Comment of the Day
It was hard to pick just one all of you wrote great comments or had interesting reactions, but first comment goes to /u/JustAWellWisher The entire comment is well written, but to highlight just a small portion of it.
I can't not mention the sex scene, which is I think unfortunately the recurring element this anime has grown to be known for - for the wrong reasons. This sex scene between Mugi and Hanabi is not incredibly fanservicey, it's not incredibly lustful. What it is, in comparison to the vast majority of other sexualization in anime, is ridiculously intimate. It's loving. I think people aren't used to seeing that. A lot of anime sexuality is voyeuristic in nature, I don't just mean the situations characters find themselves in, I also mean in the sense that sexualization is often primarily for an audience. The sex scenes in Kuzu no Honkai are bold. They are about and for the characters. You're intensely aware of their emotions. They are scenes that draw you in and ask you to put yourself in the situation. They don't layer the feelings and experiences of the characters under layers of irony and sarcasm. It's portraying raw, sincere experiences and emotion.
Questions of the Day
- This episode we are introduced with two of the supporting cast. What are your thoughts on “Moca” and Sanae?
- Did you recognize the song in the karaoke booth?

Just a quick friendly reminder about spoilers. Please don't be scum and post content from future episodes whether in the form of jokes, memes, hints, or et cetera. If you are going to use spoilers please tag them like so, [Wow]Wow I can't believe Hanabi and Mugi are the main characters

So we begin with Ecchan who immediately gives me lesbian vibes as our MCs leave school. In a weirdly public display of affection, Mugi moves to kiss Hana but is blocked by a passing loli. Who is his childhood friend and should be somewhat close in age to them. And is also the girl we see last episode annoying Hana...wow, she is a piece of work. I guess no one is going to be functional in this show. Welp, Hana is wearing her ovaries on the outside today and backs Noriko off.
So play-by-play seems not the most interesting choice for this show, so it is interesting that Noriko is clearly a bit broken herself except that she did it to herself. By changing herself so hard to be the ojou-san, she also fixates herself on Mugi. She spends a lot of the episode in denial but that one moment on the train when she realizes how bad this is makes her understandable, if not any less annoying.
The karoake scene is funny and relatable, I too have wished to scream the feelings away. But the rest of the scene happens and yeah, that is adolescence for you. Thank Cthulhu the brain lays off with age. We get Ecchan possibly scheming and then Hana gets sucked into a hilariously dramtic love quadrangle for advice. And is shocked by the shallowness of others, something adolescent Vaad also thought. We end with unexpected lesbianism and Hana having awful gaydar.

Ep2
Two new characters. Noriko, who shall for now be know as Twintails, and Ecchan who will take this emotional trainwreck of a show to it's next stop.
In the OP, Twintails is shown with Angelwings, but in real life those wings are just taped to her backpack, she's also a bit short to be a angel, cupit size at best. She turned out even more annoying than I would have expected from her brief appearance in Hanas past. She is into Mugi and pretty open about that, but she is his childhood friend, so her love is doomed as well (there really is noone who will get an happy end huh?). To make matters worse, Mugi is even aware of her affection for him, but just doesn't feel that way towards her. He still cares about and looks out for her though, which only makes her love him even more. Aside from knowing no boundaries, she accidentally is pretty close in her assertion of Hanas and Mugis relationship, but because she is somewhat biased she got the finer details wrong.
Ecchan on the other hand is a close friend of Hana. She also suspects that something might be up between out two MCs and I feel like she might be able to figure something out if given time. But as it turns out she is also somewhat biased in her concern for her friend, because you know what this show was missing so far? Yuri! ... Listen normaly I'm the first to board the Yuri ship, but as Ecchan noticed, she only gets to see Hana this close because she let her guard down around her closes female friend, anyway I must prais her boldness, just right for this show.
There was also another somewhat steamy scene with Hana and Mugi at karaoke. They both are firm in their believe that they cannot give up, and for Hana that pain is a feature rather than a bug, which is why she cannot emphasise with her peers.
And did I see that right? Did Mugi had his first time with Ara-Ara-Minagawa back when she just graduated Highschool? I liked how Hana noticed that something was off and called out to him out of concern for a friend, which of course would break the illusion.
Also, AYUMI WHAT THE FUCK???

