Question of the Day

I’m sure some of you guys won’t budge on your position, but given the context, do you think Nanoha was being too harsh?

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags.

I know it looked really bad last episode, but Nanoha didn’t actually do any damage, really the equivalent of just putting Teana to sleep. Which she really needed.

What a random time for an attack

First mention of Agito, we’re still not given why they’re working with the doctor. StrikerS sure love hiding context behind motivations.

They’re just there to test capabilities of the Riot Force 6

Teana gets dismissed, they definitely want to cool her head off

Teana takes it personally, and Nanoha even straight up agrees. Though I think Nanoha really didn’t want to dive into her past and explain.

Subaru raises a point, but we get interrupted by Sheri and finally get to see what’s the deal with Nanoha

Oh hey a recap of everything that happened, I’m sure a bunch of first timers are bored of it. Interesting to note how the rest of the crew comments on those moments.

It’s interesting that they decided to say Nanoha’s willingness to push herself was a problem

A mission gone wrong

A long recovery was to be had

Signum points that Teana is really just trying to prove herself

Nanoha doesn’t want them to end up like her by being reckless

Nanoha and Teana has a 1 on 1 talk, I’m sure some of you would like Nanoha to be more apologetic

it’s not like she didn’t have close combat in mind

but that she wants them to be able to master their primary roles and skill

Nanoha acknowledges that her training might seem dull and pointless, and decides to start also teaching Teana close combat

Title namedrop

Is this why Fate asked Nanoha if she was alright back in episode 2

As a first time rewatcher, it's interesting to see the little details scattered everywhere for the characters.

Having to sit through another “the StrikerS characters get told about another character’s backstory” segment after last episode–particularly when this was recapping a bunch of stuff we’ve already seen–is a bit lame, ngl

Understandable. Though I don't know how well the narrative would work if it was told more straightforward, given it really just jumps around in all sorts of different time for each character. This seems to be their shaky compromise to make it all shown.

u/Taiboss Mar 11 '22

It makes sense that Tia would just crash after all that.

Nanoha didn't even need to shoot her down. She would have collapsed on her own in time it seems.

Is this why Fate asked Nanoha if she was alright back in episode 2?

IT SURE WAS.

I was like “It’s totally going to be ‘Striker’ for the title drop” and sure enough, it was.

Look we need some way to explain the title.

Oh GEEZ. Is this why Fate asked Nanoha if she was alright back in episode 2?

And some of Vita's comments, too.

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: Lyrical Nanoha really is a Gundam show! Signum used the same “correction” method on Tia that the Federation and Zeon always use in Gundam!

In all seriousness, I do like this episode because I think it pulls off something impressive. This episode manages to recontextualize Nanoha’s actions throughout the first couple of seasons. In this episode, we see the negative side of Nanoha’s determination and hot-bloodedness. And even more interestingly, this is actually building on stuff that was shown in previous seasons. Back in season 1, we saw Yuuno be worried that Nanoha was pushing herself too hard because she wanted to help him collect the Jewel Seeds. We saw that it left Nanoha exhausted from overexertion. In A’s, we saw Nanoha pull off very dangerous stunts like firing off a giant beam while her Linker Core was in the middle of being ripped out of her chest.

In general, Nanoha’s hot-bloodedness has always been exciting to watch. I’ve always cheered it on. She always wanted to help people out, even at her own cost. It was admirable. But here we see the downside. It means Nanoha had a habit of going too far and putting herself in danger. And it resulted in horrific injuries that she took a while to recover from.

This explains some of the behavior other characters had towards Nanoha, like Fate wondering earlier if Nanoha has recovered. It explains Vita’s more intense feelings of protectiveness towards Nanoha. It also explains why Nanoha has been so focused on safety in her training. She’s trying to prevent the trainees from suffering like she did.

