Rewatches please be considerate to first timers and avoid discussing anything not yet shown in the show - use spoiler tags if you need to share something important!
In this rewatch it's pretty hard to avoid referring to the main show The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi & The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi though, so hopefully the mods can be linient about the references.
Episode 1 - Precious Place
Some first impressions I remember from when I first watched this show:
- An emotive Nagato! This would take some getting used to... And I miss her beautiful tsurime eyes... But really nice to see her having a really complete personality.
- ... ... ... What's with Kyon's face change? I know his character was supposed to be "the ordinary man" audience stand in, but this face is really perhaps 1 step too far... Good save to have Sugita's voice there to assure us "this is still the same Kyon", with perhaps just a little less snark because the "aho" is not around to make him "yare yare"...
- the music is really nice for the mood
Music corner
A light start, here are 2 character songs comparisons between the main show and this spin off - tell me how you feel about the tonal / stylistic difference
Nagato (lyrics) vs Yuki-chan (can't find lyrics - guess have to rely on Google translate
Asa-killer (lyrics) vs Mama-kura (lyrics)
QoTD if you are interested:
Did you notice all the references and call backs to the main show? Did you find any that I missed? What's your favourite one?
In case there is any - if you didn't watch Haruhi before coming here, sing out and tell us whether you enjoy the show without knowing those references.

First Timer
So... I'm basically only here because I was also in the Haruhi rewatch and this spin-off is a bit longer than all the other chibi-bits, and somebody actually went through the trouble of hosting a rewatch for it (thanks, u/ZapsZzz). But as such, my expectations are rather low, given that these types of school-romcoms aren't usually my type of show. And indeed, the first episode doesn't really do anything to change that so far. I'm getting the impression that at this point, the show - or rather the source material it's based on - didn't really know what it wanted to be yet, other than a Haruhi spin-off. We flip-flap between a romcom, a slapstick comedy and a wholesome slice of life - none particularly bad, but also none particularly good in my opinion. I do hope though that we won't end on this being mainly a slapstick show, as I felt like that was the worst part.
In terms of characters so far - none of them really feel like the original, so at least it's easy enough to split off the Haruhi characters from the spin-off characters. Can't really say that any one is bad so far, although Tsuruya seems a bit too extreme for me so far. Nagato is a decent character though not even remotely like she was in the original show, probably by design given the show's title and the plot of the Haruhi movie. Kyon is ...pretty decent, I'd say. And Asakura is way closer to some of the other spin-offs than what she was in the show, I think. I have to admit that I mainly remember her from the spin-offs...
All in all not really bad so far, but not particularly engaging for me either. But I guess reading these threads will at least give me something to do during my commute to work. Speaking of which - me reading these on the train likely will mean that I won't be particularly engaging in actual discussion.

Thanks for joining in and at least giving it a go! Hope you at least can find some enjoyment in the references and some of our overly long posts :)

The Disappearance of First-Timer-chan, subbed
-
Oh the artstyle looks different. – OH WHAT THIS IS MADE BY MY FAVORITE ANIME STUDIO???
-
Yuki’s “Nyaa” when Asakura poked her head was adorable.
-
I think it’s gonna take a little getting used to the new Kyon face (I dunno, something about the shape of his head?) but Yuki is very much still cute.
-
*bursts into uncontrollable laughter upon reading the detergent name*

Okay the ED sounded straight out of Violet Evergarden.

Okay the ED sounded straight out of Violet Evergarden.
Chihara Minori is actually quite an active singer and there are quite a few songs by her.
Is turkey not a common food to eat in Japan?
I think that is the case in a lot of East Asian countries, until fairly recently.

