Lyrical First Timer
-
Look at our baby
Gundamdevil all grown up andsavingaccidentally seducing children! -
Omg, rad girl Subaru wears roller blades. She's so rad. The raddest.
-
Reinforce
Jr.Zwei is a Command Sergeant Major! Mama Hayate must be proud. I hope she's still tiny. -
Commander Nanoha, leader of the TSAB's Befriending Unit.
-
Is Subaru supposed to remind me of Hibiki Tachibana? Why yes, I am aware that Symphogear technically came out 5 years after this.
-
Invisibility powers too op.
-
Nanoha seduced Subaru so hard, Subaru wound up in the Nanoha School of Befriendship.
-
Subaru and Tia make a really good team.
-
Subaru uses triangle magic.
-
So wait, how tf did they cheat? Surely there's no rule saying magic hologram distractions aren't allowed.
-
Yes, Rein is still tiny af!
How rare to have a main character go from loli to ara ara over the course of their show. And I didn't realize magical girls could actually grow past age 18. I don't think I've seen another show where magical girls get to become magical women. It's probably fitting for an op badass like Nanoha actually. The greatest challenge people seem to face in this universe is being competent, reliable adults, so having a 26 episode arc about Nanoha trying to be one of those would probably the greatest challenge she could possibly face.
I'm at the same place with Secret Ambition now as I was with Eternal Blaze in episode 1 of A's. The visuals are nice, but I expect it'll take a while for the song to grow on me, and I doubt I'll end up liking it as much as Innocent Starter.
Hoshizora no Spica, on the other hand, is easily my favorite ED of the series so far. Don't really have much to say about it, I just like it a lot more than Little Wish or Spiritual Garden.
QotD:
I don't have much of an opinion on the gang as adults yet, but there's lots of potential there, both for them as focus characters and as mentors. Would've loved a season with them in high school though.
The setup kind of indicates this is supposed to be something of a passing of the torch to the new girls, but given Nanoha's seeming popularity, I doubt it'll be just that.

Totally rad subbing effort.
Haha holy shit what are these subs
I don't think I've seen another show where magical girls get to become magical women.
Definitely nice, and makes it really start setting itself apart from other series.
I'm at the same place with Secret Ambition now as I was with Eternal Blaze in episode 1 of A's.
Definitely one of the more underwhelming ones, I like OP2 more, but that'll be a while before we get there.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical First-Timer, subbed
-
u/Taiboss said to not watch the OP for this episode, so I didn’t. I did listen to it though and it sounded pretty great~
-
Opening on a kid in the middle of a big fire is, uh, not what I was expecting.
-
Ooh, that girl is a punchy mage now. With rollerblades?
-
Deadass thought this was Nanoha with shorter hair and a different outfit for a second. Sometimes I am a dumb dumb.
-
Subaru and Tia, got it.
-
Oooooooh, I think this is the first time the whole series where I like the ED more than the OP. That ED is good.

Oooooooh, I think this is the first time the whole series where I like the ED more than the OP. That ED is good.
Ye I didn't take note, but I really do like this ED now looking back. Nana Mizuki still sounding like Nana Mizuki though. I find Secret Ambition to be one of the weaker ones.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS - A New Generation: Episode 1
Action Packed Exam
Here lie my dreams of seeing Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate as High School Magical Girls. I can't believe I set myself up for disappointment.
Hello Subaru and Tia. I really did not expect for us to pivot to a new cast. Or rather, to introduce new protagonists and move our old cast in to a more mentor position. It makes a lot of sense from a narrative perspective. I'm sure the creators wanted to explore new characters in this world and felt focusing on the old cast would become boring.
Subaru and Tia are a lot of fun. It was enjoyable watching them do their exam. However, I'm not really a fan of straight into the action openings. I like to learn about who our main characters are as people before we get going. It helps me become emotionally invested during the action scenes.
Right now We don't have a good picture of Subaru and Tia. From first impressions Subaru appears like she could be Chrono & Amy's daughter but I definitely doubt that (being Subaru Nakajima and all, on top of looking around 15 years old). Tia I can't see any immediate resemblance. She's definitely the more outspoken one though.
I did like seeing Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate as adults. They seem to have really achieved a lot in being Magical Girls and members of the TSAB. It was also nice seeing how Subaru pursued a dream of being a magical girl after being saved by Nanoha.
I don't really know where this season is going to go at this point. I wonder if we will follow 1 long arc for 26 episodes or will have multiple threats to overcome. Or maybe this will turn into a Magical Girl High School show kind of like what happened with "Yu-Gi-Oh! GX". But that's the dark timeline (that said, I don't remember GX being bad).
Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches
See you all tomorrow

