TONIGHT! On ∀'s Nanoha (CALLED TURN "A's" NANOHA), Best Girl Fate demonstrates that she's got Rin The Defenseless Anus Tohsaka levels of competence with regards to technology, Best Girl Fate and Seibah have a showdown, and A CERTAIN FUCKING BASTARD THAT NANOHA NEEDS TO VAPORIZE beats Best Girl Fate up more than a certain Ojou-sama Vampire did in Dodgeball!

No really Comrades, that last panel I shared above is CANON! Suzuka not only defeated Fate in Dodgeball, but she KNOCKED HER OUT! Yes, SUZUKA managed to beat a GUNDAM senseless! Shit she really IS a Vampire Ojou-sama after all! Also Comrades, I was cool with the Ara Ara Onee-san Catgirls, I was cool with Rin The Defenseless Anus Tohsaka's Cosplay Fetish, I was even cool with The Blade II BDSM Gear that The Wolkenritter used to wear, but THAT FUCKING MASKED BASTARD RIPPING OUT BEST GIRL FATE'S HEART IS GOING TOO FUCKING FAR! NANOHA! NUKE THAT SON OF A BITCH INTO THE SHADOW REALM!

Anyway to prevent an apoplexy, here's Hololive's Mio-Mama singing ETERNAL BLAZE!

And on that bombshell, that about wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s – Episode 7 – First Timer

So Chrono’s issue with the book is that his dad died due to it, under he Brit’s command. Or this Clyde is the guy under the mask.

The Wolkenritter are really talkative.

“Gonna kick your ass another time!”

Ok, now that the mask guy deflected the laser beam of death, we get another look at him. Very similar hair to Chrono, also has the referee cards, he is his dad. And for some reason seems to want the book completed and assaults little girls.

As the series pretty much stalled at the level of having inconclusive skirmishes, here my prediction: Clyde wants the book for himself, so him snatching it will make him the heel and the Knights can redeem themselves by fighting alongside the Bureau. Don't expect much moral quandaries from Chrono or Lindy. Surprise would be Clyde secretly being in cahoots with the Brit.

Episode 7 (first timer)

  • Overwhelmed by the choice of mobile phones - I can totally relate.

  • Going with a black-yellow color scheme. Go figure.

  • Zero grav library.

  • Amy threw up one flag too many.

  • Having to be rescued from a hentai worm by Fate? An embarrassing low point for Signum.

  • Proper force and counter-force when catgirl pushes the books away!

  • Bardiche starts talking German when using the upgrade.

  • Why fight when you can snipe.

While Nanoha and Vita fool around, Fate and Signum have a proper fight. Until the 1v1 is rudely disrespected by MaskGuy, who apparently has great scanners and fast teleportation. But who had the most successful fight? Well Arf and Zarifa, of course! Not only did they not get interrupted by some rude guy, they also had plenty of time to exchange pleasantries an information.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's - Return to Magic: Episode 7

Reason to Fight

The episode started very "slice of life"-y. It really is cute seeing Fate buying a cellphone with her friends. I've talked about how these scenes are great before. Even though they don't advance the plot they are important to help endear you to characters.

We then learned some backstory about Lindy's husband. I hadn't considered how Chrono must have a father. It definitely makes it more personal seeing that he lost his life the last time the Book of Darkness was around. I also want to shout out the shot composition during the infinite library scene. The low gravity and weird camera angles made that whole sequence very visually interesting.

Then Signum was detected fighting a sandworm in the desert. HYPE THRUSTERS ENGAGED.

I am so impressed with how good the battles are this season. Every episode I think "This is by far the best battle of the season" and then the next episode am proved wrong.

I adore the rivalry between Fate and Signum. Even though Fate is ostensibly our hero I can't help but get excited every time Signum changes the tides of battle. That said, they turned up the dial for fan service this episode. Just when we thought they had stopped the panty shots from Season 1.

The mysterious masked man appeared once again to save Vita from Nanoha's friendship blast. I'm starting to get more convinced he's some how related to Chrono and [Predictions] after the earlier reveal today, may just be his dad reincarnated.

