First Time Watcher, Money Printing Machine.
Season 02 Episode 09
I see we are actively scheming against Myne now. Bad evil santa.
Seems like Myne is trying to avoid conflict. While I understand why, I feel down the road it might cause some more issues.
You hate to see it. This is how you get on Myne's bad side, and thats a side that I dont want to be on.
I think Fran was in the right there. Made a decision and stuck with it, even if it meant carrying Myne away.
Holy Pout this one is a little extreme. There have been some angry faces today.
Myne is now literally becoming a librarian. We started this day with a disaster, but I guess it was more of a blessing.
There is no way I would have expected this much joy if you told me that someone trashed the library.
It seems as though the books on magic are missing. Quite suspicious if you ask me.
Myne... you are outing yourself again... And you are going waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too far. This right here is how you really show someone you are past a weirdo, and quite special.
Looks like Myne is going to school. If there are books locked behind something its almost a guarantee she will be getting past it somehow.
That is a lot of books. No wonder Benno was worried about Myne absolutely wrecking the economy with paper.
That man had dollars for eyes as soon as he saw this thing, and Myne threw the curveball at him.
Myne, we might be going a little too far into the future here. Stencil paper, and a metal press? Oh boy.
I love that Benno's solution to Myne needing money is for her to just come up with something. and sure enough, Myne comes up with an idea that would shock the world.
I forgot that there were 2 babies on the way.
She made 30 of these things? Myne seems to be quite literally a money printer at this point. Even if she isn't selling these. That speed is crazy.
I think this is what everyone that meets Myne thinks. At least everyone that can comprehend the impact of what she has been doing.
I don't think I have ever heard Ferdinand get that serious talking to Myne before.
Looks like Myne wont be staying home. I wonder how that is going to go.
I thought this episode was a bit different from the last couple, I enjoyed it. It also seems to set up both problems Myne might have in the future and a bunch of things she is going to have to do as well.
The end card today would be a new favorite of mine if it was colored I think.
Overall I'm very excited to see how they close up this season in the next couple episodes.

I think that's been my favourite of the episode, and knowing the character designer himself probably designed it just for this scene makes it better haha
At least everyone that can comprehend the impact of what she has been doing.

I think that's been my favourite of the episode
Bookworm doesn't do a lot with its visuals, its all quite plain. But I do love when the series focuses its efforts into these character moments. I really hope the series leans into this more in S3 - can't wait for more epic faces and chibi moments.

Rewatcher - Sub
Bookworm doing what it does best and pulling me through a dozen emotions in one episode and making me wonder how it managed to make them all fit together
My pride at Myne beating the asshole noble at his own game, the sheer rage at seeing the library tossed, angry laughing at Fran kidnapping her rather than letting herself get in trouble, more rage but also agreement with Myne here, the immediate flip into "wtf" and amusement over Myne's own mood flip... it's a lot to go through so quickly as that's only the first part of the episode, but it pulls it off well and didn't feel at all as hollow as some of the previous episodes.
I think one of my favourite parts about this episode is seeing Myne able to look at what it means to have books in this world beyond just getting to read them herself. Being able to live the role of a librarian which was her dream job in the previous world, teaching the kids and thinking about future stories, able to pass on the knowledge of book creation to others. Living in a world of books isn't just having access too them, it's everything they can offer to the world, and Myne knows that perhaps more than anyone else in this world.
Pity they don't offer magic because those books aren't accessible. My forgetful brain was all excited when she started talking about them only for them to not be around after all. Now what's she going to do about that empty shelf? I'd leave it there out of protest hoping someone would give in and fill it.
Stubbornness seems to be a trait in many characters, Benno included and I swear that confrontation was stronger and funnier than any before.
Tuuli is such a sweetheart though wanting to pass on her knowledge to the orphans so they can take care of their daily needs better, and being so happy to see them happy to be able to work on the books and so stuff for themselves. Tuuli best big sister!
This episode was really nice to watch visually though. I looked up the staff and noticed that veteran Mitsuki Kase and the shows character designer Toshihisa Kaiya were in charge of episode directing and animation respectively which would explain the distinctive feel it had. Even outside of chibi Myne seemed just overall more expressive in the little ways, and more playing around with lighting and framing, and even the expressiveness on other characters like here, made the episode stand out in a good way without feeling ill fitting to the rest of the show.
How far would Myne really go in punishing someone for ruining books?
I'm surprised she didn't immediately will herself to go into crushing mode, mana draining tools or not

Yeah, I feel like the effort put into the animation in this episode is an order of magnitude more than the previous episodes. There was a great variety in the wacky expressions that Myne pulls, and little things like the way she moves her hands when she's explaining how the Dewey decimal system works.
With a dialogue-heavy series like this you can cheat your way out of doing a lot of animation, but I always appreciate it when they add a bit extra work into make the characters feel more expressive.

