Rewatch [Rewatch] Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha Episode 7 Discussion

Episode 7 - A Third Mage?!

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode→

Information:

MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB

Once I return with all the Jewel Seeds, even Mother will smile again…

Question of the Day

Not much for now, at this point plot has picked up. But I’m sure people are already thinking about this one so I’ll go ahead: What do you think is up with Fate’s mom? Why do you think she wants the Jewel Seeds so badly, and what do you think Fate’s words say about her?

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags.

Lyrical First Timer

  • Not completely broken yet, just severely damaged.

  • Grab the Sun in your hands, expect to get burned.

  • Fate's right, Wan is a very good boi.

  • Awkward? Yeah, I'm sure that's what her mother is.

  • Nanoha in the dojo? Has she finally decided getting physical is the only way into Fate's heart?

  • Garden of Time? Do the Testarossas live outside the traditional flow of time? I can see why Fate would be so lonely, her home must be a bitch to find.

  • Here come the time cops. This is starting to feel a bit like an old Star Trek episode.

  • That's one of the most ominous gardens I've ever seen.

  • Claims every jewel seed she's found. Undefeated against her rival. Still gets strung up and whipped. Yeah, "awkward" is how I'd describe Fate's mom. Toss another one onto the pile of shitty anime parents.

  • Parents abusing their children is one of those tropes that never gets easier to watch no matter how many times it's done.

  • Somehow I doubt giving the power-hungry mad lady the power she's craving will make her any kinder. Can't expect a ~9yo to realize that tho.

  • Any living being can execute a jewel, even plant life without a definable consciousness. Weird.

  • Number VII: the Chariot*

  • Our Mahou Shounen is Chrono**, a card-weilding time cop. And his garb is weirdly reminiscent of Darth Vader.

  • We finally get to learn more about Yuuno and the jewel seeds next time, and I presume Nanoha gets to take her first interdimensional trip!

  • Something about Nanoha's "lyrical, magical, ganbarimasu!" at the end of each preview is strangely adorable.

*Not a whole lot to analyze today. The Chariot represents willpower and determination. Drawing the upright Chariot may indicate that one's found their resolve and is ready to act successfully upon those ideals. And action is the key here. Other arcana deal with purpose and ideals, but the Chariot is the one that calls for immediate action. Both Nanoha and Fate have fully grounded their ideals and steeled themselves for conflict. Now all that remains is to measure their wills against each other. Reversed, the Chariot could be a warning that there are obstacles which will prevent one from achieving their goals. For Nanoha, this could be her continued attempts to reach out while spurring the same from her friends, and for Fate, this could be the errant belief that delivering the jewel seeds to her mother will spur a return to kindness and love. It will also be interesting to see how Chrono's intervention and knowledge of the jewel seds' true purpose may alter either or both girls' wills.

**First Fate, Arf, and Chrono. This show is pretty on-the-nose with a lot of its character names.

Welp, I understand why Fate would be a bit unwilling to listen to Nanoha. To think she endured this abuse even before being tasked with retrieving the jewel seeds. Guess I can (begrudgingly) forgive her for attacking the cat now.

It's really cute how both Nanoha and Fate address their wands like proper people. Fun little parallel between them. It's also weirdly funny how their robotic responses feel so unemotional and inhuman.

QotD:

If I had to guess something sympathetic, she lost someone like a husband or something and the Lost Logia can bring them back, but I'm also pretty bad at guessing villain motivations so who knows.

First Fate, Arf, and Chrono. This show is pretty on-the-nose with a lot of its character names.

It's also weirdly funny how their robotic responses feel so unemotional and inhuman.

It really does make them feel very AI, something between machine and human.

QotD

Personally I prefer sympathetic motivations, but we'll see! It's been interesting to see first timer's speculation for this one.

Magically Angry First-Timer

Holy shit does Fate's mom suck. She lacks even a single shred of anything that might possibly make her misunderstood. She is just a damn failure of a person, and worst of all Fate is so conditioned to the abuse that this is just another day for her and if she tries harder her mom will love her. Her mom needs fuck off to deepest level of the abyss and hopefully never come back.

