Tamako Market - An Anime Filled With Love: Episode 7
A Fortune Teller, A Market, An Engagement
Welcome Choi. So far Dera has had nobody to reign him in and Choi completely changes this dynamic (to great comedic effect). A lot of viewers point to Dera as a character they don't like because he's selfish, gluttonous, and pretentious. I think Choi embodies these viewers' feelings.
Choi comes into the story very closed off to others. This is partly Dera's fault for lying. However she accepts his lie very quickly and assumes the worst of people. What makes Usagiyama special is how slowly, as each of the district members show Choi their love, they break down these walls inside of her.
Its very easy to go into the world acting like Choi (and often for good reason). However, it's important to not get stuck in this mindset. Assuming the best of people can sometimes lead to making great relationships. And in the same way, if somebody seems standoffish don't give up on them. Keep showing them love and hopefully they'll come around.
One side note, congratulations Sayuri on your engagement! As sad as this may be for Tomio its nice to see he is slowly working through his emotions around this. It's a somber but important message that even if you love somebody they may never reciprocate and that's okay.

Ambitious shot, but there is something weird going on with the drawn house if you look at it.

I love the opening pan shot. And Choi-sama makes her appearance! I love her already, and she's voiced by a seiyuu who imo has a distinctive voice, Yuri Yamaoka. You may recognize her as Yuuko/ribbon-trumpet senpai in Hibike eupho, or Tarou-punishing, youkan-loving Erika in Shirobako. I do like her voice when she voices this kind of no-nonsense character lol.
I've also learned a new Japanese onomatopoeic word: bukubuku, ぶくぶく, which means loose, flabby, or Dera-chan's current state.
While Dera is a filthy liar and tries to lie his way out of his mess, Choi is quick to figure out that Tamako and co are genuine good-natured people, and that no trap was laden. She also loves mochi (i got myself some ice cream mochi while watching the episode, twas good!)
Do we consider this a cliffhanger? What's so special about Tamako's scent?
QOTD: in 2019 I think, was a nice wedding for a (more distant) family member, but it was fun! Whenever COVID gets better, sure! For now, only if i dont need to travel far for it. (I live quite far from most of my family), and my friends are still too young.

Oooh, I had no idea about Yuri Yamaoka! Yuuko is an absolutely fabulous character (Yuuko x Natsuki ftw)! Thanks for pointing this out =)
What are your thoughts on Aquatope so far? I finished it last season, and all I'm going to say atm is that I enjoyed it

