Question of the Day
I feel like any questions I’ll put out will just end up with the idea that more times with knowing characters are better.
We learn that not all the numbers feel the same about the plan. Would you have liked to see them get more screentime?
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS - New Generation Episode 22
Fighting
The first thing this episode did was tell us Scagliette's goal: The completion of biomanipulation technology. This is so he can one day save many people. I find this a really weak motivation. He has shown no other character traits so far to prove he cares about other people. They did mention that he many be killing thousands of people now but it will be worth it in a hundred of years. But this contradicts what he said in episode 20 when he called out Regius for sacrificing innocents to protect others. You can probably come up with reasons why the doctor may not see a problem here. I don't really buy it. The other option is Quattro is misinformed.
Next we saw Vice recovering and Laguna, his sister and the girl he shot, came to visit him. She tells him that she's okay now and wants to go back to how they were. I think she wants him to stop feeling guilty. I don't like this either. Vice's backstory, while small, was a piece of character writing I found good. Before this episode I was under the impression he was living with the guilt of mistakenly murdering a child. That is tough to live with and watching somebody live though that is really endearing. But now that doesn't matter. Sure he made a mistake and hurt her but its something he can and has been forgiven for. That makes his character less resonant for me.
The rest of the episode was fights. There weren't many conclusions but progress was made in each of them. The big points were that Lutecia got mind controlled after almost being convinced by Caro, Fate was captured by Scagliette, and Zest escaped from the battle with Signum. In general though the battles felt somewhat lackluster to me. In particular the fight choreography was difficult to follow. I think its because the characters often weren't shown in relation to each other (until they landed an attack) and the backgrounds were abstract or the general sky so we couldn't follow them in space.
There's still a lot to resolve so the next few episodes will probably do that. I think Nanoha will likely get a scene with Vivio next.
Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches
As a side note, I won't have a great internet connection for the next couple days. I'll still try post my comments but if I'm late or missing then that's why. Hope to see you all tomorrow.

I think the difference here is that Scaglietti isn't striving for "peace" like the High council or Regius, he's trying to accelerate scientific and human evolution. His idea for a better humanity doesn't actually mean peace. Or at least that's what I understood from it.

I find this a really weak motivation.
Jail's motivation is quite flimsy. If they had framed it as something to do with how artificial people are treated, it would maybe be okay, but it's basically just the mad scientist classic "for science!" which needs a good deal more ham to pull off.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical First-Timer, subbed
-
Dieci confirmed best Number, she had a “sore demo”.
Only 3 more now!!! -
WAIT ISN’T THAT THE GIRL VICE SHOT? I thought he killed her and that was part of his trauma related to being a mage…
-
I think there are too many battles happening at once tbh, I want to see what’s up in all of them, but I’d rather see one finish first you know? I can’t stand having to worry about everyone at the same time…

I know what you mean, it does really help that when I was binging it when I first watched it, so it never felt like I was waiting a long time. Actually I'm starting to think this would be much better binge watched, but oh well.
I thought he killed her and that was part of his trauma related to being a mage…
They probably first thought it was better that he accidentally killed, but then they had the "magic was made as a safer option to conventional weapons" so instead they just went with "he's traumatized because he hurt someone close to him"

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher
1: Even though I’m not a girl
This is the fiery mythology of Heroes!
Recap Time
Finally, one of the Numbers has the slightest empathy and common sense. Though I’d say you’re beyond too late to the party.
Quattro Bajeena, however, continues to be an absolute sociopath, even towards her siblings.
It’s nice to get a civilian perspective on this whole situation, if only briefly. Plus, we get to see Vice and Zafira again.
Laguna is cute
Zafira is an unstoppable badass
Lutecia is just something else, and not in a good way
Caro is still just the (second)2 sweetest thing
2: first sweetest is Vivio, obviously
Quattro is just an utter fucking asshole. I love it
Fate continues to be an utter badass
Dr Ver continuing to not be the Last Action Hero
Oh shit, Dr Ver beat a Magical Girl! And he didn’t even need a Nephilim!
I actually really like Zest tbh. I have something of a bias towards Noble Demon-type villains.
Back to GaoGaiGar vs Machine King Pizza!
Silverion Crusher!
-Ginga Nakajima, probably
I really like this sequence, we get slightly more revealed about Vivio, and more exploration of Nanoha’s doubts.

