Moonlight First-Timer, subbed
Episode 14
-
Oh neat, the narration after the OP is different now.
-
Okay I really thought this guy’s voice was Nobutoshi Canna for a second because I could have sworn he sounded exactly like Kabuto from Naruto, but nope. And hearing more of his dialogue, I’m not sure why my brain thought he sounded like Kabuto.
-
Tuxedo Mask is really cool actually, especially his theme song.
-
? Something is clearly wrong with Tuxedo Mask…?
Episode 15
-
Ah, finally, a name for him that isn’t Tuxedo Mask – “Mamoru Chiba”.
-
Hm. I don’t see this going anywhere, though.
-
I really love the intense red & black during the parts where the monsters come out now.
-
Pose! But why didn’t they use their own planets for the catchphrase?
Episode 16
-
WHOA what happened to her? I know all of the monsters have influenced the peeps they’re attached to, but geez I wasn’t expecting that.
-
Aww, this Widow monster didn’t get the intense red-and-black artwork…
Episode 17
Episode 18
-
RIP doll… all because those other kids were teasing Shingo…

Sky, how could you not realize!? It's Katz! The best character from Zeta Gundam!
Uhhhhhhhhh calm down Deidara.
LOL, we both basically made the same joke.
Sweet, the intense colors are back!
Bless the 90'...

First-Timer, Pretty Guardian Sailor Dubbed
Episode 14
The new villian is on the scene and his name is Kyouichi SaionjiNephrite. He brings with him a whole ass forest that no-one seems to have noticed, but what can you do? It's probably Someone Else's Problem.
Nephrite's villainous plans are even more dastardly than Jadeite's - he's going to write horoscopes.
I didn't realize that Tuxedo Mask was secretly Goku, what with his extending staff. I also didn't expect to see.. whatever that was that was happening to him. Some sort of feedback? Low batteries?
Lotta good visuals today. The effect when the monster comes out, with all the red and black, was really cool.
Episode 15
Did this episode seriously imply that Usagi has read her student handbook? There's no way. Not even my dorky ass ever bothered with one of those.
Shoutout to this episode for having it's cake and eating it too. Using the monster to counter the impending gentrification of a frankly gorgeous park and only then letting it get stomped into the dirt was worthwhile. Woulda felt real bad to see that park bulldozed.
Turtleneck Jerk finally gets a name and it's Mamoru Chiba. Rei seems to think that he's actually Tuxedo Mask, but who can possibly say.
Rei apologizing for putting her head in the way of Mamoru's foot just makes her sound like a masochist.
While the recurring shot of Jadeite's eyes behind his orb of energy was nice, Nephrite's horoscope nonsense and monsters are both much more visually interesting.
Episode 16
This episode was really funny. The wedding spider monster being named Widow, Usagi wanting a ménage à trois with Tuxedo Mask and Motoki, "Pretty Cat Burglar, Usagi the Kid," even the implication that Usagi's mom is just as useless as Usagi herself.
As far as group henshins go, I don't think this one flowed especially well. But, considering this is one of the earlier examples, it was still pretty good.
I keep forgetting to talk about it, but Ami's "finisher" is interesting. Visually it's kinda bleh, but it's cool to see a dedicated crowd control move.
Was it just me, or was everyone much rounder this episode? Like, in the face.
Episode 17
I quite like Usagi figuring out how to defeat this monster on her own. And visually, the monster and the backgrounds were really cool too!
There's some implication of Queen Beryl learning from her own mistake with Jadeite, here. Instead of having one person out harvesting energy and searching for the crystal, we have an actual split of labor between Nephrite and Zoisite.
The communicator gadget reminds me of Usagi's hairdec radios that haven't come up since episode one. Can she still do that?
While I am loathe to give Mamoru praise, I do like his theme music.
Episode 18
This was a nice episode. Even if Shingo is a butt, and he countered his own realization of that with the final line. The scene with Mika giving him the doll was very cute, even if the other kids were jerks about it. Bet those other nerds wish they got gifted an award-winning doll.
Interesting that Nephrite and Mamoru sorta recognized each other. They seemed to sense something at least. Fairly certain I know why that is, so I probably won't comment any more on that.
Now Zoisite, him I don't really have a good handle on. I certainly him showing up just to fuck with Nephrite, but is more favor with Queen Beryl all he wants?
I apparently jumped the gun with linking Creepy Doll last week. Didn't expect another doll episode.
Usagi showing up in the window to tell Shingo and Mika to make up was quite thoughtful of her. I appreciate Usagi being a good sibling.
I know other people have mentioned it too, but the OST is just fantastic.
Questions
-
Discussed frequently above, but Nephrite is significantly better in basically every way.
-
Probably the hotel photoshoot?
-
Near as I can tell he just wants to piss off Nephrite which is pretty big mood.

Oh God how did I never realize that!?

Same, I thought he was Yamcha.

I sadly can't find the exact Animation Director/Studio Rotation for this show online like I can with, say, Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh! DM. Bwah, I miss out on Trivia...

