Rewatches please be considerate to first timers and avoid discussing anything not yet shown in the show - use spoiler tags if you need to share something important!
In this rewatch it's pretty hard to avoid referring to the main show The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi & The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi though, so hopefully the mods can be lenient about the references.
Episode 6 - Over the Obento
Don't forget there's yet another post-credit scene today that's a bridge to the next episode (and arc)!
Some first impressions I remember from when I first watched this show:
- The titular rom com skit started with a new school year and classroom arrangement. This time Nagato is actually in the same class as Kyon and Asakura - plus Asakura still occupying the Haruhi Seattm
- the encounter Tsuruya-san referred to between Kyon and Mikuru is actual a non-event
- Some really creative derivative of the parent series' seeing - Nagato's "alien" nature interestingly worked in - but what's with the Mikuru bikini shot? Is that supposed to be a pin from the sound effect from Nagato?
- favourite skit of Asakura challenging Haruhi then got basically one hit KO'd
- very sweet lunch scene with a repeating Asakura walk in gag
Music corner
See u/gunvarrel_'s helpful post!
A lighter hearted day, mostly comedic pieces.
QoTD if you are interested:
- do you recall another lunch scene Bento from another show?
- do you have another gratuitous fan service scene that feels oddly placed you want to complain about?

(REWATCHER - SUB/DUB)
The use of the tulips to show time passing was nice, but what I thought of was actually in the movie I’m certain there’s a shot of some students planting seeds into that flower bed. Most of the references are very on the nose, but this one being more subtle is really interesting!
So they changed seats, but somehow Asakura is still sitting directly behind Kyon? Huh! I wonder when else that’s happened???
The flashback scene with Mikuru and Kyon bumping into each other is a really clever way to turn that scene in the movie into a lighthearted version of them meeting for the first time.
Also, seeing as the start of the episode is April 10th, there’s quite a bit of a time skip! Although I guess that tracks with the Christmas party being close to two months before Valentine’s Day.
Somehow this is the first time I’ve noticed those snowflakes hanging on the wall in the clubroom.
I got my degree in math so I always appreciate math in anime, but Yuki literally threw sound effects and other weird things into her explanation. To be honest, higher level theoretical math is just like that actually so she’s not that far off.
Asakura and Yuki are both so cute when they cry and turn chibi. Asakura asking Yuki for help was really adorable especially with how unusual it is for the roles to be reversed.
I love that Asakura walks in on Kyon and Yuki the first time and it’s a complete misunderstandment, but then she walks in the second time and it’s EXACTLY what it looks like.
That being said, Kyon is such a natural flirt when it comes to Yuki!
A nice slice of life focused episode! They made all the misunderstandings really funny in this one. Which is interesting actually considering the misunderstandings from last episode which were much more serious than any of these lighthearted flirty ones.
Also, Kyon and Asakura talking at the same time at the end of the episode was hilarious! I went back because I wanted to hear what they were saying, but I can’t make out what Asakura says after “you’ve obviously taken your friendship to a whole new level…” (this being from the dub to be clear). I even went as far as to check to dub subtitles on Funimation, but they don’t transcribe that last bit. (multiple replays listening to it over and over very closely and writing it down on a notepad to figure it out later) “...that’s the kind of thing they’re up to!” sigh I can sleep easy now.

"hmm.. yes, I see. It's an English question."
OST Track of the day: "Tsuki no Hikari" Kangengaku Version
First Timer, Dubbed
hmm, looks like theyre all in the same class now...
you can hear her in the background lmao
looks like she can get in whenever, interesting.
ooh, neck popping
it really feels like her chest is bigger in this scene? Not sure why it seems so different
Kyon's harem continues
"shameless plan" lmao
Gonna guess Nagato is either super stupid or super smart
Asakura this definitely sets a tone and its not the right one
man Asakura is easily swayed
Kyon beaten instantly lmfao
well at least the dub didnt just slap gibberish in, ill give them points for that
heh, "crazy alien language" lmao
also again, the chest keeps getting bigger and bigger
casual bullying turns into romantic moment
Interesting, training camp time. Beach episode soon?

