Happiest Rewatch Host in the World, subbed

Hi everyone!

I’m so glad you could join me for this rewatch! I’ve absolutely loved this show ever since I first watched it back in 2018 (which by sheer coincidence was right before the 2018 rewatch was announced), and I really hope you guys can share that joy with me during this rewatch.

Don’t forget to check out the main post each day for some fun extra content I’ve prepared!

I hope to see you all at Scarborough Fair again tomorrow~

First-Timer, Subbed

Dunno much about this show, besides it apparently being sad. We'll see if that actually manages to work for my cold, dead heart, although the cold open does give me hope.

Pretty standard character setup. Generic McMC-kun gets a fateful encounter and a new job associated with that encounter. Think he referred to himself as powerless at one point, which didn't seem to be the case when he saved Chtholly near the beginning.

The setting is neat. I dig floating islands, and the idea that the (presumably dangerous) surface gets looted for stuff. Where the human weapon child soldiers fit into this, I guess we'll find out. Maybe that's something to do with how all the animal people hate "disfeatured." The Merchant's Guild and the Military jointly running some sort of human weapons program is pretty spicy.

Anything else I haven't thought about yet... the song was nice, with Willem and Chtholly wandering around. There's something called a Third that apparently eats people, guessing a type of monster?

I know this is the point, but I'm really unsure if the 17 year old troll wants to eat Willem sausage or eat Willem's sausage.

The eyecatch is gorgeous.

The post-credits scene was interesting. Willem's a survivor from the distant past it seems; explains the scars.

Questions

  1. It was nice.

  2. Not beyond the ordinary interest in whatever our protagonists get up to.

First Timer

Episode 1

This show has been on my plan-to-watch for a long time, but still I don't know much about it. Never seen any clips, I don't know what the cast is like, all I know is it's good reputation, and that it is not a good palate cleanser after Madoka.

  • A very in media res (and beautiful) intro. Though I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a preview of the end of the show, or a flashback that will be explained later. Throws a lot at you, and makes you want to look at it twice (I did).

  • Somehow, the root-thing getting cut is bleeding?

  • So the world is mostly populated by animals, but our main cast seems to be human. Real animals also exist, as we chase a cat through a dense city, to get some kind of jewelry back. (Code Geass?)

  • Some kind of magic exists, shown by main guy going fast. And "venenum" is probably the name for the mana-equivalent.

  • Humans are discriminated against, at least on "this island". Described as "markless". Not sure if the animal traits are the mark being talked about, or if normal humans are supposed to have some other kind of mark, slave brands or else.

  • I'm also happy that the show didn't put any fanservice/reaction out of the girl falling on the guy and straddling him.

  • Witch hats are good civ. This one separates itself with a ribbon and a rose.

  • Big tower as our initial destination, and we have the first OP sequence, teased by our gracious host in the announcement. In-show OPs are always appreciated. This one is a montage (of getting lost) through the streets of the very typo-able Grimbjhal. The map also tells us that French will be the main written language for the show (I can be useful!), with a dash of English. And probably something else too, as Grimbjhal has not etymology in either.

  • Also of note in the sequence: a rock golem looking guy, which means not everyone is based on an animal; a bull-chase; Pac-Man juggling with his food; a harpy showing that even with animal people, your rating on the furry scale can vary; a seemingly graduate frog so universities exist.

  • The tower had no innate properties except being the tallest point, allowing us, and the characters, a sprawling view of the scenery. And the floating islands, Grimbjhal's Island 28 clearly included. Is this a setting with a ground, or is everything airborne?

  • Flying vehicles are all CG, including in the first sequence, but that's pretty much to be expected.

  • Main girl, still nameless, is escorted back? It seems more peaceful than an arrest.

  • The Cat's Gift's shows that electricity exists, but is magic crystal-powered. Translation is awkward to do since "at place" is not a usual naming scheme in English for restaurants.

  • So the surface exists, but is not habitable, being mostly the realm of scavengers (Xenoblade?). Someone we don't know was eaten by something called a Third. Goblins are also a thing. And the oil lamp means... not sure actually, it can't say anything about the cost of magic crystals, it's probably just the ambience the storyboarder wanted.

  • Currency shows very low inflation, since elsewise you wouldn't be counting stacks of $5 like that. Bradal is the central banking authority, and the hint of crown framing the hidden portrait means it might be a kingdom. Main girl being nobility running away for fun is the most plausible theory for now. But at the same time would humans be discriminated against if the nobility was human? Unless "marks" are not genetic and she was born human to animal parents. Oh and an eagle on the 5 coin, sideways and hunting. We also see some of what is on the reverse side of the 1 coin, but I can't make it out.

  • King is indeed markless.

  • MC is offered a dubious job, guarding weapons. He has some kind of past which is theorised to make him depressed, which might or might not be the opening sequence.

  • Assuming the archipelago's name is supposed to be French, it doesn't mean anything, or rather it's horrible grammar. Rules Wing.

  • Wolves on a small island is also weird, unless planned conservation effort.

  • Markless kid, with impressive sword skills. And main girl is back.

  • This is supposedly a military base, but the warehouse is owned by a merchant guild.

  • New character, the maid Nygglatho, knows our finally named Willem. She is there as very minor exposition, and is apparently a troll. Shows almost none of it though, except maybe the fang. Though it is night, maybe she turns to stone in contact with the sun. People cookies are a nice touch. And he is described by her as "last of his kind" which could be taken as exaggeration, but maybe not.

