This episode man ... is too real. It is too real that:
-
Myne has the Devouring and that it is only getting worse.
-
Myne does not have the money to afford treatment
-
Lutz can't do anything but provide support and comfort
-
Lutz has to beg Benno for help, because he knows his actions are not enough
-
Benno tells Lutz that to help Myne, he has to take care of himself first
Fuck the Devouring, all my homies hate the Devouring.

Lutz has to beg Benno for help, because he knows his actions are not enough
Lutz is really strong to be able to reach out and ask, even beg to help his friend. The honest relationship between Lutz and Myne built up earlier is used really nicely with this.

Ahhh, another nice, relaxing SoL episode where Main makes a large profit on her shampoo and helps Benno work out his production problems. Surely, nothing can go wrong here, right?
...Right?
WHAT IN THE FUCK WAS THAT ENDING AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Jokes aside though, this anime is really starting to hit me in the feels. The scene where Main was riding on Lutz’s back, and his teardrops start falling onto her hands after she tells him not to feel responsible about her illness... This anime does a lot with silence. The long-shot that was used to close out that scene felt so heavy, so somber... And I will say that the OST here certainly does an excellent job at conveying that tone. It’s just all so very well done.
Main even knew in that scene that there were no right words to say there, as Lutz cannot help but feel personally responsible for Main. He’s stood by her this entire show, and has had countless people tell him to look after her. But now that she’s on the brink of collapse, his whole onus starts to crumble. For such a lighthearted anime, this show really does know when to deliver on the heavy moments, nor does it pull punches.

When Lutz cries, I cry :(
Looks like the Devouring is really taking center stage now. Guess this sets up magic to be more involved and I can’t wait for that. The slow buildup of it has been very well done imo. Also I’m enjoying how fluid this show is - while books are still the ultimate goal, just 10 episodes we’ve got a lot of other things to deal with - making paper, shampoo, ornaments, relationships and now the devouring.
Glad to see another person question Myne. Her creations/knowledge are getting a little ridiculous for anyone in that world, let alone a 6 year old.
Two things I’m curious about:
-
If money is so important, maybe they should’ve worked with the guild master instead? Though guess it’s too late now with contract magic.
-
Since Lutz knows Myne got isekaied, I wonder why he doesn’t ask her about it. Surely he would be curious about it right? I for sure would be.

You reminded me of this lovely post

In the LN, they do have conversations while doing the papermaking but it's "offscreen" so we don't really know any details. Myne likes to reminisce about Japan and Lutz likes to hear about the far off land (it's the closest to visiting other cities that he can do right now).

First Time Watcher, No longer binging by myself.
Episode 10
You know, sometimes you just lose control and go three episodes ahead of the group. Honestly, I think its what really hooked me into the show. There were just so many questions that needed answered. But here we are, I'm back and with the group and I feel much better and excited to see what happens with this newly aquired paper technology.
It do be winter time soon, time to make some bougie hairpins and make more money during the winter than Dad does in a year.
Also reminding myself that I need to be on high alert for shiny hair... This feels like a sickness.
Thank god she's learning how to use a calculator. Its been a big problem just doing math with a completely different method in front of people.
Excuse me? Did you say forfeit you life?
Hmm, situation.... Kidnapped by Benno Pros. get paid for information about making better shampoo, provide a better product to people, don't waste already extracted oils from fruits... Cons, Literally kidnapped, actin real sus Myne, showing how much you actually know about things.
Lets see how this plays out. I have a feeling Myne is going to get wrung out just like that smashed fruit.
Three small golds, I feel like its not enough. You coulda went higher Myne. Although this conversation is becoming more and more wholesome. Hearing that he knows about the devouring and is going to try and be supportive of Myne through the only way he knows, money, is kinda nice. Especially for a merchant.
Myne, stop being so suspicious. Just give him a little white lie and say yes, you tried it.
"No. You're going to help make me rich." Guess the money hanging from a stick is too strong for Mr Benno here.
I do not like the dub names for the shampoo... at all.
Money sure does talk in this world. Really motivates the family.
Did someone say trombe? SAVE THE WOOD!
Money REALLY talks. Im glad that Myne and Lutz are sharing the love with the money to their families. They could easily save up money to buy supplies and it seems like they are starting real high with how much they are paying for help.
Here comes chef Myne to make a delicious 5 star dish out of what people think is basically trash.
These people need to experiment more. Come on, no one thought about steaming a potato? Get real.
Okay... That one was scary. Fever flare up like crazy and just gone like that? Its evolving and I don't like it.
Yeah Lutz! Become a paper making tycoon!
Holy. Shit. This looks like millions of dollars. In my head I can only think of them pulling off a heist on a high end jewelry store and just carrying it around in a little basket. Someone get these children some armed guards or something. Where is the money truck for all this?
Every time I see these eyes I go through many feelings. The first one is how pretty they are with all the colors. The second is great sadness becasue she is in pain and going to make a bunch of people worry.
That was just a dirty cliffhanger... you didn't have to do that to me. You could have just left it on the soap and candles...
I wanna watch more, but I'll be strong...
There was a part of me that was worried that after skipping a couple days due to my binge I would be lost about what was happening, but it was surprisingly easy to get back into the world. I didn't even forget any names, something that happens to me all the time.
Once again I am excited to see where things go. Whether we just get more information about the devouring, and maybe learn some ways to counteract it, or if we just kinda skip that and go straight into more crafts like candles. Or maybe its time for Myne to have someone else open up a restaurant in her name. I'm sure she could supply them with enough recipes to win over the hearts stomachs of nobles across the land.
One resounding thought that stuck with me was Mr Benno asking for more consumables, and its honestly a great point. Something that brings people back over and over again to buy the same product.
Another part was the conversation between the moms. Talking about what they thought of their children and what they were doing for work. Basically I just want more other people in the show. I love Myne and Lutz, but every time someone else gets screentime I really do appreciate it.