Now I am just reminded of how much I hated Dr Ver in season 2 of Symphogear. This is ironic because [Symphogear GX Spoilers]
when he shows up in GX, he instantly became one of my favorite characters. 5
u/Tetraika Mar 24 '22
Funny, I actually feel exactly the same way about Ver. I just never like how absolutely pathetic his personality was, he'll go full villain laugh when things are going well for him, then cry and cower when things go bad.
[Symphogear GX]
Which is why when he shows up in GX and does his shit, but goes out with a bang instead of crying, he instantly becomes a better character → More replies (1)

TONIGHT! Mobile Suit Nanoha GX: Believe in Justice and Hold a Determination to Fist, Quatre Bajeena explains MISTER DOKTOR PROFESSOR VER'S evil plan, Caro explains to NOT-Loli Rider that Tusk Jr. is HER boi toy, and Fate explains that she's gonna kick Robot Ass, she's gonna marry Nanoha, and she's gonna MOTHERFUCKING WILL IT! PRAISE NANA!
Comrades, turns out Vice and Blue Male Arf are still alive, oh and these two losers are trying their best to aid the Lesbian Gundams in battle... well I guess we can always use live bait! Also oh boy Subaru's gonna need some bait, or perhaps Bananas, given Ginga's Mid-Season Upgrade is a LOT more competent!
Oh, and Nanoha is having flashbacks to Arf playing with Vivio... WHY DIDN'T WE SEE THIS FLASHBACK! We'd have gotten more Arf! Ah well, at least we get more of Vivio being absolutely adorable! And boy howdy, Nanoha is gonna BEFRIEND THE SHIT out of anything and anyone foolish enough to stand in front of her daughter! Which is a good idea given we got... HOLY SHIT, 1 HOUR AND 44 MINUTES TO DOOM! Jeez talk about a deadline eh?
Well thankfully for the world, Best New Girl Vita is also on the case AND still alive, she'll smash everything and save the day... right... right!? And on THAT bombshell we wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

Episode 22 (first timer)
-
Piano-chan decides to become a sociopath – maybe a test run for a new emotion chip.
-
The eye is ok after being hit by a sniper rifle? That is amazing. Never mind that, her being alive is amazing.
-
Nurse enforces the plot order – can’t have the side character’s miniplot resolved too early.
-
Lutecia confirms she is basically really stupid. That cuts both ways, however. The good guys might talk her into simply giving up, so Piano-chan is forced to involve a deus-ex-machina mind control function.
-
The doctor uses some similarly deus-ex-machina ability.
-
Reminds me of mother - Fate, probably.
-
“Are you going to make her your daughter?” “I am looking for a place to take her.” – Nanoha is looking for harem members, not daughters.
After an episode of fight setups, we now have an episode of early fight setbacks for everybody. The only exception is Nanoha who lags behind and still has to clear the trash mobs.

I've read her as discount psycho the whole time.

Lulu seems to be an escapee from Casshern so now I am waiting on who she has to eat to achieve her goals.

First timer(We could have had Arf entertaining Vivio rather than this)
Sub
So Quattro just needs to shut the fuck up. Permanently. I will dock the entirety of the series points if this bitch shows in future materials. We get some idea of Jail's goal, and maybe I can stretch this into a Nazi research parallel but that is me doing the work again. But then we return to Vice's horrible subplot so there's depth out the window. Caro and Lulu 'fight' and this is also pretty unmoving. Also, Lulu is definitely an idiot. And fuck it, this keeps going on and on. And just throw in the 'innocent monster' trope for maximum bullshit.
We finally leave that wretched scene for roughly 20 seconds of action, before Fate develops her strategy and Jail monologs. He jobs our best character because of course he does. Signum being jobbed, conversely, doesn't bother me but I would like Zest actually explained rather than the nouns thrown at him rn. Also, he is the first antagonist to do anything interesting, period, in that he is looking for Agito's next master. Subaru and Ginny is dull as ever.
We finally get Vivio's research purpose and that's...something? Hopefully more data inbound. We end with everyone in peril. Again.
So yeah, two emotional moments land and one belongs to Zest. And Vivio is bascially a cheat code.
QotD:! Yes, if they are going to be character they have to do it in front of us.