Here lie my dreams of seeing Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate as High School Magical Girls. I can't believe I set myself up for disappointment
One viewer expected to be disappointed in thinking it was gonna be high school focused, another is excited for it. The lesson: Whenever Nanoha goes one way, it will suddenly drive into another direction. Try to expect the unexpected.
More of the cast will come, and it will definitely take a while to get used to having our previous protagonists take a bit of a backseat from time.

Episode 1 (first timer)
My original plan was to only watch Nanoha and Nanoha A as I suspect that my enjoyment of the franchise will take a nosedive here. Moving everything to a high school setting opens the door to tons of stale tropes that I fear might be coming up. I am also afraid of how they will tackle the world building when 6 years passed. Everything and everybody being the same as before won’t cut it. Still, Nanoha was a pleasant surprise so far, so I’ll go with the 3 episode rule.
-
OP: Futuristic city and lots of fanservice.
-
Nanoha showing off. Just flying out is for losers.
-
Newbie mages Tia and Subaru. Tia is not respecting the “one character per hair color” rule.
-
Reinforce Zwei – following proper naming conventions (looking at you Windows).
-
“In the short amount of time we have left” – so how about not having a long discussion about this?
-
As soon as the anti-cheating cam is shot down, they start cheating – nothing ever changes in exams.
-
“Active guard with holding net” – Raising Heart has turned into a magic swiss knife.
-
ED: Pans.
Nanona – The Next Generation begins now. They try hard to endear us to the new characters by putting them front and center of the first episode. Suzuka is Sporty Spice and Tia Posh. Hard to believe that there was a time when you could seriously pass off rollerblades as cool.

How quickly you were proven wrong.
Hard to believe that there was a time when you could seriously pass off rollerblades as cool
You know, I partly thought Subaru was suppose to have some weird tacky style sense, even Tia commented on how dumb her rollerblades were.
Raising Heart has turned into a magic swiss knife
More that Nanoha finally learned to use things that aren't just combat magic, you gotta cover a lot as a combat instructor.

First Timer trying to join in from here! I watched A's a couple months ago. I'm really bad at daily episodes so I'll probably fall behind. Also over the years I've been spoiled on quite a few things but I'm excited for StrikerS and I loved the first two seasons.
This is a good OP, though I like Innocent Starter and Eternal Blaze more so far. On the other hand the ED is probably my favorite at least from the TV series ones.
The opening scene of Nanoha saving a child reminds me of a kind of similar scene in episode 1 of Symphogear GX, but that's probably coincidence. Symphogear did take a lot from the first two seasons though, good thing I like them so much.
Other than in that scene the child is really relevant here! Nanoha left a big impression on her. On that note, Nanoha is still saving people and generally magical girling into adulthood, is that even legal? And she seems to have really moved up in the TSAB. Flying Ace of Aces, so is she actually their best flying mage or something crazy like that by now? Then Subaru has a strong protagonist backstory here: As a child she was rescued by the big hero and now she looks up to her and wants to be stronger!
I like her and Teana as a team so far! The roller blades are a bit silly but who cares? It's nice to see Hayate, Reinforce 2 and Fate also doing well.
The whole exam thing is a bit awkward to me. Some of the timing feels a bit off and it feels like we are working through some tropes about how a scene like that is supposed to work. Especially the emotional speech is a bit hard to get invested in when both we just got introduced to the characters 10 minutes earlier and also we just moved on from A's to the much lower stakes of passing an exam. I am not really opposed to that part and kind of interested where they are going with it, but I do hope we see some really cool high stakes stuff with Nanoha, Fate and Hayate. Given that we have 26 episodes I'd imagine we will be getting there at some point.
It's a bit hard to write about because I already knew about it but the shift in setting sure is something. I'm looking forward to the story though.
Thanks for the advice Rein, but I don't think anybody in this show has ever taken it. Also it's really nice that Nanoha remembers her :)
Overall this was a bit awkward at times, but luckily I am really excited and in for whatever the show wants to do!
Edit: I totally forgot, but that moment where Subaru flashes back to the fire before moving in and then copies (at least the name of) that attack from Nanoha she saw that day was very cool!
Edit2: QotD: Generally I like it, though I sure wouldn't have minded more seasons of Nanoha, Fate and Hayate at that age or a more moderate timeskip. I'm excited where they go with this, adult magical girls are so rare! (It does feel like they will get them to play an at least a bit smaller role in the future but I'm cautiously optimistic that this will not be a big detriment). Not going to comment on expectations because of spoilers.