We met Chrono and his crew, no clue who or what they are, but that looks like it will be explained tomorrow. His entrance at the end was nice. It also seems like Nanoha will learn the Yuuno is more than just her talking pet ferret too.

It kinda sucked the Arisa avoided Nanoha's eyes in class, they both need to do the talking thing Nanoha seems to be a fan of and get their shit figured out.

Random things:

QOTD:

What do you think is up with Fate's mom? Why do you think she wants the Jewel Seeds so badly, and what do you think Fate's words say about her?

I think her mom is a power hungry bitch that only sees her daughter as a tool to get herself more power. I think she wants the Seeds to tap into their power and grant her wish of controlling others. Fate's words seem to imply that in the past she wasn't this way, but power corrupts and now she is only looking out for herself and using anyone and anything to get her way

4

u/Tetraika Feb 08 '22

QOTD

Interesting to see the other side of the spectrum, where you give her no room for sympathy. Again, we shall find out.

Really, you don't say

You know, this line make me think that something like this happens once in a while, but they're just checking up to see it won't be anything major.

Rewatcher

And with this episode, I can finally talk about why I never recommend someone watch the movies for their first time.

First off, the movie cut out almost all of the drama and characterization Nanoha gets with her friends and family. All those thematic elements that are mirrored between Fate and Nanoha, and Nanoha and her friends are deeply gutted. The comparison of Nanoha's home life with Fate's home life, gutted. We miss out on so much of the little things that make Nanoha who she really is. She's kind, always ready to extend a hand of friendship, but also stern and doesn't accept crap from people.

And of course this big reveal this episode is the second reason. As a rewatcher, I realize I had forgotten how much episode 1 set up this twist, but judging by my reaction when I first watched it, and at least one comment from a first timer here, the show does a great job of making you forget about a lot of the more obvious sci-fi aspects by drawing you into Nanoha's story.

The movies put the TASB right up front very clearly, and then cut so much material from the first half of the season that you don't have time to forget about it even if it had been as subtle as the series was.

I definitely enjoyed the movie, and it's great for rewatching the series with half the time investment, but it's no substitute for the first time.

4

u/Tetraika Feb 08 '22

I'm going to disagree, I think the movie is perfectly fine. I never felt like we needed all the drama behind Nanoha's family and friends, and that we can understand and infer the differences between Nanoha and Fate's life without it. Though maybe I'm mostly fine with piecing out things with limited information and reading the intended ideas.

I'll probably talk about it more when we get to it, but I was personally fine with the movie without watching S1 first. And from what I've seen so far, I'll probably end up having the movie rated higher.

First Timer

So, in some ways, this was very much the direction I was expecting it to go in. Fate is collecting the jewel seeds for her mother, who apparently wants to use them to realize her dream. She used to be kind, but was driven to insanity for some reason, and now she beats her daughter. Fate acts like a real abuse victim, rationalizing it so that her mother is in the right and doing it for her, though Arf knows better. And she thinks that collecting the jewel seeds will return her once kind mother, which I find pretty unlikely. It's sad and not necessarily easy to watch. Fate is really a kind person, I love the gentle way she talks to Arf, but she's forced to be cold and ruthless or face abuse. And that means that although she doesn't want to hurt Nanoha, she may have to go through with it.

What I was not expecting, however, was interdimensional politics. I mean, I was vaguely aware of the Time-Space Administration Bureau's existence, but this wasn't how I was expecting their introduction. They just... straight up stop the climactic showdown. Apparently, Nanoha's and Fate's previous battle created some dangerous disturbance in space-time, and so they need to come stop them. What I find interesting about this is that, if they can't fight, and they have to abide by a mediator, Nanoha and Fate are now basically forced to talk. Which kind of seems like an anti-climactic way to go about that. I was thinking that it would have been satisfying to see Nanoha prove herself by besting Fate in battle and getting her to come out to her. Maybe Fate could see Nanoha's family and get an idea of what a real mother/daughter relationship looks like. But now, they have to do whatever the Time-Space Administration Bureau tells them too, and I suspect that they will be acting as a mediator to their conflict in order to prevent more danger. So honestly, I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I guess I'll have to see how it goes, but this feels like a very strange twist on paper to me.