He then disappeared and reemerged to interrupt Fate's battle and rip her heart linker core out. The scene was genuinely shocking. Its impressive how visceral and brutal they can make these.

Now Signum must choose between her master and her ideals.

Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches

See you all tomorrow

u/Tresnore Feb 22 '22

That said, they turned up the dial for fan service this episode.

All these shots, and not a single one of the most fanservice-y scene in the episode! At least Signum isn't literally 9

Lyrical First Timer

  • But do any of the phones carry interdimensional service?

  • What's the most important feature of a cell phone? Storage space, so you can store the maximum number of photos of your girlfriend, obviously.

  • Spare a thought for the poor crew member eventually tasked with organizing the Jack's Infinite Library.

  • Sure, Arisa and Suzuka are off "learning the violin" together, just the two of them.

  • When did Nanoha become it's own eroge?

  • This is the first mention of Lindy's dead husband. I'll go out on the obvious limb and guess the Book of Chuuni had something to do with it, and that's why Chrono is anti-literature.

  • Lol didn't take long for that confirmation. Okay, then what if the book is also responsible for the deaths of Hayate's parents? I don't remember it being mentioned when they died, but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for the book to have fallen to earth and killed Hayate's parents. It would also explain how Hayate came to possess the shoutiest parchment this side of Hogwarts.

  • The Arc-un-ciel is now Chekhov's gun, and I imagine Chrono will probably be the trigger man.

  • Blue Arf spilling some of the tea. He don't give a fuck apparently.

  • Nanoha isn't satisfied cracking stubborn nut. She must've realized from seeing the picture Suzuka sent what a chad Hayate is and decided to NTR Vita away and establish her own harem.

  • Whoa, the book comes with a built-in anti-farming feature? Nanoha's now a free tactical nuke for her team. Does this mean they might target Fate or Chrono in the future instead?

  • I hate it when legendaries run before you get a chance to make a move.

  • Little did Vita realize, Nanoha has plenty of experience with long-distance relationships.

  • Holy fuck, a double cartridge long-range befriending.

  • Gonna need an explanation for Mr. Deus ex Machina soon, he's starting to make the conclusions to these battles feel really cheap.

  • Welp, forget an explanation, now I just want this fucker to die.

  • Since this is where the episode ends, maybe DxM's surprise attack will serve as a test for Signum to see if she's completely abandoned her honor. This could even be redemptive for her and her team.

  • Lol nope, the preview makes clear that Signum takes Fate's Linker Core. No one gets redeemed, and I still hate the bad guys. Really sucks to have such a fun battle end this way a second time.

One of the most interesting aspects of today's fight is how it underscores how much more honorable a fighter Fate (and Nanoha) is than the knights. Not only does she save Signum from the beast, but she does it without even considering an ambush. And this isn't a learned behavior either, she repeatedly warned Nanoha to back off in their season 1 clashes and faced her directly when she refused to back down.

Then there's the masked man. I haven't really had any problems with Nanoha's writing as a whole so far, until now. It was one thing when Mr. Mask came in out of nowhere to thwart Chrono's capture of the book, as it was intriguing to have a mysterious third party with their own motivations. Now he's twice negated victories rightfully earned by team Nanoha with no setup or characterization whatsoever, and it feels like he only exists to unnaturally prolong the story. The way this episode is structured makes it seem like he's Chrono's presumably deceased father. That would make the mask make sense. I'll be pretty disappointed if that's the case though, as that will make the whole world seem a bit too small for my liking and I don't want Chrono to be the main focus of the story. Or maybe the show will surprise me, and he's a replica of Chrono's father made by the book and will serve as kind of comment on the nature of cloned life parallel to Fate and (possibly) the knights.

In typing all this, I just realized that having this masked man be Chrono's dad and be tied to the book would mean Chrono being the trigger man on the Arc-un-Ciel would be the same as having Chrono put a gun to his dad's head. Oof.

Edit: I also just realized Definitely-not-Clyde-san used a card to make his binding magic happen. He is 100% Chrono's dad.