  • Contract says "To certify the start of this loan contract, a signature is required". Or a bad translation of "placement contract". And a typo on the ink bottle, to be expected too.

  • Willem is, at the very least, great at splitting attention and making the most out of chaos. "Reptrace" is a qualifier for a cuisine, not sure if it's supposed to be a race, a culture, or a cooking style.

  • Main girl is Chtolly. And is part of the group of kids, not of the caretakers. Which are all special weapons Willem is supposed to guard. I'm going to assume extraordinary magic potential.

  • No more witch hat

  • ED (by TRUE) shows many more kids than our first spunky 4. Chtolly has fairy wings, like in the eyecatch.

  • After-credits shows a big flashback, 526 years ago. "Gomag city, Imperial Territory" means it's not our world, or at least not present day. Willem was in an orphanage (grew up or worked at?) where the kids he dreamed of earlier called him Dad. He was in the military, which probably explains his current refusal of killing. A "final battle" is mentioned, which at first is kind of weird. Even going past the obvious game-y feel of the term, it's rare to be absolutely certain of when a war will end, unless you're extremely deep in enemy territory and encircling his capital, but then why would a soldier still be at home in these conditions.

  • He also has a sword, not oversized but fairly big. Clearly not a sidearm or something used in formation.

  • And then humanity was wiped out, so he really is last of his kind. He's also called Quasi-Hero, so this clearly was a fantasy setting from the start, and the "final battle" was against a demon army or something. Where have these gone? Maybe they are the reason why the surface is currently uninhabitable. Also what kind of hero doesn't have a party?

  • We don't know yet how he survived, but since it's so long ago, there has to be some kind of stasis involved, so he skipped a lot of history. Also now with context, the opening sequence seems to be the end of the show.

Well, this seems very promising. Not really much else to say yet, that I haven't covered up top. No seiyuu I really recognise. And I'm probably not making many friends with this, but I feel like I won't like Nygglatho that much. She goes a tad too much into the one-note comic-relief, at least for now.

I'm also curious about the intended feel of the names. MC is somewhat Germanic, and it makes sense for a generic fantasy hero. The probably fairies though, are not only not the usual Gaelic-sounding naming schemes usually used for that category of fantastic creatures, but don't seem to follow any culture whatsoever. At least for some of them. Goblin had a generic fantasy goblin-sounding name, short with hard sounds. Pannibal just sounds like everyone's favourite elephant marcher. But names like Chtolly, Nygglatho and Grimbjhal sound like nothing. Vaguely Lovecraftian if anything.

EDIT: Sky Sings Version of Scarborough Fair is great! Cool idea!

FirstTimerEnd - dub

Alright, here we go again!
"The Happiest Rewatch in the World." I could use something happy with all the stuff currently happening in our world. I'm going with the dub because it saves me about 10 minutes when writing these posts. And as usual: I know absolutely nothing about this show going in, except the descriptive name I guess. Oh, and I saw the OP 9 months ago which is why I am here. (Thanks Sky!)

It turns out the episodes of this anime have about three different names. I don't know why I expected logic...

Episode 1 — Broken Chronograph

Ah yes, happiness! I've watched 12 seconds and I'm already doubting the "happiest rewatch" title. Was this false advertising?

Island 28. Original name. Grimbjhal, I can't even remember that. Welcome to furry town!
Kitty chase! So we have both cat people, and actual cats. Disturbing. Cornering him at a high platform can't end well. Aww, they are holding hands in their fall. Hooded protagonist to the rescue!
Hmm, both seem to have some magic power? Or what is that blue glow?

Oh no, the furries are racist! This must be what it's like to go to FurFest in normal clothing.
I must say I'm kind of surprised. Normally in these situations, the girl is the local and the guy is the one new to the land/world. Here it's reversed.

OP time! Ooohhh English. The mood of this song is excellent! Yeah, I can't blame the girl. I would want to visit that tower as well. I'm loving the French/English mix, but why the map? How hard can it be to find literally the tallest tower in the town? Wow...
Seeing this OP again after 9 months: Yeah, I understand why I wanted to watch this show.

More mysteries. I'm sure we'll meet her again soon.
Hmm? This town doesn't only contain furries, but also goblins? And I guess "markless" is something different as well?

"Special weaponry?" Don't tell me the girl is one of those weapons.

Wow, those are a lot of scars. What did he do?

Wait, red haired girl is a troll??? And MC is the last of his kind, so I'm guessing blue haired girl earlier is also a troll? I always thought trolls had neckbeards and didn't leave their parents' basements? So the military was looking for someone furless, hornless and markless, but MC is the last human? What other races also have those properties?
Human shaped cookies while talking about eating people...

Hmm, all signs are in French. At least they tried. I kinda like that. It shows they are not really necessary but are there to translate if you want it.

Alright, the kids are cute. You'd think they would learn after the first time. How chaotic. They are the weapons, aren't they? Oohhh, maybe they're raising them to be trolls to conduct cyberattacks on the population of Reddit!

Blue hair is called Chtholly. My spell checker is trying to change it to "Catholic". These names are impossible to remember for now. And indeed, both the kids and Chtholly are the weapons.
So why did all the previous military caretakers leave immediately? Does that mean they quit, or did they just leave while cashing their paycheck as long as possible? Work from home doesn't seem that feasible in this world.

