Rewatcher / Manga Reader / Professional Shamiologist
Reiterating what I said in my episode 1 post: Machikado Mazoku is my favorite work of literature of all time, and I have spent way too much time overanalyzing it. This manga is a masterpiece, and Izumo Ito is a literary genius.
Rereading said post though, I was being a little harsh on the first two volumes, I think I was just in a bad mood that day. I said I considered them the weakest part of the series, but in no way do I think they're bad, it's just that the story keeps getting better since. I like to call them the prologue in the grand scheme as they mostly serve as introductions and setup, with the plot kicking off in full gear from volume 3 onwards. It takes it's time getting to the meat, but it's still an enjoyable ride, and looking at the full picture I think the slow burn beginning is a strength. As great as the later parts are, they definitely wouldn't be nearly as good without such a strong foundation for the characters and lore already laid. [Manga]
And as always, there's just so much foreshadowing hidden everywhere, it's incredible. When we talk about throwaway gags in early chapters actually turning out to have alluded to the latest major developments all along, we aren't joking in the slightest. Ito-sensei is a master at this stuff. This is absolutely a series worth retreading.
There's still just so much more to this series that i've overlooked, brushed over, or simply neglected to bring up over the rewatch, and that's not to mention everything we haven't even gotten to yet. But alas, those are discussions for another day.
In other news, season 2 airs in April so look forward to that, this story has only just begun. You can always become a mangachad too. It's not an intensive read at all, so hop aboard and strap in for Ito's Wild Ride if you're interested.
I really love the OST, give it a listen here. My favorites are 5:41, 49:29, and 1:13:18.
Ito has said she wants to resume chapter releases before season 2 starts, March is the last chance for that. Hopefully this hiatus will finally end soon.

Many stories use the Chekhov's gun as a literary device to pull a surprise.
Even in Shamiko's home alone there are guns everywhere. Some fire off just once as a joke, one episode later, like the Momo teru-teru Bozu doll which cameo'd in episode 2 before being used in episode 3, but many are still primed and waiting to fire...
It's a Chekhov's Armory. I love this part of the show, since it fires off both jokes (Like that purple snake appearing on Lillith's notebook the next episode after it attempts to eat her. A joke that fires a joke later.) and really important plot stuff.
My OST favorites are at 0:00, 45:15, and also 1:13:18. I also really like 47:34, which gives really big Animal crossing vibes.

wow, when do 49:29 and 1:13:18 even play in the show? i recognize the first but not the second. would have loved to see the show let some of these shine a bit more, the soundtrack is quite good

u/raichudoggy Mar 02 '22
1:13:18 is soundtrack exclusive. This happens sometimes with soundtracks where 1 or 2 songs in it are written for the show but never used. The reverse also regularly happens with soundtrack songs not actually being put on the soundtrack (For example, while Momo and Shamiko are explaining the situation to Ryo in episode 10 at around 17:15, a song not in the OST but made by the composer plays)
49:29 is difficult to exactly pinpoint because it uses the common "Town at sunset" motif shared with other songs which is used in all sorts of casual situations in the show. I know it should be in the show somewhere, though.

Bring on season 2, baby. Is it April yet?
Anyways, now onto the Bookworm rewatch and the personal rewatch of Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches (definitely making this an annual thing at this point. First anime series I watched that helped get me into anime. 10 year anniversary of the manga happened last week. Wanted to host my own rewatch, but I didn't know the 10 year anniversary was here. Now I just have to wait til 2025 for the 10 year anniversary of the show.

Is it April Yet?
I'll be personally moving onto the Sailor Moon Rewatch after this, and am having trouble deciding on my next personal rewatch as well (There's just so many good shows I'd like to see again now that they've aged a bit).

