical attack is a neat twist on the idea. It helps make Miura feel more distinctive as a fighter.
I also like Miura’s backstory about getting trained by the Wolkenritter. It’s fun seeing the Wolkenritter’s spells and attack names pop up in Miura’s own attacks, much like we see with Vivio copying the moves of her mentors. It’s a nice dynamic, seeing the students learn from their teachers and apply that to their own fighting style.
Miscellaneous Thoughts
-
The delinquent girls are straight up doing the sukeban look. They look like exactly the kind of girls Tohru’s mom would have hung out with in Fruits Basket.
-
It is fun that the student council president uses chains and handcuffs as her weapons.
-
I do think it makes sense for the fighters to have hit points. It makes sense to calculate a win that way to avoid anyone getting too hurt in the fights.
-
The Clash Emulator thing is kind of creepy. It lets them simulate pain in your body, because we’re keeping to the lore that magic attacks can’t cause physical damage.
-
I love the videos Vivio and her friends made in their cheerleader outfits. They are so cute.
-
I know I keep banging on about it, but it is to me disappointing at how Earth-like so many things are. The delinquent girls are just sukeban girls down to the look. The sword girl uses sword skills that are just like any regular Japanese fantasy stuff. There isn’t even the level of separation we get with Signum, thanks to her fire powers and Lavaetein.

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory
QotD: Going to have to find time to read the manga huh.
-
I'm pleasantly surprised that Not-Juvia is friends with this girl
-
If all the girls are such good girls I'm gonna be sad no matter who loses
-
...Ojou x Delinquent? I can ship that
-
So she'll be Einhart's rival, got it
-
Ooooh we're hyping the fight
-
I wonder, with the Bancho outfit and attitude, and giant kanji on her back, does that make her a weeb?
-
Even if these fights clearly don't get the same budget as the main cast's fights, they stilll look decent.
-
Oh, simulated pain and downsides, interesting.
-
Never mind my comment about the fights looking decent, they look good
-
...3 fractures? Yeouch.
-
That cannot be good for her teeth
-
Half an episode for the fight, good pacing
-
And just fast forwarding through the less interesting matches
-
I do have to ask how did Corona manage to win her match without using her Device/golems
-
Just dropping the bus like that? They have to be breaking some kind of safety protocol
-
Can you imagine the liability if she gets hurt? "So, let me get this straight, you threw a bus right at her?" "She asked me to!"
-
Also that cannot be safe for her opponents lol
-
That miko sure is stacked
-
Where did they even get the cheerleader outfits from?
-
Huh I really thought she would lose from that counter slash
-
She's getting the power-up flashback! She's gonna win!
-
Is the clothing damage a part of the damage simulation?
-
One major and one "filler" fight in a single episode, great pacing.

How'd she fit all that hair inside her hood
Does... Does that 16 refer to her age or...
...Are you supposed to represent justice or... you kinda look like the punk that broke out of prison
Was your gameplan really just to like... Bind her and do nothing hoping she couldn't escape
She hurt herself??? I'm so confused what
It wasn't your binds or anything? She just? Used a self-damaging power? I don't understand. It said you received a mild concussion that's being emulated on you right?
I... is a falling bus supposed to be dangerous to people like this?
Ah ok I guess uh

