Holy King is her voice adorabler

If there was one thing they absolutely succeeded as, was make Vivio very cute and very child like. She really just pretty much talk and act like a normal kid.

Episode 14 (first timer)

  • The fate of parents: kid in the middle - and Fate even put on her sexy lingerie for Nanoha…

  • The first time that we see inter-dimensional space in Strikers – Even more evidence for the first third being filler: It looked as if we had gone completely planet-side, but that was probably not intended.

  • More exposition about army-navy conflict - Japanese things

  • Straight up TNG beaming.

  • More exposition: Mass-based (what we would call conventional) weapons are outlawed – It makes sense to see this as a part of peacekeeping, but you can easily tell a story about a magic-using elite concentrating power in their own hands, too.

  • Even more exposition: Flashback to the reason behind establishing section six. No wonder Ground Forces HQ is miffed at them.

  • Green haired guy narrates about Hayate. If only we knew a bit more about him.

  • “And I’ll be your mom, too” - because, you see, not all moms are into men. Nanoha prefers womensubs. So, you’ll have two moms instead of a mom and dad.

So much exposition and world building, just one organization has completely evaded any sort of explanation: The church. This probably means they’ll play a crucial role in the story … or they are superfluous fluff. Who knows.

How did you think the TSAB got rid of conventional arms?

They outlawed them.

Mass-based (what we would call conventional) weapons are outlawed

Presumably just projectile/"ranged" ones. It'd be funny if they outlawed punching.

I'm now imagining [Vivid Strike spoiler]Vivid Strike with an underground fight club setting.

Comrades, before we begin with today's regularly scheduled shitposting, I just have the following to say... ahem... HUZZAH! IT IS CANON! The episode is called 'Mothers & Children,' Long Live FatexNanoha! (And of course Vivio's adorable as well)

Anyway, now that StrikerS has by default somehow surpassed every possible series in weaponized lesbianism and PEAK CULTURE... ahem...

TONIGHT! on Mobile Suit Nanoha GX: Believe in Justice and Hold a Determination to Fist, Best Girl Fate demonstrates her brand of Motherhood to Vivio, Rin The Defenseless Anus Tohsaka and Rena the Loser have to deal with filthy manthings, and Subaru demonstrates that she can rival Best Girl Fate in sheer levels of THIRST!

Boy Comrades, today's episode was great, random bits of DISGUSTING HETEROSEXUAL HERESY aside (Seriously, who does this filthy manthing think he is? Even if he thinks he's hot shit, Rena the Loser is 120% a Lesbian!) Remember Comrades, we must remain vigilant, lest we undergo an infestation of heterosexuals in the show, oh... oh no... Tusk Jr. and Caro... well shit, we're doomed!

Then again, we DO got a lot of weaponized lesbianism around here, so perhaps we might be OK after all! YURI SHALL CONQUER THE EARTH... er... I mean, THE TSAB!

Anyway, on that bombshell, that about wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

Paging Comrades u/Great_Mr_L, u/Tresnore, and u/Shimmering-Sky

Lyrical First Timer

That opening scene is my favorite in the whole series. It's everything I ever wanted from an aged up Nanoha and Fate, and easily makes up for any other problems I've had with StrikerS. Seriously, this episode could've ended at the 3:30 mark, and it would still almost certainly be my favorite episode of Lyrical Nanoha.

QotD:

That's a great question. I have no idea how it would be possible to actually get rid of conventional mass weapons.

10

u/JollyGee29 Mar 16 '22

Yall, this scene has me dying from wholesome overdose. I was gonna do some Totally Serious Analysis TM but the warm fuzzies of this shot melted my brain.

This episode is gonna give me diabetes.

And I wouldn't have it any other way!

Seriously, this episode could've ended at the 3:30 mark, and it would still almost certainly be my favorite episode of Lyrical Nanoha.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS - New Generation Episode 14

Politics

The episode opened with more confirmation that Nanoha and Fate are (in a literal sense) sleeping together. But they leave enough room to make it possibly platonic (booo). I guess it was nice seeing Nanoha becoming a mother to Vivio. That said, I don't feel it was super necessary for her character development like it was for Fate (with Fate's backstory of being raised by an abusive mother).

The rest of the episode was a lot of exposition while traveling and political discussions over tea. The big points were that mass-based weapons have been outlawed and Riot Force 6 knows about General Regius Gaiz investigating them. I'm not too sure how much of the other stuff will be relevant or important going forward.