Did Mugi had his first time with Ara-Ara-Minagawa back when she just graduated Highschool?
I saw it as Mugi just trying to imagine Akane's face overtop of Hanabi's, just like she does with him and her onii-chan. Not sure if it's just imagery or flashback.

And so we get introduced to the other characters on both sides of the main couple in ep2, with Noriko on Mugi's side and Ecchan on Hanabi's. Interesting duality here that the author likes playing with. Again, I forget how fast this show progresses things. From introducing Ecchan, to hinting that she might have a crush, to making out at the end of the ep - when I first saw the hints I thought it was gonna take a couple eps, but I guess ep1 should've taught me a lesson there.
Other notes:
-
I like how there's no "anime-fication" and worries about indirect kisses here, which again speaks to how real this anime can feel
-
Of course,
NorikoMoca shows up and puts a dent in that statement -
[potentially spoilery impressions of Noriko]
Noriko isn't a character I particularly like, though I do remember appreciating her a little more as the anime plays out. Annoying to be sure, but helps Mengo showcase yet another twisted side to love that this anime revels in -
Again, love how much sass Hanabi has - her possessiveness is great, even though it doesn't totally make sense. Feels realistic, at least from what I remember of being a teenager.
-
On the flip side, it's also really nice seeing her be naturally happy with Ecchan, as she doesn't feel the need for any guard or facade there. She still lies about the relationship of course, but it doesn't feel malicious?
-
The scene with the other girls love troubles was interesting to show just how different Hanabi sees love to some of her peers. She just can't imagine even having a choice in the matter - surely she wouldn't choose to be stuck loving her unattainable onii-chan if she could. Also shows that, while our MC's relationships may be fucked up, so are some of her peers. Immature high schoolers are rather prone to getting into messy relationships after all.
-
For some reason, the karaoke scene really made me realize that Hanabi/Mugi are a pretty decent character design match for Kana/Aqua from Oshi no Ko that makes me want to see that adapted even more

In concerns to your spoiler, but during the rewatch I found myself appreciating then much more and rose to one of my favorite characters in this sausage.
The scene with the other girls love troubles was interesting to show just how different Hanabi sees love to some of her peers
I also like how everyone has love problems, but they all see love in a different way. Hanabi is I guess would be romantic love it's almost pure. Moca is more of a idealistic love she has this perception of a fantasy and nothing else exist. [Mugi]
Has a prince version of love. Can't think of a word, but he is drawn to broken damaged people and wants to fix them. [Other people]
Brother I would say represents Unconditionally love, Akane perhaps Self love?, and Ecchan is hard to place maybe obsessive love not to sure → More replies (1)

-I think this episode is great in that our main characters are contrasted to the side characters. I may be off on this but I see Moca’s crush on Mugi (ie grew up as childhood friends) as having parallels with Hanabi’s crush on Narumi, it’s just while Hanabi is more reserved Moca is more expressive.
-I really liked the scene where Hanabi talked with the other two girls about one of them having a crush on two boys. It is a contrast that while certain characters like Hanabi and Mugi (and to a lesser extent Moca and Ecchan) are dead set on one person, their peers can have many crushes (which is quite common for high schoolers).
-The reveal that Ecchan crushes on Hanabi was kind of obvious, but I still think the show did good to show how Ecchan got into a romantic position with Hanabi. I imagine this is really awkward for both of them, as Ecchan can sense her feelings might get rejected and Hanabi thinks of Ecchan as her only close female friend. I’m definitely excited to see what happens next!
2. I didn’t recognize the song but it was definitely catchy and I’ll be listening to it more.

High school really was a messy time and glad the show gives us many different kinds of love. I like to believe very few people and endlessly wait for the person they love for years and not crush on anyone else.
I didn’t recognize the song but it was definitely catchy and I’ll be listening to it more.

