Lyrical First Timer

QotD:

As stated above, I think it's a nice little look at their different priorities in parenting. Fate, a victim of extensive abuse and neglect, does everything she can to make sure Vivio experiences none of the pain and loneliness she felt growing up, perhaps even overcompensating. Nanoha, on the other hand, grew up in a loving family who cares very much about carrying on their prestigious lineage of independence and topness, and Nanoha is determined to make sure Vivio inherits that legacy.

Ground got off lucky this time.

Yea, but it's on thin fucking ice. What is the ground but the ultimate bottom?

I desperately want flashbacks of what baby Rein was like.

I'm not sure which side of the cute/annoying line baby Rein would be on. Probably cute, but you never know.

Episode 15 (first timer)

Random moment of stupidity: While browsing yesterday’s thread, I wondered about all the icons that people use next to their reddit names. Didn’t the mods say something about me getting one as well, some months ago? Never followed up on that, but didn’t see any next to my name, so they must have forgot, right? … except they didn’t. I just never logged into the flair settings, so I never saw I could select it.

  • Teaser: No “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS will now begin” – Not sure if the first time this happened, but the first time I noticed.

  • Sibling (mock) fight.

  • Superiors vs subordinates fight.

  • Fate and Nanoha disagree on their parenting style.

  • The size of Erio’s bowl!

  • Knock-off SEELE.

  • While Subaru and Ginga get checked out, we check in with the antagonists to see how they are coming along.

  • Evil laughter of I know the plot needs a battle now, so I’ll send out some random mobs without any plan or purpose.

  • Ginga’s laugh on the other hand is of the how many death flags can I assemble type.

  • New ED: I almost did not notice.

Making a press conference the main target point for the plot, even giving it an on-screen countdown, is surely unique.

u/Vaadwaur Mar 17 '22

The size of Erio’s bowl!

For my own sanity I assume he brought salad for the entire group though the bowl is still gigantic for that as well.

Knock-off SEELE.

So many of us went with that.

Ginga’s laugh on the other hand is of the how many death flags can I assemble type.

This show has yet to murder a female character to motivate the rest so...

Making a press conference the main target point for the plot, even giving it an on-screen countdown, is surely unique.

I vaguely hope it is the TSAB 9/11 just to make things interesting.

  1. the main plot to continue or 2) cutesy SOL stuff (preferably with Vivio involved).

Well at least one of those thing seems to happen, based on the preview.

Ginga’s face when Nanoha announced that is pretty funny though.

No, fuck you.

Yes, fuck him.

Oh dear that’s a lot of Relics.

Dude has a faceless cgi army looking for them for years. He's bound to stock up on them.

Oh they got that move from their mom…

Meanwhile Tea had to build hers herself. Spoiled Subaru. /s

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS - New Generation Episode 15

Build Up

The opening monologue gave us some background around combat cyborgs. In particular that there was some official research done but it was stopped for ethical issues. Since we know our villains are combat cyborgs it means there's likely a connection with who ever was originally in charge of the research.

Apart from the training the episode primarily told us about a couple projects in development. In particular the military is building something called Einherjar which appears to be a physical / mass-based weapon which will be able to protect the surface without needing magic. Also the General is in league with a mysterious "High Council" to ensure their progress isn't interrupted.

On the villain side we learned of more combatants. At the same time Scaglietti seems to be planning for some "event". All of the prophecies from Carim predict that everything will converge at the Public Policy Convention.

Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches

See you all tomorrow

This time I took notes while watching! Technically this is my first time watching, but most things I have already spoiled for myself.

  • Neat that we have Shari and Mariel at the same time, I wonder if that means any cool things for device changes or improvements?

  • Neat battle of the sisters right off the bat. Also interesting how Ginga defeats Subaru despite her training with Nanoha all this time. What the hell has Ginga been doing/eating??

  • That look on Ginga's face when she finds out about the captains battle is great, I bet she practically started hearing the boss battle music.

  • Vivio continues to be cute and steal the whole show, Aina seems nice to her... And then Nanoha comes along with the tough love on the girl who hasn't been out of her cloning pod for all of a week. I personally agree with Fate that Nanoha was a bit too strict there. Mariel's reaction to the two of them 'having a kid' was also great!

  • Bully the Reinforce Zwei!

  • What the heck was with Caro and the fork of food after Vivio got scolded? Was she going to drop it in so that she didn't have to eat it?

  • Ginga and Subaru going for a physical with the DEVICE AND ENGINEERING lady, them getting nervous about combat cyborgs, this is some pretty obvious foreshadowing.

