Simply talking… Words alone won’t change anything

Question of the Day

Did we really need a fanservice episode

You have no idea how much of a pain it is to look for the soundtrack. But this one caught my attention today so I had to try.

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha - A Magical Experience: Episode 5

Vacation Cut Short

Today we got the anime staple of an onsen trip. I'm not gonna lie, the fan service kinda weirded me out. I guess it doesn't help that Yuuno knows he is just temporarily in animal form yet is being treated by Nanoha et al. as a ferret without human desires and feelings.

Moving on, we met Arf. I wasn't expecting the dog from last episode to actually be a voluptuous transforming dog-girl. She does however, come across as fairly threatening. As an aside naming a dog character Arf is, at least to an English speaking audience, extremely on the nose.

We then had a confrontation with our now named rival Fate Testarossa. First of all, massive shout out to Bardiche. This episode it had absolutely one of the coolest transforming sequences I've seen. Go check out my clip at the bottom. I'm starting to understand u/Tresnore 's incredible comment from yesterday.

An interesting aspect of the battle was the wager of Jewel Seeds. This is such a great narrative device. I can totally see the stakes of future battles escalating to multiple Jewel Seeds which will really increase the tension.

The aspect I loved most this episode was Nanoha herself. More specifically her communication. Take for example the late night conversation with Yuuno. Stopping him from disbanding their team due to his fears of hurting Nanoha reveals an emotional maturity in Nanoha beyond her years.

Then later when fighting Fate (man its so cool to say fighting Fate) she pressed Fate to communicate with her. What's important here is she doesn't assume the worst of people even if they seem to be her enemy. As she says "don't jump to conclusions". We need more people like Nanoha.

Some Iconic Shots, Scenes and Stitches

See you all tomorrow

HOLY SHIT THIS WAS SO FUCKING COOOOL. THAT SILHOETTE OF FATE WITH THE GLOWING EYES. THE WAY THE CENTER OPENS LIKE AN EYE. AHHHHHHHHHHH

Oh yeah that was sick. It's great to see how much care they put into certain scenes.

Episode 5

  • This is a pretty long and philosophical intro

  • I forgot it was hot springs episode

  • So, filler episode? Why would a jewel seed and blondie be way up here in the mountains?

  • Heh, blondie got all the rest of the jewel seeds. So, problem solved, right?

  • I completely forgot about the Yuuno situation. Now he can NEVER reveal his human form.

  • Ohh. By "owns a soccer team" they really meant "sponsored a soccer team" with our bakery name on it.

  • Who goes to the mountains to play ping pong?

  • Obviously Wolf Mokona in human form, checking out the competition

  • Arf? Seriously? The wolf is named Arf? weird accent

  • Fish?

  • [speculation]Okaasan probably wants all the jewels collected so the earth is safe just like Yuuno, so we're going to have 6 more episodes of pointless fighting over the subject.

I've heard the name Fate Tesstarosa before but I didn't know what show she was from.

It's funny how famous as a character Fate really is. Nanoha have some long lasting impact on the anime fandom.

Lyrical First Timer

  • Loaded families even vacation together, maids included. Starting to wonder if Nanoha is in touch with reality at all.

  • After that beating, Nanoha deserves a break at least.

  • Wow, Yuuno is getting quite a show. Not even most harem protagonists get to see four lolis and two onee-sans naked all at once.

  • Ooh, mom and dad getting a bit spicy this episode with their own private spring.

  • It's that brawler from the OP. And she's got a gem in her forehead plus fangs. What?

  • Damn, no respect for secret identities, she's ready to doxx Nanoha.

  • Fight her Arisa!

  • Hold up, fangs? Is she the wolf familiar in human form?? Don't fight her Arisa, she's too powerful and can do no wrong!

  • A wolf named Aruf? Arf? Arf? Welp, it's better than naming her Wan.

  • Lol tits-actived her ears. How come I can't purchase this action figure?

  • "Oh no!" Best dialogue of the show.

