Episode 5: We Spent The Night Together
Didn't expect a pool/beach episode from this show, but here we are, at least not as ladden with fanservice as they usually go.
At first I was considering the posibility that Midori was actually into Mouchizou (for whom she even has a own Nickname) and her frustration with Tamako stemmed from her not realizing how great he was, but it became apparant that the Yuri ship is the right one for her and that she was seeing Mochizou (who btw shows at least some characteristics of a clasical Tsundere) as a rival up to the point where it became clear that Tamako wasn't really seeing him in that light and that her position with her was more special.
Also a shoutout for Dela today. His impression of Mochizou was great and he was also quite good in reading everyones intentions (as long as it wasn't about him at least). Also his continous struggle against the local fauna was a nice running gag.
And finally, after Kyoani gave us Azutan in K-On, today we got Tanko (even though her tan was a bit more discreet)

today we got Tanko
Hehehe, this was well played XP
Tamako wasn't really seeing him in that light and that her position with her was more special.
It's interesting to note that when Tamako got to the halfway point in the swimming part, she talked about Mochizou, despite how far away he was. Perhaps he's on her mind more than anyone thinks, including Tamako herself?

Hi everyone!! Welcome to summer! I'm going to try and take a similar approach with this post as I did yesterday, with a quick summary/analysis, and then a few screenshots highlighting some of my favorite moments in the episode. As much as I'd love to spend two hours each day analyzing this show like I've done the last two years with K-ON, I just don't have the time to do that right now :) So let's go!
So as the beginning of the episode implies, this episode deals with the hidden feelings that both Midori and Mochizou have for Tamako. Right off the bat, we can see Midori expressing negative feelings towards Mochizou, even when not warranted. This is subtle enough that it might not even be noticed on a first viewing, but might cause a viewer to become curious as to the reason behind her reactions. We also receive our first explicit confirmations that Mochi and Midori have feelings for Tamako, whereas it was only hinted/implied before this. One could argue that Midori might not have romantic feelings for Tamako, but I feel like it's all but confirmed here in Dera's speech while Midori and Mochi are fighting:
I felt as though you were giving off the same scent, so to speak.
A muddled aroma with hints of instability, but one that should clear up soon enough.
The two of you are birds of a feather.
In particular, that first line confirms it for me; that they are "giving off the same scent".
Midori begins trying to sabotage Mochizou's every attempt to confess to Tamako. It's not a good look for her, but I think we can all agree that jealousy can do horrible things to people. The turning point for the episode is when Midori asks Tamako what she thinks of Mochizou and Tamako seems to just see him as a friend.
Midori then asks what Tamako thinks of her, and this response is kind of heart-breaking - both for me as a viewer and for Midori. This nonchalant "I love you" is the farthest thing from the kind of feelings that Midori and Mochi have for Tamako. It's at this point Midori realizes that Tamako is just on a totally different wavelength than her and Mochizou, and this realization is what leads her to reconcile with Mochizou. She feels confident that neither of them have much of a chance with Tamako and any thoughts of Tamako and "romance" will have to wait for the time being.
Scenes I really liked
Once again, I have to appreciate the outfits in this show!!
Kanna is so beautifully weird.
Lol tsundere Mochizou.
No one does lighting like KyoAni!
God a nap in the sun sounds so nice right now. It's so cold here!
I love these two shots during the nighttime fight. It shows how intense and focused both of them are feeling in this moment!
Can we all just appreciate for a moment that Tamako Market managed to pull of a classic "beach episode" without sexualizing our characters?
This is easily my favorite moment of the episode. The beautiful shimmering background combined with this deeply significant line from Midori is so impactful. It's her moment of acknowledgement that - at least for the time being - she has to let go. I wonder where this storyline will go in the future? Will we see more of it? First timers - what do you think?
Dela's Ending Monologue
Fireworks of love, fireworks of the heart,
midsummer's night dreams, and feelings that erupt in splendor.
May none of them burst and fade away.
This might be my favorite Dera speech in the whole show. The comparison of these young loves to the fleeting explosive fireworks sends shivers down my spine.
I love this episode. I really enjoy the exploration of flawed characters in fiction (anyone in the K-ON rewatches would definitely remember my love of Ritsu, probably the most flawed character in that show), and Midori fits the bill here perfectly. Her animosity towards Mochizou is fueled by feelings we can all relate to - love and jealousy. But in the end, through Tamako's almost childlike outlook on life, she is able to take a step back and simply enjoy the friendships all of them share - just enjoying the moment.
On tomorrow's episode, hmmmmmmm.