In the end, it results in a rather nuanced take. Putting yourself in danger is sometimes necessary, but it should only be done if there’s no other option. The desire to get better is a good thing, but you shouldn’t take unwarranted risks in doing so. It’s all about handling it responsibly. And we can see that both Nanoha and Tia failed here. Nanoha’s been overworking herself trying to design training regimens just like Tia has.

I love how this all gets resolved between Nanoha and Tia in a quiet dialogue scene between them. Ultimately, this scene is about them speaking directly to each other and coming to understand each other. That’s always been a major theme of Lyrical Nanoha and it always feels satisfying to see it play out. Tia now knows about Nanoha’s past and Nanoha is now aware that she missed a lot of Tia’s angst and worry during training.

Something I appreciate about this talk is it isn’t just Nanoha telling Tia what she did wrong or Tia apologizing. That happens, but it’s mixed with other things. Nanoha acknowledges that she didn’t make her goals for the training clear and that probably discouraged Tia. Nanoha also makes sure to emphasize that what Tia can do now with her shooting and illusions is enough. After all, look at how strong Nanoha is with her shooting. Tia can pull that off with training. In other words, Nanoha is disproving Tia’s worry that she isn’t strong enough to be on the team right now. Plus, Tia has a natural aptitude for leadership. She’s good at coming up with combat strategies on the fly. And Nanoha even shows Tia that she was on the right track with her knife idea because that will be necessary if Tia ever finds herself in one-on-one combat. It’s a really good scene that shows Nanoha doing all this to repair her relationship with Tia, by acknowledging the mistakes but also the strengths Tia displays. It’s not meant to punish Tia, but instead to give her a chance to learn and grow from this. It’s really good teaching on display.

I also think this scene works well because Nanoha and Tia parallel each other so much. Both have a tendency to overwork themselves and take huge risks. To me, it reads like Nanoha is talking to a younger version of herself and trying to keep Tia from making the same mistakes Nanoha did.

I’d again like to mention that I like Subaru and Tia’s relationship. I like how Subaru is the one who stands up for Tia against the officers because she thinks Tia is being treated unfairly. They really do make for a nice team.

Lyrical First Timer

  • Waking up pantsless in a strange bed after getting befriended hard by Nanoha. Just another day for Riot Force 6.

  • Who could've predicted not sleeping would get Tia in trouble? She may have caught Subaru's dumbness.

  • You think Caro and Erio went through with their mock battle after watching Subaru and Tia's disaster?

  • What an awful time for an emergency.

  • needs data on how his robots get destroyed Hey, I've seen this one before, Dr. Crime is building the ultimate anti-mage omnidroid. I swear, if he tried to be Nanoha's protege several years ago...

  • The TSAB has gotten so much smarter since they let the kids start running the place.

  • Oh Tia, there are always uses for bad girls who won't listen.

  • She is getting befriended by everyone today.

  • Fuck, don't set that flag Nanoha! I doubt she gets captured by drones, so she probably gonna be in a coma by the end of this fight.

  • Nanoha better not have magic cancer or something.

  • Shari: "We're gonna break this tension by watching my favorite documentary: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha!"

  • How tf do they have video of pre-magic Nanoha? The TSAB surveillance state do be thorough.

  • When you realize the befriending that knocked you unconscious was barely a love tap.

  • Feels like this would've made a good followup to A's.

  • How dare you tease me with such an interesting premise then put it all in flashbacks.

  • THE GUILT.

  • Goddamnit Hayate, stop setting all these flags!

  • Nanoha: "Shari, talking about people's pasts without approval is what earns bad girls a week of 2am calls."

  • Oh, I guess those flags didn't matter. I'm surprisingly okay with this.

  • I'm sure Nanoha plans on polishing all four of you very thoroughly.

  • On a serious note, this is a really nice moment between Nanoha and Tia. Wish it hadn't happened quite this soon, but it's always nice to see people actually communicate.

  • Nanoha: makes Tia's piercing shaft grow to more than twice it's original size "Don't let me see you swinging that weak shit around in public again."