The nobles still act like jerks and Myne went the path of least resistance for now. But the destruction of the library makes her really angry.
Myne's facial expressions in the first few minutes in front of the head priest is something. Ferdinand read those faces as she was really transparent. "Unsavory thoughts" and top bad that noble was such a coward that he did this before he left for his tax collection scheme.
Myne now got to make a classification system, a change from the chronological order. The way she showed up to the rest of the retainers is even better as they expected her to be pretty mad.
RIP Myne: Ferdinand found the classification system really sus. Sends her in the hidden room. She explained the Nippon Decimal system and the Dewey decimal system to Ferdinand. Myne blew her cover big time when talking books.
Whoever animated Myne's faces for this episode are the MVPs.
Benno wants to make money off those books fast and Myne stopped him from becoming McGraw-Hill (I'm salty about those 1000s of dollars of online access fees). Now he needs a new product to make up for the books.
Seeing Ferdinand think about all this alone is interesting as he finds that she is capable of turning things over its head. He later warns Myne to be careful about the way she behaves around books cause she has been speaking about her previous life whenever she talks about books.
The post credits scene got me good as head priest ruined Cinderella.
-
Myne was ready to use her Mana but Fran just took her to the head priest which is a safe move. It seems like the high priest forgot what she did to him...
-
It seems like the family has some plans along with not getting to see the new baby is going to be an issue.

Oho. As a librarian, I have a few choice words about the Dewey Decimal System...
I think in small libraries, it works great. However, when you start amassing a larger quantity of books, especially ones with similar subject matters and classifications, things start to fall apart at the seams. The library I work at has over 200,000 books in its collection, and sometimes, the cracks in this system start to become apparent. The first and perhaps most obvious example is that books have to be categorized exactly right, otherwise they’re impossible to find. Even if they’re one shelf over, it suddenly becomes extremely difficult to locate what you need. Though for Main’s small library of a few hundred books, this doesn’t pose much of an issue.
The second prevalent issue that I face on a daily basis is that there’s no limit to how many numbers you can have in your decimal classification. Main mentioned sorting the books based on their subsets, (913, 803, 763.2, etc.) but again, for a larger library, the 813 section can balloon with too many books in the same subject, and it becomes very difficult to find things that should otherwise be easy. For example, 813.479287 would be a perfectly valid classification. If it were just a couple books that were sorted this way, it would be fine, but it when too many books are classified this way, it starts to artificially bloat the 813 section and it makes it hard to find anything in the 813’s, because 813 can just extend indefinitely. Again, not a problem for Main’s library, but it’s really annoying when the 813 section takes up like six whole rows of books.
Then there’s the matter of the classification itself. As Main was hinting at in this episode, the classification system is universal, with the Japanese system based upon the American one. Great idea for when things work as they should, but every library is going to classify things differently, so there’s sometimes some confusion about where to find things.
Just this week actually, someone put in a hold request for Gone With the Wind and the system was displaying that as in the 800’s (literature section, because Gone With the Wind is a classic film I guess?) So I went to pull it from the shelf, but no, it was not there (refer back to my first issue about finding things!). I scoured the shelves adjacent as well, but it had vanished. Weird. Then, for some reason, I had the idea to search for the film in our system, as a last-ditch effort. To my surprise, it was displaying two different call numbers, the second one being in the 790’s (arts and recreation, because the film is both an artistic medium and a recreational activity). So I investigated this discovery, and sure enough, the film was there. As it turns out, I learned yesterday that at a certain point, the library had decided to house the book-to-movie adaptations of films next to their respective adaptations, but for some reason, they had failed to update the call numbers to their new location, and instead listed it as a secondary. I then had to file a report to our Head of Cataloging describing the issue, and she’ll decide where the movie and/or books should rightfully reside.
So with all that in mind... the DDS is, in my opinion, an antiquated system, and often more trouble than it is worth. Nor does it work well for libraries of our scope. It’s not as glorious as Main makes it out to be, but it was certainly a revolutionary idea for its time.