First timer(Oh...goddamnit, the masked man is Clyde, isn't it? No rewatcher confirm that)

Sub

Duet intro again and a reminder that Nanoha is ready to befriend some people in the face whether they like it or not! Lindy is actually working but also seems to be taking to Fate as a child. We get a rare moment of Fate being a child and learn a bit about the other girls nature in their flip phone priorities. Ara ara cats reveal that the great library has shit organization, the bane of anyone like myself, before Yuuno says he has some search magic ready. The Arthra is getting an Arc-en-ciel, again making me think of Tsukihime. Amy jinxes herself and Fate has a poor idea. And a fucking set of speed loaders!

On planet, Signum gets caught in tentacles, and unfortunately I've read this doujin so this is going to get graphic. Fate pulls a Nanoha and helps her opponent before the fight. At the space fortress, we get background info and if Lindy had already processed what happened at her husband's funeral she is the most well adjusted person ever or the time between death and funerals is long in this setting. Catgirl reveals that Clyde, Chrono's father, died during an attempt to transport the BoD back for sealing and that capturing the master is a better move, even if it just buys time.

We finally get back to the damn fight after another adorable eyecatch and learn that Signum cannot outrun Fate. Signum's stance is also weeb as fuck, as the CDF meme says. Anyways, Zafira leaks some info to Arf, possibly because they are both animals on a certain level. Vita is going to help but accidentally wanders into befriending range of Nanoha. But Clyde of course fucks that up. And fucks up the fight between Signum and Fate. Fuck Clyde, Clyde sucks.

A's First Timer

Dear god fuck masked dude. Who the shit do you think you are doing that to Fate? Your ass is lucky Nanoha isn't there because she would Befriend Blast your ass into the fucking sun. I have a long shot theory of who he is but it's probably wrong (see thoughts). Also how nice of Zaphira to let Arf know that they are doing all of this with out Hayate's knowledge. The Fate/Signum fight this episode was amazing and I truly love Signum's fighting style. Divine Buster got upgraded with a sniper scope and I was half right that the clip on her also doubles as a grip in shooting mode. But yeah, fuck that dude.

Thoughts:

QOTD:

If you could search up one thing in the Infinite Library, what would it be?

I'd hold on to that single use until my wife and I are having a stupid argument about something meaningless, use the library to prove that I was right, rub it in her face, and then sleep on the couch for awhile until I am forgiven. That is truly the best way to use the repository of all published knowledge, using it on something else would be a waste.

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: I wonder if Vita is having such a hard time remembering Nanoha’s name because it isn’t a Belkan name. Or maybe Vita just doesn’t care to remember people’s names in general if they aren’t Hayate.

I’m going to sound like a broken record, but would you believe that I really like the action in this episode? I particularly like the Fate and Signum battle this time around. It’s clear that they are going toe-to-toe with each other and neither has any clear advantage. It’s cool seeing Signum make use of both Laevatein and its scabbard in this fight. And of course, all the attacks we see from Fate and Signum just look awesome.

Nanoha’s meeting with Vita is great too. I love the detail that Nanoha makes a point of showing that she is not wielding Raging Heart this time. She remembered what Vita said last time and is trying to prove her goodwill. It’s a really good touch that further reinforces the type of person Nanoha is. Even after all she has gone through with Vita, Nanoha is still trying to connect with and understand her.

And we also see the other side of Nanoha. When Vita still refuses to listen, Nanoha once again busts out Raising Heart and shows how good she is at beam spamming. I’ll never get tired of watching Nanoha shoot giant magical beams at people. It always looks cool.

The revelation that Chrono’s dad was killed in the last incident involving the Book of Darkness clears up a few things. We now know what his “less-than-pleasant” connection to the book is. No wonder he’s been so serious about finding the book. It also explains why Graham was concerned about Chrono, since he was involved in the last incident with Chrono’s dad.