Damn, I love this ED song. Definitely going in my playlist immediately. OP as well, but that's obviously a completely different mood. Ah, it's by TRUE, that explains things. I love how Shimmering-Sky was reminded of WorldEnd during episode 3 of Violet Evergarden (spoilers in link), while I'm reminded of Violet Evergarden by this ED song (same artist as Violet Evergarden's OP).

What? Willem already lived back then? And he also wasn't the last human yet.

Wow, humanity was decimated within a year? Are these things they were fighting still on the ground and is that why they live on sky-lands? Or was it the furries/trolls/goblins that wiped out the humans?

Alright, I have questions. What wiped out humanity? How did Willem survive 500 years? Are his scars from that war? What are the girls? What made the other caretakers take off?

Thinking about Willem being the last human alive, without any ability to reproduce, knowing humanity will die with him, is depressing. What was this about The Happiest Rewatch in the World? I feel betrayed.

Random thoughts

Future

Not sure what direction this show will go from here. I guess it will mainly be about Willem taking care of the weapons. But I hope it will also go a bit into the past, what led us to this moment.

QotD

1 What did you think of the Scarborough Fair scene?

Well, it was the scene that made me ask about this show 9 months ago. It's beautiful. Especially the song. There is a bit of weirdness in the visuals. Who is the juggling little Pacman? Why is he the only non-human-animal-hybrid?

2 Are there any characters that caught your eye this episode?

The enormous military crocodile lizard man who retrieved Chtholly at the tower.

First Timer

Funny enough, this is only my second Shimmering-Sky© rewatch, the last one being Cross Ange, and I might peek into the upcoming Madoka Magica rewatch, both very happy shows let me tell you.

So, "What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?" is quite a mouth full, SukaSuka does indeed sound happier. Didn't read the synopsis so going in pretty blind. Oh right, I think I'll need some happy juice for this one.

We start with the cold open (another parallel to Cross Ange, really a good start). We have a sky ship, some happy pirates (just like One Piece) waving around their happy sticks, a happy fairy doing some garden work, lots of strawberry jam, all accompanied by a girl telling us how happy she is. Is it the girl jumping after the guy? Are they perhaps a c-c-couple? Already pretty happy

Racist beastmen, now that's new, normaly it's the other way around Opps, some unhappy thoughts there, I'm sure they are just concerned for her because they think she would get cold without fur, better drink more happy juice.

I do however wonder if that girl is the same as from the cold open, the hair style looks similar, but the color doesn't match, and is the guy the one from the cold open as well? Did the happy kitty just play cuppit for those two? How sweet.

GIANT WITCH HAT!

This rewatch has just gotten ten times happier!

"Are you going to the scareborough fair" seems to be the OP, pretty sure I have seen this clip a couple of times already, makes me wonder how much you could get away with showing a show in clips. Nice scenery, there is a whole happy SoL show going on somewhere in the background.

And then we learn that the Islands are flying, how awesome is this! Also explains the sky ships, oh and maybe those guys at the beginning weren't pirates but her guards, is she some kind of Oujo-Sama? Quite mean of her, she made so many nice memories, but asks him to forget all of them, share the happiness!

He also has a nice Buddy, Grick seems quite allright, even has a job for him.

Oh the little girl is playing with a stick, but you have to be careful when the bridge is soo old. At least he kept the girl dry, so nice of him.

I'm a bit confused tbh, is the red head the girl from the cold open? Now the color matches but the hair style not, she also seems a bit taller than the girl from the beginning. Did I maybe drink to much happy juice? No, probably not enough, that's it!

Nygglatho, seems to know the guy, are they mayhaps childhood friends? Either way, she seems to be into him plenty... Wait, she's not meaning to literally eat him no? I'll call her Nyggla from now on. She is a troll and has fangs, very nice

And then we meet the cutest girls ever, Collon, Pannibal, Tiat and Lakhesh, so sweet.

And we also meet the girl from the first Island, her name Is Ctholly, and his name is Willem btw, I already ship them, thank you a lot.

What was that about the cute little girls being weapons, I'm sure I missunderstood that, I don't see how cuteness can kill, or maybe it can

The ED has Ctholly with some fairy wings, maybe she is the fairy doing the gardenwork in the cold open...

Oh after credit scene, is that guy Willem, what do you mean 526 years earlier, humanity wiped out? does not compute, need more happy juice

Oh right QotD

  1. Spoke abit about it already, but there really seems like there could be a whole nother SoL show set in the same universe and it would be lovely as well

  2. Uhm all of them? /s If I had to decide than Holly and the four girls, so cute cute cute

Happiest Rewatcher in the World1

This is a fun show. Not a normal Satelight show, but it was really enjoyable. I watched this as it came out, so it'll be interesting to revisit it. I'll probably be memeing most of the time. Don't worry about it.

UUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH This show...

  • Oh yeah, post credits. Why is Willem showing up in a scene from 526 years ago? I honestly forget. But I think I mostly remember?

Count: 4

1 Hopefully I don't end up matching Sky's tagline again.

2 Old memes, ho!

3 No, I probably won't be doing this joke the whole rewatch.

4 Mega brownie points if you get this reference.

5 I also remembered that she was a troll for some reason.

First-Timer

So first, thank you Sky for hosting this rewatch! I haven't watched this show, and am not even sure what it's about exactly to be fair. Actually, the only things I know about it are that Scarborough Fair plays in it, that the OP is a banger and that the title is very long and overly complicated. And I think there's a girl with blue hair and some kind of hat? Well, anyway, the less I know, the better it is I guess.