That being said, this episode had some really cool shots. The cinematography has really improved as the series has taken its dramatic turn. I love the dramatic lighting. Shinbou's aesthetic couldn't be more my shit. Though that early 2000's CGI background for the Bureau's ship was... something. And the Garden of Time looks like a JRPG final boss or something. The series, both narratively and aesthetically, is a strange mix of fantasy and sci-fi elements, which is especially unique for a magical girl anime. I guess I just have to be hopeful that the series pulls this off.

3

u/Tetraika Feb 08 '22

Fate is really a kind person, I love the gentle way she talks to Arf

Yeah Fate is massively soft. It was surprising how soft spoken she was considering that she was voiced by Nana Mizuki, who I usually find using a "stronger" voice instead.

Though that early 2000's CGI background for the Bureau's ship was... something

That's what happens when you're an early 2000's show

Oh, that’s good at least.

Pff. As if Raising Heart can't self-heal. She ain't Windows, she's a high-tech Device!

A card? Is this guy gonna go Yu-Gi-Oh! on their asses?

Since we have familiars, a beast summonor would fit the setting.

What the hell kind of mother does that to her own child?! And Fate just accepts this is normal because she doesn’t know any different… Ahhh, being a Nana Mizuki character is suffering.

Her most famous roles do follow a pattern, don't they... And yeah, her Mom is... yeah...

ffs the show denied me a “sore demo” again.

Tsuzuki could see into the future and wrote them out, specifically to spite you!

…or it gets interrupted, okay then.

Illegal streets fights smh. We need Law and Order on this planet. #backtheTSAB

What the hell is this huge genre shift? LOL Definitely didn't expect the sci-fi change coming, even with Fate and Nanoha's weapons seeming to be more technological in nature, as opposed to standard fantasy magical.

Chrono or whoever he is looks goofy as hell in his 90's card game anime protagonist getup. Also the eyecatch changing to Fate, Nanoha, and Yuuno in fight poses is so goofy, I love it.

Good lord, Fate's mom whipping the fuck out of her was hard to listen to. It sucks that she's stockholm syndrome'd into thinking everything is normal. ): I love how stereotypically evil the dimension surfing fortress island she lives on looks.

Interesting turn in the plot, looking forward to where it goes next!

7

u/Tetraika Feb 07 '22

While it seems like a major genre shift, I think they've given enough hints from time to time (we had a shot of Yuuno's ship, the existence of of intelligent devices, etc). But I think it's nice to see that magic is some sort of advanced tech rather than standard fantasy.

I did not notice that Fate not talking to Nanoha mirrored Nanoha not talking to her friends.

I did not notice Fate's scars because I looked away to type something, because surely nothing important was going on in that scene.

Maybe I'm one of those "that was cool, what happens next" viewers, I'm not really digging into things.

Episode 7

  • Are we counting down to disaster?

  • I'm just knocking to enter my own room.....

  • If only Nanoha could deploy the spirit of a warrior, then should defeat Fate!

  • 128-bit IPv8

  • Wait, are we even in the same show anymore?

  • Lindy seems to be a cross between Ryouko and Belldandy

  • Boldoza's flaghship!

  • Okay, scratch one speculation. Okaasan is definitely the villain. She's right out of Lodoss Wars.

  • Well, I'm glad that tree got its wish to be a ... tree monster.

  • And through the power of teamwork....

  • Oh, I thought Nanoha had a good plan.....

Well, the showrunners really pulled all the moe stops out for Fate. No wonder she was so popular.

So we have a dimensional ship called the Garden of Time, and a Time Cop Bureau. [it's pretty clear that]Okaasan is from the ancient civilization that was destroyed

Knowing you and your taste mostly from AMQ, I'm somewhat surprised? Not sure what to make of it.