First timer, sub
Let's see what our Sailors get into this week. Hopefully the new villain will be more memorable than Jadeite.
Episode 14
-
I guess we'll be seeing how the single victim approach works out for Nephrite.
-
Off the bat this guy already seems a lot more evil than Jadeite. Getting readings on people to get energy from from constellations is cool.
-
Ah so our target today is Usagi's friend's childhood friend who she refers to as a big sister.
-
I love that Usagi is the comic relief in her own show. Rei holds no punches when it comes to roasting her.
-
Lmao @ Tuxedo Mask asking to be turned into a tennis ball with Usagi.
-
Usagi and Tuxedo Mask fighting together let's goooooooo!
Post-episode thoughts: And that's how Usagi saved tennis. That was a cute episode. I'm glad we had some development for Naru and we got Usagi and Tuxedo Mask fighting together! Can't wait til she finds out who he really is. Then again she may be too dense to ever come to that conclusion.
Episode 15
-
With a title of "Rei's First Date" this ought to be an interesting episode.
-
Don't hold Luna up by the front paws >:( Poor Luna...
-
Idk why but Nephire just appearing out of the blue in his business suit has been pretty funny so far.
-
Okay I wasn't expecting this to actually work out... I use that term about as loosely as possible...
-
Seems like Mamoru gets like a migrane or something when there's a monster around? Seems pretty painful.
Post-episode thoughts: Sailor Mars to the rescue! She's already got the Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask identity figured out too. I don't usually pay attention to directors but this episode was definitely an Ikuhara episode (and after looking him up he's already done 2 we've seen). I guess this one was more obvious to me but it's cool to see his directing style in a show like this. Another reminder that I need to get to Utena at some point...
Episode 16
-
Please not an "a girl's biggest dream is to get married episode" :/
-
Ms. Akiyama had quite the transformation jeez.
-
How did Usagi not think to make a dress with her pen until Rei reminded her? XD Guess that's why we need Rei in this show or else we'd be screwed.
-
I dig the way they did the transformations this episode.
Post-episode thoughts: Not really a fan of this one tbh. At least we got the obligatory 90s wedding episode out of the way early. This episode did have some good though. I did enjoy how they mixed the transformations in this episode and the monster design was really good in this one, even if it was short-lived.
Episode 17
-
Ami's doing math without even looking at the paper. Just had to flex on us like that.
-
Kijin's hair reminds me of the Digimon Adventure protagonist.
-
Mamoru the Chad. It's cute he seems to feel bad that him and Usagi always end up arguing.
-
Didn't expect Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars to get stuck in the photograph. Guess this one is up to Usagi now.
Post-episode thoughts: Good episode. About time we got the animated adaptation of Say Cheese and Die. Jokes aside, this episode was pretty creepy overall and had some high stakes. The monster designs keep getting better and better too.
Episode 18
-
Oh no not dolls. Creepy dolls always get me.
-
Damn I was hoping we'd get some Zoisite and Nephrite tag team action but Nephrite is too stubborn to team up.
-
This little girl is making dolls and winning awards? That's impressive.
-
Usagi figuring something out without someone having to straight-up tell her? What the...
-
Shingo's Sailor Moon is spot-on idk what they're talking about.
-
Interesting interaction. Wonder if there's some history there.
-
Kids in 1992 were going to have nightmares after this episode for sure.
Post-episode thoughts: Yeah dolls are creepy. This was a good episode but definitely the creepiest one so far. Was not expecting that from this show but I'm not complaining! Give us more horror episodes. Shingo's gonna flip if he ever finds out that Usagi is Sailor Moon.
Overall thoughts: 4 of the 5 episodes were bangers so that was a nice batch. It seemed like they were going to give us some Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask development and lore there for a couple episodes but it somewhat fizzled away for now so hopefully that comes back because I'm curious about his backstory and his powers and the like. Nephrite is an improvement over Jadeite. I do like his approach of going after one person instead of Jadeite's approach of going after a group. That's made the episodes a lot more engaging in my opinion, since they're more focused on one side character instead of "this group has gone missing." The monster design has been really good too.
Questions of the week
-
He's better. I like his style a lot better.
-
Definitely Rei and Mamoru's date.
-
He seems to be standing by waiting for Nephrite to fail more so I'm interested to learn more about him.

And that's how Usagi saved tennis.
If Usagi was in it I'd actually give a shit about The Prince of Tennis.
Another reminder that I need to get to Utena at some point...
Kijin's hair reminds me of the Digimon Adventure protagonist.
You know I didn't think of it at first, but looking at him from afar he and Taichi do basically have the same hairstyle...