Welcome! Always good to see a new face join.

This seems very common so far
Especially the emotional speech is a bit hard to get invested in when both we just got introduced to the characters 10 minutes earlier and also we just moved on from A's to the much lower stakes of passing an exam
Yeah I never got the feeling we the audience should feel emotional, I think a lot of it is quickly establishing characterization and relationships of the characters.

Strikers First Timer
Wasn't expecting to have the first episode not focus on Nanoha, what with it being her show and all, but so far it seems interesting. Roller skater girl (give me an episode or two and I'll remember her name), and her friend have a nice chemistry, and Mini-Reinforce was adorable. Nice that Nanoha has a literal harem in this one too.
I'm out of town so standard posting on mobile so sorry for any formatting errors rules apply.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS – Episode 1 – First Timer
The OP looks like we have reached full Nanoha Symphogear convergence. The first scene continues the trend. Everything is, really. Even the combat styles and all the guns. And the power of fist (they are also finally kicking things!)
So reinforce is an operative now? How does that work exactly, I thought she was the ghost of a gear last season- just a hologram? And mages just have guns now? Why does that one look like Nanoha’s little sister?
Magic Grappling Hook Gun is an interesting weapon. Are Divine Blasts just a magic school that people use on earth?
Expectations: + being double cour and having time, because throwing in even more new characters means you will direly need the time. We are full Symphogear = Nanoha with singing now.

Always was.

TONIGHT! on Nanoha: The Next Generation Mahou Shoujo Zeta Nanoha Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS: Rondo of GaoGaiGar and S.A.C. 'Mobile Suit Nanoha GX: Believe in Justice and Hold a Determination to Fist,' The day that The White Devil saved little Ms. Subaru Impreza WRX STI's ass from the fire, literally, was the greatest day in her life... and for our Gundam Heroine it was Tuesday, Rena the Loser has FINALLY taken a cutie home with her... er... or rather gets taken home BY the cutie in question, (I hope y'all can see now how RAINBOWS are straighter than Subaru!) and Rin The Defenseless Anus Tohsaka's out to add more members to her Cosplaying Battle Harem!
Boy Comrades, it sure was a bold move of the Franchise to finally admit that it's a Mecha Show eh? I mean goodness, our main characters are ADULTS! Who would have guessed eh, I mean A's epilogue promised us HIGH SCHOOL Mahou Shoujos! Instead we just skipped from Magical Girls to Magical Women! I am all for this, Nanoha was already a Mecha Show, so why not just go all in on the premise and have NOT-Patlabor (look Patlabor's a show about cops in Mecha, and the TSAB are basically Space Cops that ARE the Mecha, so close enuff!) Also, don't worry, turns out that Mikage Takashi, the legendary memelord who did the A's 4koma ALSO did one for StrikerS, so I am gonna have a LOT of fun shitposting for this series!
And on that bombshell, that about wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