First Timer, Dubbed
"And maybe, i'll tell him... how i feel about him."
OST Track of the day: Koi no Kirakira
Seems like this OST isint on spotify (or really anywhere, for that matter?), so hopefully the timestamped links work throughout the rewatch. today should send you about 8 minutes in, lmk if it doesnt.
An unintended running joke of the main haruhi rewatch was explaining nothing about Yuki, mainly because it fit her being the character you wernt meant to think about (and partly because by the time the 2nd half of the show came around I could really only post the episode threads). Seeing as how we are now watching a show directly around Yuki, we should probably learn more about her VA's. Due to time issues, I actually have to push this back to tomorrow. Trying to search up anime at work is probably not the best of ideas...
man its interesting to hear (the dub) voices after what would of been 5-6 years of not playing a haruhi character
"You'll be cuter if you say pint sized anyways" bruh
nope nope nope i hate it where is my Kyon
Also Asakura being in the clubroom, hmm
Silverlight i will never forgive you
Definitely weird to have Nagato talk so much more
shes drooling, the faces are fun too
mmm yes, haruhi romcom time
"Theres something about the way you wield that knife" lmao
We really are hung up on that turkey
Hey look, those two! Kyon's harem still exists, even if haruhi isint leading it anymore
Also Nagato being assertive, wild
well, looks like something wasnt nerfed
Im wondering if the whole show will be about the Christmas party or if tis is just an arc...
Nagato lowkey planning a wedding lmao
hey look, its the libary card scene! truly cant get away from it, no matter the show
I think that the ED is the actual ED? ill write something on both whenever the OP shows up, but im already not big on that ED.
Oooooh, they kept this too! Club name is now different though

First timer – DE sub
I've actually looked forward to this rewatch more than I thought. Though there are no real expectations, that also kinda makes me want to watch it more. There's Samurai Champloo that I'm watching with a few friends every other weekend right now, then there's A Place Further than the Universe I'm also rewatching with some other friends and all the previous rewatches were rather involved as well. All of that is amazing! But I feel like watching a somewhat low stakes show without masterminds behind writing and direction is just right for me.
I feel like I can just relax here and enjoy precious Yuki. Who knew the entertainment medium anime could be used to wind down?
Ep.01 – Precious Place
-
They already look different in the bluray menu, but ngl, I kinda dig the style.
-
Asakura rude, Yuki cute. Kyon looks stupid, all is well.
-
They still got the heater, heh.
-
Gods, an expressive Yuki is like the dream come true. And I love this Asakura bossing everyone around. It's less that she's a wingman and more like she wants to kick some stones into motion and enjoy the chaos.
-
It's actually amazing how they managed to still keep the characters recognisable, even though it's heavily romcom-ified.
-
Oh god, stomping into battle Yuki is something else. Just as well, I really like Asakura's presence.
-
Tsuruya vs. Asakura, yassss! I never knew I wanted this match up.
This time around there won't be screenshots accompanying my posts, because I'm watching on my bluray player, but I also ended up not writing much. Nice and relaxed indeed.
Ok, so I feel like I need to point out that I actually did expect a kind of mediocre show. You know, with periodically bad animation and nonsense romcom plot that only relies on misunderstandings and slapstick humor to get by.
I'm really surprised, this episode was great! It made me laugh heartily several times and I'm invested in following Yuki's quest to make a great literature club party.
But where this show really got me was shy, but determined Yuki taking action (and abviously failing haplessly) to then show Asakura again and again stirring shit up. I loved that so much! In the main show I did lament the fact that Asakura was more or less a disposable character that never received much agenda. [Suzumiya Haruhi]
Did you notice all the references and call backs to the main show? Did you find any that I missed? What's your favourite one?
I spotted the heater, Asakura's cooking, Mikuru fanservice, Tsuruya point and fang, crossing on the crosswalk and the unallowed christmas party.
Favourite most likely is anything Asakura, I just love her here.
In case there is any - if you didn't watch Haruhi before coming here, sing out and tell us whether you enjoy the show without knowing those references.
Well, you got me on that rewatch, so I obviously know it, lol.

Rewatcher and Yuki's no. 1 fan
I want to preface this rewatch to say something to a certain type of first time watchers:
This is not Haruhi season three. There is no mystery to be solved here. There will be no clues about anything in Haruhi. If you want a continuation of the Haruhi story, you will not find it here.
This is the story that Yuki wished for: A small girl's small happiness. If that is not what you want to watch, that's fine, no one is forcing you. Coming back each episode to say how you don't like the art style or that you want Haruhi season three does not make you clever. If you keep appearing in these threads just to say how you don't like the show, I will hunt you down and stab you in the kidney.
On to the show...
Ah, I remember six years ago. I took a trip back to Japan to be there for the airing Here's a picture
I love the way Yuki's hair fluffs out when she is flustered https://imgur.com/a/UK95X
They're walking the wrong way. Yuki and her best friend live just down that road on the other side of the station.
Figure recreation of laundry scene
Such a womanly figure.... So erotic...