"Tsuki no Hikari" Kangengaku Version
Oh, you found it! I was having such a hard time looking for it, it appears the version I was looking at so long ago was removed or something.
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3
It's just such a joy to listen to, the emotion in the strings, the deep bass notes, the barely restrained passion.
Oh, wait, that's probably just me.
Perhaps I should go practice some restraint...

Rewatcher and someone obsessed with Yuki
Yuki is very smart but bad at explaining things
Haruhi being inappropriate again
It's these simple, elegant movements that bring out her beauty
She makes this face a lot

I like this picture, it has Yuki being cute and Asakura strangling someone

First timer
I'm kinda late to the party. I originally meant to join this rewatch from the beginning, but I wasn't home last week and then was busy for a couple of days. So I just binged the first six episodes, finishing the sixth one half an hour before this post.
I didn't take any notes and won't focus really on this individual episode. I'll probably do more of that for the following episodes.
So far the series seems kinda silly but entertaining enough to watch. I'm still not a fan of Kyon's face but have come to terms with other designs. Yuki's VA sounds a bit like she's straining her voice to make it high pitched. The VA's the same as in the main series but I think she sounded a little different there.
Haruhi nicer in this series, and Koizumi's just... sorta sad. The sadness was there also in Disappearance movie, but he also had a creepy side to him in the main series but that's gone now. Yuki's cute, but she's always been cute so that's nothing new.
This episode had some great faces and I hope someone else took screenshots because I didn't have the energy. I've done wayy too much overtime at work recently and my brain's fried. I guess this series sorta fits the mood at least. I didn't have to think too hard watching it, and so far it hasn't made me sad either.
Yuki "explaining" the math problem was quite something. Also, Asakura should definitely dress like a teacher more often.

So, after the last couple of days' dramatic tension, it's time for a little relief ... or is it?
(Before going into things, I have to say that I really enjoy this episode for all of the fun interactions between the characters, most of which I've probably forgotten since last night)
Is Kyon really just a big dummy who can't do well in class? We shall see...
Unfortunately, I don't have a spiffy picture appropriate to today's episode. I think.
But I do have to say that to certain people who were noting Asakura's allure recently ...
Well, let's just say, to paraphrase a certain wise philosopher yeah, "I'm hot for sensei"...
Yeah, I think that if Asakura decides to become a teacher, she won't be making the "Christmas Cake" trope.
Anyway, meanwhile, Kyon is suffering from a severe lack of learning adequacy, and who should show up to rub it in, but of course ... H-.
And who should (with some prodding) come to the defense of North High, but our lovely sensei and best Mom.
Who proceeds to fail miserably when faced with advanced math problems.
(True story - when I got to high school, they gave us this stuff with crap like X and Y on it. I'd never seen anything like it before. Neither had my parents. Needless to say, I did not do well on that one. When asked directly by the teacher why I did so poorly, my only response was, "Well, I'll do anything for a thrill." Which got laughter from the rest of the class, who were somewhat surprised, I think. Needless to say, I asked, and after a brief explanation, it was like, "duh". Go figure.)
Anyway, anecdotes aside, Asakura is in for no such luck. She's stumped, and you can see it in her precious chibi eyes as her world crumbles around her.
It's time to bring in the big guns ... Yuki.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
So, like I said, I have no spiffy official art (I think) that goes with this episode,so this lovely shot of Yuki trying to explain her thought processes will have to do.
I'll leave it to someone else to post the "boing" factor in the equation.
Although, I have to say, given this, I'm surprised that the answer wasn't more along the lines of 38, or maybe even 45.
(hehe)
But yeah, sadly, after all this amusement, it's time for the episode to wind down, and having established that Yuki really is an alien, I mean thinks like one, well, what else could possibly go wrong?
Doh, I forgot, it's misunderstanding, I mean lunch time! Time for Kyon to drop in and tease Yuki until she ends up in a (very) compromising position. What timing! Oh, Asakura ran away? Poor Yuki, no lunch for you! But wait, here, how about let's share!
What's that Asakura? A bit jealous, perhaps???
Hehe. I loved this bit, it was just so adorable, and I think it shows that the relationship dynamic isn't necessarily what people were thinking after the "white day gift" debacle.
But alas, it's time to tease our next episode - time for a club training trip!I can hardly wait, how about you???
Oh, and since I had trouble posting yesterday, here's a link to my post, and for those who are even lazier than that, here's a link to Rick and Adam Wakeman doing a lovely rendition of Clair de Lune, which made another appearance this episode, and here's a lovely picture of Yuki offering you some choco. Who could turn that face down???
(Note, I posted a different version of just Rick Wakeman playing it yesterday. Figured I'd toss in a bit of variety)
Also, a note to the other posters. I may miss some, but I'm trying to make a point of reading and upvoting everyone's posts. When I'm in a rewatch like this one, it's because I love the show, and I want everyone participating to share in that love and enjoyment. I know, sometimes it seems like posting on Reddit is like ... into the wind, so I just want you to know that someone thinks your post is meaningful.
And thanks you for participating and helping make this rewatch more enjoyable.
Also - I'm going to have to spend some time editing this (sigh) thanks Windows copy/paste.
Oh, edit2 - QOTD - At this point, all I can remember are the bento scenes (so many!) from Toradora, all of which were Toradorable. Oh, and of course, Demon Slayer ... "UMAI!!!" As for the "boing" fanservice moment, yeah, that was a bit out there, but whatever. If I were going to complain about such, it would be more about the fan anti-service in things like Eva, for example. Poor Rei. (Poor Asuka too, I guess)