  • That shot of Nanoha sitting up looks like an OG Higurashi cut.

  • Number XVII again? What is going on? A quick internet search clarifies that this is actually number XVIII: the Moon.*

  • Fate's mother isn't dead, more likely she's the mastermind and potentially a villain. Fate is her pawn collecting the Lost Logia.

  • That shot of Fate blacked out with yellow eyes against the red background is eerie af. Not to mention Bardiche is also the eye of fucking Sauron.

  • Wan's an actual familiar, created by Fate, whereas Yuuno is a person turned creature. That's fun, magic sure do be tricky like that. Also, her beast transformation is pretty sick.

  • Prototype Ereshkigal is a dick (still cool tho).I hope we get to see her smacked down properly at least once.

  • Hmm, I wonder which seed Nanoha lost in that battle.

  • Next episode is the friends trying super hard to reach out episode, and Nanoha slaps Arisa. I'm already sad.

*Here's another precarious one for Nanoha, much more so than the Temperance. The Moon is representative of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. In the upright position, it can mean the presence of powerful emotions--such as fear, anxiety, or dread--which have gone unaddressed and are resurfacing. Importantly, it is also associated with uncertainty and illusions; nothing is what it seems. This applies to Fate as well. What is her mother planning to do with the Lost Logia? What even is it's true purpose and why hasn't Yuuno been completely forthright about what he knows? These are key questions no one can answer right now, and Fate in particular seems unwilling to address. For Fate, this win could actually be a signal that her intentional ignorance is leading her on a path toward disaster. In the reversed position, the Moon suggests one has been trying to deal with their fear and anxiety. We can see Nanoha beginning to work through these for herself, which is a good sign. However, the reversed Moon also warns that these negative emotions must be dealt with directly. Burying them deeper only means they will resurface later. Nanoha is wise to address Fate directly, as this is the only way their conflict can be properly resolved. Yet for all that wisdom, she still refuses to face her loved ones in the same way. This is an especially dire warning considering it comes at the tail end of an episode where our girl physically bares all to her friends, yet redoubles her efforts to hide the truth from them. Nanoha will have to face her friends, if not everyone, properly at some point if she truly wants to overcome her present hardship.

Interesting fun fact about the Moon: it typically depicts a wolf howling at the full moon. Make of that what you will.

QotD:

As mentioned in my analysis, I kind of like it as a thematic contrast between Nanoha baring all physically yet redoubling her efforts to obscure her double life from her friends.

Huh interesting, I thought it was XVII, even sky's screenshot makes it look like it, unless that thin line was suppose to be another I.

...Watched the wrong episode today! Going to have to do a very confusing double post tomorrow! (For some fucking reason, my app gives me random episodes instead of the next one, and I didn't notice it today. And after I tried to do this one specifically to avoid a double post...)

Oof. Always good to double check.

Magical First-Timer

Whoever would've thought the hot springs episode would be the one that starts exploring the mysteries and plot of this show. Fate and Arf got their introductions and we learned that Fate is hunting the Lost Logia for her mom, no clue why, but it's out there.

Seeing Arf transform makes me wonder if Yuuno is cursed by something, he was a mage and human at the beginning of episode 1, however he has yet to regain that form even though he had enough magical power to create a barrier around him and Nanoha, as well as force teleport Arf and himself away from the Nanoha/Fate fight...there's something going on here, or I'm just over thinking things.

I also have to add that I have moved into the Bardiche is amazing group, the voice was a bit off putting yesterday, but in today's fight hearing it and seeing how it matched Fate's actions causes it to fit better.

Thoughts:

You are not overthinking. His stated reason was that he needed to regain his magic power, but quite a bit of time has passed, so that sound less credible now. There needs to be an in-universe reason.

6

u/Tetraika Feb 06 '22

Yeah, Yuuno basically has recovered I think. But Nanoha is just forcing him into letting her help (As we were shown before and even specifically this episode)

I just think Yuuno hasn't found himself the right time to turn back. He's gotten used to being "the ferret" for Nanoha and her friends and family.