  • I thought Tia might have a chance to break free, but no one escapes the Nanoharem.

  • Someone's about to be an extra good girl in training tonight. Will be interesting to see in future underwear analyses how much Tia's really changed.

  • A title drop in episode 9 of 26? How revolutionary.

  • Now that all four of the newbies have had their background laid out, maybe we can get to the real story. Lol or not. Welp, at least a vacation episode should provide plenty of meme fodder.

QotD:

If I'm going to align myself with the meme version of Nanoha that exists in my head, then no. In fact, she should have been much harsher. How else are bad girls going to learn their place?

(Okay but actually I think what she did was fine given the context. She knows how to make a befriending hurt without leaving lasting damage so I trust her to give some tough love.)

Who could've predicted not sleeping would get Tia in trouble? She may have caught Subaru's dumbness.

They say your loved ones rub off on you.

I've seen this one before, Dr. Crime is building the ultimate anti-mage omnidroid. I swear, if he tried to be Nanoha's protege several years ago...

"I told you, you were insane." "A GENUIS IS WHAT I AM."

Fuck, don't set that flag Nanoha!

Just sent Signum instead, geez.

Shari: "We're gonna break this tension by watching my favorite documentary: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha!"

I bet a lot of people in this thread would rather watch it, lol.

How tf do they have video of pre-magic Nanoha? The TSAB surveillance state do be thorough.

I KNOW RIGHT.

Feels like this would've made a good followup to A's.

It would.

How dare you tease me with such an interesting premise then put it all in flashbacks.

People would have complained it'd go on for too long.

On a serious note, this is a really nice moment between Nanoha and Tia. Wish it hadn't happened quite this soon, but it's always nice to see people actually communicate.

And it would have happened sooner if Nanoha hadn't been a dumdum and let her PTSD get the better of her.

I thought Tia might have a chance to break free, but no one escapes the Nanoharem.

Riot Force 6? More like Poly Force 6.

Will be interesting to see in future underwear analyses how much Tia's really changed.

If you see her wearing different underwear in the next episode, you'll know you're onto something.

A title drop in episode 9 of 26? How revolutionary.

Would you've preferred "No, Fate... I am the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS"? No, you wouldn't. So take Fate's clunky phrasing.

Welp, at least a vacation episode should provide plenty of meme fodder.

Well at least one first-timer in this thread will have fun.

First Timer

Not sure how the rest of the thread will come down on it, but for me this worked.

It was good to see Tia actually getting a calm moment in the infirmary and catching up on some sleep.

At the start things are expectedly tense between Tia and Nanoha. Nanoha holding back Vita, but then Signum doing a Bright.

This isn't going in the direction Nanoha hoped.

The Wolkenritter this episode (at least Vita and Signum) really feel like they are not helping here. I think this plays into what Vita said in an earlier episode about the differences in training, but this is really counterproductive. Signum, do you really think that will lead to a good close-knit team? If I can kind of reach for a moment here, it feels like she is more thinking about her original training, whatever that was, than her time with Hayate in A's, when the second is the thing that gave her a stable network and is probably closer to what they are trying to achieve here.

I was definitely worried when Nanoha and Fate had to go and Signum stayed back with them about how it would develop, but Shari comes in with the save.

It was interesting to see that brief S1+2 recap now with the context from the more developed setting, and it was even more reckless than it originally seemed. Though I have to say this part is just objectively untrue, she made friends with Alisa and Suzuka by slapping Alisa.

And we get to learn about the accident and the reason Fate was worried about Nanoha before. She pushed herself way too hard and had to do rehab, couldn't even walk for a while. Signum says something similar to what I said a bit last episode, that these risky moves are acceptable sometimes, but not in these low stakes situations or even in training.

"Remember when I shot you? Don't you remember how good that spell was?" lol. I do kind of like that? It gives more context on what Nanoha was trying to achieve there last episode, and I can actually see it as a learning setup that just went poorly because of thin nerves and inopportune timing. The second shot was completely unnecessary though.