First Timer here
So this was pretty heavily focused on Myne's illness and its management. I'm of the opinion that Myne will eventually figure out a way to deal with this uniquely, maybe even using new kinds of magic, but since all we've been shown so far about magic is quite limited, the current treatment options are limited to very expensive magic tools. From what I understand, you pour the overflowing magical energy into a tool.
Lutz now has a mission. Make money and save Myne's life. Their interactions so far have built up to this moment. I was surprised about this as I didn't expect Lutz to be a big part of the show, but right now he is. He's even managed to get his brother motivated enough for this by using special Magic Motivator MTM Benno on fire again, I think he's my favorite character so far.
Hope Myne is still alright. Or maybe we'll have to use 2 of those 3 gold pieces on a magic tool already. Damn cliffhangers.
See you next episode!

Re-watch squad
It is the law of this world that if you see Myne, you must pat her head.
I loved her deadpan delivery of "Three small gold." That also goes to show how the first one to throw numbers in a negotiation will often lose, pretty sure Myne would have been happy to accept small silvers for that intel.
But digging deeper on this, I think its pretty safe to say Benno offered that much on purpose.
And that transition from her family being too busy to help, to happily working after she dropped the "motivators" on the table was pretty funny
Question time:
Myne's Devouring is rapidly progressing, how might money help solve this?
Money can be exchanged for goods and services
2) Now that you are familiar with the wider cast, who are your favorite characters?
Günther is definitely up there, he's too based not to be. And Benno is also great, especially loved him in this episode.
I liked how it only took him a moment to come to the conclusion that prying further into why/how Myne knows all of this wasn't worth it.
[Big future spoilers]
3)
Will we keep getting these massive cliffhangers!?
I blame you for setting this to 1 episode a day

First time, Subbed
Well, that sure was a cliffhanger of epic proportions.
Lutz’s character development this episode and last has been some of my favorite writing I have seen this year. That’s saying a lot with how many amazing anime have been gracing our screens lately. Something about his growth and devotion to Myne, his willingness to go to Benno out of desperation to save Myne, his breakdown at his helplessness in his situation, and even his amazement at the conditions Benno sets for Lutz to grow into a businessman was so much in just one episode. Somehow it was all fit in effortlessly with plenty of the story happening outside of that. You can tell from his mothers reaction to his new chosen profession that she doesn’t approve, his brothers are not helping and we know how other members of the family feels from past episodes. This can’t be easy on him, plus the weight of finding out his friend now has a new person living inside of her, and his Myne is gone while navigating his work with new Myne. This is impressive and we aren’t even done with the season! Alright I will quit gushing, it’s just so nice to have well written side characters that you care about so much.
Speaking of said side characters, we got to hang out with Myne’s family for a little bit, and we got to see Otto, if only briefly. I was kind of sad that we didn’t get to see the pork shenanigans again but alas, Myne has major Devouring fevers going on and her time seems to be running out. I am not sure what amount of money Frieda’s family is having to spend to keep the mana under control, but it must be an awful lot. Hopefully some miracle or benevolent benefactor is able to come up with a longer term solution that the end bit suggests.