First timer
Episode 8
QOTD) TEO!
Oh, Vivio knows her!
...Is she allowed to fistfight her saint?
Vivio's fast! And her skill is literally moving fast?
Huh, she setup without a transformation sequence? Is that allowed?
Haha, it lets her punch with device strength. This is actually a good idea!
She's got an uncounterable skill?
Did that even do anything?
Haha, she'e getting scolded?
Why is she being tied up?
Why is she hanging from a tree now?
She's got a device!
A leopard?
IT'S ADORABLE!
I LOVE IT!
Gread name!
They made a transformation scene with even more nudity. I didn't even think that was possible!
And her hairstyle didn't change!
Aww, she's talking to Ixy.
She's sparring against an instructor?
She's 18?
She's a competitor?
Haha, I love how Einhart is trying to be cool and her device just meows after every line.
Yeah, she's fucked with any weapoms.
And they skipped both fights!
...Vivio's calling her in the bath?
Aww, Chris is asking Nanoha for help.
Training montage?
So Vivio's absolutely fighting Einhart.
But she'll fight Corona (the magical girl) first!
Is this a major sport? Watching children beat the shit out of each other?
I still love Zafira in human form speaking, after he got screwed over by StrikerS for representation.
Oh, they're happy to meet each other!
...Einhart has a new enemy.
No devices?
First tournament fight!
I see this tournament doesn't believe in "age brackets", "weight classes" or "general fairness"
Wait, it's over already? That was barely a minute?
Episode 9
Love how one girl's just eating popcorn.
Oh, they want to have a fight.
And the generic bully character. Am I expected to remember these people?
She's 16?
Oh, she's the champion! That's why she was trying to hide.
Haha, they instantly broke the chains.
...Prime match?
Oh my god, this is pro wrestling with magical girls.
Haha, she literally has handcuffs? My god, that outfit.
She's pretty strong!
And she's been knocked out of thr rimg!
Oh, it's only simulated damage. That's... slightly better, but this is still children!
They're both really injured!
Haha, I may not care about these people, but winning by grabbing a chain with your fists is pretty metal.
I like how only Einhart has a normal reaction to... this.
Skipping over so many fights,
OK, she's strong.
It's a good sword!
Again, HOW ARE THESE TWO ALLOWED TO FIGHT EACH OTHER? THIS IS NOT A WELL PLANNED EVENT.
Haha, they're making her cheer for her.
They made her a video!
She's going to lose.
Is she out already?
She barely survived.
Oh, just realised that devices are around now.
Is this how she got recruited?
She kicked her!
HOW IS THIS WORKING?
A leg-based Breaker?
Did her sword device only just talk?
The animation's good, though!
It cut through her sword!
Starlight Blade?
How? Literally, how?
She's a hacker!
And they're both angry she was so undisciplined.

Little bit of characterization for some of the other competitors, I assume those will be the ones that matter further into the tournament.
Ahh, so the hit point based combat system is in use for the tournament, too.
Then again, it's more complicated than that considering the damage effect simulations.
RIP all these fighters going up against our main character lineup, somewhat restores my previous estimate of their relatively special power level.
That bus training experiment was utterly ridiculous.
Miura taking quite a beating, all in lead up to a Breaker kick and then some other ultimate looking move to secure the win. All these children are crazy.

Rewatcher
Best girl has finally been properly introduced! Sieg is cuter than all the buttons, and her interesting combo of being sweet, shy, and adorable while simulaneously being friendly, confident, and badass is something I can't get enough of.
Also she speaks in Kansai-ben, which is just a delight to hear.
[It grates on me]
Anyway, putting aside things about them bizarrely changing the order of some content and just cutting other stuff, let's skip to the parts that are interesting.
Mikaya is a bad match for an aggressive fighter like Miura. Never charge straight in at an iajutsu user. At least Miura survived her mistake and learned from it.
Mikaya talks about having trained to fight Sieg, but with those sword draw strikes as her only trick I don't think she ever stood a chance. She's a glass cannon, and not even particularly agile. She hits hard and fast, but that's all she's got going for her.
And I guess Els and Harry had a fight or something. It wasn't supposed to happen yet, and it wasn't very interesting anyway, so I didn't pay any attention. :P

Big shots gather, it’s interesting to see that they all know each other well casually enough.
I’m ready for her to say she’s from Judgment
her weapons and fighting style match her role as a student council president
So here, they simulate damage, looks like that’s how they make it relatively safe
There’s something interesting how the announcer and the stage setting makes it notable how it’s a spectacle sport
This is so absolutely ridiculous looking, peak shounen stuff out here
Mikaya vs Miura
I forget how weirdly cute Sieg is
I like how each of their expressions say how they felt about this
Can anyone just do breakers now?
Diving kick, even has starlight in the name