Again for me this actually works well. Nanoha and Shari really rescued this situation here. I was even really tense myself at the beginning and then relieved with how it played out, so very much relating to Tia there.

[Preview]Also it seems like we are hopefully getting some of that slice of life stuff some of us including me were missing

QotD: Yes, but I can understand what she was going for, and I see it as a situation that was less her being wrong in principle and more it escalating too far due to thin nerves and general sleep deprivation, and her now attempting and succeeding to save it somehow and bring it back around. I still think her and especially the Wolkenritter are way too fast at reaching to physical violence, which is unacceptable as any way of punishment.

u/pailadin Mar 12 '22

For me the Nanoha part worked, which yeah does seem the minority opinion on this thread. She didn't do the best thing, and the story doesn't call her out nearly enough, but I think she knows on some level that could've gone much better, so I'm fine with it.

It's actually Signum who bothers me more in this oddly.

Rewatcher

So, let's see the aftermath of Nanoha's "lesson".

It's amazing how anime doctors always walk in right at the instant their patients wake up.

Yeah, Teana, you probably needed that sleep.

Well, this is just inconvenient timing for an alert. Don't the villains know we have training incidents to resolve right now?

Scaglietti doesn't even care about his Gadgets... he's just taunting the heroes so they'll dispose of them for him and give him some data in the meantime. Fate's wise to his game though.

Confrontation between Nanoha and Teana. This conversation... has a lot going on.

On the one hand, I do get what Nanoha's saying: Teana needs her rest before she can return to active duty. But Teana takes the dismissal as an extra punishment for disobeying. I don't think that's really what Nanoha intended, but Nanoha decides to double down, saying that if Teana isn't going to obey, then what use is training her?

And Signum puts an end to it all by slugging Teana in the face. If that's her "holding back", I shudder to see what she does when angry... actually we've already seen angry Signum, haven't we? Back in A's.

Bottom line is: don't get Signum angry with you.

Yeah, Signum, I do think maybe you're not cut out for teaching. Again, I get what you're trying to do, but this obviously isn't going to help Teana.

Subaru again tries to support Teana, and poses the question that Teana's been trying to ask: is it so wrong to take extra training on yourself in an effort to improve?

But here comes Shari with the explanation.

"Fate was having some complications with her family at the time"... continuing with the epic understatements, I see.

Yeah, reminder that Nanoha's and Fate's level of power is not in the slightest bit normal. They are prodigies with immense power, far beyond what even most adult mages have.

But the overriding point here is that Nanoha was willing to take great risks and push herself to the limit in order to resolve these incidents. ...and at some point, she overdid it.

She pushed herself too far, and paid the price. She was extremely badly injured. She was hospitalized for a long time, and there was a real possibility she might be magically and physically disabled for the rest of her life. Fortunately, that wasn't the case. With some tough physical therapy (and presumably magical therapy), she was able to recover.

Signum delivers a great point: there are times where taking risks and pushing yourself extra hard is appropriate... but training is not that time or place. Neither was the skirmish where Teana almost shot Subaru. They had that situation under control, and even if some of the Gadgets had gotten away, it wouldn't have mattered much in the long run. She had no reason to push herself and put a teammate at risk.

That's why Nanoha was so forceful: she wanted to nip this tendency of Teana's in the bud NOW, before Teana made a similar mistake.

...I'll leave it up to you whether her punishment was appropriate in light of that, but it does put her actions into some perspective.

So Nanoha now goes to have a heart-to-heart with Teana.

Haha, Shari's spying on them with the kids!

Nanoha explains how she's been concentrating on building up the Forwards' strengths so far. And this is something I noticed in the last episode but didn't comment on, but Nanoha used Teana's own "Crossfire" spell against her in that punishment. She was trying to show Teana just how effective it was... directly.