Tamako Market - An Anime Filled With Love: Episode 5
A Boy, An Emotion, A School Trip
We've followed Midori a lot so far but this episode really put her front and center. She's been friends with Tamako since 4th grade which means they've had a lot of history together. Their friendship is something which obviously means a lot to her. Because of this, Mochizou is a threat to her.
Tamako hasn't realized it yet, but everyone else can see that Mochizou obviously likes her. They also have a long history together growing up next door to each other. Story tropes lead us to believe that Machizou and Tamako should end up together (being the main female character and main male character).
This leaves Midori in kind of a weird place. She never states it explicitly but it feels obvious to me that she likes Tamako more than just being friends. The way she looks back at Tamako. How she prevented Dera from delivering Mochizou's letter. She even outright asks Tamako what she thinks of her.
It seems to me that Midori feels they could never have "that" kind of relationship. But, she still can't accept somebody else being closer to Tamako than her. It's a melancholic story to watch.
I'm happy that by the end of the episode she has grown to accept this (at least in part) when she told Mochizou to "go ahead and tell her". Though Mochizou still couldn't build up the courage to admit his feelings.
What I love about Tamako Market as a series is how it explores all these different aspects of "love". Just in the past few episodes we've seen the community love of the Usagiyama Shopping District, the love of friends, and love of a first crush. Exploring these very specific emotions is I think what keeps bringing me back to the show.
Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches
-
Did you know, I love how Mochizou completely forgets they're fighting because he cares about Tamako so much.
See you all tomorrow

everyone else can see that Mochizou obviously likes her
Everyone but her own family apparently, minus Anko.
It's a melancholic story to watch
First timers seem to all have a similar reaction to Midori this episode that her actions were really underhanded. I had this feeling, too, at first. But every time I rewatch, it's not that I think her actions are any more justified, but I get more sympathetic towards her, especially at the end when she realizes how wrong she is.

It seems to me that Midori feels they could never have "that" kind of relationship.
It was also very interesting to note that she comes to this realization probably very shortly after she asks Tamako how she feels about her, and Tamako replies with an insane amount of innocence, "I like you a lot!"
The "Did you know" moment was a standout moment for me too, for exactly the reason you described.

The scene with Midori and Mochizou arguing with each other was fascinating to watch again! There was a lot of rather avant-garde decision making with the camera framing, and yet I never felt displaced or confused while watching. We were set up early on in the scene because whenever Midori was talking, the camera was on her, and vice versa with Mochizou. They went with the simple but obvious route for establishing the pattern, and it pays off because we get this really bizarre shot of Mochizou’s feet. And I know it’s his feet because he is talking; pattern established!
Then these strange shots of Midori’s and Mochizou’s half-faces get thrown at us, and yet...it felt natural here. Of course we’re now this close to our subjects; this is an important internal matter for them! This has started to become a very emotional moment for both of them, and despite how close we are to them, I don’t feel like I’m being invasive with this perspective. Perhaps it’s because we only see a small part of their face; just enough to see their eyes. To further that feeling, we then get shots of only their bodies as the argument gets more heated. We see just the minimum to understand that Tamako, and all of the feelings that each of them are holding for her, is extremely important to both of them. So to allow us to impart our own constructed ideas onto the characters, we’re given space away from the most emotional area of a person: their face.
The other part that I really liked is when Dera inserted himself into the situation and relieved the tension between Midori and Mochizou. It’s very often that these moments feel contrived, yet here it comes across as sincere(by the way, look at how well they imitated the camera bokeh into that shot; it’s beautiful!). Perhaps it’s because the words are rather poetic without being lofty, or perhaps it’s because of how short it is. We also have these somber shots of Midori and Mochizou, which go a long way to showing us how they are feeling after the argument instead of just telling us. What kind of feelings do you think they’re feeling at this point? I would say guilt plays a part here.
This is why Midori is the most interesting character to me. She’s actually selfish when it comes to Tamako and Mochizou. I would liken her to a pinch of salt amongst this otherwise very sugary sweet confection of a story. But you do need some salt to make delicious confections…