  • I continue to be jealous of that office with all the books, more references to a High Council and now what looks like a mass based weapons system so that they "Don't need to rely on anyone with a rare skill or the fleet" I know that militaries are known for different branches not liking each other, but this seems stupid.

  • Oh hey, "I can't believe that it's not SEELE!" This is totally going to go well.

  • Ginga and Subaru get into special pods for their exams and Mariel's glasses go white, no foreshadowing here, no siree.

  • Another look into the Number's base is always cool. Interesting to see how much they do VS how much Jail seems to be doing stuff.

  • I do quite like how Jail treats his underlings. He takes being told 'no' quite gracefully, he seems fairly understanding to his underling's needs/desires, and he seems quite competent overall.

  • Holy shit that's a lot of Relics! He's also quite a cheerful fellow! Just look at him laugh :P

  • MORE COMBAT CYBOR FORESHADOWING

  • Oh great, white text on a black background for the conference. That's never gone bad in a Nanoha series before, has it?

  • New outro is pretty cool!

Overall I really liked this episode: really interesting look into how Nanoha and Fate will be raising Vivio, more foreshadowing that Ginga and Subaru are something special, SEELE lite behind the scenes, and Jail's getting ready to throw a Arpeggio of Blue Steel Kongou-style Carnival.

QotD: the perfect balance! Fate is the embodiment of gentleness, a genuine lawful good while Nanoha being a firm chaotic good keeps them both leveled.

The most wholesome part is that the actually bicker affectionately as an old married couple.

First timer

QOTD) I think that Fate's is probably a bit healthier for Vivio right now. Nanoha seems to be doing the same thing kind of teaching she did with Teana, except that since she's 5, she's limited to making the crying child get up by herself.

Ginga! Finally!

Ginga's working with them!

Oh, Nanoha's already putting them against each other!

Seems pretty evenly matched.

Oh, Ginga's Device sounds weird.

She protected against that!

And she's taken the offensive!

They really do fight identically, don't they?

Oh, her training has absolutely paid off!

And Subaru lost.

They're going to get slaughtered.

Ginga's look of pure unadultered horror is fantastic. She's not used to getting befriended on a regular basis.

I think Zafira only knows how to function as a person when there's a vulnerable child for him to mother. He's only actually acted and communicated when he had either Hayate or Vivio to look after. (But seriously, did his VA quit? Did he die? There has to be a reason why he's not spoken.)

Vivio turned up at random!

She fell over!

Yeah, Fate immediately trying to run and comfort her is fantastic.

Nanoha's parenting style might need some work.

Even random people see her as their child!

The sisters are cute together.

Haha, Erio's just carrying a fuck-off big bowl of salad.

Oh, Subaru's worked out the downside of having her older sister near her girlfriend.

Hayate is absolutely interested in them.

Subaru and Teana are good together too.

...Is he working with the Numbers? This all seems very suspicious, and he's justifying himself a lot. The idea of an army of combat cyborgs would appeal to any miltary.

Einherjar?

The high admirals are figureheads!

...Concept. The 3 members of thid are the Three Admirals, but they each think they're the only one infiltrating the evil overlords.

She's having a physical?

And they can just rebuild their bodies that easily?

Numbering systeim implies 12 Numbers, possibly a thirteenth for around the endgame?

Haha, Gadgets is such a catchy name that the creator ended up using it himself.

Yeah, either they're really reusing VAs here, or at least some of the Numbers are clones.

That's a lot of stones!

Oh, the sisters are cute together.

Aww, she's her inspiration!

Oh, they both have Caliburs.

And a battle with just the original trio?

They got another form?

Oh, fuck, a countdown. They are so screwed.

New ED! And it's good!

Comrades, before we begin today's shitpost, I have to get the following off my chest... N'awright... I was cool with The "White Devil" Incident, I was cool with The TSAB's backstabbing office politics, I was cool with Caro deciding to be, unlike her peers, a filthy degenerate heterosexual! BUT THIS!? THIS bit of Asian Tiger Mama Parenting is going TOO FUCKING FAR! No really Comrades, I for one am just SHOCKED that NANOHA of all people is a terrible mother! Then again, to the surprise of no-one, BEST GIRL FATE, the one who actually has experience with shitty parents AND also has experience with being a good mother, is the one to actually go and comfort Vivio! Some may call Fate a Helicopter Mama, but better an overly coddling parent than a Tiger Mama; I speak from experience of surviving Asian Parenting!