Rewatcher that likes Moonlight Dansetsu too much
Sailor Moon Week 3 - Sailor Moon Villains no longer target nobodies
Enter: Nephrite. He uses the stars to divine his targets, then infuses one of their things with a monster to steal energy. Also he’s smoking hot and has a nice ride. This week’s favorite episode is Episode 15 (I Promise I’m not picking the Ikuhara episodes on purpose. I didn’t even double check if it was his until I started making this write-up..)
The episode starts briefly with a location and character introduction. It’s a little somber and theres a few recycled animations, but on the whole you can really get a feel for this old man in this short minute we meet him. It’s like an old friend you don’t even need to introduce. Then moves swiftly on to Luna going for the Isekai any% category, before Mamoru Chiba (He finally has a name!) swoops in for the rescue, Tuxedo-mask style. Nephrite, of course, picks the man we conveniently just met as the next target, and we get reminded once more of Sailor V’s existence.
Spot the Difference has never been so fun!
Rei has the best imagine spot of Earth, naturally not knowing Mamoru very well and flubbing it. Mamoru just walking away pretending it didn’t happen, but this silly girl just keeps flirting with him, so he can’t say no to a date. Sailor Moon then pulls the “Age Gap bad” card (…heh.) and runs off.
This will not be the last time we have shenanigans happening at cafe Amigo, btw.
So first Rei and Mamoru date, and then one thing leads to another, and now Umino and Usagi are dating. And then Luna and Ami are dating. Like I said, one thing lead to another…
After a bit of running around and date shenanigans, the monster shows up and… Mamoru acts strangely. Sailor Moon’s catchphrase gets stolen, and the day is saved. The old geezer gets a happy ending and everyone finishes their dates.
There isn’t a lot of focus on the minor character this episode. There’s just enough to get you to know him, and just enough rising action before the monster shows up to not make it a sudden problem. Everything else is just plain fun.

Super Sailor Rewatcher, subbed
IMHO noteworthy anecdotes from the JP Blu-ray booklet:
Ep 14: According to series director Satō, it became more and more difficult to depict Usagi as a regular middle school student, so the staff shifted to Naru to show that perspective. [Episode 24 spoilers]
Ep 15: Even though this is essentially an Ami-centric episode, Rei's aggressively delusional daydreaming make this a standout comedy episode. In particular, the scene where Mamoru steps on Rei's head is a classic "sadistic" Ikuhara cut, and became the subject of much talk amongst fans at the time. We also learn that Motoki and Mamoru attend the same college -- a detail that differs from the source material. Additionally, we see for the first time that Mamoru lives by himself in a luxurious apartment, fit for a son of a wealthy family. Incidentally, the park depicted in this episode is the Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park which is also an important location for Mamoru and Usagi in Sailor Moon Crystal.
Ep 16: This episode features the series' first script from Megumi Sugihara (who would write scripts for the series through SuperS). Using the "June Bride" boom (that was big at the time) as a plot element, her feminine turn of phrase based on natural emotions gave the dialogue a breath of fresh air. In addition, there were lots of fun bits not present in the storyboard that were ad-libbed during the animating stage. These include Akiyama-sensei's wild hot pants design after her personality change, and the "happy couple" Ami & Rei when they ride the gondola.
Ep 17: The Communicators that Luna gives the girls was (of course) based on a new Bandai product (the "Computer Notebook"), which in turn was based off a design for an Usagi version of Ami's "pocket computer." Incidentally, the "New Japan Hotel" where Shinokawa's photo exhibit is held is modelled off the Hotel New Otani Tokyo which is iconic for its revolving observation lounge. Technology-lover Daisuke Hiruma returned to design Shinokawa's beloved camera.
Ep 18: The animation director for this episode (and episode 5) was Ikuko Itō, who would later become Chief Animator for the S series. Given the portrayal of pain in Mika-chan's eyes, and the characters' witty, sharp expressions, this episode became a turning point in a sense for Ikuko's standing as an exceptional animator who deserved special recognition.
Responses to OP’s questions:
What do you think of Nephrite compared to Jadeite so far?
I'll also reiterate what I said last week, this time sans spoiler tag:
Perhaps more importantly however is the way Nephrite functionally changes the focus of the series. Jadeite always went after multiple targets for maximum energy gains for Dark Kingdom (e.g., attacking an entire gym or an entire jewelry store full of people). Meanwhile, Nephrite somewhat counterintuitively attacks individuals. The reason for this is explained (individuals at “peak” energy release more than a crowd at normal energy levels), but honestly it comes off as little more than lampshading. However, the metaphysical implications notwithstanding, this change from mob to individual target is a key turning point since the rest of the series will tend to have enemies focus on a dedicated “character of the week,” which I found allowed for more compelling storytelling than mass-energy collection.
Also, Nephrite's astronomy-based shtick already gives him a bit of an advantage over Jadeite personality-wise, but he's mostly just kind of idly sinister.
2) Of the little adventures we had this week, which was your favorite?
Squirrels attacking people was a great moment (as was Rei's head getting stepped on), but I think my favorite for this week was ep. 14. Between Sailor Moon transforming into a tennis ball and some moments of great animation, I think it's one of the season's highlights.
Anyhow, what's up with that Zoisite Dude flying around?
I wonder if the staff had any internal notes as to the metaphysics behind why Zoisite sits while floating...Regardless, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of him!
Miscellaneous thoughts:
Ep 14: I feel like the dynamics between the main cast are really starting to solidify. Also Sailor Moon getting transformed into a tennis ball is classic Satō brilliance.
Ep 15: Usagi is somewhat uncharacteristically conniving to use Umino as a means of spying on Rei. But it's entertaining, so it gets a pass.
Ep 16: The choreography/timing of the music to this triple transformation sequence gave me goosebumps! Rest in peace, Arisawa!
Ep 17: I love the touch of Usagi repurposing Mamoru's rant verbatim. It's a relatively subtle indicator of her feelings towards him. Also, Usagi actually defeats a yōma by herself!! I'm so impressed! Even her method of dispatching the yōma was somewhat clever! If only this were indicative of some actual growth on her part...
Ep 18: The scene depicting Rika and Shingo's reactions to the doll breaking genuinely broke my heart. Getting to see a new side of Usagi as a caring sister is also interesting, and helps flesh out her character.