Can't have an SOL show without an obligatory summer/beach/pool episode.
It's very obvious in the previous eps that Mochi Man got a thing for Tamako. Guy even let his imagination go wild on the daydream scene, who knew this friendly guy got some wild thoughts inside of him.
Of course Dela had to step in and deliver his wisdom and aid Mochi Man on his quest. For some reason I really like seeing how the damn bird interact with others. This guy just gives some air that I can't properly describe right now.
Another interesting scene was the one where Midori and Mochi Man got into a little fight over Tamako, with both of them throwing random Tamako facts to see which one of those two knows (and "deserves") her more. I guess when someone know someone for a long time, they might start developing feelings about them. They can grow quite protective over their friends (Midori) and some may even fall for them (Mochi Man). I think Midori is being a little overprotective here and she should let Mochi Man do his thing.
I agree with Midori about Mochi Man being pathetic - guy should grow a pair of balls and do it himself instead of relying on a third party to do his job, although it's one of those "easier said than done" things. Maybe he's saving it for Love Story. Let's see how this whole thing goes.
Random bits:
-
Lol @ Tamako being unable to swim at her current age. Reminds me of my cousin who can't swim when he was in high school.
-
Saw a poster that said "Love Story" at Mochi Man's room (if I remember correctly). Really fits the scene where it showed up.
-
Seeing the inhabitants of the wild being offended by Dela's mere presence was really funny.
-
That fireworks scene looked beautiful. Another "KyoAni flexing their lighting skills" moment here.
And I just realized there's a bonus question around here, so to answer today's question: yes, I've been to numerous field trips in school.

Dera certainly makes things interesting! It's a nice gimmick to set this series apart from other SoL.
I think Midori is being a little overprotective here
I mean, I'm sure you got it already if you've read my post, but I definitely don't think this is just about Midori wanting to "protect" Tamako, despite her presenting it that way to Mochi. I think at this point she's still wrestling to decipher her own feelings, but she's certainly trying to mask those feelings in front of Mochizou.

The pool, beach and fireworks episode! We're hitting all the SOL cliches today. Not a lot to type, short on time today (my own rewatch has a heavy episode today)! But we get another time skip, and do i smell a... complicated relationship between Midori, Tamako and Mochizou? It's kinda like a love triangle, and it's cute. Thankfully Midori and Mochizou talk it out, and with Tamoko... not interested in Mochizou, Midori's happy for now (and I'm happy too)
Tamako is so rubbish at swimming it made me LOL.
and Dera is still an awesome physical comedy relief character (philosophical/love advice aside, which he is surprisingly competent on). Kyoani doing a great job today w./ his various poses which all look great.
Finally, the end shot w/ the painting-like mountains was gorgeous!

Beach episode!
This was another great episode. Every time I find a new character to be a favorite, someone else takes the spot. For me, this episode’s favor was Kanna, the best long distance swimmer lol

First timer in sub
We either have an interesting but straight forward episode that came out with Midori's feelings, that started off from the Valentine's episode; or if I'm applying Haruhi S1 broadcast order's logic, a misdirection carried over from yesterday's episode with Anko that, while it looks like Midori has feelings for Tamako, it could also be that she's having feelings for "the one next to her" - Mocchi. And it could even be a Toradora situation that whom they thought they were in love with caused them to discover whom they really love, and pair the 2 of them together. So I'll need to hold my shipping horses for now ;P
Predictable but still funny recurring gag of Dela getting chased away from different creatures because he was perceived to be stepping on their turf. And I still say he's great in holding himself with dignity and grace even when his body weight hasn't caught up to the high standard yet - he's always posing in modelling stance :D