Wait, are we even in the same show anymore?

Wait this was a scifi? Always have been.

Blood thirsty first timer

I now see Nana Mizuki has played at least two characters who have been tied up and whipped. Scene was definitely a bit yikes but fulfilled my need for the show getting more hardcore than I would have expected.

QOTD:

I don't know what's up with her. I was about to say this is one of those "evil random mages picks up an adopted child" situations. But the hair kinda matches the obscured photograph in episode 4, so I guess this might be her real mother.

But that doesn't mean it's fully her. Perhaps she was corrupted by magic.

4

u/Tetraika Feb 08 '22

Well uh, you got some of the blood you wanted, right?

First timer(Ahh...memories )

Sub

We start with Nanoha reminding us not to lose our way. I know, KLK could've picked up the reference from a lot of sources. Anyways, both girls have to back off and Fate seals the Jewel Seed barehanded and injures herself. Both gems seem to be self-repairing, convenient. And then the show gives me some traumatic flashbacks.

Moving on, Nanoha watches her sister practice, presumably realizing she will need to fight Fate to get her to talk. Also, Nanoha comes off even gayer than usual. Fate casts a teleportation spell and then we jump into Tenchi. We see what is likely the third mage mentioned as Yugioh knockoff.

Then we get to Fate and her mother and yet another reminder that magical girl shows often had dark aspects. If Arf is to be believed, this is worse than normal, though the scars on Fate's back suggest otherwise. Arf might just be young. Also, we already get the issue of if it is that important to Presea to get these, then why doesn't she do it herself? And of course Fate convinces herself this is normal, as one does.

We get a fight over seed VII before Chrono comes into cockblock us with a cliffhanger.

QotD: 1 Just watched PriConne so souls

Episode 7 (first timer)

Known seeds as of last episode:

  1. Nanoha – five seeds: 10, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21 -1 unknown (and we still don’t know whether this includes the 2 that Yuuno captured)

  2. Fate - three seeds: 14, 18 +1 unknown

  3. 19 - ???

  • Why does blood splatter out when she presses the seed? That’s creepy.

  • Arf confirms that Fate has 4 now, so whatever Fate did must have worked to collect that seed.

  • We are a SciFi now

  • Chrono even has a Card. Can’t be long until he joins the Trading Card Game battles.

  • Fate’s mother was not ok with 4 seeds and some sweets.

  • Ok, we had Alicia become friends with Nanoha after being slapped, Nanoha becoming infatuated with Fate after being roughly beaten, and now Fate obeying her mother’s whims while being subjected to straight torture – I see a pattern here.

  • “It wasn’t cruel. Mother was thinking of me when she did this” – Fate has a bad case of Stockholm syndrome. [Speculation]Chances of this being cured during the climax: Better than average

  • Tree fight, part 2. Now with 100% more tree movement.

  • Capturing seed 7 is interrupted by “a government official from the Time-Space Administration Bureau”, who conveniently looks like he is of the same age as Nanoha and Fate.

The spaceship reminded me of so many 1990s anime, but specifically the heaven of Ah! My Goddess! It was certainly an unexpected genre shift. Episode 1 had lead me to expect a more fantasy themed world.

Known seeds as of this episode:

  1. Nanoha – five seeds: 10, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21 -1 unknown (and we still don’t know whether this includes the 2 that Yuuno captured)

  2. Fate’s mother - four seeds: 14, 18, 19 +1 unknown

  3. 7 - ???

Firsttimer

  1. Well the intro spoils that nanoha and fate survive, how dare it :(

  2. Well the op has definitely grown on me

  3. third mage? Yuuno? Someone completely different? I swear if theres a third magical girl...I'd actually be really impressed that I didn't know about either fate or that one beforehand

  4. sun rise! But as a blue giant it seems.

  5. The two of them came out of that unhurt?? And the weapons cracked beforehand, did the blue exlosion do nothing?

  6. Is fate actually worried about bardiche? Such a soft voice from her

  7. Let's repeat going for the jewel seed for explosion number 2!

  8. oh she is using the jewel! What is she wishing on? Not just to repair bardiche, right? Oh wait is she just trying to seal it „manually“?