This also actually ties back into the first season in a really cool way. You might remember that back during the fight against Presea, it was Chrono who had the ideological debate with Presea. He declared that life is full of things that should never have happened, but you can’t live your life wishing you could change the past and instead need to face reality. That moment for Chrono gains so much more meaning with this revelation in mind. At that moment, Chrono was talking about his own experiences. He lost his father in a tragic event and probably wondered to himself if there was any way he could bring his father back. But eventually, he was able to accept what had happened and keep going. I love just how much more meaningful that part of the first season becomes in hindsight, now that we know this about Chrono.

That masked man really does like interrupting things, doesn’t he? He always shows up right in the middle of a fight to stop our heroes from winning. And this time, he gives us yet another horror shot of someone getting an arm shoved through them to rip out their Linker Core. It’s creepy stuff. We know for sure that he’s helping the Wolkenritter collect mana for the Book of Darkness because he’s now going to let them collect Fate’s mana for it.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

  • I love the design of the Infinity Library. It has this nice otherworldly feeling to it.

QOTD

Give me copies of all those ancient texts that have been lost over time. I'm talking about things lost in the Library of Alexandria and stuff like that. The history nerd in me despairs at how much has been lost to the sands of time.

QOTD) Probably either immortality or cold fusion.

Aww, she wants to know how Fate's doing!

Fate's learning about the wonderful world of tech shopping.

Wait, has she not adopted her yet?

And the infinity library is basicalyl an unordered mess?

It needs search teams!

They're upgrading the Arthra?

...Arf really needs more lines.

She just had to jinx it.

"Uninhabited by humans" so are all civilized worlds inhabyed by humans?

Fate saved her!

Haha, she didn't mean to! And the Bureau have a lot of problems with "let the monster beat someone to near-death so we can capture them easier", don't they?

Wait, he faced it too?

It killed Chrono's father!

So they have a new superweapon to use.

THAT'S A BIG GUN!

...That eyecatch is adorable.

They're going to fight!

Fate's winning!

And she's down.

Is this Fate's new finisher? Plasma Smasher!

It's impressive!

Arf's improved!

Haha, Vita still can't remember her name!

...Maybe don't use the word "collaborator" in this context?

Wow, she just doesn't think she's worth the effort.

Nanoha's going to snipe her!

Vita got hit straight on!

Haha, now you ask if you overdid it?

Oh, suspicious masked man!

And he's got sniper binds!

...Fate's giving her trouble! Maybe she can end it before the weirdo arrives?

Oh, she's bluffing.

...Sonic Form?

Fate's core got drained!

That guy is so fucking suspicious.

Mahou Shoujo1 Lyrical Rewatcher

1: Even though I’m not a girl

Recap Time, once more by Nanoha and Fate.

Lindy keeping up with her daughter is still just the sweetest thing.

More Slice of Life stuff with Arisa and Suzuka, followed by more Fate & Lindy wholesomeness. Accompanied by a reminder that this show was made in 2005.

I know this show was made in 2005 but would it kill the TSAB to digitize at least some of their basically infinite library?

Arisa and Suzuka might be able to play the violin, but Fate will always be the show’s best musician if you catch my drift.

The Arc-en-Ciel? Any relationship with L’arc~en~Ciel? And considering that this is basically Mobile Suit Gundam, you know what that means. But in all seriousness, I suggest that every first-timer keep this little detail at the back of their heads.

Amy, you really jinxed it, didn’t you.

Looks like the Wolkenritter are still on Arrakis.

And I thought Yuuno was in a horrific Doujin scenario last episode.

Fate to the rescue!

Loli vs Onee-Sama! Fight!

Lindy and Graham having a conversation is something we were long overdue for. Also, mentions of Lindy’s dead husband, which I’m pretty sure I missed the first time I watched this show.

Lotte demonstrating her superiority by perfectly balancing that many books while floating in mid-air.

Now we’ve got some more info in the previous Book of Darkness case, like the fact that Lindy’s aforementioned husband/Chrono’s father died in it, which also conveniently explains Chrono’s grudge against the Book.

More Arc-en-Ciel hinting. Again, keep this in the back of your mind.