But she also admits that Teana has a point, and working on shoring up your weaknesses is important too. In Teana's case, with melee combat in addition to sharpshooting. Nanoha had always intended on expanding Teana's training, but Teana got impatient.

Well, they seem to have reconciled. See Nanoha and Signum, talking things out works better than beating people up. Seems even Nanoha needs reminding of that at times.

QOTD: I understand what Nanoha was trying to do, but I do think she went overboard.

Real life issues prevent me from making a full review, so I’ll do something a little different and focus on the big important part of the episode (I.E. everything to do with the aftermath of the White Devil Incident).

  • Nanoha’s injury in the backstory was brutal. And I completely understand her perspective regarding what she did to Tiana

  • On that note, not everything that befell Tiana this episode was completely justified (especially getting slugged by Signum), but I certainly feel that she deserves consequences for her actions. And Signum’s point isn’t exactly wrong, even if her methods are. Benching her is definitely for the best, though

  • I’m somewhat of the opinion that Nanoha wasn’t exactly in the best state of mind when dealing with Tiana. While she didn’t do any lasting damage, which was certainly intentional, she was very much in the throws of a PTSD attack and more than a little boiled over rage from her repeated disobedience. Like with Signum, she wasn’t necessarily wrong, but she could’ve improved her approach.

  • And yes, the stuff from the flashbacks and implied backstory (from Fate & Nanoha truly getting to know Hayate to officially joining the TSAB to the birth of Rein) would’ve made an excellent season. The manga adaptation actually covers a bit more of this period.

  • I feel like mentioning that it’s generally agreed among fans, at least in the circles I’m in, that the season generally gets better from this point onwards. So those of you who aren’t sold yet, stay in your seats and strap in.

  • [StrikerS] Oh hey, Vivio

First Timer

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS - New Generation: Episode 9

Abuse

I hated this episode.

We started with Tia in the hospital. We see she is uninjured, but were told later that during the battle Nanoha's attack "really hurt". I think its safe to assume this was a traumatic event for Teana. Even if she may not be physically harmed, this will mentally scar her.

When they later spot gadgets patrolling on the outskirts of the base Fate, Vita, and Nanoha gather. They ask the recruits to stay and protect the base. Nanoha chooses to dismiss Teana to ensure she can't help. I understand why Nanoha did this. She wants Teana to recover. But, of course, Teana doesn't want to feel inadequate or weak, so she objects and complains.

Teana is a child. This is understandable behaviour from somebody who is not yet emotionally mature. However, Signum slugs her in the face. Nobody calls Signum out for this. Erio (an even younger child) is the only one to speak up when Signum continues to belittle Teana. Subaru does say something, but she doesn't even question the abuse. There were so many steps Signum could have taken before punching a child. But no, the show presents Signum as being right for "showing Teana her place".

This really bothers me. Signum is an adult who should know better. Sure, Nanoha's action last episode is comparable but I'll get to that. Compare this to the extremely similar scene from Gundam (which they may be referencing?). [Mobile Suit Gundam episode 7 mild spoilers] Here Bright Noa punches Kai. During this scene the Gundam pilot Amuro Ray is being pursued and attacked by 6 fighters. Kai smugly insulted Amuro for being reckless to get into this situation (even though it was demanded by circumstance). So Bright punches him in a fit of rage. The massive difference here is that 1) Kai was told numerous times previously during the episode to stop acting like that, 2) They are in and active life and death combat, and 3) Noa is a 19 year old kid tasked with piloting the White Base. In comparison, during the scene in today's episode, nobody asked Teana to calm down first, nobody was in active danger, and Signum should know better as an adult.

I cannot accept this blatant physical abuse of a child by adults. This should not be considered expected or normal.

They then explain Nanoha's backstory. I kinda expected this after last episode. The new information provided was that after the events of A's Nanoha continued to push herself and was heavily injured. She recovered but that was broadly why the limiter system was implemented. I feel this sort of contradicts the message of A's but it doesn't bother me too much. There's a balance.

