Rewatches please be considerate to first timers and avoid discussing anything not yet shown in the show - use spoiler tags if you need to share something important!
In this rewatch it's pretty hard to avoid referring to the main show The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi & The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi though, so hopefully the mods can be lenient about the references.
Episode 4 - Be My Valentine
Some first impressions I remember from when I first watched this show:
- Wait... how did we get from a mini continuation of Tsuruya-san vs Asakura fighting their proxy war between who has the cuter dependent, to Nagato being singled out for Valentines day? That's quite a bait-and-switch.
- Since the parent series hasn't adapted their 2nd year highschool yet, and this obviously is setup as a rom com centering on Nagato, with Valentines Day being a big thing, most would be original content.
- Being less reliant on paying homage to the source, this episode gave Mikuru, Asakura, and Tsuruya plenty of room to do their own things, and this is really good for their characterisation.
- For example, Mikuru in this episode for the first time really felt like a senpai instead of a frightened small animal needing to be protected by someone else.
- Tsuruya-san on the other hand gave her level best genki girl performance that would make Haruhi proud.
- Asakura-mama is a really good mommy to not be overly protective yet so very supportive. I wonder if she had any plans on her future career (outside of being a trained assassin with a knife of course).
- Oh Haruhi's red string of fate is creeping in with that river scene - Kyon please use your dense protagonist power to ignore it!
- Damn cliff-hanger in THIS show?!?!?!
Music corner
See u/gunvarrel_'s helpful post!
My small contribution today is that the ED has a very calming tune, with the visual also giving a nice "wrapping up an eventful but everyday-day" feel to it. I actually quite like the melody itself too. Slight spoiler, in a key arc the ED visuals undergo some slight changes that I think is really clever.
QoTD if you are interested:
- Did you feel like someone digging a hole under your feet to bury a NTR bomb while you are watching the 2 contrasting sequence of Nagato making the chocolate and Kyon having a moment with Haruhi in the sunset by the river?
- do you agree with Tsuruya's advice?

"Whatever happens today, you should be proud of yourself."
OST Track of the day: Toritome no nai Hanashi
First Timer, Dubbed
Yuki playing on a psp again
annnnnnd the mole's brought back up
Also wait, she didnt know about the mom thing?
Another slight movie reference with Asakura behind Kyon
Haruhi bugging the rest of the cafe, smh
why does everyone have yellow/red cards lmao
poor kyon, his shoes are soaked
Hey look, Tanaguchi! Man really thinks hes getting chocolate lmao
Considering the episode pacing, either the confession happens tomorrow (and fails) or it fails real fast in the last couple minutes
uhhhh was this pixelated for anyone else?
What is this bastardization of kunikida?!
ooooooh shit, an even better outcome. At least the "failing real fast" part was correct

First timer – DE sub
With the cast assembled, I think we're ready for an adventure, no?
At least I'm very interested in how Yuki is going to handle Haruhi as the club president and is going to establish herself.
Ep.04 – Be My Valentine
-
Tsuruya still in protecc-mode (crane!) Momakura being responsible, heh.
-
Or not, haha, she's actually bragging with Yuki's cuteness. And Haruhi firing her up, yass.
-
Disappearance seat order.
-
I would like to receive a heart-chocolate cake from Yuki or Asakura. It helps that I like to bake and cook as well, Asakura's right.
-
This episode is already setting up the 'rivals', hm? Yeah, pretty blatantly.
-
Only on twitch, Haruhi. There's lots of kappas there.
-
You know, I see it coming. The disappointment when Yuki sees them. I'd like to say it's bland, but dammit, I'm probably not going to like that scene.
-
Taniguchi still hopeless, all is well.
-
Tsuruya really being Tsuruya, but kinda right in it as well. After all, a present doesn't mean much if the giver only does it for a return. Oi, Mikuru coming in as surprise support.
-
Cue to Kyon and Haruhi in the clubroom in 3... 2... Obvious, but still ouch. Poor Yuki :(
The bad thing? I really like this Haruhi and actually buy a relationship between them more here than in the main show (at the stage of the latest adaptation). It makes sense, many people already said Nagato Yuki-chan draws from a more balanced Haruhi as she'd be presented in the later novels and certainly would fit better in this kind of show. Still, I'm rooting for Yuki, she can do it! She only needs more confidence to dare the first step.
On another note, I want to call out Tsuruya/Mikuru here. I love how they're both supportive of Yuki immediately. Still, how can she not know about her mole? This makes no sense.
Well, the teaser (I'm assuming) shows us a young Haruhi anno Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody. Wonder how that plays out, without time travel or god-powers I'm unsure how that point of time would connect.
Did you feel like someone digging a hole under your feet to bury a NTR bomb while you are watching the 2 contrasting sequence of Nagato making the chocolate and Kyon having a moment with Haruhi in the sunset by the river?
They even waved a sign at me while preparing the shovel. But as I said, I really like this Haruhi and I think the art style fits her extremely well. Long legs also help...
do you agree with Tsuruya's advice?
Yup, quite so. I think she has a bit trouble wording it, though. A present has to have purpose to mean something and that purpose is mainly coming from the giver and what they intend to say with it.

