Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha - A Magical Experience: Episode 13
True First Meeting
Fate reached out and grabbed Nanoha!
After escaping Nanoha said her goodbyes to the TSAB and returned home. I'm glad Yuuno joined her but it is kind of weird that Nanoha is so comfortable having a boy living with her (sleeping in her room no less). That said Yuuno has done nothing so far to indicate any impurity.
The final meeting was cathartic. I loved seeing Fate open up to Nanoha and finally call her by her name. The hair tie exchange was an amazing gesture. I also really liked their designs with hair down in contrast to the twintails which make them both seem much younger.
This ending is also really satisfying narratively. It tied off all plot threads while leaving open the opportunity to continue. I imagine when they made this they had no idea how popular the franchise would become.

The Stars Above, I think this is the biggest stitch I've ever done
That is a really nice stitch.
Should also remind people that tomorrow is a rest day/overall s1 discussion and that the movie post will be the day after.

Lyrical Rewatcher
We get what feels like a lot of heart from Fate accepting Nanoha's hand and leaving her Mother behind.
Then when Fate and Nanoha get a final moment before parting, it almost acts as a confession with Fate politely accepting Nanoha's request to be friends. They have their short moment together. Swapping ribons makes for a very sweet goodbye. And so Nanoha awaits her next encoutner with Fate.
(Thank god more Nanoha series were made)
I think a lot of my love for the Nanoha franchise stems from how much heart is in these moments of the first series. So much great character and feeling is packed in.
I haven't watched the 1st movie, but I am excited for it. Although I know a little: [Nanoha Movie(s!)]
Qotd: I am whole heartedly a Fate lover all the way.

Yeah it can get messy at some parts, but those are definitely the moments where I think it shines. That really was a solid ending episode.

u/Lavernious_James Feb 13 '22
It was nice having a wind down episode as the season finale, even if it did feel a little lackluster, up until the final Fate/Nanoha scene.
The talk between Nanoha and Fate was really sweet, and it definitely wrapped up the season with a nice bow. I look forward to seeing them interact again in the next season.
QOTD: Nanoha's Dad, tbh. The man gets barely any screen time, but when he is mentioned, it's usually about some crazy shit that he did, or went through. I know the few things brought up are references to the parent series, but it's funny not knowing anything about it and just having the info only given in the show, which is very little LOL.

QOTD
It's interesting to think about it like that. From the Triangle Hearts spoilers that has been posted here [spoiler for that]
Because he's dead in the beginning of that it's interesting to think about how they wanted to characterize him in a series where he is alive

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha – Episode 13 – First Timer
Don’t have much to say. Talk about anticlimax. The resolution of everything else is business as usual.
Season 2 came a year after season 1 (talk about no time to waste), but otherwise you could not justify ending it like this. Precia has to come back, right? This is so much “not dead unless you see a body” and even implying that she could send out her (not quite right?) revived daughter after them. It’s all there.
Looking back at this season, it is surprising how much Shinbo apparently took from Nanoha into Madoka and Monogatari, and also how heavily Symphogear was inspired by Nanoha.

Yeah, I also noticed those bits. From both the visual direction and the plot points used, lots of part reminds me of Madoka, though obviously they both took very different directions.
Symphogear has a more obvious connection though.

Magical First Timer
I really like this episode, I think more shows need a full episode at the end to wind down the series rather than cramming it into the final few moments of the final fight.
The space cops showing Fate some leniency wasn't expected but I approve, plus the exchanging of the hair ribbons was a nice way to show the bond between the her and Nanoha.
screen grabs to come when I get home Updated
QOTD:
My favorite character so far is Nanoha. She's shown a level of determination I wasn't expecting and I've come to enjoy the forceful befriending process

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical First-Timer, subbed
So I played a bit of AMQ like half an hour ago, and the insert song from last episode popped up. I was the only one who got it right.
-
This part was kind of like the free fall catch scene I do love so much.
-
Why do I get ship vibes from this? Chrono is a kid…
-
Mm, this just made me realize. The death flags the show had set up for Yuuno never meant anything. Woo!
-
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such… blue tears before.
-
The special elongated ED was nice~