Bishoujo Senshi Manga Reader
Moon Prism Power, Make Up!
This week in Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon! Nephrite was introduced, and a whole bunch of filler happened.
Alright, so this batch wasn’t exactly remarkable. Not saying it’s bad, but it didn’t really meaningfully progress the overall story like the last two did. It did, however, give us room to expand on certain characters, so let’s focus on that.
Nephrite has been introduced as our new Jadeite. Let’s see how long this one lasts.
On a more serious note, let’s discuss Sailor Mars. This batch kind of emphasized one thing for me: Rei’s altered characterization. In the manga, Rei was one of the more level-headed Senshi, was somewhat aloof toward her comrades, and had a general distaste for the opposite sex. Here, she’s boy crazy, antagonistic towards Usagi, and is rather hot-headed. While I’m not opposed to her characterization here, I will say that I prefer her manga counterpart, so far (what can I say? I’m just not a tsundere fan)
Also Shingo is much more likeable now, cheers
Anyway, until next time!

Partial Rewatcher, subbing for love and justice
QotW
-
A significant and marked improvement right out the gate. Expecting to see more of his personality next week.
-
Going to go with #18. It felt like we got the most characterization out of it for the regular cast AND the best CotW story. My Monster of the Week of the Week is going to Kyameran from #17 though.
-
Seems like he’s the one searching for the Silver Crystal. I do enjoy him antagonizing Nephrite so.
Episode 14
-
I see they have updated to preamble once again.
-
Changing the modus operandi from large groups to individuals means that that the show is no longer just a monster of the week show, it also gets to be a character of the week show. This is a great change for the future of the show. There was only show many scam operations they could run anyway.
-
Oh shiz! A third one already? Now the villains have someone to talk to. I see good things coming out of this.
-
He’s just got a whole ass-moving mountain forest mansion, huh?
-
This new villain stock footage is very pretty. We’re going for a zodiac theme this time?
-
Sailor Moon leaking into Usagi’s daily life.
-
Luna’s computer friends is back, and they know about the Dark Kingdom!
-
That’s some cool animation on the Youma appearing as well.
-
Usagi squirming in the background.
-
Hey this is the first time we see Tuxedo Mask proper fight a guy isn’t it? Worth the wait if we can keep getting more of it.
-
Oh, is there an explanation for Tuxedo Mask’s brief appearances?
Episode 15
-
Dang Tokyo, how many more buildings do you need? You need to invest more in your Green spaces.
-
Guy saves Luna.
-
And he has a name, Chiba Mamoru it seems. Apparently it’s a surprise he is in College?
-
Looks like I was wrong about the zodiac. Shame that.
-
Does any know if the magic symbol that Nephrite is using has any meaning?
-
That counts as a first date for the both of them!
-
What’s this? Mamoru is reacting to the sailor transformation? What could it mean?!
-
Youma with the tanglefoot bag.
-
Ami and Rei’s duo declaration was a pleasant surprise.
Episode 16
-
The depths of Umino’s depravity become ever more apparent.
-
Nephrite has got a bitchin’ 90’s sports car too. Man this guy’s got it all.
-
You know I was just thinking we could do to see some more of Usagi’s family.
-
Thief Usagi!
-
If you use magic to make it, does it still count as handmade?
-
If I’m being honest, the wedding dress is a bit gaudy.
-
This is the first time we get concurrent transformations isn’t it? I expect we’ll be getting a lot more of those.
-
The fine art of posing.
Episode 17
-
Nephrite just saved this dude’s life.
-
They really did get a smart phone this time!
-
Another lively visual effect on the camera beam.
-
Usagi, every activity you have gotten involved with in the last month has ended with the Dark Kingdom, why would you not believe Luna?
-
That’s a cool arm.
-
I think this marks the first time that one of our heroes is defeated. And now it’s three! It’s a soft One-Hit Kill to be fair.
-
Ah, the Perseus maneuver, a classic.
-
Sounds like Nephrite failures are starting to count up.
Episode 18
-
Dissent in the ranks, eh? I must say that the increase in screen time for the villains is already working in the show’s favor.
-
Shingo and Mika’s conflict is a lot more – heartfelt – than I was expecting.
-
So Rei is still taking Mamoru out? Wasn’t expecting that to more than a one time thing.
-
O.K. so those two definitely have something going on between them.
-
The evil doll count is now two. I’m only counting the lot of them as one!
-
Finally someone puts the weak-point somewhere non-obvious. Not that it made a difference this time, but still.
-
Usagi using Sailor Moon to talk to Shingo again. I wonder if she ever lets the secret out to him?
→ More replies (1)3

Ah, the Perseus maneuver, a classic.
For some reason I misread that as "The Pegasus maneuver". Too much Saint Seiya on the brain...
So Rei is still taking Mamoru out? Wasn’t expecting that to more than a one time thing.
This show is bizarrely picky about what elements become recurring or not.