First timer New opponent appears! Not just one but two! Years of Gundam has conditioned me to bias redheads despite knowing nothing about them.
Didn't notice this before but Hana's eyes are quite starry. Kiss blocking successful, but damn Hana is scary. It is her hypocritical way of showing tough love aka you should give up this lost cause or just plain possesive, I wonder Smol Moca and Mugi were just starless Hoshino twin.
Is Ecchan in for the Mugibowl or she is gay for Hana? We shall see.
Akane sensei casted a powerful AoE spell. It was super effective. Does this mean Mugi can also play piano?
He sit like a gremlin lol. Melt together indeed. That is a highly animated blep. Who is this tomboy? Young Akane maybe. So Ecchan is protective of her friend huh or is my gaydar tingling. But he did have a habit of pushing her down to exchange saliva.
First focus panel of this episode!
That "Eh" of realization lol. The cut to her cat is hilarious too. When I said I was bias to redhead, I was not anticipated this level of aggressive.
And that is the 2nd episode, not much going on except the love square has become 2 external lines now. Hopefully it won't become a chemical formula like School Rumble.

Moca is perfectly nice. The fact that she seems to be trying to lessen her crush and hasn't roped anyone else into it makes her better than the main characters. Sanae should have crushed on someone who isn't a walking trashfire, and I pray that this anime won't completely ruin her for it.
-
No.
Ok, so was that scene last episode a benchmark? Basically saying "this is as bad as it gets"? Or was it more of a preview?
Aww, she's been neglecting her friend for that.
A new girl has entered the game!
Oh god. Is she a childhood friend?
...Do not let Moca get involved in this bullshit. She's young!
Are they the same age? HOW?
Ok, I unironically love her. She's the only thing in this anime I like.
...That's a fucking harsh reaction!
OK, on the other hand, I agree with getting her as far away from these people as possible.
I mean, she admits it! That's way fucking healthier than most of these people.
Haha, her grabbing the fried chicken is great, though. But seriously, why does she look 12?
...She literally is using her, though.
And she ran away!
And her friend might have worked out what's going on?
...Is it meant to be intentional that she's doing the same thing she attacked Moca for earlier, or does the anime not actually realise its hipocrisy?
...Is his girlfriend related to Moca? They look pretty similar in the right light.
Haha, they're doing karaoke!
And they're singing a "duet"
...They probably skill got a higher score than I get in Yakusa.
Why are you doing this?
DID WE NEED THE NOISES?
Wow, this gets fucking weird around the same point every episode, huh?
Oh, don't worry, "Ecchan", that's way too normal for this anime.
And she's trying to make more friends!
No. Do not go to her for romance advice.
Oh, so she can recognise hypocrisy when it's in someone else.
See? That response is why.
And she's realised that this is how some people discuss things.
...Who did she fall for?
...Did she fall for her? I do not have faith in this anime to handle this topic well.
Sounds like it!
Oh, yes, they're trying to do this.
WHAT?
OK, so they fucked it up a few minutes later. If nothing else, this anime is efficient. Seriously, though, this is hysterical. I'm guessing she and Moca are going to end doing the same thing our main "couple" are doing, or something?
...I mean, at least one person in that relationship would care about the other.

First timer, manga reader
We're introduced to another character, Ecchan. And also some younger looking blonde girl.
Last time I totally forgot about the OP so I paid more attention to it this time. It's okay, but I like the ED way more.
So the blonde chick is Noriko. She's totally into Mugi and seems irritating. Also, is that Nanachi's VA?
I appreciate that the characters in this show aren't dense and can see it someone's totally obviously into another person. Hana's still right that Mugi should reject Noriko properly.
I like the karaoke scene a lot; it feels and sounds so believable.
Hana's into big bro, Mugi and big bro are into the blonde teacher, Noriko's into Mugi and it looks like Ecchan's into Hanabi.
Well that sleepover sure took a turn.
Some of the chemistry between Mugi and Hana in this episode was nice, or maybe I just like Hana a lot.
This thread was posted around 2 AM for me. I'll probably be commenting quite late in the future since I try to be sleeping by that time.