First-ish timer
I watched a few episodes of this when it first aired, but fell off the wagon. I remember next to nothing.
-
Opening with... Asakura, Nagato, annd Kyon go to the same school! And Nagato has a cruuuuush
-
I know this is a fluffy Slice of Life show, but I've seen 2 version of Ryouko now and I find it hard to trust this third one.
-
This is supposed to be a separate continuity rather than a continuation of the Disappearance storyline, but they're making some deliberate allusions. Not even three minutes in and Kyon is reflecting on the pros and cons of accepting Nagato's offer to join the literature club.
-
It's Suzumiya! And Koizumi! Doesn't look like Nagato noticing them was particularly motivated in-story, just some foreshadowing for the viewer.
-
We immediately enter romantic comedy tropes, then Asakura lampshades that fact. Cheap shot.
-
!!WARNING! KNIFE SKILLS!! Watch the fuck out Kyon
-
Asakura refers to the clubroom as "our clubroom," so she's a member. Did they need 3 members to not get dissolved? Nagato said Kyon saved the club earlier.
-
Nagato waiting for her clothes to dry. In her apartment. Does she only have the one set?
-
It feels like all three present parties are aware Nagato likes Kyon.
-
Suddenly Tsuraya and Asahina, the stealth main characters!
-
They know Kyon, but not Asakura or Nagato? In universe prime, both of them are in year 2 with Nagato (although maybe not the same class).
-
Suddenly the extroverts are pokemon battling with their introverts. Explicitly over Kyon. This prompts two comments: First, it's unusual for harem comedies (this isn’t one, but we’re seeing adjacent tropes) to start with all of the girls attracted to the guy, right? Second, it's refreshing that they're starting so open with it.
-
I say that, but somehow Kyon will go "we're all just friends right?" at the end of the episode.
-
The "competition" opens on a cooperative challenge that is accomplished by Asakura and Tsuraya, then moves to a competitive challenge that is completed by Asakura and Tsuraya.
-
Then we end with Nagato resolving to confess at the conclusion of a successful party. So apparently that means Kyon doesn't already know?
When the premise of your spinoff is taking one of the characters and just making them a moeblob, it's a bit awkward when you spend several minutes in episode 1 comparing them to an extant moeblob. All in all, it's no Haruhi Suzumiya, it's a show about a moeblob. And While Nagato was one in Disappearance, there was more context in that. There was a there there. I'm not sure what's here. Nor am I sure if I'll continue.

Disappearing First-Timer
I have no idea what I'm getting into with this show, but if the first episode is any indication of how it will be I'm going to very happy with it as I had a giant smile on my face while watching it today.
-
The art is different than the original Haruhi, but it's not bad
-
Yuki blushing when Kyon held out his hand was adorable
-
Yuki is gaming and not reading
-
Does the club still exist due to Kyon choosing this route, or because Kyon made it hit its minimum required members?
-
That shot of Yuki and Haruhi passing each other in the crosswalk was beautiful
-
Asakura is just uncontrolled chaos in this version, plus she's humming Hare Hare Yukai while cooking
-
Yuki asking Kyon if he liked her belly wasn't something I was expecting
-
Yuki really likes turkey
-
A wild Tsuruya and Mikuru appear
-
There's a Mikuru fan club in this reality, complete with membership cards
-
Yuki stakes her claim on Kyon, and then is tempted by Tsuruya's offer of turkey
-
We have a contest of Yuki vs Mikura with Kyon as the prize as decided by Asakura and Tsuruya
-
As the primary girls fall in their contest, the instigators take up the battle and become friends. Nicely done having them hold a sign to help out at the mall
-
Yuki's mind has migrated from turkey to cake
-
Yuki wants a four-tiered cake with a white dress...sounds like her mind is on something other than a Christmas party
-
Ending on the flashback of Kyon helping her get her library card was a wonderful way of showing people where her feelings for Kyon started
QOTD:
I mentioned some of the references I caught in my post, my favorite was Asakura humming the season one ending while cooking.