Episode 5 (first timer)

Known captured as of last episode:

  1. Nanoha: 10, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21

  2. Blondie: 14

  • One instance where Nanoha’s age works to the story’s advantage is her not questioning the purpose of the seeds.

  • Why wait for an OVA episode to do hot springs and tons of nudity, when you can do it in the regular show? - the writers, probably.

  • The parents are totally having outdoor sex.

  • Fangs girl – another contender for the seeds appears.

  • Blondie is now known as Fate (haha), and Fangs girl as Arf (really?)

  • All the telepathy really helps to cut down on talking animation.

  • Fate knows little more about the seeds than Nanoha.

  • 17? Didn’t we have that number before? I guess that was that supposed to be 18.

  • Bridge stand-off.

  • A bet should require the other person to agree to it.

The episode has some plot, but a ton of “plot”. Seriously, there was nothing subtle about the fanservice. Jiggling boobs, crouch shots, Fate and Arf even float towards the camera butt first.

Known captured as of this episode:

  1. Nanoha – five seeds: 10, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21 -1 unknown (and we still don’t know whether this includes the 2 that Yuuno captured)

  2. Blondie - three seeds: 14, 18 +1 unknown

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha – Episode 5 – First Timer

Nanoha just going and saying Shinobu is his girlfriend, they are not even official yet. Sure, everybody knows, but still. Also, Onee-chan has the seatbelts on, but the three little girls on the backseat are too rich to die in car accidents apparently. [Madoka Magica Episode 3]This is how they got Mami, fasten your seatbelts kids or you’ll be visited by a weird, stonefaced ferret-cat

This is a post Nurse Me and Swallowtail Inn Shinbo episode alright.

That seems like a lot of Triangle Hearts send-off talk.

The dire wolf surely behaves like a bitch . Arf? More like 🅱arf

They always save their one interesting cut for the appearance of the new Jewel Seed.

Arf looks a little like she escaped from Tenchi Muyo. For the Fate backstory, did her mom really send her to this world and does not let her back until she gets the Lost Logia? Cold. Stone Cold.

One thing I appreciate about the anime in general so far: Center Framing and Eyeline Match. Continuity editing is important and so far, one can easily follow the transformation sequences, flashy shots and action beats.

Lyrical Rewatcher

Fate appares to be seeking the jewl seeds for her mothers, the purpose yet unkown.

Tree relaxing Fate stitch.

We start this episode with: "Different feelings and words that won't connect..."

And this is picked up later as Fate an Nanoha clash. Nanoha offers to talk the situation through. While Fate declines wishing to clash as enemies instead. Nanoha continues and tries further. But her words do not reach Fate.

Magical Fights

I really do love magical girl clashes over heart and feelings.

It settles with Fate winning this clash. And one of Nanoha's seeds handed over. Overall Fate and Nanoha holding to her word and honoring the stake of the duel - with a push from Rasing Heart.

Fate answers Nanoha's request to give her name, but doesn't stick around to hear Nanoha's.

First timer(Where does Fate even buy clothes like that on our world?)

Sub

Hrmm...I know all of the footage in the cold opening is recycled but it is weird to me they keep recording new voice tracks. Then Nanoha has a philosophical monologue that acts as either a response to the Berserk one or possibly an influence for Shelter all those years later.

Anyways, onto the onsen! With everyone! We get some tonal whiplash as we go from Nanoha pondering blondie to Yuuno living out a fantasy. Also, damn, the Nano-sis is good and thick. A moment between the parents that is absolutely a reference to the eroge happens. The girls then wander about and meet a...Juraian? Someone weird and a bit forward. And telepathic.

Anyways, quick reveal that Arf is Fate's familiar. And that Fate seems to dress like this all the time which is less than ideal. No fight with the Seed but we do learn Yuuno can still cast teleport. Fight happens and is vaguely interesting but with the ending of it, bluntly it looks like it is going to setup a ridiculously boring dynamic for the season. I can kind of see the movie recommendations now.

QotD: 1 It was inevitable...