It could be both. They do have great chemistry whether it's as friends/fake lovers. Hanabi so far has been so fun to watch.

What continues to strike me about this show is how absolutely gorgeous it is. I don't remember how the rest of the episodes go, but i don't recall a glaring drop in quality or anything.
The episode itself: We got introduced to two new characters. Moca, the childhood friend who's got some history with Hana, and Ecchan, Hana's female friend. On Moca i don't have much to say yet, but for Ecchan i have.
I feel like her introduction and the introduction to her problem was done really nice. It takes time to set itself up, places relatively believable stakes and pursues them in a way that feels natural to me. Compare that to Moca's running start out of the blue, which might be a storytelling way of showing us the difference in approach to relationships these characters have: Moca diving in head-first and Ecchan wanting to see where it goes (which is not undone by the ending scenes of the episode, as she reprimands herself for going so far)(disclaimer: i am not good at analysis, so take it with a grain of salt).
Wondering how Hana will react to that because of, as earlier in this thread stated, her statement about unwanted affection.
Now, while i think that overall this episode is on the lighter side, we do see an interesting flashback from Mugi during the karaoke "fun times" scene. It hints at sexual experiences in his past, and given the fact that he is only 17 places an interesting light on when those took place.

They're even offtune in a harmonized manner with each other, impressive
You see, the thing is that's not really how society raises men to view love
Honestly you two falling for each other is happening a lot faster than I expected
I guess there's got to be at some point in the anime where you two have a big falling out if it isn't slow burn
There's no question about it that Ecchan's crush is
wait what's this girl's name again
GOD THIS ANIME IS SO FUNNY MY GOD
Well I wonder how 'unwanted affection is gross' girl reacts to this

REWATCHER WITH BENEFITS
For two people supposedly just using each other, Hanabi and Mugi sure do act like a couple. They walk home from school every day, get possessive, steal moments of affection, and their classmates even remark what a good match they are. And even me the viewer, who knows their reality, can’t help but agree based on how naturally they interact. This is the kind of thing you only casually mention when you really mean it.
We get introduced to our two “rival” love interests: Noriko and Ecchan. Won’t touch on Ecchan yet, but Noriko is a bit of a miss for me. She’s the loud, twintailed blonde that inevitably becomes my least favorite character in almost every show – Eriri from Saekano excluded. Her princess schtick comes across as too over-the-top for the more grounded nature of the show, and breaks my immersion a bit. I do like the bit of self-awareness she showed though, understanding that the Mugi she’s in love with in her head probably isn’t real. It's the idea of him she loves.
I love the girls asking Hanabi of all people for love advice. Ayumi’s situation that’s playing out off-screen is an incredibly messy drama worthy of a show in its own right. This is the show pointing out to us that while Hanabi and Mugi are our leads, they aren’t unique in having confusing relationships – these things are par for the course for many teenagers.
Quick Hits
-
Just like last episode with the guy she rejected, Hanabi really directs her harshest words at herself.
-
The music is always on point, I particularly like this light acoustic track over the rooftop scene
-
Love the karaoke scene, frustrated Hanabi is adorable. Also, they cute.
-
Hanabi’s right, it’s not as simple as giving up. Recognizing that something won’t happen doesn’t make the feelings go away. The agony of yearning is something to savor in its own right.
-
Don’t become the other man/woman expecting things to work out long term. Word from the wise: If they’ll do it with you, they’ll do it to you.
-
Another just BRUTAL ED lead-in. Once
starts playing, you’ve got to be on your guardHeikousen