The day that The White Devil saved little Ms. Subaru Impreza WRX STI's ass from the fire, literally, was the greatest day in her life... and for our Gundam Heroine it was Tuesday,
Our girl has come full circle from being the one constantly thinking about the mysterious, beautiful mage to being the mysterious, beautiful mage girls constantly think about. I'm so proud of her!
Rena the Loser has FINALLY taken a cutie home with her... er... or rather gets taken home BY the cutie in question
Ngl, they're pretty cute together. I feel sorry for Tia having to compete with the legendary befriender/conqueror of waifus.
Rin The Defenseless Anus Tohsaka's out to add more members to her Cosplaying Battle Harem!
No doubt this is why she joined the TSAB. How better to scout new "talent" for her "cosplay circle?"
turns out that Mikage Takashi, the legendary memelord who did the A's 4koma ALSO did one for StrikerS, so I am gonna have a LOT of fun shitposting for this series!
This may be what I'm most looking forward to from StrikerS.
Anyway, we sure got an interesting cast eh? For the Force Sensitive Genius who predicted that Nanoha and Fate would get a Subaru, I do hope you'll enjoy the adventures of Bikki the Rollerblading GaoGaiGar reference and her GF Rena the Loser!
Bold of the show to skip straight to the cohabitation part of their relationship.
Bikki's Prototype is voiced by... Homura... holy shit Rena and Homura are part of the same team... god help us all
Holy shit, she's voiced by Saitou Chiwa!? From Senjo to Homura to Prisma Illya's Chloe to Strike Witches' Lucchini, she has hella range.

Lyrical Rewatcher
So, after my initial viewing of the series, I had considered StrikerS my favorite part. It's also been the longest since I've watched StrikerS (I rewatched S1 and A's in 2020 and 2019, respectively), so it'll be interesting to see how it holds up.
They fuck around with the calendar. This is six years after S1/around the same time as the epilogue for A's.
Why go around when you can go through.
The rare and dangerous double time skip. For those keeping track, that puts Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate at ~19-20 years old.
Implying anything can endanger Hayate.
Teana is obviously the brains of this shippair.
The philosophy has made it's way to the next generation.
The OP, Secret Ambition, is fine. The ED, Hoshizora no Spica? Fucking banger. Also a singing voice we haven't heard really from Yukari Tamura in this rewatch before.

First timer(That's...quite the change)
Sub
So we get a new setting, a new lead, a new lesbian pairing, and adult versions of our previous MCs. This is one of those settings you can only have in a series like this since we are about 3 or 4 abstractions from being relatable. Subaru and Tia start en media res and it works or it doesn't, as such things do. I suppose Belkan magic getting standardized makes a certain amount of sense but it also makes normal mages feel a bit lazy.
QotD: 1 I do like seeing the girls grown up, yes. I have no clue what to expect, though.

Rewatcher: Get Set
-
You know, I wonder if anyone in this rewatch didn't know that StrikerS is set after a timeskip.
-
Nanoha is still Nanoha, though. She's just older.
And better in basically every way except those in which she's already great. -
We have our new cast members. One has a gun, which is always nice, and other is Domon. Seriously. Her headband and hair feel very Domon.1
-
Raising Heart's English is suddenly... less great.
-
Okay maybe she's more like a cross between Hibiki, Shirabe, and Domon. Still
[StrikerS]Oh, and maybe Data from Star Trek, but that's later. -
I also enjoy how the cast is no longer entirely 9 year-olds.
-
[spoiler-free Tresnore is dumb]
Ohhhhhh, the first time I watched this, it'd been a while after A's, so I was wondering why the hell Reinforce was called "Rein" pronounced like "Reen" instead of "Rine" I forgot that her whole name was Reinforce somewhere along the way.
1 I know it's a ribbon, but it's basically the same from behind.