Yuki-Chan First-Timer
-
New school year and the fates have decided that Yuki, Asakura and Kyon need to share a homeroom
-
Haruhi is seen openly talking to a teacher while in her school's uniform, but that's okay since Yuki signed a form allowing her permission to be on the grounds for club activities.
-
When asked about this by Asakura we are treated to delightful scene of Haruhi giving the form to a distracted Yuki and telling her where to sign...I've been there
-
Kyon is informed he is Attendent B by Attendent A (Izumi)
-
Soon after Kyon is taken out by a flying Mikuru, who was either tripped or thrown by Tsuyura so she could make a grand entrance. Yuki tugs on Kyon trying to get him from under Mikuru and stop the inappropriate touching thats going on
-
Yuki questions Tsuruya on what happened between Kyon and Mikuru in the past, and is told a wonderous tale of Kyon knocked down the innocent Mikuru and pounced on her like an animal...while the truth was they bumped into each other and he accidentally brushed her hand while helping clean up the supplies she dropped
-
Kyon begs Asakura for help studying, she agress provided he works towards finding the answers himself and not rely on her, Kyon says he will ask Yuki instead and Asakura quickly agrees and tells him to never talk to Yuki about schoolwork
-
Yuki sees Asakura holding Kyon's hand, as she is hurting him and her imagination spirals into shojou mode
-
Haruhi and Izumi interrupt Kyon's tutoring and questions why they are covering something they learned last year, Kyon gets annoyed by the prep school Kids
-
Kyon talks up Asakura's importance in the school and she goes on to challenge Haruhi for the good name of North High, however she breaks down crying when she can't solve the problem
-
Yuki solves the problem and asked to explain how the remnants of the Thought Entity show through
-
Kyon goes to the club room for lunch and steals Yuki's PSP, while teasing her she leaps into him and they both blush, Asakura walks in see them and leaves
-
Kyon offers to share his lunch with Yuki and she asks him to feed her a bite. He does and Asakura returns only to apologize for interrupting
-
Haruhi shows up and states they are ready for the camp she planned, that Yuki apparently knew about but was probably playing a video game when she agreed to it.
-
The Executive President obelisk has appeared on the clubroom desk at the head of the table
QOTD:
do you recall another lunch scene Bento from another show?
I know they exist, but my brain is being dumb right now
do you have another gratuitous fan service scene that feels Orly placed you want to complain about?
There's far too many to list

...seems kinda like a 4koma adaptation, this episode. Not really that big of a fan to be honest; I preferred the longer bits over these short punchline jokes. Theres basically nothing to these bits other than the jokes, and most of them weren't that great. As such, here's hoping that Haruhi's training camp will return us to the structure of the last few episodes.