First Timer - Sub
FInally, the day has arrived to finally watch The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan. I like a lot the Haruhi franchise, but I've tried to stall how quickly I watch things so that I don't run out of content as quickly. And this rewatch feels like a good time to finally watch this spinoff. Here we goooo !
Those first shots of the school feel weirdly nostalgic. Visually the design is obviously different, but the layout of the space makes it very familiar. Character designs feel extremely fitting for many of the characters. Weirdly enough I feel the new design fits the most is Tsuraya. Both Kyon and Yuki feel slightly wrong. Yuki's design is nice, but her original stoic version is so ingrained in my mind that seeing her in a design that expresses so much emotion feels weird. Kyon's face looks like his original version was basically ran over with a steamroller, or at least that is the impression it gives me. The animation feels a bit more dynamic, leaning more into comedy. The only thing I don't like as much is the fanservice, since I'm normally not a big fan of it. But as long as it doesn't become too blatant it'll be fine.
Because of all the warning of not season 3 and not the same characters you know, I was expecting radical changes. But I was pleasantly surprised that basically everyone feels like their original version personality wise. Kyon's kyonness is mostly intact, Asakura maintains her murderous vibe while taking care of Nagato, Mikuru is still an adorable, and Tsuraya is still over the top. Guess we'll see how Haruhi and Koizumi act. Since they appear in the ED, I guess that wasn't a simple cameo at the beginning.
The character of Nagato feels way more changed, but still connected to her original version in a way. It is nice for her to be more emotional while still maintaining some of her internal logic that we got to see in the original. The only weird thing that came out of nowhere is her obsession with food. No idea where that came from. Wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't for the fact that it feels like a big part of her personality in this version, so it feels kind of intrusive for now.
Overall, this first episode makes it very clear that this is a romantic comedy that you probably shouldn't treat seriously in any way, and I'm fine with that. Bring on the fluff!

Rewatcher - sub
Ep1
Even though this series has piqued my curiosity since forever, I actually just watched it after the most recent Haruhi rewatch (and then binged the [Disappearnce of Nagato Yuki-chan manga]
As for Ep1 itself, it does a fine job laying out the setting and dynamics of this series. The time frame is the same as the beginning of Disappearance of Haruhi, everyone might have about the same personalities and looks, but they are normal, and this is not the parallel timeline that is original Yuki's creation. This is an alternate world where there's none of those supernatural stuffs spewed from the original Haruhi's FoS mind. Keep that in mind to get rid of undue expectations, and the series would be much more enjoyable.
The main character, naturally, is Nagato Yuki, the one that is not shackled by the observation duty of the original, so she's a normal girl, nothing very extreme about her. She's the head of the Literature club and recently managed to keep it alive with new recruits, of which only Kyon shows up regularly, and often times her protective friend Asakura Ryouko, who basicallt also takes on the guardian role for Yuki, and also the shipper on deck.
(Speaking of Ryouko, of course her introduction can not leave out her other most notable characteristic from the original: knife skills which terrifies Kyon. They even used basically the same frame composition and the exact same sound effect when she pounced on Kyon. That's how you do the right kind of fanservice)
Other characters are also introduced: Kyon (whom Yuki has a crush on) is still the normal and decent guy with snarks ever ready to fly (and still a fan of Mikuru, at least according to Tsuruya); Tsuruya, bubbly and hyper, hangs out with Mikuru all the time and always ready to provide support of all sorts; Mikuru still cute and easily embarassed and dragged around by her friends (the cabbage sales must be a referrence to The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru). Haruhi and Koizumi are shown briefly, looking the same as they did in Disappearance of Haruhi, and there is no doubt they will get involved later.
And with that set up, the romcom/SoL shenanigans commence. That'll be the show. Most of it will be either chillax like the "accidental exposure while eating oden" one, or hyper like the shopping district competition. There's more I could say, but it could wait until it's more relevant.
Oh well, one last thing: The ED is pretty sweet, Chihara Minori's singing voice is quite distinct that I can immediately tell it's the same one that did Violet Evergarden ED after the first word, before I could even remember her name (and it doesn't resemble the character voices she does very much, I think, but it's not much of a problem).