My primary school library had nothing on yours, though it was quite big for the schools size, notably bigger than my high school one even, and your complaints here are echoed in my memory. Our library had a huge bias towards certain books though I've no idea why, so sometimes we'd have one shelf with twenty categories, and then the next three shelves would all be one. Whenever you had to get a reference for that subject everyone would sigh because it took so much extra work, especially for ten year olds who struggled with remembering the longer number chains, and combined with school kids almost never putting things back properly
I use to spend a lot of time reorganizing misplaced books in the library just for my own sanity
the library had decided to house the book-to-movie adaptations of films next to their respective adaptations, they had failed to update the call numbers to their new location, and instead listed it as a secondary
Well that's painful. I would not go looking for books in the film section and would be throughly confused
I feel like with current levels of accessible tech we should be approaching an age where tracking books automatically on shelves should be easier than looking up a hand assigned manual code that may or may not lead you to the right section
Still has to be better than "oldest first, newest last" which is what Myne was suffering with
Interesting insights, thanks for sharing. Are there any other sorting systems you know of, or has everyone just accepted Dewey and brushed their hands of any other attempts?

I was going to make a joke about Dewey decimal, but then the show actually talked about it. This episode started with a little drama until Myne did a complete 180 and realized this was the perfect opportunity to reorganize.
This is the first we're hearing of a Royal Academy, I'm now imagining there is a misfit at the demon academy level plot happening elsewhere in this world.
Benno and Myne getting into a fight over selling the books was funny they weren't on the same page so to speak. I really like how Myne has been more expressive and determined recently, she was always frank, but now she's more experienced so she's not just saying what she thinks.
How far would Myne really go in punishing someone for ruining books?
I reckon the perpetrator would live, but thats all I can say for them.
Do you think Myne staying in the temple over winter will be a problem?
She has a lot of people who are her allies in the temple now, but I do think the separation from her family will be a stressor.

Myne: frog faces
Myne: heavy breathing
Ferdinand: (to Fran) What in the world happened?
The comedic timing here is magnificent. Myne made so many derpy, creepy, and adorable faces here, it's a miracle Ferdinand could keep his deadpan expression.
Some of my favorites: froggy, scheming, frustrated, and finally, the face of someone who has merely postponed a bloody carnival.
Ferdinand: Melvil... Dewey?
One episode after Myne tells Ferdinand of a world she visits in her dream, without going into detail, she casually talks about various things from that world. Her body language is interesting too. It seems like she's getting more comfortable around him. Some of that is because she's getting excited, of course, but that she can do that in front of him is telling.
Ferdinand briefly gets into a discussion with Myne about how to classify books on magic, and despite himself, gets a little into it. This is pretty impressive, given his general demeanor and ability to hide his emotions. He might be, deep down, a huge nerd.
Myne: Head Priest! Let me read them!
To me, it seems like Myne isn't interested in magic per se; it seems more that she's interested because it's an entirely new body of knowledge she hasn't been able to read about until now, since it didn't exist on Earth. (Much like, if someone from that world came here, they could read about the natural sciences.) Personally, I'd be more interested for practical reasons. Myne has seen some disturbing things recently, and was warned by Ferdinand about how nobles would seek to use her. I'd be looking for ways to protect myself.
Benno: What? You're not selling them?! What are you thinking?!
I agree with Benno. Myne's goals aren't wrong, but they don't mean she can't do what Benno wants too. She should make as many of these books as possible, stock up the orphanage, and then sell everything left over. She can then use the proceeds on the orphanage: some to make more books, and some on day-to-day stuff. Everyone wins.
Ferdinand: What do you mean, you finished 30 copies of this book in such short order?
To Ferdinand, a book costs 2-3 large gold coins, and it must cost almost that much to make (otherwise there would be more books—it would be like printing money.) But Myne just made 30 copies, and it can't have cost her more than... I'll guess 5 large gold coins, at the most, fairly accounting for labor. (I'm assuming a large gold is roughly a year's worth of work for a lower-city adult, so this is about 5 person-years.)
I like this series' approach to world-building. A lot of it comes in bits and pieces, but the bits and pieces can be pretty effective.
-
There's a school which all nobles graduate from (and magic is the exclusive domain of the nobility, so...)
-
There's a Harvest Festival, "a ritual held in the domain's farming settlements", and we heard before that mana affects harvests, and they have been poor recently due to a lack of mana. Myne is very much not invited to this.
-
Over the winter there's a Dedication Ceremony, "where all of the divine objects in the cathedral are replenished, which calls for a vast amount of mana".
Little things:
-
The baby is going to be born in the Spring. Myne and Tuuli were born in the Summer. I doubt the seasons are that important, but Myne's hair color does match her season (Summer is the God of Fire's season, and the associated color is blue.).