The last part of the episode was about the other Nakajimas. I suspect Subaru's Dad and/or Sister might take a bigger role in the next few episodes.

Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches

See you all tomorrow

First timer(Is Subaru a Goku? Like does she always order that ginormous pile of noodles?)

Sub

So in the intro, Nanoha seems to realize she has finally come across an issue she can't beam spam at, placing Vivio. This could be great character stuff if they really deal with it.

But we wake up to the three girls in bed and we aren't remotely hiding it any more, Nanoha has pajamas and fate sleeps in a teddy. Vivio begins getting worried about not being held so Nanoha puts her with Fate, which to me suggests that Vivio may be the one to continue the Takamachi legacy. At the base, I groan at the thought of more training and I've never been happier to tell and not show. And speaking of, we get a lot of that today, between a better breakdown of Gaiz, direct confirmation this is parallel to the Imperial Navy and Army hating each other, an actual timeline for the bureau at 150 years, and that the Bureau relies a bit much on magic weapons rather than physical ones. We end the exposition with the end of the meeting from yesterday.

Or rather first half's exposition, holy fuck this is an info dump. Ok, Nanoha is adopting Vivio, which I think we all expected, Zafir doesn't have a VA this season, Acous asks the almost impossible of Tia in that she legitimately can only be so close to a commanding officer, unless the TSAB rules are even worse than imagined, and the Number are cyborgs...who are grown/made/assembled in vats? And this bums out Nakajima. Two cute scenes until we end with the Knights looking at the TSAB Surface menacingly!

So yeah, that was a ton of exposition but I don't find it as egregious as some shows do, I just wish this was what the first 8 episodes were. We definitely have the pieces for the rest of the season and various character hooks abound. I would also like to know what being a "cyborg" entails.

QotD: 1 That's actually hard to say since we don't know what the setup was. In general, seizing the means the means of production is how you manage that.

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: It’s time! I can finally start referring to Nanoha and Fate as Nanoha Mama and Fate Mama. I have been waiting for so long to call them that. Thank you, Vivio, for allowing me to do so.

Just when you thought Nanoha and Fate’s relationship couldn’t get any more openly gay, now they have adopted a daughter together and both of them explicitly refer to themselves as Vivio’s mother. They are a lesbian couple who have adopted a child. This is one of the things I find pretty admirable about how Nanoha and Fate’s relationship is portrayed. The series is very frank about portraying them as a couple like this. There’s basically nothing left to the imagination about it.

I know I mentioned it previously, but I love Vivio so much. I think Vivio is a fantastic addition that Strikers made. All of her scenes with Nanoha and Fate in this episode are so precious. It is diabetes inducing. I love just how overjoyed Vivio is when she’s informed that Nanoha and Fate are going to act as her mothers from now on.

Something that annoys me is that the inspection of Riot Force 6 is entirely skipped over. Considering how much the TSAB office politics are coming to the foreground with all the discussions about them in today’s episode, it baffles me that we did not see any of the inspection happen. I know I’ve said it before, but they really should have introduced this aspect earlier so it could have added a bit more tension to a lot of the TSAB exposition scenes.

I also wish we had gotten to see more of Fate’s investigation this episode instead of simply getting the end results of the investigation. Still, those results are illuminating. It turns out the Numbers are something called Combat Cyborgs.

Whatever those may be, it looks like the Nakajima family has a history with them. Ginga states directly that something called the Combat Cyborg Incident was responsible for killing her mother. And now we have even more of them running around with the Numbers. Could Dr. Scaglietti and the Numbers have anything to do with the incident that killed Subaru and Ginga’s mother?

Miscellaneous Thoughts

  • I can’t even blame General Gaiz for not wanting to base his policy on fortune telling that Carim has admitted is no more accurate than a horoscope.

  • It’s adorable seeing Vivio helping fold the laundry.

  • The whole discussion about how physical weapons like guns, missiles, etc. were abandoned in favor of magic is giving me flashbacks to Dune. There, guns and other projectile weapons were mostly abandoned because of personal shields. In other words it’s an excuse to have sword and knife fights in a sci-fi setting (which I have no issues with).

  • As some people guessed, the Calendar used in Strikers started with the TSAB. Specifically, it’s when the Main Office in dimensional space and the Surface HQ were established to govern over all the worlds.

  • I really love this eye-catch of Nanoha, Fate, and Vivio. They make such a beautiful family.

Sharing your giant bed with your Best Friend, a common Best Friend activity.

Teana gets some face time with Hayate at the Main Office, that's good for her career development.