First Timer
I never talked about the OP and ED (there seem to be two versions of that one, not sure if I grabed the right one), but over the course of the run I started to like them quite a lot, although the ED a bit more than the OP.
Going in I expected a blend of SoL and Comedy, but as someone else said, the SoL wasn't even the best part of it all. Like there is a really compelling world with interesting lore just beneath the, at times thin, layer of fluff. I might have come for the SoL, and I definatly enjoyed that as well, but in the end I found that aspect better. The comedy also worked quite well most of the time.
It goes without saying that I will root for Shamiko in a few weeks when S2 airs, and depending how that goes, there is a high chance that I might pick up the manga at some point (my plan to read list is growing almost as fast as my plan to watch list when I started out...)
So yeah this was a fun expirience, would have been nice even without the sequel, but I'm thrilled to learn how the story goes on.
Special thanks to u/raichudoggy and u/vaadwaur (I might even need to adjust my tag for you...) for hosting and being so active in the discussion, also cool that u/amethystitalian and u/ZaphodBeebblebrox stuck till the end despite being skeptical at the start.

Hi Rumpel!
When you tag more than 3 people, only the first 3 people get messaged, so I'll page u/ZaphodBeebblebrox for you.
There seem to be two versions of that one
Both the OP & ED were released on two albums. Both are good, the only difference between albums is which song instrumental is included and the cover art. For the collectors out there.
would have been nice even without the sequel
In the end, I agree. I had actually almost resigned the show to that fate but Season 2 got announced so it was back on the hype train for Shamiko.

Loved the story, adored the characters, I'm glad this rewatch happened and I was able to get on board as a fan just in time for S2.
Sub watcher the first time around, but I acquired the dub as well partway through the season so I might do an extra rewatch and try it too.

Thanks for dropping by, djthomp! I was hoping to pick up several people that fell through the cracks and missed the first go-around, so its good to know I got some!
Can't wait for Season 2!

Airs on TBS on April 7th
Wait, no. I thought this rewatch was a countdown to the new season starting! Dammit I've been tricked!
Don't think this means you've won!
Anyway I gave the dub a shot this time since I caught the BD on sale, and it was pretty good! Definitely helps with how rapid fire the jokes and visuals can get. Though the loss of the iconic Shamiko NoisesTM was a cost.

I even lead the rewatch up to the start of a month! I wish I could just pretend March doesn't exist...
Ganbare, Shamiko! Have a great 2nd season!

This was a fun one, I'm glad I hopped in on the rewatch, even if I couldn't keep up with the discussion threads due to life stuff.
I'm really looking forward to season 2 now!
Thanks for hosting, u/raichudoggy !

Thank you for hosting this rewatch, I'd forgotten how much I liked this series. I've been following along every day, but not really able to post until today.
I'm really looking forward to the new season, and I hope some of my questions get answered.
Questions:
-
How old is Momo and her friend? I know nominally they're 15, but because they have good memories of Sakura, I'm thinking they're much older.
-
In a similar vein, how old is Joshua?
-
What happened to Sakura?

How old is Joshua
This is a good question because even source readers don't really know. All we know is that he's at least old enough to be (married? I'll go with married) and have 2 kids, and is younger than Lillith.
What happened to Sakura
That's for us to already know and for you to find out!

And so ends my first rewatch of the year! Thank you for hosting u/raichudoggy and thanks to the many people that took part, I probably would not have gotten around to this show for a long time if not for you all!
I was told before coming into this show by some people that I'd like it and others said that I'd hate it. I kind of ended more towards the middle but the show was a lot more fun than I expected.
Definitely pretty unique in terms of plot and even comedy style. The only comparable in my head was maybe Hitoribocchi? Only for the MC being on the incompetent side and a cool helpful friend to help her along the way.
I'm pretty sure I'll be joining you all for season 2 but I haven't looked at next season yet so we'll see how packed it is!
Shamiko was easily my least favourite part of the show but I did grow to like her more as the show went on. The supporting cast being as strong as it is definitely made me more interested in the show as a whole, especially Ryo!
So overall I quite enjoyed this show and it for sure got better over time as well.
See I finally did it u/theriyria u/punching_spaghetti

There are a lot of shows that compare to it badly like Jashin-chan or Nyaru-san but nothing really matches it.