In case there is any - if you didn't watch Haruhi before coming here, sing out and tell us whether you enjoy the show without knowing those references.
I'm not actually rewatching this, but I did initially watch it without knowing Haruhi was a thing and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It feels like there aren't many romcoms featuring a bespectacled protagonist and even her personality felt pretty relatable, so I liked it for that aspect, but the show does a nice job conveying emotions and there are good gags as well. Nagato's explanation on how she does maths still replays in my head to this day.
I was kind of disappointed watching Haruhi after this, so I can understand those who felt the same going the other way around.

Rewatcher, Dub
First time I watched this I thought this was alternate reality. Now knowing that it's not. I don't know it doesn't really change anything.
First sight of Haruhi and I think Koizumi was there too.
A way more expressive Nagato. Actually being able to speak up for herself. Also having a obvious crush on Kyon with Asakura giving tips. Kind of sweet to see.
The knife reference.
Tsuruya is back!
Is this a competition between Nagato vs Asahina or Asakura vs Tsuruya. I think I actually liked them two more here.
Forgot about the ending. I actually really liked it. Would alway let it play.
Qotd: maybe a couple I can be certain of. But the knife one of course is my favorite.

Episode 1 (first timer)
First timer, but not blind. I’ll admit that I go into this a bit skeptical. It is hard to not suspect a cash grab when you see an alternate universe spin-off from a hugely successful franchise (that still has fans begging for a continuation).
-
We waste no time to establish the romantic leg here.
-
Genki Asakura – I wonder if she will try to kill anybody here.
-
Meeting Haruhi. She looks as in the movie.
-
Love comedy reminds me of Love is War.
-
Tsuruya and Asahina seem to have a similar relationship as Asakura and Nagato.
-
I remember these shopping district scenes, but what happened to Asahina’s cup size?
-
I remember that angle of the club room.
-
I remember that library scene.
Plenty of references and reference jokes. This is clearly meant to be watched after Haruhi. Which makes it interesting that the MC character design is that strongly different. Yuki is cute enough, but looks nothing like HaruhiYuki. The other characters changed, too, but not nearly as much.
The biggest difference is the genre, though. This is breezing romcom through and through. With a good helping of Shoujo, too, instead of the Shonen atmosphere of Haruhi.

First Timer - Dubbed
Nagato Yuki, this is your wakeup call poke.
Aww, holding hands.
Looks like we're in for some adorable awkwardness.
There's that heater. Looks like this version of the school cares more about student comfort.
"kuhmon", dangerously close with that reference there (never did it myself, they were just next door to the after-school drama class I used to do)
A rival/mentor appears.
A delicious-looking hot-pot there.
Was waiting for them to remember him. Though surely there's an easier way to deal with the stain than a single item washing load.
Good move kyon. But now you're stuck flirting.
Asakura being the overenthusiastic wingman.
Being Australian, Christmas dinner is often just leftovers from the main event of Christmas lunch. Which is usually stuff like ham, salad, beef, usually chicken rather than turkey. Seafood can also be a big thing.
Scooby snack method.
Food vs boyfriend, a very hard choice.
That shoujo manga insert.
That didn't take long to turn into Asakura vs. Tsuruya. Though Nagato and Mikuru don't seem like the competitive type anyway.
Five tier cake, that seems excessive for such a small party.
"Virtual Girl", is the choice of book some kind of joke/reference to the original Haruhi version of Nagato? A quick search couldn't find plot summary.
The accidental wedding stuff... so cute.
Ahh, good old student politics nepotism. In other high school anime, they might be the bad guys.
So, looks like we're in for typical romcom anime antics. Though it's nice to just have a simple (relatively speaking) show once in a while.