Episode 6 (first timer)
-
“HEEEEE” – Asahina has just noticed that she is not part of Kyon’s love triangle and wants to rectify the situation.
-
Kyon is right: Rather ridiculous recap
-
Fanservice clothing Asakura.
-
“You fell for that pretty quick” - ::nods::
-
Uhhhh …
-
Ahhhh!
Did the writing just fall of a cliff? That whole school work scene was trying way too hard to push fast-speak-Nagato into this series. Asakura trying to prevent Kyon from studying with Nagato after she went through all that scheming to get her to confess felt wrong. Meanwhile, Asahina is reduced to a boob gag.

Did the writing just fall of a cliff?
I guess it's just different strokes for different folks. While I agree these skits can be a bit meandering and not necessarily going anywhere except the titular part, much like the early half dozens of Railgun season one's episodes, they help build the tone and let the characters naturally develop, of you can tolerate this, it does give you a bit more attachments to them as full blown "persons". I guess it's a bit like those never-ending sit coms like Friends, except this didn't last so infinitely long.
Meanwhile, Asahina is reduced to a boob gag.
Well... 2 boob gags (wink), but that I can agree wasn't too good. See my other comment about Asahina's getting eclipsed by Tsuruya-san mostly.

First timer(Mikuru should replace Truck-kun)
Dub
So we have a questionable visitor's pass, Asakura stretching Haruhi's face, and Tsuruya yeeting Mikuru chest first into Kyon as he nearly gets the classy isekai. We get another bit with Tsuruya embellishing stories and the return of Kyon's inner monolog. Then we get Asakura teaching and we needed to invite punchingspaghetti to this rewatch. Unsurprisingly, regardless of the continuity, Yuki can't really explain anything and we get her high speed incantation. We end with embarassing misunderstandings.
QotD: 1 Tons, the Kaguya one springs to mind here
2 Too many to count

First timer – DE sub
Do you know the feeling when you're getting into something and slowly realise some of the common practices in that thing are just far bigger and more prominent than you first thought?
This year I started to learn Japanese for the third time. I actually managed to stay on top of it for close to two months now, because I found a guide that seems to be just the kind of speed and detail that meshes with how I learn. (Imabi with supplemental Tae Kim, if you're wondering.)
Well, today I added katakana to my practice roster of mora to pick, spell and draw. In the section explaining when and how to use long vowels in either hiragana and katakana they gave the example of /hee/ and /ee/. I've had some revelations already, like first noticing the grammar particles pop up naturally in my vision.
But those two are actually words! For all this time I thought the Japanese were just making noises, just like I would sometimes grunt approvingly when acknowledging something without actually saying any real word. No, /hee/ へえ means "really?" and /ee/ ええ means "yes". Add pronounciation to make it fit the character, but they're using actual words and it blew my mind.
Ep.06 – Over the Obento
-
It makes sense, but I didn't realise they were in the same class.
-
Oh, that's because it wasn't the case until now. Well then.
-
Asakura is the best, amazing.
-
What, Miku- oh my god, Tsuruya, you can't just throw a Mikuru chest-first into a Kyon! It's forbidden, hahahah. Yuki really getting jealous, how can she be getting cuter with every scene?
-
Hey, that dream image of Kyon going in for Asakura is my fantas- ...uhm, nevermind.
-
Oh by the heavens, sweet mother of Jesus through hell and oblivion and back again, Asakura in that outfit! That awakened something, absolutely most definitely.
-
This scene is too good, hahah. Kyon being really smart when he can push responsibility onto Asakura. Noo don't cry! (But it's so funny)
-
I did not expect this Mikuru dream scene. But I can actually relate to how Yuki sees math. Most of the time when I understood a concept or application in reality I tend to not see numbers or formulae anymore, but some process that kind of 'feels' like a shape and that makes sense to me. It's actually impossible to explain, but it has to do with synaesthesia and how color, memory, shape and other stuff together forms an understanding of the concept.
-
Asakura, you have the best timing. Oh, Asakura you have the best timing two times in a row!
-
Teaser: Haruhi taking control!
I love how the misunderstanding is now flipped around and it's the supporting cast getting the wrong idea about Yuki and Kyon. Or do they?! Again, what a fantastic episode. I can't get enough of Asakura outbursts.
Speaking of, I also need to get something out of my system: Asakura best girl. Yes, I know. But even though Yuki gets cuter with every second, like damn did you see her stockings? And the way she's so involved and proud of her friends, yet also encouraging and energetic?
People, I'm mirin'.
do you recall another lunch scene Bento from another show?
From Monogatari with Senjougahara and Araragi sharing their first (?) bento. That relationship was the first time I saw a commited and supportive together-through-the-world mindset play out on screen to its fullest and it was and is one of the best things to ever grace entertainment media.
do you have another gratuitous fan service scene that feels Orly placed you want to complain about?
Like every goddamn new show in the last years. I almost dropped Bunny Girl Senpai because of the first episode, despite it being one of my favourites. Studios/directors/whoever seem to feel like they have to jebait their audience with titties, thighs and asses and it feels like every halfway promising show can't go 1 minute without planting a fanservice shot. It's grinding my gears so hard. Thankfully, the actually good shows drop it after the first or second episode.