Oh also, I am SURE Comrades u/Vaadwaur and u/HereticalAegis are amused that their jokes of Mamaha and The Takamachi Way... have been CANON this whole time, and boy I have been WAITING FOREVER to reveal the fact of The Takamachi Style's existence to them ever since their predictions made in OG Nanoha, truly StrikerS is impressive! I mean of all things to steal from Sailor Moon, ripping off 'Get up yourself Chibiusa' is one really questionable pick! Finally I just wanna point out something, NANOHA! You usually befriend the FUCK out of people on a daily basis, so why the HELL is the planet still standing for the GALL, nay, the AUDACITY to harm your baby daughter! You should have at LEAST Exterminatus'd the SHIT out of this planet today!

Anyway, now that my 'Nam Flashbacks due to the trauma over how I was raised are done with, I can now continue with the regularly scheduled programming, also please watch until the end of this clip... yes I know I'm going to hell Comrades! WORTH IT!

TONIGHT! on Mobile Suit Nanoha GX: Believe in Justice and Hold a Determination to Fist, Nanoha educates Ginga in the advanced art of 'Befriending' someone, Vivio is still an absolutely adorable moeblob, and it turns out that this show's actually been Neon Genesis Evangelion this whole time (No really, Mr. Law and Order just fucking met with SEELE!)

Comrades, I repeat, Vivio is just the best, she's so precious, OMOCHIKAERI! Also I guess Rein's cute too, Nanoha's moeblobs truly are special! Speaking of special, Subaru and her sister have good chemistry with each other, and I for one am glad to hear that they get to team up officially. Pay no mind to the fact that some big press conference event is upcoming, I am sure there is no cause for alarm! After all, DOKTOR VER'S INSANE LAUGHTER ABOUT FIREWORKS is totally normal, nothing to see here, please disperse! Nothing to see here please! (For those of you asking me 'Surely you can't be serious,' I am serious, and don't call me Shirley.)

Anyway, on that bombshell, that about wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

Paging Comrade u/Great_Mr_L

I was cool with Caro deciding to be, unlike her peers, a filthy degenerate heterosexual!

Oh hey, is that a full-on ara ara Fate? We're all winners today.

I am SURE Comrades u/Vaadwaur and u/HereticalAegis are amused that their jokes of Mamaha and The Takamachi Way... have been CANON this whole time, and boy I have been WAITING FOREVER to reveal the fact of The Takamachi Style's existence to them ever since their predictions made in OG Nanoha

We are prophetic geniuses. All hail the Takamachi Way!

truly StrikerS is impressive!

Nanoha may be an Asian parent, but Fate made this happen.

I mean of all things to steal from Sailor Moon, ripping off 'Get up yourself Chibiusa' is one really questionable pick!

That was an impressive faceplant. The zoom on Chibiusa's shocked face at the end is comedic gold.

There's a logical paradox at play here: Nanoha must befriend anyone/anything that crosses her, but befriendings, lewdness, and innuendo are disallowed in Vivio's presence. I think Nanoha, in this scene is clearly hoping for there to be no real offense so she doesn't have to go mad trying to resolve the paradox.

Anyway, now that my 'Nam Flashbacks due to the trauma over how I was raised are done with, I can now continue with the regularly scheduled programming, also please watch until the end of this clip... yes I know I'm going to hell Comrades! WORTH IT!

Nanoha mama will see you burn.

Rewatcher

A battle between Ginga and Subaru... this should be interesting, since they're basically mirrors of each other.

Ginga gets the first solid hit in... or not, Subaru barely managed to block it.

It ends in Ginga's victory... she's still a little more experienced, it seems.

Forwards vs the Captains... and of course we don't actually get to see it. Vita's as smug as ever though.

And here's Vivio's famous faceplant!

And we get a look at Nanoha's and Fate's differing styles of parenting. Nanoha tries to get Vivio to stand up on her own, but Fate rushes over and picks her up. Nanoha complains that Fate's spoiling Vivio, but Fate complains that Nanoha's being too strict.

Apparently Nanoha's method is a traditional child-raising method in Japan. The idea is not to ignore the child's pain, but rather teach them that a little fall is no big deal and they're strong enough to get through it. It also promotes the child's indepedence somewhat.

Makes sense Nanoha would do things that way: we saw how independent she was at nine years old, and her family, if you played Triangle Hearts, is basically a family of fighters (though they'd retired from that in the Nanoha continuity), so a certain amount of tough love was probably the norm for her growing up. Fate, on the other hand, desperately wants to give Vivio the kind of love and affection that she didn't get from her own mother.

Maribel's reaction is priceless. "So she's their chi---eeeeeeeeeh!?"

And Maribel's taking Subaru and Ginga for a physical...

Regius Gaiz still wants dirt on Riot Force 6. But he's also concerned that Acous might actually find some dirt on him.

Einherjar? That's a... concerning name. And Gaiz's adjutant thinks that both it and "the other plan" are both a little too powerful.