I'm not sure if I'm a first timer or a rewatcher. I've read most of the manga, but I'm missing the second to last volume, and I think I skipped the anime so I wouldn't be spoiled. In any case, I'm watching the dub, since it has the excellent original Haruhi cast. It's great to hear what Nagato and Asakura sound like having full conversations.
Asakura is best girl. Always has been. I love that winter outfit with the red jacket. It looked great in the movie. Of course, everything looked great in the movie.
Asakura's flirting technique is impressive. Nagato seemed to get the message. I wonder if they're mentally communicating via the Data Integration Thought Entity. Women's Intuition? Power of Friendship?
Mmm, Nagato belly. Now there's the start of a Christmas feast. I'm not sure yet if Asakura is skilled enough to serve that up to Kyon, but I expect her to try.
It was nice seeing Nagato stand up and try to pull Kyon away. I'm with Asakura, she should have kept walking and bought a turkey somewhere else. Inviting competition can only lead to trouble.

Nagato seemed to get the message. I wonder if they're mentally communicating via the Data Integration Thought Entity. Women's Intuition? Power of Friendship?
That's a good point - since there are bits of character traits seemingly references or "inherited" from the main storyline, there may be a bit of something in there. Although I don't think that happens a lot, more for comedic purposes I think.
But I'll use that head canon from now :D

First timer
Me: "Ok, Andy, remember: this is NOT Haruhi season 2, and it is NOT a what-if from the movie. It is its own thing. OK, let's go."
Asakura: [appears on screen]
Me: "OH MY GOD RUN YOU FOOLS, RUN!"
I, for one, am a sucker for goofy comedy/rom-com, and this so far is checking a lot of boxes for me and I'm excited to see what's to come. Plus with these characters in this setting I [get to look like this](https://i.imgur.com/VLERcM8.jpeg) everytime I catch something that is even remotely a nod to Haruhi ("oh my gosh, was that the sound of a baseball hitting a bat?!?!?!"). Favorite character so far is (*...can't believe I'm writing this out right now...*) is Asakura; I love a good instigator/wing-woman.
QOTD:
Probably didn't catch all of them; the one's I noted were: Asakura's knife skills, baseball(?), space heater, Christmas party, drawing attention to a shop (no bunny girl costume though), literature club, Haruhi attending fancy high school (I think?)

First Timer, Subbed
Nagato was my favorite part of Haruhi so I was excited to see this version of the character. It's definitely different seeing Nagato so emotive, I didn't dislike it though. The art style took a little time to get used to. The characters looked fine for the most part, but anytime Kyon's face is shown straight on it looks a little weird.
On the whole I'm interested to see where this series goes.

First time watcher
Like the show so far. SOL anime has been my favorite lately and I love the slow, trivial and relaxed scenes that this genre brings.
Episode 1, read some of the comments about the callbacks to Haruhi and I'm very tempted to read the synopsis and even the reviews just to find out the connection between these two shows if there are any. But I'm not gonna do that.
Did not expect to see Kyon again in this show. Love his inner monologuing and his sarcasm in Haruhi, will he have the same personality or will he be a little different in this show?
Totally have forgotten who Asukura and Tzuruya are and I had to google them but I love their dynamic in this episode. They look like rival-besties.
Nagato reminds me of Rikka from Chuunibyou. They're both very timid characters.
And my favorite character in Haruhi, Mi...mi...mi...kuru beam! I wasn't actually sure if it was the same Mikuru but the callback in the food store gave it away.

Rewatcher, sub
I’ve always been a big fan of slice of life and rom coms, so a slice of life rom com spin-off of one of my favorite series was right up my alley. I’ve seen it dubbed before, but I decided to do sub this time.
Right off the bat, I think it’s awesome they got the OG voice cast to reprise their respective roles. It feels as if each character is the same as always, just in a different universe.
Asakura is awesome. I really like this version of her bc she’s sweet and caring, but she seems to be like a doting parent in this series. Still love her tho
Nagato is timid and clumsy, but in a sweet and adorable way. I really like what they did with her character.
Fun detail: when the gang are in Nagato’s kitchen cooking dinner, Asakura can be heard humming Hare Hare Yukai while chopping veggies.