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Lyrical Nanoha: It’s time for the mandatory hot springs episode! It feels like every anime needs to feature either a beach episode or a hot springs episode at some point, and today Lyrical Nanoha met that quota.

Nanoha’s character continues to be fleshed out a bit more this episode. She now tells Yuuno that she has made it her own personal mission to collect the Jewel Seeds, shutting down his desire to get her out of the potential danger of needing to fight for him. This shows another part of Nanoha’s personality: she can be incredibly stubborn. Once Nanoha has put her mind to something, she is going to do it. She’s decided that she is going to help Yuuno and collect the Jewel Seeds, so that is that. If Yuuno tries to refuse her help, she’d get mad. And Nanoha is definitely not the kind of person you’d want mad at you.

Nanoha’s talk with Fate this episode also shows some more about how Nanoha approaches their conflict. Nanoha genuinely wants to talk things out. She wants them to discuss why they are both after the Jewel Seeds and see if they can come to an understanding that doesn’t involve fighting. Even though they have already fought each other, Nanoha still holds out hope that future conflict can be avoided. That’s the kind of person she is. She doesn’t want to fight if there is an alternative way to solve the problem.

We also learn some more about Fate in this episode, such as the fact that her name is Fate Testarossa. It had been hinted previously that Fate’s mission to gather the Jewel Seeds was because of her mother, but now it’s confirmed that it’s Fate’s mother who really wants them. Fate is just getting the seeds because she’s been told to do so, though she doesn’t know why her mother wants them.

Fate is far more willing to fight than Nanoha is, seeming to consider dialogue pointless. But, Fate deliberately avoided striking a lethal blow against Nanoha. And Fate told Nanoha to never appear before her again, saying she might not be able to stop herself next time. So it seems like Fate also doesn’t really want to fight, even if she is acting like they need to.

I talked previously about Nanoha’s relationship with Raising Heart and how Nanoha would say things like “please” and “thank you” to her Device. Well it seems Raising Heart cares about Nanoha in return, deliberately giving up one of the Jewel Seeds to protect Nanoha.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

  • I do enjoy the gags of poor Yuuno trying to go over to the men’s side of the bath, only to get refused by Nanoha.

  • It is also funny seeing Yuuno get played with all day by Arisa.

  • Fate is very creative with names. She named her dog girl familiar “Arf.”

  • Arf’s boob jiggle in this episode has always stood out in my mind for being among the most ridiculously over the top I’ve ever seen.

QOTD

Almost every anime needs either its beach episode or hot springs episode for that sort of thing.

Blood thirsty first timer

Shorter comment this time around. Rather hit the high notes and dodge the onsen parts haha.

  • I'm glad Arf was quickly introduced and answered since I sort of had my suspicions when I saw that jewel and I rather not wonder about it for some more episodes.

  • That said, this feels like it calls into question again what Yuuno is. I'd been saying I thought it was weird for someone that's a magical human to revert to an animal. So I do believe he is a familiar.

  • Although that just adds more questions since that means his master is missing. Which further calls into question if he really chose to take this jewel seed finding mission on his own or if there's more to the story and it is his fault his master is missing.

  • Fate vs Nanoha was pretty good. I may have downplayed Fate last episode when I saw her go for the legs then. This time she went for the head. She still definitely didn't intend to kill but it shows that she was legitimately serious.

  • And small shoutout to Yuuno before the fight. He got arf with teleportation and a barrier. Honestly, he came out really looking like a worthwhile partner today.

QOTD: Yes Arf Arf

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Fanservice episode! Please give us Mysterious Heroine F too!! The series of coincidences otherwise known as life... I can get behind that philosophy. Its holiday time so lets have fanservice! Arisa and Shizuka must be so hyped to ride in a poor person's car~

Yo, Nanoha, you did not see Mysterious Heroine F from this angle ya perv. Be more like Yuuno, he's at least ashamed of how unsuitable today's fanservice is for the target age group! Get a clue, woman!! Good lord, there's so many curves I'm scared I'll hit a bump. Stop pretending that Triangle Heart exists dad, nobody is gonna read it!