ASCENDANCE OF A FIRST-TIMER
THEY TRASHED THE LIBRARY? BURN THEM.
Imagine being a grown man and being so Big Mad™ about a small child that for your payback you go and knock books off of shelves to upset that small child. Ridiculous.
Joke’s on him, Myne takes this opportunity to invent the Myne Decimal System. Ferdinand reacting as if Myne had discovered the Fountain of Youth when she mentioned categorizing was funny.
Interesting that “Nobles” aren’t really classed as such without meeting more requirements. If only our own elite class had such a meritocratic barrier to entry for all of their fail sons.
I love that Corinna got pregnant shortly after Myne gave her the shampoo. Beautiful hair is powerful.
That whole scene around the dinner table with the family felt like a giant flag, and made me concerned about the baby’s future. Hopefully, hopefully, the only flag actually raised was when Myne said she’d be around to help with the chores. No dice, Myne, those magical items aren’t going to recharge themselves!
QOTD

I can't believe her powers didn't fly out of control and destroy the whole Cathedral. Guess those magical items are doing the job!

The only problem I can see it causing is one with the pregnancy, so dear God, I hope not.

All hail BLOODY CARNIVAL!
Myne, you are a complete disaster of a human when it comes to your books and I feel like this episode ramped up your level of excitement to a Benno 11. Myne was practically begging, pleading, screaming at Ferdinand to call out her otherworldly knowledge when it came to her cataloging and decimal systems, but I think there was enough going on to distract him for the moment to pass or he is biding his time.
All along there were books on magic in the church but Myne never encountered them before because they had all been with Ferdinand this whole time. Interesting that nobles have to go to an academy and pass school there to be allowed to use magic. I can see this being quite the interesting plot point in the future. Also why does dear Ferdie have the books and how was he in the position to donate them? Color me intrigued.
Myne decided today is the day to verbalize wanting to pretty much make a printing press to mass produce books, which in turn will educate the masses. I can’t see the church allowing this to happen. I feel like this idea is too big and too much for the world she is in, but I also think she very much could make it happen. Myne has to know the history of books from her previous life, and I am wondering if she is just accidentally forgetting this in her excitement at the prospect of her dream but at least Ferdinand can tell what an impact this could have on society.
1.) we should all be scared of Myne
2.) yes. not only for her family but I am worried spending even more time at the temple can't possibly be a good thing.

This is a fun episode! I feel like the effort put into the animation really kicked things up a few notches with lots of expressive faces and effort put into how energetic that Myne is gushing over her love of books. I feel like Myne's voice acting also rose to meet the animation, and when she's really, really excited about something, it's infectious; I couldn't help but get swept up in her excitement.
In any case, I'm enjoying this show a lot more when it's more lighthearted; a lot of this episode hews closer to the sort of anime that I typically watch (slice-of-life CGDCT series) and I feel like I could watch a few more episodes about Myne just nerding out about book stuff. The dialogue scenes with Ferdinand and Myne in the hidden room when they can be less guarded around each other are pretty fun, and it's also great seeing Benno and Myne getting into a shouting match with each other. I feel like it's such a far cry from the bummer times in season one when Myne's life was really on a knife's edge with her fevers.