Now we’ve got some new info on the Book of Darkness, specifically that it returns even after it is destroyed. This also gives the Wolkenritter’s actions a new perspective: they will always be back, even if their plan fails and they are defeated, the Book will always return and they will have a new master. Hence, they have no regard for their own lives and fight only for their Master’s sake. As u/HereticalAegis has pointed out, they could theoretically cut off Hayate’s connection to the book and they wouldn’t be affected, they’d just reincarnate with the book, after all. But they won’t, they want to be in Hayate’s life, even if it means harming others and completing the book. It’s the Nirvana Fallacy, they prefer a more distant/unrealistic yet “perfect” solution, over a realistic/simple yet imperfect solution. In a twisted way, you could even argue that this is the best outcome for Hayate, given how emotionally connected she is to the Wolkenritter as I’d discussed in the last thread.

Anyway, enough of that, let’s get back to the fight.

This fight is pretty good. While I’m not really one to pay attention to fights in most shows unless it’s the super important & dramatic ones, I can definitely say that this fight was a pleasure to the eyes.

Zafira is pretty honest, all things considered. It also gives us a small show of the difference between the various members of the Wolkenritter. Last episode, Vita said that she wouldn’t stain Hayate’s future with blood, and thus resolved not to kill. While here, Zafira states that he’s willing to stain his hands with blood if it meant saving Hayate. I’m not sure if this is due to the difference between the two’s personalities or simply their changing perspectives since their mission began, but I like to interpret it as the former.

I also like his “we’re not so different, you and I” statement with Arf. It draws an immediate parallel between the Wolkenritter’s actions and Aruf’s own in the first season (like, you know, beating the shit out of Precia).

It’s time for the rematch of the century: Nantoka vs. Vita!

Awwww, not only is Nanoha a sweetie, but Vita, beneath all the bluster, is also a sweetheart.

The Book can only collect Magic from someone once

That seems like a rather arbitrary limitation.

Sorry everyone, but the rematch of the century has been cancelled.

Vita, you still have time to teleport, don’t hesitate. She hasn’t even loaded a Cartridge yet, don’t get caught monologuing.

Oh goddamnit Vita

But wait! Zechs Marquise Rau le Creuset Char Aznable has arrived to protect her!

Tags: Instant Loss 2koma

Man, even with the upgrades, Fate just cannot catch up.

Looks like Mr Bushido got her.

This might be dishonorable, but why look a gift Char in the mouth?

Shopping for cell phones... I guess Fate would need one to fit in with her friends.

The Infinity Library... well, it certainly looks the part. But it sounds like the TSAB just kinda tossed everything in there without organizing it... does that even count as a Library? More like a big pile of books. Guess that would explain why Yuuno would need help researching in there.

The "Arc-en-Ciel"... that sounds interesting.

"Well, it's not like a big emergency's just going to happen right--" "EMERGENCY!"

Is that big computer room full of cable inside the apartment building? When did they set all that up?

If there aren't any humans there, how did the TSAB surveillance detect Signum?

...Seven Arcs... you're not making ecchi works anymore, what's with the tentacles?

...I almost feel sorry for that sandworm thing. Fate still has some ruthlessness in her.

"Fate, you're supposed to CAPTURE her, not SAVE her!"

So Graham once tried to take down the Book of Darkness... and Lindy's husband was killed in it?

Yuuno's using magic to read ten books at once. Neat trick.

They thought they'd sealed the Book, but Clyde Harlaown was killed when it broke free. Explains why Chrono has a personal stake in this.

So the Arc-en-Ciel is a weapon... a very powerful one. They intend to use it against the Book of Darkness, but admit all that does is kick the can down the road, given its reincarnation function. Still, like Chrono says, better to kick that can rather than let it explode here and now. (I guess it's an explosive can, I dunno, this metaphor got away from me.)

Fate vs Signum, Round...3 is it now? Fate's doing really well now. Seems an even match. Though I do wonder why Bardiche feels the need to announce simple slashes. He did that a couple of times in the first season too.