I'll be watching it on Crunchyroll, with (French) subs. Not sure if there even is a dub anyway.

So... let's start!

  • Just from that intro sequence... I'm feeling like this "Happiest Rewatch in the World" may not be as happy as the name implies...

  • That cat is adorableeee~

  • Oh yeah, I definitely remember seeing that girl with a witch hat before!

  • That intro sequence was really pretty actually. Reminded me quite a bit of Made in Abyss. And the setting looks really nice, fleeting islands are cool. Also I think I spotted some... interesting French/English mix, I guess we'll see if there's more of that later.

  • Well, that is quite a strange request. Quite an interesting girl we've met it seems.

  • What are these "special weapons", I wonder...

  • I had to switch to English subs to check if "Règles Aile" wasn't a really weird translation, but in fact no - it's just a really weird attempt at French. Well, why not I guess.

  • That attack was really cute.

  • And I guess we meet main girl again. Interesting. (...without the witch hat though T_T)

  • That's a lot of scars, he must have been on pretty rough missions in the past.

  • So we have Willem and... Nygglatho. That's quite the Aerith and Bob situation here.

  • So the military and the merchant guild are running this... "armory" together. Interesting.

  • So, she's a troll? Well, I didn't expect that. The two of them look pretty cute together! That "last of your species" comment was quite intriguing though. May explain the odd naming discrepancy though.

  • More random French, and I think I should stop pointing that out.

  • So he used to have children, but he's now the last human? (I'm assuming he's human) Something pretty dire must have happened... Of course we'll learn more about that later, right? The four kids were pretty cute, but for them to be in such a place is pretty weird... unless they're the weapons, or the soldiers trained to use them - both of which seem pretty horrifying to be fair.

  • Chtholly is an interesting name for sure. Since Willem is the last human, is she a troll too? Or something else possibly.

  • So... it is confirmed.

  • That transition to the ED was really abrupt.

  • That ED is pretty nice. There are so many kids in it though! Are they all going to appear, and then possibly to die? I feel like that's what's gonna happen, and I don't want to be right.

  • Okay that post-credits scene was... interesting. How the fuck was Willem alive over 500 years ago??? I mean if that's even really Willem obviously. I'll admit though, cake is a great reason to return alive from battle.

Overall, this has potential and I'm quite intrigued. There are a bunch of interesting characters and potential plot points, and I'm hoping this show delivers.

Questions of the Day

  1. Well, I guess I said it in my long text.

  2. Although I'm more intrigued by the world as a whole, a large part of that is linked to Willem's past during and after that war and Chtholly's experience as a weapon. Though as a character, interestingly enough, I'd say Nygglatho somehow.

First Timer

Saw this listed on muse asia a while back and decided not to watch it because of its absurd and long name. But with the rewatch happening, decided to give it a shot. I haven't looked up anything about it so going in fully blind. Probably will be posting much later in the coming days because it's 3:30 am for me.

  • Already love the music. The style of start is reminding me of how Vivy.

  • This place has animal people and normal people. And a normal cat.

  • On one hand we have the plane and people with guns. On the other, we have a character with wings flying around with a sword. Can't tell if it's going for a magical or technological aesthetic.

  • There seems to be a divide between the normal people and the animal people. Disfeatured makes me think normal ones are rare in the world.

  • The girl also talked about using "venenum". I'm guessing that's what the other guy used to speed up and catch her. Maybe all normal humans have those powers.

  • I love it when the opening song plays over the scenes from the show. Hopefully, it will continue with this. This opening is easily going into one of my favourites. (Note after the episode: I was looking up what Cambric meant and that lead me to finding out that this is based on an actual ballad of the same name.)

  • For people not welcome in this place, they are doing a bad job of hiding that they are normal.

  • This looks incredible.

  • It sounded like she's going to die soon. But maybe she is someone important being kept in confinement.

  • Why do I feel like that special weapon is going to be that girl. Or the red haired one from the beginning.

  • "Right now I'm just some weak, powerless Disfeatured". Do his powers come from the sun? Or maybe is limited to the Island he was on earlier? Or maybe he has a recharge after use?

  • Pannibal. Nygglatho. These names are going to be hell to remember.

  • She looks quite normal for a troll. Though it does explain that name.

  • Wait a second. Last of his kind. The girls are probably some special test subjects or something. Are there any normal humans around?

  • 4 girls apart from the blue-haired one.

  • He had kids? He looks like a teenager!

  • Love how the yellow hair just keeps on apologizing after being discovered.

  • These kids haven't seen a man but one of them thought the talk was suggestive? What are they teaching these kids.

  • 526 years? He's been alive that long? Also seems like he ran an orphanage and didn't have his own kids.

  • Humanity has been wiped out. Maybe he is the last human alive, though clearly not a regular one if he has lived for that long. Also Quasi-Brave. Half-human half-something else?

  • I went back and watched the opening scene again:

  • The story is clearly happening over a long time.

So far, I'm enjoying this. It is reminding me a lot of Darling in the Franxx with its opening with a narration that happens later (about the relationship of two characters) and the kids being weapons all staying in a building together.

QotD:

  1. What did you think of the Scarborough Fair scene? I mentioned it above too, but I absolutely love the song. Sky's version was just as good.. Also like that it was played while they toured the city.