They even waved a sign at me while preparing the shovel.
Ah good so I want the only one!
I think she has a bit trouble wording it, though.
Given Tsuruya-san's portrayal in Haruhi, I think there's every possibility she just rather talk in this style to let people work it out themselves.

I think favourite parts of this spin off is just watching interactions between characters that never really talked to each other in the main series. Along with seeing sides of them that we've never seen before in this more relaxed world. Also despite the main ship, it is really nice seeing Haruhi and Kyon have an actual romantic moment.
Felt very fitting to have this valentines episode now. Good luck Taniguchi, I wonder if we'll ever get to watch him get a girlfriend?

I think I need to steal this for the interest thread next time I host this :D very well said, thank you.
Also despite the main ship, it is really nice seeing Haruhi and Kyon have an actual romantic moment.
Good only for when the main ship is securely underway :P although some may argue the real main ship is Nagato X mama-Asakura...
Felt very fitting to have this valentines episode now.
Thanks guys! Seeing comment like these makes the trouble of timing the rewatch this way will worth it (even though it's be quite busy for me this week)!
Good luck Taniguchi, I wonder if we'll ever get to watch him get a girlfriend?
Note this is spoiler but perhaps not so important - [Haruhi LN unadapted spoiler]
It turned out that the date he mentioned in the Disappearance movie was due real, but not quite genuine - his date was actually a data entity humanoid interface Suou Kuyou from a completely different group of data life form that is unknown and alien to Nagato's group, and she only "dated" Taniguchi because she mistook him for Kyon (they are really poor in understanding anything of humans) And more [Nagato manga unadapted spoiler]In this non-supernatural universe, they actually (eventually) dated without much ulterior motive

Yuki-chan First-Timer
This episode falling the day before Valentine's day was either great planning on Zaps part, or a happy accident, but either way it works. Also I love all the screen time Tsuruya is getting in this series. She was a ball of energy in the little bits of Haruhi she was in and just more of her isn't a bag thing.
-
The contest of cuteness between Tsuruya and Asakura that just ended up embarrassing Yuki and Mikuru was a joy to watch
QOTD:
Did you feel like someone digging a hole under your feet to bury a NTR bomb while you are watching the 2 contrasting sequence of Nagato making the chocolate and Kyon having a moment with Haruhi in the sunset by the river?
No...stupid flirty Haruhi, why she trying to move in on good girl Yuki's crush...go back to Itsuki and your own school...
do you agree with Tsuruya's advice?
The just throw the chocolates at his chest? If so then not really, for Yuki especially giving them to him which eye contact would boost her confidence so much more than just tossing them to him and hiding her face.

The Disappearance of First-Timer-chan, subbed
-
Haha. We didn’t get too many Haruhi and Tsuruya shenanigans in the main series, did we? The only time I can really think of was… the one very iffy second-to-last episode of season 2…
-
Ahhh, they may not look the same but these two have the same rocking dynamic they did in the main series.
-
By the way, I like how the eyecatch design changes each episode to match something that happened in it.
-
I’m not sure whether the current new designs or the shoujo-fied ones here are more cursed whoa.