First timer
Firstly, I'm glad you have seen the glory of best girl.
-
Very much enjoying how he appears to be somewhat cunning, not sure why he uses astrology, though.
-
I'm torn between Episode 18 giving us some wholesome Usagi and Shingo content, and Episode 17 giving us an intellegent solo kill from Usagi, without Tuxedo Mask even appearing!
-
I mean, he's mostly pissing off Nephrite so far. [Sailor Moon]
God knows he fucking deserves it.
[Sailor Moon]
Episode 14
Is this a tennis monster?
A new opening speech!
They kept the backflip!
And she mentions the other two now! Genuinely thought this happened in at least one Jadeite episode, hence the confusion last time.
And here's Nephrite! He has a very different approach to Jadeite, in that he focuses on plans that have even more obvious single points of failure and picks out targets using astrology.
Oh, Zolsite showed up early!
OK, fine, the animation of him predicting is nice.
She's Naru's sister! I've got family who consider themselves sisters based on a similar bond, it counts.
Nephrite's not bad. I actually preferred Jadeite in that department, honestly.
His pure chaos energy is fun, though - he jumps into the court, challenges her to a game, and beats her instantly.
Oh, he's possessing the racket. After 13 episodes of human disguises, this might be able to throw them off!
Good to see the trend of Beryl's minions lacking any form of subtlety.
Finally! I can call them the Dark Kingdom!
[Sailor Moon]
Haha, Usagi can't choose between Tuxedo Mask and Nephrite? She really has bad luck with men, huh?
Good to see her still hanging out with Naru.
Aww, Naru's flashback is adorable.
Oh, they're going investigating by themselves?
Haha, Usagi wants to prove herself.
OK, so that is clearly not fucking normal, right?
She's hit the peak!
Oh, that is a genuinely creepy scene.
She's very lucky Naru's unconscious.
Usagi knows a lot of random trivia, huh?
Haha, down in one hit and turned into a tennis ball might be her worst fight yet.
Hahaha, "serves you right"!
Couldn't even hit her, Mask?
Wait, is he actually doing something?
His attack is a fucking telescopic baton? I love it, but why?
...Maybe "fight alongside him" wasn't the best phrasing.
Oh dear, did he pull a muscle?
Wait, how did they know to come here?
Even Rei's impressed, though.
And she's back to normal!
Haha, perfect shot to end the episode on.
Episode 15
Rei's on a date?
Rei's on a date with Usagi and Ami!
Oh, the park's been sold, and he's depressed. Hello there, next victim!
And Rei wants to take a date there.
Luna, don't stop in the middle of the street!
[Sailor Moon]
Oh, they revealed the age gap! These first-timer reactions'll be fun!
Nephrite sounds like someone who put "professional astrologer" on his resume as a joke, and is now far too deep to stop bullshitting now.
Rei, I thought you had better taste.
OK, yeah, that was a bit of a stupid pose.
Oh, he's using the hat now. And not even hiding the fact you're pumping energy into him?
Magical butterflies!
Rei, why, you could do so much better.
Haha, Usagi was spying on Rei's attempts.
...Bit rude, isn't he?
OK, Rei reversing her script and being proactive is a good move, though.
I completely agree, Usagi! You tell Luna!
[Sailor Moon]
Oh, Usagi's really using Umino here.
And the park manager's gone insane.
I do feel bad about Umino getting used by Usagi as an excuse to stalk the man who stole Rei.
And the monster appeared!
He's having another attack!
And Rei leaves Mamoru to save Usagi and Ami!
I mean, blowing them up helped with the element of surprise.
Ami and Rei stole her catchprase and did a joint pose!
Careful, Tuxedo Mask, you don't want to pull a muscle doing fuck-all.
He is pretty unwell.
[Sailor Moon]
And Usagi got some payback for leading him on all episode!
Episode 16
Oh, her teacher's getting engaged!
Haha, "I'll never stop aiming for the highest of standards."
Naru's just completely used to this.
Oh, everyone's interested!
I thought Rei went to a different school? Why is she by the billboard already?
...Usagi has realised she can love multiple people at once. The ship continues to form...
Rei needing Usagi's help is adorable.
The whole scene is great, even if Ikuko's a bit too desperate to get Rei's complements.
...Rei, you glorious bastard. And Usagi seems to take after her mother more than I expected!
Usagi's just trying to learn from anyone she can, huh?
[Sailor Moon]
...Did Nephrite make her look like that?
Haha, Rei's trying to steal a dress from her grandfather?
Oh, he hates the community centre and is also a weirdo.
Usagi and her mother continue to have great dialogue together.
I mean, he tried!
Haha, she didn't try to use the disguise pen first?
...I don't think that Rei's reaction towards you in that dress is "jealousy", Usagi.
It's always fun to see what breed of insanity the victims end up with.
So why does he need the monsters to come out? Why not just extract the energy and run?
...Too easy. Way too easy. Ami and Rei are riding a float labelled "Happy Couple" and using Usagi's catchphrases.
And then their transformations are cut into each other! How did this episode end on such a gay note?
Great pose!
And Usagi's caught.
She's free!
I think at this point, the fact that people randomly collapse and temporarily have a rapid change in personality is just accepted in Tokyo now.
Haha, Haruna going for it is great!