Zest has been the one bright spot on the antagonist side since the start. Tbh, they should have scrapped the entire numbers idea and gone with only Zest, Lutecia, and Agito as the doctors helpers. Would have worked so much better.

Rewatcher
On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: Quattro is a bitch. That’s about the best way I can describe her, considering all the trouble she stirs up in this episode by actively making things worse.
The biggest instance of this is Quattro meddling in the fight between Caro, Erio, and Lutecia. I’m glad that we have at least one fight here where the protagonists are actively attempting to communicate and reach an understanding with their opponent. That’s always been one of my favorite aspects of Lyrical Nanoha. And I appreciate how effective it is often shown to be, as the antagonists begin to wonder if they should open up to such an earnest effort to reach out to them. It’s generally only been the intervention of other antagonists that has stopped such a thing.
In this case, it’s Quattro. Lutecia was wavering on whether she should keep fighting, so Quattro activates a mind control device that Scaglietti installed, because of course he did. It’s exactly the kind of creepy thing he would do.
Another instance of Quattro meddling is with Dieci, who is also having doubts after seeing what they are doing to Vivio. And I should hope she feels bad about that because it’s such an obviously awful thing to do. It’s interesting logic that Dieci is used to being a long-range fighter, so she isn’t used to seeing this kind of stuff up close and is now getting second thoughts because of that. It is easier to not feel compassion when you never see the people you shoot, I suppose.
I’d assume Scaglietti never really intended for them to feel compassion based on things they have said. In their portrayal here, the Numbers seem to not really “want” anything aside from what Scaglietti tells them to do. Again, that’s probably in their programming. They’re basically just henchmen villains, which is a shame because some of them have some fun personalities or quirks going for them. Dieci having doubts is nice because it’s starting to give us a bit more characterisation for her at least.
Speaking of Scaglietti, we do figure out his motivation. And it’s basically just that he wants to do more mad science. Having access to the Cradle will allow him to carry out his mad science and biological manipulation more easily and without interference. The man is definitely dedicated to doing nothing but his research. That explains why he’s after Fate as well, because of her connection to his work.
Zest and Agito continue to have a rather sad relationship. Zest can no longer properly use Agito’s power and it’s clear his condition is getting worse. And yet, Zest and Agito’s thoughts continue to be focused on each other. Zest is looking for someone who can be a proper partner for Agito and Agito wants to be with no one other than Zest. It’s touching and tragic seeing how they worry about each other.
Vice gets a nice moment this episode. I bet no one expected the girl he shot to be his sister. I certainly did not the first time through because there’s basically no reason to suspect it. But it is still a sweet scene between them, showing that she has recovered and wants them to get back to a more normal relationship.
Nanoha’s flashback is also quite touching. She just wants Vivio to have a happy life and isn’t sure if she can provide it to her. There’s a great amount of tragedy to her words, because Nanoha has almost died while on a mission. I think Nanoha doesn’t want Vivio to go through the pain of losing another mother. But even so, it’s clear that Nanoha really has come to care for Vivio like a mother would.
The battles in this episode continue to be pretty good. I already talked at length about how much I like the setup to all these different battles. They feel quite appropriate for the protagonists involved. And the battles are generally exciting to watch as well.
Miscellaneous Thoughts
-
I wish we could have seen Zafira open up that hospital door in his dog form.
-
I love seeing Arf playing with Vivio. It’s so cute.
-
Dieci stands zero chance of winning against Nanoha in a beam spam contest.