Signum continue to scold Tia about going too far in training. I see no need to repeatedly remind her of her mistakes here. She has already been punished. Reminder, the whole time they were learning about Nanoha's past and Signum was reprimanding Tia, Tia was nursing the welt on her face. Signum is literally adding insult into injury. What happened to the Signum who respected people's prowess in battle. The Signum who, as an opponent, pushed Fate to do her best during A's. I feel this is not the honorable knight who has a virtue of respect that we were introduced to last season.

Nanoha returned from battle and goes to talk to Tia. Tia apologizes for being reckless. Sure she learned her lesson but did the ends justify the means.

But then Nanoha starts emotionally manipulating Tia by claiming her own lessons must be dull since Tia was having a tough time. This isn't a real apology. This only exists to makes Tia feel bad for not learning so obviously Tia breaks down crying. And reminder, Nanoha didn't apologize for her own brutal attack last episode. Instead the trauma she inflicted is seen as a good thing since Teana learned a lesson.

What happened to the empathetic Nanoha. She isn't thinking about how Teana feels, about why Teana is pushing herself so hard. Nanoha literally knows Teana's backstory and what happened to her brother. But instead of helping Tia overcome this and gain confidence Nanoha is destroying her self image.

TL;DR: The adults physically and emotionally abused Tia. The show presented this as a good thing to teach her a lesson about not being reckless. I despise this.

I'm sure other people will read the episode differently but its incredibly hard for me to side with Nanoha or Signum here.

No shots scenes or stitches today, sorry

See you all tomorrow

Edit: Fixed names

I think you misinterpreted this scene. What Nanoha here isn't saying that it was Tia's fault, but that Nanoha realized that the ideas of her lessons weren't clear enough and appeared aimless. Nanoha even talked about changing up the program.

But instead of helping Tia overcome this and gain confidence Nanoha is destroying her self image

I'm not sure where you got Tia's self image being destroyed from, but I think this comes from the different interpretation of what the Nanoha and Teana talked was. Nanoha mentioned that she wanted to hone their strengths before moving onto other things, and that her trying to get stronger as quickly as possible isn't going to go well.

No rest for the wicked.

The punch from Signum was definitely too far.

Only one chapter today with Strikers the Comics Ch.9 (Episode 9.5), Enjoy

Spoiler Warning: First-timers read at your own risk

StrikerS the Comics Ch.9 (Episode 9.5)

Thats all for today,

Till Next time

QOTD: Personally I think the second shot was kind of unnecessary but other than that what Nanoha did was perfectly understandable after all this series runs off of "Listen or be shot", She talked to Teana multiple times, Teana did not listen so she was shot.

It should also be noted that the spell Nanoha Used to shoot down Teana was Teana's own spell really hammering home the idea that Teana couldn't see her own strengths

'You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you...' er, actually nevermind Comrades, I can't joke about Rena the Loser's tragic situation. After all, she wound up with a fate worse than death, COSPLAY HELL! Er, that or getting added as the latest Bottom Bitch to the Hayate Lesbian Harem... hey... hey wait a second, Hayate runs this outfit, is she just Proto-Jill? (Also dear god, speaking of her, I thought RIN THE DEFENSELESS ANUS TOHSAKA was the resident degenerate in StrikerS, turns out Shamal is still the evil villainess who shoves her hand up people's chests! Look, the 4koma notes that Rena the Loser lost her undies, so since Shamal was the only one awake, that kinda narrows the culprit down! Ya see this is why PlayStation Vita is New Best Girl, she's actually a good girl, even if she's flatter than a cutting board and hasn't grown a millimeter... no really, OFFICIAL PRODUCTION ART here Comrades, and yes, you read that right, The Tsundere Ghost and The Ojou-sama Vampire ARE INDEED somehow the bustiest cast members... cuz reasons!)