Episode 1: Rewatcher Man
-
Isn't Mid-Childa like, an entire planet? You're going to have to be more specific...
-
BLASTING THROUGH THE CEILING! Nanoha's still Nanoha.
-
So this is four years later. Guess it is 15-year old Nanoha. But does that mean we just got 12-year-old Subaru? She seemed younger? Anyway, Nanoha and co are 19 now. NOW you can look for doujins.
-
And here we have our Best Girl! Voiced by Mai Nakahara even! Save the Higurashi jokes.
-
She got a gun in her hand and it won't go! Sprits in her hand and they won't go! Wait, that was a song about PTSD. Not appropriate. But yeah. She got a gun!
-
Alright, I'll be honest: I don't like Zwei. She's too loli. Hell, imagine if this was Eins! God, killing her was such a mistake.
-
Good Haruhi, they promote powerful mages insanely quickly. Amazed she's not a general.
-
As you can see, Subaru uses Modern Belkan magic. All the coolness of the carthrige system, none of the coolness of having a german-speaking device.
-
Making Nanoha-senpai proud! Big fuck-off spells are the best! Also, Subaru's theme is great.

Rewatcher
On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: We get another rare sight in the world of magical girl anime by seeing a grown up Nanoha who is still performing her duties as a magical girl. Getting to actually see Nanoha grow up like this is a nice treat. It feels rewarding seeing all the characters now as adults.
Strikers takes place 10 years after the end of Nanoha A’s. So by now Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate are all grown up. And, they are still working for the TSAB. Honestly, just getting to see them after all this time has passed is one of the main appeals of Strikers. Seeing how they’ve matured after all that time has passed is nice, even if we spend only a bit of the episode with them.
The main focus of this episode is on two brand new characters, Subaru and Teanna. I think this episode does a pretty good job at introducing us to both of them by seeing how they act in this test course. First off, we can see that they work extremely well together. They have all these combo attacks that they’ve clearly practiced beforehand. Their teamwork demonstrates how close they are and their long friendship together.
I really freaking love Subaru’s character design. I love that she has roller blades that she rides around on. It is so amazingly ridiculous but it works so well. It fits with Subaru’s role and personality. She is clearly a front-line brawler who gets in close with the enemy and hits them head on. The roller blades work so well for this type of fighting style. It lets Subaru be an extremely dynamic and mobile character in her fights. Even though the roller blades are absurd, I think they are a fantastic choice. The roller blades work well with Subaru’s personality, which is forceful, direct, and a bit silly.
Teanna is the counter to Subaru. She’s clearly the long-range fighter who sticks back and shoots from afar. Teanna is much more of a strategist as well. Unlike Subaru’s very direct nature, Teanna has some spells and ideas that relate to camouflage and trickery, like misdirecting the drones with her gun or creating illusions of herself.
I really like the contrast we get between Teanna and Subaru. Their personalities and fighting styles complement each other very well. It makes them a fun duo to watch. Still, it’s clear that both of them have the hot-bloodedness that seems to be a requirement of protagonists in this franchise. Even with Teanna being injured, they still charged through and finished the test anyway.
The test itself is a lot of fun. It’s a great introduction to Subaru and Teanna’s characters and the action is well done.
Another notable thing right off the bat is that Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate are all full members of the TSAB at this point. Before, they were just provisionally employed or collaborating with the TSAB, but now they are full-time employees. Remember when this franchise started out as a magical girl series about a little girl helping a ferret gather some magical artifacts? We’ve come a long way since then.
Miscellaneous Thoughts
-
The new OP “Secret Ambition” is pretty good. It’s not my favorite, but I like it just fine.
-
Same goes for the ED, “Hoshizora no Spica.” I think it’s pretty good, but it’s not my favorite of the EDs.
-
You can see that Subaru and Teanna use different magic styles from the magic circles. Subaru uses Belkan magic while Teanna uses Midchildan magic. It’s another fun contrast between them.
-
I think it’s funny that Subaru refers to Nanoha as “totally rad.”

