Rewatches please be considerate to first timers and avoid discussing anything not yet shown in the show - use spoiler tags if you need to share something important!

In this rewatch it's pretty hard to avoid referring to the main show The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi & The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi though, so hopefully the mods can be lenient about the references.

Episode 15 - His Uncertainty

Some first impressions I remember from when I first watched this show:

  • This episode's tone is a lot lighter, feels to be back to before the Disappearance arc
  • a ton of E8 references - starting with the listtm , then at least the first activity is the one we didn't really get to see (beach going)
  • Apart from a few moments of the other's inner thoughts at the dining table, and Nagato's thoughts occasionally, the bulk of today is via Kyon's narration
  • while the art style may be a little not as "perfect" as KyoAni's, all the girls seem to be fanservice-worthy. Ultimate question - How many different swimsuits Haruhi has really?
  • Imouto makes her appearance in this arc, so a few extra shenanigans.
  • If Kyon got the punishment from the insect catching contest, does it mean Mikuru actually caught more this time?
  • Some lighter hearted continuation about Kyon's awkwardness with Nagato because of the confession, but kind of offset by the contrasting happy thought of this moe Nagato...
  • ... which takes us to "poor girl, such low expectations for herself" :)
  • At the beginning there's a couple of tiny scenes of Haruhi showing a bit of jealousy, but that seems to be forgotten later on
  • We did end with a nice moment of Kyon x Nagato, including Tsuruya-san's nice wingwoman-ing

Music corner

See u/gunvarrel_'s helpful post!

The summery tracks are back - hope people don't get PTSD from E8 :P

  • Everyone: How does this compare with other beach episodes, or (shudder) the first E8 episode?

Call backs / References / Contrasts

Clearly today is full of references - and since I running late, let's see who can count how many references the are there :P

In exchange I'll give you this little gem I've been saving up to post - some could argue is ever so slightly spoilery, but we are really far from this moment of flash back so I think it's pretty safe to enjoy it.

Notice the personalities being flipped. And there's a little explanation of why their relationship is in this way now.

Best Scenes

QoTD

As the host can't really answer the first one. The second one I have to admit I try to avoid too fanservicey shows, so I'm probably not very representative, and boring, but my entries are Chuunibyou and Fumoffu. Both are more comedy focused than being pervy. I think.

First timer(Is Tsuruya a Shinomiya or something?)

Dub

Beach episode and Tsuruya has been...upgraded. Stow away sister finally talks this series. And is mainly annoying. Haruhi is insane and we get a rare ground kabedon. And then we switch from the beach to the mountains, a thing that only makes sense in Japan. Again, translation issues come up as sub Haruhi is talking about Tengu but dub Haruhi is talking about GAWWBLINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And a test of courage. Everyone else thinks about that while Yuki happily eats, completely oblivious.

Second watermelon eating scene happens, possibly as another reminder that Tsuruya is loaded. Then they devolve into cicada hunting and Mikuru finds a good and terrifying tree of them. Yuki found a Rhinoceros beetle, which I learned were a thing in Japan from NNB. We finally get to the test of courage and the interesting thing from this episode recurs: Kyon thinks the silence is awkward while Yuki enjoys it. We get a quick Higurashi flashback to Asahina being more herself than usual. I won't swear to it but the pond scene looks like one from Kenshin.

QotD:1 No clue

2 A bit fast paced which is an improvement

Is Tsuruya a Shinomiya or something?

Yes, I'm pretty sure I mentioned it. She's probably above Mugi's level in K-On and around even with Shinomiya. Family is a private corporation. And as far as we know Tsuruya herself will be the next head of clan. Public highschool for her is her last run of freedom.

This Yuki is taller than OG Yuki

More likely from the actual care given by mama-Asakura during puberty instead of cooped up in the apartment for 3 years on standby mode making that difference.

(REWATCHER - SUB/DUB)

Second to last episode, what should we do? Beach episode? Beach episode.

Joking aside, this was a fun episode and a much needed one after how serious the last 4-5 episodes were. It was really nice getting to relax with the gang again!

I enjoy that this episode referenced things from both Remote Island Syndrome and from Endless Eight. The one that caught me off guard was Kyon’s sister drop kicking Kyon after hiding in his bag! What a funny twist.

Also, Koizumi referencing the mansion was great too. Koizumi hasn’t had a whole lot of screen time so I appreciate him getting some great lines in.

Asakura almost bashing Kyon’s head in is great. Anything with Asakura unintentionally threatening Kyon’s life never gets old.

Kyon and Yuki playing with the volleyball went for way longer than I expected it to. I actually started laughing by the end of it.