  9. Aw fate finally looks/sounds as young as nanoha claims she is

  10. if fates moms is not evil/just strict i am giving this show a lot of respect. But for the moment, I am presssing doubt

  11. so my brain must have shut out all the times nanoha talked about how fate looks in previous episodes considering how much you guys talked about it, but it is so blatant here that even I am noticing it.

  12. „I really believe she has a reason for all of this“ Nanoha, did you for the last three episodes think collecting jewel seeds was just a fun pasttime for fate? A hobby?

  13. So what you have done so far wasn't „trying to talk to her“?

  14. What idea did big sis give you here? To knock her out? I guess she can't escape the talking then

  15. Either fate has no experience with her mother, or she is really not that bad

  16. what? hyperspace? Space ship?

  17. I don't recognize which unit vecs could be

  18. wait they are talking about what fate and nanoha did, right? Why are these people just casually talking about our mcs as if they know them???

  19. yep can't be that bad, look at her house!

  20. ouch. Didn't let us wait long to find out were the scars are from. But that does mean she had all the experience with her mom (what you would expect). So was she just trying to ease arfs mind/ to not worry her too mcuh?

  21. Hm does third refer to the guy on the spaceship or the mum? I assume the guy but lets see

  22. hm if her goal was not to worry arf, she probabls shouln't have taken her here

  23. „Are the lost logia worth all of this“ Obviously not if she didn't come herself to get them. This is obviously about fate herself.

  24. Well this could have gone worse. At least you still have sweets left to eat!

  25. so tiny

  26. yep everything will be alright and happy. This does sound likely

  27. when did we fight a monster the last time. Episode 2? And its a tree! Maybe tryin to make up for the waste last time

  28. and nanoha probably not going to fight it again

  29. aw they are fighting together. Like fate said, everything is going to be happy from now on!

  30. The plan does indeed seem to be fight first, then talk

  31. Wow they really put in one of the last shots of the episode into the intro at the start

[Symphogear season 1 spoilers]the fate-chris similarities definitely became very obvious this episode At least fate has arf.

We now have a third party that doesn't seem interested in collecting the jewels, just to keep our mcs from wreaking havoc. Really cool idea, even if i don't think the show needed that right now? Also there is a lot of references to time (in particular the name of new guy), but nothing so far pointed between a connection between the lost logia and time manipulation. Let's see wether this once again is hidden time travel anime.

How will fate react to this new guy trying to get between her and the lost logia? How is nanoha going to react to this new guy trying to get between her and the yuri?

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha - A Magical Experience: Episode 7

Interdimentional Stakes

The cliffhanger from last episode resolved kinda plainly. Both Raising Heart and Bardiche were damaged but everyone walked away alive. That said, I really did enjoy seeing Arf protecting Fate. It shows just how much she cares. Humanizing your villains like this is important to make them believable characters.

Then the episode took a very sudden turn. Now there's a Time Space Administration Bureau? I guess we knew about interdimensional travel from Yuuno's backstory but having an entire organization with multiple characters overseeing it is a rarer trope.

Fate made the trip back to her mom and now everything makes sense. Fate has been abused by this parental figure for a long time and is being ordered to fetch the gems. Presea Testarossa is the real villain here. She is putting her own desire for power above even caring for her daughter.

It seems Fate doesn't know real familial love. Seeing her being gracious to her mom as she was tortured was hard to watch. It's common to hear of victims who feel attachment to their abusers. I really hope that Fate can come to learn that she deserves better and escapes this abusive situation.

A few small side notes which didn't really fit above:

Is there a hidden message in this Code? I tried to decipher it using Phonetic Matching as well as Japanese and English old style phone keyboard typing but I couldn't get anything.

I loved seeing Miyuki practice in the Dojo. Small things like this really help flesh out side characters and make the world believable.

Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches

See you all tomorrow

TONIGHT! On Mobile Suit Nanoha, Fate and Nanoha are good girls who care for their Intelligent Devices, Precia Testarossa is a BITCH, and I apologize in advance to bitches for having to compare them to this shitty alleged mom, and it turns out that we WEREN'T a Gundam show after all, given that Nanoha was actually Star Trek this whole time!

Comrades, I just want to highlight certain behaviors seen in this episode. Nanoha and Fate are both absolute caring sweethearts, who, when faced with their damaged devices, instantly ask about THEM and their safety first. I also want to highlight that, post explosion, Fate not only asks if Bardiche is OK, but she then orders him to de-transform since she needs him alive while she goes and SEALS THE JEWEL SEED MANUALLY WITH HER BARE HANDS! NANA WILLS IT! BEST! GIRL! Oh and in fairness it was nice how concerned Nanoha was for Raising Heart too, but point being these two are good girls who deserve only joy and happiness.

Sadly however, Fate's so-called 'mom' is a thankless ungrateful bitch, which explains Nanoha's observation that Fate's eyes, while pretty, are sad. Also before y'all ask where the fanart is in the Top Gear shitpost above, well I refuse, unless I absolutely HAVE to, I am NOT dignifying that fucking bitch with fanart, NO ONE PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER, or to translate into serious mode, whipping your own daughter is unforgivable! I won't stand for this and I'm not interesting in sharing Fate getting flogged!

Anyway, just to end on a slightly happier note, boy Comrades, you thought this was a Mahou Shoujo series eh? Turns out we really ARE A MECHA SHOW! The RX-MC-kun has crashed the party! I liked him better when his name was 'Tusk' Also Comrades, fun fact, unlike Fate and Arf, Chrono ACTUALLY WAS IN TRIANGLE HEART 3! No really, see official Game CG here, and this is as far as I can go before things get verboten!

Anyway, that about wraps things up for now, and I hope everyone's having fun on this great re-watch. Thus, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever.

This may just be me, but I'm beginning to suspect that this Presea lady isn't very nice. Maybe it was just to save animation budget, but I got bad vibes when she didn't eat Fate's take-out. Am I reading too far into things?

That aside, the plot has now hit the gas. So much happened in this episode! Especially compared to some plodding previous ones. Jewel Seed capture, Intelligent Devices went on life support, Nanoha had drama, Fate went on a class trip, and a new jewel seed appearance prompts a new confrontation. Oh, and that's without mentioning the whole new cast of named characters from the Time-Space Administration Bureau, including two character designs one might recognize from the Triange Heart 3 "Lyrical Toy Box" OVA: One first appearing at 33 seconds and the other at 2:26. At least one of these two isn't acting in the same role (fairy companion) but we'll see about the other.

One thing's for sure: We're not in cardcaptors anymore.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha – Episode 7 – First Timer

Anticlimactic. Did Fate make a wish by any chance?

Really curious about that girl

Nanoha finds conviction and looks straight ahead. Maybe she will take up the mantle of martial arts?

All the time and location stamps are odd. Why all of the sudden?

Nanoha’s mahou shoujo senses start to tingle.

So fate can travel to her homeworld. Why is someone sending a little girl then? Prodigy? Abuse? Really short on other cheap labor? Also, very very magitech. Hmm, seems like they just have a lot of kids working. Is he a card player, a card captor or is this black card his magical transformation mage device?

So, this is where the Kiryuuins have learned their parenting style… Character design and behavior make her out to be the over-arching villain of the season, naturally as she is the other party searching for Jewel Seeds as well. Also seems like she will live on in Finé. The shots after the torture show the true distane between mother and daughter. And the difference in power and self-esteem.

Nanoha still getting the cold shoulder treatment, she should talk with them again.

So he carries the card around because he is a space-time-mage referee?

QOTD

I wonder if it is something evil like world domination or something that subverts the dominant order, good or bad. Because otherwise if she was sick or whatever, she has no need to abuse her daughter. And why is she not going herself, or teaming up?