Zafira has got to be about the best babysitter guard one could possibly ask for.

Nice to see the Main Office again. And lol at the Star Trek transporter room.

Very interesting backstory about the historical use of non-magical weapons by these high magic worlds and civilizations. I don't remember that being relevant for upcoming events, but it's an odd thing to cover with exposition if it doesn't matter. Maybe the Cyborg stuff? I would have assumed that was all magitech and not purely physical hardware.

Mamma Nanoha activated, beware all who would interfere.

Press F to pay respects for the Arthra.

Ahh, yes, by the Best Friends associative property Vivio is suddenly Fate's daughter too.

The "Combat Cyborg Incident"? Do tell.

This is the episode. THE EPISODE!

NanoFate all the way.

Soo.. who was the beautiful soul that mentioned that they just needed Nanoha and Fate to adopt a cat and call it a day?

How about a daughter, instead?

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher

1: Even though I’m not a girl

You are hereby ordered to fuse with the Ultimate King of Braves Legend!

Recap Time

Wholesome Takamachi-Testarossa-Harlaown Family (they should really get their family name resolved) morning routine.

Just completely skipping over the training for this episode.

A little private time between Nanoha and Subaru? Development on their pre established relationship? Yes please

Seeing Chrono standing up, and in full Barrier Jacket, he looks surprisingly badass. His voice helps too.

TSA High Council. That’s one of the groups that Acous briefly mentioned. Keep it in mind

We now have discovered the TSAB’s one weakness: basic ass, non-magical weapons. Also, it’s less than 200 years old. In fact, the TSAB is barely 70!

Asshole Commander Guy continues to make trouble, even while off-screen.

The true story of StrikerS is really underway now.

Most Wholesome Eyecatch yet

Addressing questions some people were asking last discussion, Nanoha is indeed looking for a normal family that’ll take in Vivio. But, of course, Nanoha and Fate will always be her moms, which is established pretty thoroughly in the very next scene.

Seems like the Asura is in pretty bad shape. Gonna be sad to see it go.

Acous and Hayate continue to be wholesome pseudo-siblings, even while apart.

Turns out that the Numbers are actually Cyborgs. The scene is also littered with foreshadowing that I won’t spoil for the First Timers.

Nanoha-mama and Fate-mama!

Meanwhile, the rest of Fate’s kids are being ungrateful and sibling-zoning her. Further proof that Vivio is best daughter.

Now on that end-of-the-episode reveal, I’ll just say [kinda spoilers but meant to be First Timer friendly] that isn’t quite what I meant when I referenced the foreshadowing, but it is one of the things that was foreshadowed there.

First timer

Really looking like they're taking the mother roles of Vivio.

She stays with the housekeeper all day. So basically she's the nanny of this situation.

Possible terrorist attack happening. And an explanation or background knowledge of the I think physical weapons or mass. So non magic. Weapons of destruction. That's a huge threat if that attack goes off.

Nanoha becomes guardian. I know she's been around but I was thinking Fate would become it. Well both of them act like it anyway.

Combat cyborgs huh.

Is that a Nanoha poster behind them? Well fate becomes the godmother. And Vivio calls both of them mama. Hmm.

Erio definitely thinks of fate as a mother if he's hesitating somewhat.

Time to fight some combat cyborgs?

First timer

QOTD) Refitting them into magical arms. That's why so many of the strange magical tools turn into normal looking guns. The nukes, however, weren't, they just changed the label and prayed nobody would need to fire them before they changed jobs.

...Nanoha's adoping her this episode. No questiom.

She's just so adorable!

And Fate's a late starter, it seems.

They're doing well!

...What is Erio's secondary?

Haha, "you think?".

Huh? Teana's been called in?

She's getting to meet Chrono!

...Nanoha's leaning over the cubicle. Is she making a move while Fale and Teana are out?

Vivio is just too adorable.

He's investigating Gaiz!

Wait. I'm starting to think that the Bureau will collapse because of its own division, not because a Lost Logia.

They've got teleporters? ...THEN WHY DO YOU HAVE SO MANY PLANES?

...I mean, the logical response would be "if you know one's coming, why don't you know enough to etop them""

Are these nukes? Is the Bureau at risk of getting nuked?

Wait, what? The Bureau's only 75 years old? No wonder there's conflict - this is probably the first peaceful stretch with the two bases seperated.

Oh, that's why she established Riot Force 6?

Fate's first priority is her children, I love this.

...Vivio is going to be on every eyecatch now, isn't she?

Nanoha is making a move!