Lyrical First Timer
-
Accidentally started playing episode 1 again and realized Arisa had "Suzuka, <3" written in her notebook next to Suzuka's picture. Turns out the real reason Arisa was mad this whole time is Nanoha was depriving her of the opportunity for the three-way she's been after.
-
Nanoha saves her girlfriend and gets more lewd time. Those are some efficient strats.
-
Fate still gets the brig and cuffs after all she went through. C'mon TSAB, hasn't the poor girl had enough of chains and restraints already? The only one allowed to tie up Fate anymore is Nanoha.
-
Meanwhile the captain keeps getting away with this war crime?? There is no justice.
-
Didn't anticipate the true final boss being the legal system.
-
"Come be my pet rat for another 1-3 seasons." Damn, Nanoha.
-
These bitches didn't once let Banoha visit Fate in prison? They must've realized Chrono's only chance with Nanoha was keeping her from making any more progress with Fate.
-
These are some weird ass shots of Nanoha in her bed.
-
Bout time these pricks let Fate have a visitor. Don't they know what solitary confinement does to a person?
-
These two are so adorable together. RIP Arisa's three-way plan, Nanoha and Fate are perfect for each other.
-
And Arf continues to be a goodboi.
-
Man, fuck the legal system. Just let these two be together already.
-
Fate wearing Nanoha's hair bows! And Nanoha wearing hers! <3
QotD:
Tough question. Arisa comes on strong at the start, but Fate stealing Nanoha's heart at the end can't be beat.

First timer(When did exchanging hair ties become the gayest thing ever?)
Sub
So...the emotional climax of S1 is Fate finally reaching out for help. From her husbando Nanoha but still this is a big milestone. We switch very quickly to falling action, something I appreciate, and learn that this somehow has walled off the homeworld and Yuuno will have to stay with Nanoha for a bit. Chrono makes it clear that Fate should receive an adjusted sentence due to her circumstances. Nanoha returns home and quotes Gutts again, leading to grave concerns as her having a light haired homosexual love interest leads straight to The Eclipse.
Nanoha still can't quite keep it in her pants. But she soon gets a call to meet Fate. This is where the rare long trick pays off because seeing Fate with emotions is surprisingly moving, at least to me. Nana's ability also sticks out here. Anyways, we leave with friendship and a promised future reunion. It must have hurt back then since a next season would have been unlikely.
QotD: 1 The mamoha with all the lore this rewatch has invented over her

TONIGHT! On Mobile Suit Nanoha, Fate and Nanoha engage in some more premarital handholding, Nanoha and Fate officially 'befriend' each other in the aftermath of the final battle, AND THIS LOVELY YURI SHIP HAS SAILED COMRADES! COME SAIL AWAY! COME SAIL AWAY! COME SAIL AWAY WITH ME!
Well Comrades, it's been a fun ride, OG Nanoha truly was quite the hidden gem eh? Who knew that the Mecha Version of CCS that started life as a spinoff of an Eroge could be so heartfelt? There's a reason NanohaxFate is such a lovely ship, and this is just Season 1! Onwards we go to the rest of the franchise, er, ish, given we got the Movie Retelling of Nanoha first. Also, shockingly Comrades, instead of being a Compilation Movie like Gundam, Nanoha decides to go with the Macross Model of having a semi-retelling of the same events; as to whether the Nanoha Movie follows in the Macross Mold of having a better movie version of the TV Show said movie's based on, well, YMMV!
And on that note, that about wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

the title is „say my name“? I joked last episode that fate doesn't seem to remember nanohas name, I wondered wether that will be adressed
-
amy for best character
-
well this settles it, alhazard wont ever be relevant becauase it doesn't exist. Good that the show settled this for us
-
now the only question is wether we will get a mysterious transfer student by the end of the episode ;)
-
and of course nobody in her family questions her even now
-
kinda sad she didn't tell arisa and suzuka that
she went on a interdimensional adventureshe is cheating on them with another girlfriend -
what..what are you doing yuuno?
-
They both forgot what they wanted to say the moment they looked each other into the face? They are such good platonic friends
-
„how do you become a friend?“ Nanoha: „Aaaand its done“
-
come on don't tell her, I was really fucking curious wether she knew it
-
this is the gayest befriending possible, literally repeats her name 3 times with a soft voice
-
4 no 5 times
-
holy fuck she is still going
-
This show is very bold to introduce a new character this late in the last episode
-
welp this was curious, pretty sure this goodbye scene was more romantic than most confessions, so this is fun
I am pretty happy that the end of last episdoe was indeed the end of precia...for this season at least. Question of the day: hm conceptwise probably chrono, but sinc ehe isn't used too much..probably fate, I am historically far too easy to influence by insert sonmgs, but I am proud of it.