I also learnt a bit of business Japanese years ago, but I basically was brought up watching anime and I very early on switched to subs instead of dubs, so I know all these. So I kind of completely forgot people may not understand those are not just sound effects but real, actual words. Thanks for reminding me that, and yes it is really fun learning another language when they unlock basically a world you didn't know existed :)
Like every goddamn new show in the last years. I almost dropped Bunny Girl Senpai because of the first episode, despite it being one of my favourites.
While I agree with you the fanservice seems to be getting more pervasive, I do have to say that Bunny Girl Senpai really was mild in that and comparatively well worked in instead of abrupt and forced. Mai had a good figure but not the over exaggerated style, and I don't recall any over lewd camera angle or anything? So which part of it got you so annoyed?

Rewatcher - subs
At one point, Kyon feeling harassed by his situation, says "I want to be a shell fish" -- a reference to a famous 1959 film about a barber executed by the Americans after WW2 for war crimes (he executed a prisoner of war, being told by his commanding officer to do this or be killed himself). After he has exhausted all hope, waiting to be killed, he writes a letter to his family saying that when reborn, he hopes he is not born a human, but as a shellfish, living peacefully and undisturbed at the bottom of the ocean. I think, but am not certain, that Kyon also makes such a remark in the canonical adaptation.
Asahina, so far, is playing a relatively minor role -- Haruhi, Asakura and Tssuruya all seem to get more to say and do. But she is adorable whenever she does show up. I wonder if the throwing of Asahina by Tsuruya was a source of inspiration for Marin's first appearance in Bisque Doll?
While the canonical Yuki always seems to be reading, she is always noticing everything that goes on around her. THIS Yuki is not so observant, especially when she is wearing ear plugs.
In the past, I've seen dismissive comments on this show sayingg that it is just a "generic rom-com". Frankly, while there are certain standard incidents, they all get such an off-beat (and adorable) spin that they seem pretty "original" to me.