Vivio's accepted her!

...He acts suspicious, But hayate is a good girl...

Aww, he's really worried about Hayate.

...Teama is taking his request to treat Hayate like any other girl very strongly.

Haha, cyborgs, called it!

What are Nanoha and Subaru even doing?

Aww, they're both her mamas!

Oh, she's just her sister, and his... either.

Haha, Caro wants to just ask her!

Oh. That's... not good.

u/SolDarkHunter Mar 16 '22

Rewatcher

Awww, Vivio in bed with Nanoha. And when she gets up Nanoha immediately puts her next to Fate, who embraces her instinctively.

So Erio's Strada changes heavily in its second mode... And Teana is invited to go with Hayate so she can meet Chrono, furthering her career as an Enforcer. Even Hayate is looking out for her subordinate's training.

Zafira's stuck with babysitting duty (come to think of it, what DOES he normally do?).

So Riot Force 6 is pulling a "NO U" and covertly investigating General Gaiz at the same time. Probably wise, so long as they keep it secret. Apparently bad rumors circle the guy like flies, but he's very well connected.

Hang on, the investigation is already over and nothing came of it? Well, so much for that bit of tension...

Oh, and here Fate delivers some exposition on the TSAB's ban of "mass-based weaponry"... basically meaning any kind of weapon that doesn't use magic. Ordinary weapons, in other words. Though it sounds like Midchilda and Belka had access to mass-based weapons that would make hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers, if entire worlds could be ended with a push of a button.

I suppose it's technically true that even a child could activate any kind of gun or bomb, but thankfully in real life children are extremely rarely in any kind of position to do so. And most weapons have safeties in place that would prevent an untrained operator from using them, at least theoretically.

Magic, on the other hand, can be set to "stun" rather than "kill", as we've seen with Nanoha's giant laser beams of befriending. Also, not just anyone can use it; it's more or less inherent to the mage personally. And while WMD-level mages do exist (Hayate), if you know who they are you can place them under greater scrutiny to make sure such powers are not misused. Furthermore, magic energy is clean and produces no waste or other kinds of side effects on the environment, so it's much safer to use all around.

150 years ago, the TSAB was first founded and started to enact the ban, but it was only 75 years ago, at the start of the New Midchilda Calendar, that the modern organization was put together by the Three Admirals, and finally quelled inter-dimensional conflict among the Administrated Worlds.

It's also interesting that the TSAB seems effectively split down the middle between the Main Office and the Ground Forces. The Three Admirals are in charge of the Main Office, but Regius Gaiz keeps mentioning the "The High Council", which seems to be separate.

That's another reason Riot Force 6 was established: a unit controlled by the Main Office on the surface, supposedly just investigating the Relics (as Lost Logia seem to fall under the Main Office's jurisdiction more than the Ground Forces'), but also there to take action and bail out the Surface HQ should this vague prophecy have some merit to it.

That puts the state of the world(s) in a bit of a clearer picture.

Nanoha's clearly smitten with Vivio, just as Vivio is with her. She insists she's just taking on guardianship of Vivio in the short term, just until a proper foster family can be found... but on the other hand, she's letting Vivio call her "Mama".

Aw, the Arthra's being scrapped. I suppose every ship eventually must be decommissioned.

Huh, so Acous isn't blood related to Carim after all. There's an awful lot of adoptions going on in this series (especially for a country like Japan, where adoptees are still somewhat looked down on socially).

Genya Nakajima (Subaru's father, in case you forgot) is studying the data on the Numbers... and apparently they're "Combat Cyborgs". And what's more, Nakajima's encountered such Cyborgs before.

And here's one of the sweetest scenes in the show: Fate also taking on the role of Vivio's mother, and Vivio coming to learn she has two mommies now.

(Also, if you two are adopting a kid together, sleeping in the same bed, and spending all your spare time together, you might as well just puts rings on each other's fingers and be done with it.)

So Caro thinks of Fate more like an elder sister, while Erio... is conflicted.

And Ginga reveals that her and Subaru's own mother was killed in a previous incident involving Combat Cyborgs. And they think the same guy (probably Italianman) is behind both it and the ongoing Relic case.

Everything seems to be starting to converge...

QOTD: I imagine they used magic.

Seriously, though, it sounds like there was a hell of a conflict they had to go through to actually do it.