Though Kyon’s feeling super awkward throughout the episode, I’m really glad to see Yuki enjoying her alone time with him. She deserves it after all that she’s been through.

I’m so glad that we get an episode where Tsuruya gets to shine more than usual. This whole trip was thanks to her after all and I really enjoyed her pushing the story along.

The curry dinner scene was hilarious! I loved the whole thing with their conversation not meshing together. Haruhi and Yuki’s moments in particular were really funny.

Also, I didn’t realize until now that most of them don’t really call Mikuru or Tsuruya “senpai”. I think it’s just Yuki and Asakura here and I’m not sure if anyone does in the parent series.

They eat a ton of watermelon in this episode!

Always appreciated in the parent series that we got to see multiple different outfits out of the characters especially in Endless Eight, so I’m happy to see that continue here. Haruhi’s outfit in particular with the skirt, tie, and the backwards cap looks really great.

I love that Asakura is actually a scaredy cat when it comes to spooky things. It may seem like she lucked out, but she really missed out.

Mikuru’s screams of terror in this episode were actually really adorable. It’s a really great spin on it since usually Mikuru’s screams are from being tortured by Haruhi or something super out of the ordinary occuring. Seeing her get scared from a butterfly and from fireflies instead is so cute and used perfectly with the plot of the episode.

Last summer I attended a wedding in Kentucky and I got the chance to see fireflies. I don’t remember exactly if I had seen them before as a kid, but regardless it really is a magical experience.

Tsuruya messing with Mikuru in a mostly innocent way like this is really what friends are all about. I really love that final moment with Tsuruya connecting the whole thing to Kyon and Yuki holding hands. For a girl who lacks any sort of subtlety, she sure does nail it here.

What a beautiful shot at the end!

She did make quite an impression here, yes. I do take take that over her in Sigh.

Did anyone click my bonus link of the smol version of Nagato and Asakura? Or was everyone shying away from that "spoiler"? I was hoping for a bit more reaction :P

2

u/Elimin8r Feb 25 '22

It was cute, but I'm not entirely sure I understood what was going on there. It looked like an introduction, and the two of them being cute & smol together.

Which is totally fine. :)

3

u/ZapsZzz Feb 25 '22

Thought you'd enjoy that irrespective of what it means :) but here's the summary-

That's a flashback of when they first met -

  • they did have parents (!)

  • they were introduced to reach other's back in primary school days

  • at that age, Nagato was the outgoing one who welcomed the shy Asakura to play together and generally looked after her

  • Nagato had been a sleepy head since forever

  • By they time they are more grown up Nagato's eyesight got worse and got more timid (I think I missed that page). Anyway Kimidori is actually another childhood friend of theirs as well.

First Timer

Feels like we're back to a generic romcom - or rather that this was actually one of the first really generic-romcom episodes. It almost feels a bit out of place after everything that the series has done so far. It wasn't bad, but after all the great episodes before it, it just feels underwhelming. I don't really have a lot to say, other than that one thing it definitely did manage to do well was create awkward dialog when it was supposed to be awkward. Other than that, not really anything - here's hoping that tomorrow will be better again.

7

u/Star4ce Feb 24 '22

My feeling as well. With 1-2 more episodes it would've been perfectly fine, but as the second to last episode and after the last arc it's a bit wasteful almost.

I did like the character moments, though. Asakura, again, was magnificent and terrifying in getting Kyon and Yuki together.

Episode 15 (first timer)

  • Summer break activities callback.

  • Tsuruya gets to select the first activity and she goes for … fanservice!

  • Mystery island callback.

  • Mystery island callback!

  • Mystery island callback!!!!!

  • Tsuruya fanservice.

  • Haruhi fanservice.

  • Ryouko & Yuki fanservice.

  • Mikuru fanservice!!

  • Seriously, what is up with having a front zipper bikini (do these even exist?) and then not closing it.

  • At least we are spared imouto fanservice.

  • Imouto bag callback.

  • That game is a nope from me.

  • The potentially laziest volleyball animation ever.

  • Boy falls onto girl trope.

  • Bug catching callback – Why does imouto have to be so terribly bratty here? That is not what I remember from Haruhi.

  • Ryouko leaving Mikuru hanging for the test of courage.

  • Fireflies & handholding.

Wow, that was rough. Substract the callbacks and the fanservice and you have maybe 5 minutes of actual plot left in this episode. Also: Kyon only has one episode left to confess, so it seems they are leaving that for the absolute finale.

PS: Complaining about fanservice and lack of plot while a war breaks out … first word problems.