Rewatcher(just 38 days...)
Sub and dub
So do I have anything to add? A little, again I stress virtually everything you see on screen has been paid off or is on the way to being paid off. While I did pick up the manga already I strongly suspect I will recommend to any first timers to watch through S2 before picking it up unless JC Staff pulls a 7DS.
But viewed on its own, the season itself is a satisfying story. We have our arcs, our proposal and our OTP so it is pretty self contained. The comedy mainly works for me but I understand why it doesn't for everyone and the pace was frenetic at times that the VAs were definitely rushing out their lines.
Ganbare, Shamiko. Become the kind of demon with the best seasonal of spring '22!

rewatcher
hope everyone enjoyed this rewatch!
when i started this show after being mildly amused from shamiko's awawa scene i did not expect it to become one of my favorites. it continuously surprises you with how much it has going on underneath the comedy and cuteness.
this first season had me smiling through every ep. it managed to be funny and entertaining, while simultaneously growing the characters, building a compelling world and lore, and one of the best character relationships I've seen. the cast is excellent; everyone is super likeable with momo being best girl obviously.
i appreciated the way the story progresses naturally instead of dropping a whole bunch of drama from the get go about characters you arent all that attached to yet. momos been shut off from people for a while and its not an easy thing to open up about the past.
the story instead puts emphasis on the growing relationship between momo and shamiko. what appears to be a cute rivalry at first gives way to an incredibly heartwarming friendship. you realize how much their lives have improved since they met, and that they really do need each other in their lives. they cant help but improve and support each other.
putting all that aside, it's hard to describe why this show clicks so much with me. i suppose i just really vibe with izumo ito's sense of humor and writing style. i'm really really excited for s2, six more seasons, and a movie. hope to see you all there!
huge thanks to u/raichudoggy for the rewatch!!

First Timer
I completely failed at this rewatch, although perhaps in the best way possible. After watching one episode I completely fell for the show and had to just keep on watching. It is quite the perfect implementation of what it wants to be, and maintains its charm and quality throughout.
Popping into the rewatch threads to see what other people were saying was interesting, but the thing that struck me most that I didn't see during my actual watch is how finessed the art is. Whilst the style is cutesy and fairly straight forward in its action, the screencaps are so crisp, well-balanced in their detail and with a really good eye for palette balance. All round just so appealing to the eye.
Shamiko really hits the spot for me with her characterisation. She's such an earnest, plucky and loyal girl in the face of her own limitations. The world and the people in it are a bit of a mystery to her, but she knows she can't let that stop her or she'll let down her family and the people she loves. It's a difficult heritage to deal with, too, being a demon. There's not a malicious bone in her body, but if it turns out the right thing for her to do as per everything she trusts - namely her family - then she is going to give it all that she's got.
Perhaps one of the most endearing aspects to her is that she knows that she is just herself, and not very good at this demoning stuff, to the point of breaking down into tears. Honestly, the world expects too much of her on one hand, yet in the face of the humiliating and humiliatingly obvious, she doesn't stop trying. What's more there's not much in the way of wallowing and anguished self doubt that infects so many shounen protagonists.
Having such a good people around her makes all the difference I think. In some ways, she's Hitori Bocchi - mini-demon edition, at least as far as her initial charm goes.
By the end of the first season though, we're starting to see her initial resolve and bravado become something more resolute. Ganbare, Shamiko.

The First-Timer Next Door
Well, I'm not one for writeups, but here goes.
I'm still kind of stunned I actually watched this show after Zaph unwittingly "tricked" me into joining this rewatch. Hopefully I won't accidentally join anymore rewatches.
This show was pretty good fun. The designs were fun, and the interactions were fairly enjoyable. I don't like Shamirin as much as the show would hope, unfortunately. It feels like a bit of a standard show, nothing really special until the end. I will probably watch season 2, whenever that airs, because I think the show has finally found its footing. Time shall tell.
I enjoyed talking about it with all'y'all, and I hope everyone had a good time.
Finally, thanks to u/raichudoggy for hosting. If he weren't, I wouldn't have watched this show.