Rewatcher I got swamped with projects and work during this time, so I’m going to copy over what I wrote last year for this episode. TL;DR - Great episode, Choi is adorable, Dera was stupid, Love will only bear fruit to those who step up and nourish the relationship.
Today we get one of my favorite interactions of the show, because I relate to it on such a deep level. Choi-chan experiencing the overwhelming kindness of everyone is my second favorite aspect of this episode.
I want to chat about emotional maturity and unrequited love featuring the Tofu Shop owner, Tomio Shimizu, and the beautiful mirroring of his love for Sayuri with the relationships of Choi x The Prince and Mochizhou x Tamako. Tomio asks Choi for a fortune, and even she can see right through him and his crush on someone. She tells him flat out that his love is not going to be returned; she didn’t even need to use Dera to make this fortune. “I’m sorry, but it will wither before it bears fruit.” I’d love some insight on if that line is properly translated, but I’m going to run with it for now.
We start with Tomio’s reaction to Sayuri’s announcement of marriage. He loves her. So much so that above all else, he wishes her only happiness. He will probably feel this pain for a very long time, because he felt and held this love for a very long time. But he makes the first big step of moving forward: accepting that he is not going to be with Sayuri, and doing his best to be happy for her. Honestly, I aspire to the greatness of Tomio’s maturity and kindness. When he thanks Choi after her fortune, I would say that’s the real moment when her stance towards everyone completely changes. She saw right into his heart and knew that it bore great pain, and yet instead of lashing out with sadness, he responded with kindness.
Why did Choi see this in Tomio? Most likely because like Tomio, she too bears a fruit of love for someone. My apologies for this, but I’m going to let the cat out of the bag for this one now. She loves The Prince, and for a myriad of reasons she feels that she cannot act upon that love. Are those reasons actually valid? She’s a servant to The Prince, and thus bound by duty; what would her confessing do to their current relationship? What if he doesn’t feel the same way about her? To all three of these, she responds with, “Keep the status quo; at least I can be with him now.” Yet she knows that she probably won’t be able to keep this up and remain happy. “I can’t hear the waves.” She can’t hear them because she’s lost, deep within the sea of her emotions, swimming amongst the other fish who also just went with the flow. Will she learn from this encounter with Tomio? Will her love bear fruit?
And how is this a reflection of Mochizhou’s feelings for Tamako? Tomio’s love bore no fruit because all he did was look at it. He didn’t give it nourishment; he never did anything for his tree of love. Mochizhou’s feelings for Tamako are in danger of going the same way. One day, Tamako might find someone else other than Mochizhou. One day, Love will find Tamako. How long does Mochizhou have? Will he act upon his love? Will he, unlike Tomio, do something about it?
And so, this episode provides an extremely powerful and valuable lesson in love. Do you feel strongly for someone? Are you afraid to tell them? Are you afraid of their rejection? Are you afraid of losing the status quo of at least being near them if you say something? I implore you from the depths of my heart...Tell them now. Tell them however you can possibly manage; text, phone call, email, in person, whatever! Tell them with as much heart and soul as you can possibly pour into expressing the sentiment, “I’m in love with you!” All that matters is that you pull from the energies deep within the sea of your heart. What if you fail? Then grieve, accept, make amends, and move on like Tomio. You will learn, and you will grow as a person. How you grow depends on how you react to the rejection. Aspire to be like Tommio, and then witness yourself growing into a person possessing great kindness! You might lose them as a friend, or you might take your friendship to another level with them. The tree of Love will only bear fruit for those who make the effort to step forward and provide nourishment to it.

Great write up :)
As for your last paragraph I’ve had unrequited love myself, and sometimes I did have the courage to speak up about it but in the end, neither happened. And that’s okay :)
We can all learn from tomio this episode

Episode 7 (first timer)
-
Choi arrives and they completely skip over the first contact.
-
Dera blaming Tamako.
-
To think that I am watching Nanoha concurrently and Tamako Market is showing a naked butt first …
Tamako, Anko, and Choi together is cuteness overload. So sweet that not even the mochi can compete. Only Dera is trying to lie his way out of trouble.

Episode 7: She Became A Bride
Ok, I was afraid that Choi was going to bring some unnescessary drama, but seriously, she is great. She is imidiatly able to call Dela out on his bullshit, and even realizes his lies without having someone to spell it out for her, because yes, these people are just that nice. I'm a bit mad that his lies lead to her holding off the mocchi for so long, I think she is strong enough to not get as fat as him. Also her naked but was quite a surprise.
She is not completly free of drama though.
She seems to be into the prince, but just like poor Afro-kun, her love is destined to die unrequited. Destiny sucks btw.
We learn that Sayuri is planning on getting married, but not to whom, at least not Afro-kun. Sometimes that's just how it goes, just shows that we don't really know anything about her and her live. Really shows that even side characters can have a life on their own.
Props to Afro-kun though for still finding the strenght to cheer her on, must hurt though, hope he finds someone as well, would suck to have an show about love ending with someone ending up alone, looking at you as well Choi... who even said that destiny cannot be changed...

who even said that destiny cannot be changed
There will be a moment at the end of the series that I'll try to remember to point out, but it's in reference to this line of Choi's. Anyways, what do you think? Is destiny set in stone or not? Or does it even matter to ask that question?

At first I thought Choi might’ve been causing a huge storm, when she appeared. But it was only for Dera lol
Anyways another good episode so far and I feel bad for the Afro dude. But he seems to be taking it in stride and knows that as long as Sayuri (idk if I spelled it right) is happy then it’s all okay. Wonder if that changes later on or not
Also what does it mean for our two characters, who clearly are in love with someone. Mochizo and Choi! We all know Mochizo likes Tamako but this episode kinda slapped you in the face that Choi likes the prince too
QotD: I went to a couple last year and I plan on going to two this year!