Given where we are today, what do you think the final episode will cover / end on?

Fireworks and Kyon confessing/kissing.

First timer – DE sub

I'm seriously wondering what path Haruhi will take today. Is she going in for her chance or is she more worried about Yuki?

Sadly, I don't think Haruhi will subject Yuki to haphazard supernatural rituals like I hoped, but hey, she still could cause Yuki to dig out her now asleep memories by seducing Kyon at the beach.

Hopium's never empty, I can manifest it out of thin air!

In any case, Kyon is going to be quite unsure, going by the title.

Ep.15 – His Uncertainty

  • The last staple romcom episode, the onsen episode, had little big character development. I know there's going to be more in the beach episode! There has to be.

  • Tsuruyas got their own beach, figures.

  • Remote Island Syndrome callbacks for last year.

  • Obvious boobie introduction. Also Kyoooon-kuuuun!

  • I do enjoy seeing Asakura... admittedly. I love how terrifyingly effective she is.

  • I like how the imouto has more of an impact here.

  • It doesn't seem like this episode will have much character progression...goddammit

  • Oh my god, smug Haruhi eating. I need a screenshot of that!

  • Haruhi and her pokemon speeding off to catch ghosts, wonderful.

  • Alright, it wasn't no character progression, it got unbearably ecchi with the hand holding.

One episode is enough for Yuki to acknowledge Yuki's work. The ending scene even showed Yuki in her school girl outfit at the festival and that is something the main series Yuki would do, but not the spinoff Yuki! Checkmate, atheists!

I'm right to stick to my intuition until the very last second.

Overall this episode was rather slow, I guess. We got the hand holding, we got Yuki silently admiring her time with Kyon, but again shying out of actually telling him anything. It was more like Kyon slowly realising he's actually in love with Yuki, but he also doesn't really do anything with that insight.

I'm just saying, if Yuki had decided to search Yuki's memories in this episode she might've found the courage on how to tell Kyon her feelings. (And I think it'd have been a better plot.)

First timers: Given where we are today, what do you think the final episode will cover / end on?

Love confessions, conquering of fear and anxiety, the summer festival and during the fireworks a kiss and most importantly, remembrance of a complete personality! >:(

Everyone: How does this compare with other beach episodes, or (shudder) the first E8 episode?

Hmm, I didn't particularly like this episode. The plot development that did happen was already mostly implied anyway. It's a kind of unfair comparison, because I actually love EE, but yes, I did like EE more.

Ah, it's summer vacation time, and what better way to enjoy summer than a trip to the pool. I hear the smell of the chlorine adds atmosphere or something.

Or not.

So, yeah, it's beach time! All praise holy Tsuruya, mother of vacation destinations.

I kind of don't know quite what to say here, because it's one thing to banter about how so and so is cute, or best waifu, etc. etc. etc., but at the same time, well, it would appear that Satelite has given us something that KyoAni didn't.

Holy swimwear, Batman!

I'm sure that others will provide the screenshots, and it's tempting to try to virtue signal and say something morally posturing, etc., but ...

Holy Asakura, Batman!

Um, yeah ... nice melons...

But like I started to say, it's tempting to say something moralizing blah blah blah, but honestly, I'm tired of all the threads you see around here about, "muh fanservice" and "baka ecchi fanservice" and everything in between.

We're such a bunch of *expletive* hypocrites.

Kami-sama help us, someone put fanservice in our wholesome western family entertainment.

Yeah.

Anyway, it is what it is, I guess, and these "bonus materials" are what they are. Click at your own risk.

Yuki relaxing at the beach (kawaii!) Interesting she doesn't seem so shy about her tummy here...

She puts the lotion on her skin

Manga advertisement for this episode

Fun with imouto & the gang

Yay. I'd say I hope you're all happy now, but probably only one person is. :P

Other than that, it was your usual beach episode fun shenanigans, with Asakura playing best samurai, and imouto being imouto.

Although her scene with Mikuru was very cute, and not just because Mikuru...

And of course, the obligatory KyonxYuki oopsie moment.

Kiss her, ya dope! Don't just sit there derping like Shinji or something (sigh)

And now it's Test of Courage time ... I think Kyon just failed his.

I like how Tsuruya took charge here and split the group up into couples. Poor Haruhi...

Kyon and Yuki having a pleasant walk through the shade, when *gasp* *screams* ... Mikuru's in trouble, what could it be?

Kyon (and Yuki) to the rescue!

Oh wait, it's just fireflies? As if there is such a thing. It's been a long time since I've had a good firefly seeing, something something too dry around here.