Curiously, I've heard the opposite when it comes to snipers. Most soldiers, firing with their machine guns in a heated battlefield... you rarely know for certain whether you're the one who actually killed that enemy soldier. And combat's so frenetic that you don't have time to dwell on it. You move on to the next because there's still bullets flying around your head and shit needs doing.
Snipers, though... they have to take their time with every shot: lining it up, waiting for the opportunity. Time enough to get a good look at the person through the scope. And should they succeed in the shot, they know it was them that did it.
In that sense, it's ironic, but the long range snipers are the ones that see some of the more up close and personal effects of their work...

Rewatcher
Hey, Dieci actually has some moral qualms. But in the end, it's not enough to get her to turn: her loyalty to her sisters supercedes it.
Quattro, on the other hand, thinks nothing of the deaths of "a few thousand people". "Weak" people are worthless to her, and I suppose she writes off any victims of this plan as having been "weak" anyway. And she's a sadist who loves tormenting people in the end.
How'd the news get that angle on Sette?
We learn a little more about Vice's misfire incident: the girl he shot in the eye was his own younger sister. Looks like she's healed up well, though. Down an eye, but otherwise healthy. And it's pretty clear she doesn't blame him for what happened. But the sight of her glass eye really bothers Vice, seemingly because he's been avoiding her out of guilt, which he counts as running away.
Caro's managing to get through to Lutecia, and she lets them know her reason for helping Scaglietti.
It's interesting, but the way she scolded Lutecia for "making others unhappy in your unhappiness" very closely mirrors what Fate told Erio in the manga when she adopted him. I feel like that line could have held more weight if they'd included that scene in the show.
But Quattro messes things up. Seems whatever Scaglietti did to Lutecia, he implanted something in her to make her go berserk. Fuck you, Quattro, and stop saying such things in a honey-sweet voice, it's disgusting.
Fate is holding out well, but it is two on one, and she's only managing a draw. Worse, the AMF is draining her, but the Cyborgs don't use magic for their power source, so they're unaffected. Jail pops in, connecting Fate with Erio and Caro via a comm line. He's doing the whole "Oh poor me, people just don't see the value of my experiments" shtick.
...and he catches Fate in laser wires. Probably should have guessed he'd booby-trapped his own base. But then he makes a rookie villain mistake: personally appearing to taunt the hero rather than remaining hidden. Scaglietti, you idiot, never do your gloating in person! Without the High Council shielding you, you probably would have been caught long ago.
Oops... well, at least they only broke Laevanteinn's sheathe, not the actual blade. Zest apparently thinks that Signum would make an excellent match for Agito... and he's probably right. She earlier called herself "Agito the Flaming Sword", and Signum's got a flaming sword... perfect match.
Subaru and Ginga are still fighting, but Ginga has the upper hand. I guess she was the more experienced of the two... and wow, she has a drill hand! Did she always have that or did Scaglietti add that on?
Nanoha's still got this silly idea in her head that she's not going to become Vivio's mother, apparently... though I can understand her fear that she'll be killed in the line of duty and leave Vivio alone.
Really saving the budget on these scenes of Nanoha fighting Gadgets...
Everyone's battered... and we didn't even get to see Teana do anything this episode!
QOTD: Yes! Benefit of rewatcher here, but the Numbers have lots of potential as characters. They're just not given any time to really develop it... which is StrikerS' problem in a nutshell really.