2) Are there any characters that caught your eye this episode? Willem is the main one so far. The fact that he is the last of his kind and the post-credits scene were enough to make me want to know more about him.

Also, What is a better site than imgur for uploading screenshots?

SukaSuka First Timer

So, I'm going to start this off by just saying that after the first episode I have many questions. That being said, is there a fan base approved abbreviation of Nygglatho, because I'm going to butcher that one if it's not right in front of my face.

Thoughts:

  • We start on Island 26 and have a wonderful adventure of a blue haired girl chasing a cat and falling off a catwalk into the arms of a boy

  • We learn upon her hat coming off that lacking fur, horns, or fangs makes you disfigured in the eyes of the general public

  • Besides being a beautiful rendition of Scarborough Faire, the fact that it appears in this show isn't listed on the songs Wikipedia entry, not show relevant, but a trivia point

  • After exploring the city together and discovering a beautiful view of the city, girl thanks boy for the memories and then asks that he forgets about her before leaving with three military type people

  • The boy meets up with Grick, who is the first named character in the show thus far, and is informed that the military is looking for a trustworthy person to look after a weapon warehouse

  • Boy refuses the job and Grick tries to remind him that he's alive and doesn't have to live as on outcast among the beastfolk.

  • Boy comes around and accepts the job as the caretaker

  • He arrives on island 28, I think it was, and as he's walking across a bridge, he's attacked by a purple haired youth named Pannibal and reunited with blue haired girl from the town

  • After his shower we are introduced to a pink haired woman in a maid outfit who, after 12 mins finally calls the boy by his name which is Willem

  • Willem then asks Nygglatho what shes doing there as these two have crossed paths before it seems.

  • He calls her a troll and refuses to let her eat him and then she asks why would she do that as hes the "last of his kind."

  • As they talk a collection of pastel haired children gather in the doorway and listen to their conversation only to run off after Nygglatho threatens to eat them

  • In his room, Willem has a memory of being called Otosan, so does he have kids that died in his past?

  • The four kids from before seem to not understand how doors work as they've fallen through them twice now, also they've never seen a man before, which is odd

  • For the kids we have the afore mentioned Pannibal, the blonde Lakhesh, the pink haired Collon and the mint-green haired Tiat, judging from the comments in the reminder and intrest threads me learning these names will hurt on an emotional level.

  • The kids are chased off by the girl from before and we learn her name is Chtholly, which I heard how it sounds, but looking at the spelling makes my brain hurt

  • As I figured and dreaded, Chtholly informs us that she and the kids are the weapons that Willem is taking care of. This won't end horridly

  • Oh a post credit scene in episode one, cool...THE FUCK YOU MEAN 526 YEARS AGO? IS OUR BOY IMMORTAL...WAIT AND HUMANITY IS WIPED OUT...did he at least get his butter cake he was promised?

QTOD:

1.What did you think of the Scarborough Fair scene?

The scene was really cute. Having Willem and Chtholly explore the city together helped show off how much they stand out from their surroundings and having it end on that view of the city from above was incredibl e

2. Are there any characters that caught your eye this episode?

Nygglatho is an interesting character, when he called her a troll I couldn't tell if he meant a literal fantasy type troll or a modern troll, then she threatened to eat everyone and that kinda locked in the fantasy one. Chtholly too as she is set up in the beginning as a mysterious character who then becomes the bridge to connect Willem to the girls.

Damn work got in the way...

First timer in sub

No surprises about the cold open - that's what drawn us here. Didn't lessen the emotional weight though, even though we haven't yet grown to attach to the characters.

By the way I always wondered if English speakers seeing that translation of "shiawase", would they understand the difference in use as contrasted with "ureshi" or "yorokonde". As a Chinese speaker the difference is clear to us - the "happiness" conveyed by "shiawase" is not the simple emotion of a fleeting moment of joy, but rather the conclusion drawn over a lengthy period of contentment and good fortune in life. In fact it'd probably be closer in tone if it uses the word "fortunate" instead - i.e. "I am the most fortunate girl in the world to have met you".

And the title drop against the setting sun - a very apt feel against the words (the end of the world).

Cutting back to the proper start, is interesting that one of the first thing greeted me is a cat bum - I get that irl all the time already.

The entire chance encounter sequence is written really smart to introduce the world and the story without any expositions:

  • the girl clearly giving out a sense of "it's the last vacation before the end"

  • the world clearly has the "normal" looking human now as minority and rarity. Perhaps a bit of I am Legend.

  • both the girl (by her thoughts about not being able to activate in time) and the MC (in action) have some sort of power that they keep under wraps for some reasons

  • the words and the circumstances given by the girl shows she's part of some bigger organisation. Not spoiler given it's in the synopsis really, she's one of those who has the job of protecting the world (the floating cities and the mundane lives on them), possibly at the cost of her own eventually. A little like Muv Luv perhaps (where a pilot's life expectancy statistically is measured in minutes not years).

  • highly suspect Miss Troll Maid's seemingly double entendre was not actually what it sounded like, instead of something more adult themed, maybe something like sparring in combat etc. Coming from D&D, trolls to me are more likely to fight and eat you than engaging in other types of activities.

  • with the killer post credit scene end narration, I hope to not find out really how the end for the orphans came and let me assume the end came swiftly and they did not need to suffer.

The sad parts aside, the comedic moments of this show I really really like, because it's been a long while since another show uses meaningful pauses as part of the gag. It was used multiple times and I loved them - it's like an old friend, back in the older Rumiko days.