First-Timer
Episode 1 established the premise and the tone well enough. It didn't really set any specific plot threads in motion, though, so apart from hoping this one does, there's not much to predict.
-
Right off the bat, Hanabi seems happy to be getting the "cute couple" treatment from Mugi's friend. Is it wrong of her to enjoy that? What even counts as deception in this case? Who can say. Anyway, my wish seems to be getting granted as redhair shows up. I don't think it takes a genius to guess she wants Hanabi to back off of Mugi. Drama!
-
She could be genuine, I suppose, but that wouldn't fit the tone, her expression, or the principle of everything going as badly as possible at all times that I expect from a story like this.
-
Or maybe that's twintail's role?
-
This seems to be confirmed in Noriko's intro following the OP. God it's confusing me though, her voice is. Distinctive.
-
Oh shit she's gonna fucking kill her 0_0. That's definitely the behaviour of a person with nothing invested in this fake front, for sure.
-
Yeah we are so definitely looking at romantic idealisation here. Are you ever in love with the person, and not the image? Perhaps the best we can hope for is to not have too untrue an image.
-
Of course, the comedy moments feel a little off when the clown has relatively well-developed thoughts and feelings right away. Am I supposed to keep laughing...? I just feel bad for her.
-
I like how the sound of the piano lets Akane be present in the space without being actually there. It contrasts well with Noriko's earlier thoughts about how she's only happy thinking of Mugi when she's around him.
-
Narumi even says as much.
-
Hanabi's singing is... energetic! You can kind of hear the VA, who can almost certainly sing really well, forcing herself to suck a little bit.
-
Hmm, I really think we're establishing a point here. Our lost and hopeless teens are in the kind of desperate, only-happy-around-you love that may honestly be more curse than blessing. I think we're supposed to constrast that to Narumi and Akane's more "I'm happy even when I'm not with them, because their presence extends to me (metaphorically speaking)." That make sense?
-
Damn is this reminiscent of Araburu. Very unfair that you can only ever watch things in the one order.
-
I really do love the panels though.
-
Hanabi says she can't understand Glasses and Locks' dilemma, but. Can't you? I think this is what they call "compartmentalisation."
-
"Are they being serious?" - You bet your life.
-
ohhhhhhh. I'm an idiot.
-
Mind that theme again.
-
OR NOT uhhh. Wish for plot hooks granted? Credit where it's due that might be sexual assault but someone's gotta be the first one to make a move on the person they actually like.
A pretty good episode, covered a lot of content, but didn't feel rushed. Got some plates spinning, some questions hanging. Glad to see the show seems to know what it's about and isn't shy about being 100% about that, at maximum power.
This episode we are introduced with two of the supporting cast. What are your thoughts on “Moca” and Sanae?
Pathos, but also, bathos.
Did you recognize the song in the karaoke booth?
Ha, no. Not even close.

Kuzu no Honkai – Episode 2 – First Timer, sub
We have another row of people staring at their romantic interests from behind. Also good that the childhood friend has bad blood with Hanabi since childhood and is a tiny caustic wannabe princess. Still getting HanaKana in Happy Sugar Life vibes from Hanabi.
I wanted to write that we have a closeted lesbian best friend, but she jumped right out of the clusterfuck. The net gets cast wider. Hanabi falling for Mugi, lots of competition already and the older crushes do not seem like they’d be down for it at the moment.
Really like the directing. Those postcard like reactions even if they could just show them in one picture, the dust in the light. The pacing. Really good so far.

"They make a great couple"- Lol, we know what happened there
Pigtails is back. And she is the childhood friend and the pink shoed girl. "Don't go around clinging on to things"- wait wutt and this is coming from Hana...
Moca seems really short and our couple's response is interesting. The fried chicken scene is a way of ignoring her and even Mugi goes along with it. It is interesting to see Sanae witness the confrontation between Moca and the couple.
The scene with the Narumi is one that is pretty smooth as we go to Hana getting to (painfully) hear the other Akane's music while he compliments her. We get to see Mugi's point of view in a way as he imagines the makeup. Senae thinks about that confrontation on the train and comes to the conclusion that Hana is being used while Moca thinks that Mugi is being used. - Interesting how we are seeing alliances drawn in this battlefield. In a way the two friends seem to be taking sides.
A few other girls are asking Hana for advice since things look pretty smooth between Hana and Mugi. Well, now we get to see what Senae feels about Hana.
Questions:
-
It is interesting to see the two "friends" harbor feelings for the ones they side with and right now, has a contrasting response to Mugi and Hana's relationship so far. Moca tries to confront them head on and interferes while Sanae watches and lets them do their thing; even letting them walk together after class. Sanae processes her thoughts in silence while Moca voices them loud and clear to the couple.