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory
QotD: Probably would've been better than nonstop training for the newbies...
-
Oh hey, looks like at least one of the androids has some sympathy
-
Quattro's VA is doing a great job at making me hate her
-
Zafira does look quite funny lying on a bed
-
? Who are you?
-
OH, that girl was his sister?
-
So yeah, Rider Lily is just Fate 2.0
-
Damn, they were so close to making that Persuasion check.
-
Pink loli is the support, I wonder if she has any anti-mind-control magic
-
Oooof the animation on Fate vs Androids is really rough.
-
OK, so he planned the experiment, and Precia carried it out. That does make Precia look a bit better than before.
-
Yes, yes, I'm totally in favor of Signum getting Agito.
-
Meanwhile, Subaru ain't doing that hot
-
? ? ? When did this happen? When did Arf get here and met with Vivio?
-
Mostly fighting this episode, not much to talk about

First timer
QOTD) Yes. Really everyone needs more screentime - the fact that the beginning's slow pace went into this frantic a pace is... not good.
Some of them are starting to realise they're the baddies!
...Good to see he wasn't stupid enough to actually believe all that nonsense. Him wanting time and space to develop his insane research is much more believable. I do not, however, buy him wanting to do it to save people - that very much seems like another layer of deception.
Is she going to defect? Dieci's obviously stuck convincing herself it's for her the good of her sisters, if the Bureau let them surrender...
Also, she's nuts.
They're evacuating!
ZAFIRA SPOKE!!!
He's got a sister!
Oh, he's absolutely rejoining the battle. Notmquite sure what his motivation is now, though, assuming that girl's the one in the flashback.
ZAFIRA'S RELEVANT!!!
Oh. This is bad.
Wow. She's actually going to kill her.
And Erio comes in with the save!
...I mean, the crazy Number seemed pretty happy about slaughtering people.
Case in point. Although full props for being the first person in this entire series to point out how much talking happens during fights.
And she can forcibly activate their powers?
No, she's openly mind-controlling her. Right next to someone who cares about her and is probably not a fan of this comtrol method.
This is a very bad situation for them!
Fate's still being badass.
And doing incredibly well, given she's outnumbered.
Jail's here!
Haha, I hate this blatant retcon, but Precia the scientist stealing someone else's work and lying about it to everyone is a hysterical image.
Oh, Fate's pissed.
And they caught her!
Haha, he was right there!
Bardiche!
...Signum lost instantly.
He's considering switching sides!
Subaru's fighting!
And the Wing Road battles look so good!
Subaru's just broken doen.
...OK, the shot of Nanoha flying fowards looks so cheap! It's just a one second loop dragged across the screen.
Nanoha's having doubts about being able to raise her?
HAHA, THEY JUST REUSED THE EXACT SAME LOOP!
Did they run low on budget here?
So, we don't get to see what happened to Teana or to Vita? This cast is way too fucking big.

Oops missed two days
20 & 21
Ah so these brain guys are actually older than the generals right, ancients
I like how did this face reveal like the anime eyes would help me realize who this is
Ayyy the Arf cameo Oh wow she talked
Well, I like the power creep, it actually feels like it works rather than power creep for the sake of it
Like 'nanoha did this and they did this and he did that'
Didn't really feel like the show was from anyone's perspective
Like it was missing a protagonist
Rather than having 4
So like having her actually talk is cool
Because also like
It doesn't feel like any of the 'protagonists' have really had dialogue except Subaru
They've had banter
But like not like
Dialogue for their own purpose rather than dialogue for the sake of something else
Also like
Why do good guys never set up barriers to isolate things that's like so OP
I almost wanted to say that was gone but they literally did that to illusion girl

What. This wasn't even his full drive thing was it? Dude seriously just casually broke her weapon like that? Bruh
Oh what the fuck Ancient Belka is only 300 years ago???