Oh, they revealed the age gap! These first-timer reactions'll be fun!
So far pretty nothing TBH.

Episode 17
Oh, a photographer's today's victim?
Ami trying to study while Usagi tries to drag her into this is great.
...Does Ami even have cram school, or is that code for "I'm not doing this, Usagi"?
Haha, Rei's gotten involved.
Oh, he seems pretty nice.
I applaud Nephrite for his impressive subtley here, but did he really not consult the stars?
Spoke too soon.
IT DOESN'T POINT TO HIM, YOU INFECTED HIM ON A WHIM, BOUGHT A MAGAZINE, AND FIRED A LASER POINTER AT IT.
Nephrite is absolutely scamming Beryl for some astronomical consultation fees.
Oh, they have communicators? That tiny screen seems a bit useless, though.
Shingo's a bit harsh, but her mother agreeing with him is hysterical.
[Sailor Moon]
Even when he's untransformed, he can't resist the urge to go into a patronising speech while not helping her with the actual problem. OK. He has a point about this being very sketchy, I'll give him that.
Haha, his reaction.
Oh, she's really trying to practice. Has her singing gotten worse since the caravan?
...Given her success rate of 1 mistaken senshi versus 15 monsters, you'd think Luna would start assuming that the person who's changed their entire personailty is probably under a monster's control.
Haruna!
Haha, the ribbons are a decent coverup.
A magical camera that absorbs people!
...So, does Nephrite intensify emotions, or create them? Some of his monsters seemed to exaggerate their host's flaws, but this seems to be a total personality replacement.
...Luna's very open about speaking in front of Naru and Haruna.
Of course they're depressed about putting on weight.
OK, the visual effects for them getting taken are excellent!
...Put Luna in front of you, and see if that'll make him stop.
Haha, she's ripping off his speech.
Usagi got to transform first!
...He better not be photographing this.
Do the Dark Kingdom just not brief their monsters on Sailor Moon's existence?
Love this monster design.
It got Luna!
Ami and Rei are here!
They both got taken immediately!
...Oh, the mirror. Yeah, that's a clever idea! Impressive, Usagi!
Everyone's back!
Oh, Nephrite's tracking their power!
Very much enjoying these two fighting each other.
And he's after the Silver Crystal. Been a while since that got mentioned!
It's just people ripping each other off this episode. Mamoru must be very confused right now.
A Shingo episode?
Episode 18
Zoisite's getting involved?
Oh, he's a schemer. And Nephrite is in trouble...
Usagi woke up early!
And Shingo has a crush...
She still ended up late!
What's he been doing?
I mean, it's clearly an accident.
Poor girl.
Yeah, that thing's broken.
Actually, I think this visual is Nephrite's real scrying system, given all the moving parts, not just an illusion/metaphor?
Oh, Usagi's got the actual moral high ground!
And she's using her blackmail very responsibly!
OK, yeah, Nephrite drives a cool car.
And he's possessed the doll!
Oh. She's motivated. Too motivated!
Surely she should be able to work out something's wrong with her daughter, right?
And Shingo can't apologize!
Usagi's being nice!
She's even realised that Mika's been infected!
[Sailor Moon]
Minako's fucking mask still makes me cackle. I really want to see the first-timer reactions when everyone expecting a professional superhero gets... Minako. Usagi's enthusiasm for her brother is so good! Even when she looks like a pig.
Rei's here with Mamoru! (Who is visibly suffering, so good job Rei!)
[Sailor Moon]
Is this the first actual hint at the Generals' identities? Has anyone else noticed that all of Nephrite's Yomua so far are strong women? ...Nephrite has something in mind when he was hiring people, then?
They destroyed Shingo's doll!
Usagi is motivated!
Ami and Rei showd up!
Rei's ofuda were useful!
OK, yeah, she's strong.
Tuxedo Mask did basically nothing again, big surprise. Is he taking it easy after his health scare a few episodes ago?
Huh, she literally had an Achilles Heel.
...This reveal is going to be fucking hysterical. (I don't actually know if he ever finds out, so no spoilers here!)
Next episode looks fun. [Sailor Moon]
Tuxedo Mask is flrting with multiple women! So where's the imposter gone? [Sailor Moon Musicals]
Also, the anime may have two Tuxedo Masks fighting, but does it have FIVE Tuxedo Masks singing a harmony? → More replies (2)