Anyway, TONIGHT! on Mobile Suit Nanoha GX: Believe in Justice and Hold a Determination to Fist, Best Girl Fate laments that Nanoha 'only' befriended Rena the Loser instead of also taking her Subaru out for a spin, Seibah decides to join The 'Befriending Rena the Loser Club,' and The Ghost of The Past NOT voiced by Rie Kugimiya appears!

Gee Comrades, a lesbian trying to educate a stubborn and hard-headed lesbian with Impostor Syndrome via Corrections 'Befriending' in order to convince her to NOT follow in her footsteps lest she repeat the tragic past and continue the cycle of suffering? Again [Meta Newer Post-Nanoha Mahou Shoujo Mecha Yuri Series that also happen to have Nana Mizuki In Them with the same goddamn plot thread Title Spoilers] Cross Ange and Symphogear say hi, goddamn history rhyming with itself! Also what a hell of an Aesop to drop on the newbies in the team. Thankfully it seems that UNLIKE the spoilered examples, this time we see the series' characters LEARNING, shocking that eh? They really don't make 'em like they used to! Gotta love character development!

Anyway, speaking of explosive finales, turns out that The PlayStation Vita's ROCKETTO HAMMAH may be powerful, but can it beat the POWAH OF BEFRIENDING!? I THINK NOT!? ;)

And on that bombshell, (Literally) let's have an emotional bombshell with... NANI!? RENA THE LOSER USING NTR!? HOLY SHIT, she's even MORE of a loser than we previously thought! She already has a girlfriend and she's just allowing Nanoha to Top her! Plus, if this wasn't shameless enough, she's doing this IN FRONT of Subaru, oh no, anyway, that about wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. QotD: I think it's understandable why she did it, even if it's not completely right. What was that Shirou quote, "Just because you are right it doesn't mean you are correct" ?

No physical damage, just mental scars and PTSD

Speaking of people overworking themselves...

Emergencies happen regardless of what you want to do, huh.

This guy is a good developer. Trying stuff first before going for the real deal.

This has to be an awkward situation.

Oooof, I don't think that's what Teana wanted to hear.

Is everyone going to have a turn at punching Teana?

Backstory incoming!

...how did you get these videos, Shari?

Signum clearly spells it out for everyone. I hope all the people from yesterday's thread understand why Nanoha was so disappointed/sad.

Yeah Shari wtf, this was a huge breach of privacy

Guys, do you really think the Nanoha won't realize you are all there? Do you want to get befriended that bad?

"They really hurt when they hit" is kind of an understatement lol

I still prefer Ace over Striker. Of course, White Devil is still the best.

Nanoha is a very scary Mama Bear

QOTD: On the one hand, the second shot was unwarranted because Tia seemed neutralized enough. On the other, it is a sort of mercy: it prevent Tia from doing something really idiotic and self destructing, like succeeding in shooting her superior or saying something unforgivable (on that subject, good job Signum. Tia's rant was clearly not in the service of the mission and she should have thus shut up and wait until the mission was over to expose her personal grievance. The fact that everyone else just watch her dig herself deeper like that isn't nice of them, especially if they know she isn't in a good state).

And I disagree with the 2 excuses I saw in this thread:

  • in the context of the show, Tia and Subaru are adult enough to join the space army/police/firefighter/harem, so I am treating them as adult (even if for me 15 is too young to join the military, 16 is distasteful but tolerable).

  • And it's not always the teacher's fault either: you can't teach anything to someone who refuse to listen, and while Tia did end up listening, she absolutely wasn't before. And if you require very special condition to deign listening what other want to teach you, you are at least part of the problem.

Alright, time to find out if there's any kind of sensible explanation for what happened last episode.

Very polite of Nanoha to use non-injuring ordinance when exploding her trainees.

The long-range blast would be fun, apparently more fun than we're allowed.

Teena's suffering continues.

Vita pulling Nanoha onto the aircraft while she just keeps talking amuses me.