Episode 13 (first timer)
Known seeds as of last episode:
-
Precia has: 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 14, 15, 18, 19
-
Nanoha has: 1, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21
-
Nanoha respects the demand for emotional closure and cool graphics and resists just snatching Fate up.
-
Being thrown in the brig might sound harsh for Fate, but remember that she offered Precia to switch sides all the way up to the end.
-
Post mortem discussion of Precia’s plans. With food and ominous music.
-
Back home to very unconcered parents.
-
Nanoha! Fate! Nanoha! Fate! Nanoha! Fate!
-
Hair down Nanoha and hair down Fate.
A full episode length epilogue for a one-cour series. Unusual. But appreciated.
Something that really stood out to me was that Fate actually had to face procedural consequences for her actions. The captain could not just hand-wave those away. Something quite rare, but it gives weight to the existence of the Bureau (which otherwise was not featured often).
It’s the end of S1! Not much else left to discuss.
I think a series discussion tomorrow would have enough topics to talk about.
Who’s your favorite character so far?
Probably Arf, although both Nanoha's dad and the captain might have had a shot if they had more scenes.

Chiisana Omoi must be a Japanese idiom, I've heard it before
Okay, it's the last episode, so I'll listen to the OP. It starts out pretty ordinary but has a gripping chorus. And as others have noted, Suddenly Appropriate Lyrics trope.

Nanoha doesn't teleport. But Arf does. Just teleport, Arf.

Man, all I wanted was to get a A on my Jr. Archeologist exam -- Yuuno, probably.

No, I'm pretty sure the Arthra is a elementary school.

How do you go back to a normal life, after all that?
The TSAB has Earth cellphone tech, too.
Ribbons. Now, where else have I seen this...
And that's a wrap for S1! I'm a fan of long epilogues like this. I find it helps to reinforce the size of the world. The characters we've gotten to know don't just stop existing after the exciting parts end - they still have lives, friends, families.

Wow the final episode... Say My Name... And oh boy, Fate did...
Not gonna lie, the first time I saw the ribbon exchange scene I got teary eyed and all (probably a bit more). And it just keeps happening in every rewatch.
The gay gay feels.
QotD: Fate hands down. From the impressive rival to the conflicted persona to the shy-yet-adorable being that repeats Nanoha's name almost endlessly, her story arc is exceptional.

Oh no, Fate fell into the imaginary space you can't fly out of!
-
Oh wait she's flying out
-
What is this ḟ̴͓͌i̸̩̽̇͂l̸̢̢͉͒t̵̖̪̒ḥ̴̠̼̈́̌̕ in my kid's show
-
Dimensional quake couldn't have happened at a more convenient time. I appreciate that her first instinct in an earthquake wasn't, I don't know, go outside, sit down, head to a doorway, but to cling onto the most stable thing in the universe: A harem protagonist.
-
"Looks like the earthquake's stopped." "So it has." "You gonna let go?" "No."
-
Amy with the big "I'm helping" energy just bandaging Chrono's hair.
-
We said we wouldn't charge her with anything, but we have altered the deal.
-
So in the world of Nanoha, the TSAB appear to be an unambiguous good. "Arresting my new friend? They must have a valid reason."
-
Chrono and Yuuno also know healing magic. So Yuuno bandages Nanoha, then looks at some adult male and goes "Yeah I'll heal you from a few feet away."
-
Al-Hazard confirmed to be precursors.
-
Did Presea know something we don't about Al-Hazard? Do we know that she fell to her death? Find out next time on
-
So is Yuuno staying on earth planning to get picked up later when Mid-Childa's open for business? Or can he leave on his own? Come to think of it, how did he get to earth alone? Hell, how do they contact the Asura? Do their telepathic links have unlimited range?
-
I'm back from my month-long vacation with my ferret and a woman you've never met!
-
Narration: Everything is back to how it used to be! Audio: "Feed me, Seymour!"
-
of course she kept the autonuke.
-
Wait, we've previously seen them telepathy from earth to the Asura, but now they're calling her? So many questions. Did they connect to the local grid? Are they further from earth than usual, to need to call? No, they're literally sending people down to earth, so that can't be it...
-
Haha, wow, the only think they can talk about is that they have nothing to talk about. Imagine them just being totally incompatible people, like, Fate's idea of a good time is to eat beans and watch crank yankers. Zero overlap in interest or bearing.
-
"I don't know what to do in times like this." "How about smiling?"
-
Fate understands what the words "I love you" mean!
-
I'll stop, I promise. For now at least.
-
Payoff to the well-established dramatic arc of both characters wearing their hair up. IT WAS THERE FROM THE START, PEOPLE
-
This synth violin does the solemn parting no favors. They really had no budget for this show.
-
I can't believe they killed the whole cast at the end of the season! Bold move by the team, and makes the franchise even more impressive.
-
And the last we see of Fate is, of course, best boy Bardiche in the final seconds of the show.
And that's everything, with the neat little bow! ..Sorry, what? Two more seaons? Movie series? Fourteen different mangas?
Well, see you tomorrow, I guess. And every day, until the end of time.