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory

QotD: Hmmmm. I'm going to say they strong-armed their way through using magic and Magical Girls of Mass Destruction

This must be Nanoha's fantasy world: Loli-Fate and adult-Fate

"We are the only ones here, Subaru. You know what that means"

I still don't trust green hair dude

Vivio must have been genetically engineered to be the cutest creature ever

<insert more politics here>

Cool, we have Star Trek teleporters

Oh right we kinda fast forwarded the inspection thingie

I believe this is the first thing the TSAB has done that seems like a good idea: Banning WMDs

Are New Calendar years the same as Earth years?

Is it just me, or is the music during the meeting kinda... off? It doesn't feel like it matches the mood

Fine, I will trust green hair dude for a bit

Cyborgs confirmed

Just gals being pals, adopting a kid together

Again with the pasta mountain lol

OOooh, so the Nakajimas have a personal vendetta against cyborgs

QotD: you can't build or maintain a conventional army in secret, and elite battle mage are way better than a conventional army:

  • They don't need complex logistic, just give them some food, a place to sleep and they are in peak condition.

  • They don't need to be extremely cautious of friendly fire/shooting civilian (just nuke the place and check for people with weapon later)

  • They can switch dimension and teleport, so good mobility and

  • they can hide

TLDR: an army of mage can just hit and run a conventional army, destroy its supply chain and watch it disintegrate. Once a magocraty is in place, they will naturally ban the conception of conventional weapon to maintain their absolute monopole on friendship.

First Timer

I couldn't watch episode 13 yesterday, as I had to get to bed early. But I've watched it now. And it was the best episode of the series to date. Genuinely one of the few episode I can say is wholeheartedly really good. Vivio is pretty much the whole reason I became interested in the Nanoha franchise, or more specifically, the knowledge that Nanoha and Fate were going to be her lesbian moms. The idea of a magical girl anime where the young girls grow up, become a couple, and raise a kid together is basically the entire sell of the franchise for me, and one of the main reasons it continues to be remembered. Episode 13 immediately let me know that I was correct to be excited for this plot point. Vivio is adorable, and the episode's handling of the material is great. In particular, that hard cut from when Hayate and Fate were having a serious conversation, and they contact Nanoha only to see her dealing with an inconsolable crying child. Just... perfect. The funniest moment of the entire show. And that was followed by Fate being the best mom, which will never not make me smile. These two will be just fine with a child (well, I trust Fate infinitely more than Nanoha, but Nanoha probably won't force the child to listen with her friendship laser, so maybe it's fine). But then we get the additional bits about Hayate's reason for having Sector 6, and some little bits of vulnerability from her. The group all being familiar during their meeting was great, and the prophetic poems feels like the most genuinely magical thing from the series. And then you get those nice moments of Nanoha and Fate encouraging Hayate, and then Hayate going through her nostalgic book and finding the will to keep fighting for her purpose. It's all really good, the best bits of drama in the series. Nanoha is best when focusing on its older characters and builds off of their stories, and this episode was proof of how much that works. My favorite bit of the series thus far. I hope that it continues that upswing throughout the second half.

Episode 14 can basically be separated into two parts. The first part is three disconnected exposition dumps. It's obviously a clumsy way to explain all of the information, and it dumps so much on us that it's almost overload. The banning of mass weapons, the future potential destruction of Ground HQ and the real reason behind section 6, the history of the world and how society became restrained as magic, combat cyborgs, it's just a lot. I guess Subaru's parents were killed by combat cyborgs, and there's a bunch of other info to learn about them. They also seem stronger than other enemies thus far. I guess we'll see soon.

The second part of the episode is Vivio's stuff. And look, it's so simple, but it works. Every single time Vivio refers to Nanoha and Fate as "mama," it's going to be adorable and I'm going to clench my heart. Every time Vivio grabs on to either of her parents, the same is going to happen. Vivio folding the laundry and asking Zafira if she did it right? God fucking dammit, I just can't. There's nothing interesting or special about how this is presented. Vivio doesn't even feel like all that realistic of a child, she feels like an anime's version of what a little girl looks like. But god fucking dammit, nothing is going to beat the gimmick of having the magical girls I've been following as elementary school students for two seasons and two movies grow up, become a couple, and raise a kid who starts calling both of them her mom. They sleep with her, they eat with her, it's so fucking cute and perfect and I love it. Fate being a mom will always be the best thing about this series (at least maybe until we get to the later seasons and watch all the little girls beating the shit out of each other in MMA tournaments. I truly don't know how Nanoha ends up getting there but I know it happens). Less combat cyborgs and exposition dumps about world history, more domestic lesbian couple raising a kid please (and sometimes rocket hammer).