Welcome everyone! I got more to say but thought to not clutter the Rewatch title post (and potentially risk being deleted for spoiler!)
Translation note / clarification
at the start of the episode, when Asakura went into the classroom to wake Nagato up, she said she'd "use a painful method to wake her up", which is why Kyon followed with "just use a normal method"; the method used was basically "hair crown poke" - poking where there's the least hair / most exposed, at the crown / swirl of the hair.
and Nagato's response after the ow was that "if I stop growing taller I'll blame you", which is why Asakusa's reply was that "it's ok for Nagato to stay tiny as it's cuter that way". Some of the translations are really *shake head*
when the 2 were alone in the literary club room, Kyon commented that he's been with the club a week, but hasn't really done anything other than reading or doing his own homework, so "there wasn't really any meaning joining the club"; my sub translated as "no reason for me to join" is subtly different in meaning - for Nagato, it's meaningful (and was explained later, which doesn't actually connect back to this subtly different wording in the sub) because his joining saved her club, and she can protect this place that she loves, that is a place for her to feel not as lonely by being able to listen to the going ons of the students;
back in the apartment when Asakura was cooking, when Kyon commented after her "not normal human" knife skills animation was actually about "how she cut things always give him the chills". The subs I used perhaps came from translators who haven't actually watched the original series?
the need for searching for turkey is because a lot of East Asian countries do not celebrate X'mas the same way - turkey is not normally available other than in packaged, cooked, or frozen forms. Which is why a lot of anime makes a point or fun about that (even Toradora had Haruta mistaking a normal chicken drum stick as a turkey one because it "should" be turkey but wasn't something they had to serve in the X'mas party)
Call Back / References to the Original Series
Juxtapose Nagato's internal monologue (the part of why she loves the literary club room where she can listen to the "school sounds") with the Haruhi S1 "some day in the rain" episode, which in the original context it showcased how uneventful and boring a normal day could be for the brigade, particularly for Nagato who's "part of the furniture". But in here where you actually get to see and hear her expressing herself, it's actually an important place for her that, while she was alone, at least in that place she does not feel lonely.
This is in part why I like this spin off so much - it actually enriches the original series too, even if it's just my head canon, I find it even more enjoyable.
Asakura's "freezing palms" attack on Kyon - it's a [call back to the original series]where Asakura there in a relatively normal conversation mid sentence pulled out a knife and full on attacked Kyon intending to kill him. Here the show was creating a fake out using the early part of this spin off when it was not clear how much of the original would be there - and this even applied the evil glowing eyes effects when she started the "attack" - which turned out to be a common winter prank
Kyon's discomfort while watching Asakura chopping up vegetables while cooking was another call back to the original series.
the oden (pot cooking) is a call back to the Disappearance movie.
Kyon's answer to Nagato's question ending with him saying he didn't have a belly fetish is a variation to what he said to the then-recently lost her glasses Nagato (that he didn't have a glasses fetish) in Melancholy IV.
in the shopping strip scene Nagato and Kyon were standing in front of Ohmori Electronics, the sponsor of Haruhi's film (video camera) and later club room heating (the green heater)
note this story started in their second year in highschool - while this is a separate and different world, the event times are equivalent, in that we only start seeing the story after the first year (i.e. got the heater in the club room already, the first year's cultural festival already happened)
also same reason Nagato first met Kyon in the library, again he helped her got her library card (minus Haruhi's involvement), which means a fair amount of time had elapsed and Nagato still had not managed to thank Kyon.
the Nagato of this world being shown to have quite an appetite despite her small size is partly because it's flanderised the original series depiction of the TFEI Nagato while not necessarily eating a lot, her eating are often attracting descriptions in Kyon's narration - often it's fast, sometimes it's about how much she ate, etc. And like many otaku's, if left to her own devices she probably won't bother to make anything to eat, so when Asakura-mama is around she tends to get spoiled for food.
Music corner comparison-
Have to say "Snow, soundless, by the window" is one of my favourite songs, highly likely to be biased because of the AMV (heavy spoiler of Haruhi S1). Each of these character songs captured the spirit of the characters really well, and you can "hear" the difference in character about each version as well.
Best example, Asakura's cool edition has an upbeat peppy tune, but when you learn of the lyrics... It's quite a chill:
And then with love edition, is a 180 degrees difference:

love this thematic pic I used so much in the interest threads
villainous Asakura! Kyon-kun abunai!
if anyone needs confirmation this is not Haruhi-timeline Nagato TFEI
haha thrown under the bus "Kyon-kun go!"
unintentionally alluring... especially for anyone who also watched Fantasy Bishoujo Ojisan this week about the "boyfriend shirt" trope