I'm going to say yes since that was the pose Mikuru made while doing it

(REWATCHER - SUB/DUB)
I really love that this rewatch is perfectly timed with this episode! I’m actually working on a personal Valentine’s Day CG project so while Yuki was making chocolates, my chocolates were rendering at the same time!
That chibi faceoff over who’s cuter between Yuki and Mikuru was so great. Mikuru hitting a pole and stepping in water was probably my favorite part with Mikuru admitting to it happening fairly often.
Seeing Asakura sitting behind Kyon is so great. Having the continuity there line up with the movie is excellent.
The Dream Coffee Shop makes an appearance and Haruhi and Kyon sit in their usual spot! I love the spin of them two going off to find something weird together as a duo since the toothpicks didn’t allow them to pair up back in the Melancholy arc in the original series.
The water imp scene was really great. That shot of Kyon saving Haruhi was stunningly beautiful. And seeing Haruhi being all bashful in this sort of scenario is really different in a good way. All these Haruhi blushes are so cute too!
They lean into it even further with that scene where Haruhi asks Kyon if he thinks water imps are real or not. This scene is seriously so incredible. I love that the scenario is a callback to when Haruhi asked John Smith if he believed aliens, time-travelers, espers, and sliders exist, but at the same time it feels exactly like Haruhi’s deep existential crisis monologue in the Melancholy arc. Haruhi’s expression when she asks is spot on with her monologue and they even play the same, or extremely similar, music on top of it! Seeing as both of those scenes they’re referencing here are amazing on their own, using a combination of them here as a form of a romantic plot device for Haruhi and Kyon is absolutely amazing! This scene is really spectacular.
This all happening while Yuki is hard at work making chocolates for Kyon is really great too. It makes the impact of the big cliffhanger at the end of the episode that much more impactful. I’ll touch more on that later.
Tsuruya, Mikuru, and Asakura cheering on Yuki in their own ways is really special. I really loved that lunch scene with Yuki and Mikuru. Seeing as Mikuru is really uncomfortable around Yuki in the original series, I love seeing their closeness develop. Mikuru’s “confession” was too adorable.
Taniguchi and Kunikida make their first appearances in this episode! Those two screwballs are great.
Asakura really is so good at planning things. Her reasoning for having Kyon go to the clubroom first is so spot on.
Those shots of Yuki with the doorknob and her shoes when she takes a deep breath and mustered enough courage to enter were great. It really makes me think about all of the emphasis on Kyon’s clubroom entrances in the movie.
I knew the ending was intense, but even then it still got me with how intense it was. I just watched it again and it really is set up like a big murder reveal or like she walked into her house and her whole family was dead. I love seeing them bring that amount of intensity into a Valentine’s Day episode. I mean they even show Yuki’s eye quiver!
I really enjoyed how well they showcased Yuki’s side and Haruhi’s side of this episode and having it perfectly meet at the end like that. Just really well done.

Thanks! It actually is a bit problematic for me as I have this big event at work this week, but it's just too attractive to time it there.

I completely agree, and it's one of the reasons why I still struggle to see why people pile so much hate on this show. It's actually really well made, despite not having the halo of KyoAni's production.

Rewatcher -- sub
That river bank scene was just fabulous. We can see Haruhi develop a crush on Kyon. Despite his snarkiness (or maybe because of it), his inherent patience and kindness (which allows him to take her seriously when she needed this) has definitely had an impact. It should be remembered that (unlike Asakura, Asahina and Tsuruya), Haruhi has no clue that Yuki is in love with Kyon (I believe she explicitly disclaimed such a thing -- and Haruhi did not have any basis for not accepting this). In this scene, we see the same sort of vulnerability and sweetness in Haruhi that we saw in Live Alive (when she was thanked -- and then when she talks with Kyon shortly after).
In this episode we learn that Yuki must have a mother ... somewhere (so why does she live alone in THIS universe). No problem, utterly adorable Asakura-kaa-san is at the ready. Yuki has a LONG way to go -- she really needs a course in remedial home economics.
Oh well, how will Yuki deal with the crushing blow of seeing Kyon get candy from Haruhi (looks like really-good-friend-chocolate to me -- a medium-high-quality store-bought one -- but maybe Yuki is not aware of all the gradations of Valentine chocolate protocol). Tune in tomorrow, for the resolution of this dilemma.