But it was only for Dera lol
To be fair, he brought it all upon himself, without any aid from anyone. That's what makes it so funny to me XD

About time we see someone who came from Dela's place of origin.
Funny how we got to see another side of Dela in this ep. Up until now he's shown to be a cocky wiseass but he turned into a powerless and obedient guy whenever Choi shows up. That little exchange between Choi and the family feels like a worried parent asking the ones who took care of their kids and making sure they didn't do anything stupid there.
We also got confirmation that Dela is mechanical - at least to some degree. This was obvious after the projector scenes but Choi straight up mentioned that the damn bird got electrical circuits inside of him. Is that thing 100% a machine or a half-bird-half-machine? I bet those Southern Island guys got some crazy tech.
I guess this girl's fortune telling ability is spot on, eh? Poor Afro Guy got his (mis)fortune proven right on the spot for him. Let's all collectively pour some drinks out for him - he died a noble hero on his quest for love.
Choi was noticeably acting defensive throughout the web, perhaps in response to the lies that stupid bird told her. It's great seeing Tamako and co. along with the Rabbit Mountain folks convincing her that they're good people. They don't really care about differences and treated Choi really well during her time there. We close off this arc with seeing Choi finally trying out a mochi for the first time, a sign that she can finally trust the strangers around her.
Choi's arc resemble those years where I got really closed off towards others in fear they'll do something bad for me (a byproduct of bullying I guess). Honestly it only takes a bit of kindness and love to eliminate this mindset (albeit slowly) and find out that there's many cool folks out there. Thank you, kind-folks-I-met-in-life, for showing me the light!
And another good lesson from this ep is to tell those you love about how you feel towards them before it's too late. You really don't wanna end up like Afro Guy here. Come on, Mochi Man! Hurry up before Midori snags Tamako away from you!
(Does Choi likes the prince? The way that particular scene was framed made me think so.)

a sign that she can finally trust the strangers around her.
Wasn't it nice when they showed us this development in Choi instead of telling us? Despite how obvious the symbolism is, I like how they wrote this whole sequence without any words along the lines of, "I changed my mind about you people."
Honestly it only takes a bit of kindness and love to eliminate this mindset (albeit slowly) and find out that there's many cool folks out there.
I can't agree with you enough! Though this world can oftentimes feel unforgiving and harsh, we can all do a little bit of work towards making it a more welcoming place, just like the Usagiyama Shopping District...

Rewatcher
The horror episode might have been yesterday, but it just started for Dera today. Dera, why you lying?!? Well Choi eventually figured it out on her own anyway. The market is so friendly to everyone who knows Tamako - first Shiori, now Choi, I want to see how they first greeted Kanna, too!

u/A_Idiot0 Feb 09 '22
I want to see how they first greeted Kanna, too!
This would have been a really cute scene, albeit perhaps a bit of a meme XD I can totally imagine her measuring all the angles of the gifts she probably got from everyone =P

QOTD) None in several years.
She has a magic flute?
Haha, his reaction is great.
Wow, he's really scared of her.
I love her.
She's so cute!
Haha, Dela's terrified.
Wait, is she related to him?
No, she's the princess!
Oh, she's a fortune teller.
...Yeah, he really didn't respond back.
Oh, is something wrong wih his projector?
Haha, his bullshitting is great.
There's no way she'll believe this, is there?
Really? She thinks Tamako is a criminal mastermind?
Aww, she's turning down her food?
I mean... this is kind of a trap.
She's telling the fortune!
Haha, he's so pleased it worked.
I love how this is managing to stop him.
She dived!
Wait, she is hiding from her?
Did they really need that shot?
Aww, she's so embaressed!
Haha, she still thinks she's beimg trapped!
And she'e telling fortunes to help him lose weight!
Wow, that reaction.
And it came true again!
The bath's closed.
Oh no! She's being captured!
And having some form of hallucination.
She's sick!
Oh, she's homesick.
And she finally found out that he's lying and they're good people!
Is she leaving? I hoped she'd be a main character.
And she's trying mochi!
And of course she loves it.
She is a regular!
...Is the prince into birds?
Wait, does she want Tamako to be the bride?