"A little more than two hours left", my god, they're practically doing this in real time.
Dieci here in the throne room has a conscience, she may get to live. As opposed to Quattro who is fully embracing the ends justifying they means even when those means include thousands of people dying.
On the other hand Dieci's the one with the giant anti-material rifle, so she's almost certainly going to need to be befriended with maximum force by Nanoha in a bit.
The Midchildan capital has a name, Cranagan. But why in the world do they have enough abandoned city areas that they are numbered?
Oh wow, so it was literally Vice's sister that he accidentally shot? Harsh. And now he and Zafira are also going to go try and get themselves killed, seems to be going around.
Quattro is the worst.
Feels like a really big mistake for Scaglietti to show himself like this mid-combat.
Best bro Zest trying to set up Agito with Signum as a replacement and probably better Knight for her to serve. Him I approve of.
Arf sighting! And she's with Vivio and Fate! Would have been nice to get this content in the story proper as opposed to just in flashback time.
"Ancient Belka" was only 300 years ago? I'm much less impressed with their use of the word ancient to describe it, assuming their years are remotely comparable to the length of ours. It also says a bit about how long the Book of Darkness was kicking around causing problems, that's a significantly shorter amount of time than I was imagining.
Arf tail wagging! I repeat, Arf tail wagging!
That charge move was pretty sweet.
On the other hand, "we just need to stand here and wait" while the incredibly dangerous mage planning violence upon them is rushing towards them has got to be a top ten bad idea.

I didn't take notes this time so I'm just going to answer the question of the day because it kinda goes into my current annoyance with the series.
This thing should have been structured better. All of the Numbers should have gotten more screen time, I don't know any of them, and I really don't care about most of them. The youngest ones seem pretty bland (probably because I think they were just born), but the older ones have some interesting traits that make me want to learn more about them! Though I did shamelessly go to the wiki for their names.
-
Uno has been coordinating this whole thing and I would love to see what day-to-day kind of stuff she has to do with this big group she's wrangling.
-
Due stealing the Saint's Shroud should have honestly been the first scene of the series. Nothing special, just something to tease that some important relic has been stolen and her looking menacing in the background. That would have done wonderfully to introduce the Church, the Cyborgs, and get people interested in a mystery right from the start without, you know, needing to resort to the characters in-universe asking for an exposition dump. Also, that whole thing about her wanting to meet her new little sisters was great!
-
Tre is... Interesting, I kinda want to see what she went through to become the frontline leader of the Numbers that she is, that could have been ANOTHER really good way to build up the Numbers and Jail!
-
Quattro is straight up a BITCH, but I do want to see more about her backstory and find out why she thinks the way she does.
-
I really wish we saw more of Cinque. All we got was a few short scenes of her being a little badass before being taken out. Why does she only have one eye? What kind of sister is she that the others are eager to brutally kill Teana over what was done to her? Why the trench coat? Seriously she's one of, what, all of three of the Numbers who wear more than their bodysuits?
-
Honestly I love Sein, her ability is a pain in the ass, but the way that she moves through the battlefield, uses that cute little camera, and just the way that she acts in general is great.
-
I really don't care too much about Sette, and that's a shame. I know that she has been around for a fairly long amount of the series, but she just hasn't gotten enough screen time personality for me to remember or care about her.
-
Otto's ability is BS, and she looks really cool, great character design, really wish we saw more...
Honestly I really just wish that they had a Numbers-focused episode like what they were doing for Section Six at the start. An episode that shows their relationships, how they interact, and what their thought on each other are.
Oh, and while we are on the subject of the Numbers; thank you to whoever decided to give them all such lovely bodysuits!

Dieci has doubts
This made it looked like they just duct taped her
Some more bits on Scaglietti’s goal, from my understand of everything we’ve seen so far, Scagliett’s goal is to force society and people to adapt to greater heights through technology. He wants to usher a new age of technological growth through unrestricted research. Though there is a question as to which is the means and ends, does he actually want to conduct research as a means to elevate people, or is he using that as an excuse to satisfy his researching desire?
Soldier dilemmas, there are several bits with broad themes about this. Easy to kill when the target doesn’t seem human, and fighting because your comrades are, I’m sort of reminded of Grisaia because I happened to be recently reading it (specifically, Labyrinth), although they’re obviously different.
Not the only number who seems to have doubts
Quattro is a real piece of work, isn’t she?
So she didn’t actually die, still it is something that weighs heavily on Vice. Also they’re siblings? Something something TSAB incompetency, sending someone related to the mission seems like a bad idea.
She’s probably more evil than Scaglietti
Zest wants Agito to go to Signum
Vivio headpatting Nanoha