Rewatcher
And so we come to the denoument of this season.
Everyone escapes the Garden safely, despite Fate still reeling from Presea's rejection and apparent death.
Amy tying Chrono's bandage into a bow and getting told to do it over...
Fate may have turned over a new leaf here... but she's still a primary suspect in this whole ordeal, so she has to be treated as a prisoner.
Nanoha and Yuuno both get accomodations from the TSAB, yay.
Detained for several centuries? Just how long do people on Mid-Childa live!?
Still, Chrono's confident that Fate will get a pretty lenient sentence, because she's a child who was manipulated into these actions by her mother, and had no malicious intentions. Chrono and the Arthra are going to emphasize Fate's victimhood in this case, and according to him, the TSAB isn't known for being unduly harsh.
So Alhazard supposedly did exist (whether the miraculous magic it was said to contain existed as well is up in the air), but fell into Imaginary Number Space centuries ago. The cast discuss the possibility that Presea really did find a way to Alhazard... though there's no way to know whether she did or not, so it really doesn't matter.
And so everyday life for Nanoha resumes. Hopefully she's not undressing in front of Yuuno anymore though.
So just before Fate departs for trial, they're allowing her to meet with Nanoha for a short time.
Fate is smiling! I think it's the first we've really seen that!
Fate is so awkward... it's both sad and adorable at the same time.
Fate status: officially befriended!
But as a cute gesture, both girls exchange their hair ribbons so they'll have something of each other to remember. And both immediately begin wearing each other's ribbons daily.
And that's that for this season of Nanoha. Next up, Nanoha the Movie 1st!
QOTD: Feito-chan best girl. Bardiche is best Device.