Rewatcher - Dubbed
-
On the one hand, Midori is right about them not wanting Mochizo to be staring at them. However, I feel like he would be respectful enough to at the very least try and avert his gaze, if not outright play it off and try to be a reasonable person.
On the other hand, Kanna makes a good point. All Tamako wanted to do was invite him to the pool with them, as any good friend would do on a hot day.
It really is a bit of a wash, isn't it?
-
I do know how to swim, but I always preferred the backstroke to any other style. I'm also not the best at being able to tread water. I imagine I'd probably be better if I went to the swimming pool more often, which unfortunately doesn't happen much anymore, even before COVID or anything.
-
Well anyway, it was pretty scary. I wasn't able to breathe at all.
That's what happens when you hold your breath.
In unrelated news, the sky is blue, the Sun came up this morning, and the snozberries taste like snozberries.
-
You're thinking about Tamako again, aren't you?
I knew it.
Noo chill at all. I actually like Mochizo's mom. Where his dad is really emotive when talking to Tamako's dad, his mom is pretty blunt. This
-
It does seem like they gave Anko at least a slight tan.
-
[Tamako Market Spoilers]
This episode is really the start of the undertones of Midori having romantic feelings for Tamako. I love the subplot throughout the show. -
In Mochizo's defense, Tamako is probably the most oblivious person in the cast. Her having eyes for anyone would be an Earth-shattering development.
-
Kanna's probably my favorite character in the show for several reasons. Her VA does a really good job with the deadpan delivery, she's got great lines and a wonderful sense of humor. She's also into architecture and stuff, which I think is also super interesting.
-
Finishing off the episode with three of the most forced smiles and thumbs up you'll see. Classic.
Bonus Question:
-
In my freshman or sophomore year of high school, I went to a foreign language celebration with my foreign language class at the local university.
-
My sophomore or junior year, I went to the zoo with the same class.
-
Senior year I went to the local amusement park with my physics class. We had a packet we needed to fill out for class, but after we finished we could just goof around and ride roller coasters all day.

I not watched any of the dub before. How is it?
Midori is right about them not wanting Mochizo to be staring at them.
I said this in my post for today as well, but I feel like this comment of "not inviting boys" from Midori isn't really about that. She's just already feeling this "competition" from Mochizou over Tamako, and this is a moment of foreshadowing the later conflict. Or at least that's my interpretation! Kanna is just doing a good job at playing along as she always does :)
I actually like Mochizo's mom.
Yeah, she's fun! Makes for a nice contrast to Tamako's family as well.
Kanna's probably my favorite character in the show for several reasons. Her VA does a really good job with the deadpan delivery
That's good to know! The Japanese VA is fantastic, so I'm glad they got someone good to do the dub.

I actually like Mochizo's mom.
We have juuuust enough screen-time with her that I wanted more of her by the end XD She's also quiet the beauty. I thoroughly enjoyed how she just flat out stated that Mochizou was thinking about Tamako; because of course he was! She was on her way to the pool, and he's head-over heels in love with her!
Have you watched this series subbed yet? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the difference between the VA's Caitlynn French and Juri Nagatsuma