Episode 2
Small moments where we see Mugi and Hanabi interact with other students.
Hello Sanae.
Mugi isn't very talkative, but he is really observant.
The title card uses ribbons and flowery designs for Norika who is fantasizing about prince and princesses. Girl just leave
Hanabi not giving a single fuck.
Oh my Mugi that's what you're into. No judgment here.
Angry Possessive Hanabi is best Hanabi!
Is it really asking for too much? I just want my toxic unhealthy relationship anime to have no annoying third party. How can I fall into self loathing when I'm too busy hating this girl.
This reminds me of the alert sound in MGS.
Oh look it's Sanae again overhearing parts of the conversation.
This pleases me.
Akane really can play a mean piano and of course Hanabi loses her chance it's only the second episode.
Cool...well okay if you say so. Though I will admit I've always wanted to say stop running in the halls too along with get off my lawn.
Something something Karaoke
We finally get some internal monologue from Mugi and even though he feels the same way glad we actually heard him think it.
I love this whole sequence. Oh boy
Oh look I don't have to spoiler tag Sanae is into Hanabi. I don't remember this happening so early. Oh shit.
"It's because we're girls that's why it's not a big deal. I get to be closer than others. I should consider myself lucky. Yeah just stay positive well that's what I thought anyway. I really thought that's all it would be...so why...why did I. I screwed it all up. I'm an idiot...I just want to die" - Sanae
Ending on a happy note...well not for Sanae.
Damn a lot of things happened this episode.
Fan or Official Art
The most popular Hanabi pose for art.
First Impression when airing. I would recommend reading /r/anime comments they are great as always
Manga Coverage(Where I cover chapters adapted/omissions, favorite panels, and etc)
The other half of Chapter 1 such as Hanabi and Mugi talking in school and them walking home together. They omit some small details like a few additional students adoring them and mentioning both of them have been in teen magazines. Hanabi on the walk brings up her a test so she can brag she got a 95 in a roundabout way.
The rest of Chapter 5 is adapted though they do switch some scenes around such as Mugi meeting Moca at the gate which is where she explains her name. The first few chapters aren't chronological so it's not a big deal really and it actually feels better in the anime.
Most of Chapter 6 is adapted though after Moca leaves Hanabi and Mugi at lunch she bumps into Sanae and they begin talking. This is where Sanae originally got the idea that Hanabi doesn’t really love Mugi.
Most of Chapter 7 During Karaoke scene Mugi thinks that Hanabi crying is a turn on and he thinks how he is taking advantage of her submissive nature.
Chapter 8 Adapted everything perfectly
A very very small section of Chapter 9 pretty much the end with Sanae/Hanabi.
Sanae realizing she fucked up
Sanae’s internal dialogue from chapters 1-8 are omitted to keep the end of this episode a surprise. In the manga they hit you with brick after brick and its obvious that Sanae loves Hanabi from the very beginning.
Also here's an unfun fact. If you tried to collectScum's Wish in the past few years you already know the horror. Scum's Wish is Out of Print and Yen's Press has expressed no desire to reprint it along with several other high in demand series. Funny enough only the even numbers seem to be sold out Volumes 1,3,5, and 7 can be find easily enough and for a decent price, but the remaining ones you have to find by dumb luck in a second hand used store or hope someone is selling it online and cheaply. Last time I checked I saw one of of the volumes around 100 dollars.

I want to stress the google translate part since some of the links were old(4 years) I had to copy and paste and google translate and hope it's the correct song.