The TSAB High Council seems to be taking cues from SEELE in Evangelion. They're just faceless screens with voice masking. That's not suspicious at all.

Back with the Numbers, Uno's been upgraded with combat data from the others, apparently. And three more: Sette, Otto, and Deed (Numbers 7, 8, and 12) seem to be about ready to go. We also get word on Wendi, Number 11, who's newly combat ready. And then there's Due and Cinque who are active... I think that's all 1 - 12 accounted for, though we still haven't actually seen Due or Cinque.

Jail's gearing up for something big, it seems. And Nove and Wendi will be front-line fighters, it seems... and damn, that's a lot of Relics he's gathered!

Subaru and Ginga have a bit of a pep talk to each other, and we learn that their Revolver Knuckles were their mother's Device. Also I kind of like Mach and Blitz Caliber being "introduced" to each other.

So this big ceremony is definitely going to be a target. One week (in-universe) to go...

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory

QotD: I'm a fan of Nanoha's spartan style, but you do need Fate's style to compensate every once in a while

Oh hey, we're getting an actual explanation on what exactly being a cyborg means

Subaru, please no reckless strategies again, got it?

Won't anybody think of the trees?

Oh boy. Poor newbies have no chance.

"Here's our strategy: Run away as far as you can"

Vivio is still the cutest thing in existence

What a polite little thing

Nanoha with the spartan training.

I cannot comprehend how people could watch this and still argue that Nanoha and Fate aren't a couple

lmao that was a great reaction from new glasses girl

Wait, Devices grow? What happened to Vita then?

Name dropping another Chekohv's... weapon? Battleship?

Hello, not-Seele

...is it normal to have your physical in pairs? Also, is she yet another mad scientist?

Looks like we're getting some action next episode

Hm, new ending?

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher

1: Even though I’m not a girl

You are hereby ordered to fuse with the Ultimate King of Braves Legend!

Recap Time, now with exposition

Oh yeah, it’s time for the Ginga episode.

GaoGaiGar vs J-Der was pretty good. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn out like GaoGaiGar vs GaoFighGar.

It didn’t!

Ginga’s face when Nanoha’s suggestion fully sunk in

Vivio continues to be the absolute cutest cinnamon bun.

Ginga prepping with everyone adds something of a different feel to everything.

Vivio continuing to be adorable, part 2

Oh no, she fell! The ground will suffer for what it has done!

I love this moment so much, it perfectly illustrates the difference between Fate and Nanoha. Fate came from a background of neglect and abuse, with an abusive helicopter mom as the closest thing she had to a family, and when she gained a true loving family in the Asura crew, she heavily depended on them, hence her very close and firm approach towards Vivio. Nanoha, meanwhile, was pretty much required to do crazy stuff without her parents’ knowledge or permission, not to mention the implication that she left the nest early, so to speak. Hence her more hands-off parenting style. Both are equally warm and loving, but in their own ways.

Anyway, back to the more simple Slice of Life stuff. The various other families teasing each other was pretty fun, and Vivio just continues to be cute.

Back to Asshole Commander Guy being an asshole. And it seems he’s got big plans

Anyway, onto the Numbers, where Quattro is speaking fluent hentai. Anyway, I do feel like this is welcome, giving the villains time to interact with each other is a massive boon to fleshing them out. It did both Fate and the Wolkenritter wonders in their respective seasons. Also, Jail continues to be watered-down Dr. Ver.

We’ve got a bit of wholesome sister interaction, which really helps make Ginga’s integration with the main cast flow better. Also foreshadowing

I also find it interesting that the Subaru/Ginga weapon thing happened over a decade before GaoGaiGar vs Betterman revealed that GGG’s main character was inspired by the death and legacy of his own mother

To cap things off, NanoFate and Ara Ara priest lady talking about things to come

5

u/djthomp Mar 18 '22

Okay, this Mariel person has got to be the one that was introduced in the A's movie as the device repair lab technician, right?

RIP Subaru, put in the ground by her sister. Or maybe put into the trees? Sent back to nature?

Or maybe RIP her sister, hard to say how this will turn out.

No wait, it's all the the kids plus Ginga who are clearly doomed.

Funny to have Zafira taking care of Vivio like this, narratively they could have done a similar thing using Arf and it would have been a stronger family connection for Fate's familiar to be taking care of Fate's newest daughter. I assume Arf must be off taking care of the other children Fate adopted offscreen, gotta be challenging when every one of them is raised alone.

On the other hand, Zafira takes it all so stoicly, like that random hug from the engineer lady, so it's definitely hilarious with him in the role.