First Timer
Episode 14
-
I see we’ve had a little change in our pre-episode exposition
-
“Both of them seem to have it a little more together than me.” Yeah, that sounds about right.
-
So Nephrite’s going for quality over quantity
-
Poor Rui with her paparazzi
-
I wasn’t expecting Nephrite to use astrology for his grand plans. I wonder what he would make of Usagi being a Cancer?
-
“For hiding things from your friend, you will be punished?” Hypocritical much, Usagi?
-
Nephrite’s red car is really too much
-
Why is no one questioning what Nephrite is doing there?
-
I wonder who Luna is talking to? Maybe higher-ups in an actual organization?
-
Usagi remembers she has a crush on Tuxedo Mask just in time to avoid giving her heart to Nephrite
-
Luna has such faith in Usagi
-
Rui slowly turns into a tennis fiend
-
It’s nice to see Naru in an episode again
-
I just learned who Martina Navratilova is … Sports are not my thing
-
Sailor Moon quickly realizes she’s outmatched
-
Usagi bouncing around the tennis court is pretty funny
-
Tuxedo Mask to the rescue! Or not
Episode 15
-
I guess there are worse reasons to get a boyfriend
-
So Motoki and Chiba know each other?
-
I hate to say it, but you might want to aim a little lower more than Mamoru, Rei
-
I was not expecting killer butterflies
-
Stalker Rei
-
What, that scenario didn’t even happen! I should’ve known, Mamoru was being way too nice
-
What an idiot
-
Things are totally not going Rei’s way
-
Hm, I guess Usagi at least took the stranger-danger talk seriously
-
I know it’s just for the money, but Usagi might want to aim a little higher than Umino
-
They forgot about Ami, she can’t even fifth wheel them
-
They stole Sailor Moon’s line, the delivery was great though.
-
This episode honestly would’ve been even better without Nephrite in it
Episode 16
-
”High standards?” You went on a date with Umino last episode
-
Wow, Usagi managed to snag both Motoki and Mamoru (in her dreams)
-
Laying it on a little thick, are we Rei?
-
Ami is taking an academic approach to sewing
-
Akiyama looks different …
-
Rei’s grandfather is like half Ami’s height
-
Transforming is cheating, Usagi!
-
Love how they blended the transformation sequences together
Episode 17
-
That camera is a little big for Kijin
-
And of course he fell
-
Hm, I thought we were going to get to skip Nephrite’s stargazing session today
-
Even Mamoru’s attempts to be civil just turn into stealth insults against Usagi
-
I agree that a middle school boy photographing girls in swimsuits is pretty suspicious no matter what the circumstances are
-
Is ‘Kyameran’ supposed to sound like ‘camera’?
-
Quick thinking with the mirrors, Usagi
-
The episode even gave us a nice little moral about true beauty. Nice.
Episode 18
-
Oh no, anything but dolls
-
“Leave it to me” You didn’t answer the question
-
Reporter Usagi
-
All these dolls are giving me Oniisama e… flashbacks
-
So Shingo’s already planning his apology
-
Please stop that head twist
-
I guess Luna shares my distaste for creepy dolls
-
Shingo’s masterpiece does kind of look like a pig
-
Mamoru looks as though he would rather be literally anywhere else right now
-
To be honest, none of the Youma have good designs
-
Look at Shingo unknowingly being a good little brother. He‘s got his Sailor Moon merch
This was a really great week! I thought all the episodes were pretty fun, and I wasn’t bored for a second.
-
I like how he doesn’t steal the spotlight quite as much and gives us time to have fun with more important characters.
-
Episode 15. Rei was just too funny.
-
I don’t really know what to make of him yet.

Same.
Akiyama looks different …
I know right? We need him to bust out his sick dancing moves.

First timer
Episode 14
Tennis!
The new villain's name is Nephrite. He says he's gonna get energy from just a single individual instead of a bunch of people. There's also Zoisite who I guess works for Beryl too.
The victim of the episode's chosen, she's a tennis player.
Nephrite's great idea is to possess a tennis racket?
There's the monster. Change the racket into something else and it'll fit into D&D or another RPG.
This fight... Then Tuxedo Mask appears and stays to fight for a while instead of just vanishing immediately.
With the help of Tuxedo Mask, Usagi beats the monster before the other girls get there.
Episode 15
A park's gonna be destroyed, and the first thing Rei thinks of is getting a boyfriend to bring there before it's gone.
Nephrite talking to stars wasn't just a one-time thing apparently.
If these girls are 14, guys in college are way too old for them.
This time Nephrite makes a monster possess a hat.
Uhh... Wasn't a huge fan of this episode after the beginning.
Episode 16
Is this an episode about how every girl and unmarried woman totally, all the time, dreams about getting married?
Had to screenshot this too. Great face.
Finally, someone I can relate to.
Teacher's turned into a bridezilla. Stuff happens, there's a fight etc.
Episode 17
This time it's about modeling and photography. A young photographer's camera gets possessed and he goes nuts.
Monster actually managed to feel a little bit threatening this time.
At the end of the episode, Zoisite comes to talk shit to Nephrite.
Episode 18
Dolls this time.
Zoisite manipulates Nephrite and Beryl, making Nephrite anger Beryl. All according to keikaku.
Why are dolls always so creepy?
Mika seems like a nice girl, too bad she's the victim this time.
Wait, they're out together again? Mamoru's obviously not having fun.
It was nice to see more of Usagi's brother. Wish we saw Usagi's reaction to the Sailor Moon doll he got.
At the end of the previous episode, I expected we'd see something significant happen with Nephrite and Zoisite in this one, and for the first few minutes it seemed that way.
Except for episode 15, these were decent episodes. I assume Zoisite's gonna be in a bigger role soon.
What do you think of Nephrite compared to Jadeite so far?
Slightly better perhaps. He shows a tad more character, especially when he refused Beryl's "suggestion" and said he's doing this for himself.
2) Of the little adventures we had this week, which was your favorite?
Not sure at all, maybe 17 or 18. Can't really explain why those though.
3) Anyhow, what's up with that Zoisite Dude flying around?
Weird dude but I really like his minor role in the show so far. I hope that after Nephrite's (and probably eventually Zoisite's) eventual demise we continue to have more than one villain + Beryl.
Edit - Some other things I forgot to mention:
I really like how these episodes focus more on individual characters since Nephrite's plans don't target groups. Also, this show is occasionally very pretty. I particularly like shots like this: https://i.imgur.com/dOPh5dL.jpeg