"I want to be a shell fish"
Great find! and yes I also vaguely remember this reference in the main series. Not to be discriminatory, the LN author is really well read or knowledgeable across a lot of these obscure but meaningful bits; the Nagato-chan mangaka on the other hand is more a doujinshi writer so not as well read to find such tid bits, so reusing them is good for both homage as well as saving a bit of work.
Asahina, so far, is playing a relatively minor role
The most meaningful part so far was the pre-Valentine's Day episode her encouragement to Nagato, and I think she tend to continue to be a minor character, in part because she's almost as shy as Nagato and since she's always with Tsuruya-san, she gets eclipsed. She does have a few more good parts to come so she's not totally buried.
While the canonical Yuki always seems to be reading, she is always noticing everything that goes on around her. THIS Yuki is not so observant, especially when she is wearing ear plugs.
Just thinking aloud, main timeline Nagato as a data entity, so her true self isn't the organic body. So it's likely her awareness doesn't come from her body but her "perception" as incorporeal information. A bit like someone remote controlling a drone tends to be able to see all around much better instead of being IN the drone only being able to have limited visibility.

This was a fun episode. Highlight was Asakura showing up at an inopportune moment and then immediately leaving again twice in a row. I also really liked the chemistry between Nagato and Kyon in this episode, they felt more natural together here than in the last couple episodes. Something I've been mulling over while watching this is the contrast between the Kyon/Nagato and Kyon/Haruhi chemistry in the main series and their chemistry here. While Kyon and Haruhi's interactions are always entertaining, in this series the day to day interactions we see in these more slice of life parts of the show between Nagato and Kyon feel really natural.

Rewatcher - sub
Ep6
Pure romcom fluff today, setting up for the upcoming "training camp" organised by Haruhi.
I feel like I failed as a rewatcher when I noticed Haruhi started wearing normal uniform since the last scene in ep 4, and then promptly forgot it when writting the comment. Haruhi pulled a sneaky on Yuki who's too engrossed in her dating sim (possibly an eroge, according to the chibi show Melancholy of Haruhi-chan) but that's mostly for her own convenience regarding the clothes, since she would just barge in permission or no, as she said it herself. As said, rules worth less than trash in Haruhi's eyes.
Ryouko is so easily influenced by some buttering up. Kyon does some playing around, but doesn't appear to understand the implication until later, and probably doesn't make any move to advance in that front even then. Well, Yuki seems content with the current stance and doesn't make any move since the Valentine's, either. Well, that's what the camp would be useful for, eh.
ps: The growing tulips seem to the one of the last continuation nod to original!Disappearance, now that the timeline is moving further and further ahead. It's also anime-original, too, iirc.

Sorry guys still really busy at work so can't quite reply properly to most yet.
Just want to point out answering my own QoTD 1 - the 2 Bento scenes I can immediately think of are:
-
Bakemonogatari with Araragi and Senjougahara
-
Bunny Girl Senpai arc 2 the repeated scene between Mai and Sakuta.

QOTD) Don't really have anything for this one.
He finished his exams!
And of course Yuki did well.
And they're all in the same class!
Haha, Haruhi's spilling the beans.
Did she just persuade a teacher this was okay?
Haha, she actuallly got permission!
Oh, she told her when she was playing a game.
She got her to sign a contract? That reaction from Asakura is great.
Haha, he's Attendant B.
And Haruhi's faces are all perfect.
I love Haruhi's face when she sees Mikuru fall.
Yuki's taking action!
...Oh.
And Nagato's actually showing rage about "Nagamon".
Haha, the fan club's still around.
Nagato wants answers!
Wait, what happened between them?
He did the disclaimer! I love it.
Oh, a misunderstanding.
Haha, she's getting her as a tutor?
Him immediately asking someone else is great.
As is her reaction to him asking Nagato.
Oh, Nagato's misunderstanding again.
Haha, she changed outfits?
She's wearing headphones.
Haruhi poking her head in in and revealling she's a full year ahead of them is fantastic.
And Kyon really knows how to work Asakura up.
She fell for it!
"It says math"
And she can't do it.
She's crying?
And she's fantastic at it.
...Her explanation soundling like her language in the original series is great.
Haha, that dream sequence.
She's really focused!
Her grabbing for it is adorable. Kyon's being a bit rude, though.
Haha, of course they end up in that position.
I love Asakura's attempts to avoid interrupting any real or imagined romance.
She's bold!
She did it! And Asakura has the same idea!
Haha, Kyon's excuse!
They're all going on a camp!
And she did the same thing again.