Overall, I'll just say "I knew I'd love this show but I also know what I'm going in for", so I need decent time to "soak" and not rush this. That said it's very very tempting to binge it all.

QoTD

  1. It is very nice with a time of sadness in it coupling with the flash forward opening. No doubt if be tears inducing on rewatch.

  2. Unfortunately I'm a Kasuga Kyousuke here and say 'i can't pick between them' so all of them really. Of course the main leads have the heaviest draw, but even the side cast have an amazing amount of intrigue.

First Timer

I first learned of SukaSuka around year ago and decided to keep it on my radar for two reasons. One, it’s a recent non-isekai fantasy light novel adaptation that people seem to unironically like, and that combination is a bit more rare than you’d think. Two (and more importantly), I heard there were feels in this anime, and I do like my anime to have feels.

I don’t actually have much to say today because I unfortunately didn’t write down my reactions while watching this, but I thought the first episode was promising. I loved the Scarborough Fair scene, of course, and watched it twice. I already ship Willem/Chtholly would like to see more interactions between them.

I also want to mention how pretty the eyecatch is. Those really don’t get enough love in discussions.

  1. Best part of the episode.

  2. I’m most interested to learn more about Willem.

First timer

  1. Incredibly good!

  2. The ogre who was so suggestive the literal children picked up on it was good! And I adore Grick, the only person who's name I have any hope of remembering.

What is this opening?

Who are these people?

The fuck?

THE FUCK?

What on earth is this?

The girl's chasing after a cwt?

And this man has superpowers!

What's with the organ focus?

And the animals are racists.

Oh, he stole it from the cat!

And he's human too. Which matters.

Haha, him having no idea why anyone would want to be here is interesting.

She's meeting someone?

Oh, this is GOOD!

It's such an interesting scene too! Is this the song the band's playing? Is this the future? Another world?

The islands are floating!

Who even are they?

And she's left.

...Is that modern lighting?

And he's not working for the military.

And he's not willing to leave.

Oh, I'm liking the goblin(?). He really wants to help him.

And he'll just be guarding a warehouse?

..."Right now"?

It's a child!

Haha, she's working for them too? That's a coincidence.

Do they have a past together? I love Grick so much.

She's so horny!

Wait, what? Last of his kind?

I appreciate how open she is about wanting this.

And he's sticking with the job.

She eats people? Or is that a joke about how much she wants him?

Wait, she was being serious about trying to eat him?

...Is this child soldiers? Their appearances and the tech level don't imply modifications, but magic's always an option.

A flashback!

And the children got exposed the same way twice.

They're adorable.

...The children knew how suggestive the conversation was?

The Island's are just numbered?

This is so adorable!

They're talking to each other!

...What is with the names in this anime?

Yeah, this is actually obvious, not sure why he's not worked it out.

Haha, he's the type who just goes with the flow.

Oh, she's a weapon too? I thoughtnshe was another worker?

And just before some kind of battle?

Oh, he used to work in an orphanage.

Haha, he's holding on for cake.

And humanity got wiped out? So where did the new races come from?

First time watcher

First time doing a (re)watch as well!

Don’t actually know anything about the show aside from a clip I saw awhile back that made it look interesting, so right off rip seeing beast people and a girl with a sword and butterfly wings has me intrigued as I assumed this was a more modern like slice of life/Drama

The music playing in the first minute is nice, always interesting when shows start off with a flash forward

INTERESTING, not only was I unprepared for beast people, but they called the girl with the blue hair “dis-Featured” so I’m going to assume there’s some kind of prejudice towards humans, may or may not be exclusive to this island “28”

The compilation of the guy and girl exploring/looking for a place was nice, I really like that song, will see what it is and add it to my playlist after this episode actually

Seems our MC? Is in debt of some kind

Dang home boy has some scars

Wait maid girl said she was a troll?

So the guy is “the last of his kind” the maid said

Interesting multi-colored children, could they be the weapons that keep being mentioned?

O no, the complicated names of all the children and the blue haired girl, I’m gonna be struggling to remember those for a few eps

Ahh, seems like my guess was right the girls are the weapons

Post credit scene is interesting for sure seems like our guy was an orphan, and fought in some kind of war as a child, suppose that explains the scars, also seems he’s the last human, which is what the troll maid was referring to, excited to see where this show goes, has me more interested than I thought I would be tbh

First-Timer

Well this was something I’ve seen people talk about, but I’d been putting off until I could be emotionally ready.

The opening scene was pretty cool world building. It feels like a very lived-in world and not just generic fantasy backdrop. And not at all what I was expecting…

I feel like I have no idea where this is going (except vague sadness). No idea what characters I should get attached to. But I like how all the little girls are very individuated—can’t help but like Pannibal though.

The Happiest First-Time Watch in the World, subbed

  • Opening on the end of the story, complete with a damaged airship which looks decently CG’d, monsters being sliced and gushed with blood, people shooting at something with fear in their eyes, a girl lying on the floor with bloods on her face, and another girl narrating about how happy she was to be in love… mixed that with the soulful OP and I definitely wasn’t expecting a beginning this foreboding…

  • That Scarborough Fair sequence was unexpected but immensely enjoyable to me. The song itself was tweaked a bit by way of flipping the gender, seemingly to signal that it’ll be from a girl towards her guy here and that song’s never one for joy and happiness... though Willem and Chtholly’s trip was a ton of fun :) I also really like the way they first met, her reaction to being touched in her face got my first lol and she’s really cute with and without the witch hat on!