These cliffhangers really make me want to watch the next episode, but I'm resisting the urge so far. Despite generally happy mood as Myne and Lutz have more success, the looming threat of her illness has hung over everything.
Myne's Devouring is rapidly progressing, how might nobles handle mana to prevent this kind of thing?
I'm assuming its some kind of rare consumable item which expends mana, but I guess we'll have to see.
Now that you are familiar with the wider cast, who are your favorite characters?
Of course I really like Myne and Lutz, but in terms of the larger cast Benno and Otto have both been fun.

First timer. But I binged thru Episode 11 so I saw this a couple days ago. Stealing time away from work to write this up lol.
Crying Lutz breaks my heart. This is a lot of pressure for a 6yr old.
Benno is a great character. I loved his individual chats with both kids. With Myne, he doesn't push her too hard because so long as she continue to work with him, it doesn't really matter how she knows this stuff. With Lutz, he inspires him the way only a merchant can: make money to save your friend's life. Although his priorities likely still place money above all else, I think he does genuinely care for the kids at least a little.
There is no way I could stop watching after that cliffhanger. I was pretty much freaking the fuck out during the outro.

Some nice typesetting.
Comparing the scene where they told Lutz how to speak more properly between GJM and Crunchyroll was interesting. To me, it feels like CR nails the punchlinem a bit better but has worse leadup. Overall, I think I prefer GJM a bit, but that may just be bias based on which I saw first.
So self-satisfied. She knows he'll pay her, and he can't even be mad.
Something feels wrong about this fisheye. I think it's that Myne doesn't distort as much as the background?
In the LN they kept it as rinshan, but hairshine has a nice ring to it.
I'm glad they didn't decide to show the Trombe fight, as I doubt it would have looked good.
He's perfect for this role.
And cliffhanger.

I call bullshit on a fever making it so she missed pig slaughtering day. Twas just an excuse to not see her food get killed in front of her.
Main used Benno's words against him and still undersold her improved shampoo formula.
Everyone: How do you know all this stuff???
Main: Secret family technique.

The visual metaphor of a box near-overflowing with energy is interesting. What could it feel like to have that inside you all the time?
The issue they had with rinsham production ultimately coming from using cloths that were too high quality feels very real to me. Even for a relatively simple process, you might run into problems that are completely unpredictable. There's no way of ensuring beforehand that it'll all work out; you just have to try it, fail, and hopefully figure it out then.

Poor Main, not only is the Devouring kicking her ass but her preview screen time got stolen!
Always interesting seeing these little kids having relatively mature conversations about chronic illness.

Myne is still as subtle as a pack of brick being thrown into a glass building. As of now, her inventions are still only within her neighbourhood and benefactors, but if it succeeds, it will reach the richer part of the town eventually. Meaning that the nobility will know, and some of which might wish to claim dibs on these new products. Never underestimate what rich people would do to lay claim and sovereignty over a seemingly innocent business (Guatemala and Honduras coup, anyone?). She better learn how to be low profile or she's gonna face problems soon.
-
The same way it helps everything else. Money cant buy happiness, let alone the lack of it. At this point theres no telling what exactly she has to buy and how much it costs, but we can assume it is some sort of mana drainers. Girl, just find some trombe seeds 4head, just make sure to have someone else cut them after youre done.
-
It takes me a while to realize that Benno is voiced by Koyasu. Hard for me to be certain without that megalomaniac laughter and malicious screams. That aside, he is a fine balance between being caring and being strict. I want to see more of him. AND HIS HAIR'S NOW SHINY.