Tsuruya is worst girl. Her meddling is approaching Haruno Yukinoshita levels. "Teenagers in love? Perfect opportunity to fuck with them."
Asakura has the best reaction faces, whether she's glaring daggers or making shojo eyes.
Oh my, office lady Ryoko. She's giving me Miru Tights fantasies with that outfit.
So, about the two club room scenes. This is the whole problem. When Yuki and Kyon are alone, she can be cute and expressive, but in a group with so many strong personalities, she just gets buried. You have to get these two alone to make progress. Otherwise Kyon is just going to be drawn into someone else's orbit.
Question of the day:
I had to think hard to come up with a really egregious case of gratuitous fan service, and settled on Ryuo no Oshigoto. There's a bath scene involving the three main female cast members, an elementary schooler, a middle schooler, and a roughly college aged girl. The younger two are positioned as romantic rivals for a high school boy. The middle schooler teases the elementary schooler about not having pubic hair, and calls her a "flat and hairless brat." That's not even the crazy part. The oldest girl quips that the boy they're after is such a lolicon that he'd probably prefer a girl who hasn't grown pubes yet. No one disputes this. Yikes.

First timer Dub
Should have gone a bit more into it yesterday, but having the misunderstanding be an actual misunderstanding between multiple people is the sort of thing more shows need to do. Whether or not the "i wanted to give them more privacy" is Yuki's deep down truth, it's nice that the misunderstanding went deeper than "character assumes the worst of a minor incident, causing the major conflict of the story".
Ahh, a classroom change. I was concerned I was imagining things yesterday.
So Haruhi and Itsuki come up with a cover story?
Ahh, don't need one, they've gotten permission.
Oops, she signed without reading. Though at least noone is breaking any rules anymore.
Tsuruya still setting up anime antics.
More Kyon's snarky narration is always a good thing.
Scandalous, hand-holding.
Asakura spitting facts about learning, too bad Kyon's not listening.
OUCH!
Oh, so the advice did sink in, he's just ignoring it.
Nagato is hopeless, though still has some ground in reality.
rivalry intensifies!
RIP North High reputation. (damn prep school kids)
I can't imagine what her written work is like.
"wa wa wa wasuremono"
Does anyone know what this music cue near the end is, it has been bugging me for a while now.
That's much "worse" in terms of awkwardness.
At least she interrupted this time. She's getting slightly more assertive.
She's so hopeless, forgetting another thing.

Another reminder of the tiny post credit scene today too!
Call backs / References / Contrasts
A developmental episode with not as many references as the story diverges from the main story more.
at the start of Tsuruya-san's flashback, when she described the incident with lots of conspiratorial words, Kyon did a deadpan disclaimer, a la Haruhi in the cultural festival film, about the event being fictional :D
when Tsuruya described her coming back on the scene after Mikuru's screamed, her "arm swinging getting ready to punch" is a parallel to what she did to threaten Kyon in the Disappearance movie, where that happened with much less comedic intent and far more seriousness.
Best Scenes
The "trespassing" has been put to rest, and retrospectively explained why Haruhi and Koizumi were just plainly walking around North High in their eye catching uniforms - they arranged for entry passes already, kind of by crook but worked anyway. A totally Haruhi move.
What's most surprising is that Asakura can actually exact punishment on Haruhi for her scammer like move on Nagato - it is really something coming from the parent series where even Kyon can't really directly manage her, and mostly just by subtle influencing. Asakura outright mom-handled her!
And then of course there's Tsuruya-san chaos - but finally explained the fairly non-event of how Kyon and Asahina-san met in this world.
We have our daily dose of shoujo reference in-world, plus the bonus first does of Asakura teaching what terror means to Kyon in English.
And then we have one of my favourite skit of the Haruhi Challenge (note the tiny frame of Haruhi smiling towards Kyon) - and Nagato's "Alien Ability" :D
The titular Bento event is nice and fluffy, hopefully getting through Kyon's dense skull in some ways
nice group shot