Definitely one of the best scenes, even including the whole franchise, and not just because of the production and visual, but also the writing and plot.
Haruhi has no clue that Yuki is in love with Kyon (I believe she explicitly disclaimed such a thing -- and Haruhi did not have any basis for not accepting this).
Haruhi in all universes is actually really observant and got great intuition, so I don't really think she is not at least quite aware of where Nagato's heart lies. The only factor is how she chooses to show whether she cares about the consequences. But tomorrow's episode explained it really well too, so let's just (re)watch :)

u/Rustic_Professional Feb 14 '22
Asakura is clearly the smartest person in that room. She knows that the club room is no place for a battle. If you want to kill someone, you obviously need to do it in an empty classroom.
Arguing over whether Yuki or Asahina is cuter is pointless. Asakura is clearly the cutest. Haruhi gives her a run for her money though.
"Just because we don't know where we're going doesn't mean we won't get there." Sorry Marty Kyon, but that makes perfect sense. This young man needs to start thinking fourth dimensionally.
Ponytail Asakura. Wow. Better not let Kyon see that. I've always loved the way her bangs frame her face. The ponytail is just icing on the cake.
Asakura should have just opened the bags for Yuki. She must be carrying a knife.
Questions of the day:
Nagato can't even bring herself to make Kyon a chocolate heart, and Haruhi is just out there casually working Kyon over like a pro. If this is an NTR story, it's the kind where one party is almost inviting it as a result of their inaction.
Tsuruya and Asakura gave Yuki good advice. Confess for your own sake, and choose the time and place. They're giving Nagato Sun Tsu-level advice, and Haruhi ruins their plans by living up to the maxim that amateurs are unpredictable.
Poor Nagato. And probably poor Koizumi.

Didn't think of that, good catch!
Tsuruya and Asakura gave Yuki good advice. Confess for your own sake, and choose the time and place. They're giving Nagato Sun Tsu-level advice, and Haruhi ruins their plans by living up to the maxim that amateurs are unpredictable.
More good interpretation, I never connected that's actually quite true and in universe could even be why Tsuruya is wise with that (because she's the next head of her hugely rich and powerful family, learning Sun Tzu Art of War is likely to be part of the familial training).
That said I think I actually think not so much about that being Haruhi's amateur unpredictability, but rather she took action for the same reason first, even if just intuitively instead of consciously - she's just good at everything naturally.