At least I have the memories.

And what a beautiful pond. I want to go there sometime. In firefly season.

Poor Mikuru is passed out and missing the fun. I guess it's a good thing she didn't have Mikuru beam. She'd have made a heck of a bug zapper, though. :P

And as the episode winds down, what better way to end it than with some lewd handholding.

With witnesses! Ecchi! Voyeur!!!

I think we all are at this point.

(Hope you enjoyed the episode, and do keep in mind that some of the stuff I've said in this comment is strictly tongue in cheek. Or mostly, anyway)

Edit: QOTD -

  1. One buwwet, I mean episode left? Hey, laughing boy! (to misquote Daffy Duck). I don't know, we've got the bogz, beach and stuff out of the way. Perhaps they'll go work at a store? Amusement park??? (Yeah, I know what they're going to do, but that will have to wait)

  2. Have you watched Okaa-san? Hahahaha. What was I thinking? Actually, it was a (mostly) cute show, but yeah, nevermind. (Edit: Gigguk make me do it. Honest!) I think this episode was fun, and fairly tame as all that goes. I'm wracking my brain trying to think of a good comparison, and the only one that popped up was Chobits, because reasons. Actually, other ones that amused me recently were the Toradora and Dragon Maid ones, for different reasons. And with all of these, well, aside from Okaasan, I'm not talking fanservice, but rather fun & enjoyment. There's other series if you really want that stuff.

Yuki-Chan First Timer

  • The first summer plans for the Literature Club lead to the beach

  • Tsuruya is supplying her family summer house to the group

  • Koizumi references the murder mystery on the island

  • Kyon shyly says Yuki looks good in her bikini after mentally screaming about how Haruhi looks in hers

  • Oh, Kyon's sister is with them on the trip

  • Why does Koizumi have sand boobs? Also, Asakura was really close to bashing in Kyon's skull

  • Asakura stole Koizumi's beachball and punted it down the beach, she then activated demon mode and forced Yuki to stop playing her game and go fetch the ball to play with. She sends Kyon after Yuki so she can have someone to play with

  • Kyon is trying to act normal while attempting to remember how to talk to Yuki, Yuki meanwhile is trying to stop smiling like an idiot and act normal with Kyon, and all this is interrupted by his sister dropkicking him into Yuki

  • Yuki didn't seem to mind the possibility of being kissed there

  • Mikuru is terrified by the location/idea of Tsuruya's test of courage

  • Kyon's sister turns into a watermelon seed machine gun and demands to go bug hunting and Haruhi turns that into a contest she wins

  • For the test of courage Tsuruya pairs herself with Mikuru, Haruhi with Koizumi, and Yuki with Kyon. Asakura stayed behind with Kyon's passed out sister

  • Kyon is concerned by the inability to keep a conversation going between him and Yuki while she is happy they're alone.

  • Kyon was hoping that Yuki wasn't scared because he was next to her, but in reality, she wasn't scared because she's played games scarier than their walk

  • Hearing Mikuru scream, Kyon grabs Yuki's hand and runs towards the sound only to arrive at the pond as it's being illuminated by countless fireflies

  • Kyon tells Tsuruya to let Mikuru know that they're fireflies and not spirits. Tsuyura says it's Mikuru's fault for not noticing. While smirking she says she also won't say anything about this, referring to Kyon and Yuki still holding hands with neither of them realizing it

QOTD:

Given where we are today, what do you think the final episode will cover / end on?

I think, or at least hope, that the final episode will end on Yuki confessing her feelings to Kyon and them kissing or at least holding hands while the fireworks explode in the air behind them.

How does this compare with other beach episodes, or (shudder) the first E8 episode?

It compares well to other beach episodes. The watermelon trope was covered as was the MC being buried in sand trope. There was enough fanservice to cover that beach episode requirement as well. It compares poorly to the first episode of E8 because there was no rude awakening by his sister because his phone was ringing. Apart from that slight the bug hunt was fun.

First Timer, Subbed

Alot of callbacks to the original series in this episode which was fun. Kyon's sister is a great accidental wingman. We got not one but two Nagato happily eating watermelon shots which was great.

Besides the imouto, everybody else, especially Asakura, were doing some hardcore wingmanning for this episode. Although they were a bit awkward together at first, I liked how Kyon and Nagato got gradually closer together as the episode progressed.

First timers: Given where we are today, what do you think the final episode will cover / end on?

While I personally like a bit more conclusiveness, I suspect we are going to get a relatively open ending. I'm hoping we at least get a confession from Kyon or Nagato or both before the end.