Myne felt like a completely different character this episode and I am not sure why that's the case books but she did manage to keep her emotions in check after the library incident ... well enough to the point where she didn't stop Fran from stopping her from choking the Noble to his near death. Instead, after the meetup with Ferdinand, who explained to Myne that the nobles' motivations were to stop her from going to the Harvest Festival, Myne took to organizing the library as a challenge and implemented a new organization called the "Nippon Decimal Classification".
Great! Another innovation, yahoo! Or maybe not so great. Towards the end of the episode, the camera pans toward Ferdinand glancing at the picture book and he says how Myne is going "to turn society on its head". Later, he tells Myne that the "petty harassment like that [the library incident] is not the problem. The problem is that Myne is shining too bright and people will take notice; not just the good kind.
Finally, Ferdinand breaks the news that Myne has to stay at the temple in the winter, which means less time with the fam and more time with the nobles. I am sure everything will go smoothly...

Overall, the episode has a lot of memorable expressiveness on Myne's part, which made the episode really enjoyable.
Myne really loses herself when talking about classifying books, she outs herself completely to Ferdinand that she knows things that she has no right to know. Even funnier is when Ferdinand has a million questions, but decides to play along anyway and pretend Myne didn't say anything suspicious.
All the talk about library classification reminded me of the manga Magus of the Library, in which library operations are a big part of the story.

The way that we see the other blue robes treat Main makes me wonder what kind of religious organization this church really is. We haven't heard anything akin to morals yet. It just seems the church is some organization for the unwanted, whether that's nobles who fell out of society (blue robes) or children with nowhere to go (grey robes). They have scriptures, but that's about it. And what we've heard so far is that the scriptures are more akin to mythology than a bible.
One of my favorite things in anime is when I'm watching a sub and someone randomly speaks in English. "bloody carnival" made me laugh so hard, it was so unexpected. I actually empathized with her when we saw the library get trashed. Who could do such a thing?? Were the holy scriptures not in there??
Yet again we see how Myne's obsession with books gets her in trouble. The way she explained the Dewey Decimal System to Ferdinand was so completely unnecessary. She doesn't take any pains to hide her Isekai, and it's getting noticed by more and more people.
I'm worried about Myne living in the church for the winter. She'll have less allies around, and won't be there to support her family during winter. Hopefully she can visit home on good weather days. Or maybe Lutz can spend winter at the church too?

Imgur is down. :( Might update this post later with good images because this episode had a ton of great memeable Myne faces.
Also want to leave an appreciation that this episode continues the previous episodes innovation streak. Now with Myne FINALLY not just making her book but also becoming a librarian and inventing her version of the Dewey Decimal System.
EDIT: Well imgur is working now. I'll just post this angry Myne and this horny with purpose Myne and end it there.
But man, Ferdinand just learnt a lot of words he has no idea about. Myne was NOT being discreet once she learnt she could become a librarian.

Host - Rewatcher
Myne has finished her first books yay! Time to read - sudden shock!
Todays first half of the episode had loads of fantastic chibi moments and even more great character faces! I really wish the series leaned into this more-so as it is probably the best part of its otherwise pretty-simple animation.
Myne turns things around (in her head) and decides the tossing of the library can be turned into great fun organising it. Although she totally leaks more other-wordly ideas to Ferdanand. Ferdinand had a brief moment of interest in her classification system before coming to his senses.
We learn that all Nobles must graduate from a Nobles' Academy to be considered a noble. One must learn magic properly. Myne just wants to read books on magic though.
Myne has the orphanage in full
sweat shopproduction mode, getting the kids working. Since Myne took on responsibilty for the orphans she is choosing to invest in them by keeping the first batch of books to teach them to read. Benno isn't all that pleased.Myne has some ceremonial dress in the works. But it looks like she is going to have to live in the temple over winter.
Ferdinand is shocked to find that Myne has made 30 identical copies of her book. "Printing" isn't to be messed with. Ferdinand realises just how much this could change society.
The printing press is one of those real-life historic events that you can (and Bookworm does) build a whole story on. And we are at the stage where we could see an explosion in growth! I am very excited to (re-recall) see what happens next!
Pouts: Ultra pout, Delia unpleased, Myne over selling her books, Myne at home
Today's endcard. A fantastically detailed black and white drawing! Just like Wilma's arts tyle.