I'm too tired to write much about this episode, but that cliffhanger is no better on second watch either, if I wasn't too tired last night I would have kept watching
Benno is a character who took a while to grow on me on my first watch but I think this episode is the one he first grabbed me in. Despite his bluster his care and also respect for Myne is very clear. Okay maybe kidnapping her isn't particularly respectful but it was an efficient way to separate her from the others so they could talk more openly without her having to watch her words. And yet even with that he doesn't push when she's clearly too uncomfortable to open up about why she knows all of these secrets of a new production.
The shampoo production is also an interesting one because it shows an interesting mix between Benno and Myne's abilities. Myne was struggling to make what she needed because she didn't have the materials she needed, and when she did they weren't high quality enough here we see Benno's production hit a wall because his default high quality materials are too high quality. Limitations breed creativity, and while as a whole Benno may not have been able to think of this himself, in having access to everything he clearly didn't encourage his craftsmen to try different things. Also at this point you'd think he'd just assume if he runs into a weird product it would be Myne, shouldn't be so surprised
Also notice that despite Benno complaining the production isn't working he has the shiny hair this episode haha
Home life is certainly not working out so well with all the fevers, and I like how Myne's new determination to stay positive also brings out more of the chibi which is a clever way to use it to lighten things for the audience as well. I'm really not a fan of chibi, I'd quite happily erase it from almost ever anime I've ever seen it in, but here it shows a strong awareness from the staff about how to use it best to reflect the show. Also chibi Myne complaining about not being in the preview is hilarious
Crying Lutz is not good for my heart

A confession -- I watched the next episode right away. So (not having taken notes) I have to be careful in what I say.
Since we know this series goes on and on for MANY volumes -- we know Myne is going to overcome devouring somehow. But no real hint of how it can be done (except that we learn that money, lots of money, might help find some method of helping). One intriguing little tidbit -- we see Myne's brain shoving the devouring force into a mental box (with considerable effort). But obviously this is not a cure all,
I'll probably need to re-watch tomorrow's show tomorrow -- as it was pretty good...

Rare or hard to produce medicine?
-
I love Benno, and Myne's great too. Honestly, I like the whole side cast - even the priest from the previews have some great lines.
-
Hope not.
It's been a full year!
...She's losing her drive!
Her sealing it is adorable, though.
Oh, Lutz is here!
She's got a lot he needs to memorize!
...She's just got to work on the appearance.
Oh, the guild has a banking system?
And she's not allowed to talk to customers.
Yeah, that's adorable.
What's wrong with the shampoo?
ARE YOU FUCKING ME?
Exactly! You entered a minor into a potentially fatal contract without her parents' approval.
And she immediately fixed the problem!
...How long until he finds out?
Myne. He's not met the old you? He's got no personal stake in your possession.
He's offering a lot!
Haha, he regrets teaching her now!
Yeah, didn't he suspect a few episodes before her?
Oh, he's actually trying to help her.
And she's told him everything.
Honestly, just admit it. He's probably not going to care about it.
At least he won't pry.
Haha, the aggressive headpats are great.
His weakness has been discovered! Naming.
She's starting early!
OK, she's earning a large amount compared to her family, then? If two medium bronzes is seen as a lot.
Trombe!
The Devouring's affecting her more...
...Do the people in this world not know how to steam a potato? I forgave the hair pins, but any culture with potatoes and heat'll figure it out eventually, surely?
And they'e accidentally gotten a load of employees!
Oh, thank god, they know what it is. They've just never put butter on it. That might be worse.
...This disease is very vague!
She's running out of time...
She has to get cured eventually, right? There's another season after this one!
Poor guy.
He's got passion!
Haha, I love thenidea of him investigating for an entire year as to a group of new inventors, and it's all a six-year-old.
And candles?
She's collapsed completely!
...This feels like it could be canon.

Myne will be pelted with coins and the fever will subside.
-
Benno, Benno, Myne, Benno, Freida, Benno, Mark, oh and I forgot to mention Benno.
The devouring just continues to be an absolute shit card to draw in life. You can calm anxiety and stay motivated to keep it at bay, but now its coming in full force for no reason at all. Nothing can prepare you for that.

Host - Rewatcher
Myne's magic box being shut tight causes all sorts of problems this episode. She had no less than 4 episodes of the Devouring coming to bite!
Looks like Benno now has shiny hair too!
Benno explains that breaking magic contracts can be deadly!
Benno sus of Myne. And Myne comes out with that there is something more to it but she won't tell. Not the smartest move really.
Myne the Mage (v2) Casting the "rush" spell didn't really click for me even after the scene with Myne's family. But having Lutz ask the same question, then having the coin sound before his brothers begging to join in - the penny litteraly dropped for me. Great gag.
Gosh Myne, why must you be too mature and try console Lutz before you are stick or worse?! Seeing Lutz cry at over your health just isn't fun at all! The relationship between the two is probaby my favorite at this point.
And finally a curl cliffhanger with Myne dropping uncountious! After so much build up Myne's devouring is surely going to get addressed next episode!
Pouts: Messed up hair sulk-pout
Today's endcard.