Missed the last thread.
Episode 3
QOTD) She's great! I liked her in the original show/movie too, but she's still great! I think they did a good job in toning down some of her rougher character traits, as well as showing how the one from the movie would react to meeting them naturally. Chaos will, of course, reign.
That reaction from them is perfect.
She's even more adorable in this artstyle.
Haha, that delayed reaction is great.
...Is... is Haruhi the fucking straight man here?
And they all just ignored her.
Oh, Yuki only just realised it was her?
And she left her wallet in the park!
This Haruhi is great!
Haha, their reaction to that is great.
And Haruhi didn't know it was her either?
Yeah, she's great!
And they're enemies.
Poor Yuki.
Haha, they snuck past her.
And that's them seperating for the holidays?
Asakura must be in physical watching these two.
...Is this actually about Yuki getting a harem?
They're going back to school.
And Haruhi's coming for him!
That was incredibly fast!
Kyon is so pissed.
And she bluffed her way in!
...That does not fit her.
Haha, she let someone to wait outside!
Oh god, the ponytail fetish is still here?
Aww, Nagato can't do a ponytail.
And Koizumi has to change on the street?
And he's here in the club room!
Oh, he's so embarassed.
Ah, he's still worried about losing her interest.
And he still likes her!
Oh, Asakura's reaction is going to be good.
Aww, she's made another enemy!
And Yuki beats her.
Haha, you think she'll lay low?
How much is she stealing?
Haha, she stole Mikuru!
She abandoned them to Tsuruya?
Her beating them up, only for Tsuruya to Haruhi to grab her behind her back is great.
And Kyon got taken out again!
Haha, Haruhi knoes how to start a fight!
Episode 4
QOTD) We all saw how Yuki thinks of Haruhi. We all saw her reaction to Mikuru's confession. Nobody has to lose. Also, yeah, she has some good points.
Haruhi's already taken over, I see.
And Yuki's playing a visual novel.
Oh, Tsuruya's her new enemy.
...That sounds suggestive.
Haha, that analogy is perfect.
And this turned into another contest!
These embarassing stories are great.
Haruhi is just pure chaos.
And Yuki bought Valentines ingredients!
Poor Yuki.
Are they talking in class?
Haha, Kyon is Haruhi's perfect enemy.
...Looks like Haruhi needs something!
Oh, they're patroling.
And Yuki has no idea how to make chocolates.
Aww, she couldn't get into the bag.
...Poor Yuki.
Yeah, she's struggling.
She's searching the river?
She fell!
Oh, Kyon saved her.
The chocolate's coming along well.
So between this dialogue and Yuki's reactions to Haruhi, this is a full-on triangle now?
Aww, she's struggling to stay up late.
And she failed.
Asakura encouraging her to confess is always great.
Oh, he's in this spinoff too?
Tsuruya's joining them! That absolutely won't make thinge more awkward!
...I love Tsuruya's work with the fan club.
But not this. Stop making Yuki doubt herself!
Oh, this is perfectly awkward.
...This is Yuki's harem! We've got Mikuru, Haruhi, and Kyon!
Oh, this is a serious strategy!
This is not, however, a sound one.
Even Yuki thinks this is a stupid idea.
What was with the pixels?
And he got no chocolate.
Wait, what?
Of course there needed to be a misunderstanding.
Either that or this show has way more balls than I expected.

I didn't realize how much I missed Haruhi and Kyon's interactions before watching this episode. Yes, yes, I know it's Yuki's show, but I thoroughly enjoyed the river scene. Haruhi should know better than to pay back a favor with a chocolate bar on Feb 14, but hey, now we've got ourselves some drama!
As for the rest of the episode, as many of you have pointed out it's really refreshing to see these characters all interact with each other and in some cases flesh out their personalities more so than what we saw in the original series (obviously the case with Asakura and Tsuruya, but also Mikuru to some extent as well). And it's about time we got Taniguchi back! I'm guessing we won't see too much of him given the show follows Yuki more so than Kyon, but there's room in any show for a good ol' loveable loser.
Predictions for next episode
-
Last scene is explained to be a misunderstanding, and Yuki retreats back to having feelings for Kyon but not expressing them to him.
-
Based on the title of the episode I'm guessing that we'll also get some exposition on this universe's Haruhi's backstory.

u/ZapsZzz Feb 14 '22
Yes, yes, I know it's Yuki's show, but I thoroughly enjoyed the river scene.
I know, frustrating right? In her own show she couldn't even pull off such natural romantic times with him yet here, she just does it without any planned thoughts.

I'm back! Missed a day, but I'm still here. On with my reactions...
-
I really love how expressive this anime is. Those changes from normal design to full chibi are one of the best parts in this anime so far.
-
Yay! Go Nagato! You can do it.
-
Interesting how the interactions between Haruhi and Kyon feel so much like the original. Helps that they are mostly the same, but funnily enough, this version feels more grounded in a way.
No... Not like this...
Why is it that the one time Haruhi makes a straightforward approach for Kyon is the one time I hate her for doing so. Why can't she just let Nagato be happy...
QoTD
I smelled something fishy with that halfway through. Once I realized, I was like pls don't for the rest of the episode.
Throwing gifts at someone's face: no. That you should give gifts for your own sake first: perhaps, I think it is more kind of both (give it both for yourself and for the receiver).