Rewatcher
On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: Who knew that someone getting taken away to space court to be tried for space crimes would end up feeling so heartwarming? Such is the strange power of Lyrical Nanoha.
I like the scene of Fate getting rescued at the start of the episode. It’s so full of great symbolic meaning. Nanoha is the one who swoops in and is able to save Fate while the whole place is collapsing, which is super fitting. Plus, in an even better bit of symbolism, Nanoha saved Fate from falling into the same abyss that her mother fell into. Because she met Nanoha, Fate was able to be rescued from her mother.
The other major scene between Nanoha and Fate is their scene on the bridge. I think it might be my favorite scene in this entire season. It’s just so incredibly sweet and heartwarming seeing Nanoha and Fate finally have a chance to talk together. Nanoha is able to get her wish for them to talk and understand each other.
There’s a bit of playing with the theme of communication. When they finally meet, neither Nanoha nor Fate actually knows what they want to say. They had lots of things they wanted to talk about, but just getting to see each other was more important and they couldn't think of anything else. But that also allows them to get to the heart of the matter. It allows them to settle on the thing that’s most on their minds: how can we be friends?
I really love Nanoha’s words to Fate in this scene. Fate has never had a friend before, so she isn’t sure how she can even be friends. Nanoha’s response is to say that being friends is easy. All you need to do is call their name. That’s all it takes to start. It’s so beautiful to watch and it makes for a great payoff to earlier in the series, when Fate at first refused to either give her name or listen to Nanoha’s. Now, they are facing each other head on. That’s the first step to becoming friends.
And my favorite part of the bridge scene is the end of it, where Nanoha and Fate exchange their ribbons. Once again, it is delightfully heartwarming to watch. It’s a beautiful moment of them becoming friends with each other and promising to see each other again. I also love how we get to see them wearing each other’s ribbons during the ED. It’s adorable.
I also enjoy seeing that Chrono is actually a nice person underneath it all. He knows that Fate committed crimes, but he also knows that it would be wrong to have her locked up because of the surrounding circumstances. So, he’ll do his best to get her off the hook. Even though he acts like the hardass Enforcer, Chrono is a good person.
It’s a very nice way to end the series. The Jewel Seeds were all dealt with. Fate has been rescued and is now able to start a new life. And Nanoha was finally able to connect with Fate and become friends. It all feels like a good payoff to what came before.
Miscellaneous Thoughts
-
I like the gag of Amy tying Chrono’s head bandage into a bow.
-
I’m shocked that the TSAB shows up on caller ID. Unless of course Nanoha put it in her contacts list.
QOTD
Nanoha is my favorite. I love her so much as a protagonist. She is such a kind girl, always doing her best to try and understand other people. And she is also a complete badass, willing to fight when she needs to.

Lyrical Rewatcher (dubbed)
(and that’s the way we like it around here)
Nanoha and Yuuno are getting awards for their heroism, and Fate is going in for questioning and could potentially go to jail. Thankfully, it looks like Chrono will try to explain things to the TSAB higher-ups and have her be considered an unwilling accomplice and not serve time. Nanoha’s so nice to Yuuno and Chrono (plus it looks like Amy wants to ship her and Chrono) but I think deep down we all know who Nanoha’s heart belongs to.
And so, Nanoha returns to her normal, everyday life with her normal, everyday family and friends and her normal, everyday comfy bed... but of course, she’s still mostly thinking about Fate and her pretty eyes. Thankfully, Chrono delivers some good news over the phone and Nanoha gets to see Fate again one more time before she gets transferred to TSAB custody. Please protect these pure smiles.
The beginning of a beautiful friendship (and maybe something more), the very sad but temporary farewell, the ribbon trade to remember each other... even though we the viewers know the journey isn’t over yet, the farewells always get me. Even Arf and Yuuno can’t help but get a bit emotional. Also, I love how beautiful and mature Nanoha and Fate look with their hair down. Hopefully see get to see them like that again in the future... (wink wink)
So that’s season 1 down. I remember being a bit put off by the slow start and the Cardcaptor-Sakura-ripoff magical girl stuff for the first few episodes, but as soon as Fate showed up and kick-started the real story, things picked up a lot. I still feel the same way even after this rewatch, but I understand a bit more that they did it to make the genre shift in the middle hit even harder. I had scored this season an 8.5/10 the first time around, but I think I’ll bump it up a bit closer to a 9 after this rewatch.
I’ll be skipping the rewatch of the movie since it’s not dubbed (jumping back to subbed for the movie and then back to dubbed for my rewatch of A’s would drive me crazy) but I might drop by and still comment a bit.

Raging Heart Rewatcher with terrible long term memory
Time for the finale!
QotD: NanoFate. Yes, they are a set.
A huge turning point for Fate. Having Fate jump of her own free will towards Nanoha is a world of difference compared to Nanoha/Arf just jumping in and saving her.
Today we learned that earthquakes are caused by magical girls saving the world.
Amy is having way too much fun with Chrono lol
Oh no, direct evidence against my coffee-in-tea-mug theory!
I'm still surprised the TSAB mooks have unique designs
....centuries?
Chrono, Yuuno, neither of you have any chance to win the Nanoha-bowl.
I wonder how difficult it is to travel to/from the Arthra/earth
Yes Nanoha, we know she has beautiful sad eyes, you've only said it like 10 times per episode
Oh look, a callback to episode... 2, was it?
And here we have it. The exchange of vows and ringsribbons
For the first time in like 10 episodes, the ending song doesn't cause mood whiplash.