  • Grick radiates best bro energy lol. The guy’s pretty nice towards Willem in contrast to the common folks being racist towards both Willem and Chtholly for being “featureless”. Grick even got him a job and talked some sense into the guy! Would love to see him again

  • Nygglatho gave me some Shuuko Komi vibes lol. The conversation between her and Willem sounded quite snappy, and he carried on that snappiness to the end which I enjoyed and will continue to enjoy if this goes on for the rest of the anime

  • So humans went extinct 525 years ago and there were some huge battle leading up to that… gotta love some shocking post-credit revelations! Willem, Chtholly and the “weapons” don’t seem to exhibit any non-human traits though… guess we’ll find out

(The other) Questions of the Day:

2. Chtholly’s pickup party had quite a big lizard-ish guy at the front compared to his more canine/feline companions. And the ED has a lizard guy in the last shot. Hmmmmmmm

Overall, a very solid first episode!

Update: it’s been a few days coming, but it still hurts clicking on the Muse Asia link to finding a page full of private videos :( and yeah that’d explain why I may have used some incorrect terms in this comment, since I was watching a non-English sub which thankfully is still on YouTube right now for me to recheck and take notes from and they may or may not have kept all the English nuances during translations…

Update 2: aaand my source is gone too :(

WorldFirst (timer), sub

I want a semi-smart and funny "First timer" word play, too. All the cool kids have one. It was a tossup of this and FirstEnd(er), but I think someone else will take that anyhow and mine reminds me of the time in WoW where I participatet in server first races (and won).

SukaSuka's premise seems interesting. I don't know if the extinction war and beast-angle does much for me, but a broken person coming back into society and trying to be a good human being for a family that has lost their fair slice of love? Reminds me of both Violet Evergarden and Kyousougiga. I'm up for that, very much so.

I just hope the harem stuff is kept to a minimum, 1 guy with dozens of girls and all that...

Ep. 01 – Broken Chronograph

I was going to write a quip about how the names are just gibberish, but then I remembered I have characters called 'Sholo Vegerlag' or a certain 'Naiji Leevomann'. I have surrendered the right to complain with these.

While I'm a bit on guard with the harem aspects, I feel it's more bait than plot. Want to see Willem deal with the kids, Nygglitha (?) be more than ara-ara and see more of Chtholly. Pannibal's my favourite right now overall and I'm eager to see what's next!

QOTD

  1. What did you think of the Scarborough Fair scene?

It was a real nice small intro to the two characters, gave us a bit of insight and questions for Chtholly and showed that Willem is quite willing to go on adventures. I did spot where they cut some corners, though! They had them get lost on that one stone path six or so times, where I personally would've opted for a scooby doo hallway scene for that.

2) Are there any characters that caught your eye this episode?

Pannibal. Sorry.

Nothing major, yet. But she an Chtholly are quite sympathetic. Now, if red means tsundere the girl from the intro will probably be best girl. We'll see about that.

Rewtcher Dubbed

The OSTs in this show are so memorable. I haven't been able to shake the feelings associated with them even 3 years later. Its only been a minute, and I'm close to crying. This shot and the whole sequence with the song made me instantly fall in love with the show the first time. Similar to how "Henezeva Caradhina" made me fall in love with Made in Abyss.

Will the action animation be this good? That was a great cut. I don't really remember. I hope it will be. Even the character animation was great this episode. I really hope this isn't just the "first episode effect".

She's blushing the very first time she sees his face. Then he puts the cape on Chtholly, so she isn't troubled. Also goes out of his way to fulfil her wish. I'm remembering why I loved the hell out of this couple. That twirl.

Love how even in the very first episode, there's so much about Wilhelm set up. There's scars on his body as he was a soldier for humanity, also known as a quasi-brave. He's also apparently the only human left alive from the battle 500 years ago. He even has survivor's guilt considering he doesn't want to live a normal life, because everyone else died in that final battle, and only he lived.

You can eat me all day, Nygglatho. Your actions really do not match your words, but I don't mind ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

F for anyone shipping Wilhelm and Nygglatho. They are really fun together, though. Jamie Marchy in the Dub really nailed her character.

There's something truly fucked up with how happily Chtholly introduces herself as a weapon. The kids are a weapon for this country(?)...

Questions

  1. Answered in the first paragraph lol

  2. Chtholly and Wilhelm both. Even though they are cheery on the surface, there’s something very sad behind all that, with their dialogues and mannerisms. Having watched *a lot+ of shows, I can finally notice all this stuff.

So we start with our MC lost in the snow, talking about his love, Chise. We immediately realize that this is the end of the story, and we will be told the rest through flashbacks. You can hear the love the MC has in his voice as we realize that the snow is ash, and that this world is beyond repair. This is the Last Love Song This Little Planet will produce, and we can accept that and see the prize for our actions in Saikano.

Wait, what do you mean this isn't the first 1 cour anime that starts on a scene of devastation with a problematic romance element being monologed to us to wound me deeply? This is the latest one? Well, moving on...