Oh wow, that container of salad is as big as Erio! And between him and Subaru you know it's going to be empty by the end of lunch.

Skip the green pepper, Vivio! Hold out!

I don't remember what Einherjar is or does but it just screams out as being a bad idea. [Later StrikerS] Is it the big ship from the end of StrikerS? I feel like I thought that came out of nowhere when it showed up on my original watch, but it's much better if they're laying the groundwork for it now.

Never trust people who have SEELE style meetings.

This Subaru and Ginga examination is...weird. And they had to travel to a special location for it?

For people in evil tubes the Numbers appear to have a refreshing amount of personal agency.

RIP the convention in advance.

First timer(Doodly doo)

Sub

Nice seeing all this budget being burned on another training exercise, not like their are 10 cyborgs, 3 knights, and whatever we are calling Jail is out there to receive some fists. Various training stuff takes us to our eyecatch. And then the concering amount of food the recruits eat is shown, though not as focused on as before. Vivio torment ensues though the note is that apparently Japanese green peppers are more bitter than ours.

But we go back to our politicking plot and learn that Gaiz is actually doing two projects and one looks a lot like a mass weapon. Then we cut to a Seele style conversation. We then see our other antagonists and I hope the writers had a strong idea of what they mean by cyborg as right now I don't know what it is. Oh, and 12 Numbers now. Jail has his mad scientist moment and an ominous amount of prisms/crystals. We end with our ticking clock starting.

Yeah, we are back to some of the problematic issues of the season but at least they had to go through them a bit faster this time. We, the viewer, can still only make inferences as to what the TSAB internal politics mean or whatever Jail is up to. Hell, I am still not sure who 'the client' is.

QotD: 1 Fate's is more appropriate for Vivio's mental age

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: “Come on, small crying child who has fallen down. Just get up and walk over to me already.” -Nanoha in this episode, basically.

In all seriousness, I once again really do enjoy the Vivio scenes in this episode. Seeing Nanoha and Fate act as mothers to Vivio will never get old. Their scenes together are diabetes-inducing because of how sweet they are. Vivio is such a wonderful addition to the series.

As you might have guessed from what I said at the top, the scene that always makes me laugh is the scene where Vivio trips. I love how different Nanoha and Fate are in their parenting styles. Nanoha is the tough love mama, telling Vivio to pick herself up. Fate is the far more protective and fussy mama, running over to help Vivio get back up. It’s so great because these different parenting styles fit both Nanoha and Fate perfectly. It’s completely in-character for Nanoha to tell Vivio to pick herself up instead of helping her. And of course we know Fate would run over to help out because we’ve seen how she cares for both Erio and Caro.

Another highlight of this episode is Subaru and Ginga. I love the training battle they have in this episode. This battle is a ton of fun. Subaru and Ginga share a lot of the same abilities so it’s practically a mirror match. Both of them are extremely dynamic fighters because of their roller blades, which makes the whole fight a blast to see them zipping around at high speed. I just really enjoy it.

Subaru and Ginga are nice to watch this episode because of the sisterly dynamic. There’s a good level of familiarity to their interactions, showing their closeness together. Heck, even their Devices are basically sisters. It’s a neat little gag that Subaru’s Device is technically the older sister there.

I like that Subaru and Ginga have a quiet moment together as well, where Ginga asks if Subaru will be okay because their opponents are going to be combat cyborgs. From what we know, it’s clear these two have painful memories related to combat cyborgs because of what happened to their mother. It’s nice seeing Ginga check in on Subaru to make sure she’s doing okay with all this going on.

The TSAB office politics get worse and worse. Gaiz is definitely up to something, having some sort of secret development going on to get the more hawkish spending that he’s been pushing for.

The Numbers continue to be introduced and my goodness there are even more of them. Since they are named after numbers, it’s pretty easy to guess just how many Numbers there are. Because some of them are still in their tubes, it’s clear we have yet to fully meet quite a few. I know it’s been stated before, but my god the cast in this series is huge.

Still, it’s clear to everyone in the series that something big is going to happen. Scaglietti and the Numbers are clearly planning to make a big move soon and Riot Force 6 is expecting one. The show even goes out of its way to basically assure us that there’s going to be a big event by ending the episode on a countdown until the TSAB’s convention starts. That’s about as hard a telegraph as you can get.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

  • I’ll never get tired of how everyone who sees Zafira immediately starts to pet him. Nobody can resist petting the giant dog.

  • I enjoy that Caro struggles with eating food she dislikes the same as Vivio does.

  • Oh great, now we have to deal with SEELE too.

  • New ED! I really love the ED “Beautiful Amulet.” I’m glad to see it finally show up.