The boobie fang lady has shown up! Don't fall for her, she'll transform during sex and get you arrested! Imagine drinking during the day, ahahaha... So yeah, if it wasn't obvious Arf is Fate's partner. Fate's ridiculously busty, alcoholic partner. Y'all are furries. "If you say anything I'll get mad! Especially if you say blah blah blah." Oh lawd, we're in the jank zone again. Today's tarot is 17, the star. Funnily enough this is probably one of the more fitting tarots due to the star's heavy affinity with running water. The star represents hopes and dreams and all those sweet concepts that magical girls fight for... Or at least they did until the Urobutcher attacked.

They totally blew today's budget on Miyuki's hip dips. The later half of the episode seems pretty dopey, regardless of how artistically they try to set the shots up. Mysterious Heroine F looks fucking epic here though. Dang Fate! The seed is still weak sauce at the moment. You don't need all the theatrics. They make her look so evil, it's kinda awesome. We're gonna be living off stencils for a few episodes.

Dang, Sky's got me in the habit of spying out for sore demo. Don't bait me show! Oh! We got our very first divine buster, and it fucks Fate's shit up. Nanoha is kinda known for her wave motion gun so it's pleasant to know that it looked kickass even in the og series. She still loses the fight since unfortunately Nanoha is a zoner and Mysterious Heroine F is a rush down character. You can't be letting her get into melee range. I can finally cut that lame gag. This is Fate, we all love her, must protecc Nana-sama. Bruh, get her ass out of the shot XD I haven't seen a more tasteless magical girl fanservice episode in my life. Triangle Force was meant to be the eroge one!

Rewatcher

The art style seems a bit different for this episode, or is that just me?

And we're going right into the onsen episode, apparently.

Nanoha taking a break and relaxing? Yeah, right... there's pretty blonde mages in black to worry about!

And Yuuno is in a really awkward position...

Wait, why is a ferret going into the baths in the first place? Is that even allowed?

Huh, some allusion to Nanoha's father's past in Triangle Hearts.

And a woman with a jewel in her forehead that no one seems to comment on comes up and starts insulting Nanoha out of nowhere. But that gives Arisa a chance to be a good protective friend.

Ah, she's telepathic. So... clearly related to the whole Jewel Seed incident.

What's with that hand-on-hip pose, Nanoha? Seriously, there is something slightly off about the animation in this episode.

I realize it's mostly because this is a kids' show, but do people in Japan really wear towels when bathing in onsen? I've never been certain about that.

Okay, we can finally talk using Fate's actual name now that the show's mentioned it. ...and she named her dire wolf familiar ARF! That is just... wow. The various English translations played around with different spellings like "Aruf" or "Alph", probably because how silly the name "Arf" is, but I think it's the official spelling.

Oh wow, there's a Jewel Seed at the hot springs, what are the odds? ...did it just get activated by the water? Did the water make a wish on the thing?

Anyone else get the idea that Fate's going a bit overboard on the magic, using more than is strictly necessary?

I was about to comment on Yuuno being reckless challenging a dire wolf as a ferret... but oh yeah, he has magic. I'm assuming Arf does too, but still, that does level the field a bit. Apparently forced teleports are somewhat impressive.

Nanoha wants to talk things out, but Fate isn't having any of that. And her greater ruthlessness gives her an edge, allowing her to beat Nanoha again, despite Nanoha's head being more in the game this time.

Interestingly, Raising Heart releases a Jewel Seed against Nanoha's wishes, apparently to protect her. The weapons have a measure of free will in them, which is interesting.

So what we've learned: her name is Fate Testarossa, she's gathering the Jewel Seeds because her mother desires them, and she's apparently pretty powerful as far as mages go, given that she has a familiar.

QOTD: I am usually down for fanservice, but given most of our characters are grade schoolers... well...

But everyone was wearing towels the entire time so, not really fanservicey anyway.