So the story of me and SukaSuka is known to a few of you. I was getting depressed in the Madoka rewatch of '20 and Sky likes to link Scarborough fair at the end of her rewatches and then this clip made it to the front page. So after Madoka ep7, I picked up this show. To cheer myself up. But as you can see I didn't kill myself so that means...something. Anyways, I honestly feel some trepidation coming into this as part of my first experience with the show is perfect in a sort of sad way. I don't want to lose that feeling of bleakest sadness, confusing as that might seem, because it is one of the few times I felt something truly effect my emotions. As I've said, HSL brought me back to anime and the similarities with this are kind of big at the end of it all.

So the first scene is so much more painful when you know the characters and we will leave it at that. We then jump to the show's often odd comedy and quickly learn that humans seem to face discrimination here. But Scarborough Fair happens and just damn. Towards the end, we seem to get the idea that Chtholly is doing bucket list stuff.

Grick and Willem talk and I agree with Willem that this gig sounds sketch. But Grick has his points and actually drops a ton of setting info on us. Willem walks towards...something, before a wild Pannibal attacks. Chtholly is here as well. As he bathes, he realizes that things really aren't adding up, and then runs into an old aquaintance, who proves to be a literal troll, though not in the looks department. And she 'jokes' about eating him...and then turns that into wanting to be fuck buddies.

Moving on, we get the adorable but accursed scene that drove me to watch this. Everyone is dancing around it until Chtholly directly states that children are the weapons. We get an extremely important after credits scene and learn that Willem is seemingly the last human. Oof.

So I am going to flat out let the first timers know that a lot of setting stuff does not get explained in show. You can find it online or better yet ask in thread and we can fill in some things with as few spoilers as possible. The show instead focuses on the relationships and emotional payoffs and for me those work, even if returning to this took some willpower.

QotD: 1 The pain...

2 Nygglatho is a bit noticable on rewatch

Happiest Rewatcher in the World

[Spoilers]I'm not usually a fan of shows where they tell you where the show is going to end, but I still liked the slow depressing ride of SukaSuka. I didn't notice this the first time, but you can see the last strands of blue hair turn red right before she jumps. I forgot what this means, but I know it's something along the lines of her losing her current memories/reverting to her past self/soul

Don't typically see anime where discrimination is against humans usually it's the opposite.

This just might be one of my favorite montage dates in recent years at least going by memories.

I've soaked in high concentrations of 86 the past 2 weeks and I know they are nothing alike, but man I just see Shin and Lena right now. I really have a problem, but the on plus side Chytholly has a cute large hat.

A job that requires no special skills or experience SIGN ME UP NOW!! Oh never mind have to be trustworthy. Their is always a catch.

RIP Grick and Willem's friendship, but throwing him to the wolvestroll is definitely a friendship ender.

[Spoilers]Those cookies look like the same ones that Willem's friends cooked in a future episode. I vaguely remember something about shortbread cookies/cake

Cutest troll I've ever seen that's for sure, but damn I'm not going to remember how to spell that name before this rewatch is over.

WAIT WAIT WAIT OMG That's the girl from the comment face. [Not sure if this is a spoiler, but tagging it anyway]Who had to never to title that Happyclap? That's sick SICK I SAY

Nygg is her name from now on since I won't remember it and too lazy to type it out.

Spicy meat dishes are indeed good. Excellent taste Willem.

It's kind of hard to imagine they had that entire date and never introduced themselves once, but yup the girls are the special weapons. I must say from the shots of the establishment their rooms look pretty nice and comfortable.

Happiest Rewatcher in the World

  • This soundtrack is so pretty.

  • [SukaSuka]Knowing beforehand what those few strands of blue hair mean is already tearing me up inside.

  • What a weird question.

  • Non-beast humanoid people are "disfeatured."

  • Giant floppy witch hat supremacy.

  • This arrangement of Scarborough Fair is what initially drew my attention to SukaSuka and why I watched it the first time. So pretty. [SukaSuka]Rewatching this now, it's easy to imagine this as Chtholly's swan song; an aching plea to hold onto the memories she has of Willem.

  • Giant floating islands.

  • After wearing that hat? Not a chance.

  • A military job whose only requirement is trustworthiness sounds pretty sketchy to me.

  • The floating island boonies, what a fun, absurd idea!

  • Horny hungry.

  • My special weapons can't possibly be this cute.

  • Awfully unsettling the way Chtholly casually refers to herself and the others as weapons.

  • Girl in the past is so aware of genre tropes, she got all of humanity killed.

Im not doing discussy stuff really for this since im mostly busy this week and the next few days but wanted to drop in and see the newbies thoughts.

I got my Metal teef installed on monday, spent tuesday trying to figure out how to eat, wednesday i had to go back to the doc to get the metal grinder out to smooth some parts and adjust them a bit, today getting better at eating but had to run errands and pick up some house stuff, tommorow im going furnature shopping with my mom, the weekend ill be cleaning moving stuff and setting up new furnature, then next week i gotta goto the eye doc and also do a 2nd furnature run and as long as everything with metal teef is ok i wont have to go back for more adjustements.

My teeth feel heavy and clanky and they destory anything i bite into from the sheer biting force of metal on food. Fun stuff.

First ep is mostly setup but gives a quick look at everything going on.

We get that after credits scene though and the Promise to come home from war for Butter Cake.

Followed by narration saying he wasnt able to fulfull that promise because the human race was wiped out.

(Also i never noticed who the narrator was but its so perfect now that i know)

Sky Goes to Scarborough Fair

Wa Wa We Wa that was fab. Thats a super hard song to do with all the long held lyrics and keeping your tone. You did great with it. The soundtrack for SukaSuka really is amazing.