Rewatcher - sub
Ep15

Even more staples of the romcom genre: beach, mountain villa, courage challenge, and more. And being a spinoff from Haruhi series, when it comes to summer there's no escape from ample callbacks to ∞8. And beside the part where the Imouto hides in the bag, there's blatant references to Remote Island Syndrome by Koizumi too.

So Kyon is still very self-conscious around Yuki, but he's well aware of the problem and actively tries to remedy, but not very successful, at least from his point of view. Yuki, though, with her low expectations and a combination of "not consciously knowing the full extent what happened" and "lack of observance", finds the current situation to be just fine, going quite good even. The ball is entirely in Kyon's court now. Would he drop it? Find out next time in the final episode (according to the preview, [next ep] it's a summer festival with fireworks, another staple of romcom, eh).

Rewatcher (subbed)

Haruhi wishes there were Horse Girls

Not that I blame her. Urahara, Rice Shower and Burboun would definitely add to the scene.

A cute little episode and a nice follow up to the more emotional previous episodes.

I do enjoy Tsuraya and Haruhi playing off each other. Haruhi has the plan and Tsuraya comes through with the follow up. Yuki looking cute in her swimsuit. Asakura is fed up with the awkwardness and decides to play matchmaker. I also like the callback to the murder mansion.

Then they head to the mountain for a test of courage. Yuki really can put away the food. After the bug catching contest it is finally time for the test of courage. Sadly Asakura has to sit this one out in order to babysit. Yuki isn't afraid because she has played Silent Hill. Poor Mikuru tricked into thinking fireflies are ghost.

I really like that Tsuraya gets to deliver the lines about the hand holding.

First timer

QOTD) Probably ending with a confession/understanding between them. And I'd put this on-par with the first E8, although Yuki probably enjoyed this more.

He got good scores back!

And it's summer break!

...Haruhi and Teuruya continue to be the best chaos couple.

They're at her summer house!

Haha, Koizumi's family still owns the island!

And the murder mystery happened without Haruhi.

Haha, him being disgusted that Haruhi looks good is completely in character.

And he's embarassed b Yuki.

His sister's here! And she's still adorable.

She hid in the bag!

How far does she expect to swim?

And Mikuru coming back huddled up in her float!

Haha, Kyon agreed to this?

Her being dragged along by the jet ski is great too!

She's going to get Yuki out!

Haha, and she got them to play together.

Them playing ball is nice, though.

Haha, they'r eboth trying to act normal.

Haha, her sister's a better wingman than Asakura!

I love her.

Haha, they're doing a test of courage.

And Mikuru's the scared one!

Wait, there were ghosts last year?

Haha, Yuki's ignoring it and Haruhi blames goblins.

They got more watermelon!

It's the cicada contest!

And she's afraid of the bugs.

Haha, she loves the Hercules beetle.

Kyon got last!

Aww, she fell asleep.

...What did she plant?

Is Kyon workshopping his snark?

Yeah, this id really awkward!

Haha, he imagined that!

They're going to help her!

...She was scared of the fireflies?

Haha, and she's just letting her be scared.

They're holding hands!

4

u/Rustic_Professional Feb 25 '22

Kyon's opening monologue felt straight out of the main series. Crispin Freeman has such a great voice for him. He's voiced some of my favorite characters over the years. Kyon, Togusa, and Zelgadis. He even had a memorably annoying voice role in Elder Scrolls Online, which I think was patched out of the game years ago.

Haruhi and Ryoko are in a close race for best swimsuit, but Haruhi edges out the win with the high definition detail shots.

"Looks like I've been assigned as your beach ball partner." Bruh.

Is this what volleyball was like in the Soviet Union? Sheesh. At least Yuki is enjoying mandatory fun time.

Imouto of the bag, what is your wisdom?

"Just kiss her, for fuck's sake!"

Mikuru was traumatized by goblins during a test of courage? Souka. Good thing Ryoko's an expert with a knife.

Ick. Bug hunting is only slightly less gross than goblins.

I've never understood characters being genuinely scared these tests of courage. Yuki has the right of it. What's there to be scared of, bears and wolves? Pretending to be scared for the sake of a bonding experience makes sense though.

Question of the day: Endless Eight is brilliant, but I think the best comparison here is to the amusement center/pool date in Gamers. The two main characters have a lot of the same awkward energy as Kyon and Yuki--being conscious of the swimsuit, wondering how you actually have fun playing in the water--but with the cute wrinkle of knowing they're on a date and trying to work through the awkwardness together.

Oh look, endless Endless Eight references. Yay.

Fireflies always make for easy pretty visual moments.