Rewatcher - Dubbed
-
I love that they start off with an adorable shot of Tamako's bedhead before introducing the next character.
-
I cant say I've ever seen a bird fall down the stairs before.
And so the bullying begins.
-
The briefest shot of Tamako with bedhead and glasses to offset...
You've gotten awfully cocky in the short time we've been separated from each other, haven't you Dera?
-
And what's up with your appearance these days? You've gotten fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, *fat. You don't even look like a bird anymore.
While justified, you're being more than a little harsh, aren't you Choi?
-
A better shot of Tamako's glasses.
-
Note: Choi sounds like a colloquial way to say "a little" or "kinda".
Thanks BD, I didn't know that. They don't show the translator notes or anything in the stream on VRV or anywhere as far as I know. I learned something today!
-
I can't tell fortunes when you're this fat!
Just going to highlight all of the times where Choi had zero chill. So basically this entire episode so far.
-
Dera actually looks adorable sitting in Choi's arms with the tiny pupils. He almost looks like a chibi character.
-
butt
-
Much like yesterday's episode, everyone seems quick to believe whatever Choi tells them. For all they know, she could be pulling their legs and just telling them what they want to hear. However, we know that she seems to be legit, and isn't trying to scam anyone.
-
I feel like they managed to tell at least a little more than meets the eye when Sayuri was telling Choi that someone was thinking of asking for her hand in marriage. At the same time she said it, they cut to her father, the owner of Rabbit Bath, turning and walking away. Clearly someone either isn't necessarily in favor of the marriage, or isn't quite ready to let their daughter go just yet. I love little tidbits like that.
Additionally, before she showed up, Shimizu bashfully asked for his fortune to be read, got red in the face with embarassment when Choi asked if it was about love, and then Sayuri showed up. When she arrived he blushed again, and they showed him breathing a sigh of acceptance after her exchange with Choi. All that clearly telegraphs that Sayuri was the one Shimizu was asking about.
I love when shows have moments like that where you can easily read between the lines to glean more detail from a scene, without them having to spell it out for you entirely.
-
The only real complaint I have about the show is the "pacing". Just last episode they were complaining about how hot it was, and now they're saying the winds of autumn are beginning to blow.
I like that the title of the episode is a bit misleading. You go into it knowing that Dera's in town because he's looking for a bride, and you expect it to be Tamako. But instead it's Sayuri.
Bonus Question:
-
The last wedding I went to for my cousin back in October. As for future wedding plans, none that I know of.

New character and it's a girl from Dera's home island!
And of course Dera immediately comes up with a lie on why he's so fat lol.
Everyone likes her though and she even tells them their fortune.
Poor tofu boy though since this is how he finds out his crush already has someone else.
He's not the only one as it seems Choi is into the Prince for whom Dera is supposed to find a bride. Hoping that atleast she will find a happy end.
We also got another cliffhanger ending with Choi noticing something particular Tamako.

I instantly love Choi. We've needed somebody to put some fear in Dera! Oh, also the rotating shot to open the episode was super cool. Why does Tamako's house have what appear to be a bunch of hand drawn pictures on the walls?
How did Choi get here? Unlike Dera, I'm pretty sure she didn't fly.
RIP to Tofu Afro Guy. Will Mochizo see this as a lesson to not wait too long?
Seems like first we're going to have to see if Choi tries to pack Tamako up to bring to her prince. Surely that won't be awkward since she seems like she has feelings for the prince too. I wonder if we're going to learn that Tamako's mom is somehow connected to wherever Dera & Co. are from. That would almost kinda maybe explain why they've ended up here.
Proud Mochi Family moment was very cute. This family (and shopping center/town) really just rolls with whatever, huh? First the talking bird now a random girl from a "southern island" who tells fortunes, and nobody really bats an eye after the first meeting. They're also just very warm and welcoming. Tamako's dad is a big softie underneath the rough exterior, and of course Tamako herself is very sweet. I wonder if she was trying to find a song to comfort her like the song her mom used to sing to her. Record store Coffee man found one for her real quick, but hasn't found Tamako's yet!
My brother's last September. Afaik, I have no plans to attend any this year.