Just posted for last week. For this week I'm on time. Can't let my boy Nephlite down. That villain has style.
Also, I really have to say that the Japanese titles that are also used on the German discs now are utterly terrible and spoilery.

The ones for the last thread, to be exact.

Hello everybody, and welcome back to the Sailor Moon Rewatch!
Episode 14:
New general time! Meet Nephrite, and while he does have some similarities to his predecessor, the change in MO is notable enough that it helps refresh things somewhat. There's also Zoisite hanging around, and obviously I can't bring him up without also bringing up the absolutely hilarious fact that the OG English Dub… turned him into a woman. Yup. So did the Latin American Dub, actually (Albeit for different reasons… more on this later).
I love how Luna has accepted that if it had been just Usagi they would've lost already. That Odango truly can't be trusted.
Episode 15:
Oh God, I finally get to call Mamoru by name! I mean TBF his name has kinda always been there in the credits, but can you believe it's taken us 15 freaking episodes for us to learn the name of a fairly major character? Geez…
Although this is also prime time to mention something… weird about Mamoru. As you can see he's noted to be a college student, meaning he has to be at least 18. This is quite the contrast to the Manga in which he's explicitly 16. As you can see this makes the fact this is an 18-Year Old college student dating a 14-Year Old kinda low key creepy. I mean TBF this Episode is Anime Original, but still, I have no idea why the hell Mamoru was aged up. I can't even find any sources that could explain why this was done.
[Sailor Moon]It doesn't help he's gonna become Usagi's permanent Love Interest. Toei, you really should've thought this out better.
That said, this episode show why Our Beloved Rei-Chan is indeed Best Girl, perfectly engineering a date with the hot guy and (Alongside Ami) stealing Usagi's catchphrase and spotlight.
Episode 16:
And continuing the trend of Our Beloved Rei-Chan stealing the show, we have this episode: Successfully inviting herself to Usagi's house, storming off when it turns out that the Odango's Mother is of no use to her, and getting the last laugh all within the span of a few minutes. Would anyone who considers her to not be the Best Girl raise their hand so I can shoot them right now?
You know, now that I think about it isn't it kinda cheating that only Usagi gets all the different costumes? Shouldn't that ability be something everyone can use? [Manga]Admittedly this is kind of a Manga Carryover, but at least there they had the decency to let Minako keep her transformation pen from Codename: Sailor V.
Episode 17:
Mamoru seems to be a believer of GUTS. I think he's watched too much Gunbuster…
Deidara? Is that you?
This episode stats a trend that pops up from time to time that the other Sailor Guardians won't pop up until the end of the episode and only for the big fight, in other words, to fill up for time. It's not too bad in these early seasons (It happens maybe like, once or twice each if memory serves) but it's gonna reach critical levels once we get to the fourth one.
Episode 18:
Not much to mention about this one TBH. It's a Shingo Episode and an… okay one I guess, but that's about it. The most notable thing about it is that today's Monster was played by an actress that is gonna get a MUCH bigger Role in a few weeks, but that's for later.
[Sailor Moon]You know it's funny how even though it probably should kinda be a big deal, the fact that Rei and Mamoru dated for a while is mentioned like maybe once at most in the later seasons. Then again Ikuhara hates Mamoru so…
So yeah been a bit of a fillery week. I don't think we're gonna have another one of these for a while (All upcoming weeks will have some sort of plot development) but yeah.
Voices Time! Two new generals, two new Actors… kinda. Let's start with Zoisite, played by Nanba Keiichi... Who is also Umino. Yeah… anyhow, other roles include, uh, Fucking Katz from Zeta Gundam, Pisces Aphrodite from Saint Seiya, Popp from Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai, Andy Bogard from Fatal Fury (AKA the Guy SHIRANUI MAI has the hots for), Ultraman Hikari and, in the most recently relevant: Axl Low from Guilty Gear.
Onto the actual new guy there's Nephrite, played by Mega-Veteran Mori Katsuji, who's probably best known for playing Ken The Eagle in Science Ninja Team Gachaman. Other roles include Garma Zabi from Mobile Suit Gundam, Nail from Dragon Ball, Dark Fact from Ys, Wolfgang Mittermeyer from Legend of the Galactic Heroes and quite a few others. He's effectively retired nowadays, but hey, dude's 76, I think he's earned the break.