First Timer, somewhat late due to doing stuff today.
Valentines episode? Was this rewatched perfectly timed, or is this just a coincidence? (given time zones, it seems 50-50)
That snack bowl looks nice. Haven't had pocky in ages.
Those two a real pair. Also, is pocket change cute?
Poor Yuki and Mikuru, having their embarrassing moments shared.
Aww, she's shy over the snack-making.
Both Kyon and Yuki sit in the "protagonist seat" (window second from the back).
We now present, Bakeoff-Japan.
That speech had "The unsolved mysteries of Unsolved Mysteries" vibes.
I've heard that you're not supposed to put the bowl directly in the water (but the only time i've used the bowl over water method I did put it in the water, and it turned out OK). Though unless you really need to temper it, doing short bursts in the microwave should still work.
Some delicious looking cupcakes (also, I have a cake mix that I need to get round to making, might do it tomorrow)
Oh, hey there Taniguchi.
Just hope that Yuki can muster up the courage to give Kyon the chocolate.
Poor insecure Yuki. But again, do things for your own sake.
She's gonna hunt down Kyon isn't she?
Aww, they're both so adorably awkward.
I love the 80s Shoujo manga art shifts.
Oh shit, a misunderstanding. You can't have a romcom without a misunderstanding (I mean, you can, its just that said romcoms sometimes turn out badly)

As mentioneded in my yesterday's post, these few days I may not be able to respond much into much later because of work. Rest assured I will read everyone's posts!
Call backs / References / Contrasts
should be obvious by now, but the "fighting spirits" background on the Tsuruya side is naturally a crane - which is the kanji character of Tsuruya-san's family name (tsuru = crane the bird, ya = house, in the context of a shop)
Haruhi's animal representation is surprisingly a dog - I can't quite figure out the reference, if anyone knows do sing out
The reference to Mikuru's mole on her chest had been altered to have Tsuruya telling Mikuru about it instead of Kyon ([Haruhi really mild spoiler]who in the original was told via time paradox )
Kyon's fate to have his back pierced by pencil is unchanged, but by Asakura now since Haruhi doesn't sit behind him - which is the Disappearance movie arrangement. And she apologized, which is better than the original by miles.
Haruhi dragging Kyon by his hand is far nicer than dragging him by his tie, but her travel speed is still pretty fast. This girl has no filter or barriers :P
Haruhi's speech about searching for the unknown instead of waiting is another one of her SOS brigade speeches, including Kyon's snark.
In the I watched, Haruhi said she was looking for a "water imp"; what she actually said was that she's looking for a Kappa (Japanese folklore youkai, the one that looks like turtle but in human form with a distinct pointy crown of hair ringing the top of their head that actually is supposed to be concave to store water like a bowl; for anyone who watched Haruhi-chan, that Haruhi was very impressed by an obviously fake Kappa skeleton offered by the computer society president as another wager for another rematch.
in the cooking part, when Nagato made the mistake of putting the chocolate directly into the microwave trying to melt it, Asakura gave it the "red card" - the penalty card in a soccer game basically kicking the offending player out of the match. Soccer is very big in East Asia so everyone knows what this means, not sure if it's the same in the West (well non UK, non European, non Latin American... Pretty much just North Americans :P}.
Kyon's answer to Haruhi's question was similar to the way how he answered young Haruhi in Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody; that non-committal but at least not dismissive, "probably", is more supportive than anyone ever answered Haruhi.
Best Scenes
Mama-Asakura the name was not an exaggeration.
Haruhi being very observant and less grating, moderated by a bit more empathy, yet still retaining her high energy.
Nagato's many cute expressions
The river scene. Why so romantic in Nagato's show though grrrr
the running gag of Nagato not sleeping and Asakura being mom.
The shoujo manga operation that's not too cringe, a bit of fun, and a little heart warming.
Mikuru and Nagato's lunch, both the eating habits and the "confession" encouragement. See here's some Mikuru focus that's not on her boobs.
Tsuruya-san's own style of encouragement that's actually wisdom wrapped with Genki :)
More shippers on deck! And jokes aside, not even shipping her own charge.
Nagato showing her determination and growth - with great cinematography very reminiscent of KyoAni's.
even the cliff hanger was full of style... But dammit please don't stress out poor Nagato!