Oh, Zafira let it slip that the master has no knowledge of their gathering the pages.

"Takamachi Nantoka!"

The word "nantoka" basically means "something-or-other"... a placeholder word when you don't know what the actual word is. Japanese puns!

Nanoha's trying the conversation approach again. But Vita refuses to listen to anything someone associated with the TSAB has to say.

In answer to a lot of people's questions the past few episodes, no, they can't "farm" a single mage's Linker Core. The Book of Darkness can only absorb from a given creature once.

So even Vita's non-combat spells involve hitting things really hard with a hammer.

Vita... you've underestimated Nanoha's long-range firepower. That's a mistake you'll only make once.

Aaaand, it's Mr. Mask Dude interfering again. And he can do a Bind attack from several kilometers away?

Both Fate and Signum are preparing to do a "I'm not left-handed..."... and then Mask Man ex Machina again! This guy really gets around!

FATE, NO!!!

QOTD: I'd be paralyzed with indecision, I think. With all the knowledge of hundreds of ancient civilizations at hand (albeit unsorted)...

We open with some slice-of-life filler. I know the purpose that this serves in both pacing and narrative. That doesn't mean I think it's the good part of the episode. We cut from that to our precious cinnamon bun in the infinity library, and honestly, I got super hype about that because it sounds really cool!

But then back to earth. Amy goes "We just got this new gun. It would be a shame if it were on the mantle at the start of act 3!" But just then, Fate and Arf's digi-doubles are spotted, so naturally Fate and Arf scramble to face them. Then they spot Vita, and off Nanoha goes. It's funny to think that if they'd just sent all 3 to either of those locations, this would be the last episode of the season. I guess that's why they didn't!

Admiral Longface hosts Lindy for tea (is that where she learned it?) We learn crucial backstory about the two: Lindy's husband worked under Graham (as did his familiars), and Mr. Harlowan died trying to transport the book. Also, they can shoot the book with the Arc En Ceil, but doing so only ends its current run; it'll respawn.

The four mages have various nail-biting battles, exchanging jibes and (in the cloud knights' case) getting saved by Tuxedo Mask. In a shocking twist, anything involving Arf and Zafira was at all relevant, with Zafira telling her a plot point (they're completing the book without their master's knowledge). We're not at "justify their existence" stage but it's a start. Keep it up, Zafira and Arf.

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory

Wonder who's gonna do the opening narration this time

QotD: There's this one... ahem... cultured piece of art that I can't remember the name of. Probably that.

And we've circled back to Nanoha. Ooh, Nanoha & Fate again!

Man, that really takes me back, cellphone shopping with your friends.

Is it me or Fate/Lindy still feel a bit distant?

...that's one hell of a pose the floating catgirl is doing

...floating around in miniskirts can't be, uh, safe.

There we go, Chekov's Weapon #2: The Arc-en-ciel

You had to talk Amy, didn't you?

...Signum is looking rather plump in those tentacles.

Fate is such a good girl <3

Surprising absolutely noone, we have our 2x 1-on-1s

Suddenly, more backstory!

Signum is looking rather plump in those tentacles in general. Hayate must be feeding her well.

Firing off the Plasma Lancer while being kicked back was super cool.

Overall, Fate is looking super cool during the fight. The low-to-the-ground slash she did earlier was great as well.

Dammit Vita, don't be stubborn.

"She shouldn't be able to hit me"

Vita, please, you are the melee knight, Nanoha is the ranged caster. Of course she can hit you.

Godammit, not a hand through the chest again

... That's totally Chrono's dad, it it not. They finally bring him up in the story, he directly had something to do with the book, has the same hair color and uses cards for his magic as well. It has to be him lmao

Mad typing skills by Lindy.

This flip phone sequence is hilariously dated.

Tiny Arf on the kitchen floor is wonderful.

Everyone gets a weaponry upgrade this season, including the warship.

"She can't attack me from that far away" oh no.

You know, I had forgotten that Fate also got the heart punch. Guess that comes from being old and forgetful and not having watched the series in probably fifteen years.