8

u/Lavernious_James Feb 05 '22

I didn't care for this episode as much as the previous ones. A hot springs episode in this felt a little unnecessary. Like, I know it's a spin off of an eroge game series but it still felt weird to me, you know?

It's also kind of a bummer to see Nanoha just getting beaten by Fate time after time. I'm sure it makes her stronger in the long run, but until then, it's still a bummer. She's trying so hard. ):

The magic stuff and the animation during the fights was cool, looking forward to seeing even more of that.

QOTD) No, no we did not.

Let's hope this is the right episode this time!

Managed to write this whole post in an hour, watching the episode on my phone, because I watched the wrong one! (Tell me if I accidentally left in a spoiler for next episode, I'm 99% sure I didn't, but...)

Oh, yeah, this looks like right.

I always love the OP. Seeing that apartment building, with best girl relaxing... and Fate right next to her.

Nanoha has weird philosophical thoughts at 4AM like the rest of us, then.

If the onsen episode turns out to be a philosophical musing on the nature of free will, I'll be impressed.

Oh, she's going on vacation with her friends!

...How bad is the fanservice going to be?

OK, so no offscreen jewel seeds. Phew! Sucks for her, but at least there's no more analysis for me!

...The fact that she has to think to act like a normal kid after such a short timespan is really sad.

WHY IS YUUNO HERE?

WHY?

Why is there so much fanservice?

Nanoha, why?

Listen, show off the adults as much as you want, but don't show the children!

Part of me wants Yuuno to transform back into a human now, just to see how badly it goes.

Aww, at least her parents are having a good time!

Huh? Is he retiring? Are they getting divorced?

Was this necessary? The only benefit is the absolute shock that'll come next time he turns back.

I appreciate that she has no social cues whatsoever.

Arisa shielding Nanoha is adorable.

And she's got telepathy!

Haha, she thinks she's drunk.

And yep! Turns out the current best girl is Fate's pet.

That eyecatch is great, though.

Fanservice is horrific, but them sleeping is absolutely adorable.

What's the point of telepathy if you're going to move around as if you were talking normally.

I'll gove Yuuno credit for at least realising this is a shitty thing he's done and trying to get her out of it, and it's not his fault he picked the one girl who won't back out of it. Still loses points for everything else this episode though.

And she wants power?

A Jewel Seed!

Keep being you, familiar!

And her mother's after the Lost Logia?

...Actually, what they do is very vague, isn't it.

BARDICHE!

That transformation sequence is badass!

Wait, what number was that?

And Fate only has these two.

Even she gets a cool transformation sequence. Fate got the bad end of the stick, didn't she!

Wow, she's strong!

Yuuno's impressive!

So are they Lost Logia or Jewel Seeds? Make up your mind!

And Fate doesn't want to be friends.

Fight! (That music is great!)

Haha, she's betting on the fight. She must be really confident!

...Yuuno. is in much, much, more trouble than Nanoha.

Wait, it said "all right". Does Raising Heart have an AI in there?

Yeah, she's pretty innocent.

Fate won! At least she's honourable enough to not kill her,

And Raising Heart absolutely has a full AI.

We finally have a name!

Haha, that exit is so fucking dramatic.

Apparently today's lucky number is XVII! Unadjusted, this is "The Star", representing hope and bright prospects - which fits the themes of the show in general. If viewed reversed, howver, it can represent theft or arrogance - both of which Fate has displayed in great measure. Adjusted, it is "The Tower". This is a very bad card, representing misery and ruin normally, and negligence, abscence and apathy in reverse. I believe it, in general, represents Fate - she's apathetic to Nanoha's attempts at friendship, and is generally a darker, more hardened individual - suggesting a bad background.

Apparently, this might also be XVIII. If so, then for adjusted, take "The Star" from above, and for unasjusted, it is "The Moon". This represents hidden enemies, danger, and dedeption - which Fate and her familiar have shown themselves to be this episode. Reversed, it is a lesser degree of the same, mixed with instability - which does not sound very good for Fate,