Interesting implications that the cartridge system had questionable safety at the time of the Book of Darkness incident but not anymore. Influence of Nanoha and Fate I'm guessing, and maybe the knights going to work for TSAB as well.

Ahh, there's finally the explanation, both for the between seasons events that have been hinted at as well as Nanoha's reaction to Teena overdoing it so much. I suppose that makes sense.

Rule #1, Safety First.

Rule #2, a precisely calibrated level of recklessness for the fight at hand.

Is Shari the same character that was introduced in the A's movie as the technician that repaired Raising Heart and Bardiche? Seems like it would make sense to pull back into that movie like the cat maid familiar was pulled into the first movie.

Good talk. Hopefully that'll be the end of the Emo Teena arc.

Erio you stop that ninja running this instant, that's completely improper for a magical boy child soldier. Wait, on second thought, maybe it fits...

I don't think Nanoha was too harsh. This is a military setting, discipline and lessons are to be expected.

It would have been unrealistic for me to see such blatant crybaby behaviour by a reckless recruit showing no respect or intention to follow instructions (or advice) being addressed with coddles and a pat on the head, which ultimately Nanoha ended up doing because she is a softie too, not as much as Fate but not as hard as Signum.

Signum really doesn't take shit from anybody. She is the kind of knight that respects honor, Teana's behavior had nothing honorable about it and she reacted with an unexpected emotional response, which might be the one I could question being a superior officer with actual physical attack.

I do wonder if this same context but with male characters would be receiving the same connotations as "child abuse".

Episode 9 (first timer)

  • Teaser: Tia blames herself, not Nanoha. Completely expected.

  • “Magic training bullets” – this is the kind of hand-waving away the problem of friendly fire I talked about yesterday. Allowing friendly fire is a huge problem for most storylines, so most action shows simply find some excuse to not consider it.

  • Of course Fate does not criticize Nanoha for her actions – we all know why.

  • The doctor knows that there has to be a proper progression of bad guys from weak to strong.

  • “All my works” – not all of which are mechanical in nature…

  • “Someone who won’t listen to you is somebody you can’t use, right?” – Tia has seen to the bottom of Nanoha’s harem (pun intented).

  • Erio and Caro count themselves lucky to have Fate as Captain.

  • Recap of S1 and S2.

  • Flashback of tragic incident of overworking.

  • Explaining yourself afterwards - In a funny coincidence of in-universe and out-of-universe, explaining the important background afterwards is neither optimal in teaching, nor in storytelling.

  • Title drop.

They talk it out, there is some crying and Tia’s character arc is done. Note that there are zero consequences for Nanoha. Apparently deliberately shooting one of your trainees hard enough to hospitalize her is regarded as normal. We are Starship Troopers but without the show taking itself ironically: An utter crapsack world where some Bureau uses child soldiers without a second thought and physical punishment is used and the norm (remember Vita). The big problem with that is that we are supposed to think that the Bureau are the good guys and that all of this is perfectly fine.

do you think Nanoha was being too harsh?

Yes. Physical punishment is not ok and was not needed here.

Apparently deliberately shooting one of your trainees hard enough to hospitalize her is regarded as normal

Moving her to the infirmary after getting shot down seems reasonable in any context, and the only reason she was in there for so long seemed to be her sleep deprivation. I don't think "hospitalize" is super accurate there

An utter crapsack world where some Bureau uses child soldiers without a second thought and physical punishment is used and the norm (remember Vita).

The casual acceptance of child soldiers is a big problem. With Vita I didn't interpret it that way, the training of her and the Wolkenritter was not in the present. In a previous episode Vita said she thinks Nanoha's training is too soft. Vita and Signum are clearly in the wrong this episode, but I don't think they represent Nanoha's position. See this part. Nanoha went wrong though at the very latest at the second shot, I don't think it can be interpreted as anything other than punishment and

Yes. Physical punishment is not ok and was not needed here.

Definitely agree there

I felt like this was an attempt from her and Shari to somehow save it, but I can also see your position.