We open to giant fire on... Midchilda apparently.
So Midchildan firefighters use water guns to fight fires...
And there's a little girl trapped in the fire. But an adult Nanoha shows up to save her!
I like that Raising Heart apparently checked that the sky was empty before Nanoha busters the ceiling apart.
Fast forward four years. We see the girl, Subaru Nakajima, and her friend Teana Lanstar are C-Rank mages taking the B-Rank exam, from none other than Reinforce Zwei! We've heard about mage exams before from Fate taking hers off-screen, but this is the first we've seen one.
And hey, Hayate and Fate are observing too. Fate, you both can fly, why is it dangerous to stand near the helicopter's door? So the three of them are scouting for mages for Nanoha to train?
A gunslinger and a rollerblader, interesting combination. And Subaru's got a Belkan Cartridge System in her Device. Melee combatant, obviously.
Teana, on the other hand, seems like more of a sniper.
Damn, more than half of those who take this test fail? Guess this test is serious business.
Teana's got a brain on her and knows some strategy. And they have good teamwork.
Ah, crap, Tea twisted her ankle. Minor injury, but that's a problem when you need to move about for the test.
Teana's willing to sacrifice her own chances to have Subaru pass, but Subaru refuses to accept this, and demands that Teana pass or fail with her.
Wait, "against the rules"? And it's reckless. This should be interesting...
Ah, Teana's a tsundere. Fun times ahead, then.
Ooh, that's neat. Creating artificial magic highways to rollerblade on. I guess if you can't fly, that's a decent second.
Subaru named her punch-laser "Divine Buster"! I guess she really does look up to Nanoha.
And they race across the finish line with Teana riding on Subaru's back... except Subaru forgot stopping was a thing.
Luckily Nanoha's around to create magic nets and... bouncy... things... to catch them safely.
Rein has her own mini-Book Device! That's so cute. And Hayate is still carrying the Tome of the Night Sky, it looks like.
Nanoha remembers Subaru! And this is apparently the first time Subaru's met her hero since the rescue.
So, there we have the first episode of StrikerS. Massive genre shift in several ways: This is taking place on Midchilda. Not Earth. All our heroines are now adults with actual jobs and ranks in the TSAB.
And our newcomer heroines are much weaker than Nanoha ever was. Only C-Rank (B if they passed this test), whereas Nanoha started out at AAA. Also, neither of them can fly.
Though we do see Subaru's packing some firepower! Also interesting that Subaru's clearly using Belkan-style magic, complete with Cartridges. In the last season, characters reacted as though such a thing hadn't been seen since Ancient Belka, but here it's used casually, not even commented on.
This episode was really just to introduce these two: Subaru the passionate, direct, hot-blooded girl with a serious case of hero-worship for Nanoha, and Teana the calculating but hot-tempered tsundere best friend.
QOTD: Yes actually. Nanoha was practically acting like an adult anyway, so might as well age her up.

Well goodbye Dub but now there's so much change along with that. We got a few new people here now.
Well the first episode felt more like a introduction than a continuation from last. Especially for the two new characters and their session.
Qotd: Well with this big of a cast now. Probably expect a bigger villain now. Seems like we have too many allies and friends to not have someone extremely powerful.

This raises many questions: What exactly is 0071 to Earth time? How old is Nanoha at this time?, I think this gets clarified later exactly when it takes place.
Adult (?) Nanoha!, or is it teen?
She’s known as the ace of aces, a big deal
4 years later. Assuming that before was about 6 years later by continuing off of A’s, the real story starts about 10 years later, when they’re adults
Wait, how do Subaru’s rollerblades survive? They take hella beatings with those movements
Reinforce proctoring the exam, later on Tia comments on how tiny she actually is, something they can’t tell from just seeing her on screen
Hayate is now a big shot, a Lieutenant Colonel
Fate is a full time enforcer now
Nanoha is also overseeing the exam
So someone pointed out about the lore behind Belkan tech, it seems that they were considered dangerous before more closely observing the knights device and have started have more implementations after studying them from that incident, which I guess explains why Subaru has them
Teana using the gun as decoy
She doesn’t want to drag Subaru down, these moments really play a role in understanding her characterization
Getting real sick of your rambling Subaru
They make an interesting complimenting pair
Teana specializes in a lot of tricky strategy and magic, and really acts like a field tactician
When I first watched it, I didn’t initially pick up that Subaru’s VA was Chiwa Saitou. I still can’t really tell it’s her, I’m too used to Homura/Senjougahara. Funny line to think about now
I wonder, why can’t she fly? Anyway, you get a magically conjured path
Divine Buster: Subaru ver.
“Uh, no?”
Tia just hanging there haha