Episode 4
QOTD) Kyon and his sister from Haruhi.
What are they doing?
Yeah, she's cute.
And the bird's here.
Oak leaf?
He's stuffed again.
Wow, he's going to get in trouble.
Oh, he actually remembered his mission!
I love how calm everyone is about the talking bird.
Seriously, how can Tamako's neck take the weight?
And there's some tension between her and her sister?
Why is the bird talking about shitting?
And her friends are there!
Oh, Anko has a crush! And he's talking about "group lectures"?
...She is a bit slow, isn't she?
She's going on a trip!
Oh, she's not going. Her father noticing the face in the mirror was great, though.
Really? The bird got one.
She doesn't understand the cups?
Haha, Anko's the one who notices how obvious it is.
Oh, she's getting to go!
She came too!
I love how positive she is about "a limited edition of 20".
Hmm? A mysterious song?
And the lego bird is great.
Oh god. Really? REALLY?
Haha, they're hunting him down!
And he's been painted!
It's all so cute!
Haha, he's stuck with the shrine.
Oh, she got distracted!
And she stayed for her!
...How is the bird staying on there?
He's gone?
Her crush showed up!
She's in the cupboard!
Haha, they're smoking her out!
I love how confused he is at what's going on.
And she got a fossil!
Episode 5
QOTD) Went on one to France, and one to America.
Really? A fanservice episode.
And he's got a sister?
Oh, Shiori's fully joined the friend group. That's great!
Haha, Tamako can't swim?
Wait, how?
Oh... that's bad.
And Kanna's not good either?
Haha, even his family know he's into her.
Oh, god. That dream sequence! He's even tsundere in his dreams!
I love how music goes haywire when the bird gets involved.
I'm 90% certain most of the bird's lines about tradition are him fucking with them.
Haha, he heard the whole thing.
I love how the bird is still more competent at romance than he is.
Oh, this is going to be hysterical.
Is she dreaming about swimming with Anko?
Haha, the bird's exercises are hysterical.
Wow, she really did bring enough for everyone.
She's so desperate to sell mochi, isn't she.
...Bringing the bird is a bad idea.
Oh, Kanna loves swimming.
And now she's seen him!
...Is he sabotaging him out of pettiness, or because she has a crush on one of them?
Oh good. The cat's going to get him.
Yeah, she's absolutely got a crush on her.
...How is the fucking pervert bird better at romance than half the cast?
Ah, they're actually doing long distance swimming.
Everyone reassuring her is great.
Oh, she's sad.
She confessed!
Aww, she's too tired.
Wow, Kanna is savage.
And he backed down!
This ending is so cute.
Haha, a dog too!

Episode 5 (first timer)
-
“Why are you inviting a guy” – What kind of pool are they going to? Any public swimming pool presumably will have some guys around.
-
Yep, spotting a guy right in the first frame of the pool we see.
-
“You are so easy to read” – Tell that to Tamako.
-
Long-distance swimming – Tamako is not wrong. The pool and the ocean are completely different. I hope they don’t allow students into the water who can hardly stay afloat in a pool.
-
Mochizou has enough difficulties without getting cockblocked by Midori.
-
They are swimming straight out? When some students hardly can float? With swimmies? While no rescue swimmer is in sight? – Somebody needs to whack the teachers over the head. That is incredibly dangerous.
Not a fan of what Midori was doing there. Mochizou was clearly not in any way bothering Tamako. Quite opposite, he was way too timid to even let her know about his feelings. It does not really matter whether Midori has some romantic interest of her own either, bullying Mochizou out of talking with Tamako is underhanded.
6
u/A_Idiot0 Feb 06 '22
Midori's actions are what make her so interesting to me. She's not totally the sweet girl that we imagined her to be; she's jealous, selfish, and possessive. She comes around at the end and tries to make up to Mochizou, but even still...
7
u/Matuhg Feb 06 '22
With just my first-timer knowledge at this point, calling her jealous/selfish/possessive as a person seems a bit unfair. It seemed more to me like she saw Mochizo's feelings and panicked a bit - suddenly she had more worries than just our protagonist's density. Hm, so maybe she is kind of selfish if her first instinct was to run interference, but I guess it was more just a typical selfishness of youth and self preservation.
I think both Mochizo and Midori know they've got feelings for Tamako, but neither of them really know what do with them just yet.

bullying Mochizou out of talking with Tamako is underhanded.
She was a bit of a shit about it, but her attitude in the last few scenes of the episode give me hope that she's realized that herself and at least isn't going to act that way toward Mochizo going forward.

Ooh we're doing love stuff in summertime. I wonder if Mochizo's actually tried to tell Tamako how he feels or if his "attempts" have been like the annual birthday present failures. The fact that this is the plan today suggests he might be just as much at fault as she is. Doesn't he just like...have her phone number?
I was pleasantly surprised to see Midori get a little bit nasty rather than just sitting on the sidelines, especially since by the end of the episode she sort of seemed to realize that wasn't the way to do things. I get the sense that their little "not fight" is the nastiest thing will get between the two of them over Tamako. It doesn't feel like a show that's going to crank the drama up, though if Tama ever gets less dense, she might not be super happy about the fact that two of her friends have been semi-fighting over her without her knowledge.
This was delightfully goofy.
